MY RO L E

REGIONAL CONTEXT LOCATION Cairo, Egypt is located on the River Nile and has unparalleled historical value. With an estimated current metropolitan population of 17.285 million people, Cairo is also one of the most populated cities in the world. Cairo’s large population is combined with a lack of open space. In the mid-1990s Cairo had one of the lowest ratios of green space per inhabitant in the world; at only one square meter per resident it fell far below the World Health Organization’s recommended eight square meters per person. The construction of Al-Azhar Park helped to alleviate Cairo’s thirst for open space but there still is tremendous demand for additional open space. The project site is located approximately 28 km east of downtown Cairo in an area of rapid new development to be known as New Cairo. NEW CAIRO REGION City planners have directed new growth to an area east of downtown. Emaar’s 885 acre site is located within the area the government is focusing growth. The project site is comprised of relatively flat, low lying land. An ancient Wadi (desert drainage) system flows through the project site in a northerly direction.
