Depois de vários meses de trabalho, estamos muito felizes em compartilhar a estreia da revista AHEAD. Contamos com um time de profissionais incríveis para pensar em cada detalhe, do projeto gráfico ao ângulo de cada um dos diferentes conteúdos. Alguns pilares conduzem a revista: viagem, gastronomia, moda, motor e negócios. É uma boa combinação que dá muito prazer em produzir – e esperamos que também inspire a leitura. Escolhemos nossa capa número 1 a dedo. O recorte da obra do artista Nuno Ramos, que pesa 300 quilos, diz muito mais do que o que se vê na colorida pintura feita com vaselina, cera de abelha, pigmentos, tinta a óleo, tecidos, plásticos e metais sobre madeira. Essa técnica milenar, chamada de encáustica, o leva de volta à sua própria arte dos anos 1980. Nesse intervalo de décadas, Nuno publicou muitos livros, escreveu canções, desenhou, criou, provocou. Em exposição na Anita Schwartz Galeria de Arte até novembro, sua arte contemporânea também estará na Art Basel, em Miami, em dezembro. O destino na Flórida e sua constante transformação a partir da arte é nosso tema de estreia na seção de viagem. E divide o espaço da revista com outros assuntos interessantes, como a harmonia do meio ambiente com a arquitetura, a alta gastronomia e a potência dos motores de um carro esportivo de luxo, além da busca pelo artesanal na moda e da inquietação do presidente da TAG Heuer no Brasil desperta por um livro. Espero que gostem!

After months of work, we’re very happy to share the debut of AHEAD magazine. We had an incredible team of pros to figure out every detail, from the graphic design to the angle of each one of the various contents. Some pillars guide the magazine: travel, food, fashion, motor and business. It is a good and very pleasurable combination to produce – and we hope that it’s also inspiring to read. We handpicked our number 1 cover. The cutout from artist Nuno Ramos’ work, which weighs 660 lbs., says a lot more than what can be seen in the colorful painting made out of Vaseline, beeswax, pigments, oil paint, fabric, plastics and metals over wood. This ancient technique, known as encaustic, takes him back to his own art from the 1980s. In this interval of a few decades, Nuno published many books, wrote songs, drew, created, provoked. In exhibition at Anita Schwartz Art Gallery until November, Nuno’s contemporary art will also be present in Miami’s Art Basel, in December. The Florida destination and its constant transformation through art is our debut theme in the travel section. And it shares the magazine space with other interesting subjects, like the harmony between environment and architecture, high gastronomy and the power of the engines of a luxury sports car, as well as the search for handicraft fashion and the restlessness a book caused on the President of TAG Heuer Brazil. A exposição “Degas Danse Dessin” entra em cartaz no final de novembro e segue até 25 de fevereiro de 2018.

Três boas surpresas em forma de trios: cantores juntam força e talento em novas canções Three good surprises in the arrangement of trios: singers join strength and talent in new songs

Música é uma arte coletiva. E tem inspirado consagrados cantores brasileiros a se reunirem em trios. Fãs dos Tribalistas tiveram uma grata surpresa com o lançamento de faixas inéditas no Spotify. Os gigantes da música popular brasileira Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa e Nando Reis são a Trinca de Ases. E os filhos de Tim Maia, Wilson Simonal e Jair Rodrigues formam o autoexplicativo Os Filhos dos Caras. Os Tribalistas não apresentavam novas músicas em conjunto desde 2002. Mas como Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte e Carlinhos Brown fazem questão de explicar, nunca deixaram de compor juntos. “Sentimos que tínhamos em mãos uma coleção de canções que soavam mais potentes quando cantadas pelos três juntos”, explica Marisa sobre o porquê de gravarem agora. Gal Costa e Gilberto Gil já têm histórico de parceria. Após um novo encontro com Nando Reis, resolveram unir os diferentes estilos musicais, explorando arranjos em um show coletivo que viaja o país. Os três brincam que Gal e Gil seriam os pais; e Nando o filho rebelde, cria do rock. E se a união dos Filhos dos Caras pode parecer coisa nova para o público, Léo Maia, Wilson Simoninha e Jair Oliveira se conhecem há décadas: “Ficávamos nos vendo na entrada e saída de shows e queríamos colaborar”, lembra Simoninha. “Mas foi neste ano, em Salvador, que decidimos levar a coisa adiante.” O público agradece. “É uma explosão quando toca uma música como ‘País Tropical’”, diz Simoninha, citando a música gravada originalmente por seu pai.

// Music is a collective art. And it has inspired renowned Brazilian singers to get together in trios. Tribalistas fans had a wonderful surprise with the release of new tracks on Spotify. Brazilian popular music giants Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Nando Reis are Trinca de Ases. And the offsprings of Tim Maia, Wilson Simonal and Jair Rodrigues form the self-explanatory “Os Filhos dos Caras” (“The guys’ sons”). Tribalistas hadn’t put out new songs together since 2002. But as Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown explain, they never stopped composing together. “We felt we had at hand a collection of songs that sounded stronger when sung by the three of us together,” Marisa explains the reason for a new recording. Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil have a partnership going back. After a new meeting with Nando Reis, they decided to merge the different musical styles, exploring arrangements in a collective show that tours the country. The three joke around saying that Gal and Gil would be the parents and Nando a rock’n roll-fed rebel son. And if the union of Filhos dos Caras seems like something new to the public, Léo Maia,Wilson Simoninha and Jair Oliveira have known each other for decades: “We saw each other going in and out of concerts and wanted to collaborate,” recalls Simoninha. “But it was this year, in Salvador, that we decided to take things one step further.” The public is glad. “It’s an explosion when we play a song like ‘País Tropical’,” says Simoninha, citing the song originally recorded by his father.

om apenas 28 anos de idade e quatro discos lançados, a australiana Sarah Mckenzie é considerada um dos expoentes da nova geração do jazz. Tanto que foi a única convidada estrangeira a se apresentar na inauguração do Blue Note Rio, filial carioca do renomado clube de jazz de Nova York, em setembro. Em entrevista exclusiva, Sarah revelou sua admiração pela música brasileira. E prometeu: vai compor sobre sua experiência no país da bossa nova. “Sou apaixonada por música brasileira e por [Antônio Carlos] Jobim. Então ver de perto o Corcovado e a praia de Ipanema que ele descreve nas canções foi fantástico”, disse Sarah durante a conversa na área de lazer do hotel Tivoli Mofarrej, em São Paulo, mas ainda impactada pela beleza da Cidade Maravilhosa. “É uma pena que eu nunca pude ver uma apresentação do Jobim ao vivo. Mas tenho todos os seus discos.”

// At only 28 years of age and four CDs, Australia’s Sarah Mckenzie is considered one of the exponents of the new jazz generation. So much so that she was the only foreign guest performing at the inauguration of Blue Note Rio, Rio de Janeiro branch of the renowned New York jazz club, in September. In an exclusive interview, Sarah revealed her admiration for Brazilian music. And promised: she will write songs about her experience in the birthplace of bossa nova. “I’m in love with Brazilian music and [Antônio Carlos] Jobim. So I came to take a closer look at Corcovado and Ipanema Beach, which he describes in his songs, and it was fantastic,” remarked Sarah during a conversation in the leisure area of hotel Tivoli Mofarrej, in São Paulo, but still struck by the beauty of the Marvelous City. “It’s a shame I could never see a live Jobim presentation. But I have all his records.” The admiration is genuine. In her latest work, “Paris In The Rain”, Sarah recorded a version of the song “Triste”, written by Jobim in 1966 and interpreted by geniuses like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. “It’s a beautiful composition with very interesting

INSPIRAÇÃO

Por muito pouco, Sarah não abandonou a música. Ela tinha nove anos de idade e estudava piano desde os cinco. Mas estava difícil encontrar motivação para as aulas, enquanto seus amigos se divertiam nos parques e praias de Melbourne. Foi quando seu pai trocou o professor de música clássica por um professor de blues que Sarah se encontrou na música – e a música a encontrou. Enquanto os outros adolescentes ouviam

It was at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Perth, where she majored in jazz, that Sarah had her first contact with bossa nova. The connection was immediate. “Elis Regina is my favorite singer. I love cello player Jaques Morelenbaum, he’s amazing. And I had the opportunity of meeting Ivan Lins at a concert in London,” remarks an excited Sarah. She already recorded a bossa nova-style version of “Love me Tender”, hit made famous by Elvis Presley, and interpreted “Dindi”, by Tom Jobim, in her debut album (“Don’t Tempt Me”, 2011). But singing in Portuguese, for the time being, is not in her plans. “When I sing, I like to do justice to the music and to the composers. I can’t do that in Portuguese,” she answers in good spirits. INSPIRATION

Sarah almost abandoned music. She was nine and studied piano since five. But it was hard finding motivation for her classes when her friends where having fun at the parks and beaches of Melbourne. It was only when her father changed the classical music teacher for a blues teacher that Sarah found her space in music – and music found its space in Sarah. While other adolescents listened to The Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls, Sarah discovered jazz icons from the 1950s and 1960s, like pianists Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris. “It was my musical secret,” she recalls. “I didn’t even know jazz artists still existed. Only when I met legendary jazz artist James Morrison did I figure it was possible to be a jazz musician in the 2000s and still be cool.” Sarah’s musical secret was revealed and the Australian’s ascent was immediate. She majored in jazz and received a full scholarship to study in Boston, USA, at Berklee College of Music – the most

Só quando conheci o lendário jazzista australiano James Morrison que eu percebi que era possível ser um músico de jazz nos anos 2000 e ainda assim ser cool.” O segredo musical de Sarah veio à tona, e a ascensão da australiana foi imediata. Ela se tornou bacharel em jazz e ganhou uma bolsa integral para estudar em Boston, nos Estados Unidos, na Berklee College of Music – a escola de música mais importante do planeta. important jazz school in the world. Her debut album won the award for best Australian jazz album, projecting Sarah internationally. “I’m in love with music. Music was always present in my life. I studied at Berklee with the objective of learning more and more, of knowing many masters of music of different styles,” she comments. Sarah is a singer, composer and pianist, and has an active voice in the production of her own records. “I really want to find my place in music history.” The CD “Paris in The Rain”, released in January, maintains the same high level as the previous works. Sarah composed the title tune after visiting Paris for the first time, in a rainy late afternoon. She also sings “When in Rome”, by Cy Coleman, as a tribute to the days she spent in the Italian capital. I ask her if we can expect a song inspired by Rio de Janeiro and Sarah promises: “I will do it, for sure. It was raining when I arrived in Rio. Who knows, ‘Rio in the Rain’ could be good,” she answers laughing.

Unexpected textures and flavors are the starting point of a delicious and surprising lunch at Tuju, in São Paulo. Helmed by creative chef Ivan Ralston, the new Brazilian cuisine restaurant is a far cry from common place in its degustation menus. The search for different, fresh and tasty ingredients and the imagination and refined technique in preparation transform the meals of this Vila Madalena house in a unique experience. Recognition came early. Tuju, name of a bird from the American continent, received its Michelin star in 2015, eight months after its inauguration. In 2016 it entered into the prestigious list of the 50 best of Latin America of British magazine “Restaurant”. The menu is frequently renewed, in accordance with the seasons’ products. After the combination of bottarga and ant, I ventured into a five step menu – the restaurant’s biggest success. I chose the veggie version. A delicate couscous with Amazon uarini flour and roots and, as a chaser, a cold peanut soup with melon are the entrées of the day. There’s also a 12-step menu, with a vegetarian option. All four menus are served at lunch and dinner. Only at lunch is it possible to take a shortcut, with entrée, main dish and dessert. A high gastronomy experience in a sheltering ambiance with nice and informal service. Cradled by a great soundtrack, which is not surprising in a restaurant whose chef studied music before

ção continua com ravióli de pupunha recheado de alcachofra com molho de queijo da Serra da Canastra. Depois, omelete com ervilha doce. Levíssimos, com consistência perfeita, os ovos foram um dos pontos altos. Entre ravióli e omelete, não resisti e provei um peixe maravilhoso com pamonha e folhas, do cardápio de 12 fases. Belos pratos de cerâmica da japonesa Kimi Nii, que mora em São Paulo desde criança, são base e moldura para o que sai da ambiciosa cozinha. A sobremesa foi em dose dupla. A panna cotta vem com sorvete de cachaça em calda de uva com mirtilos, pedacinhos de pitaia e pinhão tostado. Para encerrar, sorbet de morango, ricota, paçoca e azeite, uma das sobremesas do cardápio de 12 etapas. Ivan Ralston tem um sorvete com leite de ovelha que faz tanto sucesso que agora será comercializado. No menu harmonizado, o sommelier Adiu Bastos trabalha em parceria com Maurício Barbosa, responsável pelo bar, que fabrica no restaurante a maior parte dos ingredientes de seus drinques. Para sobremesa, Cave Amadeu Moscatel, da família Geisse. Entre um e outro passaram pelos copos frizzante italiano, riesling alemão de colheita tardia, merlot, também alemão, sauvignon blanc chileno do Vale de Casablanca e viognier uruguaio. Vinhos que refletem garimpo cuidadoso em percurso interessante.

deciding to be a cook, the meal continues with peach-palm ravioli stuffed with artichoke and Serra da Canastra cheese sauce. Afterwards, a sweet pea omelet. Extremely light, with the perfect consistency, the eggs were one of the highlights. Between the ravioli and the omelet, I couldn’t resist the allure of a wonderful fish with pamonha (sweet corn paste) and leaves from the 12-step menu. Nice Ceramics dishes by Japan’s Kimi Nii, who lives in São Paulo since she was a child, are the base and the frame for what comes out of the bold kitchen. The dessert was presented in a double dose. The panna cotta came with cachaça ice cream and grape and blueberry syrup, pieces of toasted pitaya and pine nut. For a finishing touch, strawberry, ricotta, paçoca (ground peanut, sugar and salts) and olive oil sorbet, one of the desserts from the 12 step menu. Ivan Ralston serves a sheep’s milk ice cream which is so successful that it will soon be commercialized. In the harmonized menu, wine steward Adiu Bastos works alongside Maurício Barbosa, responsible for the bar, which manufactures at the restaurant most of the ingredients for their drinks. For dessert, Cave Amadeu Moscatel, from the Geisse family. In between sips, the glasses were filled with an Italian frizzante, a late harvest German Riesling, an also German merlot, a Chilean sauvignon blanc from Casablanca Valley and a Uruguayan viognier. Wines that reflect careful mining in an interesting itinerary.

Com a restauração do Art Deco District de Miami Beach, no começo dos anos 1990, os renovados prédios baixos coloridos em tons pastéis passaram a atrair editoriais de moda das revistas mais famosas do mundo. Miami estava mudada e um novo tipo de turista começou a marcar no mapa a cidade do sul da Flórida. Uma década depois, em 2002, o art déco e as festas sem fim de South Beach já eram clichê. Com a realização da primeira Art Basel Miami Beach, a arte contemporânea e a valorização do design redefiniram a cidade mais uma vez, agora como destino turístico cosmopolita e luxuoso. Grandes colecionadores particulares de arte contemporânea, como Martin Margulies e o casal Rosa e Carlos de La Cruz, abriram suas próprias galerias para expor seus acervos. Miami continua uma festa, ainda que diferente. Este ano, a edição americana da imensa e prestigiosa feira de arte suíça comemora 15 anos, assim como os Wynwood Walls. With the renovation of Miami Beach’s Art Deco District, in the early 1990s, the renewed pastel-toned small and colorful buildings began to attract fashion editorials of the world’s most famous magazines. Miami was already changing and a new kind of tourist started marking the Southern Florida city on the map. A decade later, in 2002, South Beach’s art deco and its endless parties had become a cliché. With the first Art Basel Miami Beach, the contemporary art and the valorization of design have once again redefined the city, now as a cosmopolitan and luxurious tourist destination. Great private contemporary art collectors, like Martin Margulies and couple Rosa and Carlos de La Cruz, opened their own galleries to showcase their collections. Miami is still a feast, albeit of a different kind. This year, the American edition of the huge and prestigious Swiss art fair turns 15. The Wynwood Walls too. The walls of the run-down Wynwood district were graffiti painted for the first time by guest artists in 2002. Since then, Miami sizzles in early December, when the fair brings together more than 250 worldwide galleries to an estimated public of more than 70 thousand persons. Jot down the 2017 dates: December 7 to 10. Margulies Collection at Warehouse is located on one of the old warehouses in the Wynwood region. Martin Margulies was a pioneer among Miami col-

A Margulies Collection at Warehouse fica em um dos antigos armazéns da área de Wynwood. Martin Margulies foi pioneiro entre os colecionadores de Miami ao abrir seu acervo privado e reforçar a imagem da cidade como destino de arte. Sua galeria esteve fechada durante o verão deste ano, mas reabre em 25 de outubro com uma nova exposição sobre pop art. Entre as obras, todas do acervo particular do colecionador, estão trabalhos pouco vistos de Jaspers Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist e Andy Warhol. A galeria vai exibir também uma instalação do artista alemão Olaf Metzel e outra do brasileiro Ernesto Neto, “É o bicho!”, que esteve na Bienal de Veneza. Ao norte de Wynwood, o Miami Design District está se tornando mais um polo de arte moderna e contemporânea. lectors to open his private collection and strengthen the image of the city as an art destination. His gallery was closed for Summer this year, but reopens October 25 with a new pop art exhibit. Among the works, all from the collector’s private collection, are little seen works by Jaspers Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol. The gallery will also showcase an installation by German artist Olaf Metzel and another by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto, “É o bicho!”, which was exhibited in the Venice Biennale. North of Wynwood, Miami Design District is becoming an additional hub of modern and contemporary art. Another of the most important private collections of the city, that of Cuban couple Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, is one of its main attractions. Like the Margulies collection, the de la Cruz Collection of Contemporary Art annually rotates the pieces exhibited in the three floors of the Design District building. The new exhibit is always inaugurated on the eve of Art Basel. This year, besides the private collection exhibits, there is at least one great new opening a few days before the fair. On December 1st, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) inaugurates its new Design District address. ICA moved from the almost centenary Moore Building, in the same region, to become a neighbor of the de la Cruz Collection, on

At the opening of its new home, ICA will present an installation of controversial British artist Chris Ofili, as well as the exhibit “The everywhere studio”, with one hundred works by 50 artists of the last five decades, including Roy Lichtenstein, Bruce Nauman and Yves Klein. With its home design shops and art galleries, the region north of Wynwood has been transformed into a luxury consumers’ hub. Currently, Miami Design District has jewelers like Bulgari, Cartier and Harry Winston and international fashion maisons like Hermès, Dior, Givenchy,Valentino and Louis Vuitton. The renovation works continue, and new shops and restaurants are expected to open soon, including a branch of the scrumptious L’Atelier, star-winning French chef Joël Robuchon’s new Miami restaurant. Until December of this year, Design District will promote guided tours to works of art in open spaces. In Downtown Miami, south of Design District and Wynwood, the mark of artistic update is Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), opened three years ago. Boasting a beautiful sustainable project by the award-winning Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, installed in a park and with a view to Biscayne Bay and the harbor, the museum showcases its collection of Latin American modern and contemporary art in temporary exhibits. Science was inaugurated in May of this year. To soothe tired eyes at the end of a day dedicated to the visual arts, take down a suggestion: go down to the south end of South Beach. There you’ll find South Pointe Park, at the entrance of Biscayne Bay. Renovated in 2009, it’s one of the most pleasant spots of this new chic and smart Miami, with varied landscaping, open view to the Atlantic Ocean and the harbor; and it wouldn’t be completed without the open air contemporary art sculptures. Don’t miss “Lighthouse”, a kind of modern beacon created by German artist Tobias Rehberger. Afterwards, a good option is to watch the sunset at one of the tables of the open air local branch of Smith & Wollensky. Renowned for its meat and seafood, it’s one of the best Miami restaurants. Reserve an open air table to see the sun setting against the harbor background. The little boat, I mean, the ocean liner sails, as late afternoon falls.

The book collects works produced by the artist between 2013 and 2016. Katherine became famous for her extremely colorful paintings of models from fashion magazines and, recently, for works arising from her imagination.

Instalada no número 20 da rue d’Hauteville, no vibrante 10ème arrondissement, a Cinabre tem a simplicidade da fachada azul destacando seu interior: a boutique vende gravatas slim – com o verso marcado por pespontos largos e vermelhos –, gravatas borboletas com detalhes em carmim, moedeiros e echarpes coloridos. O ambiente mistura móveis antigos e pôster de ficção científica, robôs e outras evidências das inspirações de Alexandre Chapellier, franco-sueco fundador da marca Cinabre. O tom vermelho presente em todos os produtos dá nome à grife (vem do “cinnabar”, um sulfito de mercúrio) e virou uma marca registrada – assim como as solas vermelhas de um sapato Louboutin. A marca, fundada em 2011, ganhou o gosto dos iniciados em moda com propostas inovadoras. Recentemente, chamou a atenção quando apresentou em sua rede social um lote devidamente personalizado, enviado ao presidente francês Emmanuel Macron. Ele estava no comando da marca Jean Patou haute Couture nos anos 1960 e, no começo dos anos 1970, deu início às coleções ready to wear na Balenciaga. Seu melhor conselho foi provavelmente me encorajar a mudar as regras. Afinal, gravatas e gravatas borboletas são geralmente conservadoras e padronizadas. You worked in finance and were a headhunter for entrepreneurs. Why did you create a tie brand? After five years managing an investment fund, I wanted to start my own business and was looking for something creative. I was always in love with fashion and vintage clothes. I spent more than a year working with haute-couture designer Michel Goma and visited many ateliers around France. What was the best advice you received from Michel Goma? I was very lucky to meet him, because Michel is incredibly talented. He was at the helm of Jean Patou haute-couture brand in the 1960s and, in the beginning of the 1970s, started Balenciaga’s ready to wear collections. His best advice was probably to encourage me to change the rules. After all, ties and bow ties are usually conservative and standardized. I wanted to use fabrics and prints that had never been considered before in this kind of product, but making them, nevertheless, “wearable”. What’s your style tip for those who want to add a little more color to their look? A good accessory can make a great difference in the look and define your personal style. If we’re speaking of ties, most conservative men wear blue. If you wish to continue wearing blue, you can change the classic, shiny silk for something more modern, like flannel or textured, shineless silk. If you want to add more color, you can start using darker colors, which are easier to combine, like burgundy or khaki.

om quase 30 anos de carreira, o arquiteto Arthur Casas traz no currículo inúmeras obras espalhadas por cidades como São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Nova York, Paris e Buenos Aires. Muitas delas, principalmente as mais recentes, levam em conta soluções sustentáveis. Opção urgente e necessária, aliás, que a equipe de seu escritório, o renomado Studio Arthur Casas, vem adotando com frequência. “Mas depende mesmo é da vontade do cliente”, diz o arquiteto. A casa construída em uma propriedade de cerca de 6 mil m², em Itu, no interior de São Paulo, é um bom exemplo da implementação desse conceito. “Acredito que hoje a sustentabilidade na arquitetura esteja mais centrada na procura por diminuir o tempo e os impactos que uma obra acarreta no meio ambiente. Por isso, acredito que precisamos mudar urgentemente o sistema construtivo”, avisa. Nesse lar de um casal com filhos, a integração com a paisagem do entorno chama a atenção e resulta em uma belíssima construção minimalista com influência contemporânea revestida de elementos naturais. Decididos em morar em um lugar sustentável, foram os próprios “donos da casa” que propuseram utilizar a estrutura metálica, os revestimentos certificados com procedência de manejo sustentável e o sistema de captação e reciclagem de água da chuva. A construção de 760 m² conta com sistema de placas de energia solar, de ventilação cruzada, que evita o uso do ar condicionado, e sistema de compostagem de lixo orgânico. “O cliente também optou pelo uso de materiais de construção encontrados na própria região, como a madeira de cumaru, e o acabamento com pedra e tijolo”, diz Casas.

// With a career spanning almost 30 years, architect Arthur Casas has on his CV numerous constructions scattered around cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Paris and Buenos Aires. Many of them, especially the more recent ones, take into consideration sustainable solutions. An urgent and necessary option, moreover, that his office’s team – the renowned Studio Arthur Casas – has been frequently adopting. “But it all depends on what the client wants,” says the architect. The house built in a property of a little over 172 thousand square ft. in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo state, is a good example of the implementation of the concept. “I believe that sustainability in architecture is currently more centered on the search to shorten the time and impacts a construction brings to the environment. That’s why I believe we must urgently change the construction system,” he warns. In this home for a couple with children, integration with the surrounding landscape is outstanding and results in a gorgeous minimalist construction with contemporary influence, clad with natural elements. Having decided to live in a sustainable place, it was the “proprietors” themselves who proposed to use the metallic structure, the sustainable handling origin-certified coating and a system for capture and recycling of rainwater. The 1,180 square ft. construction has a solar energy system, cross ventilation, which avoids the use of AC, and organic waste composting system. “The client also opted for the use of construction materials found in the region, like cumaru wood and rock and brick finishing,” says Casas. The L-shaped house is made up of two rectangular blocks. On the ground floor of the main part are the children’s’ rooms and a big living room that stretches all the way to the terrace. Above it are the

couple’s suite and the gym. On the ground floor of the other part are the common and service wings. The architectural project reinforces the fluidity between rooms and, the most important aspect, integration with the landscape. A delicate fusion seems to emanate between the house and the surrounding nature. In many moments, the house seems to merge with the lake right in front of it, or with the old Ipê tree incorporated into the architecture, overlaid by the stairs leading to the first floor. On one side, the stone floor of the dining room stretches towards the terrace. On the other, the wooden living room extends to the pool deck. The architect suggested installing retractable glass in the corridors and rooms, with a view to the external area, a solution creating a unique atmosphere that brings the landscape, once and for all, into the construction. “What inspires me whenever I start a new work is the landscape and climate conditions in the place where the project will be implemented,” says Casas. The ecofriendly appeal is crowned by the choice of earthy tones that mix in with the arid context and by the great wooden deck surrounding the house, where a swimming lane was installed. The interior design prioritized coziness, with pieces by Sérgio Rodrigues and Jorge Zalszupin, that cohabit harmoniously with the “Archipelago” set of tables designed by Arthur Casas.

Em formato de “L”, a casa é composta por dois blocos retangulares. No térreo da parte principal está o quarto das crianças e a grande sala de estar que termina no terraço. Acima, ficam a suíte do casal e a academia. No térreo do outro volume, estão as alas comum e de serviço. O projeto arquitetônico reforça a fluidez entre os cômodos e, o principal, a integração com a paisagem. Parece haver uma fusão delicada e natural entre a casa e a natureza dos arredores. Em vários momentos tem-se a ideia de que a casa se funde com o pequeno lago que fica logo à frente, ou com o antigo ipê incorporado à arquitetura, sobreposto pela escada que dá acesso ao primeiro pavimento. De um lado, o piso em pedra da sala de jantar segue em direção ao terraço. Do outro, a sala de estar em madeira estende-se até o deck da piscina. O arquiteto propôs instalar vidros retráteis nos corredores e salas, com vista para a área externa, saída que cria uma atmosfera única trazendo de vez a paisagem para dentro da construção. “O que me inspira sempre que começo um novo trabalho é a paisagem e as condições de clima do local onde o projeto será implantado”, conta Casas. O apelo ecofriendly é coroado pela escolha de tons terrosos que se mesclam ao contexto árido e por um grande deck de madeira ao redor da casa, onde foi instalada uma raia de natação. O design de interiores priorizou o aconchego com peças de Sérgio Rodrigues e Jorge Zalszupin, que convivem harmoniosamente com o conjunto de mesas “Arquipélago”, desenhado por Arthur Casas.

// "If you work and are fair, one day you’ll get there.” The phrase from a Marcelo D2 song is quoted by Thiago Soares, a Principal of the London Royal Ballet since 2006, to explain his successful career. Like the rapper, Thiago was born in Rio and started his relationship with music through hip hop. But that’s where the similarities between them end. Thiago went from hip hop to classical music and moved from Rio de Janeiro to London, where he has been living for 16 years. “I was about nine and all my friends who danced hip hop were noticed,” says the ballet dancer who grew up in São Gonçalo, in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. “I wanted to be like those guys and be at the center of attention.” At 36, the first and only Brazilian to win the gold medal of the Bolshoi Ballet International Competition, one of the world’s most important contests, lived up to

A frase de uma música de Marcelo D2 é citada por Thiago Soares, primeiro bailarino do Royal Ballet de Londres desde 2006, para explicar a carreira bem-sucedida. Assim como o rapper, Thiago é carioca e iniciou sua relação com a música através do hip hop. Mas as semelhanças entre os dois terminam aí. Thiago foi do hip hop para a música clássica e trocou o Rio de Janeiro por Londres, onde vive há 16 anos. “Eu tinha uns nove anos e todos os meus amigos que dançavam hip hop ganhavam atenção", conta o bailarino, que cresceu em São Gonçalo, na periferia do Rio de Janeiro. “Eu queria ser que nem aqueles caras e estar no centro das atenções.” Aos 36 anos, o primeiro e único brasileiro a conquistar a medalha de ouro do

Achava que era um herói, o melhor, e acabei sendo”, conta, rindo. “Às vezes, ainda tento reproduzir aquela sensação.” Centrado e disciplinado como todo bom bailarino, Thiago afirma ter vontade de, no futuro, construir uma família e ter filhos, naquilo que chama “projeto vida”. Por enquanto, porém, o “pacto que tem com a dança” fala mais alto. “Quando seu ofício te dá algo e também o define, você deve ser generoso com ele e honrar essa oportunidade”, diz o carioca, que estará de volta ao Brasil no fim do ano, com novas apresentações.

I thought I was a hero, the best, and that’s what I ended up becoming,” he says laughing. “I sometimes still try to reproduce that feeling.” Focused and disciplined like every good ballet dancer, Thiago affirms he wants, in the future, to build a family and have kids, in what he refers to as his “life project”. Meanwhile, however, the “pact he made with dancing” speaks louder. “When your craft gives you something and also defines you, you must be generous to it and honor the opportunity,” says the Rio-born dancer, who will be back in Brazil later this year for new presentations.

Abro a porta – a maçaneta fica pouco abaixo da cintura, de tão baixo que o carro é –, sento e começo a me encaixar frente ao volante. Demoro algum tempo para encontrar a posição perfeita, não por falha da ergonomia, mas porque são inúmeras possibilidades de ajustes. Até o extensor do assento, que amplia o apoio para as coxas, é elétrico. Me sinto como se estivesse vestido em um terno feito sob medida. À minha frente, o típico painel de Porsche traz cinco mostradores, com o conta-giros no centro, em destaque. Seu ponteiro também é verde-limão. Essa é a versão Turbo S E-Hybrid, que assume o posto de topo de linha da gama Panamera nesta segunda geração. Nela, o 4.0 V8 biturbo de 550 cavalos de potência não está sozinho. Um propulsor elétrico cumpre a função de movimentar o carro sem emitir poluentes, mas também se junta ao motor a gasolina para alcançar 680 cavalos de potência e 86 kgfm de torque. Números de desempenho e consumo beiram a bipolaridade: zero a 100 km/h em 3,4 segundos, máxima de 310 km/h e consumo combinado (estrada e cidade) de 34,5 km/l. Pouco tempo atrás, era preciso escolher entre desempenho ou consumo. Em um híbrido de alta performance, cólera e paz andam juntas. Giro a chave na ignição à minha esquerda e me sinto como piloto de avião, tal é a quantidade de informações apresentadas. O painel traz as condições do sistema híbrido, como nível da bateria e autonomia no modo elétrico. À direita, uma tela de 12,3 polegadas tremendamente nítida amplia a visão do GPS, detalha o funcionamento do sistema híbrido e faz até o básico, que é mostrar a carinha do artista que está cantando na rádio ou no celular.

It takes me some time to find the perfect position, not from lack of ergonomics, but because there are numerous possibilities of adjustments. Even the seat extender, which increases thigh support, is electrical. I feel as if I were dressed in a custom-made suit. In front of me, the typical Porsche panel exhibits five displays, with the rev-counter at the center, in highlight. Its hands are also lime green. This is the Turbo S E-Hybrid version, which assumes the top of line post of the second generation Panamera range. In it, the 4.0 V8 550 hp twin-turbo engine is not alone. An electric motor helps to move the car along without emission of pollutants, but it also joins up with the gas engine to reach 680 hp of potency and 86 kgfm of torque. Performance and consumption numbers are almost bipolar: zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, maximum speed of 310 km/h and combined consumption (country and city) of 34.5 km/l. A while back, the choice was between performance and consumption. In a high-performance hybrid, rage and repose ride together. I turn the ignition key to my left and feel like an airplane pilot, given the amount of information presented. The panel brings the conditions of the hybrid system, like battery level and autonomy in the electric mode. To the right, a very sharp 12.3” screen augments the image of the GPS, details the functioning of the hybrid system and even gets down to basics, showing the face of the artist who is singing on the radio or mobile phone.

Basta uma pisada mais forte no acelerador para o motor elétrico sair de cena. Mas aqui é diferente. Ao fim de quatro voltas, fica claro que o habitat natural do Panamera híbrido não é uma pista, mas, sim, cruzar as Autobahns da Alemanha a 250 km/h, tranquilamente. Mais do que um automóvel esportivo e luxuoso, o Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid vira referência em como atender demandas ambientais sem perder esportividade e prazer ao volante.

Buttons are not amiss on the steering wheel of Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. But ignore them. The only one that matters is the driving mode selector. There are four options: Hybrid Auto, Sport, Sport Plus and E-Power. I select the last one and leave Villa Eyrie Resort on my way to Island Motorsports Circuit, both in Vancouver, Canada. Hybrids are usually sensitive. A light overstep on the gas and the electric motor is history. But here it’s different. You don’t need to “blow” the pedal for this five meter-long sedan to gain speed without the aid of the combustion engine. According to the manufacturers, the maximum speed using the electric mode only is 140 km/h. On the racing circuit, it’s a different story. The selector on the steering wheel is moved to Sport, when the V8 assumes as protagonist and the electric motor serves as an extra force. The easygoing electric vehicle becomes a ferocious sports car. Ramming the gas on the straight, it accelerates violently and you start to feel pain in your eyes, chest and butterflies in your stomach. On the curves, the sharp steering wheel allows you to point the front of the car in the right direction, but you can clearly notice the effort made by the structure in order to hold the elevated 2,310 kg of the automobile. At the end of four laps, it becomes clear that the natural habitat of the Panamera hybrid is not a racing circuit, but calmly cruising Germany’s Autobahns at 250 km/h. More than a luxury sports vehicle, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid becomes a reference in how to cater to environmental demands without losing sports qualities and pleasure behind the steering wheel.

Todas essas belezas e sensações que parecem ter saído de um documentário da Discovery Channel compõem a experiência cotidiana de um golfista, que passeia por paraísos para fazer uma esfera branca voar ou rolar por distâncias que vão de poucos centímetros a centenas de metros. Para isso acontecer, o jogador precisa de um palco muito especial – e enorme, caro e difícil de ser construído, cuja conta final atinge

For this to happen, the player needs a very special stage – huge, expensive and very hard to build, its final bill coming in at millions of dollars. This is where the golf course architect enters the picture, uniting all the beauty nature has to offer with the angulations that will defy the skill of golf players.

The architect has some guidelines. An official golf course is made up of 18 stretches called “holes”, each one with an extension of between 218 and 546 yards. Each hole is composed of a tee off, a fairway and a green, where the flag is – at the green stands the small hole where the player will finally “pocket” the ball in order to pass on to the next hole. These few specifications are about all that limits architects. And their liberties are so grand to the point of making them more like artists. “The best way of building a top-level course is taking into consideration the unique aspects of the place where it’ll be built. Can you by any chance imagine an artist always painting the same picture?,” asks Tom Fazio, one of the greatest active designers and author of wonders such as the desert-like The Estancia Club, in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Magnolia, at Callawassie Island Club, South Carolina, where the course blends in with the forest. Champ Tom Watson, one of the greatest golfers of all time, defines a course design as “a way to think about the game’s possibilities”. It’s a good definition. Anyway, can the lake right in front be surpassed by a single shot? Or should I hit the ball so as to humbly land before the lake, so that I can overcome the water obstacle with a second shot? And from strategy to strategy, between failures and successes, challenges succeed each other, involving the player mentally and emotionally. The designer sees everything: the positions of the lakes, the places for the bunkers, the meandering game fairways, all is done not only to fill the golf player with striking beauty, but also to intimidate him psychologically and prevent his best score. vários milhões de dólares. É nesse momento que surge o arquiteto de campos de golfe, unindo toda a beleza que a natureza oferece com as angulações que desafiarão as habilidades dos golfistas. O arquiteto tem algumas diretrizes. O campo de golfe oficial precisa ter 18 percursos, chamados de “buracos”, cada qual medindo entre 200 e 500 metros de extensão. Cada buraco é composto pela área de saída (tee off), a raia (fairway) e a área de chegada (green), onde está a bandeira – no green está o pequeno buraco onde o jogador finalmente embocará a bola, para passar ao buraco seguinte. Nessas poucas especificações terminam as limitações dos arquitetos. E suas liberdades são tantas que os aproximam dos artistas. “A melhor maneira de fazer um campo de excelência é levar em conta os aspectos únicos do lugar onde ele será construído. Você, por acaso, imagina um artista pintando sempre a mesma tela?”, nos pergunta Tom Fazio, um dos grandes designers em atividade, e autor de maravilhas, como o desértico The Estancia Club, em Scottsdale, no Arizona, e o Magnolia, no Callawassie Island Club, na Carolina do Sul, onde o campo mescla-se com a floresta. O campeão Tom Watson, um dos maiores golfistas de todos os tempos, define o desenho do campo como “uma forma de pensar as possibilidades de jogo”. É uma boa definição. Afinal, o lago que se exibe à frente pode ser ultrapassado com apenas uma tacada? Ou bato a bola para pousar antes do lago, humildemente, para depois tentar vencer o obstáculo de água com a segunda tacada? E de estratégia em estratégia, entre erros e acertos, os desafios vão se sucedendo e envolvendo o jogador, mental e emocionalmente. Nada escapa ao designer: todas as posições dos lagos, os lugares das bancas de areia, as sinuosidades das raias de jogo, tudo é feito não apenas para encher os olhos do golfista com belezas estonteantes, mas para também intimidá-lo psico-

design legend, sums up the equation: “Golf is a silent battle where the architect acts as defender against the golfer attacking the course”. Dan Blankenship, with a strong role in Brazil, contributed to the sport in the country with many unique courses. One of them is Terravista Golf Course, built over the Trancoso cliffs. “In this course I could elevate to the maximum two values that I apply in my designs: game challenges and extreme beauty in the same environment, leading the golfer to a clash between his reason and emotion,” sums up the architect. But a golf course designed by a great artist also has an unsuspected subtlety. Besides the more obvious obstacles, like the bunkers and the lakes, the design generates an optical illusion with its outlines full of ups and downs, declivities to the right and to the left, leading, for example, the golfer to aim wrong, or to miss the exact distance between bunker and beginning of green. Another peculiarity of this sport is the perfect interaction between its courses and clubhouses, which receive, in terms of architecture and design, the same high level treatment provided to the playing areas. Traditionally the first and last holes (1 and 18) have its greens located next to the clubhouse, for other golfers and guests to appreciate them; and also for the golfer to be able to see, while playing the last hole, the shelter of the refuge that awaits him.

Outra peculiaridade desse esporte é a perfeita interação entre os campos e suas sedes, as quais recebem, em termos de arquitetura e design, o mesmo tratamento de alto nível que foi dispensado às áreas de jogo. Tradicionalmente, o primeiro e o último buracos (1 e 18) têm seus greens colocados próximos à sede, para outros golfistas e convidados apreciarem; e também para o golfista já avistar, enquanto joga o último buraco, o aconchego do refúgio que o aguarda.

“Publicado por George Orwell em 1949, o livro "1984" é um clássico que posso ler várias vezes. A figura do Big Brother criada pelo autor britânico é um fantasma que perseguiu minha imaginação por muitos anos. A ideia de um vulto supernatural e tecnológico observando meus passos, forçando-me a ser parte de um clã político que me oprime e obrigando-me a viver num mundo onde sou compelido a ser calado... só poderia sair de uma obra de Orwell. Mas nunca imaginei que, com a revolução da internet, eu estaria vivendo uma espécie de renascimento das ideias do meu antigo herói-escritor. Me lembro quando o Facebook começou a entrar na moda. Amigos próximos estavam animados em compartilhar imagens do cotidiano, e eu, reticente, me opus por bastante tempo.
