Story Summary The uprising of the Chilean Navy in 1931 in the port of Coquimbo is shown through events that occur in a family that lives in the upper part of the port. The uprising of the seafaring takes place in protest against the reduction of salaries for all public employees. This fact unleashes a variety of discomforts that were accumulated in the town by years of poverty. The variables that built this context were: 1. The global financial bankruptcy of 1929. 2. The fall in the price of saltpeter in world markets. Until that moment this mineral was the main natural resource of export of the country. 3. The political instability created by the local economic / political elite seeking to save their interests threatened by capitalist chaos. These factors led the government to make erroneous decisions that affected the people. One of them, and that is what triggers this story, is the reduction of salaries to the entire public administration, including the armed forces. In 1919 a woman with a son and a daughter had settled in the port. They were fleeing poverty and violence from the countryside and in the port there were relatives who gave it a space where they could start a life not free of danger and violence.

Why do you have to draw this story? 1. The revolt of the Chilean Navy has never been recognized within the official history of the country. 2. I knew this story because my mother remembered it as part of her family history, she lived in the port of Coquimbo. 3. The movement was cutting edge in its demands. Among them were: a. that the external debt be paid by the owners of capital in Chile b. agrarian reform c. the repatriation of capitals of Chilean businessmen abroad to overcome the economic crisis 4. It is the first air attack on the American continent. It is a confrontation with new technologies and war machines in a small port with twentythree thousand inhabitants who only knew ships and trains. The media and information were scarce. The first radio station was created in 1938. Seeing planes appear and that dropped bombs on ships and submarines in the bay, it must have been something like a science fiction story.

Narrative lines This comic is being built on four narrative lines: 1. Story of the facts from a family that observes the facts almost like a silent movie 2. Story of the rebel sailors 3. Story from the attacking planes 4. Story from the government that seeks to crush the movement and hide the demands.
