welcome to AHRMA Mag EDITOR IN CHIEF Alice Sexton ASSOCIATE EDITORS Patrick McGraw FASTLINES EDITOR Volunteer Position Open MARKETPLACE & SWAP MEET EDITOR Volunteer Position Open LAST PAGE GUEST EDITOR Don Emde Getting lapped in the Omega at my then hometown track, Willow Springs, running WSMC. Maybe about 2006?

Here’s to hoping everyone has enjoyed the inaugural issue of AHRMA Mag! Don’t know about all y’all- but seeing our member’s racing pix in color is pretty darn exciting. I mean– we don’t buy all of that fancy-pants racing gear or spiffy paint jobs and exotic parts for nothin’– let’s show it all off in glorious color! For those that don’t know me- here’s a bit of history of how I came to club racing. Growing up in Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay, my father was a hot rod mechanic. From a very early age, I spent many hours with him in the garage, handing him tools and holding this or that. We primarily worked on restoring carsa 1964 Pony Mustang for my mother, a 1956 Chevy for my brother, and a 1968 e-type Jag. In between the cars, we worked on the race boat, a Stevens hull, flat bottom ski-race runabout with a big block Ford that my Dad ran in the local MidAtlantic boat racing club. Weekends were spent going to the races, where we ran around with other kids, had cookouts and watched our father’s race, vintage and more modern boats, and if we were lucky, not have to work on the engine- or go homeafter the first heat races. Living in Washington, DC- the first thing I did when I learned to ride a motorcycle in 1985 was head to Summit Point to watch club motorcycle racing. As a street rider, I’d get my friends to go to the MARRC meetings in the winter to eat pizza and watch motorcycle racing. We didn’t know anyone there- but it was a fun way to spend a Saturday night. I eventually offered to do some graphics for MARRC and that way met some great people, that I’m still friends with today, who brought me into their world of vintage. I first witnessed AHRMA at Summit, wow! I could not believe the amazing and beautiful bikes- the entire line up from Team Obsolete right across pit road from Mr. Barber’s line up. The on-track battles and the excitement that unfolded in the pits as I stood RIGHT THERE, hearing nearly everything the racers said. Meeting racers like Thomas Stevens, Steven Thomas, The Legends on those BMW’s, Dave Roper and Larry Poons? Holy Cow! Surely- just like the rest of you- I was hooked. While yes- I did get my roadrace license and run MARRC, WSMC and AHRMA for a number of years- my back-marker mantra has been that I’m a better pit crew than a racer. As one of my friends from across the pond once said, “I was in no danger of winning a race!” We had a great time putting together this issue, especially researching the history of 350GP. If anyone wants to join the fun with AHRMA Mag just shoot me an email. Get Your Race Faces on the 2019 Season is Here!

My Mentor My Friend We sat in the pits planning our start, You planning your line and recommending mine, I will never forget what you said to me... You better stay out of my path, and all I could do was laugh, Jesse was a friend and a mentor who took me under his wing, Showed me how to be competitive, how to build a fast bike, race with confidence, race with pride and showed me what it’s like to really be alive. Now I line up on the grid with everything you taught me going through my mind,

Missing my friend who used to be right there with me on the line, Today I race your bike with your number painted on my sleeve, Wishing I could have just a few more laps with you my friend, Just a few more before you had to leave. Jesse Seary #271

Thanks Again...

I am proud to be part of AHRMA’s advancement into the age of Digital Media.

We are constantly working to upgrade the AHRMA website so that information is easier to find and, more importantly, up-to-date. Our member only Facebook page is very popular, as are the other outward-facing AHRMA FB pages, all of which serve as greats conduits for the exchange of racing information, ideas and friendly competitive dialogue. We’re currently working on developing a Questions & Answers page so that members with comments and/or questions can be directed to the appropriate AHRMA staff in order to get responses to you more quickly. Our AHRMA website and Facebook pages are where you’ll find the latest news and information. They are intended to be the quick release vehicles for results, announcements, track previews and event changes. So please use these digital formats to their utmost, as we are working hard to get the info you need to you more quickly. Big thanks to Brady Walker and all of our members who are making AHRMA look good at the International Motorcycle Shows! It seems they are having great success so we’ll definitely put IMS on the schedule for next season. And of course CONGRATULATIONS to Team Mojo and their support crew for a job well done down under at Phillip Island Luke Conner AHRMA Chairman of the Board and Interim National Roadrace Director 724.462.1854 Luke.Conner@ahrma.org

Just got off of the phone with Chairman Luke Conner, who called to give me the election results.

On behalf of myself and the others who were elected, I just want to say, “thank you.” Much of our efforts are done quietly and without anyone even knowing. It is every three years, when we seek your approval to continue our work, that we get a sense we are doing a good job. I am grateful that you approve of our efforts. I promise to continue, every day, to better the organization! Much has been made recently on social media, about internal conflicts at AHRMA, or that there is division among East and West, Road Race and Offroad, 2-stroke vs 4-stroke, modern or premier. For the most part I believe that this exists more on the keyboards of Facebook jockeys than at actual races. I have been joking with Thor that I want to hand out black stripes to certain social media experts. But I am just venting, and honestly, although we represent all AHRMA members, weight is given to folks who actually support the organization through participation, either by competing or volunteering. I am stunned when someone sends me a “post” made by someone who clearly is out to dispense hate rather than share their love of motorcycling. I was raised differently, and you will never catch me engaging in such unproductive nonsense. I can tell you that all of those who serve on your board have the best interest of the organization at the core! As we move forward, I will work to unite whatever differences exist in the organization, and to work on crafting exciting venues for participants to enjoy. At this moment, several of us are working on a couple of new things that will really advance our program. We know that the pool of participants is shrinking, and we want to attract new members. Enough has been said about this, but there are a couple of new attractions that I think most folks will be very happy about. Speaking of new, how about the new look of the magazine? When I got to the last page, and saw the 75 RM125, I was almost transported back in time. I loved that ad back in the day, and the RM I received for my birthday was just like that bike! Alice and Cynthia have done a wonderful job with the magazine, and the online content they are working on. Moreover, new information sheets for events and such have been created so that we can have a one stop shop for track info, sign up, direction, etc. Nice work, ladies, thanks! As I close, I am packing my suitcase for the first Trustee meeting of the year. We have much to discuss, and there are many opportunities for us to work on together that will raise the bar. Now that the election is over, we can shift focus to getting things done for the membership. I am ready to get to work. Thanks for giving me that chance! See you at the gate...

Congrats to Team Mojo: Maurice Candy (left), Tim Joyce (right) and their team for big wins at the 2019 International Island Classic at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit!

Panhandle Clash at the Pensacola Dirt Track – A Clashing Success!

The Panhandle Clash dirt track event was kicked off Thursday evening at the Spahr Brewery in Pensacola, FL. Almost 100 riders and fans crowded the building to help start the weekend’s racing activities and to get a glimpse of some of the talent participating. MC and track owner Rob McClendon and I entertained the crowd and helped build excitement for the racing to come. Riders came from over a dozen states to attend Rob McClendon’s inaugural Panhandle Clash at the Pensacola Dirt Track. Some of the racers who attended where: Rob “Bugs” Pearson, Cory Texter, Johnny Lewis, Brandon Price, Brandon Lee Robinson, Davis Fisher, Slammin’ Sam Halbert and many more. Quite a few came from up north to enjoy the somewhat warmer weather and great hospitality here down on the Gulf Coast. The event included classes for just about everyone: 50cc Pee-Wee, Pee-Wee Modified -65cc, Youth -85cc, Mad Dawg- 150cc, 250 AM, 450 AM, Open AM, Vet 40+, Pro-Am singles, Open Pro, Open Quad and of course, all of AHRMA Vintage classes. David Aldana AHRMA National Dirt Track Director 770. 653. 1909 davidaldana13@hotmail.com

Thursday night’s “Dinner with David” was a huge success with well over 100 attendees. Fans were lined up for autographs and brief stories from the past for hours. Top: Aldana with former AHRMA DT Director and now track owner and promoter of the Panhandle Clash, Robby Bobby McClendon. FEBRUARY 2019

Plans for improvements to our digital presence are starting to take place. First Things First We’ve added an event calendar, which can be found in the Schedules/Results dropdown menu as “Race Calendar”. I am still working through populating all of the events, but the end result will allow you to easily see what disciplines have events each month. You will get a preview when you hover over the event, and when you click on the event, you will get the event information. Please note, you will still be able to download and print the event preview if you want to, so you will have the best of both worlds. And... In order to get the word out more rapidly when newsworthy items are posted on the website, we are also publishing these items on the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) Facebook page and the AHRMA Members Only page. Next Up As I mentioned in the January issue, we are now using a form based system whenever appropriate, and those interested may now register for the RR National Awards Banquet in NOLA online. Please be aware, you must preregister for this event. The BIG News In January, I began sending out newsworthy email blasts to our membership. I am working towards this being a weekly occurrence so that all of the membership can stay abreast of what’s happening in AHRMA. Coming Up We are putting together plans to have a contact form, allowing visitors to the site and members to submit questions, comments, etc., which will be automatically routed to the appropriate AHRMA representative. We are also looking at a streamlined format for submitting rule change proposals electronically, with the notifications going to the members of the appropriate rules committee. I do have a request.... If you should see a mistake, or something doesn’t make sense to you on the website, PLEASE notify me by email or send me a message on Facebook. I REALLY appreciate the extra eyes.

Meet Dave Keister, AHRMA’s New National Roadrace Technical Inspector Dave comes to us with over a decade of experience as a motorcycle roadracing official, beginning as a tech inspector/grid marshal for ASRA and CCS, including Daytona 200 races. He also serves as a scrutineer at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials for AMA. Dave loves motorcycles, all of them! This love of the sport drives his dedication to keeping events as safe as possible. With a diverse background in many activities that require high levels of safety awareness– ranging from being a high-rise window cleaning safety supervisor, to stadium concert high steel rigging, to wilderness mountaineering and whitewater rescue– Dave has seen safety requirements from many angles and heights. The philosophy that Dave brings to this job is that, “I do this not only for the racers on the track, but for the families at home who are a big part of it too. It’s all about the people.”

FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF CROSSED WIRES Thank you to everyone who pointed out that I left off a photo credit for this famous image of Jimmy Weinert and captured by Charlie Morey. “I took that picture of Jimmy Weinert slamming Tony DiStefano at a National MX somewhere in Ohio in the late ‘70s. At the time, I was bummed; I knew it would be a cool picture, but I accidently sent the roll of film to CYCLE NEWS/West instead of taking it back to Georgia with me to CYCLE NEWS/East, where I worked at the time. Anyhow, they wound up using it on the cover, and we had to settle for others at CN/E. We were pretty competitive between the two editions. “ – Charlie Morey

LETTERS Dear Alice,, Thank you so much for including the KEEPING THE PAST FAST article in the January 2019 issue of AHRMA MAG. That article, Breakdown at Barber Vintage Festival 2010 written by Arthur Treff, truly captures the essence of vintage motorcycle racing. It is not only about men we all know, admire and respect, it is written by a man who has a special gift in his ability to see clearly that which makes these folks special --- and the ability to share that which he sees and feels with the rest of us. Mr. Treff somehow found a way to capture the essence of the innumerable experiences and relationships that exist under the umbrella of “vintage motorcycle racing” and to describe well that special physical and spiritual place -- and the people who exist and thrive there. It’s sort of like finding a window into the soul of a special people where many of the best qualities of our creation are in ample supply and --- although not on display --- there to see. The most wonderful part of this story is that, as special as are the subjects of this wonderful article, there are many more such standard bearers among us -- and they make this special place we share a most colorful and wonderful place to be. Thank you Alice and all the folks at AHRMA MAG --and thank you Arthur Treff. –Harold Seagle Hi Alice, I just finished reading the new AHRMA MAG, and want to congratulate you. It is a well thought out, informative and beautifully done with great color photos magazine that truly brings the people who love racing together. You did a great job. Looking forward to the next issue. –Stan & Pearl Friduss

Dear Three Amigas, I like the new look of our AHRMA Magazine. Thanks for all your hard work. –Mary McGee #4708 FEBRUARY 2019

Hello Alice, Wow! What a nice treat when I went to the mail box this afternoon. Such a beautiful edition of the periodical! While changes effect everyone differently, I really like the new look, feel and name of our publication. And you did it at a savings to boot. “KEEPING THE PAST FAST”... perrrrfect!!! As a long time member (but occasional racer due to “many irons in the fire”) I sent Cindy (shortly before she passed...rest her soul) my fee for a life membership as my way to help the organization with keeping History alive. The new mag is something I will truly enjoy for many years to come; a very nice additional benefit of being a Life Member. Please pass my compliments onto Cindy McLean and Elli Klein as well, for all the great work! After reading your opening comments on page 4, I read through the rest of the issue. Very surprised to see Mitch Boehm’s “LAST PAGE”. He is a wealth of Vintage History, no doubt about that. But thought he hid in Mexico when he skipped out on those of us still holding subscriptions to his deceased MOTO RETRO ILLUSTRATED magazine. – Regards, Ed Frank #1171

Hi, Checked out the new look of the AHRMA Mag online yesterday & it looks well done and quite slick, would have preferred keeping the old name “Vintage Views” though. I do object strongly to the full page Palmetto Armory assault rifle ad on page 47 in the January issue. I’m a target rifle owner & enjoy the sport but when I open the AHRMA magazine I want to read about non-current racing motorcycles, the people involved in the sport & related advertisements. No more gun ads please. –Mark Roler AHRMA #1086

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Editor’s Notes: If I missed anyone who wrote to my emailit was not intentional, just a simple senior moment on my part . The KEEPING THE PAST FAST tag line was developed by the AHRMA Media Committee. I cannot take credit for that, so kudos to go to them, and in particular, Greg Glevicky who penned the term. Thanks go to Cindy McLean for submitting the Breakdown at Barber story. Mark Roler- I have passed your concern on to the EC. Thank you for speaking up. Thank you everyone for the kind words. These are letters that were emailed to my AHRMA address. Some of these folks I know- others I don’t. I did not include any posts from the AHRMA Members FB page. My hope is that the new AHRMA Mag will be a vehicle for bringing us together by celebrating what we all love, vintage motorcycle racing and its amazingly colorful characters.

exhibiting AHRMA bikes in the Vintage section of the IMS Long Beach. After joining the IMS staff in September of 2018, Walker asked the show organizers if it would be beneficial for the show to have AHRMA participate in every stop of the tour—the answer was a resounding YES! “The IMS tour is one of the most popular consumer motorcycle shows in the world.” Walker explains. “This is a great opportunity to take advantage of their platform to spread the word about the excitement & camaraderie of AHRMA racing in an effort to enlist new fans & racers.” Now with support from the industryWWW.AHRMA.ORG

The 2018-2019 IMS tour cities include Long Beach, New York, Dallas, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Washington D.C. and Chicago. So far on this year’s tour, AHRMA has exhibited in Long Beach and Dallas. The Long Beach stop was led by Toad Town Racing’s Gary Swan and included race bikes owned by Tom Melancon, Christopher McEvoy, Brian Herzfeldt, Mike Blankenship & Thad Wolfe. “We handed out over a hundred copies FEBRUARY 2019

of Vintage Views and AHRMA stickers,” remarked Sorcerer Swan “The response was overwhelmingly positive.” Also at the show was the Vee Two Hailwood Replica Ducati, a limited production bike that ran its first AHRMA race at Barber last year. The Dallas round was coordinated by Albert Newmann who brought out a slew of vintage dirt machines with fellow racers Jay Huffman, Phil Pratt and Brad Kay. Roadracer Art Deaton made the trip from Lafayette with his SV650 and a handful of Luke Conner’s Harley roadracers. Dallas locals Jerrett Martin and Ricky Pearson filled in the rest of the exhibit with some of their fine roadracing machines. In addition, Greg Glevicky and the AHRMA Print Communications team created an awesome mini-poster showcasing the 2019 schedule. The exhibit was once again very well received, leaving the boys with many new connections AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

by the end of the weekend and almost no voice after speaking with so many show attendees. “Get me a margarita!” Deaton exclaimed after the long day Saturday. There are four remaining stops starting with Cleveland on the weekend of January 25, 2019. Greg Glevicky will be coordinating in Cleveland with Gary Braun taking on Minneapolis and Bob Burns leading efforts in Chicago. Thank you to the IMS staff for rolling out the red carpet and taking care of the AHRMA crew in each city. Your support of vintage racing is very much appreciated! The early days of Grand Prix racing saw numerous European motorcycle manufacturers battling for bragging rights. Norton, AJS and Velocette from England, NSU from Germany, and MV Agusta, Gilera and Moto Guzzi from Italy were podium regulars. They were building “works” bikes; factory supported, one-off racing machines. TT Assen 1970 - 350cc class, Giacomo Agostini ( #1Italy), Renzo Pasolini (#2 Italy), and Phil Read (#8 Great Britan).

From the moment the second motorcycle was built, motorcycle racing has existed in one form or another. Whether on dirt, grass, ice, or asphalt, racing has been enjoyed worldwide for generations. We are

fortunate that AHRMA celebrates most of these disciplines. But have you ever perused the rule book and wondered what some of the classes are all about, or how they came to be? On the roadrace side, the GP classes are the heart and soul of what is “historic” about the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. The letters, “GP” are an abbreviation of the words, “Grand Prix,” which literally translated from French means, “Grand Prize.” The Grand Prix Road Racing World Championship was born in Europe in 1949 with the establishment of a sanctioning body, the FIM, or Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme. Classes were divided by engine displacement, with 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc races being run for solo bikes. Sidecar classes of 350cc and 500cc were also established. While the Harley vs. Indian rivalry was 22

heating up in the U.S., with big displacement bikes racing on dirt tracks and beach courses, the European style of racing adopted smaller, lighter, more nimble bikes, and raced them on street courses. The Isle of Man TT course is likely the most famous of these, winding more than 37 miles through city streets and picturesque countryside. The early days of Grand Prix racing saw numerous European motorcycle manufacturers battling for bragging

rights. Norton, AJS and Velocette from England, NSU from Germany, and MV Agusta, Gilera and Moto Guzzi from Italy were podium regulars. They were building “works” bikes; factory supported, one-off racing machines. It wasn’t until 1959, when Honda entered a bike at the Isle of Man, that the Japanese entered the fray. These days, of course, Japanese bikes are a dominant force. Giacomo Agostini, with 15 world championships to his credit, is among the most famous GP racers of the day. But riders like Mike Hailwood, John Surtees, Phil Reed and Jim Redman are spoken of with almost religious reverence. The AHRMA Grand Prix classes seek to honor the rich history and tradition of European road racing, offering spectacular racing on magnificent machines. It’s no secret that one of AHRMA’s perennial challenges is attracting new racers and retaining existing ones. Consensus in the roadrace paddock is that grid sizes, in some classes at least, have been declining. Racing is an expensive sport, and economic factors are a variable every season. Add that to the fact that riders andmachines are aging, while parts for exotic, vintage motorcycles are getting harder to find. And some owners are less inclined to put expensive, one-of-a-kind bikes through the rigors of a race season. Our parts are wearing out too. And at some point, it’s just time to hang up the helmet and put the leathers away for good. So, against that backdrop, AHRMA trustees face the task of keeping the membership vibrant, while honoring the “historic part of AHRMA’s legacy. Well, Trustee Arthur Kowitz has a plan he thinks might just bring some fresh energy into our roadracing program while keeping AHRMA “true to its roots.” “We can’t turn back the hands of time,” Said Kowitz. “But maybe if we shined a spotlight and focused on one class, it would kindle some interest and FEBRUARY 2019

invigorate roadracing one class at a time.” Welcome to the 2019 AHRMA Vintage Cup. The Vintage Cup will take one roadracing class per season and “enhance” it with special coverage in AHRMA Mag as well as features in Roadracing World magazine. John Ulrich, publisher of Roadracing World, has always been a fan of vintage racing. “John is anxious to promote this,” says Kowitz. Riders and bikes in the 350GP class will become AHRMA rock stars for the 2019 season. The announcement of the Vintage Cup has created a buzz in the paddock and racers who might not have considered racing 350 GP are “scouring the rules to see what fits in the formula of that class,” said Kowitz. “It’s working and I think it will generate an interesting grid.”Kowitz’s first thought was to focus on AHRMA’s flagship class, 500 Premier. However, at the suggestion of Cindy Cowell, the 350GP class was ultimately chosen for the inaugural Vintage Cup, because, said Kowitz, “350GP is inherently more popular. There are more bikes legal for it and there are more of them around.” Of course, spotlighting a racing class wouldn’t AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

be possible without some first-rate sponsorship. And that’s where Kenny Cummings and NYC Norton come in. NYC Norton already sponsors 500 Premier and Formula 750. But when the idea of featuring a true GP class was floated to Kenny, he saw it as an opportunity to bring some warranted exposure to a “true vintage class.” “I’m doing it because my true love are the Grand Prix classes,” said Cummings. The cherry on top of the 2019 AHRMA Vintage Cup will be a symbol worthy of winning a 350 GP championship. “A big, badass trophy” is in the works, promises Cummings. “We all want an AHRMA championship to really mean something.” “This is the start of making a win or a podium in AHRMA significant again.” If the 2019 AHRMA Vintage Cup stimulates grid sizes and generates the exposure AHRMA seeks, we can expect more featured classes and enhanced trophies for seasons to come. “We want to make sure it succeeds on the first lap in order to make next year and years after succeed as well,” said Kowitz. VINTAGE ROADRACING MISSION STATEMENT: AHRMA’s mission is to recreate and preserve the vintage era of roadracing, including the sights, sounds, smells and camaraderie. Many consider the 50-year time span – from the 1930s to the mid-‘70s – the golden age of roadracing. We recognize that the oldest of these motorcycles are the least available; therefore only small numbers are likely to participate in most events, and some events may have no examples. However, AHRMA is committed to maintaining a venue to showcase these early motorcycles, no matter how few. Vintage roadrace classes are broken down into five basic groups: Grand Prix: Period GP racers and appropriately modified street machines from 1968 and earlier. Classes include 200 GP Plus, 250 GP, 350 GP, 500 GP, 500 Premier.

RIDER PRoFILE

In 1947 in a room over Al and Martha Rodi’s Indian Motorcycle Dealership in Chicago their new son Beno pops out. Beno is a good baby. He can even change his own diapers at a very early age. Sorry there is no actual proof of this, it just might be a bad Joke. In 1951 father Al is asked by Indian Motorcycles to take over the Atlanta shop and off Beno goes to Georgia. The 50’s are when Royal Enfield buys out Indian Motorcycles and soon Al’s floors will be filled with British Motorcycles. The Motorcycle business is booming. Al’s number of shops grows to 4 Honda shops and a shop with BSA, Triumph, Norton and Royal Enfield Motorcycles. This is also a period in motorcycle shop history when shops stocked parts– so to this day Beno has a warehouse full of British parts– Go Team Salvage! Beno– filled with the old school Italian blood line– is full of all the passions that could create Ferraris, Ducatis, the Sistine Chapel and food you would fly 10 hours to eat. From an early age Beno works in all of the family shops and was actually machining the 26

heads for the valves and cylinders for bore jobs when he was only 8 years old. By his early teens, Beno grabs a 350 Royal Endfield and heads off to the local Enduro circuits, thus starting his amazing racing career. The hook is set, if he’s not off racing somewhere, he’s home making enough money to go racing. Today, at age 71, Beno has won 6 National Number 1 Plates with AHRMA in the 2018 season: Premier 500 Expert MX, Premier 350 Expert MX, Premier Light weight MX Expert, Premier Open Twins MX Expert. In Trials he stole the Rigid Championship and in Dirt Track he is National Number One in the Dinosaur class. So, with a 60-year career of racing its mind boggling what he has accomplished. Some of the great racers can be hard on motorcycles and women. Beno’s first two wives only made it to the 5-year mark. So as racers trouble shoot problems, Robin, Beno’s wife of 29 years, would have to wait 6 years before the marriage vows. Shipping bikes to Europe in the 80’s Beno and Robin could be seen riding a Goldstar to the most famous tracks– pulling the lights off– racing the Goldstar– then putting the lights back on to ride home. And in the process, earning

enough points to get the license to run the Isle of Man T.T. At the Isle Beno breaks the top 20 the first time there with a 13th place finish. Just another day in the life of Beno Rodi. If not racing a herd of the coolest bikes at the track in a single event or winning the prestige’s AHRMA Iron Man awards, Beno can be found laying out the enduro tracks or helping any way he can. One of the best cooks in AHRMA, his B.B.Q. is usually full of pork chops and his blender full of margaritas. In the beginning there was Beno Rodi. He helped the AMA write their Vintage rulebook. SC REGION TX VINTAGE GRAND PRIX MX/XC

WORDS: ALBERT NEWMANN PHOTOS: SHARON BEAN, ALBERT NEWMANN

The weekend of December 1-2, 2018 was our regions first ever attempt for a regional only Cross-Country AHRMA race.

With sponsorship funding by Jimmy Stark and Mike Parker we were able to initiate a regional championship series for this discipline, so the search was on to find a location to have our own regional race. We had to look no further than the Huffman Farm in Donie, TX where our Texas Vintage Grand Prix motocross course lies. The central Texas terrain offers up various selections of dirt as well as a fair amount of rock, petrified wood, trees, brush, and creeks. Veteran course designers Keith Parker and Jay Huffman along with Heath Parker, Randy Howell, Greg Conn, and Ricky Parker laid out a challenging yet fun four-mile loop for the event. The race kicked off on Saturday morning and with forty bikes on the line the flag was dropped, motorcycles started, and we were off and racing! Yamaha mounted Heath Parker racing the Post Vintage 200 Expert class jumped to an early lead and 28

never looked back. Designing a layout obviously had some benefits but Heath was head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. The race to watch was the second and third place riders as Bubba Dennis fought the constant bumping of his rear wheel from Ricky Parker to hold on for second place overall as Ricky placed third overall. Derrick Wedding of Tyler, Texas placed fourth overall and won the modern support expert class. Other notable class winners were Charlene Campbell holding off Chance Knight, Bob Hodge, and Randy Howell for the Modern Support Intermediate class. Sheila Monk won the Post Vintage Women’s Expert class and from Denver, Colorado Rick Field won the Post Vintage 60 Plus Novice Class. Jon Anderson from Bastrop, Texas lead his Kawasaki to first place in the Sportsman Open Novice class and it was San Antonio, Texas native Mitchell Williams aboard his Suzuki winning the Vintage 60 Plus Novice Class. The feedback from the course was very positive and future plans are to incorporate another two-mile section of the

property in the coming year. The BA South Central Regional AHRMA MX Championship Series came to a close this weekend as our Vintage Motocross program was underway about an hour upon completion of the Cross-Country event. Highlights from the day included a great battle in the first race of the day in the Vintage 50 Plus Intermediate group. Brian Oakley and Bobby Phillips battled closely in moto one as well as one of our Novice riders Tom Shackelford was having the ride of the year on this day. Oakley maintained the lead over Phillips for the moto win and overall on the day and it was Shackelford edging out John McCullough and Mark Smithard for the overall in the 50 Plus Novice Group. Bob Bean, of Osceola, Indiana seemed to never leave Texas following the Rio Bravo National earlier in the month and stayed around to

race our regional race with us. Easily the most entertaining race, the Vintage 60 Plus Expert class, as it was Bean and local racer Kevin Brown making a return to racing dueling from corner to corner. The start of the race was conspicuous as both Bean and Billy Click jumped the rubber band start and upon restart had their backs to the band. It didn’t matter for either rider as by the end of lap one each were in contention and up front with the pack leaders. It was Click taking on the 2018 National 70 Plus Expert champion Skip Kennedy, but on this day Click rode flawlessly and took his Husqvarna to 1-1 finishes and the overall. Bean on the final lap of each race was able to open up a gap over Brown and won his class with 1-1 finishes. Sundays Post Vintage Program was equally as exciting and competitive. Eddie Lee and Ben Brown swapped moto wins in the Post FEBRUARY 2019

Vintage 60 Plus Expert Class with Lee taking the overall as Lee passed Brown on the very last lap of moto two to secure the win. Bob Bean and Kevin Brown once again battled in the Post Vintage 60 Plus Expert with the same results and a Bean win. Houston, Texas racer Buddy Lavin won the Post Vintage 50 Plus Novice class over Mark Smithard and it was Husqvarna mounted Ray McFarland securing moto wins in the Post Vintage 60 Plus Novice class over John Mathewson. In the 70 Plus Expert Post Vintage group it was Brooks Blair of Dallas, Texas coming back to win moto two over Jim Rohn in the Post Vintage 70 Plus Intermediate group. The day also featured some of the incoming Next Generation Series class bikes as Brandon Glenn put on a clinic over a super-fast gate of riders in our modern series motocross group. For an early December weekend, we could

not have asked for better weather with sunny skies and temperatures nearing 70 each day. It was a pleasure to see license plates from Colorado and Indiana coming down to get a final dose of racing in for the year. The staff of the Texas Vintage Grand Prix facility were outstanding, the prep of the courses was perfect, and the overall rider participation for the weekend was over 170 entries. A perfect ending to end our year! We are all looking forward to returning to racing next May 4-5 for another Motocross and Cross-Country Regional event at this facility as well as a National Vintage and Post Vintage Motocross race the weekend of November 9-10, 2019. SOUTH CENTRAL REGION 2018 WRAP UP & WINTER UPDATE

WORDS & PHOT0: ALBERT NEWMANN

FEBRUARY 2019

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

With the 2018 race season ending I suspect many of you are reviewing the 2019 calendar

of events and beginning the sort out phase of your race bikes. From a regional perspective 2018 was a success and our venture into our regional championship series for Cross Country went well! For 2019 we are hoping to expand to a regional championship for Trials so stay tuned for that one in the coming months. As for the national schedule of events the 2019 schedule is nearly the same as last year with one exception of moving the AHRMA year end closing race from Rio Bravo to the Texas Vintage Grand Prix Course at Huffman Farm just up the road in Donie, Texas. We will kickstart the year with a National Cross Country and Trials event at the Circle Bar Ranch Motorsports Park in Fluvanna, Texas the weekend of March 2-3. Eddie and Deidre Parks are the host and the property is renowned for Cross Country racing in the Southwest so we are very excited to bring an event to this facility. The terrain is primarily composed of cap rock and the layout will feature flat top mesa’s with ravines and washes so expect a fair amount of elevation change. It will be a six-mile loop that will incorporate part of the motocross track as a start and finish area. Jay Huffman and his crew are laying out the trials lines which will feature the challenging west Texas terrain. It is highly recommended you all run tire sealant or bib mousse tubes so be prepared! Our regional program for Vintage and Post Vintage Motocross will have a slight change to the format for competing for a series award. Currently there are eight planned events consisting of six national regional events as well as two regional only events. To qualify for the series awards you must compete in one of the regional only events and the minimum number of races will remain at six for this year. We will continue to offer ten bonus points to your overall score at the regional only events. The Cross-Country regional series championship qualifications for 2019 will require a minimum of ten events of the thirteen scheduled for championship and ten bonus points for the regional only events. You must compete in one of the two regionals only Cross-Country events. Stay tuned as we look at the addition of another regional only motocross event for 2019. Per AHRMA national rule changes any AHRMA member will be eligible to compete for South Central Regional AHRMA Championships. The front end of our schedule for 2019 after the “Circle Bar Ranch” race in March will follow up with a national event at Desoto Motorsport Park in Grand Cane, Louisiana the weekend of April 6-7. The following weekend will be the vintage extravaganza in Jefferson, Texas for the Riverport National the weekend of April 12-14. Our first regional only event will occur May 4-5 in Donie, Local fast expert rider Keith Klump #21K old-school stylin’ aboard his CZ. WWW.AHRMA.ORG

Texas at the Texas Vintage Grand Prix Course for both Cross Country and Motocross. Schedule information is available on the AHRMA website, our South-Central website and Facebook page. The off seasons most talked about subject was the addition of the Next Gen Motocross Series to AHRMA racing. Regionally, we have secured “Next Gen” race at the famous Oak Hill Raceway. We are very excited at scheduling part of our new series at one of the more highly regarded race facilities in the country. The track has relatively new ownership and are very interested in supporting our venture with this new series. They are aware of the program we run and will set up the track for our style of racing as well as dirt preparation. This will be a joint venture weekend with the Texas Vintage Racing Club with the Next Gen National on Saturday October 19 and TVRC will have their club race on Sunday October 20. This is very exciting to have such a highly regarded venue cater to our program as well as a partner program weekend with TVRC. Watch for details and support program racing as this date gets closer. For 2018 our region was well represented with vintage and post vintage National Series Cross Country and Motocross championship winners. Our list of champions from the region for these series are as follows: Bryan Johnson, Zahn Lewis, Banyon Patterson, Trampas Parker, Lloyd Loux, Brooks Blair, Tom O’Kelly, Danielle Ballard, Chris Jetton, Mark Smithers, Wesley Wyman, Eddie Parks, Greg Conn, Devon Long, Brian Oakley, Danny Wirt, Charlene Campbell, Sheila Monk, Albert Newmann, Alan Drane, Joe Morgan, Rick Fisher, Jason Elder, Rob Springer, Whitey Parker, Mike Parker, Michael Welden, and Skip Kennedy. Congratulations to you all! Regional Championship award winners will be recognized in the next issue as well as available on line at ahrmasc.org and the regional Facebook page. The 2018 BA Motorsports South Central Regional AHRMA MX Championship Series and the South Central Regional Cross-Country Series awards will be presented at Diamond Don’s Riverport National on Saturday April 13 in the pavilion at 6:30 PM. Lastly, we have some new sponsors coming on board for 2019 with Desoto Motorsport Park and Chance Knight. Thank you all for the contributions for making our regional series possible and promoting vintage racing. Currently we are looking for a “named” series sponsor for the Regional Cross-Country series so feel free to contact me if interested. Keep it on the pipe! Albert Newmann newmann.albert@gmail.com

Very nice barn find motorcycle that sports an earlier repaint on the tank and fenders. WITH GUEST EDITOR DON EMDE My interest in motorcycle history started early when I was growing up in the San Diego area. My father, Floyd Emde, had a successful career, which included a Daytona 200 victory, and he had so many great stories about racing back in those years. Something that stood out was how many people from San Diego had also won Daytona. He told me about when he won the 200 on a new 648 Indian Big Base Scout, but also how his good friend Ed Kretz had also won it back in 1937. Kretz then lived in the Los Angeles area, but was born in San Diego County. I also heard about San Diego natives Brad Andres and Joe Leonard who both won multiple times on the beach at Daytona in the 1950s. By the mid-1960s I was following the action when San Diegans Ralph White and Cal Rayborn each scored wins on Leonard Andres HarleyDavidson KRs. By then, I was racing and was well motivated to add my name to the list of Daytona winners. In 1972, I was able to achieve my goal, making Floyd and I the other father and son to have both won the Daytona 200. Feeling the great history of the motorcycle sport should be recorded, I started a little publishing business in 1990. My first book was about what I knew best, the history of the Daytona 200. A few years later I also wrote and published a book about Cannon Ball Baker’s historic record ride in 1914 from San Diego to New York City and am currently working on the history of motorcycle boardtrack racing in America. – Don Emde 1972 Daytona 200 winner Don Emde also participated in AHRMA’s BMW Battle of the Legends series back in the 1990s. Above: Don Emde is interviewed by Roxy Rockwood following his victory of the 1972 Daytona 200. Photo: Don Emde Collection Left: Don’s publications are available thru EmdeBooks.com
