What if Someday was today?

What choices would you make if your life changed in an instant? Explore forgiveness, letting go and redemption this fall with New York Times bestselling author Lisa Genova’s latest novel Every Note Played, this year’s selection for the library’s One Book, One Village community read.

With the same striking insight as her previous titles, which include Inside the O’Briens, Left Neglected, Love Anthony and Still Alice, Every Note Played is beautifully informed by a rich understanding of classical music and reminds us of how our choices influence our careers, relationships, and ultimately, how we have lived our life.

One Book, One Village, which is now in its fifth year, invites the community to read the same book at the same time and share experiences through related programs and discussions with family, friends, neighbors and community members. It will culminate with a visit by the author on Thursday, October 18 at Forest View Auditorium. Registration opens September 1 for Arlington Heights cardholders.

In recognition of the musical elements in Every Note Played, the library invites residents to enjoy and take part in The Piano Project, a public outdoor display that reinvents pianos with original artwork and puts them on display throughout the community from September 12 to October 12.

Copies of Every Note Played are now available for checkout in the library’s Marketplace, Senior Center, on the bookmobile and at ahml.info as an eBook or eAudiobook for download with CloudLibrary. Visit ahml.info/onebook for more information.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

When asked this question as a little kid, I had a different answer every day. I aspired to be a famous singer, a bookish lawyer and a wand-wielding wizard all before the age of seven. But as I grew older this question carried more and more weight, and I realized that I would need to actually choose a path to pursue.

Now at the beginning of the school year, teens are asked this question with great frequency by their parents, teachers, peers and even their friendly neighborhood teen librarians. For many teens, answering this question requires the daunting task of figuring out what they’d like to major in or what college to attend. Of course, that also means they will need to prepare for tests like the SAT and ACT, and don’t forget the Common App or filling out a FAFSA. Needless to say, there’s a lot to consider.

But teens (and parents) need not fear, as there are plenty of resources at the library to help figure out the path to college!

Our College Knowledge series of programming is designed to help inform teens and their families about their post-high school options. This month, teens can attend programs to get an inside look into the admissions process, receive tips on writing their best college essay and more on page 12. We’re excited to also offer college programs in Spanish starting with our La Universidad a tu Alcance program on September 25.

Keep an eye out for College Knowledge programs later in the fall to attend practice exam sessions, receive help filling out a FAFSA and to plan for students with learning differences.

Bookmobile delivers books and more for customer on the go Neither rain, snow nor heat can get in the way of Arlington Heights resident Al Stevenson and his bike.

Stevenson rides to Community Consolidated School District 15’s Carl Sandburg Junior High where he teaches science. He also wheels around town running errands, including stops at the library’s bookmobile, which Stevenson visits like clockwork, every other Tuesday afternoon when it parks within a few blocks of his home.

“The bookmobile has been an amazing service for me because I ride my bike to work, and it really has transformed my life,” Stevenson said.

“Over the past year, I have used the bookmobile to access books, movies and CDs. I have become an avid reader of fantasy and mystery books. I even started an Agatha Christie book club with my mom in New York due to the bookmobile service, as we each reserve the next book in Christie’s collection with our local libraries. This is all due to the easy access to the bookmobile as it stops at Carefree Park by my home, so it is convenient to reserve and return items.”

FANCON RETURNS FOR ITS BIGGEST YEAR YET! The library celebrated its third annual FanCon this summer with more than 900 residents of all ages stopping by the library for its comic book and pop culture convention.

Young Mya Kok (pictured) and her brother Elliot got into character early. After picking up a FanCon mask at the library, they both wore them around the house, pretending to be superheroes, said Maya’s father, Arthur.

“Seeing lots of people in the community participating, it felt like you’re part of something,” said Arthur. “Certainly it was fun for them to see other kids in costume, and the adults dressed up, so that really [made you think], ‘wow this is something special.’ ” FanCon gave fans an opportunity to see their favorite characters, compete in a Super Smash Bros. tournament, meet best-selling author and illustrator Jeffrey Brown, attend lightsaber training sessions and more.

When doctors diagnosed 19-year-old rock star Jason Becker with Lou Gehrig’s disease, they said he would never make music again and would not live to see his 25th birthday. Remembering Martin W. Reinhart Martin W. Reinhart was an architect and teacher, remembered fondly for his love of knowledge and contributions to the library, so it’s fitting that a recently commissioned painting in his honor features a portrait of Reinhart in one of its illustrated windows.

“Chicago Cityscape” was created by painter Ruxandra Darie and was commissioned for the library thanks to generous donations from Reinhart’s family, friends and ESL students. When Reinhart’s sister Karen Neswold, her husband Dick, and Reinhart’s niece Sue McCosley stopped by the to view the painting for the first time, they described Reinhart as someone who enjoyed travelling the world, loved artwork and stayed active in the Norwegian community in Chicago.

“With all his travelling and all his reading, he could talk about any subject. He just ate it all up,” said Karen, who recalled how he could look at any building in Chicago and know the history of it. The family recognized how fitting it was that Reinhart would begin his second career at the library.

Reinhart studied city planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked at Perkins Will, an architecture firm in Chicago. He continued to work as a renowned Chicago architect from 1969 to 2004. Upon retirement in 2004, he began volunteering as a tutor for the Read to Learn Program in the library’s ESL/ Literacy Office. In 2010, he began working part-time as an ESL Literacy Assistant.

Stop by the ESL/Literacy Office on the library’s second floor to see the “Chicago Cityscape” painting in memory of Martin W. Reinhart.

When your bookshelves are bulging and you’d like to find a new home for your books, DVDs and CDs, consider donating those gently used items to the Friends of the Library. Bring your items to the donation area across from the drive-up window, and someone can help you unload your car. The Friends of the Library sell donated items to fund the programs you love, like One Book, One Village, Sunday Musicales, artwork and more.
