Le Mans start at the Barber Vintage Festival - Gregory Glevicky (1C) & Joe Koury (357) and Cindy McLean (022) just out of frame, but always near by to help me out of an AHRMA MAG jam.

Don't you just love the Le Mans start? For those who don't know what it is: A Le Mans-style start was used for many years in various types of motor racing. With motorcycle racing, when the start flag flies, riders have to run across the track to their motorcycles – which are on the other side of the track – get on, engage the clutch lever, push the bike, pop the clutch and hopefully, HOPEFULLY, drive away to begin the race. If you've been to an AHRMA road race event, you've seen a Le Mans start; pretty much the whole paddock stops what they're doing and heads to the starting line, some to help hold bikes and other to simply root for their fellow racers. Every racer has a cheering section near the person designated to hold their bike. It's really a sight to behold. I for one have never participated in this race, but when I stop and think about it, I'm pretty sure I would slip and fall running to my bike, for all to see, lol!

ASSOCIATE EDITOR Cindy McLean CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Anders Carlson, Becky Hayes, Eric Kraft TOOLBOX TIPS CONTRIBUTOR Joe Koury EDITORIAL CONTRIBUTORS Larry Coleman, Joe Koury, Mark Morrow, Debbie Poole, Kevin McIntosh, Eric Kraft, Darrell Johnson, Merritt Brown, Maurice Laroque-Turgeau, Albert Newmann, Joshua Schucker, Becky Hayes PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTORS ETECHPHOTO.COM, Amy Jacques, Bobby Hedge, Kevin McIntosh, Sarah Lane, Danny Deadmore, Eric Kraft, Joe Koury, Maurice Laroque-Turgeau, Petr Hájek, AMA Hall of Fame, Gary Van Voorhis, Don Hall, Newell Family, Sharon Bean, Lorena Walker

Over the years, I've seen a few of these Le Mans starts and every one of them is exciting, different and kind of like putting together an issue of AHRMA MAG. For one, you need a solid bike to ride... and for me, that's content, solid content from you, my fellow AHRMA

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES ahrmamag@ahrma.org

members and friends. Be it a National/Regional event recap or a great story untold... it's really critical to the success of AHRMA MAG. Then, someone has to hold the bike and for me, that's a solid editor. Thank you, Joe Koury and Cindy McLean, for all you do in keeping the content sailing in the right direction. It is really easy to get off course with words and when they are in print, there is no going back. So then, with your bike set and the flag flies, you have to hoof it across the track, in your leathers, slippery boots and more often than not, it’s hot and uncomfortable. For me, this is managing the advertising. The process is fraught with peril, but also exciting. I love talking about AHRMA and the opportunities advertising within AHRMA MAG holds, but not everyone is interested and sometimes just can't be bothered. Even if they were, life has lots of distractions. Every conversation is different, like every track surface, I just try not to fall. Ok, you're on your bike... you've made! Now it's time to push, push, push, and for me, that's push content onto the pages of AHRMA MAG... just keep pushing those pixels around. POP! There goes the clutch, or for me, the "creativity." Hope it doesn't fail me now; gotta race to run... or should I say, a magazine to get done. Either way, let's have some fun! AHRMA MAG Editor - RR #233 ahrmamag@ahrma.org

2020 - Change is in the Air A new race season is upon us and, as AHRMA members, we have a lot to look forward to in 2020. The tracks have been secured and schedules posted, so it’s time to get those bikes ready and travel plans formulated. Our Road Race series kicks off with a “bucket list” track for many: Laguna Seca in February. Dirt Track returns to the indoor Short Track at the Morgan County Celebration Arena in Priceville, AL, for the season opener in January. Also, in January, our Motocrossers head out to Arizona Cycle Park just west of Phoenix for Round 1. Cross Country gets underway in March at the annual White Lightning 2-day in South Carolina as our Trials series begins at Motoventures in Southern California, also in March. Speaking of Trials, as many of you know, I have a background in trials including competing in USA Nationals Championships, World Championships, Scottish Six Days, Trial des Nations, etc., in the 1970s and 1980s. Given this experience, I don’t think all AHRMA members realize what an opportunity we have with our Trials program. These are fun filled, laid back events that highlight the bikes and techniques of the past while still providing exciting competition and skills development for those inclined.

Many AHRMA Trials run in conjunction with other events to offer crossover between the disciplines. And there are some very spectacular venues, such as the annual event at Donner Pass in Northern California which has hosted everything from AHRMA to National and World Championship events. Also, there are classes for everyone with Novice, Intermediate and Expert designations. Machine eligibility has been relaxed in recent years so that almost any classic or vintage bike has a place. And there are many “home-builts” too! So, what do you have in the garage?

New for 2020 are Youth A, B and C classes. Basically, there are no age restrictions in AHRMA Trials so any youngster who can navigate the loop and make a legitimate attempt at the sections on a 125cc or less air cooled, drum braked, twin shock bike is welcome. This one-year test was implemented to explore the viability of getting youngsters interested in owning, restoring and competing on vintage machinery in hopes they would become the future of AHRMA and keep the organization going for decades to come. So, I hope see some new faces giving Trials a try this year. No experience required, but we will endeavor to have more clinics like the successful Steve McNeal Trials School a couple months ago at Barber, to give members a chance to fast-track their learning curve. So, check out the calendar and come see what you’ve been missing – who knows, maybe the bug will bite?! See y’all at the races…

We have the Best Job in the World! I am questioned often about what I do for living. I explain: providing marshals for road racing at multiple tracks with Flagging by Faynisha, LLC (FBF). I just get many nods, and that is cool without them really understanding. I then tell them Tony and I are Roadrace Directors for American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA). Have you ever tried explaining those duties to a non-racing fan? Deer in the headlights reaction comes to mind. This brings to mind what AHRMA is to me. AHRMA is not a job, it is a family. Just like all families, not everyone always gets along. AHRMA is like siblings - I can talk about them, but do not let an outsider attack or there will be problems. It is a family where competition is fierce on the track and yet

helps anyone who needs it in the paddock. From the time I first started in the sport until present day, I am still amazed how racers have such rivalries on track and then help repair each other’s bikes in pits so they can go race one another again. AHRMA is a group of members, management, board of directors, trustees, volunteers and racers who love getting together at racetracks all over the country. Without members and racers, AHRMA would not exist. Without management, trustees and the board of directors, members would have no direction. Most importantly in my eyes, without the excellent volunteers traveling all over the country doing what they love, there would be no racing. Volunteers who are there for the racers no matter the weather, doing their jobs. Marshals on the corners, start, hand scorer(s), pit in, pit out, grid marshals, tech, referee, gate attendant, crash truck and some I am sure I have missed, stand out in the cold, wet, heat and sometimes perfect weather. They are there because they love what they do. Other volunteers such as registration, timing, announcers, and race control, work behind the scenes giving their all for the racers. They are not always the most visible volunteers but, I can assure you, they are there working. What do I do for a living? I have the best job in the world. I get to watch great racing and with that comes the best family ever. – Tony and Faynisha Pentecost AHRMA National Roadrace Directors Faynisha: 256.506.6603 Tony: 256. 506. 8254 ahrma@oneracing.org

DON'T DO IT! What a great song... The Band's "Don't Do It." It SO applies to my sentiments about what is going on in MotorsportReg (MSR) these days. Anyhoo, with the opening of race season drawing near we are seeing many of our members wishing to ensure their AHRMA accounts are up to date, which has resulted in a significant increase of members creating duplicate accounts on MotorsportReg. While I've gotten pretty good at catching them as soon as they happen, this unnecessarily increases the aggravation of said members, and my workload. DON'T DO IT! So... if • you are becoming a new AHRMA member and don't already have a MSR account, CREATE ONE. • you have ever been an AHRMA member and you are going to MSR for the first time, and you think you should create a new account? DON'T DO IT! • you can't log in to MSR with your old password, and you think you should create a new account? DON'T DO IT! • you used an email address for your AHRMA account that you can no longer access, so you think you should create a new account? DON'T DO IT! • you want to use a different email address than what you originally used and think you should create a new account? DON'T DO IT! So, to summarize, do this instead: 1. If you are an existing AHRMA member going to MSR for the first time, click on Sign In, then click on "Forgot password." Using the email address or userid associated with your AHRMA account, request a password reset. You will be sent a password reset link - use it, reset your password and then log in. 2. You don't remember which email you used? (Yeah, in this day and age, most of us have 2+ email addresses, I get it.) Email me and we will get you sorted - cindy.mclean@ahrma.org. 3. You no longer have access to the email address you originally used for your AHRMA account? See #2. Pleeeeease. DON'T DO IT. (Don'tcha Break My Heart) (Don'tcha Make Duplicates!!!) Are you ready to go racing yet? Man, I sure am! – Cindy McLean Executive Administrator, AHRMA 26 Jardin de Mer Place Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250 904.477.6987 Photo by: Kevin McIntosh

2020 Schedule is out As you all know by now, the 2020 Off-road schedule has been published. The Off-road committee and I spent hours hashing out details based on complaints and concerns from our members going into the 2020 season. As the 2020 schedule was compiled, we lost a few promoters along the way in an attempt to better serve our members and promoters equally. A hole remains in the East; however, I am working on that and the possibility of adding two additional venues to the schedule. If you haven’t, I encourage you to check out our newly crafted Off-road championship criteria posted on the AHRMA web site (https://www.ahrma. org/news/ahrma-revamps-national-motocross-championship-series/). Our Off-road committee worked diligently to update this and we are open to any feedback; you’re welcome to email or call me (offroad.director@ahrma.org / 256-665-1279). We are all family here and we have to work together to make 2020 a great race season. Anyone who did not attend the Texas Vintage GP event really missed out on what 2020 could look like. Our newly added PV 100 class racing was intense with the likes of Guy Cooper, Terry Caruthers and Ricky ”Gator” Parker rounding out our top three after three motos of bar-to-bar action. With that said, we are coordinating special promoter events at each of our nationals this year; it’s going to be fun! I’d be remiss if I didn’t give kudos to Jay and Renee Huffman for the natural terrain track they crafted out of their amazing piece of property. It was simply a vintage motocross dream track. “If you build it, they will come,” and that is exactly what they did. Truly awesome motorcycles surrounded by equally awesome people creating memories that will last forever. I’m looking forward to the 2020 race season, but already have my eyes focused on 2021, the turn-around year for even bigger and better events. – Tony Paul Off-Road Director (Interim) offroad.director@ahrma.org 256.665.1279

Word from our XC Coordinator - Becky Hayes It looks like the 2020 season will be a good one. Hopefully, the weather will be a little more cooperative than last year. The Spring is going to be busy with 7 events by the end of May. We will start the season in March at the White Lightning, Buffalo, SC. This is always a good event. There will be 4 new venues: Burrows Ranch and Bushey Ranch in CA, Topeka, KS, and Reynoldsville, PA. If you want some really fun riding, Fluvanna TX, is the event to attend. Yes, it is a drive, but worth it. The Leroy Winters Memorial Ride (ISDT type event) is back at Combs, AR, in September. The season will end at Henryetta, OK. Congratulations to the following riders. Moving to Expert: Joe Cole, Larry Warner, James Brad Waddell, Joshua Zerance, Brett Reichart, Adam Flowers, Darel Parsons, and G. Robin Davis. Moving to Intermediate: David Salmen, Kevin Webb, Lamar Zell, Ed Klinger, Kerry Kubena, and Lynn Perkins.

Attention In The Paddock:

Volunteers Needed for the 2019-20 IMS Tour!

AHRMA is looking for club members to bring race machines of all disciplines for display as well as staff the AHRMA booth throughout the weekend. Last year the AHRMA display in IMS Vintage was one of the most popular attractions at the event. Members brought out dozens of bikes throughout the year, interacted with thousands of spectators, and even signed up new members to join us at the track. The camaraderie between members & spectators was epic, not to mention the rest of the show, where AHRMA participants became VIPs gaining early access to the show along with other perks.

AHRMA WILL BE REPRESENTED AT SEVEN STOPS ON THIS YEAR'S TOUR: MORE INFO ON THE 2019-20 IMS TOUR CAN BE FOUND HERE: http://www.motorcycleshows.com/

Display bikes will be expected to be dropped off on the Thursday afternoon or Friday morning before each event and picked up on Sunday evening at the closing of the event. Detailed instructions will be given to members who volunteer to bring display bikes. Creative folks with ideas on how to best present AHRMA's mission are welcome to share their input. Those who bring race bikes to display will be given an IMS display badge as well as two complimentary guest passes for the show for friends or family. This is a great opportunity for AHRMA to spread the word of the excitement surrounding vintage racing. It is also a great opportunity for members to meet new friends & enjoy a fun and exciting weekend surrounding the wonderful world of motorcycling! Please reach out to the IMS Vintage coordinator, Brady Walker, to confirm your involvement or ask any questions: info@bradywalker.com 310-980-7129

3 WHEELING THRU THE LARRY COLEMAN REMEMBERS STORY BY: LARRY COLEMAN / EDITED BY: ANDERS CARLSON

I’ve been blessed with a very fulfilling life. I started racing sidecars while stationed with the Air Force in Germany in 1969. Initially, I was a passenger, but eventually graduated to driving my own outfit. I’d been riding street sidecars, so I was familiar with how they handled and why driver and passenger have to be dialed in as a team. It took a few races, but I picked it up quickly. I raced Hockenheim and the Nürburgring as a passenger and later as a driver. There is no question that my time as a passenger made me a better driver. I believe it’s something to be encouraged. Upon discharge in 1970, I stayed in Germany as a civilian because I wanted to continue racing. I bought my own sidecar with Haral Carlin, also an American Airman, joining me as passenger. We raced together until I returned to the states in 1973. As sidecar technology improved, I had to learn a lot and adapt to changes: more powerful engines, different tire sizes and frame improvements. I went from an air-cooled 500cc BMW to a 500cc triple Kawasaki, and then to a GT750 Suzuki and finally, a 750 TZ Yamaha. Each engine had a steep learning curve, along with chassis and tire changes. I never stopped learning. Regardless of changing machines and technology, the one constant is the teamwork between rider and passenger. That's me in 1969 second from left getting ready to attack the Nurburgring as a passenger. This was the first year I rode as a passenger and then advanced to my own outfit as a driver the next year.

DECADES Upon returning to the U.S., I discovered that sidecar racing was taking off pretty well, so I kept pursuing my passion. With Wendell Andrews as my passenger, we imported a state-of-the-art chassis from England, and then had Ron Grant build us a motor. We ended up as two-time AMA Pro National Champions in 1976 and 1977. We even took the outfit to New Zealand in 1976 and participated in the Marlboro Series where we finished second in international competition. At the end of 1977, we parted ways. This led to Mark Bevins asking me to pilot his TZ750 Yamaha-powered sidecar. The result was my third title in 1979 and the development of one of the most leading-edge sidecar racers for the time, the Kal Gard Special. We even made the cover of Cycle News when we won the Long Beach GP invitational in 1981.

Land Speed Racing at Bonneville: Myself and Warren Ryan Photo by: AMA Hall of fame

I stopped road racing shortly thereafter and in 1987 I went to The Bonneville Salt Flats to watch my old friend Bob Bakker race his land speed sidecar. Bob had been a competitor in road racing and became my sponsor and mentor at Bonneville. After spending the week on the salt with him and passenger Warren Ryan (who later became my passenger at Bonneville!), I was hooked. I went home and contacted my friend and fellow sidecar road racer, Mike Taylor (owner of Barnett Clutches), and suggested we go in on a Bonneville sidecar. We commissioned Bob Bakker to build the bike and were sponsored by Suzuki with their GSXR motor. In 1988, we showed up at Bonneville and set a record right off the trailer. For the next couple of years, Mike and I raced and continued to set records. For the 1990 season, we rebuilt the sidecar into a streamliner. The SCTA was a bit nervous about having a passenger on the streamliner, so I raced it solo. I achieved my best speed of 174 MPH, a record that stood for fourteen years. I continued racing at Bonneville, riding bikes built by Bob. In 2012, Bob retired from racing and that was the end of competing at Bonneville for me, too. I continued going to the Bonneville 16

Motorcycle Speed Trials and worked the event as an announcer. Plus, the last two years, I’ve been a crew member for a sidecar streamliner driven by a friend of mine from Germany, but that’s a whole other story. In 2010, I was fortunate enough to be inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame. I’m glad to see sidecar racing is experiencing a resurgence of interest, and I'm grateful to have played a significant part in it. This brings me to AHRMA, and this is where things get really fun. My sidecar career means I am actually better known in Germany than here. So, in 2012, I was invited to a classic sidecar event at Hockenheim, Germany, to participate in parade laps. I called my former passenger and friend, Haral Carlin, and by coincidence, he mentioned he’d be there with his wife on vacation and, by golly, they’d meet me at the track. I mentioned

youthful days. It’s great fun and I can’t wait to get a few races in for the 2020 season. I’ll race the west coast events for sure with AHRMA. It is pretty spendy to chase the series from the West Coast to the East, so I will do my best to attend events. Sadly, we won’t be able to race at Laguna Seca, since I’m working the IMS shows in Chicago. Laguna was a pivotal track in a couple of my championships. My career in the aftermarket motorcycle industry means my hobby is also my job. Seeing a person racing sidecar for the first time is a bit amazing. The "special something" of sidecar racing is the teamwork it takes to get around a race track successfully. There’s a great deal of satisfaction in working as a team to get dialed in enough to win a race. I was very lucky during my career to only have three passengers. We raced together for years, communicating and working in concert to win. Like I said before,

I’m a lucky man.

this to my sponsor who’d graciously prepared a machine for me to race. Their response? “Well, we must get some leathers for him and put the old team on the track!” Needless to say, we had a ball and it really re-kindled my love for sidecar racing. Getting back on the track with Haral was great. It was like we never missed a beat. This planted the seed for the new sidecar outfit. I’d been attending AHRMA races for some time to support the sidecar class and was doing color commentary with the announcing staff, so I was very familiar with AHRMA. As soon as I returned from Europe, I asked Bob Bakker to build me a chassis and Bill Becker of Becker Moto Works to get it running. In 2019, the bike was finished and my first call was to Haral to see if he was interested in riding. To say the least, he was enthusiastic and ready to go. He flew out to Utah this year and it was just like old times. I raced with another passenger at Buttonwillow to qualify for Barber and finally, in October, we were off to Leeds, Alabama, for the AHRMA Vintage Motorcycle Festival. Haral joined me for the huge sidecar field at Barber, and we finished second in class both days. We were beyond thrilled to finish and be back on the track; just a couple of old boys having a great time and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere of Barber. To me, the Coleman/Carlin team is a perfect example of what AHRMA is all about: racing old school machines in a relaxed environment while remembering

DOWN TIME AHRMA

MARK MORROW MOTORCYCLE HEADS SOUTH TO RACE WITH FMRRA | FLORIDA ROAD RACING ASSOCIATION Had a blast this weekend racing with FMRRA at Palm Beach International Raceway! Learned a new track, met some cool people and raced against some different competitors. FMRRA has a very refreshing approach, with a premium put on keeping racing affordable with spec fuels and the majority of the classes not allowing much in the way of motor mods. Their new-for-2020 vintage classes are a good start and only need more people to show up for them to get more specific. They utilized very fair performance indexing to get people racing against bikes that had similar performance, even if it wasn’t necessarily “period correct.” The timed qualifying was AWESOME, and I not only enjoyed the experience but really appreciated being gridded next to people of similar lap times when I was in the 25-bike Formula Twins race. I originally planned to do the Grand Corsa 12-lap money race on the hybrid, but my times Saturday weren’t that good, and my body was complaining about not being in shape, so I opted out and just did one sprint race on each bike. My races were 14 and 17, so I had a lot of free time during the day to spectate and help my teammate Eric Lukehart. Eric seized his RS125 in practice (temperatures were 20 degrees cooler that day and he didn’t jet up enough) and wanted to park it, but I convinced him that we could easily repair it at the track with what he had on hand – and we did. We pulled it apart, found some light smearing of aluminum on the piston and cylinder wall and I went to work with my magical emery cloth. While we were working on it, Eric Watts and Coleen Colleen Urmson Watts were out racing in the Grand Corsa Moto 3 race. We enjoyed hearing the commentator (who was awesome by the way!) giving some blow-by-blows about Eric’s battle with Adrian (sorry I can’t remember his last name) also on a KTM. Eric ended up just barely beating Adrian and judging from the commentary afterwards, I can’t wait to see the GoPro footage! We hated not watching their race, but we got it running with plenty of time for race nine, Moto 3 sprint. Eileen Morrow used her new Spree pit bike to show me her favorite spectating spot for race nine and we had fun watching Eric, Eric and Coleen blaring around for a couple laps before we saw Eric Lukehart coasting slowly down the back straight with his hand up. Uh oh! We raced back to the pits to be there if he needed any help, but he didn’t make it back until the race was over. It had seized again. Oh, the joys of racing two-strokes. My race FINALLY came up and I was out on the hybrid first in Formula Twins/ Production Twins. They not only combine the classes, but also grid the novices and experts together, with qualifying times being the only thing establishing grid position. So, there were 25 bikes on the grid, and I was in the 17th spot, but there were only eight bikes in my class, and I had no real idea who was and who wasn’t in my class. No worries; the lights went out and I took off! I had a decent start but was very cautious on the first lap, not comfortable being too aggressive racing with a bunch of people I’ve never raced with. I passed a couple until I got stuck behind a guy JANUARY 2020

on a green bike that was holding me up a little. Our bikes were very similar on top speed down the straight, but he had a much better drive off the corners, so I kept catching him on the brakes, but not able to get by. This situation used to really frustrate me when I was younger, but over the years, I’ve learned to enjoy the challenge of getting around faster bikes, and I went to school on the guy and figured out a plan based on his weaknesses. He was slowest in the decreasing radius turn five. Next lap, I pushed hard in the turn before, but ended up pulling the trigger too soon and got balked mid corner. I tried going around the outside of turn five the next lap, but I just came up a little short. Finally, I got smart and backed off just a smidge coming out of turn four, giving myself the space to hit turn five at full speed and made the easy block pass going into turn six. I immediately gapped him, but the white flag came out just as I saw another rider pop into view ahead. I cut the distance in half on the next lap and figure I likely would have gotten him if it had been an eight-lap race. But overall, I felt pretty good about the contest. I haven’t checked times or anything but was told I finished fifth in class and had hit a 1:30 during the race, three seconds faster than my qualifying time! I had a short break before race 17 to get the GoPros and transponder switched over to the trusty RD. Based on qualifying times, I felt pretty safe about winning my class, but really wanted to win the overall too. Only problem was that John Turner was there on his GSXR600 running in the “Super Vintage” class. We weren’t actually being scored against each other, but racers are racers, and I gave it my best shot! I got a great launch and had a flatly decent wheelie off the line that I converted into the holeshot. I knew John would crush me once we hit the straight, so I pushed hard trying to open a small gap. It was to no avail as John came rocketing by the first time we hit the back straight. I kept pushing every lap and at one point even gained some ground, but he was just cruising around and was never in any real danger of being passed. I won my class and finished second overall, so I really can’t complain! I couldn’t do this without a lot of help from my sponsors: Scott Clough Racing, VO2 Leathers, Worldwidebearings, Retrodyne, Traxxion Dynamics, Tony Doukas Racing, Vintage Specialties, Continental Race Tires, Stickboy Racing-Bridgestone Race Tires, Hinson Clutch Components, Moto Tassinari, FAST from the Past, Economy Cycles, THR, Sprocket Specialists, Pit Bull race stands, Millennium Technologies, Cycle Gear, Team Capitol Powersports Yamaha, The Bike Guy, Keghunter Racing Team, Wink’s Bar and Grill Next up:

Brandon Glenn Post Vintage MX

AHRMA National Vintage MX and Post Vintage MX

Donie, TX November 9-10, 2019 By: Albert Newmann Photos: Bobby Hedge Residing in the landscape of what is referred to as East Central Texas is one of the best-kept secrets of the vintage motocross racing scene. On a private family ranch, Jay Huffman and a team of friends and family have constructed a specific vintage facility over the past two years. For this weekend, the rest of the country was presented a regional secret. The national finale event could not have picked a better location to cap off the year and rubber stamp many national championships for the Preston Petty National Vintage and Race Tech National Post Vintage Motocross Series. The ranch features rolling hills and a sandy loam mixture with a nearly stereotypical Texas backdrop of cattle roaming amidst oil and natural gas wells. With over sixteen different states represented, the competition was stiff and the Texas hospitality was working overtime. With perfect fall temperatures and clear blue sky, the racers could not have asked Mother Nature for better conditions. For most national races in the region, the first race of the day will typically kick off with one of the power-packed age group classes, and for Saturday it was the 50 Plus Intermediates and Experts. Immediately rocketing out of the first rubber band snap, it was local North Texas native, Bobby Hedge, winning the battle to the first turn. The Intermediate soon had his hands full with fellow Texans Gary Davis and Darren 22

Terry, but managed to hold both off to take the first moto win. The second moto did not go as well for Hedge, as it was Darren Porter aboard a small-bore Honda CR125 taking the moto win. Gary Davis and his steady 2-2 finish won the overall in the Intermediate group. With the Experts on the gate, there was high anticipation to see Guy Cooper and his Penton 250 in action. However, mechanical difficulties prevented him from completing the first lap, and it was Floridian Greg Barnes taking the Expert group with two first place moto wins. The next race up was one of the best battles of the day, as it was our 60 Plus Intermediates featuring multi-year champion John Fedor defending his title against a deep gate. Fedor pulled the holeshot in moto one and took an early lead. However, closing the gap was Kawasaki-mounted rider Jack Kyzer. On the third lap, Kyzer passed Fedor in the finish line corner and managed to fend Fedor off the rest of the moto. The second moto, Fedor once again had a great start and easily held off challenges from both Kyzer and Peter Marcin. Fedor’s 2-1 finishes bested Kyzer’s 1-3, and for Fedor, it secured yet another national championship for his mantle.

Race three had Florida’s Bill Hobson winning the Sportsman 500 Expert class over Rhett Smith, along with Jon Anderson winning the Intermediate class. Race four saw one of AHRMA’s youngest racers Reed Borgfield secure a national championship on this day in the 100cc Intermediate class. Coincidentally, his father Tim Borgfield had locked up the 100cc Expert class the month before. The same race also showcased some great racing between Floridian Chris Stajdel and Tim Wilkinson in the Sportsman 125 Expert class. Stadjel’s 2-1 finish secured him the win on the day as well a national championship! Race five saw Maranda Anderson make her return to racing, winning the Women’s Intermediate class, and it was Mark Leopold in his rookie year winning the Open Age Novice class and national championship. The most entertaining vintage race of the day was race eight, which featured the Open Age Experts, and was it ever a fast group on the track! The entertaining part was watching Ricky “Gator” Parker race on the borrowed Yamaha 750 twin of Mike Parker, going against some of the fastest vintage racers in the country: Brandon Glenn, Keith Klump, Kyle Kyzer, Phil Reed, and Greg Barnes. Parker and Glenn were in a constant cat and mouse in moto one and

the crowd lined the fence to watch the behemoth Yamaha blast through each corner and straightaway, constantly challenging Glenn on his Honda CR250. It was truly a sight and sound to behold as Parker pushed the Yamaha to its limits. In the end it was Glenn winning both motos for the overall, and Klump managing to keep his Bultaco in the pack to edge out Parker for second overall with his 3-2 finish. Incredible day of vintage racing with over 100 entries, so congratulations to all the winners on the day. What is becoming a South-Central Region tradition is the Saturday night Potluck dinner. The menu was quite expansive, and the dessert table satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth. The pits were alive throughout the evening with fire pits, music and, of course, bench racing sessions reliving racing days from the 1970s to the current day’s racing action. With 150 entries for Post Vintage racing, Sunday’s race schedule was set up to be a long action-packed day. The track crew did an excellent job watering and preparing the course throughout the previous night and early morning hours. The first race of the day featured a fast gate of Ultima 125 and Ultima 250 classes. Once again, it was a showdown between Brandon Glenn, Ricky Parker, and Jonathan Campbell. The trio would battle early in each moto. However, the speed of Glenn allowed JANUARY 2020

him to separate from the pack and prevail as the winner of the Ultima 250 Experts. The Ultima 250 Intermediates had Sean Knaack winning the first moto. Unfortunately, mechanical issues prevented Knaack from lining up for the second moto, which allowed Gary Alsop Sr. to hold off Rick Fisher for the class victory. Race two had our new National Off-Road Bob Bean Vintage MX Coordinator, Tony Paul, lining up on his big-bore Husqvarna in the PV Open Age Expert and putting in a great ride. Tony managed to win the class with a 1-2 score, and in the process had a great race with local fast guy Mitchell Hulsey. Another extremely fast rider making an AHRMA appearance this weekend was Todd Slavik of Ft Worth, TX, going up against the stellar lineup of Hoot Parker, Phil Reed, Greg Barnes, and Tim Wilkinson in the Post Vintage 50 Plus Expert group. In each moto, Slavik had to work his way past both Parker and Reed, taking the checkered flag in both for the win. This group put on some incredible racing with a lot of back and forth action. Race three on the day featured the 60 Plus Intermediates and Experts. Once again, a couple of national championships were on the line for each class, so racing was bound to be tense and closely contested. The first gate drop had Rhett Smith of Pendleton, SC, pulling the holeshot, with perennial champion Bob Bean and local Bobby Kyle on Smith’s rear tire. Kyle quickly took the lead, but by lap two Bean managed his way back into first. The two exchanged the lead back and forth several times, although Bean was able to stave off the threat from Kyle to go 1-1 in a very hard-fought battle, securing yet another national championship. The Intermediate group left on the second gate drop, and the showdown of Mike Cole and John Fedor was in play for this championship. Cole and another local Texas fast guy, Edward Hays, both worked their way up

professional Guy Cooper and other national motocross legends from the past, such as Dennis Daft, Clay Hoenshell, James Adams, Stuart McAvoy, Rodney Wiginton, and the pesky Gator, Ricky Parker. It was a three-moto format spread over two days, and each moto the track was lined with racers and fans to enjoy incredibly tight racing action of screaming small bores from top to bottom of the lineup. In the end, it was Guy Cooper with a 1-3-1 finish standing on the top step of the podium. Local fast youngster Taylor Carruthers placed second with a 2-1-5 finish, Ricky Parker placed third with a 4-4-3. Clay Hoenshell had a DNF the very first moto, but his DNF-2-2 finish was not to be ignored, as he put in a legendary effort to force his way back into the conversation. Proceeds from this race, along with a large number of donated auction items and personal monetary donations went to the cancer support group “Racin’ for the Cure.” They were presented a check for $6,400 resulting from efforts driven by Antique Twister Racing and the

Texas Vintage Grand Prix supporters. All the national AHRMA motocross racers were able to experience one of the finest facilities in the country for vintage and post-vintage racing. In addition, they were able to see how a grassroots group of vintage enthusiasts were able to pull together to build this facility and execute a race to rival even those put on by professionally run facilities anywhere in the world. The entire Huffman family and all the supporters of this vision are to be congratulated for coming together and showcasing how things can be done when we all contribute. The list is a mile deep for those of you who made this event so special. Cannot wait to return in the future for another epic weekend! RickyParker 100cc Race

quickly into the expert group, putting separation on defending champion Fedor. Cole went on to win the day’s overall with a 1-1 and Hays’ 2-2 put him in second, while Fedor finished third overall. Cole secured his national championship and gave notice to the experts that his ride will most likely have him competing with that fast group in the coming year. Race five pitted many of our Novice riders together on one gate. Once again there was some great racing within this mixed group of classes and racers with notable rides from Cody Barrow, winner of the Ultima 125 Novice, James Damuth, winner of the Ultima 250 Novice, Dave Wessling winning the Ultima 500 Novice, and the highlight class being 60 Plus Novice with John Mathewson, Billy Cole, and Elton Smith exchanging positions each moto. But it was the 3-1 finish of Mathewson beating out Cole and Smith for the win. Race eleven had the much-anticipated showdown of Bill Hobson, Joel White, and Steve Tomlinson in the Grand Prix 250 Expert group. Hobson, the Eustis, FL, native, was on fire Saturday, and locally, White is well known for his incredible speed. Each moto, the two were within several bike lengths of each other, but Hobson and his Honda CR250 were just unbeatable, as Hobson jumped out front each moto and never let White make a pass. The blazing speed of these two riders kept the crowd entertained. Also on the gate were our Grand Prix 250 Intermediates, and with an inspiring ride, local Claude Cutshaw of Allen, TX, found himself near the top in each moto. However, this class was loaded with talent from top to bottom. John Fedor was able to work his way through the packed class each moto, and by the end of each race was able to maneuver past Cutshaw, Jefferey Blackwood, Brady Dickens and a host of other talent, to take the win. But the prize of this class went to Keith Canfield, riding just well enough to lock down the points lead for the national championship in this class. Great racing throughout this group, and for the day all races were close, with lots of action on the wellprepared track in Donie, Texas. The highlight race event of the weekend was the special fundraising event of 100cc racing – the Wendi Jordan 100cc Memorial Pro-Cup. What could be a sign of things to come, this race was comprised of 100cc Yamaha and Suzuki Post Vintage race bikes. With seventeen riders, the gate was packed. The Vintage 60+ Expert class was won by Paul Wawrynovic on a CZ (1/1), Dave Meakem, also on a CZ, was second (2/2) and Jay Danek, on a Suzuki, was third (3/3). The number 147 CR 125, ridden by Stephen Clare, won the Sportsman 125 Expert Class. North Pownal, VT. The second annual Stateline Riders Vintage Classic. Saturday, Vintage 50+ cross country race was won by Jay Lane on a CZ with Denis Poitras on a Can-Am second. Joe Chodnicki’s Husqvarna was third, and Merritt Brown finished fourth on a Rokon. In Post Vintage racing, Matt Morrison led the way in PV 200 on a Honda, with Yamahas ridden by Brett Darrow and Phil Theo rounding out the top three. Sunday was another perfect day for MX and we saw great technical, grass track riding. Billy Burns entered five classes and won them all. Kurt Spoonogle did win moto one of the PV 50+ Expert, but Burns’ Hodaka came back strong in Moto two. Thanks to Marc Bottesi, Vintage 60+ Expert winner, and Don Bierwirth, Vintage 50+ Intermediate winner, for all the hard work in preparing for the event. Some say it’s a bit far away, but if you do come out next year, you will see that it’s worth the few extra miles. 26

BATTLE BY THE RIVER VINTAGE MX NATIONAL @ MMX RACING

The phone ringing over the loudspeakers broke up what WAS a perfectly chosen Led Zeppelin song for the mid-day break in the pits. I cringed just for a moment. Ten seconds later, my phone rang as well. It was Fish, and his call was to let me know the track wasn't in need of water and he was putting final touches on a couple of spots. The last words I heard from him, as I motioned to announcer Steve Thinger to get race 1 called to the line, were, "It's cake - get em' up here!" The last west coast AHRMA National for 2019, had not been scheduled originally for November 10th. Nor had it been scheduled for Jerrad Fisher's (aka Fish) MMX Racing facility. It was actually a makeup date, to cover for SCRU, who had unfortunately needed to cancel their Mike Lightfoot National in October – a race I personally had been planning on attending, as it was always a great event. Thus, when Kelly Shane, newly appointed NW Regional Off-Road Coordinator, called to ask if we could pull off a weekend double header, I knew we had big shoes to fill. Of course, the answer was, "Sure. No problem." Although, I had no idea how Fish was going to take the news that we needed to rearrange the entire weekend plan, and that it was now a two-race weekend. Fortunately, he was in a good mood when that phone call was made, and we were in business.

The day before had been a great day of racing, with new ground being broken for both AHRMA NW and MMX Racing. Racers had been pretty happy about the facilities and format run for the AHRMA NW Regional. So, there was definitely a buzz at the riders meeting – both excitement and tension. The host club, Original Standard Motocross, was once again handling gate duties, and practice started right away. I was a bit nervous when a few bikes came off track covered with just a little too much chocolate cake for my liking. However, by the end of practice it was clear that Fish had done it once again, and the track was already coming in. Race one hit the line and the gate dropped on what was about to be an epic day of Vintage MX racing. Ed Sims, always looking dapper, and Al Wenzel in Classic 500 Expert, led a field also consisting of Classic 500 Intermediate and Open Age Expert/Intermediate to turn one. That start pretty much set the tone for the day. From there, it somehow just gained pace and quality. By Race thtree, the 250 Experts were ripping the OSMX Vintage track up, with Tanner Kale taking the overall for the day, followed by Gavin Leiper and Marty Burks. Scott Bellicitti rode his way to a win in Sportsman 250 Intermediate with Charels Haines and Patrick Fetzer rounding out that class as well.

Race four included the Premier classes, and Kelly Shane was the class of the field, winning the Premier 500 Expert class. Michael Miller took Premier 500 Intermediate and Debbie Poole was getting smoother and quicker all day aboard her Beezer, taking Premier 350 Intermediate. Race five then saw wins going to Norm Wright for 60+ Intermediate, Peter Jorgenson in Early Sportsman Stock Intermediate. Jeff Mullins flowed his way to a win in ESS 500 Expert. There were a half dozen 70+ racers in attendance, and race six saw Doug Smith power his way to a well-deserved win in the Expert class with Rick Deford getting the nod in Novice. Up until now, things were rolling right along, and the morning's great racing seemed almost routine, with the riders coming to the gate all smiles. Something was definitely different though, as the guys lined up for Race seven. The 60+ Experts were lined up, with names like Turner, Brown, Gerstenberg, Newell, and a host more of fast, sixty-something racers. The veteran racers did not disappoint either. Hard racing went down in both motos. Pat Brown hammered his way to the overall win, followed by Danny Turner and Bob Bellicitti. Mixing it up in the middle of that field were a pair of Open Twins Experts, Marty Burk and Al Wentzel, who were not about to let the "other bikes" steal the whole show. But it was Marty who got to stand on top of the podium when it was all over for the day.

By race ten, it was clear the track conditions were ideal for fast laps and bar-to-bar racing. So, the Novices had their turn. In Sportsman 250 Novice, Cliff Woodruff, bested his buddies Gary Moore, Cy Yee, and Michael Carpenter, who once again proved he was the Iron Man. His number 330 raced so many motos that the scorers came over to the start area to verify he was actually in all those races! Not to be outshone, 60+ Novice was going at it hammer and tongs. Dennis Rhodes and Robert Barnes went 2-1 in moto one but it was Rhodes who turned the tables in moto two and earned himself an overall win, as well as his last ride as a Novice. He was greeted at the podium with news that he will be racing as an Intermediate in 2020. Congratulations and condolences were both heard from the crowd. Russell Heck also found the MMX soil to his liking, with a win in Classic 125 Novice. In total, a dozen novices went out and raced hard, a good showing for sure. I would like to say that Original Standard and MMX conspired to make Race 11, the final race of the day, the best. Things like that just cannot be scripted. But somehow, the Vintage Moto gods smiled on us again. Local NorCal hot shoe Danny Turner had already battled George Amaro (92Q) and Gary Gronow (G67) battle for position with Pat Brown all weekend. Technically, they weren't even in the same class for this one. But apparently, they didn't get the memo because when the gate dropped, it was the same duo who flew to an early lead in the second moto. It looked like another DT/PB show was about to unfold, for a few laps anyway. The two leaned on each other hard and lap times were dipping into new territory for the day. However, there were a pair of Jorgensens, one aboard a John Deere painted Husqvarna, about to make their names known. The Marysville, CA, fans were lined up on the front straightaway, as David Jorgensen began to inch his way closer to Turner and Brown. It was Brown, who blinked first, and Turner slipped past. By the end of lap three, Jorgensen was within striking distance to the big twin of Brown. He made his move to second overall on the race track, which was also second in Sportsman 500 Expert. At this point, it was youth and exuberance vs. experience and treachery, with things getting really interesting. As the CZ led the Husky past the white flag, no one had any idea who would win, including the two putting on the show. At the line, it was David Jorgensen nipping Turner for the overall with the other Jorgensen, AJ, bringing it home third. It was a befitting end to what was a L to R: Danny Turner, Pat Brown, Bob Bellecitti and Chett Malito share the perfect day of racing. podium and a laugh for their efforts in 60+ Expert At the awards ceremonies, there were plenty of handshakes and tired, but happy faces. Battles had been fought - won and lost. I normally despise the phrase “they were all winners, but it really did fit this time around.

TOOLBOX TIPS

TOOL OF THE BY: JOE KOURY

I started tinkerin’ with engines at an early age and worked on hotrod Chevys through high school. My first Honda tune-up – on a friend’s CB350 – occurred in 1970. That piqued my interest, and by ’72, I was spinning wrenches professionally in a Honda dealership. I witnessed hundreds of junk repair jobs during my 35-year stint at American Honda as a tech rep and training instructor, learned from valuable mentors and sage, old mechanics along the way. I’ll never graduate from the School of Hard Knocks, and that’s okay, because its knowledge is limitless. I stood around in my shop for about five minutes just ponderin’ and thinkin’, “What are some basic tools and tricks that I could never do without in the shop and paddock?” Here are a few of my go-to helpers, some obvious and common, some less so. 1. JIS cross point screwdrivers and impact bits. Phillips screwdrivers do not fit Japanese cross head screws. Period. They cause cam-out, damaging the screw and the driver tip. Invest in a #2 for starters, replace all the damaged screw heads and start over. You’ll thank me later. 2. Impact driver with JIS #2 and #3 bits for those stubborn-to-remove screws. One pop, and zero foul language. 3. Quality 12-point wrench and 6-point sockets. 12-point box wrenches give you more access in tight confines, reducing the amount of cursing involved. 6-point sockets will not round off bolt/nut heads (same cursing thing). Flank drive is recommended. 4. Reverse taper spoke wrenches save your nipples. Who wants sore nipples, and broken spokes?

TRADE

11. Zip tie gun. A trick, must-have tool. Applies adjustable/variable tension to zip ties, and then cuts the end flush with the zip tie head. No more bloody hands working around those tie ends you snipped off with side cutters. Your Band-Aid stash will last much longer. 12. Heat gun. A must for ball bearing removal and installation. Never use a torch. Also applies needed heat for removal of frozen bolts and studs. I’m thinking bout a holster for mine, I use it so much. 13. .025 safety wire. I use .020, .025 and .032. But the .025 is so much easier to twist than the fatter .032, especially in tighter places. 14. Rubberized gasket paper. Fel-Pro #3157. This stuff is dope. Stronger than paper, easier to cut and less hassle to remove after it’s been baked onto the engine. 15. Mount a small vise in your trailer. Mine is very popular during the weekend. Enough said. 16. Small to medium automotive scissor jack. Swiped mine out of a wrecked Honda Civic back in the ‘70s. Another popular loaner. 17. Flange nut for taps. Tightened down against the metal, as you go, the nut helps keeps your tap dang near square. 18. Pin vise and needle drill index. These items come in handy for emergency jet changes, jet cleaning and jet calibrating.

5. 1/4-inch wobble adapter for sockets. Improves angle of attack; saves the fastener and the tool.

19. Two small jumper wires. Handy for adding a ground or extending a circuit during those difficult troubleshooting exercises. Harness and control those electrons.

6. 1/4-inch t-handle. It’s all about the spin. I’ve had a t-handle addiction for over 40 years. No cure. Grab a 3/8-inch t-handle too.

20. Needle-nose vice grips, small version. These little pinchers have bailed me out many times.

7. Hondabond HT. Best sealer for all-around use. Gasoline, oil and heat resistant. Great for sealing crankcases; easy on and easy clean-up. A handsome gray color to accent your builds.

21. 6 mm Time-Sert kit and a stout easy-out. I’ve restored many a thread at various venues the past few years. This little assortment can save your weekend, or someone else’s.

8. Properly sharpened gasket scraper. I use a grinder to form the angle, and then a flat file to dress a perfectly flat cutting edge. Follow up with a whetstone. Test it on a piece of scrap to make sure there is no fine scratching of the surface. Keep your file and stone handy for touch-ups. CAUTION: Never use rotary Scotchbrite/Roloc pads. These abrasive discs remove metal and destroy machined gasket surfaces. Aluminum’s worst nightmare.

22. Dead blow hammer. The only way to dislodge previously impossible to budge engine castings. It’ll dress up your toolbox too. 23. Cabinet tip screwdrivers. No, all screwdriver tips are not created equal. The cabinet tips are straight on the sides and not flared out like a standard flat blade. These tips will get you into those little bores where carburetor jets live without damaging the casting. And, I swear, they grip the slots better too.

9. Cylinder leak down tester. Pinpoints the leak and determines how severe it is. Compression testers are crude by comparison; only helpful if you have cylinder filling/volume issues (cam timing or worn cam lobes), carbon deposits or bent connecting rods. These testers are the only (proper) tool for evaluating valve and piston ring sealing.

24. Honda jet cleaner. Calibrated, smooth wire rods for cleaning jets. The skinny one is a must for those tiny pilot jets. No more hunting around for that piece of wire that ‘might’ fit the jet. There may be a pit bike or generator in need of a carburetor rescue so 24 and 25 are essential aids.

10. Scribe/pick tool. Handy as an eleventh finger. Poke, puncture, scribe, scrape, dig. Nearly limitless features for such a basic piece of metal, but mostly invaluable as a ‘reach in and retrieve’ tool in tight spaces using the 90-degree end.

25. Mercury engine cleaner. This stuff is magical. Dissolves carburetor varnish and attacks the burned-on oil that’s so hard to remove from cylinder, crankcase and cylinder head fins. Softens carbon deposits wherever they live.

JANUARY 2020

Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker, Louisiana, was home for the final round of AHRMA Dirt Track racing for 2019. The event, named after local racing legend Mike Gerald, is in its 3rd year although this was the first time that an AHRMA National has been held in conjunction with this race. With temperatures bouncing between scorching hot a few weeks before to frigid just days before the event, the weather come that Saturday was anybody’s guess. Fortunately, we were treated to 100% sunshine and high 50s, some perfect temps for racing. Organized by Baton Rouge native Todd Campbell and promoted by Maurice Turgeau of Laroque Motorsports, the one-day event turned out a very wide variety of machinery and spectators, ranging from the Dinosaur Class to modern 450s and topped off with some beautiful entries from the Bultaco Astro series. There was something to satisfy every generation of dirt track fan. Several hundred spectators joined the fun, most making the journey from New Orleans and all along the Gulf Coast, but some coming from as far away as Ohio. Practice started after lunch and the excitement didn’t end till after 10 PM that night. The non-AHRMA support classes were combined, not only helping fill the grids, but opening the event to a broad range of ages and bike styles. By doing this we hope to show these groups how much fun the AHRMA classes and organization is as a whole. As a result, we were able to add several new Pee Wees on the line, a

Gerald Classic Starting grid at the Mike

AHRMA members. In part, this was from the excitement generated by having great, colorful characters from the past attend, like Mike Gerald, David Aldana, and Beno Rodi. Included in the support classes were: Pee Wee, Mini, Mini Mod, 250, Knobby, Twins, Bultaco and Open Pro. AHRMA race one included Dinosaur, Classic 250 and Classic 500 bikes piloted by Henry Sansing, Scott Taylor and Beno Rodi, with the final results in that order. Race two combined Sportsman, Sportsman 750 and 70s Singles. Jimmy Ewing, Ricky Parker and Beno Rodi were seen taking the wins in their respective classes. Race three was comprised of the Sportsman 600 class with Shanon Slocum, Paul Covert and race director David Aldana rounding out the podium for this one. And finally, the Open Class with the win going to Robert Paxton, 2nd Forest Smith and 3rd Jamie Myers. All in all it was an excellent event with tons of local support and the perfect way to wrap up the AHRMA Dirt Track season. In the end we were bombarded with requests to come back and do it up bigger and better for next year, which is our plan. Special thanks to Mike Gerald, Todd Campbell and Baton Rouge Raceway for the warm welcome and enthusiasm which definitely makes us want to come back.

How many of us wrote a report in high school about one of our then-current motorcycle racing heroes? I'll bet a few of us Mil ll an a ewe with did or wished it would be acceptable to. But how many young people today even know the names of these talented pioneers if e r N h e r pa rents, Stephen and Jenn of our sport, or anything about them? AHRMA members who are in their 30s or younger do have an interest in AHRMA history and the history of those who made the sport what it is today, whatever the discipline was in which they excelled. To see that interest, respect and admiration put into a presentation, especially by someone born four or five decades after most of the events outlined took place, is impressive; it is, or should be, an encouraging message to all of us in AHRMA. For a biography project in school, eighteen-year-old Milana Newell chose John Penton as her subject. She researched extensively and created an attractive, informative and concise slide presentation. John Penton is of particular interest to her because, among other reasons, she races a Penton 175 Jackpiner in AHRMA VMX. Milana comes by her interest in John Penton and Penton motorcycle history naturally; English-born father Stephen competed on the Penton Jackpiner in the Welsh 2-Day International and Brecon Beacons 2-Day, both in 1977. From the age of 6, Milana has been riding motorcycles and horses on her parent’s farm near Bend, OR, first becoming competitive on equestrian junior level. Over time though, it became difficult for her to predict her horse's movements due to Milana being deaf. So, as her competitive days in equestrian competition ended, her attention focused on honing her motorcycle skills to eventually compete in regional AHRMA events with her father. SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

2019: New Venues, Great Racing, Good fun. 2020 here we come! BY: ALBERT NEWMANN The 2019 season has concluded, and what a busy year we had. There were new venues introduced with the Circle Bar Ranch Motorsports Park Cross-Country and Motocross events as well as the Cantium Oilman’s Motocross event in Kentwood, Louisiana. Rain seemed to dominate the early portion of the year, but by the time fall rolled around, we witnessed some of the best racing weather ever. This update will feature a few quick notes and a brief review of the regional Cross-Country event that occurred at the Texas Vintage Grand Prix Course in Donie, Texas. Looking forward to 2020! Regional Cross-Country has really started to catch on, and many of our motocross racers are beginning to participate as the amount of seat time of Cross-Country racing has been a big appeal to those of us accustomed to 12-minute motos. The Friday before the National Vintage and Post-Vintage Motocross race at the Texas Vintage Grand Prix course, was our second regional event for the year. The course featured some additional sections which were well received. The buzz of the day was that Parker Fleming, grandson to Bill “Pops” Fleming, and a national motocross racer, came out to race with us. The speed at which Parker ran the course was unreal. It was a real treat to see how fast someone like him can ride through the woods, and it left us with dropped jaws. Several of our AHRMA National Cross-Country champions were in attendance, and another legend in both the Motocross and Cross-Country world, Clay Hoenshell, also ran the course with us. Just an incredible day of great racers and great racing. The Uncle-Nephew rivalry of Heith Parker and Ricky Parker was fun to watch as once again; the elder Parker schooled the youngster around the course in the Post Vintage 200 Expert class. Eddie Parks outclassed the Post Vintage 200 Intermediates for the 40

win in the largest class of the day. Alan Drane was blazing fast, and secured his regional championship in the Historic Open Expert class. It was the Southeast Texas rivalry of Rodney Reed and Jimmy Stark, battling it out for the win in the Vintage 50 Plus Intermediate class. Newcomers to AHRMA, James and Caegan Damuth, both put in great rides in the Post Vintage Open Intermediate class, with James edging out Caegan for the victory. Keith Klump was victorious over Gary Davis in the Sportsman Open Expert class, and David Anderson battled with Husqvarna-mounted Charlie Moore to win the Post Vintage 60 Plus Intermediate class. Nearly 60 entries on a Friday afternoon showed again that this series has good promise for the region, and we will look to add another site for future racing. By the time you read this article, we should have all the regional championships finalized and posted up on the AHRMA.org South Central page, as well as updated on our AHRMA South Central Facebook page. In next month’s issue, expect to see a race review on the Cantium Oilman’s regional as well as the 2020 regional schedule. Stay tuned, as we expect to have even better awards in 2020. Don’t forget, we will be handing out regional championships at Diamond Don’s in early April. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor for the South-Central region, please contact me soon, as we are taking on new sponsors currently. We have a few new, exciting sponsors lining up now, as well as current sponsors already re-upping for 2020. Until next month… Albert Newmann

The 2019 Mid-Atlantic Cross-Country season came to a close in exciting fashion. Two new venues were scheduled for the final rounds, and racers were excited to get a glimpse of what Twilight Farms and White Rose Motorcycle Club had in store.

Twilight Farms – October 13, 2019 A late addition to the schedule, round nine took place in rural Airville, PA, just southwest of Lancaster, at Twilight Farms. This private property is mainly situated in a wooded valley, and combined with beautiful autumn weather, provided a wonderful setting for the day’s event. The course was laid out through the hillsides of the property with many elevation changes, off-camber trail, and flowing single track. The experience was extremely fun and challenging. At one point, the riders were led to cross the creek at the base of the valley, then directed back up the other side of the valley. Many positions were gained or lost on this intense hill climb. The section provided a great vantage point for spectators, who were willing to lend a hand or give the riders some extra motivation with their cheers. Many thanks to the property owners for their gracious accommodations and excellent course. A field of 44 riders took to the course for the morning’s vintage race. Dave Kutskel took the overall win on his Honda followed by Christian Brumbaugh on a DT250. Husqvarna-mounted Joe Cole, in his first race as an expert, took home a solid third. Kerry Kubena, represented the novice riders in strong fashion by securing a solid sixth place finish on his Husky. The largest class in the field, with nine riders, was Vintage 60+ Intermediate. Glenn Hershey overtook Alfred Schnug on lap three to claim the class victory on his Can-Am.

The Post Vintage race saw 79 riders take the green flag in a competitive race. After seven laps, the top five riders were separated by just over one minute. Ethan Waddell and Dan Sharpless swapped the lead several times, with the YZ250 of Waddell taking the checkered flag just 18 seconds ahead of Sharpless’ KDX. Early Open Intermediate action saw Brett Reichart best seven other riders by leading every lap on his KX250. B rett was also the top finishing intermediate rider in the field, and for his efforts earned a black expert stripe for round 10.

White Rose Motorcycle Club – October 27, 2019 Located in Spring Grove, PA, White Rose Motorcycle Club was host to the final round of 2019. Chartered in 1952, the club is well known for its AMA professional hill climb events. Ample parking and a large well-kept clubhouse greeted participants, but the hill dominated the scene. Rain was in the forecast, but thankfully held off long enough for plenty of camaraderie and bench racing (“I think I can make that hill climb!”) the evening before the event. But the rain would not wait long. Overnight, and into the morning, heavy rain and wind moved into the area. With the rain forecast to end by 10:30AM, race director Dave Kutskel and his crew made the tough, but wise, decision to delay the morning’s vintage race until the rain stopped. A local weather station in nearby Hanover recorded nearly two inches of rain during the storm. The course featured many elevation changes, with the riders twice traversing the face of the pro hill climb course (no we did not go straight up!). Tight, flowing single-track through roots, rocks, trees, dirt roads, a short motocross section, and more elevation changes provided the riders with a nice variety of terrain. In the spirit of Halloween, many riders chose to participate in a costume contest during the races, which added some extra flair to the day’s event. A pack of Minions, Pocahontas, Mario (Honda) and Luigi (Kawasaki), Speed Racer, Captain America, Ronnie Mac, and many other characters lined up to race. Beautiful sunny weather followed the rain; however, the rain had left its mark as 34 riders lined up for the Vintage start amidst standing water puddles. As the green flag fell, the course headed straight into the first

climb across the face of the hill. Screaming engines and spinning knobbies signaled that the mud and slick conditions would be a challenge. Harrison Walkama took the lead from Joe Cole on lap two and survived the mud to take the overall victory on his Honda. Christian Brumbaugh, piloting a Yamaha with a Jack-O-Lantern tank, and Cole duplicated their second and third place finishes from round nine. Nick Gatrell and Grant Reichart swapped the lead in the Vintage 200 Intermediate class. Each completed four laps, but the Hodaka of Reichart reached the checkered flag 26 seconds ahead. Ten riders were able to complete four laps in the tough conditions, including a strong sixth overall by 60+ Intermediate class winner, Anthony Long, on a Penton. While mud still remained, the course conditions improved dramatically for the 54 riders entered in the afternoon’s Post Vintage race. Improved conditions were evident as many top riders were able to complete six laps. After a strong showing in the morning race, Christian Brumbaugh rode his IT200 to the overall win while leading every lap. Brian Grove, riding his Husqvarna in a pink bunny suit, finished second followed by Mark Hummel, also on a Husqvarna. Fresh off of securing second overall in the AHRMA National Post Vintage Cross-Country Series, Steve Bowman and his Yamaha IT took top honors over fellow IT rider Charlie Walker in the PV 50+ Expert class. Rylin Pacella and Nathan Joseph were second and third behind Brumbaugh in the always competitive PV 200 Expert class. A special thanks to the sponsors of the Mid Atlantic Region’s events: Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Vee Rubber, and Works Enduro Riders. Another special thanks from the participants to Dave Kutskel and his stellar crew for their dedication and efforts throughout the season. 2019 ended on a strong note with great experiences conquering new ground at these new venues, each of which has been gracious enough to invite the series back for the 2020 season. Make plans to join us next year. The 2020 schedule is available on the Facebook page (AHRMA Mid Atlantic Vintage Racing) and complete results are posted at:

V is for Victory...and alsoVolunteer Can't have one without the other

BY & EDITED BY: BECKY HAYES Help Us Help You 1. Volunteer Cross Country events are run by volunteers – sign up, tech, scoring, scoring tent set-up and take down. Yes, we have a great core group of volunteers, but not everyone can go to every event. We can always use and appreciate more people volunteering. We even provide free on-the-job training. This year, we will have a special need for more tech volunteers. Want to learn more about the bikes and meet the riders? Tech is the place to be. Photo by: Kevin McIntosh

Tech Inspection

2. Bring your membership card. “I brought it, but it is back at the truck,” is not helpful. Don't have a membership? You can get one at sign-up. 3. Fill out the Entry Forms completely including: class, skill level, bike make, model, year, and displacement. ‘Cross Country’ and ‘Novice’ are not classes. ‘60+.’ Was that Vintage or Post Vintage? This is especially challenging when no bike information is listed. No skill level? You are going to be designated as an Expert.

Riders Meeting

4. Bike numbers. Please, make sure the number on the entry form and on your bike match. "24J on the entry, and J24 on the bike" – yes, it does make a difference. "003 on pre-entry form, 3 on the bike" – yes, it does make a difference. "Different numbers on front and side number plates" – yes, it does make a difference. "No side number plates." Try scoring at a muddy race when the front number plates are covered. Yes, it does make a difference. 5. Bike number visibility. As per the AHRMA Handbook, numbers must be 6 inches and letters 3 inches tall. Vintage bikes shall use white backgrounds with black numbers and letters. Post Vintage shall use yellow background with black numbers and letters. A "red background with white numbers" looks pretty in the pits, but we can't read it at scoring. "Black x on black background?" If you are asked to add an x because of duplicate numbers, please, please, use a contrasting color.

Starting Rows

6. Attend the Riders Meeting. It is mandatory. You probably know the speech by heart, but there may be some important information for the day that you don't know about. 7. Participate in the correct race. Vintage Race is for all Vintage, Women, and Novice riders. Post Vintage race is for all Post Vintage Experts and Intermediate riders. This is usually an issue with Post Vintage Novice riders riding in the Post Vintage race, but I have seen... 8. Start on the correct row. Row signs are posted. If you are not sure, please, just ask. Post Vintage Novice on the front row of the Post Vintage race? Yup, it happened. 9. At scoring. When you enter the ribbons, you are in a no passing zone. If you really needed to make the pass, you should have been going faster before you got to scoring. A quick stop and go is required for safety and for the scorers to get your number. Thank yous are always appreciated.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-

ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. Britain’s greatest riders of all time. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer. This bike has been owned by me for approx. 20 yrs. during that time it has been used for dirt riding, but never raced. it is not bent or damaged in any way. it has not been run for 10 yrs now.
