LAGUNA SECA!!!! AHRMA ran at Laguna Seca, a bucket list track for most and one few have checked off. I still can’t get over it and probably never will, until I go myself. Yeah, that's right, the editor of AHRMA MAG didn't go, how can this be? Well, it's pretty simple, I'm just like every other AHRMA member and the logistics were tricky, especially during winter. Regardless though, a prize of racing at a track like no other made it an easy decision for many across the country and arrangements were made. Individual racers seeing the massive hurdle of getting their bikes from east of the Rockies to the hallowed ground of Monterey (or is it Salinas?), banded together in ways that some have never imagined. From simply looking for space within a more capable racer's rig, to securing a full on long-haul transport service, the logistics were tricky (I said this already, but it's true!). But with determination, teamwork and plenty of money (like with everything we do!), plans were made, transportation was secured and the days checked off by those going, like a kid counting down to Christmas. Unfortunately, I was not one of those kids (at heart), though I did try to make it work. The stark reality of amateur racing, working (AHRMA MAG isn't my only gig) and raising a young family (6, 4 and 1), it is tricky (there I go again with that word!). I was probably seriously considering it for a week after the event was green-lighted and then slowly reality settled in and I became a cheerleader for those who had the means to go. From the sidelines (2000 miles away), watching the weekend unfold was exciting, bittersweet, but still EXCITING! AHRMA running on the same track as giants of MotoGP and MotoAmerica—very cool! One of the surprise highlights for those distance-challenged like myself was the series of videos Shawn Smith released from the paddock, interviewing fellow racers and capturing all those bucket lists being checked off. Thank you, Shawn, for stepping up and capturing the moments in between racing... It was almost like I was there. Now with bucket lists checked (for some), we move onto more familiar territory (Robeling, Kershaw, Willow), but then Topeka. I'm going to be a Topeka; I better be at Topeka... I'm so ready to race and that should be a really exciting event, all disciplines, and even a new one, drag racing! AHRMA MAG Editor - RR #233 ahrmamag@ahrma.org

Hello Fellow AHRMA Members, This is the first of a years worth of columns I will share in the AHRMA Mag. It was an honor to be elected to the board of trustees two years ago, serving as our treasurer last year. At the first trustee meeting of 2020, my colleagues on the board chose me to lead our organization. I am humbled by the trust. We have a fine group of trustees, board officers, and our executive director. We get along well, and the spirit of cooperation is high. The season is finally here.

The season is finally here. For AHRMA Staff, Trustees and volunteers, the off-season has been a busy time catching up action items put off due to the pace of the race season, making corrections for the lessons learned from 2019, and putting in place new processes, programs and people to make 2020 an even better experience for our members. For many members, the off-season was time to build that “dream bike” for the new season and/or rebuild and upgrade existing race bikes in anticipation. I for one am excited to stroll the pits and check out the results! I think most will agree, the newly implemented electronic voting platform for AHRMA’s annual election was a success. The process went smoothly with a record of 38% participation rate. The vast majority of votes were cast electronically, but provision was made for those who preferred paper ballots. We recognize the re-election of sitting Trustees Beno Rodi and Rob Poole, while welcoming Albert Newmann and Tim Terrell to the Board. The Off-Road season got underway at the Morgan County Celebration Arena in Priceville, AL, for an AHRMA indoor Short Track. Cold weather was left outside and good racing in front of a record spectator crowd made for a successful event. Next up was the 24th Annual Duel in Desert motocross in Buckeye, AZ. In a little different twist, the Post Vintage classes raced on Saturday and the Vintage classes ran on Sunday. Tony Paul (AHRMA FEBRUARY/MARCH 2020

Off-Road Director) and myself made the trek out west and greatly enjoyed meeting folks, renewing old friendships and racing the Dave Boydstuncrafted track. Our Road Race season got underway at Laguna Seca WeatherTech Raceway, which has to be considered a “bucket list” track for most. Many thanks to AHRMA’s Road Race Directors, Tony and Faynisha Pentecost, as well as the Road Race Planning Committee who worked diligently during the off-season through multiple challenges to make this event a reality. The annual AHRMA Road Race banquet took place at Laguna Seca’s Hospitality Pavilion where everyone got together for a delicious meal, presentations of the 2019 Championship awards as well as the special and perpetual awards. AHRMA’s first Board of Trustees meeting was in Salinas, CA, after the Laguna Seca events. New Trustees Albert Newmann and Tim Terrell were seated and returning Trustees Beno Rodi and Rob Poole confirmed. The 2020 AHRMA Officers were elected with Arthur Kowitz as Chairman of the Board, Kelly Shane as Secretary and Brian Larrabure as Treasurer. All of the agenda items are included in the written minutes which have been posted to www.ahrma.org. Everyone should be proud of all the AHRMA Trustees and their continuing contributions to the club and sport we love. I very much look forward to working with them this year as we endeavor to make AHRMA even better for the members in 2020! We have many big projects for 2020 that are both exciting and a little scary. One such undertaking is the planned multi-discipline event in Topeka, KS, over the Memorial Day weekend. This cornerstone event will be branded as the AHRMA Classic MotoFest at Heartland Motorsports Park. There will be Cross Country, Trials, Vintage Motocross, Post Vintage Motocross, Dirt Track, Road Racing and even a Vintage Drag race on the same campus as we bring all of AHRMA together for one mega-event! Please plan to attend and don’t be afraid to reach out to the Directors of your favorite discipline to ask how you can volunteer to help make this weekend a great success for AHRMA.

It Is All About The NUMBERS!!! Rule 9.5.2: When used, letters must be at least three inches tall (they can be taller). Upper case letters only should be used on number plates (mandatory). Rule 9.5.6 Numbers must be at least seven-inches high, block style, with a width of one-inch and legible. I am throwing out the gauntlet for all you racers. I not only challenge, I dare each one of you to take the time to hand score two races. I am not talking about two races with a few bikes. Look at the grids and find the biggest grid you are not racing in and try it.

In no way am I saying everyone has an unreadable number. Those who have proper numbers, Thank You. You may think you have the prettiest number on the grid. Pretty does not equate to readable. As I watch the grid form at different tracks and try to read some of the numbers, I cannot read them and you are sitting still. Marcia is one of the best hand scorers I know and often times you just become a ---- on her score sheet. She is trying to read them when you are at high speeds and bunched together. You may ask why this is a big deal since we have transponders. Electronics often fail or the scoring loop may quit working. Scoring protests are often lodged. We then have to rely on the hand scoring to resolve issues. Just as an example, we have three number 26s in a race. It may be 26e, 26d and then just a 26 is out there. Interpreting the hand scoring when the letters are not readable may cost you. The hand scoring may end up with three number 26s with no letters or you may become one of those ---- on the score sheet. I am sitting in the tower at Roebling Road looking across at tech as I write this. I see three out of six numbers that I could read at speed. Yes, I have hand scored many times over the years. I see some where the numbers look okay but I have no idea what the letter is. I see some that I cannot read at all with all the different color variations and borders. We want you to have the correct finishing position and points but—we need your help. Clean up those numbers. Read the handbook and make sure your numbers are legal. I will step off my soapbox now. Looking forward to seeing you hand scoring in the near future. – Tony and Faynisha Pentecost AHRMA National Roadrace Directors Faynisha: 256.506.6603 Tony: 256. 506. 8254 ahrma@oneracing.org

Spring forward turn left To all our Flattrackers out there. We have made it through the coldest part of the winter to date. Our first event held in Priceville, Alabama went well. Coming up fast will be AHRMA's first visit to Gaston, South Carolina (known as GTR), on March 21. Aa expected is should be a beautifully prepared track by one of our previous promoters, Rick Lovett. Again we should have a good turn out for vintage classes along with the South East Flat Track group of classes. Shortly after this scheduled event, there will be the always well-attended TT and short track races at Aonia, Ga. April 21. If you have ever thought of riding on one of the best prepared short tracks, this is the one. Everyone here in the southeast has had tremendous amounts of rain, which hopefully has taken a break, so we can get in some racing. Put your winter gear away and get ready for spring. And a big special event coming up July 17th will be the Fulton County Fairgrounds, Wauseon, Ohio 1/2 mile. Because of the printed program for the race, you need to enter early. There is on the AHRMA web site instructions for pre-entries. There will also be a notice of preentry discount ($5.00) along with a notification of $50.00 post entry. This race will coincide with AMCA three day extravaganza.

---- Thank you! --- First of all, I would like to say thanks to all the great people who have reached out to congratulate me on my permanent position as Off-road director for AHRMA. I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing organization. I look forward to meeting all our Cross Country racers at White Lightning for the National Cross Country awards Banquet and at Diamond Don's Friday night for the National MX banquet. Our Next Motocross event on the schedule is DeSoto Motorsports Park hosted by the world-famous Ricky (Gator) Parker. I expect to see some great racing out there as the Gator has called out his uncle Heath Parker and his father two-time world GP champion, Trampas

Parker. I can already smell the oil cooking in those air-cooled 200cc fourstrokes, this is definitely not a battle anyone is going to want to miss. Also, we have rescheduled the National for Monster Mountain on the weekend of September 5-6, 2020. The promoter, Keith Kingsfield, has already started improving the lower parking area for the GP track to ensure we won't have any trouble getting motorhomes in and out of the facility. Let's go racing...

Our House is a very very very fine house.... Housekeeping... We have made a ton of progress in the past 9 months, but we have more to go. I would like to ask every member with access to the internet (and yes, this includes smart phone only, so not having a computer is no excuse), to log into ahrma.motorsportreg.com and do the following: In your personal profile: • If your name is all upper case or all lower case, please change it so the first character of each name is uppercase and the rest lower case; • Verify your mailing address - update it if necessary; • Make sure you have someone identified as your emergency contact; and • Verify all other profile data for accuracy. We have opportunities (currently roadracing but that could change) where we are able to send our race results as press releases. This takes a good deal of effort on our part to make sure the information is good. In your AHRMA settings - you will see a "Membership" box, with AHRMA listed below your personal profile information. Please go through each option in the questions list and: • •

Verify your "skill level" if you ride offroad disciplines - update if necessary; Tire brand - There are contingency opportunities that are available or may be pursued but without this information, we can't effectively provide #s to the tire manufacturers; • Verify your race number. Contact me at cindy.mclean@ahrma.org if you have issues; • Verify that your vehicle(s) are all listed and listed correctly in your garage. Every vehicle should have: - Year - many of you are missing the year on your vehicles - if you don't know what it is, give it your best guess - I'm sure you have an era so that it is legal in the class you run; - Make; - Model - PLEASE make sure that you include model and that the model designation is what the manufacturer defined If you don't have the ability to edit your vehicles, then add them as though they are new, and delete the one(s) you are unable to correct. I truly appreciate everyone's effort, and am gratified that many of our members are reading my column and taking my requests to heart. This makes my job much easier, and I thank you for that! On February 1st and 2nd, 2020, Arizona Cycle Park (aka ACP) in Buckeye, Arizona, hosted the AVDRA/AHRMA opening rounds of the National Vintage and Post Vintage Motocross Series on a great vintage-friendly track layout on both days. The AVDRA crew did a top-notch job of running and scoring; the races went perfectly. Chris Johnson was on the mic all weekend keeping everyone posted on what was going on and when. PVMX and Modern Support Classes ran on Saturday. Vintage, Women and Kids raced* on Sunday. This schedule showcased the Vintage Premier and Classic machines on the final day and had the largest entry lists. Saturday night, AVDRA (American Vintage Dirt Racers Association) hosted an awards party complete with a live band followed by a free BBQ and AVDRA Series Awards. There

was live Supercross on a big screen too! Fun was had by all! AHRMA Executive Director Curt Comer raced a cool Harry Hindall-framed Triumph 650 Twin and off-road director Tony Paul raced two classes on Saturday as well. Standout riders on both days were Arizona’s Barry Anglemeyer and California’s Rick Daniels, both coming away Saturday with a clean sweep of all the motos. Sunday’s Vintage program had them go head-to-head in four motos, and everyone watched these two guys haul the mail like you don’t see every day. Both were on Yamahas. Barry came out the winner, but Rick gave him a good challenge. Another standout ride came on Sunday by Arizona’s Samantha Condon (aka Sammi). The Women’s classes all run in one moto with all sizes and ages of bikes. In moto one, Sammi got away on her new 1972 CZ 250 and won 1st place

Sammi also raced in the Vintage 250 Novice class and beat her twin brother, Jake, on his Husky, for another 1st place. This race had a great turnout of Premier and Classic machines: BSA, Triumph, Matchless, Ariel, CZ, Bultaco, Montesa, Maico and more. Bob and Sharon Bean made the trip out west worthwhile and Bob took home an armload of trophies while Sharon took a million pictures of the event. Nice to have them there. Hanging My son Tazio and I riding on a CRF50

Out

With: Chris Dietz

On an AHRMA race weekend the paddock is full of race bikes. Where the heck do these bikes come from? Are these bikes skillfully crafted in high dollar workshops where cost isn't any issue? Maybe, these bikes are built by overworked, sleep deprived, eccentric enthusiasts in messy garages. We all know that the bikes and characters in the paddock run the gambit of high dollar to shoestring/ borrowed parts machines. This is a story about my garage, my sanctuary. The house is small, 740 sq. ft., with no basement and no attic. The lot is located in the working class city of Menasha in the wonderful state of Wisconsin. The garage is 768 sq. ft., with an attic full of parts, or chaos depending on your outlook. This is essentially a three-car garage that is divided into a two-car and one-car garage. The one-car side has all of the things that people have in their garage or garden shed, with the exception of a classic Saab 900 turbo convertible and a few old bikes crammed in because there are too many bikes on the side where I should be fixing bikes. The two-car side is where the beer is spilled. This garage has to be heated because winter is long and cold. In the corner is the savior of winter, the furnace. The furnace is a salvaged unit from an trailer home (don't laugh, it works pretty well). The walls and ceiling are insulated and drywalled. 100-amp electric 28

service keeps the lights from flickering under load. Tools and equipment are very basic. Working as a mechanic and restoration technician on exotic vintage Italian cars has forced me to be creative almost to a fault. Basic hand tools, a few work benches, a parts washer, a lathe, and a buffer (who doesn't like polished aluminum?) are about it for tools. One lift for servicing bikes. Motorcycles are lined up with about .120 between handlebars and gas tanks. Parts are crammed in between bikes. Engines are under benches. Stacks of cylinders and cylinder heads can easily be overlooked. The service door is covered in stickers. Of course, there is a stereo waiting to blast out tunes to drive the mood. During the summer, the neighbor kids may ask to come over and look at motorcycles. I can't say no. Growing up I never had the opportunity to be around motorcycles. Heck, I pulled my first motorcycle out of a dumpster, a Norton Commando, but that's another story. My four-year-old son was crawling over the bikes before he could walk. A garage packed full of 25 to 30 motorcycles seems totally normal for him. My wife has no issue with the

Just don't call the fire dept. again, thanks! Joe Haupt encouraged me to build my race bike and without him I wouldn't be writing this article or would I have met so many amazing vintage bike addicts. I met Joe through facebook and some of the CB160 and vintage racing groups. Joe told me how easy it was to build a race bike and despite my tendencies to overthink things, he always brought me back down to earth; many a memorable phone call or late night when I had one too many. One of the more memorable stories took place on a normal warm early summer Tuesday. Due to a lack of storage I decided to hang my leathers from the ceiling in the garage. I opened the garage door and wheeled out an old bike to take to my local two wheel Tuesday. I left the overhead door open to air out the garage while I was away. A few hours later I returned to a giggling wife and excited three-yearold son. Something wasn't right. In my absence a fire truck with a full crew made a visit to my garage. Apparently, my leathers hanging in the garage caused a bit of a stir. The hanging leathers looked as though someone had hung FEBRUARY/MARCH 2020

themselves in the garage. The firefighters were quite relieved when they realized that the outline of a human was my leathers. My son, Tazio, was then given a tour of the fire truck; he sure loved that. Remember to be careful where you choose to store your leathers. The first National AHRMA races of 2020 happened at the Celebration Arena in Priceville, Alabama. With dirt track racing the order of the day, the four-legged horses were put to pasture and the two-wheeled kind rolled in for a day of high-speed action on the meticulously maintained oval dirt track. Hosted by the Tennessee Valley Flat Trackers, AHRMA was welcomed with open arms to join the fun, led by our Hall of Fame Dirt Track director, David Aldana. Friday's practice gave everyone a chance to feel out the track and tweak their bikes for the following day's racing. Friday evening found David Aldana promoting the event at Redstone HarleyDavidson, in Huntsville, AL. Signing autographs and spreading the good word about dirt track racing and AHRMA. With practice out of the way and a good night’s rest, the heat racing gave the early crowds a good show with tight action and occasional little gas fires on the track to keep everyone warm during a surprisingly chilly weather for the south (at least to me, coming from Wisconsin). It was a busy day for Richard Brodock, bouncing from one class to the next, some vintage, some not. It was interesting to see a fellow road racer competing and loving another AHRMA discipline. One of the big selling points for Richard is the ability to run a bike in multiple classes and less fatigue per race than other disciplines. TOOLBOX TIPS

DIY BUILDING CONTROL CABLES BY: ARTHUR KOWITZ

loose from the cable wire itself. The common and normally

Both road racing and off-road motorbikes, vintage and eccentric modern bikes often need unique control cables built or repaired. Who does this kind of stuff? We do. Cables are no longer available for many older bikes and custom builds always need cables. Here are a few tips to help make reliable cables for your race bike. The little brass fittings that fasten to the ends of control cables are referred to as ‘ends.’ They are usually soldered on. These can easily be purchased, along with cable wire, housing end caps (to cover the end of the housing) and housings, from Motion-Pro.

accepted fastening method is to solder the end in place. Solder used for electrical work is not as strong as the solder used in plumbing where pipes must stay together. Plumber's silver solder is the way to go. Let me share a trick I have used for years with full reliability. After measuring to fit, cut the wire a few millimeters long and slide the cable end into place, letting the extra wire hang out the end. Then splay the strands of the exposed extra wire outward. Take a small bit of welding rod or even solid core copper wire and grind it to a point. Jam the point into the center of the splayed wire until it is wedging the end in place and cut it off as tidily as you can. Solder the end, the wire, and the wedged in pin together. Voila!

It's easy to see that the challenge here is to secure the cable end and minimize, if not eliminate, the chance of it coming

South Central Regional Update:

2020 Catch Up BY: ALBERT NEWMANN / PHOTOS: BOBBY HEDGE

The new year hopefully has been treating most of you well so far. With any luck, the mild winter allowed most of you to spend some extra time in the garage working on race bikes for the 2020 season. For the region, we again will have a busy spring with race action kicking off at Desoto Motorsport Park March 28-29 with National Cross-Country and Motocross racing as well as a regional Trials event on March 28! It will be the first regional Trials for the South-Central region, so there is some excitement taking this on. The following weekend, we slide over to Jefferson, TX, for the 18th annual Riverport National which will be the location of our regional awards presentation. April 18-19, the Arkansas Dirt Riders will host both a National Trials event and Cross-Country race. Please check the national website for all upcoming nationals as well as regional events. There are more on the calendar which we will speak to in the next issue! Prior to the new year, we had a superb regional event in Kentwood, LA. The Wildwood MX Park was host to the Cantium Oilman’s Regional Motocross race which was a huge success. David, Sivi, and Dayton Shirah were perfect track hosts as well as the folks who conceptualized and put the event together. Mark Smithard, Brian Oakley, and Stuart McAvoy strung together a great group of sponsors and crew to execute a first-class event. Many riders from Louisiana who we have not seen in a while made a return to AHRMA racing as well as great support from our regular regional riders. For a regional race, it was a surprise to have as many additional national riders from Georgia, Missouri, Florida, Tennessee, and Mississippi come race with us! Saturday’s vintage action showcased some great racing, especially in the Sportsman 500 gate as it was Gary Davis beating out Tommy Gates for the Intermediate class win and Bill Hobson holding off 36

Chris “Chili Pepper” Richardson and Travis Shackelford for the Expert class. Bobby Hedge made the trek over for the finale and secured a regional championship in the 50+ Intermediate group. However, the entire class was in close competition each moto with Brian Oakley and Keller Crowley hanging around the top of the pack letting Hedge know he wasn’t in full control of the outcome. Wes Willis is enjoying his new racing class since moving up to 70+ Expert and he has given notice to this fast group of racers that 2020 racing has a new player on the scene. The much-improved Kasi Cross was showing a new level of speed on her Bultaco as she secured the regional Women’s Novice crown. Post Vintage racing on Sunday featured over 100 entries. The intense racing in the Grand Prix 250 Expert class had fans lining the fence as Joel White, Bill Hobson, and Tommy Cannon put on a show. These were perhaps some of the fastest laps of the day and it was a 3-1 Joel White finish to take the overall in the class. With eleven racers, the 50+ Novice group was the largest class of the day, and this novice group showcased close racing up and down the lineup. John Moore managed to hold off Paul Green, Aaron Conners, Thomas Hall, and Don Cerise to take the win on the day. Unfortunate for local legend Glen “Hammerhead” Guedry that he could not make it to the second gate drop as he knocked off the rust to win moto one, but it wasn’t a complete loss for “Hammerhead” as he was awarded a new yellow Intermediate stripe for his display of skill around the track! Hoot Parker secured a regional championship on this day as he held off Phil Reed in the 50+ Expert class as well as Mike Cole won the region in the 60+ Intermediates as he staved off healthy competition from Michael Alf, Joey McCoy, and Brian Smith. The Next Gen classes were well received here at Wildwood with over 20 entries and most seemed to enjoy the tamed down layout of the course. Bryce Landry showed incredible speed in the Next Gen 250 Expert group holding off Keith Davis for the win. Kennedy Meche looked strong in the Millenium 125 Intermediates with a win over Kyle Jenkins as well as winning the Current two-stroke 125 Intermediate class over Josh Sopko and Roger Hunt. The evening dinners and morning breakfast the Oilman’s group put on may have been the buzz of the weekend; having four meals at the track provided to you is not a normal occurrence. We will be returning to Kentwood in 2020 for another Oilman’s regional event and I cannot wait!

For another returning engagement, AHRMA once again was provided premium space at the Dallas International Motorcycle Show. We had a great group of bikes on display again this year and the interest was overwhelming from the attendees at this year’s event. The road racing Yamahas of Ricky Pearson and Mike Milligan drew great attention as well as the Broc Glover 1980 Yamaha OW250 supplied by Michael Holigan and Justin Young’s 1981 Maico 490. It was a well-rounded group of racers from 1970-1985 in the show and our booth setup this year featured video of vintage local racing of all disciplines. It is a tireless event but well worth the attention we were able to draw to the average motorcycle enthusiast. Much thanks to Jay and Rene Huffman, Justin Young, Troy Anderson, Ricky Pearson, Mike Milligan, Mia Vincent, Michael Holigan and the Ice House at the Quarry restaurant, Bobby Hedge, and those who loaned bikes for the event. As mentioned earlier, the regional schedule is posted up on the AHRMA website and AHRMA South-Central Facebook page. For a first time, we will make a return trip to Jefferson, TX, the weekend of September 12-13 for regional motocross. It’s something we have tried to coordinate for years but never could put together, so we are excited to bring a motocross event back to Diamond Don’s facility outside the annual national event. One notable change to those participating in the regional motocross series this year is that to be eligible for the championship you must attend two of the regional races. We will still award 10 bonus points to each regional-only event and the minimum to qualify for the championship will be six of the nine on the schedule. We have a new sponsor for 2020! BH25 Photography has come on board with a generous donation to the regional coffers. Bobby and Ginny Hedge are launching a new photography venture this year so be on the lookout for some great photo work and posters to commemorate your race day. You know if you want an action shot Bobby is the guy who snags those photos! We still need a couple more sponsors for the 2020 race season so please contact me. The big buzz around the country is the National Championship race finale at Nichols Park in Henryetta, OK. For 2020, the T&S National will host an array of vintage

#114 Bill Hobson leading the pack at Kentwood

racing with the additions of Trials and Dirt Track. For motocross, the races are going to be double points and to earn a national championship your best 5 races prior to the T&S event will be your points total coming into the race. If you don’t hold a commanding lead before this event you will most likely need to make it here to take on your competition. It’s a change for 2020 racing and should put an emphasis on the final event as well as bringing top competition from across the United States to face off. This past month, AHRMA lost one of its young members, Jonathan Tyler “JT” Lee. Our condolences to the Lee family, he will be missed. Until next month… Albert Newmann newmann.albert@gmail.com

Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Series

The 2019 Cross Country series in the Mid-Atlantic region was a definite success with good weather at eight of ten rounds and great participation at all ten. Numerous classes were hotly contested in both Vintage and Post Vintage categories. Contenders need six class finishes minimum. Vintage 200 Intermediate had six contenders battling all season with Larry Warner taking the win over Grant Reichart. Vintage 60+ Intermediate was a packed class as well where Dave McIntyre held off the charges of Anthony Long and Mike Ruggiere, finishing one-two-three on the season. In Post Vintage action, Randy McCoy took first for the season in the competitive Post Vintage 200 Intermediate class over Brian Holley in second, Ryan Tosta in third. The Post Vintage age classes are always a hotbed of competition. Joe Cole bested five other contenders in Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate to take the win. Kevin Marshall followed in second with Tommy Tippett in third. Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate also had six racers in contention with Doug Kurz winning out over Dave McIntyre and Anthony Long. At the top of the Expert ranks, Rylin Pacella claimed first in Post Vintage 200 Expert over Christian Brumbaugh while in Post Vintage Open Expert, Brian Grove took home the gold followed by Mark Hummel. We are pleased to announce the following Cross Country advancements to Intermediate status: David Salmen, Kevin Webb, Lamar Zell, Ed Klinger, Kerry Kubena and Lynn Perkins. Advancing to Expert are: Joe Cole, Larry Warner, Brett Reichart, Joshua Zerance and James B. Waddell. Get ready to race, the new season starts April 5th at Rocket Raceway. NORTHWEST REGION

2019 AHRMA Northwest Regional Awards Dinner BY: ELLEN VOERMANS A smaller than usual group of members gathered for the 2019 Northwest Regional Awards dinner on Saturday, January 25th. This smaller gathering somehow felt more like a big house party than an awards dinner and everyone had a great time. George Gerstenberg of Cycle Gear, and an active AHRMA member, once again provided fantastic raffle prizes and a sponsorship check for the Northwest Region. The evening started with a tribute to Herb Wolff, one of the Northwest’s long-time members who passed away in December. Herb was a big part of the AHRMA family in the Northwest and we will miss him. Debbie Poole presented the awards for Trials, Motocross, and the Iron Butt awards, given to those riders who participated in Trials, Cross Country and Motocross at three Northwest Regional events. She also presented Charlie Higdon the Northwest Sponsor of the Year award for his sponsorship of Emily Poole in trials on his Montesa. Jeff Bushey and Wayne Hawes presented the awards for Cross Country. Two Northwest Region members received special National awards. Gary Gronow received the Mick Andrews Trophy for the second year in a row by winning the Modern Classic Expert class. Luke Sayer won the Don Schmutzler Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to AHRMA Trials. Now it time for the Northwest Regional members to get ready for the 2020 season which starts April 4-5, 2020, at Burrows Ranch in Chrome, California.

The Deep Racing Roots of the

Myrtle and Limey on one of their many sidecar adventures

Hollingsworths

and their Harley-Davidsons

Written by: Don Hollingsworth with additional comments by Dick Hollingsworth James A. ‘Limey’ Hollingsworth officially opened the St. Augustine Harley-Davidson dealership in October of 1946. James was given the nick name Limey, as he often mimicked the sound of the British motorcycle engines he heard. Eating citrus fruit helped prevent scurvy so English sailors were called Limeys. Dad had raced Harleys on dirt tracks as a young man. As a dealer, he soon began hosting motorcycling events in the area, including ‘poker runs,’ cycle tours, campsite rides, woods runs and a TT race. 40

Dad and Mom (Myrtle) were true motorcycle enthusiasts. On one occasion James and Myrtle rode a 45 cubic inch Harley from their dealership in St. Augustine, Florida, to Montgomery, Alabama, to a dirt track race. In Montgomery, Dad raced the dirt track race held there, and then rode home on that 45 the same day! That’s the way it was done back then. In 1958, Dad participated in the Jack Pine Endurance Run on a K Model. We’re not sure how he finished, but we know he did get a hernia pulling his woods machine out of the mud holes he encountered. He raced local drag strips and abandoned airports. He ran a 74-inch flathead called Bertha that had two light flywheels instead of the stock heavy and light sides. He removed second gear from the three-speed, hand-shift transmission only using first and

third and won many top gas events. Limey also ran drag races at the Thunderbolt Drag Strip in Jacksonville on an 883cc Sportster. He won the Street Stock class handily. When challenged to enter the fuel class one weekend, he obliged, and went home a double winner, despite sticking with gasoline in the Harley Sportster! The Norton factory team stayed at our Harley shop in the late '40s or early '50s when the 200-miler was held on the Beach Road Course. These guys were gracious enough to share many speed 'secrets' with Dad. They showed him how to build a set of parallel bars to balance flywheels and gave him the formula to use when doing so. I think we still have those parallel bars. Dad put spacers in the rod upper end of our lightweight 2-stroke racers to keep the upper rod bearing aligned under the piston. A little practice handed down to Dad from his connections with Mercury Kiekhaefer racing outboard engines. We have a picture somewhere of Dad racing his boat near Vilano Beach, FL, tilted at a vertical angle and about to go into the drink. When we were kids, we found a picture in the back of the old San Marco Avenue store one day of a guy on a 45 cubic inch flat head motor going down US 1 when it was a 2 lane. The guy was standing on the solo seat. Idiot, we thought, until we questioned Dad to discover that 'idiot' was him! That's when Dad's famous saying “You do as I SAY, not as I DO” came into effect. The old San Marco Avenue store is now known as Research and Development and is used for building the AHRMA stuff and an occasional cafe street bike. When Myrtle and Limey’s oldest son, Al, became old enough to enter American Motorcycle Association road races, he was permitted to use the trusty 1953 165cc HarleyDavidson three-speed, two-stroke. From 1957 through 1959, Al raced in the lightweight road races held at Tomoka Park and Samsula Airport. The AMA Sportsman events were to grow out of these races. These were support events held in conjunction with the Daytona Novice, Amateur and Expert events held at the Speedway. In 1963, Al put a DS5 Cam in his 4-speed 250cc Sprint H and converted it into a road racer. Al won the Florida State Championship in Gainesville in 1963 with that bike. In 1964, Limey and Al bought a 1964 CRTT Aermacchi Harley-Davidson road racer to contest the AMA Novice class. Al won the Nelson Ledges, Windber, PA, and Des Moines, IA, road races to win the Novice Championship. At Savanah, GA, the same year, Al placed second in the 250cc and 500cc AMA Sportsman FEBRUARY/MARCH 2020

National Championship using the 250cc CRTT. He was also the Florida State 250cc Drag and Road Race Champion in 1964 after winning both events at Punta Gorda, FL. The event was not without conflict. Al’s Sprint was so notoriously fast no one would get on the line with him and it made AMA official “Pat” Patrick so mad he canceled the drags on Saturday. Sunday, they resumed, and Pat told everyone that if they refused to get on the line with Al they were automatically disqualified. The rest is history. Dick and Don Hollingsworth contested and often won road races in the 175 and 250cc Sportsman classes throughout Florida in the early ’60s. Florida had a strong road race organization which was sponsored by the South Eastern Harley-Davidson Dealership Association and sanctioned by the AMA. Dad served as president of this Dealer Association during a portion of this time. Events were run at Fernandina, Gainesville, Punta Gorda, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville and Daytona. After working at the dealership weekdays, we would work on racing motors into the night. Working in the shop until noon on Saturday, the bikes were loaded into our 6-cylinder Chevy truck Saturday evenings to be hauled to the race destinations Saturday night to make race practice Sunday morning. It was indeed a frenetic lifestyle. One weekend found Al and Dad in the Midwest contesting novice events. Dick, Don and shop mechanic, Harold Thomas, stayed behind to help Mom run the store. But the weekend found Don, Dick, Harold and Mom at the road races in Jacksonville. After returning home, Mom got Limey, Al and Helen Hollingsworth a call from Dad explaining Al had just won the Nelson Ledges Novice road race. We were elated, but Mom never missed a beat. She quickly explained how Don, Dick and Harold had just finished 1, 2, and 3 at the Jacksonville Sportsman road race. Fun times indeed. Through the 1960s and into the ‘70s, the Harley Factory would spend a week or two in St. Augustine with the Hollingsworth family to prepare their road race bikes for Daytona. In attendance were Roger Reiman, George Roeder, Cal Rayborn, Mert Lawill, Babe Demay, Ralph White and Dick O’Brien. Dick’s assistant, Clyde Denzer, also made the trip each year and was indeed a most valuable member of

while testing was equally interesting. Mary would team up with Mom and make homemade bread, chocolate chip and oatmeal-raisin cookies, and other goodies which undoubtably worried Dick O’Brien to no end. Dick would gain three horsepower on the road but lose the weight-tohorsepower ratio because of the homemade goodies. It’s a good thing we pushed-started those road racers, as that was the only saving grace! The evening Bar-B-Q cookouts at the Hollingsworth hacienda became quite popular along with the assorted activities that accompanied them. Imagine testing racing motors for 10 hours, and then returning to the smell of Bar-B-Q cooking and your favorite beverage waiting ice cold as the meat sizzled on the grill. Dad was quick to organize a tag football game, a game of hoops, volleyball or even a mini flat track race with lightweight Harleys on the concrete basketball court. After 45 minutes of rowdy sports, the call to eat was welcomed. The dinners were always outstanding. But after eating the fun really began. One night, Al organized a Snipe hunt. Teams of two were selected,

Don entering the infield at Daytona in 1968

that team. Rodger’s dad, Hank Reiman, and wife Mary, were always there. Dad always made arrangements for the ‘Wrecking Crew’ to test on a straight stretch of County Road 204 south of St. Augustine. He would solicit the Sheriff ’s Department to send two deputies, one to monitor the east end with another Deputy three miles to the west. When the road was clear, the 250cc CRTTs or 750cc side valve KRs would be rolled out for runs on the test road. Because Daytona was a ‘tall gearing’ track, gearing would be raised until each motor would barely tach its optimum. After a change was made to a machine, it was run once again to see if it could still pull that max gearing. If it over revved, additional gearing would be added and the testing would continue. For the most part, dynamometer testing at the factory eliminated the need to test cam profiles and pipe combinations, but dynamometers provide testing under a quite static test environment. It was interesting to see which combinations were trumped when tested under loads which included buffeting winds around a fairing moving through the air at 150 MPH. Good stuff. As interesting as the quest for horsepower was, the intrigue around what Myrtle Hollingsworth and Mary Reiman would have prepared for the guys to munch on 42

each team given a bag and the fun began. Our home in Araquay Park was surrounded by Palmetto woods on two sides. Most teams headed into the Palmetto thickets on the south side of the house; the hoops and hollering were comical. After perhaps 30 minutes of traipsing around in the woods, most teams returned with empty sacs. But isn’t that what Snipe hunting was all about? But last to come in were Al and I think Roger Reiman, and wouldn't you know it, they had something in their bags! As everyone gathered around, Roger reached into the bag and pulled out a little armadillo by the tail. Everyone had a great laugh, and right when the chuckles were subsiding, the little armadillo defecated on Roger’s hand! That’s when the laughter really started! We were fortunate through the years to have many racing stars

AHRMA is a member owned, not-forprofit organization, which is in very good health. Our paid staff and volunteers are dedicated and effective. However they would become stretched too thin if they took on every task our members would like to see addressed. In order to have a nice variety of AHRMA swag, apparel, and collectibles available at the track and on-line, we need some volunteer help. Most of our disciplines are vibrant, but one or two of them could also use assistance. Members have asked for other enhancements, which take time and effort to be successful. We can make these and other things happen by engaging the talents and resources of our members.

Will you pitch in? AHRMA needs a reliable volunteer to act as a media liaison for part of one day, 10 times per year. The task is short but very important to our racers. A 'GitR-Done' attitude would be a plus. email dbsuperbiker@gmail.com 50

Outgoing Personality wanted to help AHRMA with a season long raffle. A little bit of organizing, pitching tickets, and keeping track of results. the prize is a very nice motorcycle donated by one of our members. If you are the one, email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com AHRMA's Merchandise Sales Dept is being formalized. We have an experienced and dedicated staff already in place, but could use an administrative minded volunteer to keep us on the right track. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

The Barber Vintage Pro Cup 2020 road race is looking for a volunteer director to help plan a one-time event this October. This one will require rubbing elbows with pro road racers and bike owners, and working with our road race directors. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com AHRMA trophy and awards steward wanted to help see that race winners get the goodies they have won. Most of the time they do, but some slip through the crack and end up helter-skelter at times. The system could use a steady hand. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

AHRMA Dirt Track volunteer needed to work with David Aldana, our DT Race Director. Duties are to help David with assorted business items. A passion for the sport is required....and some basic business skills. The hours can be as much or little you are comfortable with. Who knows, working with Motorcycle Hall of Fame member David Aldana may help improve your lap times. Our DT program has much unrealized potential. email your interest to dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Making History Cecil Sandford made history as the first rider to win a World Championship riding an MV Agusta. Now, at the age of 91, he is motorcycling’s oldest-surviving World Champion and still has vivid memories of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-

ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer. Ride on... Herb Wolff 1948 - 2019 Herb on his MotoGuzzi CHP bike

Herb on his bike Rickman Triumph at Rattler's Run

On December 28th, 2019, after a long battle with cancer, the Northwest region of AHRMA lost our dear friend Herb Wolff. Herb was a remarkable man. He was a Vietnam veteran, a CHP officer, and a teacher. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved motorcycles. He raced flat track and motocross on big Triumphs, and he was a legend on his rigid Matchless trials bike. After the races, he was the life of the party, regaling us with tails of his years in the CHP, his involvement in the television show CHiPs, flat tracking with the likes of Eddie Maulder, and hunting and fishing trips with his son Aaron. Herb also loved to talk about his daughter Corrine’s amazing hunter/jumper whose nickname is Herbie! Corrine didn’t name him that, the horse had that nickname when she When Herb no long felt he could got it. Herb got a big kick out of that! balance on his two-wheeled street bikes, he bought himself a Ural. Herbie was a big guy with an even bigger heart. If anyone needed anything, he was first in line to offer help. He loved his children, grandchildren and his wonderful girlfriend, Joyce. He had pictures of them prominently displayed throughout his home. He also loved his cat, naming her Jerk for some reason. He told me he was worried about her because the only person she liked was him. But Jerk is safe with Joyce and receiving lots of love. As his friend “good time” Randy Hall said at Herb’s celebration of life, “It’s like the star on top of the Christmas tree just went out.” The world will be a darker place without Herb in it. God Speed, dear friend.

Very nice barn find motorcycle! that sports an earlier repaint on the tank and fenders. This old girl is how you like to find them with all of the dust and grime that one would expect from an original old rider. After sitting for many years, the engine and transmission have been serviced and all fluids have been changed out. The 61ci EL Panhead engine sounds good and starts easy but obviously has had some time on it before being set aside for its long sleep. Don’t miss out!!
