FOCUS ON EFFICIENCIES AT MIDLANDS MACHINERY SHOW

Farm machinery and legislation is ever-evolving, and focussing on efficiencies is more crucial than ever

F

arm machinery and legislation is ever-evolving, and focussing on efficiencies is even more crucial than ever given the withdrawal of Basic Payments and need for profitability. Fortunately, visitors to the Midlands Machinery Show on 9-10 November will be given an insight into the latest equipment and advice to help their businesses to adapt and thrive. “Featuring 100s of exhibitors including national manufacturers, distributors and regional dealers, live demonstrations and a packed seminar programme, there will be something for everyone, from the smallest producer to the largest arable contractor,” says show manager Elizabeth Halsall. New this year will be a green power demonstration, featuring the latest electric tractors, telehandlers and mowers from the likes of Abiljo, Kramer, Avant and Iseki Tractors. There will also be a demonstration ring putting a wide range of telehandlers and wheeled loaders through their paces, including the latest models from Manitou, JCB, New Holland and Merlo. Changes to red diesel regulations, new machinery grants and how to work successfully with your contractor are just some of the topics being covered in a seminar with the National Association of Agricultural Contractors. Such discussions are particularly relevant as over 90% of farmers use contractors, says the association’s Jill Hewitt. “With the decline of subsidies, I think more

farmers are going to be looking to contractors rather than investing in machinery themselves.” Other topics featuring in the seminar programme include improving soil health and adapting to minimum tillage with Philip Wright, designing and building a new strip till with James Lee and Grange Machinery, and rainwater harvesting with JRH Water Management. There will also be a focus on the environment, with a range of technical topics from using biosolids to steps towards net zero. “Net zero represents a fantastic opportunity for agriculture, with farmers and growers brilliantly placed to both contribute to and benefit from the transition,” says Bruno Gardner, managing director of NFU Enzero. However, climate change does bring challenges – and increasingly uncertain weather patterns have directed arable farmers’ attention to optimising grain quality post-harvest to maximise returns. There is lots of new technology on the market to improve efficiencies, speed throughput and protect grain, which will be on display at the show. “The benefits of correctly and efficiently handling and storing grain post-harvest cannot be ignored any longer,” says Richard Flach, co-owner of grain drying specialist Flach and le-Roy. But keeping equipment running during busy times of year is always a concern – so supporting the next generation of agricultural

engineers is vital. The Midlands Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship Award is back for its fifth year – championing upcoming talent in the sector. “The award aims to raise the profile of the sector and support young people from diverse backgrounds and skill-sets to develop the abilities they need to embark on successful agricultural careers,” says Simon Eccleston, CEO of the Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society. Those who are interested in tractors and how they are put together have a particularly special treat this year: An exclusive insight into the entire production line at John Deere’s renowned Mannheim factory in Germany, thanks to a live streamed tour of the facility on both days of the show. “Building a modern tractor is extremely complex,” explains Chris Wiltshire, marketing manager at John Deere UK & Ireland. “Visitors will be able to see how we build and test our tractors, with commentary and close-up views which you wouldn’t even get at an in-person visit.” • The Midlands Machinery Show takes place on 9-10 November at Newark Showground. Entry is free but advanced registration is essential. For more information or to pre-register for your fast-tracked entry, visit www. midlandsmachineryshow.com.

CONTINENTAL: TYRE TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH THE AGES

Continental looks back on its history in agricultural tyres as it marks 150 years of tyre manufacturing.

A

s it marks 150 years of tyre manufacturing, Continental is celebrating a rich heritage that included the first pneumatic application for tractors whilst championing future-proofing technology that pushes the boundaries of performance and efficiency.

by Continental was the first step towards the radial tractor tyres used today. “The radial tyre, which now outsells the cross-ply tyre, is more gentle to the ground, has a lower rolling resistance and lasts longer,” he says.

In 1938 Continental launched the T4, becoming the first Hanover, October 11, 2021: manufacturer in Germany The brand began production to make a self-cleaning tyre in 1871 and in 1928 it was with a new tread design. “For the first to make a pneumatic the first time the tread lugs tractor tyre in Europe. “In were not connected, and this the beginning Continental enhanced traction. The design produced hoof buffers. These integrated small bends and were shoes for horses that had angles in the arrangement and a rubber coating to give more design in order to constantly grip on wet or icy surfaces,” improve the cleaning says Hans Dietrich, a customer properties of the tyre”. service representative, who has worked for Continental for Continental has also over 50 years. integrated digital technology into agricultural tyres. In the early decades of the ContiPressureCheck™ twentieth century many monitors the heat build-up and tractors ran on rubber coated pressure of the tyre to help the wheels. The introduction of operator make adjustments low-pressure pneumatic tyres that will reduce compaction

and increase the life of the tyre. “In the future, sensors will not only monitor tyre pressure and temperature, but also detect the condition of the ground beneath the tyre. By monitoring the deformation of the tyre, the sensor will also be able to detect the tyre load,” explains Benjamin Hübner, Product Line Manager for Agricultural Tyres. Additional data, such as weather conditions, crop and farm material weights could also be used to help more precisely determine the optimum running pressure. Once the data has been collated the tractor could use an on-board air supply to constantly regulate tyre pressure depending on speed, load, and ground conditions. “This will further increase operational efficiencies, reduce compaction and help farmers to increase yields and improve soil health,” concludes Mr Hübner. KUHN ADDS COMPACT AND LIGHTWEIGHT OPTION TO RANGE

Kuhn has added a new lighter weight and compact drill to its Venta range of pneumatic seeders

K

UHN has added a new lighter weight and compact drill to its Venta range of pneumatic seeders. Available initially as the 3 metre Venta 320, this new 100 series machine is designed for tractors in the 120 to 150 horsepower range. With an 850-litre hopper as standard, the drill has the option of an extension that increases capacity to 1,150 litres. The Venta 320 can be used in combination with KUHN’s HRB 302, HRB 303 or HR 304 power harrows. In combination, the seed drill is mounted on the power harrow frame, with the seeding bar guided by the roller frame. This means seeding depth is independent of the working depth of the power harrow and excellent ground following is maintained. Centralised adjustment of depth and pressure makes machine set-up simple and 6 | AgriNews | November 2021

easy. The seed bar comprises 20 or 24 rows of single disc elements, each with an internal cast

driving the power harrow. Improved fan design on this drill, with turbine rotation optimised in line with seed size, results in oil requirement being reduced from 35 litres/minute down to 26 litres/minute. Electrically powered volumetric metering on the drill helps to facilitate a wide operating range of between 1.5 to 430kg/ha and ensures all seed sizes are handled with precision. With the QS2 control unit, seed rate can be adjusted from the tractor cab. Calibration is easily accessible and simple to carry out.

DRONE AG: VR DRONE EXPERIENCE AT CROP TECH

Kuhn has added a new lighter weight and compact drill to its Venta range of pneumatic seeders

rone Ag has developed new functionality for its mobile app Skippy Scout including 360-degree field imaging with virtual reality (VR) compatibility and plant counting. The new version of the software will be on show at CropTec, at stand 1.10, where visitors can experience how it works using a VR headset. “Using VR offers a unique opportunity to see what the drone sees and understand how the technology works,” says Drone Ag founder Jack Wrangham.

interface, “Scout Spheres”, offers high resolution overviews of entire fields combined with the ability to inspect leaf-level scout point data. “We are the only provider to offer users a drone-enabled, full field overview that includes the ability to focus on any area of the field and choose where to inspect at leaflevel,” he says.

Skippy Scout is capable of counting emerging plants 20 times faster than walking the crop. It can count cereals, OSR, soybeans, beans, The new software will enable peas, and potatoes, offering users to see a whole field an accurate total of plants with a bird’s eye view. Rather in an image, as well as the than only viewing individual number of plants per square scouting points, the new metre. 10 | AgriNews | November 2021

“This development will enable existing and new users of Skippy to count emerging plants and then monitor the same fields to establish an accurate green area index (GAI) as the crop develops,” he says. The new 2.6 version of Skippy (2.6) also features terrain aware route planning which halves flight times to maximise battery life and offers users the fastest scouting technology. “The amount of time being saved will enable farmers to concentrate on the problem rather than spend all their time finding it, only to find they are too late to make a difference,” he concludes.

EIMA SHOW 2021: TOP TRACTOR DEVELOPMENTS AND CONCEPTS

EIMA Show 2021: Top tractor developments and concepts under Italian lights

A

s the first international machinery showcase for nearly two years, exhibitors at EIMA Show were awash with brand new machines, plenty of updates and concepts to sate the visitors’ demand for new equipment. Alex Heath reports on the tractor developments from the exhibition halls in Bologna. Manufacturer of orchard and speciality tractors Antonio Carraro decided to show a concept at its home show. The SRX Hybrid is based on the firm’s standard tractors but includes an electric motor for particularly challenging situations. Running a three-cylinder Kohler engine, developing 75hp, 95 per cent of the time, there is enough power available, says the manufacturer. However, for the 5 per cent when there is not enough, a 20kW motor kicks in, sending extra power to the wheels. The plug-in hybrid system also recovers energy when travelling downhill. Still in testing, there was no date put on when the tractor would be commercially released.

to 175hp and two, six cylinder models: X7.617 (165hp) and X7.618 (175hp) from a 6.7-litre unit from the same provider. All models are available with the P6-Drive powershift transmission, while the largest model in each engine configuration is available with VT-Drive CVT. Wheel bases are 2,651 and 2,760mm respectively. Maximum permissible weight is 11,500 kg and 710/60R38 rear tyres can be fitted. Robotics were a big focus of the show, however, one of the largest and most eye catching was from start-up company Earth Automations. Running a four-litre FPT engine putting out 75hp, the tracked tool carrier can be used autonomously or as a remote control. The rear linkage has a capacity of 3,535kg. Using RTK, accurate to 10mm, the robot uses artificial intelligence to adapt to is surroundings.

Cameras and sensors develop different maps to enable the robot to ‘see’ all around it and give the operator an in-depth McCormick had a host of its map of the terrain. stand was its first attempt at a hybrid machine, the Rex4 Electra. This 120hp model is fitted with an electric front axle. The diesel engine is used to send power to the rear axle and auxiliaries, however, a battery and electric motor power the front. The manufacturer says this offers a 10 per cent fuel saving and an increase in turning agility of 15 per cent, thanks to torque vectoring. The tractor can reach 40kph with four-wheel drive permanently engaged. In addition, the cab is suspended with two electro-hydraulic dampers that provide more adjustment for damping and levelling. One of the more unusual looking tractors was that from local firm BM Tractors. Designed with reverse drive applications in mind, the tractor features a 4.5-litre FPT engine rated at 170hp. The transmission is a hydrostat with three mechanical gears, offering speeds up to 40kph. The cab features a lever that allows the operating controls to swivel by 180deg. Twin ptos feature on the rear to run front or rear mounted attachments. There are various steering modes including crab and four wheel steer, offering a turn radius of 3.2m. Lift capacity is 4,500kg and the machine weighs the same.

MUNICIPAL COURSE MAINTAINS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS

Significant investment made over the past year by North Lincolnshire Council

N

ormanby Hall’s senior greenkeeper Michael Burgin (centre right) with dealer Simon Fountain of Adamsons (and dog Ruby) and greenkeepers Paul Jarvis, Richard Parsons, Gareth Hallberg & Jordan Quibell. Adjoining Normanby Hall Country Park near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, the beautiful 18-hole, par 72 golf course is set in 117 acres of mature woodland and parkland and is considered to be one of the best municipal courses in the country. Significant investment has been made here over the past year by North Lincolnshire Council. Improvements to the course have included new tees, pathways and drainage, the installation of a three-bay covered driving range with additional practice facilities, and refurbishment of the clubhouse – as well as a new John Deere course maintenance equipment fleet supplied by local dealer F G Adamson & Son at Langworth. Normanby Hall Golf Course senior greenkeeper Michael Burgin attended the first John Deere sponsored TPC Sawgrass volunteer programme in 2015, as a member of the Florida course’s maintenance team 14 | AgriNews | November 2021

preparing for the Players Championship. Michael won the greenkeepers’ nearest the pin competition at the famous 17th hole and still has the signed flag to prove it. Michael has been back to TPC Sawgrass as a volunteer every year since, and as he says, “Ever since my first trip there, I said this is the equipment that I want to be working with.” The golf course is now being maintained immaculately by the new fleet, which includes a 2550E hybrid electric triplex greens & surrounds mower, 7700A PrecisionCut fairway mower, 9009A TerrainCut rotary rough mower, 2030A ProGator with Dakota top dresser attachment, HPX 815E and TE electric Gator utility vehicles and a 3046R compact tractor, plus a TruTurf R50-11 greens roller and Charterhouse Redexim Speed Brush. “Having been promoted from assistant greenkeeper four years ago, I inherited a lot of equipment that was on its last legs and repair bills were mounting up,” says Michael. “The Council’s new management team had committed to maintaining and improving the course and its facilities, and ultimately investment in a new

machinery fleet became a key part of this commitment. “We went through a formal tender process in the end before reaching a final decision, essentially looking at value for money. Adamsons and John Deere won it by a country mile, ticking all the boxes for lead times, value, service and parts backup – all the criteria were more than met. “We already had some older John Deere machines, including compact tractors, and had established an excellent relationship with the dealership, so Adamson’s depot manager Simon Fountain and I looked at various options and we came up with a list of what we needed. “I knew I had to have specialist equipment for the greens, including a brush, top dresser and greens iron, to bring them up to the next level. Having our own top dresser has been a godsend, as we used to hire one in from the dealer just twice a year. Now we aim to top dress little and often, every two weeks or so, and we’ve already put on 40 tonnes of sand this year. It causes minimal disruption to play, but it’s made a huge difference to the standard of the greens.

NEW TRAILED BALE TRAILER - WAGO TR FROM JOSKIN

After taking over the Leboulch company in 2012, Joskin decided to rethink the development of the Leboulch trailers

A

fter taking over the Leboulch company (French manufacturer of agricultural tipping trailers, muck spreaders and bale trailers) in 2012, Joskin decided to rethink the development of the Leboulch bale trailers in order to add them to its own range. The objective was to use the experience of the Leboulch brand, but also JOSKIN’s technique and technological progress, to create an improved bale trailer adapted to the market needs The JOSKIN range of bale trailers is divided into the galvanised and painted models. Although these two versions have the same basic structure, which is mainly tubular for a better resistance to torsion, their design is not completely identical.

The side edges are slightly sloping, which gives the load more stability. Finally, the sides are reinforced with longitudinal ribs. The range of galvanised bale trailers can also be delivered with a treated wooden floor (4 cm thick). The painted models (in JOSKIN green) are designed with a non-slip chequered plate floor. They are also equipped with a special outer profile with a 2 cm edge to secure the load laterally. The JOSKIN range of bale trailers, whether galvanised or painted, is certified to European and French standards until 2025.

All JOSKIN trailed bale trailers benefit from the latest technical improvements developed in the different factories of the group. T

he new-generation T4 F/N/V offers a more powerful performance and is extended with a new 118 hp model at the top of the range. The engine, advanced hydraulics and specifications packed in a supremely compact tractor with a new, low-height hood make it a true game-changer in the specialty sector The T3F Series has been upgraded to deliver more power, a clean performance and excellent fuel economy with its new Stage V engine and a compact aftertreatment system with DOC and DPF. The new T3LP combines a low profile with high ground clearance, excellent stability and manoeuvrability, extending New Holland’s offer in the value specialty segment New Holland Agriculture is renewing and extending its offering of specialty tractors, further consolidating its undisputed leadership of the sector, with the newgeneration T4 F/N/V series, the updated Stage V T3F range, and the brand-new T3LP low profile model. These are the latest product launches in New Holland’s specialty offering that has constantly innovated, and has been recognised with multiple awards at the EIMA

fair, including the Best of Specialized title in the Tractor of the Year Awards in 2020, 2014 and 2013 and the Technical Innovation award for the BlueCab™ in 2012. The latest recognition, in this year’s edition of the fair, was the Technical Innovation awarded to a project in partnership with Nobili on a T4V equipped with e-Source powering a fully electrified e-Sprayer and e-Mower. Oscar Baroncelli, New Holland Agriculture Tractors Product Management Leader Global, said: “New Holland is the undisputed leader in the specialty tractor segment. We have remained at the forefront of this sector for seven decades by constantly innovating, upgrading and extending our uniquely wide offering to meet the most specialized requirements of our customers. That is what we are doing, once again, with the new products we are launching today.” New-generation T4 F/N/V: best-in-class comfort, more power, productivity and efficiency The new T4 F/N/V Series meets Stage V emissions standards with new F5C engines and after-treatment system that deliver more power and torque with a

clean performance. The 80 model at the low end of the range features a 3.4-litre, 2-valve engine with an aftertreatment system with DOC and DPF that requires no AdBlue, resulting in lower cost of ownership. The other models in the range feature a 3.6-litre, 4-valve engine and a Compact HI-eSCR2aftertreatment system with DOC and SCRoF . A new model, the T4.120 V/N/F, has been added at the top of the range. It delivers a powerful performance with up to 88kW / 118 hp, capable of meeting the engine power requirements for PTO applications and multiple implements. The legendary manoeuvrability of this specialist range is further enhanced by the new hood, which has been entirely redesigned to provide the lowest hood height in the segment for the Specialty version. The engine layout has been entirely redesigned so that the new hood comfortably houses the complete after-treatment system. The low height and compact size of the hood raises the bar on visibility and safety, as well as reducing potential damage to branches when working under the fruit tree canopy. SCOUR: KEEPING AUTUMN BORN CALVES HEALTHY Scour is the biggest killer of calves on farms under one month of age and with calves arriving thick and fast keeping them healthy is a priority

S

cour is the biggest killer of calves on farms under one month of age and with calves arriving thick and fast onto autumn-calving farms keeping calves healthy is a priority. Unfortunately livestock will become sick in many cases which places a large amount of stress on farmers. Cases can be reduced by having high standards of hygiene in the calf shed, including clean feeders, footbath at entrance and not wearing visible soiled clothes into the shed. Scour Most cases of scour can be attributed to poor hygiene in the calf house and feeding equipment. Ideally feeding equipment should be cleaned after each 26 | AgriNews | November 2021

use and stored where calves do not have access. Nutritional scour can be caused by several things such as insufficient colostrum after birth, too much milk and or milk replacer being too concentrated, lumpy or not mixed properly. Another factor that can cause cases is lack of consistent feeding of calves, such as feeding different amounts or at irregular times. Cold, damp, draughty or humid housing can also cause susceptibility to scour. Infectious Scours Infectious scours are caused by a number of pathogens. All scour outbreaks should be investigated early by consulting your vet who can arrange for faecal samples to be sent to a lab.

This will help to identify the pathogen causing the problem and means you can develop a targeted treatment plan for the pathogen. Some vets will offer a quick diagnostic faecal sample test on farm. Pathogens are often picked up from the environment, so lack of cleanliness in the calving area and in the calf rearing house are major risk factors. Any calf that develops scour should be isolated from the other calves immediately. Always isolate infected calves in a warm environment and treat them for the pathogen causing the scour. If calf scour is, or has been, an issue you should develop a vaccination programme and create a future prevention health plan.

UK SHEEP KILL EXCEPTIONALLY LOW IN SEPTEMBER

The UK sheep kill for the month of September has been described as being exceptionally low for the time of year

T

he UK sheep kill for the month of September has been described as being exceptionally low for the time of year. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) said that the lamb kill for September stood at just over one million head – which was back 16% year-on-year. Furthermore, the ewe kill fell by 15% to stand at 108,000 head for last month. Why Is The Sheep Kill Down? Indications from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) June survey suggest that the lamb crop for 2021 has fallen by 3-4%. However, in Scotland, the opposite story is being seen, with the lamb crop on the rise.

The findings, as of now, are only provisional, with the full results, the AHDB said, unavailable until December.

“However, the buoyant store lamb prices, and strong finished prices suggest that supply is not quite so plentiful.”

The sheep kill, in the UK, for the last two months has been “significantly below what would be expected”.

‘Ewe Kill Suspiciously Low’ Furthermore, the UK ewe kill was described as “suspiciously low for over a year now”.

Up to and including September, 8.3 million lambs have been processed – which is a fall of 11% or 1.07 million lambs on the previous year, the AHDB said.

The ewe kill up to and including September for this year is back 22% or 237,000 head and stands at 854,000 head. However, the AHDB noted that the decline recorded in Defra slaughter figures is not reflected in cull ewe throughput at marts.

Rebecca Wright of the AHDB said: “It is hard to know if the lambs are still out there or not. “Looking at the June survey data for England and Scotland, combined with Defra slaughter data, would suggest there are a significant number of lambs still available for production.

Looking at UK sheepmeat production for September, it stood at 23,000t. For the year to date, production stands at 190,000t – back 25,000t or 11% on 2020 levels. November 2021 | AgriNews | 27

BVA CALLS FOR CLEARER COMMITMENTS ON WELFARE IN TRADE DEALS The BVA has called for much clearer commitments to animal welfare in international trade after the UK government set its response to TAC report James Russell, BVA’s senior vice president The British Veterinary Association has called for much clearer commitments to animal welfare in international trade after the UK Government set out its response to the Trade and Agriculture Commission (TAC) report.

agreements (FTAs) and wider trade policy that “reflects the particular challenges faced by developing countries in meeting international agri-food standards”. BVA is concerned that without safeguards this

The Government response sets out commentary on each of the key recommendations from the TAC report. In relation to tariff liberalisation and animal welfare standards (recommendation 8), the TAC called for zero tariffs and quotas only where equivalence to UK standards is demonstrated. The Government response refers to securing animal welfare commitments but falls short of agreeing to this important recommendation. On animal welfare more broadly (recommendation 4) the TAC called for the UK to play a leadership role to raise worldwide standards of animal welfare. the environment. James Russell, BVA’s senior vice president, said: “BVA fully supported the Trade and Agriculture Commission’s recommendations and had expressed concern at the delayed response from the Government while free trade negotiations were in full swing. “The Government rightly states that the UK’s high animal welfare and environmental standards are a red line in trade deals but we’re concerned that this response falls short of setting out the mechanisms for meeting that goal.”

could open up the UK to lower welfare imports. The UK Government has also announced the membership of the new TAC, chaired by Lorand Bartels, Professor of International Law. The new TAC will have a formal role to inform parliamentarians and the public on whether and how new FTAs are consistent with UK laws on animal welfare, animal and plant health, and

Mr Russell added: “We welcome the announcement of the new Commission, including members from the veterinary profession, and look forward to ongoing engagement. “But to give UK trade objectives more teeth we want to see much clearer commitments to animal welfare and detail of how UK standards will be safeguarded.”

WALES WORTH HIT PART OF THE UK FOR VET SHORTAGES

Wales has seen an 8% increase in the number of veterinary job listings over the last month

W

ales has seen an 8% increase in the number of veterinary job listings over the past month, according to Eville & Jones, the leading supplier of official veterinary controls in Europe. The company has over 30 vacancies for veterinary roles in Wales, including area managers, export veterinarians, certification support officers and meat hygiene inspectors, making

it the area with the most vacancies in the UK. Usually, vets from within the EU have plugged the shortfall in the UK, but since Brexit, this number has dropped rapidly. This is due to new rules set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), that require vets to formally meet a high standard of English at level 7, compared to level 4.1 which is required for a skilled work visa. Eville & Jones said Aberystwyth was the only

veterinary university in Wales, and this won’t produce graduates for a few more years. The company said it was calling for qualified vets to seriously think about applying for a role within veterinary public health, which plays a crucial role in ensuring food production levels can be maintained and checked safely.

FOOD INDUSTRY LEADERS CALL ON GOVERNMENT TO BAN CAGES

Food industry giants including Nestlé, Kraft, Heinz, Nando’s and greggs have endorsed Beatrice’s Bill

F

ood industry giants including Nestlé, KraftHeinz, Nando’s and Greggs have endorsed Beatrice’s Bill, which seeks to end cages for egg-laying hens. Their intervention comes in the form of a letter and marks the first time UK corporations have spoken out about the persisting use of cages in egg production. Jojo de Noronha, president of Kraft-Heinz Northern Europe, said “We are proud to have committed to ending the use of cages for laying hens in our supply chain. It’s now time for policy makers to follow suit so that all laying hens are spared this suffering. We are showing that the transition is possible and now it’s up to the government to take the reins.” Similarly, Nestlé, the largest food and drink company in the world, said: “Farm animals deserve decent welfare standards. Nestlé supports a phasing out of caged systems 32 | AgriNews | November 2021

for all egg laying hens, building on industry efforts to date.” Beatrice’s Bill is at the heart of a campaign against enriched battery cages headed by The Humane League and the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation. It takes its name from Beatrice, a hen rescued from the cruelty of caged farming. The bill passed its first reading in the House of Commons on September 22. It was sponsored by Henry Smith MP and received endorsement from Caroline Lucas MP amongst others.

caging hens, while bans are on the way in Germany, Belgium, Czechia and Slovakia. Seven US states have phased out cage-egg production, and the EU has resolved to end the use of cages in farming by 2027. Cordelia Britton, head of campaigns at The Humane League UK, said: “The government’s welcome words about supporting animal welfare will remain unserious until the use of cages in egg production is banned.

A petition in support of the legislation has reached more than 85,000 signatures.

“We call upon the government and Parliament to listen to the food industry and the general public and support this legislation.”

All major UK food companies have committed to making their supply chains cagefree by 2025, which puts the government one step behind business.

As many as 16 million chickens languish in cages across the UK, despite 76% of UK consumers considering the banning of cages to be a priority issue.

Switzerland, Luxembourg and Austria have already banned

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.
