SUMMER 2025 TABLE OF CONTENTS

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Get ready for an unforgettable summer at the Arlington Heights Park District! There is so much fun to be had and on behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners, we are excited to see so many of you at our pools, special events, playgrounds and so much more!

You may have noticed that our cover highlights the District’s 100th Anniversary. On June 9, 2025, AHPD will proudly mark a century of service to the community. To celebrate, we have an exciting year of events planned for you and your family and we invite you to help us kick off this milestone at Picnic in the Park on June 13. For a sneak peek about the anniversary, check out pages 6-7 with more details to come as we approach the summer. We look forward to continuing our growth and adaptability alongside the community, providing exceptional recreational opportunities for years to come.

The Park Board of Commissioners is excited to share Recreation Park updates and another capital project update with you:

Recreation Park

• Phase 1 of the outdoor improvements at Recreation Park is expected to be completed by summer. Significant progress was made during the fall and we are excited to see this phase finished as it marks the beginning of several exciting upgrades to the park. Stay tuned for grand opening details!

• Updated concept plans are now available on our website for Recreation Park community center, bathhouse and pool. We would like to thank our residents, staff and architects for their contributions to this project. Construction is expected to begin in late summer/early fall. Watch our website as the project progresses!

Centennial Park

We are pleased to share that in December, Governor Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced that AHPD has been awarded a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant for a major revitalization project at Centennial Park. The initiative will enhance the park with the following upgrades:

• Updated fishing pier and overlook

• A new playground

• New outdoor fitness equipment

• A new shelter

• New game tables

• Improved ballfields

• Enhanced pathways and seating areas

Thank you to Governor Pritzker, our legislators, the IDNR and our residents for their efforts in helping to secure this critical funding! This marks AHPD's third OSLAD grant in the past three years, bringing the total funding to over $1.5 million for our community.

The summer at AHPD is filled with a wide range of special events and programs! A Weekend of Fun returns in August with Irish Fest, Heritage Fest and BBQ, Bands and Brews as well as our series of free, pop-up events throughout the summer, Plan to Play Every Day. You can find information about these and more special events on the upcoming pages.

As always, we look forward to seeing you in the parks, on the golf courses, in the tennis clubs, recreation centers, museum, playgrounds and ball fields….where the fun happens in Arlington Heights!

Our Park District Commissioners

The Arlington Heights Park District is governed by a Board of elected officials. The Board meets on Tuesdays at the Administration Center. Meetings begin at 6:30PM. Residents are able to attend. Visit ahpd.org for the board meeting schedule.

First Time Registering?

Park District staff are here to help! Park District residents must come, in person, to either Administration Center, Camelot, Pioneer Community Centers or the Arlington Ridge Center during registration hours and provide proof of residency for all minors and household members being added to the account.

Park District non-residents do not need to show proof of residency and may either create an account in person at one of the above locations or call 847.577.3000 and ask staff to create a household account over the phone.

Regardless of residency status, new account holders must provide a name, address, email, phone number, and your date of birth to set up an account.

Account Creation Information

The following forms of identification will be accepted to prove residency:

1. Each adult on the profile must provide either a driver’s license or state ID with current address OR two of the following: utility bill(s), no older than 60 days, voter registration card, or a vehicle registration card listing name and household address.

2. For children who do not have a driver’s license or state ID, provide a current report card, school picture ID, birth certificate, parent insurance card listing dependents, or other form of ID a parent may have that prove guardianship or that the children reside at that address.

If the activity is full, what happens?

Registration must be completed in order to be placed on a waitlist. We do not charge you to register for a waitlist spot and will contact you if a space opens for that activity or additional activities are added. Please be sure payment information is accurate and saved to your household account as we require payment to transfer from the waitlist into an activity. Please note: we recommend that, if possible, you register for a secondary activity option with openings.

6 | AHPD 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Celebrating 100 Years

June 9, 2025 marks the Arlington Heights Park District's 100th year anniversary. We are proud to share and celebrate this important milestone with our residents from June 2025 through May 2026.

The Arlington Heights Park District’s mission is to enrich the community by providing quality recreation, facilities and fun.

We do this by:

• Ensuring the efficient and effective use of financial resources and Park District assets.

• Providing innovative recreational opportunities and facilities to meet the diverse programming needs of our community.

• Continuing the District’s pursuit of being a community, regional, state and national leader.

• Promoting an environment of cooperation, collaboration and teamwork.

• Providing quality internal and external customer-focused service.

• Providing stewardship of our open spaces and natural resources.

Over the past 100 years, the Arlington Heights Park District has reached countless milestones. Let's journey back to where it all began!

The foundation of the Arlington Heights Park District was laid when residents approved its formation through a referendum on June 9, 1925. Just days later, on June 18, the first Park Board meeting was held with Commissioners Nathaniel Banta, Henry Klehm, Eugene Berbecker, Albert Volz, and Julius D. Flentie.

The Arlington Heights Park District (AHPD) has a rich history of growth and community impact. Early acquisitions included Memorial Park and leased land along railroad tracks, with the first tax levy in 1926 raising $1,335.72. By 1931, bonds funded land development, and in 1939, the WPA-supported Recreation Park Pool and Field House opened.

The 1950s saw expanded programming, and a 1955 referendum secured $675,000 for land acquisition, including Pioneer Park. Rapid population growth in the 1960s led to three major bond referendums, funding facilities like Hasbrook Park, community centers, pools, and Arlington Lakes Golf Club. In 1971, a survey highlighted interest in indoor facilities, resulting in Forest View Tennis Club (1973). Financial challenges in the mid-1970s led to a "Save the Parks" referendum, helping sustain operations.

The 1980s focused on maintenance and earned AHPD its first National Gold Medal. The district acquired North School in 1987, now its Administration Building, and launched the "Children at Play" (CAP) program in 1989. The 1990s brought expansion, including Lake Arlington programming, Nickol Knoll Park, and Senior Center activities.

Since 2000, AHPD has secured over $10 million in grants, funding projects like pool renovations and community center upgrades. Major initiatives include the Arlington Ridge Center (formerly Olympic Park) and upcoming developments guided by the 2024 Comprehensive Plan.

Some ongoing skills emphasized throughout our two-year program are recognition and printing of first name with upper and lower-case letters, naming basic colors and shapes, finding upper and lower-cases letters when named, and reciting numbers 1-20.

3-5 years | Junior Swim School

No parent in water

30 minutes-group lessons

Junior Swim School classes are 30-minute sessions designed to help children gain confidence in the water independently. Many children will be entering a pool without a parent for the first time, so our instructors' priority is to ensure they feel at ease and comfortable. This process may involve starting with basic tasks such as getting the face and hair wet, before moving on to supported floats, bobs, kick board use, and eventually swimming a short distance without assistance underwater. To end the session on a positive note, our instructors engage the children in a fun game during the last five minutes of the class.

5-12 Years | Swim School

40 minutes

Swim School now offers 40-minute classes, providing more time for repetition and skill development. Swimming is considered a vital lifelong skill, and we believe that repetition is essential for success.

In our group Swim School environment, we aim to motivate your child through progressive levels of instruction. Starting with foundational skills such as correct face and body position, floats, and opening eyes underwater without goggles, your child will advance to learning all swim strokes, treading water in deep areas, dives, and flip turns for those who are interested.

To make learning enjoyable, our instructors incorporate games that utilize swim school skills, and we reserve the last few minutes of each class for fun activities like jumping off the diving boards. Overcoming fears associated with diving boards is an important milestone, and our instructors are present in the water to provide support and guidance, creating a safe and encouraging environment for your child to develop their confidence.

Water Babies will be drop-in this summer and will require a punch card.

Pop-Up Private Swim Lessons

All Ages

An à la carte experience–class code 89190

• Designed so you can pick a specific teacher to make your child feel comfortable. Or maybe you have a favorite teacher (an amenity not possible with group swim lessons).

• Perfect for the young child who does not like a group environment for swim lessons.

• 30-minute swim lesson with private oneon-one attention. Accomplish a lot without the distraction of other kids in a group.

• Tell your instructor what you want to work on–or if you’re not sure, we will come up with a plan together. Some people sign their kids up with one goal in mind such as: eliminating fear water, going off diving board for the first time, or swim team strokes/skills/endurance/breathing tips.

• Great compliment to Muskies or Interpark Swim Team!

• Parents–put your name on the list for class code 89190 if you’re interested. We will email everyone who signs up for that code when instructors’ schedules begin to POP-UP on our registration portal.

• Residents | $45

• Non-Residents | $68

• Summer Private lessons will be at Recreation Pool, Frontier Pool, or Arlington Ridge Center.

Before your child’s first swimming lesson please review the following by scanning the QR code:

• Refund policy

• Make-up policy

• Swim Lessons Code of Conduct (for everyone’s safety in the water)

• Why we strongly suggest no goggles for beginner swimmers

76 | ADULT LEAGUES

The Park District offers adult leagues at a variety of competitive levels to accommodate players and teams with a range of recreational interests and abilities. All players must be 18 years or older.

Registration

One player registers an entire team and all fees are due at registration. Register for your preferred level and, if that level is full, register for the waitlist. Do NOT register for the wrong competitive level to get into a league. If you are a player looking to join a team, please contact the league supervisor.

Bracketing and Scheduling

Once registration closes, brackets and season schedules are created. Final brackets are determined by a variety of factors including, the number of teams registered and past season records.

• We try our best to evenly assign game time slots and cannot accommodate special schedule requests.

• Once schedules are finalized, we will email a schedule link, season information and team roster/waiver instructions to the captain.

Rosters and Waivers

Your team roster also serves as the individual waiver for all players and a new roster with all players’ signatures must be submitted before the start of your first game EVERY season.

Adult Basketball Leagues

Games are played on Thursday evenings. Each team plays seven regular season games, followed by a single elimination playoff based on regular season standings. Awards are paid out to the winners of the regular season and playoffs. Please note: If we have an uneven number of teams registered, teams may be required to play more than one game in a night. (CE)
