CONCEPT STATEMENT Nubians had suffered a lot during their journey of relocation through generations. Such actions lead to the beginning of losing the identity and the sense of belonging within the Nubians population especially within the younger generation. Younger generation are turning their back from agriculture which used to be the backbone of Nubian household income to work in more profitable jobs. So at first my concept was driven from the Nubian triangle to serve as a symbol of centralization. The main plaza in the center will serve as nucleus between different zones & it will be the focal point of the project as it will be used as an open space for the community to gather and learn more about modern agriculture techniques. So by integrating the community and targeting the younger ones, we will have a generation that is aware about his identity and culture integrated within modern ideologies.

VERTICAL FARMING STUDIES

1 How Vertical Farming Works in the Project

Vertical farming is the production of vegetables, fruits or anything that could be farmed in vertical stacked layers. The modern use of vertical farming is by farming indoor in a controlled environment agriculture technology, where all factors can be managed. Such facilities uses LED light and environmental control systems. Softwares can make sure that all the vegetable and fruits get the equal amount of light, water and nutrients. As it is grown in a controlled environment so the need for herbicides and pesticides are not necessary. To hit high levels of production, growth conditions in vertical farms must be continuously optimized. Sensors and data must be used to effectively track variables such as climate, nutrient composition and light levels. Climate is characterized by a combination of air temperature, humidity and (CO2) levels. Using smart sensors that can monitor these variables will ensure that vertical farms produce yields that greatly exceed those of conventional farms. Here is some common sensors used in vertical farms:

Steel Flooring is used as it has high strength to weight ratio which means it has high strength per unit mass so it will be efficient and light weight to build such structure of high spans using steel. Moreover Steel is easily fabricated and could be assembled on site which saves time and money. Furthermore, systems such as sensors, irrigation, fire systems and ventilation could be easily integrated within the structure which is beneficial to the whole system.

1 Fruits & Vegetables Marketplace

2 Spaces of Interaction with the Community

Such stores will secure a stable source of income to the project in which fruits and vegetables grown in the farmlands and vertical farming facility will be sold to the locals. Moreover, there is extra stores for the locals that have nearby farmlands to rent it for a monthly fee in which it will help both parties to sustain a local marketplace for Nubians in which they could find sustainable products. By allowing such actions in the projects, the marketplace will act as hub for farmers that grow their products sustainably in sell it in one place.

ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY Workshops & Bazars The addition of the pottery workshops in the project was due to many locals depend on selling pottery and depend on it as their main source of income. So by adding a place where locals could sell and learn more about pottery skills was a main objective to maintain during the design phase to make the project more integrating with locals.

Cafes & Restaurants The cafes & restaurants zone help serve the incoming influx of visitors to the center. All the cafes & restaurants will be integrated with the main street to increase the exposure of all shops to visitors. All those working there will be locals as there is an expansive people of previous expertise of working as cafe servants in Souq El-Selah street.

21 22

Amphitheater The amphitheater will act as a major hub for local artists and local bands to make small concerts that could attract tourist’s and visitor’s attention. As a result the flow of visitors will increase substantially which will help with making the project an icon in the historical area of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar.

Exhibition The local exhibition will act as a platform for local artists, craftsmen, carpet and rug producers to show and preview their work to the public and tourists visiting the site. Such small spot will help local talents economically to survive and flourish their talents exponentially.

SUSTAINABLE APPROACHES Passive Sustainable Design

Sun orientation & climate data is well considered in the project. All the window placement & operation are used to best manage daylighting & natural ventilation which in turn reduces the need for energy. All exterior walls is being 25 cm to help with the passive approach.

Active Sustainable Design

Active design strategies is an important part of making the project sustainable. By implementing highly effective HVAC, electrical, plumbing & creating a well-designed building envelope with suitable insulation technique can make the building really efficient in its energy demands.

Local Building Materials

All materials used is local materials that could be sourced in the greater Cairo region. The wood used in the fabrication of doors & windows is fabricated in nearby local workshops located in El-Darb El-Ahmar to reduce the cost of transportation & to benefit the local community.

23 24

Waste Management

Waste is disposed and transfered by small local independent recyclers to Manshyt Nasr which is nearby El-Darb El-Ahmar for recycling. Such disposal will ensure that the waste is well treated and making use of it instead of just throwing it away.

Reducing Vehicle Traffic

All the boundaries near the project is car-free zone. Such approach is user friendly for the locals & kids living near the historic area. By reducing cars in the area air, noise & traffic will reduce pollution. Such act will make people walk & use sustainable means of transport more frequently.

Native Landscaping

By using local vegetation as a landscaping mean, it will have a huge impact as those local plantations is well suited to the local weather & it restores natural habitat in the area. Being local makes it less expensive & on the long run will save up money as it uses less water to plant.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

The first base geometrical design of the units that will help with the development of the design.

The offices unit will be transformed by subtracting a portion of its volume in north facade to help with the design being more aesthetic

The recreational unit will be offset ed to add an outdoor area for the visitors. The offices unit will be subtracted from the edges to add more outdoor ares for the workers.

Modifying of units according to needs, function and form to comply with the vision of the design. Terraces is added to help with the interaction of coworkers and for better ventilation of the units.

Addition of curtain walls according to the facades facing no or a little direct sunlight throughout the day to reduce the use of the energy needed for cooling in all buildings.

2ND & 3RD TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN These floors will contain multiple and small offices with different gross areas to help sustain small scale business and entrepreneurs. Small terraces are available for some offices to enhance the working environment in the offices and to allow for more natural ventilation. Such privileged offices will come at a higher prices compared to those less privileged offices.

6TH & 7TH TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN These floors will be for high end business and large scale ones. The whole floor could be owned if the owner needs to or the floor could be split twice between two large offices that need larger gross areas for their needs and requirements. Every end of the floor will have a huge terrace that will accompany all the workers working for a better working environment, and to increase social connections between coworkers.

4TH & 5TH TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN These floors will contain medium scale business that could afford the price of larger gross area offices. Owners who will own in such floors will have the option to buy multiple offices and open them all together for the desired requires gross area needed by the owner. As those floors is more for the premium owners, more leisure & open areas are designed for more quality environment.

BASEMENT FLOOR PLAN The Basement floor will be the parking lot for the employees working in the business park. It will combine between two different structures systems: The main structure which will be consisted of RC frames, while the remaining underground area will be supported by RC flat slabs to make more space for cars. The entrance & exit of the parking will be from different areas to reduce traffic.
