I hope this short spiel finds everyone enjoying the AHRMA MAG pages and, most importantly, a return to racing in your competition-deprived, COVID-crazed, distantly social motorcycle enthusiast lives. Me, I’m just waiting, along with my son, Joe, for the next opportunity to tear up some tarmac. I’ll just go ahead and throw it out there: our current personal obligations and disheveled schedules will prevent us from making any roadraces until Little Tally, in September. We will miss all our racing family up in the Midwest. Have a safe and enjoyable back-to-back for us. Now, back to writing and reading the magazine. You might read the AHRMA MAG once or twice, and maybe go revisit the content on occasion. I, on the other hand, read it at least twenty times—maybe more. I frequently cook indoors and out, some big spreads of food that take either all day, or most of the afternoon. By the time I’m finished, and the food is served, I have no interest in eating it. The Mag is somewhat similar. I’ve been through every fiber of it on my computer screen, to the point where it’s tough to pick it up and read after it arrives. But actually, I do devour it because there’s no online/on-the-screen replacement for the paper in your hands and the images that are so vibrant. But I’m rambling here, so I’ll get to my point. Copy editing is an obsession for me; I want every sentence of every AHRMA MAG issue to be error-free. I tackle words and paragraphs with the same approach as a race engine build: thorough and precise. This includes sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, spelling, abbreviations, contractions, numerals vs. words, caps or lower case, plural vs. possessive—the assortment of sentence-building components and procedures becomes bewildering at times. When I get thoroughly bamboozled, I research the subject or call my daughter, Joanna, who was an English major, and she bails me out occasionally. My other go-to brainiac is AHRMA number 623, Patrick McGraw. I appreciate both crutches. Now to wrap all this up and make some sense of the previous pair of paragraphs. There is so much to review before the magazine heads off to the printer: story text and titles, photo captions, photo credits, contributors’ names. It gets hectic. I know Kevin is also glued to his screen, tweaking the layout, responding to my many 11th-hour corrections. When I did my final review of every June issue page, I skipped the Houston TT article I penned since I had edited it several times during its creation. Ouch! When I received my hard copy and read the story, I found four typos and one sentence that had not been updated. Aarrgghh! My goal was to have a 100% correct AHRMA MAG, and I fell a little short—the engine building equivalent of leaving a bolt loose or forgetting to adjust a valve. Oh well, I’ll get another chance at redemption. I’ll get over it. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the content. We have included a letters-to-the-editor feature: Backfirin’. We’d love to hear from our readership. Let us know what you like, dislike or what you might want to see in future issues. See you in September.

REPRESENTATION or LEADERSHIP? Hello AHRMA, From my perspective as a trustee, being an elected official can be viewed a couple of different ways. On one hand, members in good standing elect someone to represent them as it pertains to the operations of the members’ organization (trustees in AHRMA's case). In other words, the elected official is a person who will acknowledge a subject, investigate the situation, and act or vote in a way that is in the best interests of the constituents. On the other hand, most members expect their elected officials to not only use their skill and experience to address issues that come up, but also use their vision to help the organization improve and sustain a future. A good example of representation is our rules proposal process. Members submit proposals to trustees, members make up committees that make recommendations, and members weigh in by sharing their opinions on the trustees' preliminary judgement calls. Leadership might be when trustees take the initiative to recognize present needs, anticipate future needs, establish goals, craft strategies to reach those goals, and see that the strategies are implemented. AHRMA, as with many other groups, deals with attrition among our membership. We also recognize that some of our most interesting and iconic racebikes are no longer actively raced (along with some of our most interesting racers). They may have become too valuable, and/or those gifted folks who built them, rode them, and kept them going are no longer doing so. AHRMA's trustees, as leaders, recognize these unfortunate realities. As stated earlier, we use our vision to come up with ways to meet these challenges as time rolls on. In order to embrace the upcoming generations of enthusiasts, we are well advised to accommodate what is vintage and classic to them. The dynamics of attrition and an ever forward moving timeline create a unique challenge. What can we do to keep AHRMA's original bikes and riders relevant? Our reasoning is that if we are to have fewer old bikes and members, we could elevate their status to counter the shrinking numbers. AHRMA's successful "Vintage Cup" program is one of the roadrace discipline's strategies to address these concerns. Our off-road disciplines are looking at ways to incorporate that concept as well. We are also considering a stepped entry fee matrix that encourages entries in some of our important, but shrinking classes. In the works right now is another program to elevate the status of our veteran members. Beginning soon, upon membership renewal, each member will receive a vinyl sticker emblazoned with the number of their 'Years of Membership.' Take notice of these badges of membership on a fuel tank, helmet, or fairing at the track, and then offer a tip of the cap to that longtime member who has formed the backbone of AHRMA over the years. As for veteran members, offer a welcome to those who are newer to our club, and then take a look at their classic racebikes. The 2021 Heartland Park 'MotoFest' (canceled this year) may be joined next season by another Classic MotoFest, or two. 'MotoFests' help bring our members together, while bringing back fond memories of the old Steamboat Springs, CO, multi-discipline event back in the day. These types of actions taken by your trustees are known as leadership. – Arthur Kowitz AHRMA Chairman of the Board 386.547.9504 dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

JULY 2020
Hello again AHRMA friends. This crazy year continues to give with the impact of moving-target COVID developments, the ensuing economic damage and now civil unrest. Nevertheless, AHRMA is dedicated to fulfilling our stated primary purpose “…to promote the sport of vintage motorcycle racing” while maintaining economic stability and providing member services in the face of all these challenges. Your Roadrace and Off-road Directors, as well as the individual discipline coordinators, have been hard at work with the various promoters, track managements, state and local regulators, etc., trying salvage what is left of the 2020 racing season. Thanks to everyone for embracing the necessary COVID compliance requirements so we can keep our members healthy as racing resumes. Additionally, these officials are already endeavoring to prepare the best possible calendar for 2021 including several potential AHRMA Classic MotoFest events at high profile venues. AHRMA off-road recently returned to racing at National Trials and Cross Country events in Curt Comer with David Light Pennsylvania and a Motocross in South Carolina while roadracing had Track Days at Talladega GP and a 250GP Bultaco Raceway a few weeks ago. Those who know me, know I too like to ride and race—so, even though I wasn’t able to attend our recent off-road events, I did get to enjoy track time at the Talladega Track Days. A big treat for me was turning a few laps on the wonderfully prepared Bultaco campaigned by AHRMA member Craig Light. The bike is largely influenced by Craig’s dad, David, who along with Grandad have a long history with the brand. Also of interest and enjoyment, was the opportunity to put in many laps on the Zero Formula Lightning e-bike of Chairman, Arthur Kowitz. Thanks guys! One-AHRMA – Curtis E. racing. Our plan is to open up Barber registration and paddock parking after Gingerman. If you have any questions regarding whether or not you qualify, please email ahrma@oneracing.org before you register. There will be no refunds nor credits for this event. Please do not ask if your friends can reserve paddock camping because they cannot. Paddock parking and camping is for you and your crew. If we can keep to that rule, you will have more room in your paddock area. Some may not have seen the new requirements for Barber and Regional Champions. This information is available at ahrma.org under Roadrace Schedule. If you have any questions email or call us. One of the hardest parts of this year was revising these requirements. We want to be fair to all racers without going over our 600 entries per day at Barber. This column is short this month; not much to report until we get back to racing. Just keep yourself updated on policies for each track. You can go to their website and read their policies and procedures. AHRMA will also keep you updated on the website as we get information.
High Hopes
Hope to see you at a Racetrack soon.
Let me start by saying (a great big) THANK YOU to all those who participated and donated toward the Talladega Track Day in June. We had some good times, and a lot of track time. Only one crash in two days. We are very hopeful that the remainder of the year will proceed as scheduled. We may miss spectators, but at least we will be back to

Getting back to racing! AHRMA members, I am proud to announce that we have been getting some racing in over the past couple of months. With Aonia Pass, Reynlow Park, Moto-Vated MX, Bodnar Ranch, and Marymount Nationals, as well as several other regional events across the country. As you know, with all that has gone on with the COVID-19 pandemic, every day is a new day. New government regulations change daily. We are trying hard to keep up with these changes and update our members accordingly. Please make sure to check the schedule often as well as read ALL of your e-blasts as this is the quickest way for us to get information out to our members. Requirements for a National Championship for 2020 have now been reduced to a required best three plus the AHRMA National Final at Henryetta, OK. The Off-road committee thought this would be best for our members during these uncertain times. I hope to see everyone at the races. – Tony Paul AHRMA Off-Road Director offroad.director@ahrma.org 256.665.1279

On the road again... Just can't wait to get on the road again... Seriously! We will be heading north in around two weeks to prepare/pick up the Manxes and the Aermacchi for the trip west to Blackhawk Farms. Blackhawk and Gingerman will be our third and fourth roadrace weekends of 2020 and both Alex and I are feeling pretty antsy to get on the road after staying home since early March. We have our fingers crossed that nothing will change, and that the governors of the states we will be traveling through will not prohibit us from reaching our destinations. To be clear, as "Champagne" Bob McKeever was known to say, "It's not just about the racing, it's about the people." We miss our AHRMA family and are anxious to see everybody as (we hope) our racing season resumes. The event which celebrates our being back roadracing is the first of two back-to-back weekends at Blackhawk Farms in South Beloit, IL, (that's right, back to back-to-back) followed by Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI. While Blackhawk is in the backyard of our Midwest members, some of us will get to experience it for the first time. We will be doing something special at Blackhawk Farms in support of the recent 2020 Member Survey in which many of you participated. This survey will go a long way towards supporting our marketing efforts for sponsorships, advertising and attracting new members, so we thank you for your participation! To celebrate, we will be streaming on Facebook Live as we draw one lucky survey participant's name to receive an AHRMA 10'x10' canopy kit, complete with frame and carrying case. We will announce the time in advance with reminders leading up to the drawing, so live stream with us if you can! In this issue of the AHRMA MAG, we are announcing our first ever online raffle. Through a donation, we have acquired a special Eddie Lawson "Tribute" Yamaha for which tickets may be purchased through the AHRMA Swag store. Eddie has been kind enough to autograph the tank (see pictures in the announcement, elsewhere in this issue), and the raffle page will be announced on ahrma.org as well as through our e-blast newsletter. While tickets will also be sold in person, during AHRMA race events, in order to make them more widely available to our membership and other supporters of AHRMA, we will primarily be offering raffle tickets for sale online. The drawing will be held at the 16th Annual Barber Vintage Festival, Saturday, October 10, 2020, so make sure you purchase your tickets to be eligible for this drawing. By the time you are reading this, you will also have access to the preliminary AHRMA Board of Trustee votes on the 2021 Rule Change Proposals and the online AHRMA Rule Change Proposal Comment Form. Comments and questions will ONLY be accepted via the online comment formwhich will be linked to the announcement of the preliminary votes being available to review. And again, the ONLY comments and questions accepted will be those submitted through the online form. Any comments or questions that are submitted via other methods will be rejected. There are some other very exciting things (as always) that are going on behind the scenes. Let's just say, there's never a dull day with AHRMA!
Just can't wait to get on the road again... The life I love is going racing with my friends ... And I can't wait to get on the road again. – Cindy McLean #022 Executive Administrator, AHRMA 26 Jardin de Mer Place Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250 904.477.6987 8

SHORT TRACK / TT
#44B Mike Collier leading the way ahead of #13 David Aldana
Yes, we finally were able to put bikes on the tracks at Aonia Pass, GA, and Gaston, SC. The Aonia Pass event was held om May 5th, and had a great turnout with riders coming from as far away as Louisiana and Illinois. COVID-19 waivers were signed, and everyone did their “social distancing” when in groups. The Aonia Pass crew did a tremendous job of preparing the track. If you have not raced at this track, I highly recommend you give it a try. The Georgia clay was groomed to perfection and offered some excellent side-by-side racing in the corners. A few multiple winners in the Short Track included Dave Kauffman in the Dinosaur and Classic 500/750 and Henry Samsing coming in first in three classes: Classic 250, Sportsman 250 and Sportsman 600.

The TT at Anoia Pass had more riders and provided some “off camera” excitement when they left the ST and headed over the jumps. Leads changed multiple times and the jump back on to the track (see the photo of David Aldana) offered some tense moments for many. A few winners included Preston Palmer in the Dinosaur Class, Henry Samsing won the Sportsman 250 (the largest class), David Aldana winning the Senior, Super Senior and Seventies Singles classes. Another multiple winner was Charlie Williams in the Four Stroke Super Singles and Seventies 50+ classes.

The pack ready to hit the track
Ah, it warms the heart to be doing trials again—even in times such as these! The Atlanta Motorcycle Club pulled off the AHRMA Redwood Engineering National Trial, with no ill effects! Graham Foster, Harry Heilemann and I assembled eight sections, and we are pleased to report that people answered The Call and came out of the woodwork to help checking sections: Harry Heilemann, John Scales, Steve Candler, Laura and Speedy Davis, Dennis Simoes, Mike Dalmaso and Mike Clifton all contributed to making this a great day. I actually had more checkers than the required eight. Twenty-three riders showed up to go ride in the woods at Aonia Motorsports Park. The youngest rider was Layla Paul, aged nine, and the oldest was Mike Collier (of Mike and Donna fame). The makes represented were a gaggle of TYs, a smattering of TLs, two KTs, a Greaves, a Hodaka, a polished Ariel, a Royal Enfield, a Montesa, and a solitary Cub. One modern ran support just for the fun of it.
Night laps on the short track
Highest scores were shared by Beno Rodi, Stan Cooper and Wanda McCalister. Low score was Steve Glinski who managed to drop a single point, although we are still looking for a picture of the solitary offending dab. Modern Classic Novice, Intermediate and Expert classes ruled the day with six, five and three riders respectively. In all cases, I was told that rock, brush, logs and a muddy Seventh contributed to the fun, and a good time was had by all. This was an almost English trial with the checkers keeping score to help prevent spread of COVID through so many pieces of paper. Numbers pinned on the riders’ chests prevented close personal interaction to help maintain proper social distance. To my knowledge no riders or officiants were harmed in the performance of their duties. Hopefully we will see you all once again at the next event at Aonia Pass, in Washington, GA.

Gaston, SC, was a new event for our racers. The weather could not have been better. Being one of the first races back from the COVID-19 stay-at-home order did not keep the racing fans and riders from enjoying a great event with riders and family. The facility has a large motorcycle complex with numerous motorcycle tracks with a newly designed short track. TT Racing got going mid-afternoon, with Henry Samsing winning the 250 Sportsman and Seventies two-stroke class. The Classic 500/750 was won by Rickie Pollock, with Beno Rodi coming in second place. The Four-stroke Singles class, saw the year-long #2 Charlie Williams aboard a beautiful Yamaha

battle continue between the very competitive and always exciting riders David Aldana on his Honda, Charlie Willams on a beautifully prepared Yamaha, and an exuberant Rotaxmounted Scott Kay. They finished in that same order. David Aldana came out on top of the Sportsman 600, and Super senior classes. Preston Palmer finished second to Rodi in the Dinosaur class. While the sun settled and the track carefully prepared for short traction by Tar Heel NC Track owner, Rick Lovett, everyone was anxious and ready to go. There was no lack of enthusiasm as veteran pro racer John Skinner, on an immaculate Triumph, took the checkered flag first in the Sportsman 750 race, with Beno Rodi second. Rodi again got the better of Preston Palmer for the Dinosaur win. The short track class of Sportsman 250 and Seventies Two-stroke
from L to R: #59 Preston Palmer, #28 Rickie Pollok, #63 Henry Samsing, #2 Charlie Willams, 66 Scott Kay, #27 Beno Rodi, #13 David Aldana
was again successfully contested and won by Rokon-mounted Henry Samsing. This time, in the short track portion of the event, things got a good shakeup. Charlie Williams showed them the way around the now brushed off surface with good even traction everywhere, in the Seventies Singles and Four-stroke Super Singles class. Williams took the lead from Aldana on lap two and never looked back. While the race for second got hotter, it was Scott Kay putting on a fine display of racing to finish second ahead of third-place David Aldana. A huge thank you has to go out to all the volunteers, from the gatekeepers keeping all the signatures and waivers correctly signed, flagmen keeping an eye on riders, the ladies and gents who kept up with and did an excellent job, scoring all the races, to track prep—all of the SEDT workers. Thank you.

The Northwest Region had its first event of the 2020 season at the Slickpoo Motocross Park in Cul de Sac, Idaho, where the Orofino Motorcycle Club hosted a Vintage Trials and Vintage MX on the weekend of June 13th and 14th. Saturday dawned sunny and warm though the rain appeared right on time for the start of the Vintage Trials. Except for Section One, which Trialmaster Matt Parsons routed around, the steady drizzle did not affect the loop and twenty-one Belstaff- and GORETEX-clad riders headed out for three loops of nine sections of rocks, roots, mud and creek bottoms. Many of the sections were under the trees which provided a welcome respite from the rain for riders and checkers alike. All the sections took points from JULY 2020
every rider with the best score of the day being one point by Greg Houchin in Modern Classic Novice, followed by the three-point score of soon to be Expert Jeff Bushey in Modern Classic Intermediate. Southwest Regional Coordinator Luke Sayer escaped from Los Angeles to take the win in Premier Heavyweight Intermediate over Sean Fromhold by five points. Eighty-six Vintage MX and twenty Post Vintage riders awoke Sunday to sunny skies and a very wet and sloppy track. However, after four rounds TRIALS RIDER #38M CHET MALITO of practice the track had dried to nearly perfect conditions. The first moto saw Arei James get the hole shot with her Maico and lead the Sportsman 500 Experts and Intermediates up the 120-foot high start hill. Nevertheless, George Amaro from Willows, California, managed to sneak past her for the lead in each moto. In the 60+ Expert class, Chet Malito kept his KX400 out in front for a hard-fought win. Post Vintage Open Age Intermediate saw Steve Liberty and David Beck split moto wins with Steve taking the overall win. Sean Riddle bested Steve in the Post Vintage 500 Intermediate class.

During my career as a carpenter, it was obvious to me that I could not work with a broken collarbone, so I decided early on that, as much as I wanted to, I would not go racing as a rider. Instead, I continued as a careful street rider and dedicated racing fan and spectator with a particular interest in grand prix bikes and classes. One highlight of many years was the Mid-Ohio AMA Superbike weekend featuring for me the 250 GP championship during an era of annual development and wide distribution by Yamaha of bona fide GP bikes.
All things TZ provided endless fascination and the seed of ambition was cemented by a surprisingly amiable conversation with Bruce Linde in the back paddock at Mid-Ohio. Bruce said, “There is a manual from Yamaha that covers everything. Anyone who can read can run one of these.” Some years later, in 1999, I found myself well enough heeled to just barely afford the purchase of a ’92 TZ250 4DP from a classified ad in Cycle News and only 100 miles away. It would be another 14 years before retirement would allow me the time to really use the bike as it deserved.

In the meantime, this bike saw the track only a handful of times each year in the hands of a succession of three riders, all talented and successful veteran racers whom I was blessed to count among my friends here in Cincinnati. The time and money limitations allowed us to climb a gentle and generous learning curve made gradually easier by the growth of the internet. Forums, email and eBay expanded the reach to a world of enthusiasts and pool of parts and expertise while the bike ripened into a middle-aged vintage status just common enough to find appropriate competition and just exotic enough to remain very special. We will be ever thankful to Yamaha for the decision to make so many TZs for so many years available to so many people to the point that even a carpenter could keep one going reasonably well. Throughout most of the long history of the TZs, Yamaha offered to the public through their dealerships a sanitized version of last year’s grand prix bikes. With the bike we bought, the story that our bike had originally been the spare for Sinichi Ito in the Japanese national 250 GP series, was imported to the US by a returning serviceman and ended up doing a little WERA duty before the rider from whom we purchased it moved up to the next newer 4TW series. Our early years featured rider number two, Bill Atkins, at the inaugural motorcycle event at Barber in ’03 racing with WERA. That was followed by several years there with AHRMA including what remains the bike’s best Barber time yet of 1:39.2 in ’05 while jumping

back and forth between the TZ and his Bears Norton. Bill was also the early engine mechanic and tuning tutor as I learned to source parts, care for the chassis and to start the thing. We decided early on to emphasize reliability with a careful ‘stock’ specification for the tuning. There is surprisingly little suggestion that the power can be improved with porting or other modification. Among our spares, we have several generations of cylinders and ignitions but have found no dramatic increases in power among them. The 4DP chassis is considered to be ‘better handling’ than the subsequent 4TW series, but I don’t know. What we do know is that there are very few better handling bikes anywhere and that a good rider can get a lot out of 78 horsepower in a 240-pound bike. Especially helpful has been our work with Bill Moeller dating from the heyday of his shop, Bore Tech. I was delighted that Bill was equally inspired by the TZ and was willing to share his expertise as we learned the specifics of the 4DP TZs together. I don’t hold it a bit against Bill that, as I encountered the opportunity of retirement in 2014 and looking for rider number four, he introduced me to Gregory Glevicky. As some of you may know, we have had a wonderful 6 seasons together making 7 or 8 events a year. Greg has been very respectful of the bike and his instinctive riding style makes good use of the best qualities of our bike(s) with only the most rare abuse or misjudgment. There are 2 later generations of TZs with up to a 20 horsepower advantage, but Greg has shown what good riding can accomplish on a reasonably reliable bike. hands and our ability to compete successfully with such a variety of machines proved to be extremely satisfying for me even if my spectating has been limited to the pit wall. It has been a real joy to become part of the show at so many great racetracks. I am surprised that more owners do not offer their bikes to promising or experienced riders. The shared work of a weekend has much to be said for it. We have assembled a second bike from accumulated parts and are working on a third engine. We do contemplate the subtleties of wearing out a thoroughbred machine but also believe that they age best on the track. As a mechanic, it is a source of endless pleasure to work on a machine designed so single-mindedly for racing. There is preciously little inclination to question the choices of the Yamaha engineers. There is no better time than this interrupted season to pursue Bill Moeller’s mantra of “meticulous assembly.” 4DP TZ250’s Place in History Our original bike is a ’92. This was the first of the widely distributed 90-degree v-twins (the 3YLs of ’91 were a single transition year; the first v-twin to replace the last of the parallel twins/reverse cylinder bikes). These motors feature a balance shaft and ‘guillotine’ power valves controlled by an ECU with fixed advance curve. The carburetors are flat slide Mikunis with a ‘power jet’ solenoid sitting in separate ‘shrouds’ with minimal ducting in the fairing that results in the lower cylinder running at least one jet size smaller as it gets less air.

As much for convenience as anything, we run Sunoco 110 ‘leaded’ fuel which most notably requires a smaller head volume than the subsequent ‘unleaded’ set-up of the 4TW successors from ’96. It is interesting that just last year, Australia banned all leaded fuel. We saw a small scramble for unleaded heads and ignitions and leaving us thankful that such environmental enthusiasm has not penetrated US racing. We do have a bit of guilt about our distinctive air pollution contribution but it sure seems to clean up when the revs pass 8000 on their way to peak power at 11,500 and, when things are right, no loss of power in over-rev to 12,500. We have seen 78 RWHP on Bill Moeller’s dyno on a late summer day to verify baseline main jetting. WWW.AHRMA.ORG

We have chosen the reliability of a ‘stock’ set-up with careful adherence to component mileage. There are surprisingly few well
accepted modifications to consider short of ‘kit’ set-ups that require vanishingly scarce combinations of special cylinders, pistons, heads, pipes, carburetors and ECUs. It was a real treat, but not a temptation, to look over the shoulder of Pat Mooney on his revival of a kitted 4TW TZ in 2018 as he chased Ralph Staropoli’s Honda. At our level of tune, there is still a decent supply of cylinders and heads offered occasionally while Yamaha continues to offer pistons, clutches and almost everything needed for a crankshaft rebuild. Over the years, we have seen a variety of pauses when some parts (such as the center crank bearing) fall off Yamaha’s parts list before someone in the worldwide TZ community will have replica/reproductions fabricated. These are relatively expensive bikes to run. We roughly estimate that a full 150-mile weekend of racing costs about $500 in consumable parts. We adhere to no more than 450 miles for pistons and not much more than 1200 miles for cranks and cylinder plating. The cylinders can be replated; how many times remains to be seen. We have some on their second restored Nikasil bores. It is my pleasure to document every mile of track time, and to source and install the parts. The chassis is a very successful evolution of the ‘Delta box’ twin-spar aluminum frame concept pioneered by Yamaha with a linkage rear shock and perfectly adequate up-side-down forks. It is hard to improve on either of these units. The same is true of the Nissin brake calipers. Careful maintenance and record keeping, accumulation of spare parts through vigilant market watching, and sharing tuning experience are all great pleasures for me while Greg works on making full use of the great handling.

Sidebar By: Joe W. Koury Mike’s quite a reserved AHRMA paddock dweller; a man of few words. My son and I have certainly built a bond with Gregory Glevicky through the years, racing in the CB160 and 200GP classes. I’d say howdy to Mike when visiting with Greg or working on his Honda. I’ve borrowed a tool or two from Mike and watched for years as he ‘mothered’ those TZs. We finally put together some conversations standing on the grid, waiting to handle our riders’ bikes in the CB160 Le Mans-start races. Very interesting conversationalist and, as a fellow anal motorcycle tech, I respect the man. But the coolest Mike memory for me was last year at Little Tally when he and two-stroke ‘scientist,’ Jeff Henise, hooked up in deep discussions of two-stroke ‘philosophy.’ Now that was a enlightening eavesdrop, trying to soak up all that brain trust. And as you have just witnessed, Mike is a very accomplished and entertaining wordsmith. Gregory Glevicky quote: "Getting to ride these amazing machines is a dream come true. We've now included Mike as a ‘Lost Boy’ (Lost Boyz Racing), whether he likes it or not.”

BACK ON TRACK: Fundraising Fun at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway By: Jim Essaff
Photos by: Scottie Elkins
The racing season started out strong with Laguna Seca, and then Roebling Road Raceway in February. Little did we know when leaving Roebling Road, the next four events would either be re-scheduled or canceled, and it would be more than three months before we could indulge in some much-needed racing activity. Although not an official race, the Talladega Track Days event scratched an itch and also counted as one race weekend toward Barber Vintage Festival eligibility. Although I have been attending races (more off than on) since the late ‘70s, I do not race. But being away from the racetrack was getting hard to deal with. I could only imagine how the riders and officials felt. This is my first season sponsoring the F2 Sidecars, so when the Talladega Fundraiser was announced in support of the officials, I wanted to help as much as possible. After all, they are the ones who organize and make the events happen. More on helping the officials later, but let us get to the weekend! Another first… When coming to prior events, I always stayed with the brother in his RV, so this was the first event where we (Kim and I) were in our own RV and not camping with the sidecar racing group. The gate opened at 5 PM Friday. We arrived a little after 4 PM and to our surprise the trucks, RVs and trailers were already in two lines almost to the road. With a limited number of power spaces and first-come first-served, we were concerned about not getting a hook-up space. Guess who was one of the first in line? None other than that crazy Indian Bus Guy. The folks working at the track had to drive over the grass to get to the entrance building. We had extra paperwork to complete because of COVID, and people in line were practicing social distancing, some with masks and others without. It was pretty hot and humid and there wasn’t much shade. We felt sorry for the crew inside the building; their air conditioning was not working. Finally, it was our turn to sign in and we were able to get a hook-up, so we drove over and started unloading. There were a couple from Florida, a couple from North Carolina, a father/daughter team from Houston, one of those crazy hand-shift riders from Florida and three four-legged friends (Gracie was so cute) we camped with. We did not know any of them, but within the first hour, we felt at home with new friends/family. This is one of things I notice about AHRMA folks. Everyone is family and they help each other. After walking around a bit and finding out where help was needed, I discovered the first causality of the weekend. Five gallons of hydraulic fluid was under someone’s RV. Damned levelers. Did I mention it was HOT yet? Saturday morning was cool and there was dampness covering everything. With the sounds of the track crew sweeping the tarmac in the background, Tony called the riders meeting at 8:30. Again, everyone was practicing social distancing, some with masks, some without. Tony asked me to explain why Kim and I came out to the track. We both sell CBD products, so we wanted to help AHRMA by raffling two products (both topicals for pain, one cream and one rollon gel), with all proceeds going to AHRMA. I explained the cost of tickets and the products being raffled. Someone in the crowd asked, “What if my wife tells me I’m her pain in the a$$?” I wasn’t quick enough, but should have replied, “Then you need to buy her CBD oil as well.”

On to the practices. Finally, I know. There were approximately 60 riders, which were split into four groups. Each group had an opportunity for four sessions in Dan Sokolich the morning. By the third run, I noticed some folks were not going out for practice. Did I mention it was HOT? In fact, we had to continually move the table for our display to keep it in the shade under our canopy, which really didn’t help much. The morning sessions went without any incidents. Rain was forecasted because of Tropical Storm Cristobal, but the storm stayed to the south; however, we did get some cloud cover and some wind, which was welcomed. There were a couple of incidents during the four afternoon sessions which caused a pause—the first was nothing major. Someone spotted a branch on the track, so there was a delay while the branch was removed. The second incident was a lot more serious when the rider of an older BMW came flying down the back straightaway and into a turn too fast. He went sliding onto the grass area and banged his head hard on the pavement. After a few moments, his bike was on the crash trailer and he jumped into the truck pulling the trailer. Coming back to the pits, we discovered it was one of our neighbors. After a couple of minutes, he could not remember what happened and how he got back to his RV, so the paramedics were called to re-evaluate. They suspected he had a concussion, but no broken bones. The bike had a couple of issues and required some repair work to return it track-worthy status. His helmet was pretty scraped up. After relaxing for a while, he was told to start slowly walking around and do some talking. He had some really good jokes! The rest of the afternoon session went without a hitch. There were a couple of people who were not staying overnight and practicing on Sunday, so about 30 minutes after all practices were complete on Saturday, we held the raffle. Kim and I were able to give the proceeds ($160.00) to Faynisha. The first number called was Bill’s, who chose between the cream and roll-on. I remember him saying, “I never win these things.” The second number was called. Guess whose ticket? Yes, Bill again. Someone in the crowd asked how much each item would cost. I said around $60 each, so he offered Bill $50 for the second product. He accepted and promptly handed the money over to Faynisha. In true AHRMA fashion, our neighbors invited us to join them for a dinner of awesome smoked ribs, baked beans, and corn on the cob. Have I mentioned that AHRMA feels like family? Oh, and yes, it’s still HOT. Sunday morning came and a few additional riders showed up for the practice sessions; considering some riders only came to practice on Saturday, there were still approximately 60 riders in attendance. There were another four morning sessions before the lunch break. Kim and I had a seven-hour drive ahead of us, so we packed up and left during the lunch break. Final thoughts. It was an awesome weekend with a lot of practice time for those who came. AHRMA is family. It was HOT. Can’t wait for Blackhawk. Heard some great things are being planned. See you there.

It may seem that a long time has passed since the opening of the 2020 Hagerty National Cross Country series in South Carolina. That was in the “old” days, before COVID-19 wreaked havoc on our lives and canceled or postponed multiple events on the schedule. Thankfully, the series has resumed in a time some are calling the “new normal,” so it is fitting that a new venue kicks off what hopes to be an exciting remainder of the national series. Located in Jefferson County, PA, Reynoldsville sits just south of Interstate 80. While most may be familiar with one of Jefferson County’s major attractions, famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, Reynoldsville contains a treasure as well—at least if you enjoy two wheels wrapped in knobs. Reynlow Park has been a staple of AHRMA Mid-Atlantic’s regional cross country series for six years, and traditionally is met with rave reviews for the course layout, facility, and racing. Reynlow Park easily fulfilled the wish list when the national series sought to increase its footprint in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast region; easy access, ample parking, and history of successful events. It also helps that the town and county welcome the influx of racers who support the local economy. As have past regional events, this year’s national series stop in Reynlow is the major fundraising event for the county park.
As participants rolled in to the event, they were greeted with a picturesque landscape, beautiful weather, excellent parking amenities, and effective safety protocols. National Cross Country Director, Becky Hayes, along with the cooperation of the Mid-Atlantic regional crew led by Dave Kutskel, created a welcoming environment and well-organized sign-up and scoring experience. National Off-Road Director, Tony Paul, was also on hand to represent AHRMA and support the success of Pennsylvania’s first-ever national series event. Good will, good people, good weather, and good racing would continue to bless the event throughout the weekend. A significant portion of Pennsylvania has been impacted at some point, past and/or present, by the coal mining industry. The state is well known for its vast western bituminous and eastern anthracite coal deposits that have been, and continue to be, exploited. While there will always be an ongoing debate of the socio-economic impact versus the environmental impact of the coal industry, there is one aspect of past mining activities that leaves little doubt among those who have experienced it. Former coal mining areas can provide fantastic dirt bike terrain. The Reynoldsville area was a hot spot for bituminous coal mining in the 19th century, therefore, Reynlow Park is partially comprised of reclaimed mining ground that exemplifies the amazing variety of terrain afforded by formerly mined areas.

Trail boss, Randy Marshall, and his crew put in an amazing effort to capture the best aspects of the variety of terrain within the park. In its history as a regional event, the location has become known for the spectator-favorite hill climb just a short walk from the pits. The trail crew made sure to include this popular obstacle in the course as well as a few other climbs and challenges. While each day’s course was unique, they shared the characteristic of incredible single track with elevation changes attributed to the hills, mounds, bumps, and other man-made remnants of the mining industry. The trail crew went to the extreme of creating some freshly cut single track through leaf covered forest for each day. Single track was connected by a few open sections of dirt road and grass track. In general, the course was excellent and wore in very well as each race progressed. A bit of dust was present in open areas but was a welcome consequence of the beautiful dry weather. Vintage Races Racers would get their first taste of the fine course as nearly sixty bikes lined up for Saturday’s vintage start. The great turnout for this race was duplicated for the remainder of the weekend’s event as attendance was top-notch. After four laps of action Saturday, Yamaha-mounted Christian Brumbaugh took the checkers ahead of Brian Grove and his Husqvarna. Dave Kutskel, Joe Cole, and John Fischer rounded out the overall top five with only 18 seconds separating the three. Sunday’s race would end with JULY 2020
Brumbaugh and Grove again at the top of the leaderboard. Wyatt Stoup would overcome problems during Saturday’s race to claim third overall. Tom Bank would lead the novice classes with a strong showing Saturday in 18th overall followed by Sean Keys in 26th overall, while Jay Parkins was the class of the novice field on Sunday. Joe Zito would take the win in the sizable Sportsman 200 Intermediate class over seven other competitors on both days. Several other riders were also winning their class both days. Mike Stivason wrestled his Triumph into submission on the tough course and bested Richard Colahan in the Classic Intermediate division. Patty Butcher overcame a challenge from Pamela Leibgold to take the Vintage Women’s Novice crown back-to-back, and Jennifer Smith would do likewise in Intermediate competition with her Suzuki. In Post Vintage Women’s action, Emily Reichart rode her XR200 to the Women’s Intermediate crown over Polly Grow and Becky Hayes. In Sunday’s showdown, Kelly Pearce would show up to take the win over the previous day’s top three. Emily’s husband, Brett, was equally successful on Saturday by taking the Sportsman 200 Expert win on a Yamaha CT1, but would fall short in his bid to sweep the class for the weekend as Josh Zerrance and his Can-Am took the top spot Sunday. Kevin Marshall was cruising in the lead Sunday in Vintage 50+ Intermediate action, but Steve Harouff made the pass for the lead on the last lap and held off Marshall by a scant two seconds at the finish.

Post-Vintage Races Sixty-six riders made the start for the afternoon races each day. In each, the sight of the number 705 Husqvarna on the line certainly created a buzz, and a general expectation that the overall win will be claimed by multi-time ISDE gold medalist, Fred Hoess. However, the weekend was not kind to Fred as mechanical problems derailed his efforts on Saturday. Extremely fast in their own right, Jeff Fischer and John Ashcraft fought their way through five laps with Fischer edging Ashcraft at the checkered flag for Saturday’s overall win. Lap one Sunday would show Fred leading the pack, but an early flat front tire would allow Fischer and Ashcraft to once again claim the first two spots. Hoess would hold on to finish a remarkable third overall in spite of the flat. Michael Wright powered his Suzuki to both Open class wins in Historic Intermediate action while Penton rider Bob Close and the Yamaha IT of Rick Ketcham swapped positions for one win each in the 200 class. David Mitchell led wire-to-wire in Saturday’s largest class (Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate) over Larry Miller and Mike Zdybak. After a DNF on Saturday, Dave McIntyre took command on Sunday to cross the line first ahead of Mitchell. The Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate class was very competitive, with the finishing order varying dramatically each day. Kevin Marshall took the top spot Saturday followed by Jim Kechisen. Sunday saw Joe Chodnicki and Michael Miller better their third and fourth positions from the prior day by taking the top two spots, respectively. There was a strong showing in the 70+ age classes as a good number of participants made the start throughout the weekend. William Ryburn doubled down with his Penton in the Vintage 70+ Intermediate class with a win both days. Dennis Brown would accomplish the same feat in Post Vintage 70+ Expert while Donald Harless would take Saturday’s Intermediate win over Robert Lisey. Sunday’s Intermediate win would go to Rick Huth on a Honda. In all, the weekend was a great success. Ably returning to action from an unfortunate and unexpected break and strongly executing a first-time event reinforces the commitment and dedication of the national and regional staff, volunteers, participants, and spectators that make this sport amazing. Thanks go out to all those who make it possible, Jefferson County, PA, for access to the amazing venue, and to Hagerty for sponsoring the National Cross Country series. Oozing Enthusiasm: Layla’s First Trial

The first loop is always intimidating
Hi, my name is Layla Paul and I am nine years old. I have been riding motorcycles since I was three. My first motorcycle was a Yamaha PW50. I knew how to ride a motorcycle before I could ride a bicycle. One time, when I was five, I had a friend over and she wanted to ride bicycles. I told my dad that I needed training wheels because my friend’s bike had them. Dad laughed at me and said if you can ride a motorcycle you can ride a bicycle. I laughed, that was so silly of me. Now that you know a little bit about me, I want to tell you about my first AHRMA National event at Aonia Pass in Washington, GA. It was the first Trial we were able to attend this year and I was super excited about being the first kid to ride in AHRMA’s new Vintage Youth Trial class. Bill Gould was our Trialmaster for the event. The sections were super fun I've got to get this yet challenging. done so Dad will paint it Purple I also rode the Trial at Reynlow Park in Reynoldsville, PA. Our Trialmaster was Jacob Ritorto. Jacob and my Dad spent all day Thursday and Friday setting up sections. The Trial was definitely more difficult than Aonia, but I still had a good time as it really means more to be able to complete a section that I originally thought I would not be able to do. I am competing on a 1973 Yamaha TY80. My Dad bought it for me AHRMA’s almost a year ago. TOOLBOX BY: LUCY BOLTON
TIPS
We’ve all been there: tugging on a wrench, tightening a bolt, when the required force to arrive at the proper torque spec suddenly decreases. This malfunction manifests itself in one of two ways: stripped threads or stretched bolt, the former certainly more popular than the latter. It also causes that sick knot in your stomach when you realize that hole is toast and your task just took a turn for the worse. Working on motorcycles made up of aluminum castings produces many opportunities for thread wear and failure. Add to that the age of the motorcycle and number of times it has been disassembled, and the chances for a worn female thread spike (a little COVID lingo there). The other factor involved is poor workmanship, and I’ve seen more than my Anatomy of a TIME-SERT share of this for decades. Improper installation and torquing of bolts just contributes to the carnage. I’ve cringed hundreds of times watching someone tighten a sixmillimeter bolt with twice the torque required. Use a torque wrench until your elbow and wrist are correctly calibrated. Well, we know it’s a motorcycle fact of life, so let’s discuss thread restoration. The most commonly ‘inadvertently extracted’ thread would be the 6X1.00. This always untimely withdrawal of metal appears as a coil of aluminum wrapped around the fastener that refused to tighten. Once removed, inspect the male threads carefully. My recommendation is to replace the part since it has obviously been overtightened at some point. Now, to put some metal back in that wounded hole, an insert is required. The Heli-Coil® is an option, but not the strongest nor the most permanent. The KEENSERT® exists, which is permanent, but it requires a ten-millimeter hole to repair six-millimeter threads. That leaves us with my favorite insert, the TIME-SERT®. The 6X1.00 TIME-SERT® insert OD is eight millimeters. It is a solid insert with synchronized threads; the last two or three threads are cut shallower. The insert also features a flange at the top to control installation depth and rotation. These inserts are part of a kit which includes a drill bit, counterbore, tap and insertion driver tool. The spark plug thread repair kit has a special cutter to square

the surface to the threads for proper spark plug sealing washer contact. Four steps are required: drill the damaged hole with the supplied bit; cut the counterbore; tap the hole; install the insert. I use a thick metal guide to keep the drill bit square to the hole and use a small machinist’s square to maintain proper tap alignment. The insert is then threaded onto the oiled insertion driver tool. The insertion driver tool is rotated all the way through the insert after the flange of the insert is seated in the counterbore. The tool is forced into the shallow threads at the bottom of the insert peening the insert into the casting for a permanent install. It does take some care, measuring and practice to get the counterbore depth correct, and that’s the only tricky aspect to the repair. One other tip to add to this discussion of maimed and mutilated motorcycle bolts and studs: the broken bolt. The most common snapped bolt/stud I’ve encountered in the paddock is a six-millimeter exhaust stud. Prevention is key here. The exhaust system must be rubber mounted at the rear, with no metal-to-

metal contact anywhere (past the actual mounting flange). The cylinder head flange must be tightened evenly before the rear mount is fit or tightened. Use spacers or modify the rear mounting bracket if necessary. But if the stud insists on snapping and cutting into your track time, the only remedy is to drill it out and replace it. I keep spare studs in my trailer along with a good screw extractor or easy-out. Add a pair of goggles to your list of needs should you find yourself flat on your back, drilling uphill. You will need high-quality drill bits—preferably in 1/64 increments—and a good, sharp center punch. (Dull bits can work harden the metal, and you don’t need that.) A plated steel bolt installed in aluminum creates some dissimilar metal corrosion that can be ‘disturbed’ with a good, sharp ball peen hammer whack, and the center punch ‘pop’ will serve that purpose. The next step is the most critical. The center punch dimple must be perfectly centered. A left-hand drill bit should be tried next if you can find one. The bit will catch Drill bit with and grab the stud and, with any luck, squaring guide unscrew the stud without any additional grief. If that fails, it’s extractor time. If you are lucky, the stud will unscrew with the extractor and this is always a ‘win’ worthy of immediate celebration and social media posts. You must drill the hole large enough to insert the extractor half-way into the stud for strength and know the limits of the extractor itself. A broken drill bit or extractor is a major disaster and will ruin JULY 2020
your day. If the stud won’t budge, apply at least 60 seconds of concentrated high heat with a good heat gun at the casting. This can make the difference between success and failure. If it still won’t cooperate, the only thing you can do is drill it out carefully with increasingly larger drill bits until only the thin outside shell or spiral of the stud remains in the hole. It’s important to keep the bit square; an adjacent stud can be used as a guide; four eyes can make this easier. Once most of the stud is gone, the remaining thin metal can then be removed, peeled or rotated out, with a pick tool. Again, prevention is important. Know and observe the torque of fasteners. A rule-ofthumb to follow: never loosen or tighten a nut or bolt with an electric or air impact. I like to feel the nut or bolt break loose and also feel it as it tightens. This takes more time, but haste can make waste. The impact should only be used to spin nuts and bolts in and out. Also, lubricating Squaring the tap threads changes the amount of torque applied. Consult the applicable shop manual for proper thread lubrication. Oiling threads causes more fastener stretch due to the reduction in rotating friction. May you never encounter a stripped thread or sheared bolt, but if you do, a little luck, patience and the proper tools and procedures will restore your bike, confidence, and track time.

We are just small-town brothers with huge competitive spirits. Growing up, our dad taught my brother, Travis, and I how to work on small engines and fix vehicles. When Travis was 18, he acquired his first motorcycle, a 1992 CBR F2, which he still has today. Travis is the true adrenaline junkie in the family, while I prefer the challenge of finding old bikes and bringing them back to life to ride another day. A few years ago, Travis approached me about doing some vintage motorcycle racing. He was going through some personal things in life and I couldn’t bear to see him that way. After some relentless bugging, as only a younger brother can do, I finally got on board with the idea; I saw it as an opportunity to spend more time together, something we had lost growing up, as with most siblings, your individual lives just get in the way. Not knowing what exactly made for the best vintage race bike, Travis happened upon a 1972 Honda CB350, former race bike on eBay and snapped it up figuring it would be a good starting point. Nothing was right on the bike when we got it but after what seemed like a hundred hours of bench time, we were legal for AHRMA Sportsman 350. Of course, everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong at our first race weekend at Road America. Fortunately for us, we learned how amazing the AHRMA family is through that misfortune. Tim Joyce gave us advice, Steven Jackson helped get the bike going again, someone brought lights so we could work through the night to get ready for racing the next day. It was a humbling experience.
When in doubt, label it.

This, that and the other thing, neatly stored.
Since the first year, we have taken more time to build our own motorcycles to race and have gotten very competitive. At the same time, we’ve made a ton of friends around the country. People have asked, “Being brothers, do you always get along?” The answer is, we don’t always have the same opinions on everything, but we always listen to what each other has to say with mutual respect. While motorcycles started off as something my brother and I enjoyed individually, racing vintage motorcycles has brought us together, in the garage, at the track or on the hunt for the next project bike. Even our parents (once sceptics of this endeavor) have embraced the passion. They join us in the garage or at the track for a beer while we toil away on the race bikes, days, hours and even minutes before it’s time to load up or suit up. Their support, advice and, well, concern, plays a huge role in getting us through the ups and downs of this kind of passion and, being brothers doing it. Getting old bikes to go fast isn’t cheap or easy, but boy, when the hard work on and off the track comes together in a podium finish or a great battle on the track with fellow racers, it’s all worth it. Oh yeah, we do have another brother, the “responsible” one, married, three kids and a high school vice-principle. No interest in motorcycles, but even he comes out to support our racing habit and join in the family bonding that has been created thanks to some old bikes going around a track during an AHRMA race weekend.
Currently in our garage we have several RDs. The RD350 has become our motorcycle of choice through the years but we have been working on getting our RD250 and RD400 race ready as well. The RD350 Production Heavyweight bike started as an ugly brown $150 motorcycle that we couldn’t get to run or handle properly for several years, and this is what made Travis a much better mechanic. Last summer at Gingerman, the 350 snapped a crankshaft in half Saturday morning and we thought our weekend was done. But after scrambling, we bought a crankshaft from Eric Lukehart and had Gary Braun (Retrodyne) weld and true it, trackside. Travis had the bike running by Saturday night and dominated Sunday’s race. It’s probably noticeable, the specific placement of everything in our garage. Travis spends hours each week organizing so there is never a question where something is located—right down to tape rolls. When we started out, we worked out of a little one-car garage Travis had at his apartment, but soon we were renting several storage units to fit all the bikes we were constantly buying. To eventually cut expenses, I moved everything out of the garages at my house and we filled them up quickly with motorcycles, parts, projects, and every tool we could possibly need. We get some interesting looks as people drive by the house, but we always welcome any curious visitors since it’s a chance to spread the good word about restoring and racing vintage motorcycles.
When the track calls, we're ready to haul!
Future projects and parts bikes.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-

Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer. AHRMA is a member owned, not-forprofit organization, which is in very good health. Our paid staff and volunteers are dedicated and effective. However they would become stretched too thin if they took on every task our members would like to see addressed. In order to have a nice variety of AHRMA swag, apparel, and collectibles available at the track and on-line, we need some volunteer help. Most of our disciplines are vibrant, but one or two of them could also use assistance. Members have asked for other enhancements, which take time and effort to be successful. We can make these and other things happen by engaging the talents and resources of our members.
Will you pitch in?

AHRMA needs a reliable volunteer to act as a media liaison for part of one day, 10 times per year. The task is short but very important to our racers. A 'Git-RDone' attitude would be a plus. email dbsuperbiker@gmail.com AHRMA's Merchandise Sales Dept is being formalized. We have an experienced and dedicated staff already in place, but could use an administrative minded volunteer to keep us on the right track. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com
AHRMA trophy and awards steward wanted to help see that race winners get the goodies they have won. Most of the time they do, but some slip through the crack and end up helter-skelter at times. The system could use a steady hand. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com
The Barber Vintage Pro Cup 2020 road race is looking for a volunteer director to help plan a one-time event this October. This one will require rubbing elbows with pro road racers and bike owners, and working with our road race directors. email: dbsuperbiker@gmail.com AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Ossa M.A.R. This 1973 Ossa MAR (MK1) has been completely rebuilt by John Glimmerveen (former NYT/About.com classic motorcycle writer and international race engineer) in the winter of 2017/18. Every part was checked/cleaned and restored or replaced as required. The engine and gearbox received new bearings, gaskets, and seals throughout and was re-shimmed to factory specs. The cylinder was honed and measured at running clearance to factory spec. This bike has done 10 trials since rebuild (one win, two second places with novice). Recently fitted: Powerdyno electronic ignition ($360), Spanish muffler ($245), Aluminum tank – made in the UK ($450), new cables, front and rear wheel bearings, new modern brake shoes.
