ADAMA has announced the launch of a novel prothioconazole fungacide which uses a unique formulation

A

DAMA has announced the launch of a novel prothioconazole fungicide which uses a unique formulation to offer improved cereal and OSR disease control compared to the current market leader.

Soratel (250 g/l prothioconazole), features ADAMA’s new ‘AsorbitalTM’ formulation technology: comprising a unique combination of two solvents and an adjuvant, this novel formulation, which was developed at ADAMA’s global R&D facility at Neot Hovav, Israel, improves uptake of the fungicide into the leaf and enables excellent systemic movement of the active ingredient through the plant to the site of action against fungal cells.

“With the spring rapidly approaching, our global research and development and product registration teams have been working around the clock to make Soratel available to UK growers in time for the new spraying season,” explains 4 | AgriNews | March 2021

Mel Wardle, ADAMA’s fungicide product manager in the UK. “Our mission wasn’t simply to bring yet another generic

prothioconazole product to the market, but to develop an all-new formulation of this tried and tested active ingredient that offers real and tangible benefits above and beyond those already available from other prothioconazole based fungicides.”

EU trials have shown that, gramme for gramme per hectare, Soratel consistently and reliably provides a notable

improvement in disease control under a range of conditions compared to the current market leading prothioconazole product, Ms Wardle adds.

“Specifically, under UK conditions, trials have shown that Soratel is up to 13% more efficacious against fusarium than the current market leader, with similar results also reported when used to treat sclerotinia in oilseed rape growing in a maritime climate,” she explains.

Soratel can be used as a standalone product or as a tank mix partner with other fungicides to deliver a broader spectrum of activity and reliable disease control, Ms Wardle continues. “It offers a flexible range of application opportunities in cereals and oilseed rape and can be used at a wide range of treatment timings to provide improved protection against a broad spectrum of key diseases.”

SOIL TEMPERATURE KEY FOR EARLY NITROGEN APPLICATION SUCCESS

According to Yara agronomy manager, Mark Tucker, provided conditions are suitable, nitrogen application should coincide with the onset of spring root growth – which happens once root zone temperatures reach 4.5 to 5.0 degrees C – so that it is available for immediate uptake rather than sitting unused in the soil.

It can be getting to 4 degrees C by the end of February in an average situation. Once growth starts, we want to keep that momentum,” he stresses.

Although temperature monitoring is used commonly for grassland fertiliser applications, Mr Tucker sees scope for greater use in cereals. Accurately-timed early nitrogen is particularly important in barley, he says, to sustain the optimum number of ear-bearing tillers, which sets barley’s yield potential. It is particularly important in hybrid barley because it is sown at a lower seed rate, he notes.

This make sense financially and environmentally, he says, but soils this year have been tracking 0.5 degree C colder than last year – not helped by over-winter waterlogging and recent Arctic conditions – so regular monitoring is key.

Paul Roche, technical manager for hybrid barley breeder, Syngenta, agrees and says hybrid barley’s vigorous spring growth responds well to a first nitrogen application at about mid-tillering (GS25).

“Track your rising temperature proactively,” advises Mr Tucker. “Look at soil temperatures 5-10 cm deep because that’s where a lot of root activity is going to happen.

“This early application allows the already-robust root system to scavenge for nitrogen and other nutrients to really give the crop that early boost,” explains Mr Roche. “Fuelling hybrid barley’s early-season growth in this way also drives its suppression of grassweeds, such as black-grass, ryegrass and brome.

“Soil temperature across the country varies, but is generally at its lowest in early January then starts climbing.

“We’ve already started to check soil temperatures at our trials sites so we can get going just as soon as fields dry out and soil temperatures get in the zone.”

Provided conditions are suitable, for example by avoiding applications on soils that are covered in snow, frozen or waterlogged, Mr Roche says current Syngenta hybrid barley guidance is to apply 30% of the season’s total nitrogen dose at about GS25, followed by 50% at or just before GS31, and the final 20% two to three weeks after the second application, typically by the end of April.

To reduce workloads at the time of the final application, or to boost thin crops such as any recovering from waterlogged soils, he says an alternative programme of 50% at GS25 and 50% at or just before GS31 is another option.

According to Mark Tucker, waterlogging will also have caused soil nitrogen levels to decline. “As soon as we see waterlogging going, so that oxygen is available, that’s normally when we expect to see those first roots appearing,” Mr Tucker concludes.

A

new hybrid tractor tyre from Continental is now available in the UK and Ireland to help with the demanding road to field transitions of silage work.

The very high flexion (VF) tyre is fitted with a pressure monitoring sensor and has a tread pattern that offers comfort and durability on the road, whilst protecting the sward in the field.

“Hybrid tyres are safer, more efficient and offer better comfort to the operator.

Pressure sensor technology is the future of tyre functionality because tyres can run at the optimum pressure on the road and in the field.” says Continental’s agricultural tyre specialist, Richard Hutchins.

The Continental VF TractorMaster Hybrid tyre tread is designed to be comfortable on the road and offer excellent grip in the field. The sensor in the tyre communicates pressure and temperature to a terminal in the cab which helps the operator decide on the optimum running pressure.

When coupled with onboard inflation technology, tyre pressure can also be adjusted without leaving the tractor.

“Underinflated tyres on the road increase fuel consumption, whilst overinflated tyres in the field lead to increased soil compaction. The ContiPressureCheck™ sensor in the hybrid tyre helps the operator to monitor and choose the correct pressure to make the vehicle kinder to the soil and more efficient on the road,” says Mr Hutchins.

The tyre was developed using computer modelling in the research and development department at Continental’s agricultural manufacturing facility in Lousado, Portugal. “This tyre has been specifically designed for users frequently transitioning from field to road. It is perfect for silage making and tractors travelling long distances on the road,” he says.

Heavier, more powerful tractors are increasingly being used on the road. The need to reduce wear through road use has inspired the design of the new hybrid tyre.

“Heat build-up through heavy road use causes

conventional tyre rubber to soften and wear more quickly. However, the tread design of our new hybrid tyre helps to reduce the temperature of the tyre which reduces the wear rate,” he says.

VF tyres can carry forty percent more load than a standard tyre at the same pressure. Alternatively, in the field, the pressure can be lowered by forty percent, even when carrying the same load. The structure of the VF tyre carcass is more resistant than standard tyres so the tyre can operate at lower pressures in the field and at higher speeds on the road. “This will make hybrid tyres a popular choice for silage and harvest work where large loads need to be transported long distances,” concludes Mr Hutchins.

ith sugar beet growers facing their first full season without desmedipham, 2021 could be the year in which the sector witnesses a resurgence in the use of metamitron and quinmeracbased pre-emergence herbicides such as Goltix (700g/l metamitron) and Goltix Titan (525g/l metamitron and 40g/l quinmerac).

That is according to Bill Lankford, Herbicides Technical Specialist at ADAMA UK, who advises that as well as giving weed control an early season kickstart, the inclusion of a pre-emergence treatment as part of a sequenced herbicide programme can also boost crop yields by 7.5 to 21 tonnes per hectare.

“With desmedipham no longer available, sugar beet growers aren’t entirely able to depend on post-emergence treatments alone to achieve the necessary level of weed control,” Dr Lankford explains.

“Herbicide programmes will therefore need a little more thought this year.

DAMA Agricultural Solutions UK Ltd. has announced the promotion of Hank King and Will Nicholls to the new positions of Commercial Manager and Regional Agronomy Manager Lead respectively.

The appointments, which take effect from 1st March 2021, follow the departure of current Commercial Director, Sarah Rixon, who takes early retirement at the end of March.

In his role as Commercial Manager, Hank King – who has been promoted from his current position as National Account Manager – will manage a team of three National Account Managers (including current Regional Agronomy Manager, Matthew Martin) and a Commodities and Buying Group Manager (a role which will be filled by current Regional Agronomy Manager, Chris Stockdale).

This new commercial team will be responsible for developing and delivering ADAMA’s commercial strategy by working closely with the arable sector’s key buyers and customer commercial managers.

As Regional Agronomy Manager Lead, Will Nicholls (who has been promoted from his current position as Regional Agronomy Manager (RAM) for the North and North Midlands) will head a team of four RAMs who will be responsible for developing and implementing regional strategies to maximise uptake of ADAMA’s crop protection products by cultivating relationships and lines of communication with key distributors and independent agronomists.

“On behalf of everyone at ADAMA, I’d like take this opportunity to wish Sarah a very long and enjoyable retirement,” commented Ali Bosher, ADAMA UK’s interim General Manager.

“Her fun-loving but professional approach will be sorely missed by everyone, not only within ADAMA UK but throughout the industry, and we wish her every happiness in her new life in mid-Wales where she is already filling her evenings and weekends with long dog walks and cycling adventures.

With no prospect of holding the traditional graduation ceremony in 2020 attended by the students, their parents and dealer representatives, John Deere’s training team came up with an alternative plan. As well as the hamper there were additional prizes awarded to four top apprentices. The Tech Apprentice of the Year award went to Matthew McPherson from John Deere Forestry, Carlisle who received a crystal plaque and an iPad. The runners-up were William Anderson of J&S Montgomery, Beith and William Smith of Tallis Amos Group, Bibury, who each received high street vouchers worth £250. Parts Tech Apprentice of the Year was awarded to Corey Pilcher from Farol, Midhurst, who received a crystal plaque and an iPad. These annual awards arebased on the trainees’ consistently high standards of work, both at their dealerships and at the training centre, over the three years of the apprenticeship.

“Successfully completing an apprenticeship is an achievement that deserves proper recognition and we were determined that these graduates should not miss out,” says John Deere Limited training centre manager Allan Cochran.

“Once we settled on hampers we decided to make up these special prizes ourselves.

Sourcing produce near to our Langar headquarters enabled us to help support local businesses during the pandemic. We used the John Deere overnight parts distribution network to deliver the hampers and certificates to the sponsoring dealers, so that all the graduates could be presented with their awards on the same day.”

Tech Apprentice of the Year Matthew McPherson was the first trainee from John Deere Forestry to join the apprenticeship scheme in 2016.

A combination of workshop and in-the-field training enabled Matthew to progress very quickly to the role of field service engineer, a position he has held since 2018.

John Deere’s three-year Ag Tech and Turf Tech and twoyear Parts Tech apprenticeships involve students being trained in engineering, electronics, hydraulics, diagnostics, communication skills,computing, sales and marketing.

The programmes lead to IMI Level

2 & 3 Diplomas in Landbased Engineering and Vehicle Parts Competence, and registration at LTA Intermediate level in the industry’s Landbased Training Accreditation scheme.

In subsequent years qualified technicians undergo further education and adult training within the John Deere University programme, on a career path that can ultimately lead to the highest possible LTA Master Technician accreditation.

New student intakes are in September each year; apprentices need to be resident in the UK, sponsored by a John Deere dealer and aged 16 or over. The standard programmes include on-thejob training and assessment as well as eight weeks each year at the John Deere Apprentice Training Centre, when possible.

A

specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020. Noted for tremendous energy and after sales support, the owner, Henry White, is just 29 years old.

Attlefield Farm Machinery first stocked Spearhead equipment three years ago. During the last 18 months, their sales performance placed them at the top of Spearhead’s league table.

Henry White comes from a well-known family with industry heritage. His father, Patrick White, runs PJ Services, the well-known international haulage company.

The White family also run farms in Poland. They used a 450-9S flex-wing topper to bring the farm back into production after 20 years of being fallow. As a youngster, this, Henry says first sparked his interest in the product.

LIGHT LEAF SPOT WARNING TO OILSEED RAPE GROWERS

L

eaf samples sent to Bayer’s SpotCheck light leaf spot identification service are showing high levels of disease across the country, prompting warnings to growers to be on the alert for infection and to apply a fungicide as soon as symptoms are observed.

Ella Crawford, commercial technical manager at Bayer, says, “Throughout late autumn and into the early part of 2021 we were seeing evidence of light leaf spot at relatively high levels on the leaf samples from susceptible varieties, after incubation.

“During January, varying levels of disease were reported using the SpotCheck service, with 68% of samples showing positive signs, despite the colder weather.

And, even though the cold weather continued into February for much of the country, mid-month results for February show very high levels of disease, with nearly 98% of samples showing positive light leaf spot infection after incubation.”

While light leaf spot has historically been a disease of the north, it is now widespread, with infection found regularly in southern parts of the UK. A move to earlier drilling may be one of

the causes in this increase in infection, with growers trying to get crops established quickly, to grow away from pest pressure.

Light leaf spot can develop between 4 and 16°C, with rainfall and higher temperatures causing infection to spread more readily. And, while the recent cold snap may have supressed infection and disease expression for a while, any latent infection present in the leaf is more likely to develop as we move into early spring.

Philip Walker, plant pathologist at ADAS, who runs the SpotCheck tests, says, “There is always variation year on year with light leaf spot infection levels, but we are roughly on-par with last year when we saw high infection levels in samples as we came out of winter. It’s fair to say that all fields are now at risk, with infected samples received from farms across the UK. “Temperature and rainfall patterns as we move into spring will determine the risk of disease,” explains Philip.

“Last year, although we came out of winter with relatively high disease infection, the dry and hot spring prevented the disease from spreading

up the plant once we hit stem extension at GS31-39. This meant that light leaf spot didn’t reach the upper leaves or the pods.

“Light leaf spot spores are readily spread by rain splash, so if we get a more traditional warm and wet spring this season, growers should be aware that infection levels are likely to increase.”

Although there isn’t a threshold of disease incidence at which to spray for light leaf spot, there is a threshold at which growers can expect to see a yield loss. When plants are at early stem extension, growers can expect to lose around a third of yield potential if the crop is fully infected, although it only takes as much as 15% of plants infected with light leaf spot to see a 5% yield loss.

Weekly crop walking should include sampling of leaves and checking for signs of disease. These look like tiny grains of sugar on the leaf surface. They can be difficult to spot, so growers can choose to use Bayer’s SpotCheck service to help them justify any fungicide decisions.

SYSTEM 300+ PROVIDES MORE FEEDING OPTIONS The Kverneland Siloking self-propelled feeder range has been extended with the introduction of the system 300+ model

T

he Kverneland Siloking self-propelled feeder range has been extended with the introduction of the System 300+ model in the SelfLine 4.0 range.

This new version represents the smallest SelfLine 4.0 conventional-chassis machine currently available from Kverneland, and is offered with four capacities – 19, 22, 25 and 27 cubic metres. It slots into the range between the 13-22 cubic metre rear-steer, tricycle-style Compact and Premium chassis models, and the larger System 500+ and System 1000+ models that span a range of capacities from 19-32 cubic metres.

Based on the proven System 500+ version, this smaller System 300+ models offers an air-suspended chassis with four-wheel steering and a 25kph road speed. Power comes from a 218hp Volvo engine, with 1,000-hour service intervals contributing to lower cost of ownership.

Equipped with a 2m wide milling head that supplies the mixing tub using a 700mm wide belt conveyor, the system 300+ boasts twin vertical augers with adjustable, hardened knives and an integral FlowPlus hopper ring to improve bale processing.

Discharge options include a hydraulic cross-conveyor, and rear doors.

For the operator, the cab includes a 7in colour display showing machine functions including discharge door indicator, mixing speed and weighing data. Siloking’s programmable weighing system with feed management software is also included.

A colour camera system with quad display offers connectivity of up to a maximum of four cameras, offering scope to watch feed discharge and tub mixing, for example, in addition to a standard rear-view.

Those regularly handling high volumes of straw can now opt for an integral straw chopper.

Available across the SelfLine 4.0 range, this new development sits behind the milling head, and is activated by a push-button from the cab.

This hydraulically driven straw processor delivers a chop length from 2-4cm, helping to shorten mixing times when including straw within rations.

Dimensions of the System 300+ models include and overall height from 2.9-3.53m depending on body capacity; an overall width of 2.54m; and an overall length of 8.9-9.4m.

List price of the System 300+ self-propelled feeder models start at £249,104, for the 19 cubic metre model.

MULTI-CUT SILAGE COULD HELP DAIRY FARMS WEATHER DROUGHT EFFECTS

Making muti-cut grass silage could put dairy farms in a stronger position to withstand the effects of drought

M

aking multi-cut grass silage could put dairy farms in a stronger position to withstand the effects of drought on reducing grass growth, results of an Ecosyl survey suggest.

Conducted among more than 100 dairy farmers – 55% of whom were making grass silage conventionally, taking up to three cuts a year, and 45% of whom were using a multi-cut system to take at least four cuts – the survey compared the impact of last year’s dry spring and summer on silage production among the two groups.

This was to test the theory that an earlier start date to silaging with multi-cut can mean more silage has already been clamped if the weather turns dry later on.

Results revealed that by the end of May 2020 those making multi-cut had indeed made better progress, with all having taken at least one cut, a third (34%) having taken two cuts, and a tenth (9%) having taken more than two. That compared with 10% of the conventional silage makers who had yet to start cutting at all by that date, only 3% who had taken two cuts, and none who had progressed further.

Ecosyl silage expert, Jason Short, says: “There also appeared less anxiety about

silage quantity among the multi-cut group – with 11% reporting they had made more silage than normal by the end of May, versus only 5% saying this in the conventional group. Additionally, 64% of conventional makers expressed concern about the amount of silage they had made by then, compared with only 57% of the multi-cut group.

“Perhaps related to this, there was also more widespread concern about possible tighter availability or higher prices for bought-in feeds last winter among conventional silage makers, with 78% expressing concern, versus only 57% in the multi-cut group.

“All this suggests multicutters were more comfortable with their silage progress when the drought hit last season. Indeed, some 22% of conventional silage makers said recent dry seasons had made them think more about making multi-cut, yet only 2% of multi-cutters said they could definitely envisage switching back the other way.”

Although rain eventually returned in time for grass growth to resume in the latter part of last summer, Mr Short says such a turnaround cannot be guaranteed in every dry season, so it is important to be prepared.

In line with this, there also seemed greater awareness of methods for maximising silage quantity and quality among multi-cutters in response to last season’s challenges, he adds.

“A higher proportion said they were adopting practices such as: paying more attention to wilting times to reduce in-field losses; applying a proven additive to preserve more dry matter and/or nutrient content; and improving clamp consolidation, sealing and/or weighting to reduce losses.

“This attention to detail makes a lot of sense, because recent research by our scientists showed that although multicut grass delivered a higher yield over a season than taking three cuts, and was higher in quality, it did benefit from looking after.

“Without an additive, it suffered twice the dry matter loss as when ensiled using Ecosyl, and there was evidence of poorer protein preservation if left untreated.

“Viewed together, the survey and research suggest multicut does provide nutritional and yield advantages, and offers reassurance from having silage already clamped if the weather subsequently turns dry. However, it does need conserving properly,” Mr Short adds.

the body condition score is poor or cows are thin,” explains Mr Robinson.

Eurofins is the first testing company in the UK to offer dry NIRS testing, a process that requires the sample to be dried and ground to offer a more accurate sample for analysis. “This removes any inconsistencies in the shape and density of the sample to provide the most accurate result,” says Mr Robinson. “By removing the moisture from the sample, we are removing a layer we call the ‘fog’ that can adversely affect the test. This makes our NIRS tests the most accurate available,” he adds.

The tests can be used to analyse a wide variety of common forage materials including silages, fresh grass, or hay and even a total mixed ration (TMR). “Adjusting the TMR can be achieved more accurately and consistently by using regular testing. By using the tests, farmers will receive the most accurate forage measurement to enable them to maximise profit and yield by adjusting the ration to the optimum level when it is needed,” he concludes.

Poultry Sense develops health and environmental monitoring equipment for the poultry industry. In March 2019, MSD invested in Poultry Sense, to support its development. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Poultry Sense provides enhanced technology for poultry farmers to continuously track and analyse overall health performance for the life of the flock; it provides users the capability to measure, compare and record key

health and environmental indicators captured by battery-powered, wireless sensors in the poultry barn, as well as to identify patterns and trends to predict health and wellbeing and, ultimately, prevent disease and improve performance.

The sensors allow farmers to monitor and assess vital parameters by measuring weight, water usage, humidity, light, temperature and carbon dioxide.

Farmers can therefore gain insight into the housing environment, as well as bird health and performance.

“We are pleased to take this step forward with

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

A new line-up of trucks sit within each range to suit every customer’s requirements.

The Business range features the Utility trim and this base specification workhorse is offered in a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 and in three different cab types: single, extended and double cab. Developed with work in mind, the Utility features a wide range of practical and safety features to ensure drivers are as productive, safe and comfortable as possible.

The All-New Isuzu D-Max has an incredible amount of additional equipment on all variants so the Utility model is anything but basic.

Comfort and convenience are assured in this versatile pick-up thanks to automatic headlights with high beam assist, automatic windscreen wipers, speedsensitive power steering, DAB radio and a stop & start system.

Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are now standard on all models.

Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limiter and Lane Departure Warning & Prevention are fitted on every model and, for the first time in the pick-up segment, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor and Emergency Lane Keeping are fitted on all double cabs.

Utility models are ideally suited to working environments with features like an easily-cleanable vinyl flooring and durable steel wheels, while the bumpers, door mirrors and door handles are made from a hard-wearing black plastic.

The All-Purpose range consists of the DL20 and DL40, with ‘DL’ signifying that the rear diff-lock becomes a standard feature and the ‘20’ and ‘40’ demonstrating the model hierarchy. AllPurpose models are also available with an automatic transmission, which come with the additional ADAS functionality of Adaptive

The DL20 features heated front seats, rear parking sensors, front fog lights and a front centre armrest for increased comfort and practicality, while body-coloured front and rear bumpers, silver door handles, a medium grey radiator grille and 18” alloy wheels provide a more premium appearance.

DL40 adds a variety of sophisticated enhancements like distinctive Bi-LED headlights, LED front fog lights, daytime running lights and rear lights, a chrome radiator grille, silver side steps and two-tone 18” alloy wheels. DL40 models also include front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

Keyless entry, introduced from DL40, works on both the driver and passenger side and is accompanied by a push-button start system and welcome light. The interior benefits from leather upholstery, a leather steering wheel and an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

The 7” multifunction colour touchscreen is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and there’s also a dual-zone climate control system, which allows the driver and passenger to set different temperatures.

Topping off the new model line-up is V-Cross which sits within the Adventure range. It features distinguishing ‘Gun Metal’ exterior styling on the radiator grille, side steps, door mirrors, door handles and 18” alloy wheels.

The premium interior is practical and fuss-free: entertainment is provided by a 9” multifunction colour touchscreen with a CD player and eight speakers, there is an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and automatic headlight levelling, and the smart leather interior is complemented with V-Cross branded carpet mats.

There are up to eight colours to choose from on the All-New Isuzu D-Max. Utility models are available in four colours (Splash White, Mercury Silver, Obsidian Grey and Onyx

Black), DL20 models also come with the option of Spinel Red, the vibrant new Valencia Orange is offered from DL40 and the stylish Pearl White is exclusive to V-Cross models.
