LAMMA 2022 CONFIRMS NEW SHOW DATES

The Lamma show announced today that it will move its dates from 11th12th Jan to 4th-5th May 2022.

he LAMMA Show announced today that it will move its dates from 11th-12th January to 4th-5th May 2022 in response to the evolving COVID-19 situation due to the Omicron variant.

All plans for the 40th anniversary edition will be carried over to the spring edition, when the LAMMA show will welcome over 600 exhibitors and 40,000 attendees face-to-face, who will gather to connect over the latest machinery, technology and equipment for the farming industry.

SUPPORTING EWE NUTRITION PRE & POST LAMBING LEAD TO HEAVIER LAMBS A combination supplement protocol pre and post lambing allows ewe to rear lambs with a 4.2kg advantage at weaning.

S

heep producers looking to maximise weaning weights and lifetime performance for this season’s lamb crop should adopt a combo supplement protocol for colostrum quality pre lambing and milk production post lambing says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco.

During this time, the udder also develops and the feeding regime influences colostrum quality.

According to Dr Bond, feeding Lifeline Lamb and Ewe in that critical six week window pre lambing not only ensures protein and energy demands are being met for foetal development, but also boosts colostrum quality.

In a farm trial overseen by SRUC, lambs born from ewes supplemented with Lifeline Lamb and Ewe six weeks before lambing and then transitioned to Rumevite Graze DUP for four weeks post lambing grew 50g per day faster from birth than controls, with a 4.2kg advantage at weaning. Taking in account supplement costs, this yields a return on investment of £14.28 in a set of twins.

“Feeding a well-balanced, energy and quality protein bucket including minerals, vitamins and trace elements during this rapid period of foetal development can significantly increase immunoglobulin levels in the colostrum,” says Dr Bond.

The significant increase in lamb performance is due to critical areas in ewe nutrition being met with strategic supplementation during periods of high nutrient demand.

“In the last six weeks of pregnancy, over 70 percent of foetal growth occurs. For context, a lamb weighing 4.5kg at birth only weighs 800g in the 8 weeks prior to being born. It has a huge amount of growth and development to do in a very short space of time to get to a lamb ready for birth,” explains Dr Bond. “This puts a lot of stress on the ewe and pulls large amounts of nutrients from her diet and therefore increases her requirements for energy and protein – doubling for those carrying twins.”

Immunoglobulin content is an important measure of colostrum quality that infers passive immunity to disease in young lambs. In independent trial work

by SAC, feeding innovatively balanced energy plus protein lick including minerals, vitamins and trace elements pre lambing was found to increase colostrum immunoglobulin content by 25% more than a standard energy bucket.

“Healthier lambs have increased feed intake and growth rate, show improved early vigour and general health, thrive and are potentially less likely to suffer from conditions such as coccidiosis, hypothermia and mis-mothering,” explains Dr Bond.

Lactation post lambing yields ROI To optimise lamb performance, feeding to support foetal development and colostrum

production is only half the battle, says Dr Bond, with the first six weeks of lamb growth post lambing being 100 percent dependent on milk production.

“Seventy-five percent of a ewe’s milk production takes place in the eight weeks post lambing, with peak milk production taking place in weeks three and four,” says Dr Bond.

During this period, a typical ewe will produce 1.5-3.0 litres per day, with similar production equivalent being to a high yielding dairy cow. In a SRUC farm trial, the added milk production achieved from feeding Rumevite Graze DUP, a supplement high in quality by-pass protein and energy with rumen protected amino acids, resulted in lamb weaning weight advantages of 2.29kg per lamb.

Taking into account the cost of feeding the supplement for four weeks at a daily intake of 101g per ewe and a liveweight price of £1.70 per kg, the return on investment of the extra lamb gain in a set of twins was £5.33 when feeding Rumevite Graze DUP alone. When including cost of Lifeline Lamb and Ewe and added performance output, the return on investment for a set of twins is £14.28.

Supporting lamb lifetime performance Aside from yielding heavier lambs and greater financial returns, meeting flock nutrient requirements pre and post lambing supports the lifetime performance of the flock and the farming business.

The New Holland Baler Automation System is designed to maximise baling productivity and operator comfort based on swath volume, slice thickness, machine load and tractor engine load. It guides the tractor over the swath automatically: a reliable Lidar (light detection and ranging) sensor with IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) detects the position and cross section of the swath, and the system automatically adapts the forward speed accordingly.

The tractor’s GPS system further improves the guidance accuracy.

The automatic guidance of the baler ensures equal bale chamber filling, always using the maximum capacity available without exceeding the limit. The result is increased productivity with more bales per day and greater durability for the baler. By maximising the throughput of the baler, the Baler Automation System also reduces the tractor’s fuel consumption, resulting in a lower production cost per

bale.

An advanced feature enables the operator to set the desired bale weight and the system will predict the weight of the bales on the go, constantly adjusting according to an algorithm. The result is consistent bale weight, perfect bale shape and high quality even in changing crop and yield conditions – all without the operator’s intervention.

New Holland Agriculture also won the Silver Medal for Innovation for its new combine residue automation system, featuring the use of 2D radars and a patented closed loop algorithm.

In the Operations Center the farmer can plan the upcoming spraying applications in advance, by taking relevant setup data, including application products and tank mix information, and assigning to specific fields. To add high quality VRA maps to the planned work, the state-of-theart interfaces allow customers to seamlessly connect their Operations Center account with xarvio® FIELD MANAGER. The John Deere Gen4-Display in the cab receives the maps and supports the farmer in the display setup process.

It provides the John Deere ISOBUS sprayer with the fieldspecific application rate based on its current position in the field. John Deere sprayers then make the difference thanks to ExactApply, the best rate control accuracy in the industry.

While spraying, the Gen4Display creates

high-resolution as-applied maps and sends them back to the Operations Centre for further agronomic analysis and compliance reporting.

When a collar issues a pulse it immediately sends a popup notification to the farmer via the Nofence app with the location of the animal. If the animal continues to move in the wrong direction, it will only receive a maximum of three pulses before it is classed as escaped. Again, the farmer is notified, and the location of the animal is tracked. When the animal crosses back through the boundary to return

to the herd, it does not receive a pulse, with animals typically going back on their own in the rare case of an escape.

According to Synne Foss Budal, General Manager for Nofence UK, the technological game-changer has proven successful in shifting cattle and sheep grazing behaviour to rely on their sense of hearing rather than sight.

Data collected by Nofence through observations of herd behaviour on more than 30,000 head of livestock logging more than 129 million grazing hours has found the typical farm to have one pulse per every 30 audio cues.

“Nofence grazing technology has already opened up a lot of opportunities for UK livestock producers, especially those wanting to better manage upland grazing where the lack of physical fencing has previously been challenging,” says Miss Budal. “Features within the Nofence app, such as being able to track an individual animal’s location and change virtual fencing parameters within a matter of seconds is also hugely beneficial to both upland and lowland systems.”

he DLG Innovation Commission (German Agricultural Society) has announced the winners of the Agritechnica 2022 Innovation Awards. AMAZONE was awarded a silver medal for its new DirectInject. DirectInject enables the fast, flexible and needs-based metered addition of a pesticide during application.

The demands on farmers with regard to plant protection go hand in hand with the constantly increasing technology. Flexibility in the selection of plant protection agents in the field becomes increasingly important.

From a plant establishment perspective, the needs-based application of specific products and active ingredients only in part sections, or individual fields, is a frequent response.

There are also restrictions relating to environmentallysensitive fields and bodies of water which the farmer must consider when selecting plant protection agents. These requirements with respect to flexibility in plant protection are in stark contrast to the structural development towards larger sprayers for higher work rates and more economic use.

System overview The DirectInject system has enabled AMAZONE to offer a system of direct injection of

plant protection agents which solves, for the first time, the conflicting goals described above. The injection of plant protection agents can be started or stopped during application as required. The special feature of DirectInject compared to conventional systems is the fast response time of the injection process and its complete integration into the spray liquid circuit and operation of the sprayer.

With DirectInject, it is possible to respond individually to the needs of the crop in the field, reducing the usage of plant protection agents as well as the number of additional passes with the sprayer. This saves time, money and protects the environment.

DirectInject consists of an additional 50 l tank with its own metering system, which is integrated into the storage compartment of the UX 01 Super on the righthand side of the machine.

This means that the tank is also easily accessible from the ground and can be filled safely. The integration of these components into the storage compartment also provides optimum protection for all the equipment.

The major advantage of the technology is that DirectInject can work with undiluted plant protection agents. A mechanical agitator ensures that even plant protection

agents which tend to separate remain homogeneous.

Application in the field If the sprayer operator notices, for instance, a prevalence of unwanted weeds that need to be controlled in a specific part-area, they can activate the DirectInject system from the cab at the touch of a button.

The supplementary product from the DirectInject tank is then added to the spray agent from the spray agent tank.

The optimised reaction time compared to conventional systems is achieved by a twinline system. Pre-mixed spray agent from the spray agent tank and the plant protection agent from the DirectInject tank are held in different feed pipes on the boom. When the direct feed system is activated, the mixture is applied through the nozzle bodies and nozzles via several injection points in the boom.

These short routes for the spray agent to get directly to the boom result in short reaction times in the field. The DUS pro high-pressure recirculation system enables the spray agent in the spray line to circulate with the pre-set spray pressure at all times, even when the nozzles are closed. Circulation is stopped when the direct feed system is activated, meaning that the spray agent from the spray agent tank is not mixed with the product from the DirectInject tank.

Following a collaboration with the specialist Italian manufacturer Dinamica Generale, KUHN now offers highly intuitive programmable weighing as standard on all machines.

In addition, the company offers the option of either a secondary display or a remote-control facility, available through pre-loaded ‘apps’ on a smartphone or tablet. For full ration tracking and management, KUHN also now offers a cloud-based data transfer function that provides a comprehensive package of monitoring and reporting options, controlled from a personal computer and with the potential to interface with other farm management software.

recision technologies offer huge potential to help establish and manage vine and fruit crops. In a series of demonstrations, tractor specialist Landini has been working with technology firms to bring growers up to date on what’s possible.

opcon’s entry-level XD and XD+ touchscreen consoles are now fully ISOBUS accredited having been awarded official AEF (Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation) certification.

The Topcon XD (7”) and XD+ (12.1”) consoles were added to Topcon’s X-series range of precision farming implement control consoles in November last year and have recently been awarded full ISOBUS accreditation by the AEF. As such, in addition to being compatible with the full range of Topcon precision farming systems (auto-steer and implement guidance, automatic headland turns, crop sensing, yield monitoring, variable rate and auto section control and Norac boom height control), the consoles have also passed the AEF’s tests for the following ISOBUS functionalities:

TC Bas 1.0: the implement provides basic totals values that are relevant for the work performed. This information is then used as the basis of the exchange of data between the farm management system and Task Controller in ISOXML data. Jobs can easily be imported to the task controller and/or the finished documentation can be exported later; TC Geo 1.0: allows the user to carry out map-based tasks including variable rate applications. It also records ‘as applied’ and position information for enhanced traceability. This data can then be exported in the universally recognized ISO-XML data format;

UT 2.0: enables different implements to be operated from the same terminal (the UT 2.0 AEF test covers the Virtual Terminal (VT) 3.0 standard);

TC SC 1.0 (task controller section control): automatic switching of sections based on GPS position and desired degree of overlap. This allows the user to optimise product use and ensure application only occurs where required.

AUX-N 1.0: enables users to control certain implement functions which support the AUX-N standard by means of an additional control element such as an externally mounted joystick. The use of AUX-N compatible equipment allows the operator to simplify tasks such as switching the machine on or off or unfolding the implement;

eeping your sprayer in top condition

Safeguarding the environment is so important and there are a range of ways available that sprayer operators can and do use to help avoid unnecessary incidents. With best practice guidelines from NRoSO, along with their annual training events, is a great place to start but lets focus on the annual NSTS test.

A recent presentation by NSTS highlighted to operators and managers the most common faults on sprayers and how quick and easy they are to repair. Many of these common faults relate to leaks and drips, which in time are going to get gradually worse and potentially

pose a risk to the environment.

The Operator check sheet, available on the NSTS website, is there to use all year round but also a good guide when preparing the sprayer for test.

One important test the operator can do is run the machine above normal working pressure, say 5 bar, and walk around the sprayer to check for leaks. It is worth doing this both spraying and not spraying (but leaving the pump running) which may show a fault that can be repaired now, rather than it occurring later when you are busy spraying.

Another aspect of the check sheet is somewhere to record a calibration. It is part of crop assurance to carry this out

at least once a year and is of course best practice to check on a regular basis anyway. The NSTS test itself checks forward speed, nozzle spacing and flow rate to give you all the information to work with when carrying out a calibration.

Check sheets are also available for micro-granular applicators and knapsack sprayers, both of which are required to be inspected regularly, but regular inspections of all pesticide application equipment not only aids protecting the environment but should also help towards ensuring availability of plant protection products for the future.

PROGRESS ON MILK CONTRACTS AND MILK PRICES ‘NEEDED IN 2022’

Progress on both price and contracts are essential if dairy farmer numbers are to stabilise, industry groups say

T

he dairy supply chain must deliver positive price messages in 2022 that fully reflect tightening supplies and soaring costs, NFU Scotland has said.

Next year will also see NFU Scotland press Defra and work with other UK farming unions to make the statutory Milk Purchasing Code and new dairy contracts a reality.

Progress on both price and contracts are essential if dairy farmer numbers are to stabilise, industry groups say.

AHDB released their October 2021 producer figures based on the number of levy-paying farmers and only 8,000 herds remain in Britain with 310 dairy farmers having quit in the past 12 months.

This is against the backdrop that Scotland now has only 836 herds, and this figure may reduce further when the Scottish Dairy Cattle Association release their endof-year figures soon.

The recent dairy report from Kite Consultancy named “Project Reset’ stressed that input cost price rises in the dairy industry are rampant from primary farm level through to dairy processors.

NFU Scotland said it was "unreasonable to expect that these costs should be

sucked up by processors and farmers".

The union's vice president Andrew Connon said: "Feed, fertiliser, fuel, and labour costs are escalating at an alarming rate of knots.

“While we welcome the fact that milk prices have increased across the board in the last few weeks of 2021, the reality is that on farm costs have matched and, in some cases, outstripped these increases.

“We have consistently stated that the supply chain from consumer to cow must change. A fair on-shelf price for milk will deliver for all including the retailer, processor, and primary producer.

“Tightening supplies also support the drive for milk prices to be closer to 40p per litre than 30p. AHDB report that GB milk deliveries are now running 3.6% below the same week last year – equivalent to 1.21 million litres.

"With spot milk currently trading at above 45p per litre, the signals are clearly there for all to see."

This is not a situation unique to GB. Dairy markets in the EU-27 have seen strong price increases in recent months, as limited growth in milk supplies has constrained production of

most dairy products.

On statutory milk contracts, the UK government and devolved administrations have published their response to last year’s consultation seeking views from dairy farmers and processors about how contracts and relationships could be improved.

Defra are now working towards a UK Milk Purchasing Code, which will be made by regulation using the powers under section 29 of the Agriculture Act 2020.

Commenting on NFU Scotland’s commitment to driving this forward, Mr Connon said: “Our milk committee subgroup for contracts continues to spend a huge amount of time on this, working in conjunction with stakeholders including Defra and Scottish Government.

"Our collaboration with the other farming Unions ensures we keep moving forward with the ambition to get this to a favourable position for all.

“The introduction of wellconsidered, appropriate legislation regarding dairy contracts between dairy farmers and milk buyers is essential."

LOSS OF EU SALES CAUSE UK FOOD EXPORTS TO FALL BY £2.7BN

K food exports to the EU, including beef (-18.4%), cheese (-13.2%) and pork (-5.7%), have continued to decline

Exports of UK food have continued to see a significant and persistent drop, new figures show, largely due to new barriers of trade with the EU and the pandemic.

More positive news can be seen in non-EU markets, with exports up 11%, driven by a return to strong growth in China (+22.1%), Taiwan (+21.8%), the UAE (+18.3%), Japan (+10.6%) and Singapore (+5.4%).

Exports of food and drink are down £2.7bn (-15.9%) in the first three quarters of 2021 compared to pre-pandemic levels, Food and Drink Federation (FDF) figures show.

This substantial drop is largely due to a decline in sales to the European Union, accounting for a £2.4 billion (-23.7%) loss.

Exports to core markets including Germany (-44.5%), Italy (-43.3%) and Spain (-50.6%) have been particularly badly hit since 2019.

Elsewhere, UK exports to Ireland – the food sector's biggest overseas market – are down more than a quarter since 2019, a loss of nearly £0.75bn in sales.

This was a fall of more than £2.5bn. Imports from the Netherlands (-19%), Ireland (-20.1%) and Germany (-33.1%) were most severely hit over the last two years.

With the UK due to implement its delayed import controls on products arriving from the EU in 2022, the FDF warns it will further impact the cost and availability of supplies of food from the EU, including essential ingredients and raw materials required by UK manufacturers.

"It is essential that the government works constructively with the EU to improve the implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement to ensure that it works for small businesses, otherwise this downturn will be here to stay."

John Whitehead, Food & Drink Exporters Association (FDEA), said it was 'encouraging' to see meat sales increase to Asian countries, where there is a big demand for pork.

“Our In Market Associates in both ASEAN and GCC markets report that there is also strong demand for added value products from the UK." However, he said small firms were struggling: "It is the SME producers of valueadded products hit hard by both Brexit and the pandemic who continue to need support to take advantage of these opportunities.”

NRW OFFICERS NRW HAVE BEEN CARRYING OUT POLLUTION CHECKS

Officers from NRW have been carrying out pollution control visits to farmers across Wales, offering advice.

fficers from NRW have been carrying out pollution control visits across Wales offering advice to farmers

lockdown in 2020, officers called 309 farms to follow up on progress, 242 of those visited have completed what was required.

A Natural Resources Wales project aiming to reduce agricultural pollution has visited over 800 dairy farms in Wales.

Meanwhile, 131 farms have also been re-visited following the reduction in coronavirus restrictions, allowing face to face meeting outside.

Officers from NRW have been carrying out pollution control visits across Wales offering advice to farmers, helping ensure they are compliant with pollution legislation.

Farm improvements include increasing slurry storage capacity and achieving reductions in livestock nitrogen loading to land.

The project was set up three years ago with the aim of helping reduce agricultural pollution in Wales.

Chris Thomas, dairy project coordinator, of NRW said: “Our dairy farm visits are quite often looked upon as something to be feared by farmers.

giving advice, guidance and helping farmers identify ways in which they can make positive changes on their farms, which doesn’t always mean having to spend a lot of money.

He added: “I visited a farm in mid Wales recently and after a tour, we were able to identify changes that could be made to make sure the farmer had an appropriate amount of slurry storage without the need for construction of a new or extended slurry or silage storage.

“The Dairy Project is part of a multi-agency approach to working with farmers to eliminate agricultural pollution and we work closely with our partners through the Wales."

GLOBAL POULTRY DEMAND ON THE RISE, BUT SUPPLY PRESSURE TO ENDURE

Global poultry markets are expected to be strong in 2022, on the back of reopening economies, increasing vaccination levels & economic conditions

lobal poultry markets are expected to be strong in 2022, on the back of reopening economies, increasing vaccination levels, and stronger economic conditions. Rabobank’s latest poultry report sees growing demand, but cautions that managing supply will be a key challenge in the coming year.

This will create an environment of stronger prices in many markets worldwide.

As general economic conditions improve around the world, demand for poultry follows, with global growth expected to reach 2% in 2022, despite the restrictions caused by supply challenges.

In the second half of 2021, supply growth was restricted by high costs, avian influenza and other disease concerns, reduced capacity, and limited availability of inputs. Rabobank expects supply to remain tight in 2022 due to high input prices, reduced labour availability in many countries, and logistics challenges.

Input costs are expected to stay high in 2022, with elevated feed, labour, logistics, energy, and construction costs. Feed prices in particular are expected to stay high and volatile, with Rabobank expecting a 5% increase in feed commodity costs in the first half of 2022. Prices for corn and soybeans are expected to peak in the third

quarter.

“In 2022, it is highly unlikely that food prices will go back to their five-year averages, as commodity prices are now supported by inflation in the general economy, low global stock levels, and labour shortages in many countries.

These high input prices will push producers to focus on yields, procurement, and efficiency in the value chain to reduce feed and labour use,” said Nan-Dirk Mulder, Senior Analyst – Animal Protein at Rabobank.

Global demand will be strong but volatile given the supplyside restrictions. Rabobank expects the market to see ups and downs in line with COVID-19 developments and resulting government measures. The industry will need to be ready to adjust sales channels accordingly.

The combination of stronger demand and these supply challenges will create an environment of stronger chicken prices. Mulder added: “The restricted supply and high input costs will, in our view, lead to relatively high global chicken prices until well into 2022 in most regions. In response, producers will look to step up investments in new capacity, although these will be slow due to high investment costs and uncertain market conditions. Producers will, therefore, focus on optimizing existing facilities to increase productivity, but in general, it will keep supply relatively tight.”

Global poultry traders will benefit from improved market conditions, but will also operate in a volatile market environment. Furthermore, from a product perspective, processed chicken markets will face the greatest challenges, due to the supply situation in Thailand, where a lack of labour has slowed production.

COMMENT: RETAILERS MUST PAY MORE IF THEY WANT BRITISH POULTRY Comment: Retailers must pay more if they want British poultry This month as per usual I have Zoomed into several meetings and was heartened to hear that the lobbying by the NFU and others on labour seems to have solved several company’s Christmas labour shortages, albeit at a great cost to them, as the labour had to come through agencies.

It was also good to see that the poultry and egg industry has reduced the use of antibiotics by 75% since 2014 and we have reached all the targets set for the industry.

The problem may be keeping the levels down there and I would like to remind some that sometimes birds need treating, especially at the moment when there seems to be on farm a bacterial infection that few seem to understand but is causing huge loses by way of rejects and culls.

In fact, in one shed we suffered 7.75% mortality and 8.3% rejects, the worst figures since we had Gumboro years ago. The new crop is in and so far, so good, with 0.6% mortality at nine days. I just hope this 30 | AgriNews | January 2022

Another bit of good news for poultry is that whilst meat consumption overall in the UK is down by 17% since 2008, from 103.7 grams per day per person to 86.3 grams, chicken consumption has increased.

All this leads me on to one question. Do retailers really want British poultry?

I ask this because of the comments and actions of some retailers and the prices they are offering. We as producers are facing cost increases on all fronts: feed, labour, transport, utilities plus now we have the danger of avian influenza.

If retailers really want British product going forwards, then they have to pay more now and not in six months’ time. They usually give us just about enough oxygen so we can breathe. Well, I can assure them the oxygen has run out. This especially true for the turkey industry.

My processor (2 Sisters) has put its head above the parapet and been very honest about the situation, I would ask, where is the rest of the industry?

Lastly, I watched the EPIC virtual conference, and what came out of it for me was what a great Industry we have, what a fantastic job we as growers and egg producers are doing, we just need to shout about it.

The work is being done to remove our Achilles Heel, which is soya in the rations. James Hook of Hook2Sisters said in his presentation that they have taken out soya in one of their farms, and the chicken grew well but the cost of the diet means more work needs to be done. As usual, when you give the industry a problem, we will find the solution without Government support.

So come on retailers, put your money where your mouth is in these unprecedented times.

HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went.

As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.
