Who knew there was actually a thing called a “reverse mullet?” I was just kinda making that up last issue until some guy named Stuart (wouldn’t tell me his last name, except goes by “fury3”) called me on it. So now I’m wondering if we go with “GP Shift Mullet?” Whateves, dudes. As we come sliding full bore into the racing season, we say hello Curt Comer, our new ED. Curt was not exactly comfortable with the cover and feature, however graciously accepted that just this once, he had to step into the AHRMA limelight. I know that everyone will give him a wide-open-throttle welcome and lend him a hand where needed. We also welcome Curt’s boss and handler. Dewanna Comer brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to AHRMA as she has worked side-by-side with Curt since they started their motorcycling adventures together. She did a fantastic job with last minute edits to this issue, and as you know, I can use whatever help I can get! As far as I can tell, we’re extremely lucky to have them both on our team. Big shout-out to Glenn Hershey for his ultra-cool bike build article. This is the stuff we live for. As none of us are writers by trade, stepping up to write and submit a story like this takes a lot of time, commitment and a passion for our organization. Is that Black Widow's bite deadly? Once again, our Ironman Melton comes through with an extraordinary piece about bumping bars with some pretty darn cool AHRMA MX racers. Hey! So, what do y’all THE KEEPINGPAST FAST! think about the Flashback page? I’m just loving it. Where before, on one page, would you be able see everything from historical factory prototype bikes to “hold my beer?” Ha! Only in AHRMA! And if you don’t see your submission in this issue, I promise warn you it’s coming soon in another issue. Truly, thank you to everyone who has stepped up to help make this a cool publication.

Honoring Cindy Cowell at the Daytona 200 Monument I'd like to start by saying thank you to all who made this plaque possible (you know who you are). Cindy Cowell will be forever etched into history on the Daytona 200 Monument (located on Daytona Beach, the birthplace of speed). She made a huge contribution and impact to the sport of motorcycle racing with her AHRMA dedication and passion. I had the honor and privilege to work with Cindy for the past 16 years. She was not only the boss, but a dear friend (to many). She helped more people achieve their dreams and goals in AHRMA, and life in general, than anyone else I have met. I started attending races with the Indian guy, Ralph Wessell. I was brand new to motorcycle racing; I grew up riding horses and going to horse shows. The experiences are similar, but very much different too. I loved the races from the very beginning, started volunteering and became very close with her and the workings of an AHRMA race weekend. We grew to have a special bond.

I miss our many laughs and chats about the events that took place over the course of our race weekends, which were numerous. As you all know, these events can be very trying and very rewarding all at the same time. Cindy tried to make sure that each and every one of us had an experience we were proud to take home and share with our friends and family. She was a "racetrack mother" to many. I'm not alone when I say we miss Cindy very much. On behalf of myself, Cindy, Andrew, and the AHRMA staff, I want to thank you for your generosity and your help to make this dream come true. Cindy loved this monument and she took Andrew there to show him. I know she would be very proud to be such a huge part of it. Sometimes life is shorter than we think. Since this is the case with Cindy Cowell, or as I used to call her our "fearless leader," I bid her farewell and I know she is watching over all of us still, but in a different capacity now. In closing I would like to thank Bev and Dick Klamforth (3-time winner of the Daytona 200* 70 years ago this year) and the whole Klamforth family for having the vision to build the monument and the dedication to our sport of motorcycle racing and all the people who enjoy our way of life. We now have a sacred spot to honor all those we've lost and those who carry on their legacies. I am honored to be a part of the Daytona 200 Monument. Join us on this beautiful piece of history in the making. See you at the races, Amy Jacques *If you would like to be a part of the monument and get a plaque for yourself or friends, please contact myself or Bev Klamforth at 614-579-5512, or visit Daytona200monument.com.

SCORES & MORE A Letter from the Chairman.

I want to thank everyone that came out to the Carolina Motorsports Park roadrace last weekend and made it a huge success. We had over 500 entrants and a really good weekend. It was our new Executive Director Curt Comer’s first day on the job and boy did he get right in the middle of it all. Curt took the Fast and Safe Roadracing School on Friday and then met with others the over the weekend. AHRMA’s new interim Roadrace Director, Faynisha Pentecost kept things on task and pulled off an excellent event. And by the way, Faynisha has secured another sponsor, Rock Auto will be supplying 10,000 free AHRMA event wristbands. Thanks, Faynisha, this is a huge help. Seems like like our new tech program is now getting sorted and went well with Nick Bailey stepping up to be RR Head Tech Inspector. Diamond Don’s 17th Annual AHRMA Riverport International Vintage Motocross event is going to be a block buster event as always, coming up the weekend after next. Sounds like a huge crowd so far. As Chairman of the Board, I want to welcome Ellen Voermans to the Board of Trustees. She is replacing Patrick Riley who recently left AHRMA. Ellen is coming on just in time to get her feet wet with rules proposals. Arthur Kowitz and Fred Guidi are scheduling a trip to Bristol Speedway in Tennessee to continue the discussions about an AHRMA Vintage Festival for all disciplines for 2020. We’ll be keeping you up-to-date on the progress of what could be a great event for everyone. Thanks again to our members, volunteers, and support staff without whom we would not exist. I look forward to the next time we meet. Luke Conner AHRMA Chairman of the Board 337. 280. 1066 Luke.Conner@ahrma.org

It’s hard to imagine that we are staring down the 4th event on our National Offroad Schedule.

So much has been happening in such rapid succession, that if it were not for Saddleback East’s Mitch Barnes or Roger Boardwine, I wouldn’t have anything to ride this season. Before I dive in, I would like to welcome Ellen Voermans to the AHRMA Board. I am excited to have her as a part of the team, and to take advantage of her drive and connections to get post vintage off of the ground in the northwest! Ellen is a long-time AHRMA competitor, and a fast one at that. You will be hearing more from her as time progresses. But for now, please say hello when you see her at the races! She has a lot of great ideas, and I am anxious to work with her! Every season brings a new challenge, and this year it is scoring. Our goal over the winter was to close a software gap that required poor Thor to hand enter each entry. This is why Thor missed every national practice during the last 10 seasons, and why you had to step over his lifeless body on your way to the trophy presentation. But I digress. After much testing and programming by folks much smarter than most of us, we thought we had it nailed. So far what we have done is made it impossible for Thor to get any sleep. As is the case when anyone leaves a company, we have put the blame on Lambo, but the truth is that we have more work to do. The saying that no good deed goes unpunished is true in this case! Please be patient, we know that someone named Vlad the Impaler, did not beat you in the fifth moto of the Historic 250 Novices. We also know that you did not pay $25,000.00 to pre enter the +70 Experts at the Jammers. We will get this fixed as well, but it is going to take a bit more time on our part and a little patience on yours. Just a reminder that rules proposals are due May 24th. So, all of you who have called and made a suggestion, now is the time to give it some more thought and have it submitted to the board. Note the form and deadline for submissions in this issue. Well, this is it for me this month. I am boarding a plane for Diamond Don’s and looking forward to working with Curt for the first time. As always, there is that ever-present threat of rain, but I know that it will not deter us from having a good time! Be safe and we will see you at the gate!

Thadd Wolfe and Luke after a pile of races at Barber having more fun than the law should allow. Looking forward to the 2nd Annual Handshift Shootout: Harley vs. Indian sponsored by American Iron Magazine this year at the 15th Annual Barber Vintage Festival, October 4 - 6, 2019.

The Weather, AHRMA Dirt Tracks, and Race Bikes are Starting to Warm Up

The month of May, takes AHRMA's Dirt Track National scene back to two great race tracks. Starting May 4 at Tar Heel Speedway NC, and May 18, at Aonia Pass M/X Park, Washington,Georgia. The weather has started to warm up, along with many vintage racers and bikes. Tar Heel, has one of the best racing surfaces around. And, I can't say enough about Rick Lovett, (promoter) who personally makes sure the short track at Tar Heel Speedway is properly prepped, for some good close racing. As for the Washington, GA track, bring your TT bike. The Atlanta M/C Club hosting the event, and has redesigned and built a new TT track, that will run before the Short Track. (Both TT and ST are National races) The Georgia red clay– is red, and neat to race on. Looking forward to some great races– and great AHRMA camaraderie. David Aldana AHRMA National Dirt Track Director 770. 653. 1909 davidaldana13@hotmail.com Georgia Red Clay at Aonia Pass

5/18/2019 Dirt Track Event Moved to Aonia Pass MX PLEASE NOTE, PER NATIONAL DIRT TRACK DIRECTOR, DAVID ALDANA: Due to decibel noise restrictions at Callahan Speedway in Callahan, Florida, we have arranged to hold our event scheduled for May 18, 2019 at Aonia Pass MX Park, Washington, Georgia. We have also added a TT race in conjunction with the Short Track. These races will both take place on Saturday, May 18th.

This and That

The beginning of April this year marks 6 months with AHRMA. Has it been everything that I expected? Pretty much. While my primary goal was to make the site more user friendly, and to address the biggest complaint I heard from our members (I can never find what I'm looking for), I also wanted to eliminate the need for downloadable pdfs, and automate processes where possible. Your feedback leads me to believe that I have made some headway, and while I know there's more to do, hopefully people are finding what they need. Another initiative was to keep our membership informed and up to date. All News posts now auto-publish to Facebook and Twitter, and are also sent out same day via our email newsletter. So when important news needs to get out to a portion, or to all of the membership, it is available the same day through the website, and by social media and email. Most of you by now have noticed that we have a Race Calendar with links to event pages reflecting the event preview that once was only found on the attached preview pdfs. These events include links to the event preview, poster, pre-entries, and once the event is over, results. You can get to the events 3 different ways - from the All Discipline Schedules & Results page, from the Schedules & Results pages for each discipline, or (of course) from the Race Calendar. Recently, an automated classifieds system was launched as AHRMA Swap Meet and is free to use. We have buy/sell categories which can grow as our needs grow and I hope you find it an easy and useful way to buy and sell your racing stuff. If you offer a service, such as transporting motorcycles to events and you want your ad to last more than 30 days, let me know, and I'll help out. Otherwise, once you create an ad, it is reviewed and then approved to appear on the website for 30 days. You'll be notified when the ad is due to expire, and you can easily renew. Many of you have made use of the new Contact form for which notifications are routed according to the topic and options selected on the form. The intent is to get your questions answered more quickly and by the right people. The topic list and routing is evolving as needed based on questions asked. For the 2020 Rule Change Proposal initiative, it made sense to streamline this process and give the members a way to submit rule change proposals electronically. While you can still use the rule change form found in the back of the AHRMA Handbook, the online form allows you to document all pertinent information for your proposed rule change and upload supporting images and documents. This will all be delivered directly to Curt Comer for distribution to the appropriate rule committees. It's been a busy 6 months, but between this and that, I'm loving every minute of it!

FASTLINES Call for 2020 Rules Proposals

Each year, AHRMA's Board of Trustees reviews class and organizational rules, and considers any changes to be instituted for the following season. Any member in good standing may submit a proposal for a rule change. To do, please use the "Proposal for Rule Change" form found near the the AHRMA Handbook, or on the AHRMA website under Member Resources > Forms and Information. Members are then invited to comment on the decisions prior to the final vote, which takes place at the October Board meeting. The deadline for 2020 rules proposal submissions is May 24, 2019. www.ahrma.org * Please note that a rule proposal may be sent to the National Office at any time up to the May deadline.

I learned to ride on a new Honda Minitrail 50 in 1969. I still have the one that I restored back in ’94 and did this goofy thing to commemorate the restoration. Also, back in ’73, I was riding trials aboard a Montesa Cota 123. No helmet and long hair were both in style at the time! –Eric Kraft AHRMA #1013524 A 1967 Steens Hodaka SS 90cc. I raced in the California desert from ‘67 to ‘69, completed the SoCal Run with the infamous downhill, the Jackass Enduro and the Viewfinders GP at Albertson Movie Ranch. When I moved to Michigan in ‘69, it became a scrambler and I even did ice races in the winter. This bike was the prototype that was used in the magazine tests and it is still in my garage. It has had a couple of updates: 100cc motor, extended swing arm and 19" front wheel. –Gulliford Member #537

The bike is a 1973 Norton Commando 850 that I bought in 1986, from the original owner with 1700 miles on it and at the time it was my daily rider. Seeing how we thought we were pretty fast in the canyons, we rode our street bikes out to the races at Willow Springs to check it out and immediately got horny to race. I stripped off the lights, lost the kickstarter and center stand, added a belly pan and wired up my faithful old Commando, keeping the license plate on it for aerodynamics ~ ha! Importantly, as an homage, I rode the bike to work this morning and I’m happy to report the bike has aged a lot better than I have! –Greg Tomlinson Member #14562

Greetings from rural Tennessee! As I sit here trying to construct my first submission as Executive Director (ED) to AHRMA, I cannot

help but reflect on my first AHRMA weekend back in 1990 and the fun I’ve had through the years competing in Road Race, Motocross, Cross Country, Dirt Track and Trials. I remember when Dave Lamberth became AHRMA’s ED the first time and we traveled together to AHRMA race weekends. Somehow, along the way, Dave ended up with the Honda SL125 based racer originally built by Donnie Warf and me. Memories… As your new ED I am very much looking forward to serving this fine organization by keeping motorcycle racing history alive. It won’t be easy to fill Dave’s shoes, as he has done an incredible job navigating AHRMA through some challenging legal and financial times with dedication and integrity. Given Dave and I don’t wear the same size shoes, I will not try to fill his shoes, but commit to working with the board and membership to assist AHRMA in fulfilling its purpose, and providing the best possible vintage racing experiences for our members. Growing up in a motorcycle family, I was introduced to motorcycles at a young age. I would pit with my mom for my Dad and Uncle at enduros. In 1969 I swung my leg over a bike for the first time, and my first competition was in 1970. I have been an active rider/enthusiast ever since. Some accomplishments over the years include 1981 USA Trials Champion, 1984 USA Team member – TdN, Poland, +40 AMA Dirt Track Grand Champion, Super Senior A National Enduro Champion, etc. Anyone who has seen me at the races has likely seen my wife Dewanna, as she has accompanied me to various races in the past 34 years. Many of you may also remember our little girl Hannah. Well, she’s not so little anymore, and through her we now have our first grandson, Cohen. On the career side of things, I am a degreed Financial Accountant with many years of corporate and management experience. After a winter of much rain, I am dusting off my race bikes and looking forward to meeting everyone at the races! So that’s about it for me. AHRMA relies on many talented folks who volunteer their time for the benefit of all of us who race – thanks so much for all you do …and thanks in advance for your support as I get up to speed as your new ED. Reading Alice’s editorial last month got me thinking; where do Cross Country race bikes get their start? Well for me, being a “Can-am guy” since 1976 (TNT O/R), I always had a ‘thing’ for them and I noticed a definite lack of Historic class entries in general in our MidAtlantic Cross Country series. So began my quest to build an appropriate ride to try and make a difference. But why Can-am you may ask? Aren’t there better marques from that era? Maybe so, but it didn’t matter, Can-am is what I had back in the day and my desire now is to come up with something I can relate to from that time period. Besides that, how many MX-3’s do you see at ANY type of race? Dare to be Different! Back then I felt Can-am was, in fact, a poor-kids-Penton --- equal to but cheaper than the Europeans, lighter and better than the Japanese offerings, with the bonus of class leading power. I always liked the radical look of the 1977 MX-3, dubbed the Black Widow for its black/red-orange scheme with spider web stripe graphics. And the idea of racing the first generation long travel suspension is appealing. Where to find one? Sure, I see a museum piece pop up once in a great while for some ‘unobtainium’ price but that’s not for me. Some guys and girls (yes, girls in the Mid-Atlantic!) recommission a barn-find bike, clean out the carb and mouse house, pry on some tires and if the wheels don’t wobble too badly, they are ready to race. And that’s fine, but unfortunately (for my wallet) that is not how I roll. Seems to me, 1977 MX and Qualifier bikes/parts are one of the scarcer Canadian years, being one year only models. When searching for a couple years proved fruitless, I had to take a different approach. A 1977 Qualifier frame and forks came up on EBay and I bid and won. Knowing they are the same as the MX-3 save a grab handle on the frame loop and unpainted fork sliders--- I had the start of my MX-3-XC (catchy moniker, huh!). What I did not win was the 1977 swingarm, so now what? Well, everybody says the Canadian bike parts were all interchangeable from 1973 to 1982 --- only partly true as I found out. But, with that interchangeability thought in my head, I knew a friend who bought a 1975 TNT 175 enduro at the Potomac Vintage Riders Swap Meet (York, PA) several years earlier. His intentions to clean it up and race it with us never materialized so a deal was struck for my new ‘donor’ bike. True, any period Rotax motor will bolt in to any frame, even the pipe, ignition, carb and seat were a direct fit in my case. This particular donor already had a light aftermarket muffler setup so I didn’t have deal with the heavy OEM steel MAY 2019

Thoughts of a quick and easy bolt-on of the 1975 swing-arm were dashed. However, a little torch work to gain clearance for the new frame’s changed brake pedal pivot, the weldingon of a chain slider bracket and conversion to needle bearings (smooooth!) and we were good-to-go. Good-to-go except for the TNT air-box. The 1977 relocation of top shock mounts and frame rail angles required extensive use of a heat gun to modify that piece; at least until I can locate a proper ’77 part. After a failed attempt to paint an enduro gas tank black (gas-proof but chipped/flaked easily), I bit the bullet for the popular MX repro version to get the look I wanted. It was not a direct bolt on either: holes for the filter pipes need to be enlarged and sourcing a Yamaha petcock. A complete DID aluminum rear wheel from an MX-2 and a 40 hole front rim (from the York swap meet again) was laced to a TNT hub. Yes, 40 holes when the rest of the world is 36. Dare to be Different. Anyway, now we’re rolling and getting close. Next up, suspension. The 7 5/8" Betors were period modified for 8 ½" travel while Progressives with springs leftover from another project held up the rear; good enough for this Intermediate rider. Travel at the arc of the axle calculated out to be 8", less than the 9" Historic class limit but certainly in the hunt. Finishing touches include new OEM-look-a-like fenders, side plates and full graphic kit just for nice. A final raid of the used parts bin scored the bars, levers, throttle, kill button and hand guards. So, all that is left now is a ‘test and tune’ ride of my MX-3-XC and hopefully it’s off to the races. Our first two Mid-Atlantic Cross Country’s will be history by the time this appears so check the race schedule for what’s coming up, elsewhere in this issue. Ten+ years of positive growth in our region must mean we are doing something right, come check it out. AHRMA MOTOCROSS RACERS

BY RON MELTON

Where do professional motorcycle racers go when they retire? Well, if they were good, they arrive at the Pearly Gates of Motorcycle Heaven. We call that AHRMA. And yes, AHRMA is certainly the finest and most competitive amateur historic racing organization in the world. Our starting gates have been filled with some of the finest riders on the planet, world champions and many of the most iconic moto racers of our times. It really has been a great show through the years and there’s so much more to come. Here are some photos of your AHRMA family.

Marty Moates: In 1980 we all watched Marty Moates on ABC Wild World of Sports be the first American to ever beat the Europeans at the 500cc USGP taking both motos at Carslbad. Here we watched Moates at our AHRMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Sears Point win the second Moto on the Keith Lynas Ossa.

Brad Lackey: Still the only American to win the 500 GP World Championship to this day. Lackey is a regular competitor at AHRMA MX events. Lackey also won the 40+ Expert AHRMA MX title in 2000.

David Aldana: One of the fastest American Motocrossers in the first Trans Am series on a sponsered BSA, Aldana could do anything on any motorcycle so he had a lot of choices. With Bruce Brown filming on Any Sunday it was pretty smart to stay with BSA. The money was in The Grand Slam series of dirt track, roadrace, short track and TT racing. When the Brit bikes folded, Aldana went on to race for Ossa , Norton, Godon Speedway Bikes and even jump a few cars.

Marty Tripes: Busting onto the scene at 16 years old as teenage prodigy with a smooth and effortless riding style would get him hired by Bultaco, Husqvarna, Honda , Yamaha, Can Am and Harley Davidson.

Jim Pomeroy: The first American to ever win a Motocross GP, winning in Spain on a Bultaco. Jim took home a 50+ AHRMA National Motocross title, carrying the #1 plate proudly. Photo by Francene DePrez. 20

Dick Mann: With 2 AMA Grand National Championships and one of only a handful of racers capable of winning the Grand Slam. Mann was one of the few Americans to break the top ten when Motocross hit America while riding against the Europeans. Photo Nationalmcmuseum.org.

Tommy Croft: From 18 years old, Croft just went to the front of Pro Motocross, it’s so much fun riding with The Tomahawk at AHRMA. Jimmy Weinert: Three-time AMA National Motocross Champion. Now with his own motocross training facility, hosts AHRMA National events.

Donnie Canteloupi: Factory Pro Motocross racer was, and still is The Bomb, on and off the Track. Rodney Smith: One of the most versatile riders of our time winning 13 AMA National titles, and I would bet you probably couldn’t beat him in Ping Pong, even though he might not have ever played the game.

NOLA ROLA COASTA? WHEEL-TO-WHEEL IN THE BIG EASY WORDS: JOE KOURY PHOTOS: ETECHUSA.COM

After a 2-year hiatus from our last get-together in the swamp, the Luke’s Racecraft National Historic Roadrace Series returned to NOLA Motorsports Park for rounds 3 and 4. During previous gatherings here we’ve tolerated wind, storms, rain, cold and puddles encasing every apex. This go-round started with an ‘iffy’ forecast a week out, but the weather was pretty darned roadrace compatible throughout the weekend. The flat track races were canceled, but the Swap Meet and Vintage Festival proceeded as planned. With the skies cooperating, our minds were refocused on another challenge during the rider’s meeting on Friday when Luke Conner 22

announced, “It’s a little bumpy out there.” In just 2 years, the cars and the water table have taken their toll on the tarmac. Approaching corners and negotiating apexes (or apices, for the persnickety reading this) would require a little additional ‘multitasking.’ Well, it wasn’t quite as crazy as a roller coaster ride, but you add braking and leaning and dicing, and it was every bit as exciting. All NOLA competitors deserve a pat on the back for keeping the red flags out of sight for most of the weekend. There were two notable firsts that occurred on Saturday. Danny Miller has been chasing Mark Morrow for 2 seasons now in the F500 class. They had great battles throughout 2018, but Mark was always able find the finish line first. They raced as close as ever on their Yamaha

RDs Saturday and Sunday. Both battles resulted in drag races to the finish, with Danny nipping Mark at the line by .064 seconds on Saturday for his first win over Mark. Sunday’s victory margin was even tighter. Now that’s some close combat! The other first was John Scales winning the 250GP race on Saturday. This was his first win. Yours truly led for 2 laps, but John’s pass stuck and he pulled out a 2.5-second win with Kevin Burns rounding out the podium on a borrowed bike stuck in 4th gear. There was some Sidecar swappin’ as Steve Baugh piloted his Texas-based SC2 rig from the back row through traffic passing all classes until the last turn entering the front straightaway. He described it as, “…three wide trading paint before the F1 and F2 cars finally got me.” Steve

The Joyce/Collins duo grabbed the SC2 win on Sunday. Nick Hargis pulled away for a 1st place Sportsman 750 win on Saturday. Second place wasn’t decided until the final lap when Jeff Hargis caught a glance of Matt Esterline’s CB750 on his rear wheel. He picked up the pace, but Matt finished only a close .4 seconds behind him. MAY 2019

Before all the racing on Saturday, some important business was handled Friday night with the Awards Ceremony and Louisiana Cookoff between Luke Conner and Louis LeBlanc. Their cauldrons of local cuisine were hit hard before the awards were presented, and audience reaction to gauge the cookoff winner settled nothing. Congrats to all who walked away with their hard-earned class trophies and special awards. Sunday would be warmer and sunnier, and the racin’ even hotter, especially in the CB160 and 200GP Plus classes where, Jonas Stein, Joe Koury and Gregory Glevicky would swap positions and share the lead for 4 laps in tight formation. At the finish it was Glevicky (by less

than a second), Koury, Stein in both races vs. Saturday’s finishing order of Glevicky, Stein, Koury. I could never keep up with those guys and it still amazes me that they can lay down lap times in the 2:15 to 2:17 range with those minimotors and skinny tires. Some other notable close ones: Dennis Parrish riding his CB900F and CBX-mounted Will Brint had a squeaker at the finish in their Vintage Superbike Heavyweight race on Sunday with Dennis less than a second behind Will; Tom Wilbert barely held Gregory Glevicky off in the Sound of Thunder 2 finish. A mere .2 seconds separated them. And speaking of lap times, I think it’s noteworthy to recognize the fastest lap of the WWW.AHRMA.ORG

McClean Camp note: Cindy was all smiles when she proudly proclaimed her lap times had dropped 8 seconds during the weekend. Now that’s some real progress. The most populated grids both days were in the Sound of Singles 3 class with 16 competitors on Saturday and 14 on Sunday. Ralph Staropoli crossed the finish line first followed by Adrian Jasso and Edward Blount both days. There were several competitive races and close finishes. The John Snead and Stan Keyes duel must’ve been a fun one to watch on Saturday in Classic Sixties. They battled closely throughout the race with Stan just getting by John’s Manx in the last corner when John came in hot and lost the rear. (Text borrowed from Stan’s post.)

Thanks to everyone who makes it happen. Looking forward to the next events. See you in the paddock soon. AHRMA

1st Circle Bar Ranch Penton/ Preston Petty National Cross Country Series, Fluvanna, TX.

Eddie and Diedra Parks hosted this event with the help of the Permian Basin Motorcycle Association on their family ranch – the Circle Bar Ranch. Established in 1949 by Martin and Louise Parks, the family began using dirt bikes to round up cattle in the early ‘70s. The Circle Bar has been hosting enduros, trials, and off-road racing since the mid 1990s. This was our first time riding at the ranch. Caprock, canyons, mesquite, juniper, and cactus greeted us. It was so refreshing and different than our normal cross country courses. They have two basic soil types: a red clay that, when wet, builds up on the bottoms of shoes and paws, and dries like brick, and a light white colored ground called caliche. There were rocks, but not as many as I thought there would be. Saturday’s course of a little more than 4 miles was open and flowing, with a few technical spots. Sunday’s was to be a bit more technical. Saturday morning was foggy and misty. By the 1 o’clock start, the fog had lifted but temperatures were in the high 30s and it was windy. Did I mention they have a wind farm on the property? In the Vintage race, 9 riders lined up. Sheila Monk, in the PV Womens Expert class on her Suzuki, was first overall. It was really nice to see Thom Kuhns again on his Puch after a year absence. Mr. Lawrence Lucia, a Vintage 70+ Novice rider, was featured on the trophies. Unfortunately, he fell Friday while unloading at the race, and broke his hip. After surgery, he is now recovering at home. In the Post-Vintage race, it was all Trampas Parker riding a 1983 Husqvarna WR430, with 10-minute lap times, followed by Alan Drane and Greg Gordon in his first cross country ever. Albert Newmann rode an XR200 and, at the end said, “I had a blast!” Only 29 riders lined up for the Post Vintage race, which means the rest of you missed out on a really fun ride. The event flyer says, ”We race rain or shine.” Unfortunately, it did not say anything about cold and ice. Yup, Sunday morning we awoke to a nice coating of ice on everything. With the forecast calling for temperatures to drop and the wind to increase, riders voted not to ride and head for home. With 80 miles of trail available, I am looking forward to a return trip to west Texas in 2020. Our Thanks to Eddie and Diedra, PBMA, Snyder Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses, and to our AHRMA volunteers working sign-up, tech, and scoring. –Becky Hayes, Cross Country Coordinator Email: becky77m@yahoo.com Phone: 217. 553. 1849

11TH ANNUAL WHITE LIGHTNING– TOUGH, TECHNICAL, AND FUN! BY AL ROOF

11th Annual Carolinas White Lightning Cross Country Classic John Penton/Preston Petty National Cross-Country Series.Over the weekend

of March 17, nearly two-hundred AHRMA Cross Country enthusiasts, from all points east of the mighty Mississippi, gathered at seven-time National Enduro Champion Randy Hawkins’ family’s Silver Hawk Plantation, near Buffalo, SC for the 11th running of the Carolinas White Lightning Cross Country Classic. Founded by ISDT veteran Greg Holder in 2009, the White Lightning makes up the second and third rounds of the Preston Petty/John Penton AHRMA National Cross Country Series. This winter’s record rainfall forced the relocation of the staging area, start, and entire race course to the west side of the property, on high ground above the overflowing Fair Forest River, just two weeks before the event. All of this came AFTER the previous course had been improved and arrowed. Holder and property manger Todd MacDonald worked frantically and tirelessly to create what many considered an epic course in record time, with Bobby Richardson and me aiding in clearing, pre-riding and arrowing. Dedicated to delivering an excellent course, yours truly risked life and limb to remove any and all wait-a-minute vines. While pre-riding new trail, I snagged a vine with my brake pedal, ripping it out of the ground, but not before a spectacular MAY 2019

crash ensued. Imagine, if you will, an aircraft carrier landing gone bad; with the pedal as the tail hook and the vine as the snag arresting wire. I just knew I’d trashed my knee, but Divine intervention led to a speedy recovery, allowing me to complete my duties for the race weekend. Despite our best efforts, and a lot of prayers, an errant two-hour thunderstorm on Friday afternoon led to extremely slippery trail conditions for the Saturday morning Vintage/Novice race. Regardless, only one rider found need for first aid, not from crashing, but from an errant Sawbriar vine. Blasted vines! Saturday afternoon’s race left some very deep root-filled ruts and wallowed out muddy spots. Going beyond the call of duty, Holder and MacDonald called for a ninety-minute delay Sunday morning, enlisted the services of Course Marshalls Billy Chapman, Ray Lewis, Mark Price, Jon Prytherch, and Mark Tart, and rerouted around four problematic areas. The result was an epic and enjoyable race course. Steve Bowman, who made the trek down from Annville, Pennsylvania, writes “It was well worth the ten-hour drive. I would recommend this event to all of my vintage friends and would definitely come back again.” Steve continued, “As a longtime event coordinator of a modern bike hare scramble in central Pennsylvania, I know it’s always nice when someone commends you for your hard work. You

guys did a fantastic job with the course. I haven’t stopped thinking about or talking about the weekend since I got home Monday afternoon. The course was excellent! A very good mix of everything you could think of, from fast flowing 2-track trails, to twisty tight single track, to a little bit of mud, ruts and roots. The inclusion of an awesome grass track and very vintage-bike friendly motocross track was a treat. The layout was creative, from woods to the open stuff and back in the woods and back out again. Fast, then slow, then fast and slow really mixed it up nicely. A few up hills long enough to blow the carbon out after the tight woods and some gradual switchbacks working your way back down again. Saturday was a little slimy at first from Friday’s rain, but it tacked up nicely ‘till the end of the afternoon race. Sunday offered absolutely perfect conditions.” Another recounting his experience was Blue Ridge Yamaha/Polaris owner Paul Thistle. Apparently fully recovered from last year’s triple bypass surgery, Paul rode with renewed vigor and had a great time. Thistle writes, “I rode 50+ Expert on Saturday and got the holeshot on the front row. Led for a couple of miles. It was muddy, but not terrible, blew a turn, despite double arrows, track tape, and all. Two got by me. They were pulling me a little, I saw no reason to take a mud bath when I wasn’t even sure they were in my class. The start WWW.AHRMA.ORG

The Carolinas White Lightning Cross Country Classic is fast becoming one of the most anticipated events on the CC calendar.

If the challenging course and spectacular scenery weren't enough, event organizer Al Roof hands out some really “cool” awards to a couple of worthy riders. Each year Al hands out a White Lightning “moonshine” jug to the “coolest” Vintage and Post-Vintage bikes at the race. Well, a couple of boys from St. Augustine, FL, who travelled together to this event, took home the jugs. Scott Thompson, and his “sort of” 1955 Matchless G80CS earned the Cool Vintage award for the 3rd time. “It's a bit of a mongrel pieced together from a big, giant pile of Matchless and AJS parts I've acquired over the years. I really like the AJS and Matchless bikes.” said. Thompson. It should be noted that Scott also brought a '74 AJS Stormer to the party, as well. Scott, who admits to being a “shambling wreck” is one of a cornucopia of characters to be found at White Lightning. They just seem come out of the wood work! George Dencer, also from St Augustine, and one of Scott's travel companions, was awarded the Post Vintage Cool Bike Award for his '79 SWM Italian two-stroke. “I gotta acknowledge Johnny Freidli,” he said. “He put the bike together from some solid sources and it shows. The thing is far better than I am. lol I was pretty stoked to get the PV award this year. Especially so because my buddy Scott “Chubbsworth” Thompson took home the Vintage award. Cool to have them both go home to St Augustine, Fl.”

of the second lap saw the tight pines section turn to ice! Holy cow it was slick! Right before opening into a field, Mark Zachary’s bike was upside down in the trail, I stopped and lent him a hand getting back going. He said he wanted to finish the lap. Two more went by, I caught back up to them. The mx360 was back and forth then pulled away. I think the other was a Penton. He was faster when it opened up, I was a little faster in the tight stuff. We were close the whole last lap. When we went into the woods after the MX track, I thought I’d press him a little. I watched his front end tuck a couple of times (as did mine) and thought we’d both be better off if we didn’t test our abilities any further so I backed off a little. That was great fun!” Vintage Women’s Intermediate class winner Jenn Smith had a good time too, writing “I had dual laps both days, finished first in my class. I have a ‘72 Kawasaki F7 175. Sweet track on Day 2. Day 1 was tough for two laps! Loved it!” One of the neatest developments of the weekend was somewhat of a family feud. The spry Fred Veator (77) and young Bob Williams (70) battled it out in the Post Vintage +70 Expert class, while their sons, Tommy Veator (Post Vintage 200 Expert) and Tim Williams (Post Vintage Open Expert), battled for the Post-Vintage overall win. In close racing Bob bested Fred each day. Tommy took the Post-Vintage overall win each day, with Tim finishing third overall on Saturday, and second overall on Sunday. It was extremely gratifying to have so many families and younger riders among the ranks at the White Lightning. Billy and Chasity Chapman’s sons Brandon (21) and Hunter (17) launched MAY 2019

their post vintage racing efforts here. Brandon, on a 1983 Yamaha TT600, finished second Post Vintage Open Expert each day, and Hunter, on a 1987 Honda Reflex, finished ninth Saturday and sixth Sunday in the Post Vintage 200 Intermediate class. The Fire Brigade, as I like to call them, was out in force, with Ken Cichy (Sportsman 200 Intermediate), Marcus Huffman (Sportsman 200 Expert), Dave Liebgold (Sportsman Open Novice), and Pam Liebgold (Vintage Women’s Intermediate) competing, and their large fan club/pit crew in full force. Among other young riders were Amber AuBain, Sam Burroughs, and Jacob Flowers. These folks will be the ones to carry on our legacies. We need to attract even more and encourage them as much as possible. A casual camp-style Saturday evening barbecue dinner was catered by local Midway BBQ, which is among Southern Living Magazine’s “The South’s Legendary Barbecue Joints,” and for good reason, everything was delicious! After dinner the 2018 National Cross-Country Series awards were presented by AHRMA National Cross Country Coordinator Becky Hayes and North Atlantic Cross Country Coordinator Dave Kutskel. New Castle, Pennsylvania’s Joe Cole received the Tommy McDermott Trophy. This perpetual trophy is awarded for outstanding performance in cross country. Ashtabula, Ohio’s Dennis Brown was presented with the Sportsman of the Year Award. This is AHRMA’s highest award, presented to a member for outstanding contributions to the vintage movement. There were so many cool bikes at this year’s event I could not help but award some very deserving Honorable Mentions, to include: Steve Fowler’s Harley-Davidson 250 Sprint (a former jug winner); Dwight Gill’s 1974 Rokon RT340; Sam Huggins’ 1983 Can-Am ASE 250; Dwight Rudder’s 1973 Ossa Six Day Replica; and Anthony Yannitelli’s 1981 Maico 490 GS. Greg Holder works long and hard laying out, clearing and marking the course, twice this year. Todd MacDonald and Bobby Richardson too. And I put in a lot of hours on promotion, P.R., and logistics, but we could never pull off an event of this caliber without the help of a small army of volunteers, nineteen in all, from AHRMA and a group of very good friends. To them we are very grateful. Complete weekend results can be found at: http://www.moto-tally.com/ahrma AHRMA –Contact: Al.Roof.3224@gmail.com and/or https://www.facebook.com/al.roof.1

BURROWS RANCH HIGH AND MOSTLY DRY BY DEBBIE POOLE PHOTO BY SHARON COAD

Dire weather predictions threatened this event for over a week before the race weekend arrived, but as often happens it rained, blew and flooded in the valley to the east but left the ranch alone. We didn't see much sun, but the trials, cross country and Vintage motocross all went off well. Fifty-one trials riders found riding to the sections much muddier and wetter than the sections themselves, which generally had good traction and green grass. AHRMA's new Executive Director, Curt Comer was on the job in more ways than one. He swept all three loops of the Premier Heavyweight Expert class riding Matt Hilgenberg's Ariel.; three zero point loops is hard to beat, second place Rob Poole lost 25. Charlie Higdon beat out Sean Fromhold for first in the intermediate class, and Mike Miller was the novice champ. MAY 2019

Ralph Foster continues his unbeatable domination in the Modern Classic Master class with only 5 points on the most difficult line in AHRMA trials, followed by much younger Wes Poole with 39. Modern Classic expert had five competitors who ran very close; winner Tanner Kane lost 25 points, second place Morgan Proffitt had 26 as did Gary Gronow, who had fewer cleans resulting in 3rd. A large field of Modern Classic intermediates saw Grant Menghini, who just moved up to intermediate in 2019, take the win with only 6 points. Joe Bill and Grant's brother Craig, also a brand new intermediate, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with 16 and 17 points. Stuart Proffitt made an excellent showing in Modern Classic novice, with a 6 point day for the win, followed by local Clay Dawley (12 points) and Marcus Harner (13). Joe Klokkevold and Rick Wolff fought it out in Classic expert, with Joe taking the win.

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Saturday afternoon over 40 cross country riders lined up for the Northwest regional cross country. A lot of the approximately 8 mile course was laid out in the meadow below the hills in anticipation of rain, which makes the hills impossible to negotiate. At the last minute part of it was re-routed into the hills when it became clear the weather was going to cooperate. Still, months of previous rain made for a lot of standing water and mud in places, but the riders made the most of it and enjoyed the new course which was laid out by Jeff Burrows, assisted by Jeff Bushey and Wayne Hawes. Sunday morning was again overcast and a very pleasant temperature. The 13 races went off like clockwork under the supervision of a well-oiled start/finish crew of Walt Foster, Bill Quaccia and Nicky Trevino, with Sam McMurray handling the finish line. The track could not have offered better conditions, with

Photos by Kelly Shane. only one rather tricky muddy turn, and no hint of dust, no injuries, and smiles all around. One of the best races of the day was in Sportsman 500 expert between pro flat-track ace from Illinois Jeff Carver, and Wes Poole. Jeff was sponsored by Zane Amaro on a lightningfast Maico, and seemed to take to vintage MX racing quite naturally, going 1-1. Amaro got a first-hand view from a distance as he followed Carver and Poole for third. Premier 500 expert was won by the young and fast Will Hilgenberg, with our new ED MAY 2019

taking part in even more weekend fun on Matt Hilgenberg's Dick Mann-built Monarch, placing second. Bob Bellicitti took charge of the 60+ experts with a 1-1, followed by Brad Berquist and Steve Gard. For intermediate action, John Stein won both motos, pursued by local Willows rider Allen Neihues, and third place Rowland Coad. Sportsman 250 was one of the larger races of the day, and Clay Mauer was the expert champ, followed by Terry Bentley and Tanner Kane. Intermediates were led by Rick Ziemer Jr.; Charles Haines and Morgan Proffitt finished 2nd and 3rd. It should be noted that Haines is a "mature" rider, and was surrounded by a pack of young twenty-to-early 30 year old riders- so great to see young guys enjoying our sport, but kudos to the older riders who can hold their own with them.

The Iron Butt completion held at three events this season is definitely growing. Any rider who participates in all three disciplines in an Iron Butt Weekend - trials, cross country and motocross - gets a special medal, and becomes eligible for a year-end Iron Butt Cup. Burrows Ranch is the first Iron Butt weekend of 2019, and qualifying riders were: Kelly Shane, Peter Jorgenson, Emmy Poole, Clay Mauer, Chet Mauer, Wes Poole, Sean Fromhold, Russ Pfirrman, Gary Gronow, Jeff Bushey, Mike Nadeker, Luke Sayer, and Cy Yee. Let's see how many will ride the next two Iron Butt weekends, held at the Bodnar NW regional and Bushey Ranch national weekend, and receive a welldeserved and beautiful Iron Butt Cup. Very nice barn find motorcycle that sports an earlier repaint on the tank and fenders. This old girl is how you like to find them with all of the dust and grime that one would expect from an original old rider. After sitting for many years, the engine and transmission have been serviced and all fluids have been changed out. The 61ci EL Panhead engine sounds good and starts easy but obviously has had some time on it before being set aside for its long sleep. Don’t miss out!! THE LAST PAGE WITH GUEST EDITOR MERCEDES GONZALES

I am a lucky soul. How many women MX Racers get the opportunity to be invited by AHRMA SW Regional Coordinator, Tami (Rice) Greenhill to participate in a special race, “The Pioneers of Women’s Motocross,” during the AHRMA Riverport National event held at Don Diamond’s Ranch in Jefferson, Texas? Not many, only 9 to be exact. The trip to Texas was epic right from the get-go starting with a threehour drive from Dallas to Jefferson with my all-time idol and good friend Sue Fish. Sue was the first woman motocross rider that inspired me. Her riding skills made me strive to be like her in every way. She had the respect of all the girls and the men she raced against. Wow. After getting about 2 hours of sleep we were back at the track at 5:00 am to do a live local TV show. As we were getting ready to go, Sue walks outside and says, “Hey, it’s not too cold, we don’t need jackets.” I opened the door and saw SHEETS of rain coming down so hard it reminded me of those tropical Loretta 46

Lynn’s rainstorms. I just had to look at Sue like she was crazy. The TV interview went well and Brad Lackey, also being interviewed, was very energetic and entertaining, especially for 5 o’clock in the morning! Some of the best parts of the weekend were just hanging out with Brad Lackey, Chuck Sun, & Marty Tripes. The track was epic as well. Nestled in a beautiful wooded area, a rolling green grass track was marked out. Heaven! We didn’t race until Sunday, which was awesome because by that time the track had dried out, maybe a little too much. Perfect traction though! I was lucky enough to ride a pristine 1982 Honda CR 250cc owned by a super guy, Bobby McClelland owner Kissimmee Motorsports, in FL. The bike was great, well except for the fact that drum brakes don’t stop too quickly. After I pulled the “hole shot” in the first moto, I realized that the first turn came up way to quickly for me to stop in time. Sue Fish and Dee Woods took advantage of my mistake and went right by me. But three turns later I think Sue experienced the same thing, as I saw her almost kiss her front number plate going into a rutted corner. I got by her and was all over Dee trying to figure out how I was going to pass her. She was hauling ass and basically flat tracking all the turns from outside line to inside line….damn! When she slightly over-shot a corner, I got way too anxious to pass and stalled out trying to make the inside drive. Well, I knew I couldn’t start the bike, because the kick starter was on the left side, and I broke my left leg a couple of years ago and don’t have enough range of motion to bend it enough to kick start a bike. So, there I was begging anyone to come over

and start it for me. They did, and I ended up passing back up to second. What a blast! Anyway, Dee was going way faster than I wanted to go!! Oh, and Sue got stuck in a rutted corner on the second lap and that’s where she stayed the whole moto. What a bummer! I yelled at her every lap when I came by while Tami (Rice/Greenfield) and Bonnie (Warch) were battling hard for 3rd and 4th. For the second moto we thought it would be a good ideal to have some sag in the backend of my bike. This way it would look like I was riding a motorcycle instead of a rodeo horse! As I’m getting ready for the rubber band start, Dee Woods suddenly blew through the rubber band and it slapped me on the arm causing me to react and almost loop it out. So, I thought, “That stinks Dee cheated!” But really, I found out after the race that her clutch blew and when she put it into gear, the bike just took off. Without a clutch she slid out in the backside of the track going into a corner. After that, I went around her and led pretty much the rest of the race. I was having such fun on this awesome vintage track— no big jumps, just off-camber turns, long straights, and great traction in the outside grassy edges of the track. Then, right before I got the white flag, my bike started crapping out. It was sputtering so bad that I really didn’t think it would make the final lap. I just kept saying “please” and looking back for Dee. Somehow, I made it to the finish and ended up winning. It was such a blast!!! Just bench racing after the race and seeing everyone smiling ear to ear made it a great day. –Mercedes Gonzales Editor's Note: This article first appeared in the May 2008 issue of Vintage Views. Tami (Rice) Greenhill organized this awesome event. Hey GURL– it would be great to see a repeat. Thank you Tami , and all of the women of AHRMA for everything you do. –Alice
