welcome to AHRMA Mag First off, I must apologize for the late arrival of your AHRMA MAG this issue, It's been a while since I tackled one of these. As some of you may

already know our dearly beloved Miss Alice is unfortunately no longer filling these pages. It has been quite a year of changes for AHRMA so,

that said, I'm doing my best to deliver the goods. I do, however, want to

Joe Koury

take a moment on behalf of AHRMA to say a few words. I'm not really sure where to begin. I certainly do not posses the colorful commentary of my predecessor, but then few people do. I just wanted to use my fifteen minutes of fame to say thank you to Alice for all the hard work and heart she put into this magazine. I'm pretty sure we all can agree whether you liked her particular layout style or not (I happened to like it) that she put her heart and soul into each publication and it showed. I can tell you that, trying to step in and fill the gap until we can find a new person to take on the task of AHRMA Print Coordinator, has been an eye opening experience. "Oh how hard can it be" you may ask? Let's just say I am willing to let anyone that has nothing to do for the next month step up and knock out the upcomming issue. The amount of time and focus it takes to just "lay it out" is bad enough, add to that the pressure of tracking down articles, ads, sponsors, dealing with printers, fixing photos from every possible device and just the pressure of deadlines is

a track at over 100 mph. They always say you never truly appreciate the effort of something until you have to do it yourself. Well, my fellow AHRMA racers, I appreciate her efforts now. Alice took this on and not only handled it, but because of her talent and dedication, made it better. You will be missed Alice, especially by me as I fumble through this task of temporally trying to fill your shoes. Her efforts will live on as we will not allow those efforts to go in vain and we will continue to make the "AHRMA MAG" the best it can be. I don't know what the future holds for Miss Alice, but I do know the future of this magazine is better because of her. For that I think we all can thank her. See ya at the grid, Gregory Glevicky

AHMRA Operations from the Executive Director

RR: The Track is Smoothing Out

Well, it has been and interesting month at the National Office. I won’t say it has all been fun and games, but we are moving in a positive direction for the organization.

Officially one event in and it seems as if this road will be fun and interesting.

First up, I have to say many thanks to the recently resigned Alice Sexton for her contributions to our publication now known as the AHRMA MAG. Bringing the publication to a 4-color magazine style publication with a slant toward more human interest stories brought about a new look and feel. With that said many individuals have stepped up to the plate to make sure there is no break in service of the AHRMA MAG for our members. Most notably; Joe Koury, Greg Glevicky, Cindy McLean and my wife Dewanna Comer have put in many hours to bring you this September issue which I hope all enjoy! As a result of Alice’s departure, we looked at our options and decided to tap into the tremendous reservoir of talent within AHRMA. Thanks to the advert we posted for a Print Media Specialist, several exceptional résumés were submitted and we have begun the interviewing process. Our hope is to make an offer by the time you are reading this.

AHRMA Roadracing rolled into Topeka under the unseasonably warm skies with some surprises tucked away for our racers. We believe the most glaring of those surprises was the way Tech was handled. Electronic check in and the start of once a weekend tech. Some had heard the whispers about such a procedure in the past and we think the experiment went well. MotorsportReg.com is getting better and better as we go forward and we feel it will ultimately be a very useful tool for everyone. We might recommend going through your account and updating your account and help us fill in some blanks. Transponder number is a large vacuum and one of the things that is confirmed at check in. If you have an empty DOB you might just get carded by the registration staff especially if you are approaching that magic 70 number.

Changes brought about, partly by the migration from Series Tracker to MotorsportReg as our platform for Membership Management and Race Registrations, and other considerations, lead to dissolving the former Membership Director office. We wish to thank Elli Klein for her years of service to the AHRMA organization.

As I sit here in my penthouse office with the full office staff (both of us) scurrying to my every whim, the reminder that Barber Paddock and Pit forms are out and can be picked up at the track or downloaded from the website. Even if you do not need electricity or are camping we need one on file for ALL of our attendees so we have a better idea how to lay out the paddock or pit. Those are due in by September 6, 2019.

Finally, a new position has been created to help absorb the overflow (backlog) from this office as well as take on the remaining membership management activities. Please welcome Cindy McLean as your new Executive Administrator in her expanded role.

We know 2019 has been a growing and sometimes bumpy ride but we feel the track is smoothing out a bit and really appreciate the opportunity to listen to all of you to make AHRMA the greatest race in the country.

Yes, it has indeed been a busy month for AHRMA’s business operations. We are confident that the changes which have been put in place will position our organization for a successful 2020 race season with the infrastructure and stability to build from there.

Our Staff - The treasure of Becky Hayes

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Most of my racing life has been spent on a motocross track. I have raced on grass tracks, tractor tracks, and as a kid, my neighbor’s front yard. (When they were not home of course!) I love motocross in all of its forms, while ignoring most other off road genres. This past week at Shady Acres, I parked my MX bike and rode Cross Country. I had an absolute blast! Sure, I was passed by everyone riding a motorcycle in the woods, but I didn’t care. Even the property owner, riding sweep on a Kawasaki Mini was yelling for me to get moving. Dave K warned us at the riders’ meeting that the wet wood, located in the barn would be slick, but I failed to remember that part until my back wheel began passing my front. Then there was the pond which existed at the bottom of a slick trail, which had me puckered up for quite some time. Yet, despite my lack of skill, my Roger Boardwine, Preston Petty, Hodaka Dave, Super Combat was a great bike in the woods. (I have been watching Supercross Post race interviews.) Being able to start something while breathing heavily, and swearing to quit racing was a huge gift.

For some reason whenever I start my column, I always get a song stuck in my head that is related to what's going on around me that I use for the title, and this issue it's no different. There's no question that it's changes. Some expected, some not, but the last 10 months has definitely been about changes.

One of AHRMA’s treasures is our CC program. Becky Hayes and her staff do amazing things. At Shady Acres it took Mike Zdybak 25 hours to clear and mark the track. Every tree had an arrow which made it impossible for me to sneak back into the pits with the excuse that I became lost! Foolishly I neglected a CamelBack and by the third lap my tongue was glued to the roof of my mouth. Overall, I had a wonderful time, and was told by Craig Hayes that if I would trade my Hodaka for a Husky Auto, that there was even more fun to be had. Fact is that Becky Hayes has assembled an amazing program, which is growing with every event. I cannot say enough about the volunteers who really go the extra mile to see that everyone has a great time! I know that I did, and if you have not tried an AHRMA Cross Country, you are missing out! I encourage you to give it a shot. I will be back at every opportunity and will wait impatiently for my new Auto! Our heartfelt thanks to Joe Cole, Jess Reichart, Mike and Connie Zdybak, Randy Marshall, Bryan Turk, Lisa Grove, Dave Kutskel, James Smith, Dennis and David Brown! Thank you all, I look forward to your next event! – Fred “900” Guidi AHRMA National Offroad Director 724.462.1854 fred.guidi@ahrma.org SEPTEMBER 2019

So here we are today, with our AHRMA Mag assembled by a team of AHRMA volunteers until a new print specialist is hired to take on that task. Joe Koury, Greg Glevicky and Dewanna Comer really stepped forward to make sure that our publication schedule continues uninterrupted, and deserve a huge credit! One of the things we are currently focused on include Barber and everything that goes into making it a success. We have two featured races, The Handshift Shootout presented by American Iron Magazine, and the Barber Cup presented by Motocorse Performance. The Shootout will be run a bit differently from last year, with two 3-lap races, one run after lunch Saturday, and the other on Sunday with awards immediately following on pit road. The rider accruing the most points will take home the gold as well as a couple of sets of Avon tires. The Barber Cup will have qualifying Friday after AHRMA practice, and the race will be run at the conclusion our race schedule on Saturday evening. Our Roadrace Directors are doing everything they can to ensure that time will not be taken away from our AHRMA racers. For Offroad at Barber, we have Trials on Friday and Saturday with a school on Friday, and Cross Country on Saturday and Sunday. While it's standard practice for us to have a free trials school at Barber, this year we are doing a more inclusive, fee-paid trials school with a special, to be announced, guest instructor. Immediately following Barber, we will be putting our heads down and getting the Trustee Election underway. So watch for the call for candidates, and think about who (you?) would make great contributions to AHRMA if in that position. We are making recommendations for an online election process which would also allow for hard copy ballots to be mailed to members who do not have email. This is one of the features that Motorsportreg.com has as a part of their services and has been proven to be secure and effective. So. Changes.

Rowdy Racing at ROAD AMERICA WORDS: JOE KOURY PHOTOS: ETECHPHOTO.COM Rounds 13 and 14 of the AHRMA Luke’s Racecraft National Roadrace Series transpired at the famed National Park of Speed, Road America. The weather cooperated and the turnout was impressive with a steady flow of spectators consuming the race activity as well as the annual Rockerbox Motofest. This year’s featured Vintage Cup 350GP class battle resumed with Dave Roper and Alex McClean duking it out for points. Dave beat Alex by less than a second on Saturday, Alex nipping Dave by the same margin on Sunday, with Jack Parker third both days. Jack would trade wins with Paul Germain in the 250GP showdown with John Scales filling the final podium spot in both contests. In the 200GP class, it was Chris Spargo’s Yamaha edging Gregory Glevicky’s Honda by a half-second with Dustin Johnson third on his Yammie. Sunday, Joe Koury shot out to a good lead only to see that long-legged Yamaha of Chris Spargo reel him in and get the win. Our Hondas move along pretty quickly, but those long straightaways allow that two-stroke power to shine. Mr. Glevicky experienced an untimely shifter malady, for those of you who might be curious. This race was also started in the rain, and there were some slick corners that never quite dried creating some cautious first laps. There was some anticipation leading up to Road America among the devoted 200GP contenders when they caught glimpses of Jeff Henise’s latest diabolical internal combustion device that would power Dustin Johnson’s Yamahonda. Jeff can reinvent horsepower from his laboratory in ways not often duplicated and Dustin did a fine job with the weldin’ rods, converting a sloper chassis into a simple work of tubular art to cradle the adequately breathed upon Yamaha YCS-1. Oh, did I mention Dustin is one of the fast guys from 10

the west coast, on a mission? This was his first Road America/Gingerman adventure, and he caught on quickly. There were identical photo-finishes in the CB160 races both days with Greg Glevicky nipping Joe Koury. Leah Orloff placed third on Saturday with John Scales grabbing third on Sunday. Always a duel to the end, the Yamaha twinpowered Team Hargis show was close on Saturday with Nick getting the best of Jeff by a narrow margin in Sportsman 750 the first day and Jeff beating Matt Esterline’s Honda 750 four to the finish on Sunday. Stephen Pettinger completed the podiums both days with third place finishes. In Sportsman 500, Eric Cook led the way over Scott Turner on Saturday and backed it up with a win over Greg Potter 24 hours later. Greg would win the Sportsman 350 race over Gary Swan, and David Felpel, but Eric came back to claim the victory ahead of Scott Turner and Greg Potter the following day. Seven sidecars lined up both days for the mixedclass shootout with some tight finishes. Henry Nelson (Modern Sidecar US F1) won by a hair on Saturday over driver Pierre Rochat/passenger Ruth Green (Modern Sidecar FIM F2) and the result was Rochat/ Nelson by the same hair on Sunday. Tony Doukas (Modern Sidecar US F2) followed them over the line, in third, both races. Seroj Terian was the victor in both Thruxton Cup Challenge races, but second and third were hotly contested. Tony Read snagged second place by a scant 1.4 seconds over Mike Blankenship and Mike beat Clint Austin home by less than that on Sunday. Good. Close. Racing. Jason Farrell blazed the fastest lap of the weekend

(2:21.026) winning the first Sound of Thunder 1 race over Greg Avello and Mark White. The trio would finish in the same order in Sunday’s Formula Thunder race after Saturday’s Farrell, Avello, Wilbert podium. Some seriously fast guys on mighty impressive motorcycles (this coming from a meek F125er). Greg Avello would win over Mark White and Todd Murray on Sunday. There were 24 entries in the Sound of Thunder 2 class on Saturday and 28 on Sunday. It was Todd Murray over Tom Wilbert by 1.3 with Brain

Larrabure taking third. Sunday was payback time as Tom snuck by Todd by less than a tick with New Zealander, Stephen Briggs, in third. Vintage Superbike Lightweight had a lighter than usual number of entries at Road America with 6 racers registered. On Saturday, Pete Homan shot out in front early with a great start and never looked back. Daniel May and John Rickard were tied up in Sound of Singles 1 traffic, and once they were able to get through, they had a great battle with Rickard finishing in second and May taking a close third. In Sunday’s race, May and Homan had a drag race to turn one on the start, but again Homan took the lead. May kept Homan in sight, but was unable to reel him in. Homan took first again, May second, and Rickard third. Paul Germain and his 650 Yamaha took Vintage Superbike Middleweight honors over David Eulberg’s Ducati Pantah and Richard Richter’s Kawasaki on Saturday. Sunday, Eulberg won in a squeaker over Germain. In Sunday’s Vintage Superbike Heavyweight race, Will Brint’s CBX was sandwiched between the Kawasakis of winner David Crussell and third place Dennis Parrish. There were 18 signed up for Sound of Singles 3 on Saturday, 19 on Sunday. Ralph Staropoli and Stewart Aitken-Cade must’ve had a great time racing neckand-neck both days on their Honda NSF250Rs, trading wins with margins of less than two tenths of a second. Jordan Reid found himself on the third podium step in both races. Formula 125 was an eye-opener for me. Those danged two-strokes. Michael Perry’s Yamaha and Neil Pooler’s Can Am put some distance on my Honda, but

I managed a third, making up some ground in the turns. Neil eventually won. I waited all day Sunday to crash out of race 13, collected in a heap in front of me with nowhere to go, and I had to smell those Michael, Neil and Sakis exhaust fumes en route. Sakis won over Neil and Michael, all separated by just 1.2 seconds. The F250 race was all Honda 350-mounted Kevin Dinsmoor on Saturday and Sunday over Craig Light’s Bultaco and Jarl Wathne’s Honda CB400F. SEPTEMBER 2019

Here is Kevin’s personal Road America recap: It all started with an attempt to ride with GP shift for the first time. I felt RA was large enough that I'd have time to relax and learn the new style. The first practice went well; second round, not so good. After several brain fades and wrong shifts, I was coming out of the last turn onto the front stretch in 3rd gear, ready for 4th. Oops. I found 2nd, got excited and shifted into 1st. The engine screamed for mercy, I exited the track and called it a day. Saturday, realizing I cannot learn new things. I went back to regular shift. I rolled out for first practice, had no clutch engagement, and slipped all the way around. I dropped the side cover and five pounds of metal fell out. The clutch basket exploded. With no racers to supply parts, I went to the

swap meet where I scored the only seized, oil soaked CB350 engine for $80, delivered. I quickly worked to replace the parts and clean the shrapnel as best I could (I thought I got it all). I ended up winning both day’s F250 races. So, things were going well, or so it seemed. (To be continued.) David Crussell took the Formula Vintage win on Saturday on his KZ1000 by a sizeable margin, but

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Sunday it would be Will Brint on his CBX over Dennis Parrish with Mark Morrow just inches behind him. Mark won the Formula 500 both days barely edging Kevin Dinsmoor with Ryan Hunt third. Sunday: Morrow, Hunt and Eric Lukehart. It was Morrow, Kenny Cummings, Albert Charles in Formula 750 on day one with Cummings beating Morrow on day two. In Saturday’s Battle of the Twins 1, Brain Larrabure bested Dakota Wolter and Scott Billings. Sunday, it was a Stephen Briggs, Chris Wolter, Scott Billings finish. Battle of the Twins 2 concluded with William Brown first followed by Britten keeper Bob Robbins and Craig Light, all riding Ducatis. A large 27-bike grid kicked off Saturday’s Sound of Thunder 3 race. Kurt Klein took the win with Dakota Wolter and Greg Hutcheson in tow. Sunday, it was Chris Haesemeyer’s turn to win over Hutcheson and Wolter, and they had a close battle for second separated by just .059 seconds! Classic Footshift: Alex McClean, Dave Tompkins, Dave Roper both races. Classic Handshift would also see the same finish both days: David Bourbeau, Ralph Wessell, Jon Schultz. In the 500 Premier class on Saturday Helmi Niederer beat Brian Larrabure by a half-second. Sunday it was Andrew Mauk, Helmi Niederer, Brian Larrabure first, second and third. Andrew Mauk (Honda VF500F) lost to Robert Himmelmann (Yamaha FZ600) by just .461 seconds with Monty Stauffer (FZR400 Yamaha) third in the Next Gen Superbike Lightweight class. Next Gen Superbike 2 on Saturday: Kurt Klein, Seroj Terian, Scott Billings. Sunday Kurt would repeat his win with Seroj and Scott swapping their finishes. Next Gen Superbike’s Saturday showdown looked like this: Brian Larrabure first, J. Scott Rothermel second and Scott Billings third. Sunday it was Rothermel over Billings and Bob Robbins landing the final podium position. Travis Kestell won both Novice Historic Production Heavyweight races on a Yamaha RD350 followed by Duane Kuhlow and Herb Haigh. Open Two-Stroke is always good for some rapid laps. Ralph Staropoli and his Honda RS250R finished on top with David Crussell on his TZ750 coming in second both days. Brian Surtees was third on Saturday and Gregory Glevicky third on Sunday, both riders on Yamaha TZ250s. That's a wrap. Thanks again AHRMA staff and volunteers. During the first week of June, new snow was falling, and was up to the level of the back deck (some 9 to 10 feet) of the Auburn Ski Club building, the property on which the AHRMA two-day trial national has been held for many years. With the announcement deadline of July 8 looming, whether or not the event would be held, it didn't look the least bit promising. However, when we received the on-site report July 7 of a few large patches still under the trees and shadier areas, but otherwise clear, we pulled the trigger and the event was “on. Forty-two riders signed up for Saturday, and we are grateful for their faith, waiting until the last minute to see if the snow would indeed melt. We were all rewarded with moister than usual soil, some running creek sections, and deep green meadows with wildflowers everywhere. Modern Classic Intermediates saw close results between first place Craig Menghini and Joe Bill, with a one-point separation, 12 and 13 respectively. Grant Menghini couldn't quite overtake his brother or Joe Bill, and was third with 23 points. Canadian Modern Classic Expert Gary Gronow finished exactly 10 points ahead of second place Walt Foster. Modern Classic Novices had a new kid in town, literally, young Will Hannerty, grandson of Ralph and

Nancy Foster. Will dominated with a six point day, ahead of Clay Dawley (11 points), and third place Russ Pfirrman. In Classic Expert, Joe Klokkevold and Rick Wolff started off fairly matched until Klokkevold's zero-point second loop, which put Wolff out of the running; Klokkevold had 24 points to Wolff's 33. Former ISDE gold medal winner Duke Lambert gave trials a try on Kelly Shane's Ariel, riding the Premier Heavyweight Intermediate class and winning handily with a five-point loss for the day. Stephen Newell struggled all day in the Premier Lightweight Expert class with one mishap after another, including a gas cap failure which drenched him in gasoline. He still managed to finish the event, behind the winner, smooth Evan Wilcox. There were four entries in the Beginner class, and Kelly Young won easily with two zero loops and one five, ahead of Cy Yee. Young has already decided to move on to the Novice class next event. Expert Todd Stanley, wanting to contest the new Modern Twin Shock

class did so aboard his older Modern Classic bike both days since his Fantic was not quite ready. He lost 31 points on the expert line. Saturday night a large crowd produced an array of scrumptious pot luck dishes which were enjoyed by hungry riders and workers alike at the motorhome of Jeff and Bindi Bushey. SEPTEMBER 2019

Traditionally, the second day of a twoday trial will have fewer riders than the first, and that pattern held for Sunday. Thirty riders got an earlier start than the previous day, and finished around 1:30ish. Ralph Foster was the lone Master rider Saturday, but had some company in the form of Wes Poole, who thus far hasn't come close to even striking distance but enjoys the friendly competition with Ralph, none-the-less. Ralph's score was higher than usual for him - 29, to Poole's 49, but Poole's last loop was impressive losing only six points to Ralph’s two. Kelly Shane took his recovering knee for a spin in the Premier Heavyweight Expert class against Rob Poole, with Poole taking the win. Premier Heavyweight Intermediates Charlie Higdon and Dan Wilson finished close, 51 and 55 points, with Higdon getting the narrow win.

of Walt Foster and Paul Deree who were separated by one point. Joe Bill edged out Jeff Bushey for the Modern Classic Intermediate win, 13 points to Bushey's 16, with the famous Menghini Brothers taking 3rd and 4th, 21 for Grant and 24 points for Craig. The Modern Classic Novice force was again led by young Will Hennarty, one of only two riders to have one clean loop (Joe Klokkevold was the other), with a final score of 15 ahead of 17 pointer Clay Dawley for second. Third place went to the always-steady Marcus Harner. Todd Stanley again entered the Modern Twin Shock Expert class and improved his previous day’s score with 25 points. Beginner Cy "I'm Lovin' It" Yee completed the second day with no competition, but a wide smile and more improvements gained. Those who work the hardest are often not even seen. In this case it was Luke Sayer, who injured his knee in June and is still unable to ride. Having committed to helping with the event many months ago, he still honored that pledge and showed up Monday afternoon ready to work, even though he could not ride. Driving up from L.A., he worked for two long days, and then made the drive back. Thanks to Luke, Kelly Shane, Charlie Higdon, Jeff Bushey, Janee McGee and Tyrus Wilson for their help with the sections, and to Jeff Bushey for the unlimited use of his side-by-side without which we would have been completely lost.

Double-day winner Evan Wilcox bested Stephen Newell in the Premier Lightweight Experts, as did Joe Klokkevold in the Classic Expert class over Rick Wolff. Gary "Canadian Bacon" Gronow was always just about the last to finish both days, but it must have been part of why he had such an excellent weekend, winning the Modern Classic Experts again with only 17 points, ahead AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Smitten by the Britten? Words and photos by: Joe W. Koury

AHRMA Road Race Co-Director, Tony Pentecost, said tech inspection was completely shut down one morning at a WERA event back in the ‘90s when Nick Ienatsch rolled a Britten into the area. The ten on-duty inspectors just dropped what they were inspecting to check out the V1000. When the riders realized what was going down, they all started looking for anything stable and vertical to lean their bikes against so they could join the gawkfest.

Our bikes were race-ready, so there I was, taking in all the magnificence of Road America (first-timers, with my son, Joe) in a rare state of little-to-do, when AHRMA Digital Communications Director, Cindy McLean, tapped me to gather some substance for an article on the ‘visiting’ Britten motorcycle. I had seen the one-of-only-ten-built Britten V1000s earlier near garage 13 and just figured it was all exhibit, with full intent to check it out later. I was privately embarrassed for that assumption after the enlightening interview. The one thing that really jumped out at me during and after the chat with the owner, Bob Robbins, was his intent to keep this unique and obviously prized motorcycle race ready. Bob said serial number P001-94 was more race bike than investment so he’s made some subtle changes to improve its performance and reliability. This was the fourth Britten built in 1994 in the Christchurch, New Zealand, factory and the first production model (as opposed to the factory models with an ‘F’ serial number). Bob said there were no differences between production and factory bikes and majority of the ten Brittens built were never raced. The acquisition was, in 14

Bob’s words, “convoluted.” He was discussing the purchase of another motorcycle in 2014 with a seller in Italy when he inquired about the availability of a Britten. He came in as a back-up buyer and snagged the bike he had raced against several years earlier at Daytona, still sporting its striking CR&S livery. The Britten V1000 is a hand-built, GP-style racing motorcycle designed and assembled by the late John Britten and a group of friends during the early 1990s. I’ve seen more than one fond reference to the Britten factory as a ‘shed,’ compared to the big outfits in Europe and Japan. The cover of Cycle World Magazine once proclaimed it, “The world’s most advanced motorcycle.” It won Battle of the Twins and Sound of Thunder races at Daytona and Mid Ohio, achieved fastest top speed at the Isle of Man TT and set several world speed records. A 189 MPH motorcycle back in the ‘90s? The 999cc, 60-degree, v-twin-powered brute/art combo was designed with many innovations including extensive use of carbon fiber, under-seat radiator, double wishbone front suspension with eccentric pivots for adjustability, frameless chassis and engine data logging. engine data logging.

Nine of the ten Brittens were in attendance at the 11th Annual Barber Vintage Festival back in 2015, with five making their way onto the track. Two of them were also entered and raced, starting from pit lane, by Andrew Stroud and Stephen Briggs in the AHRMA Sound of Thunder class on Saturday. On Sunday, owner Jim Hunter decided to enter Andrew again and start from the grid, this time winning the race over the Ducati 888 of Chris Boy in a close battle, putting another Britten win in the books some 20-plus years on. Stephen again hooked up with Bob and the Britten to take a few laps around the four-mile Road America circuit. He was also racing AHRMA Battle of the Twins 1 and Sound of Thunder 2 classes on a Ducati. He’s from Papakura, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, and has a quite impressive riding background. He rode motocross for 6 years, starting at the age of 7 and did some Speedway for 3 years before spending 5 years road racing in Europe. Add 5 years on a factory KTM SuperMoto bike, 3 years of 500GP experience in Japan, Malaysia and Australia, World Superbike and World Endurance Championship, and it’s

AHRMA rider, Michael Perry (number 417), recalled a Britten account at the AMA Daytona 200 in 1997. He was there with his justreleased Suzuki TL1000 v-twin. When the promoters got word the lap times Michael Barnes (2016 Daytona 200 winner) was laying down on the Britten were faster than the factory Superbikes, they would not allow it to run. Well, that, and a little snag called homologation.

clear why Bob lets him swing a leg over the Britten. He also raced this bike for the Italian CR&S Team back in 1995 and 1996, stopped riding for 6 years, and then Bob called for the reunion. Stephen also revealed, since he prefers 2-strokes, his favorite ride is a 250GP motorcycle. I couldn’t wait to throw out the next question, one I’m sure other racers would also be anxious to ask: “What’s it like riding this motorcycle?” “Are you nervous at all knowing what is sitting between your knees?” He said he’s now comfortable on the bike although the risk of tossing it or destroying unobtainable engine parts is in the back of his mind. He wants to try and push it just 80%, but the bike begs to be ridden, and works better, ridden hard like the GP bike it is. He said they did have some struggles with chatter, but modern tires helped to calm that down. Bob was a busy man as well, racing Next Gen Superbike and Next Gen Superbike 2 on his Ducati 888 and Battle of the Twins 1 and 2 in addition to Sound of Thunder 2 and 3 on his Ducati 750 SS. He started out like so many of us, riding minibikes, and then motocross as a kid. Bob decided street riding was a hazard he no longer wanted to confront so he started doing track days around 1992. He said he’s probably ridden 60,000 miles on racetracks and his favorite motorcycle is the Ducati 750 SS. My first Bob impression was a good one, as nervously walked toward the Britten while he visited with groups of visitors, carefully stroking its skin with a cloth and Honda Spray Cleaner and Polish (same aerosol slather we use). You could just see the glow of pleasure and pride. It’s obvious both Bob and Stephen have a passionate bond with this machine. My background in building and repairing SEPTEMBER 2019

motorcycles steered me into the last segment of the Q&A with Bob. I wanted to know about service and replacement parts since production in New Zealand stopped in 1998 and an earthquake turned the final lock on the factory in 2011. He said he and the other owners have stockpiled a number of spare parts and sources have agreed to make a few one-offs, including engine parts. The bike has been stripped to the crankshaft three times since 2014 for inspection and update of some parts like rods, bearings, etc. A mechanic for one of the original US owners, who was trained by Britten technicians, was happy to jump back into one after almost 20 years. An oil sample is sent out for analysis each time the engine is run. The final characteristic, and possibly most important aspect for many of the curious, is, “What does this bike sound like?” If you were at Barber in 2015 or more recently at Road America, you witnessed it for yourself. For me, it was an eerie combo of roar, rumble and scream I’ll soon not forget. And ogling all the many exotic pieces that make the Britten what it is, at close range, will make any gearhead mechanically giddy. A tip of the hat to Bob and Stephen for making a little time for me to get to know them and the marvelous Britten motorcycle. If nothing else, it drove this writer to the adjective bin more than once in an attempt to do it justice. – Joe W. Koury Member #1012608

Gingerman Raceway. The sidecar racing was fantastic. 17 total entries, 12 of those were vintage rigs with 14 on the grid. Peter Essaff led them all on day one to a close finish with Henry Nelson, both in Modern US F1. It was a Tim Joyce, Eric Trosper, Matthew Gill finishing order in Stock Production SC2. Michelle LeClear-Fisher boldly hopped on for her first BEARS class passenger gig with Dutch Stivason. Daniel May won Lost Era over Vincent L. (Vito) Wilson. Of course, the Rochat/Green effort was out there in US F2, Tony Doukas in FIM F2 and Mike Stivason in Vintage SC1. There was drama on Sunday in turn two, first lap, when Lisa Doukas detached herself from the rig. She was skillfully dodged and remounted for the restart. There was also a broken frame that

sidelined another sidecar. Bill Willmeroth crossed the finish just ahead of Tim Joyce in a fun race that had a hoard of spectators atop the berms in turns one and two. This was a special weekend for the Stivason family, as Dutch's 2 sons, Mike and Sean, were also racing sidecars. Alex McClean and David Roper swapped wins in the featured Vintage Cup 350GP races. Alex is the current points leader as the season now begins to wind down. Paul Germain won 250GP both days over Francis Ganance’s Ducati with Dustin Johnson a distant third. Dustin was getting the track figured out on Sunday and moved up a position with John Scales third. 17 riders gridded for the 200GP with Gregory Glevicky and Joe Koury doing their sideby-side thing until Koury threw it down two

corners from the finish. Greg had nowhere to go but down. He was credited with the win; Dustin Johnson and Bill Doran completing the podium. Sunday, Greg let ‘er rip and pulled a good lead over Koury. Bill Doran nipped away and nearly caught Joe for second place. It was another Glevicky/Koury duel in both CB160 races. Greg took both narrow wins with John Scales in third. Fourth place Kevin Burns had the fastest lap in Sunday’s race. He was on a roll. Novice Historic Production Lightweight riders Mike Baker and John D. Fitzer battled to a close finish. It was Baker by a halfwheel, Lex Robb in third position. Sunday’s finish: Donovan Levan, Lex Robb, Thomas Sanders. Tom Hillard grabbed the win in Saturday’s Novice Historic Production SEPTEMBER 2019

Heavyweight race over Herb Haigh and Kevin Ayscue. Travis Kestell won on Sunday over Haigh and Hillard. The Formula 250 race between Kevin Dinsmoor and Daniel Miller was fun to watch on Sunday. They also fought it out in the Formula 500 races. Kevin’s F250 victory margin was 1.5 seconds with Jarl Wathne third. Danny Miller won on Sunday over Kevin with brother Dave finishing third. But there’s an explanation. (Kevin Dinsmoor’s story, continued.) I get to Gingerman, practice was good, and so were the jets, plug checks, suspension tweaks, and, I learn the track. I had to get hard on the front brakes to avoid a suddenly slow rider, and when I did the last piece of the clutch basket (see, I didn't get it all!) jumped in and stripped the primary

drive gears. I split the cases Friday night and installed the gear set from the swap meet engine. It turns out that was a very good purchase. My AHRMA friends stopped by often to offer parts, help, beer, food, conversation, anything to be helpful, and it was deeply appreciated. That's why I like it here! As I'm leading on Saturday, the seal behind the front sprocket comes loose and gets oil on the rear tire. I back it down and finish second. Sunday I was able to keep it together for the win. Life in leathers. David Miller had his hands full in both 350 Sportsman races as John Waverka relentlessly chased him around the Gingerman circuit. David prevailed though with Scott Turner in third. John did win both 500 Sportsman races over Scott Turner, with Peter Taefli and Chris WWW.AHRMA.ORG

(continued) Siarkiewicz third Saturday and Sunday. Jeff and Nick Hargis traded victories in the Sportsman 750 class. Ted Robinson was third both days. I wish I could’ve seen the Thruxton Cup Challenge races. Looked like Clint Austin and Paul Canale were handlebar-tohandlebar both days. Clint came out on top twice with Eugene Casciaro third. Daniel May battled with Josh Saxe the entire Vintage Superbike Lightweight race, swapping positions a half dozen times. May was able to draft Saxe right at the finish line for the win by .193 seconds, with John Rickard in third. On Sunday, John Rickard showed them how the old guys do it (John is 71). He won the race by 7 seconds, with Saxe taking second and May a distant third. Vintage Superbike Middleweight finishes were the same both days: Paul Germain, David Eulberg, Alexander Cook. Josh Saxe won the Sound of Thunder 3 contests over Greg Hutcheson with Dakota Wolter right on Greg’s rear tire in both races. That’s some tight racing. Jason Smith blazed a 1:37.363 in his Saturday Sound of Thunder 2 win over Darrell Cooney and Joshua Saxe in a race with 22 entries. Sunday, it was Dakota Wolter, Jason Smith and Clint Austin. Greg Avello won Sound of Thunder 1, followed by Mark White and Jason Smith on Saturday. Sunday’s finishing order was Mark White, Darrell Cooney and Jason Smith. Greg, 20

Mark and Jason also left it all out on the tarmac in Saturday’s Formula Thunder race with less than 2 seconds separating them at the finish, all ripping sub-1:40 lap times. Battle of the Twins 1 results were identical both days with Dakota Wolter getting top spot over Paul Canale and Scott Billings. In the Battle of the Twins 2 class, both days, Bob Berbeco beat Clint Austin with Eugene Casciaro third. Looks like Louis LeBlanc has put some distance on me for top spot in the Formula 125 class. He ran and hid, chased by Colton Roberts on Sunday, but left me with a great battle both days holding off Craig Hirko’s Bridgestone on Saturday and narrowly losing to the formidable Derek Strange on Sunday. Big fun. Oh, I almost forgot. More fun. I was honored to work Tech for the first time on Friday. I appreciated everyone’s patience while I struggled as a trainee. I actually learned a lot. And the learning continued, sitting next to Gary Braun at dinner one evening. Now that was a fabricator’s treat. Co-contributors: Daniel May, Kevin Dinsmoor, Michelle LeCLear-Fisher, Carl Anderson

After a successful display and demonstration at Road America, once again New Zealander Stephen Briggs who finished second in the BEARS World Championship in 1995 will be racing with us and also running some hot laps along with Barber’s very own Britten with Chuck Huneycutt at the helm around the Barber race course Stephen will be on the same Britten he campaigned that year for the CR & S team from Italy. One of the ten V1000’s produced, and the first customer supplied bike in its Black and Yellow CR & S team livery was raced from 1994 through 1998 across the world including the Isle Of Man. Since being put back into race ready condition in 2014 after more than 15 years of display, it sees the track quite often for demonstration runs from events in New Zealand to the Isle Of Man, Assen, Barber and several other destinations. Barber keeps their bike in full running condition and exercises it periodically, including a trip to the Goodwood Festival in 2017. These two bikes with their distinctly different color schemes make for some beautiful photos and the sound is uniquely Britten. The CR & S black and yellow bike will be in the race paddock on the second tier on display along with some historic photos throughout the event and official Britten Motorcycle Co merchandise will be available for purchase. The iconic Blue & Pink Britten will be in the museum . An informal presentation with both bikes present will be held at the museum following the racing on Saturday, with some Q & A about their history along with technical aspects. All ten of the Britten V1000’s still exist today as complete bikes, 6 being in the US, and four in New Zealand. Three earlier versions also exist and are still in New Zealand

Intoducing Barber Vintage Days Grand Marshal

John Penton PHOTOS: PENTON PHOTO COLLECTION John Penton has been on the cover of many magazines, the subject of many feature articles, a biography and a movie and it has taken all these and more to convey his story. His talents include innovator, racer, mechanic, motorcycle dealer, champion, father, entrepreneur, and member of the AMA Hall of Fame, among others. Born in 1925, he is considered one of the most influential members in the development of off-road motorcycle racing in America during the 1960s and ‘70s. A national champion rider, Penton went on to develop a legendary brand of off-road motorcycles that bore his name. When he couldn’t find the motorcycle that he wanted and needed to race, he created it. His thought being he was tired of setting up motorcycles to ride and designed one that was race ready. Thousands of riders learned to ride on Pentons which are celebrating their 51st anniversary. In their 10-year production run, more than 25,000 Penton motorcycles were sold in America.

legendary and during this won his first Jack Pine. In 1959 on a bet, he attempted a transcontinental record attempt from New York to California. He did 3051 miles in 52 hours, 11 minutes and 1 second with an average speed of 58mph. His record was heavily advertised by BMW and newspapers all over the world covered the record run making Penton a legend in motorcycling. In 1960, Penton won the AMA’s Most Popular Rider Award in a time when that prestigious award was almost exclusively won by AMA Grand National racers. He was also given the NSU Victorious Rider Award which has only been awarded 7 times and he is the only American recipient. In 1967, Penton was a member of the U.S. International Six Day Trial (now called

Penton’s innovations were not reserved exclusively for the manufacture of motorcycles. Wanting to improve on the standard work boot that most off-road riders wore, he approached Italian ski boot maker Alpinestars about modifying its boots for motorcycling. The result was Hi-Point boots, “Built for Champions," which were endorsed by Kenny Roberts and by the late-1970s, were considered a must-have by many motocross and off-road riders and it became the biggest-selling boot in the country. Hi-Point expanded to include all forms of off-road riding apparel.

“He sold motocross to America”

In 1950, Penton and his brothers opened a motorcycle dealership that carried BSAs and soon afterwards BMW and NSU brands with others to follow including the Penton itself. John was an Enduro racer which means he raced in off road competitions over natural rough terrain (“mud runs”). He began racing in the Jack Pine where the bikes of choice were Harleys and Indians, but he soon turned to a smaller BSA with the thought that “smaller may be better”. He spent 1958 racing enduros all over the US on a quest that became SEPTEMBER 2019

International Six Day Enduro) and known as the “Olympics of Motorcycling” since it is said to be the “most difficult and prestigious motorcycle endurance event on earth”. While in Europe, Penton toured the Husqvarna factory trying to convince the manufacturer to produce an even lighter off-road machine. After receiving a lukewarm reception Penton decided to visit the KTM factory in Austria. His proposal for a lightweight off-road bike was again met with skepticism. As an incentive, Penton offered to put up his own money if KTM would build prototypes to his specifications. KTM agreed and in early 1968 Penton took delivery of six Penton 100cc prototypes. He promptly entered races and put some of the other top riders on the other bikes. In the first year, more than 400 Pentons were sold. AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

His many accolades and awards go on and on. In 1980, Cycle News declared him the “Motorcyclist of the decade." He won 13 AMA Enduro Championships and in 1998, he was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame. His fans are many and have wonderfully enduring words and memories to describe him including “He sold motocross to America” and “A Legend in his own time.” We are honored to have John Penton as the Grand Marshal for the 15th Annual Barber Vintage Festival October 4-6, 2019.

Marty Strouse had a strong ride, winning the Vintage 60+ Expert class. In the PV race, the age group classes were well represented by Steve Bowman (50+ Expert), Robert Williams (70+ Expert), Thomas Tippett (50+ Intermediate), and Dave McIntyre (60+ Intermediate). The hard luck award for Sunday went to Greg Barratt who somehow ended up in the creek and not on the bridge.

AHRMA gets a little recognition on the side Sidecar field growning

AHMRA'S side car community Photo credits Dewanna Comer

As the sidecar class grows in AHRMA, it is easy to see why this sport is exhilarating and people want to give it a try. It takes time, dedication and many hours of preparation to set up any sidecar. Most of the sidecar teams are just that, Teams. With all this said, AHRMA has recently made some pivotal moves and the grids at each race have been quickly filling up. Support for this is not just seen in the USA, but AHRMA were once again supported by a Scottish Veteran of sidecar racing who brought some very special new rigs and awards to the Roebling Road Raceway and NOLA Motorsports Park racing over the course of each of the race weekends. Firstly, AHRMA have been awarded the 2019 Ambassadors award from the International Sidecar Racing Association. This award is voted on by invitation members and by Ambassadors to the sport globally where the ballot is a closed one vote to Select Ambassadors within the ISRA. President of the ISRA, explains “many sidecar legends are behind this award, 30

and in particular world champions. Truly a prestigious award that is given to organisations, people, and teams who are committed to embracing the full spectrum of sidecar racing.’” AHRMA have done

just that with the introduction to at the top end Formula Sidecar Racing and that of BEARS, the closest historical aspect of sidecar racing when it was first invented in the early 1890s 1900s. The second extremely exciting awards AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

that are to be given to AHRMA, are the two trophies that are perpetual that will stay with AHRMA for life. These are the Steve Webster Formula Sidecar Racing Driver Trophy and the Tony Hewitt Formula Sidecar Passengers Trophy Steve Webster is an MBE (Member of the British Empire) and a 10 times world champion sidecar trophy winner and numerous other awards. Webster began as a 19-year-old racing at club level, first racing at the Elvington Airfield circuit near York, UK and quickly moved up to national and then world championship in 1983, winning his first world championship in 1987 while partnered with Tony Hewitt, riding an LCR-Yamaha machine. From 181 Grand Prix and World Cup races entered, he has had 62 wins, 37 second places and 27 third places as well as 82 pole positions. He has won the FIM Sidecar World Championship on 10 occasions (1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, and 2004), with Tony Hewitt, Gavin Simmons, David James and Paul Woodhead.[1] In 1985 Webster and Hewitt had a SEPTEMBER 2019

massive crash at the Dutch TT at Assen, shown many times on television where the sidecar left the track at high speed, slid along the grass before hitting a drainage ditch. The accident caused the pair to miss most of the season. Webster was the recipient of the Segrave Trophy in 1991. The same year, he was awarded the MBE.[1] In 2004 Webster won British, European, and World titles, but in 2005 Webster announced his retirement after health problems prevented him finishing

the season.[2][3] In 2006, Webster received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Auto Cycle Union.[4] In 2015, Webster was reunited with Hewitt on track, the pair taking part in a test event at Mallory Park.[5] Further to this Trophy, there will also be the Tony Hewitt Formula Sidecar Passengers Trophy, both will be awarded by AHRMA only based on the Formula racing of Sidecars and Teams achieving Formula wins.

These Trophies are to be gifted to AHRMA, based on continuation of their ethics to enhance the sport and encourage the growth of sidecar racing in the United States. Both these Trophies are endorsed by Steve Webster MBE.

Inaugural AHRMA

Vintage Cup featuring 350GP

David Roper and Alex McClean Photo credit etechphoto.com

ELORA, TN, August 5, 2019 – Over the past two weekends, the AHRMA Vintage Cup series featuring the 350GP class, sponsored by NYC Norton and Roadracing World Magazine (RoadracingWorld.com) took place at Road America (rounds 13-14) and Gingerman Raceway (rounds 15-16).

Having won both rounds at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kansas, Alex McLean came into the Road America race weekend with a 2000+ point lead over Dave Roper, with Jim Korn second. Jack Parker joined the competition, racing his 1968 Yamaha DT250. Both days showed Roper and McLean similarly matched in talent and power, with Roper taking the checkered flag in front of McLean on Saturday and McLean getting the job done on Sunday. Jack took 3rd, and admitted that at Road America, being down on power with his 250, he can’t use his late braking skills to his advantage due to the long straights that RA is known for. Gingerman Raceway brought Frances Ganance on his 1966 Ducati Mark 3 to the grid. The weekend took much the same shape as Road America. McLean took the lead at the start on Saturday, but 32

on lap 3 missed a shift and gave Roper the opportunity he was looking for. McLean was unable to retake the lead and Roper took the win with McLean in second. On Sunday, McLean took and kept the lead from beginning to end, taking the checkered flag with a considerable lead over Roper. With McLean still leading in points, AHRMA next heads to Buttonwillow Raceway, in Buttonwillow, California for rounds 17 & 18. From NYC Norton sponsor Kenny Cummings: “As we come out of Gingerman, one thing that has become apparent is that McLean and Roper are dominating this series. Nonetheless, some competitive 350GP riders such as Jack Parker, and Frances Ganance have joined the fray enhancing an already exciting field. All of these races, whether you are watching the lead contenders or a race within the race, are truly nail-biters. Next stop, California, Buttonwillow in two weeks. We then go to Utah, Talledega, culminating with the big finale at Barber Vintage Festival, October 5-7, where this series will be decided, making this a true nationwide American Vintage Grand Prix series.”

Tony Mang’s original race glove

2005

Many watertight motorcycle gloves are made of four layers: a sturdy outer material; an insulating layer; a watertight layer and a lining material. The robust new GORE-TEX® membrane used in the X-TRAFIT™ technology makes it possible to eliminate two layers. All remaining layers are laminated together using a three-dimensional process and Gore’s new thermal adhesive netlike structure to retain breathability.

Black, Black-White

The year of the big breakthrough. With the help of Toni Mang (5 times GP World Champion), Held developed a totally new and radically different glove. Its specification still sets the standard for all up-to-date sports gloves.

2

X-TRAFIT® is the next-gen GORE-TEX® technology allowing the highly functional, breathable, wind-blocking and water-repellent membranes for motorcycle gloves a sensitive grip feeling and optimal comfort for the hands.

This gives the gloves a highly sensitive feel. 3 Each seam takes 30 minutes of hand work. 4 The finger gusset is pulled forward, so there is no pressure on the finger from the seams.

A Yankee Goes to the Beach, and Leaves a Lasting Legacy

“Notice the date of the two letters, Christmas Eve, 1974. John Taylor and company must have had tremendous customer service to write a personalized letter the night before Christmas admitting to their flawed parts. The last sentence must also appease the insurance company for Yankee; thanks for the warning!”

The year was 1966 and my

16-year-old dad was working at a service

station that had many different cars and bikes pass through. One of the deals

he couldn’t pass up was his first motorcycle, a 1965 Honda CL72 scrambler.

Riding the tires off that bike in the sum-

mer, he and his friend found themselves lost on the back roads. As fate would

have it, they stumbled upon a used car

dealership displaying a beautiful chrome and black Royal Enfield Interceptor.

The moment that 16-year-old saw that 50

it new knew of the bike. Circle Cycles in Cincinnati was a dealer of many unique cycles and its owner, Dave, would call

and order parts for my dad. But it was a 1968 Hot Rod magazine article that

that left a lasting impression on Dad. Hot Rod magazine always had a brief motorcycle section, and one month offered a

glimpse into a new, 500 CC, twin cylinder two-stroke that would be lightweight, fast and have only the best components. It was the Yankee Z500.

In 1972, married and ready to

really start their adventures, my parents moved to the Outer Banks of North

Carolina. Most of the locals had Honda scramblers, while a few had BSAs and Triumphs. But Virginia Beach had an

Ossa dealer and the Pioneer had always stuck out in my dad’s mind. Visiting the dealer in Virginia, he found two brand

new Yankee Z500s gracing the show-

room. The dealer said he’d had them for

a year and a half and just can’t sell them. Thinking back to Hot Rod magazine

article, buying one was an easy decision

to make. The sandy beaches of Hatteras

would surely put it through its paces, but

so would a neighbor’s son from Michigan on a brand-new Can Am MX250. A solid, 34-horsepower, 225-pound steed, the

Can Am sailed through the sandy beach

trails, outrunning the brand-new Yankee, which made its way to the market with 38 horsepower and weighing around 325 pounds. It wasn’t long before a main bearing

broke its cage and the new ‘Yank’ was sidelined, while the Can Am kept roosting around.

It was late ’74 and a

Yankee with 500 miles on the odometer sat broken. What was a hot-rodder to do but call the factory and tell them

his problem.? Well, it was almost as if

Yankee were sitting there waiting for their bike owners to call so they could jump

into action with the engine they desper-

ately wanted to put out. After a series of letters (refer to the pictures) and phone calls, my father had Yankee port and

blueprint the cylinders, fabricate expansion chambers, and set my him up with

a 60-hp, 180-degree crank, fire-breathing beast with straight stingers, bigger

carbs, ports and high compression. The American Yankee was doing doughnuts around anything that dared enter the sand flats.

Fast-forward to 1984 and I

am born. I played soccer and baseball growing up, mixed in with surfing and

fishing, but I also enjoyed being in the garage sitting on the Yankee, trying to

pull in its ultra-stiff clutch from the extra clutch plates, my ears ring with it just sitting there. Today, the bike resides

inside with the receipts and letters that

accompany this story. I am into vintage bikes because, after I graduated col-

lege, I wanted a fun hobby and was

always around cars and motorcycles

growing up. My Dad said, “If I were you, I would get something affordable and easy to fix, nothing water-cooled with disc

brakes if you’re just starting out.” Well,

Yankees aren’t exactly a dime a dozen.

But I remembered his Can Am story and

thought, “If I’m going to get into a racing

my brother and I race Can Am 250s of

various years and it’s as fun a hobby as anyone could ask for. I just wish more

younger guys would get into it. The bikes are awesome, the stories are great and the people are the best!
