It’s amazing how much an organization can come together. From a magazine perspective, if you look at the big publications - Cycle News, Racer X, you name it - look at the credits. There are tons of people on the staff, as well as tons of contributors working to make the magazine a reality. When you look at AHRMA, you’ll notice the number of credits is a bit smaller, but the output of content is amazing. Yes, this issue may be a bit smaller than a few of the previous months. But for a team of folks to not only work at hosting events, and make sure all our riders have a wonderful experience, to changing venues, and making rules changes, and promoting the organization on social media, to also help put stories and race recaps together for our membership is incredibly impressive.

PHONE 888-41AHRMA (888) 412-4762

I also want to thank all our contributors who go out of their way to get us the best content possible - the photographers and members who put words to paper for those of us who can’t attend the event itself. You guys are an invaluable part of this publication.

here are things in life that provide challenges; we’ve all been there… The racing lifestyle presents some challenges too. Of all the “fixes” motorcyclists create, the really handy folks could probably start a small business. Some do, and I’m grateful. Recently, I purchased a new trailer and was outfitting it. All the usual things to be done…paint the walls, find a suitable floor treatment, install restraints to transport bikes, install fittings on all the floors and walls to create a schematic that will be functional and easy to use for the long term. Many of you have probably done this over the years,

and you know exactly the project I’m talking about. As I started into it I was thinking about the time, efforts, and cost to complete the job. Put 3 coats of paint on the walls, 3 coats of truck bed liner on the floor, e-track throughout the trailer to have fastening points where and when needed. Hardware fixtures on the walls for security and mounting. And transport restraints, the most critical part… You may have a friend who experienced – or experienced yourself – the heart sinking feeling of opening your trailer door and seeing a motorcycle on it’s side. At that moment most people would probably pay 3 times the price of a good restraint to have kept it from happening.

motorcycles, having solutions that provide peace of mind is important. I know many of you travel long distances to race events – both Off Road and Road Racing. If you are looking for a quality front wheel chock that can easily be mounted and removed, and used at home, in trailers, and onsite at events, the Baxley Chock is a winner. There are other great solutions that I’ll likely touch on in the future, and I hope you’ll share yours with me at our next event.

I was very lucky many years ago to have discovered a single invention that made my motorcycle transport life much better and safer. Two words…Baxley Chocks. These ingenious chocks have become a staple in many garages, trailers, and for ease of management in the pits at both Off Road and Road Race weekends, or even track days. The security and peace of mind that comes from this simple design is one of the best options for front wheel chocks available. I know many of you are likely familiar with this product as they have become a staple in many paddocks and race organizations. And with good reason. The patented way the chock grips the wheel is one of the best designs available.

Now, let’s race!

What’s also notable is the way they treat their customers. During my recent trailer set up I had questions and special parts requests that require additional communication. I was installing several mounting kits in my trailer and wanted them to be easily removeable for quick / simple in-line loading and unload. The folks at “BaxleybyProvidence” were exceptional. Whether it was the front line team that takes your call, or the technical team that responds with immediate and knowledgeable advice, this operation is a valuable entity in our industry. I am thankful to have resources like this that make the sport of motorcycling better, easier, and safer. I’m also thankful I discovered them nearly 20 years ago, and that I’ve never had an issue with a motorcycle when in a Baxley Chock. With all the challenges in racing APRIL 2022

We left home on Tuesday, February 15th with both dogs, Curt’s motorcycles and a trailer full of AHRMA equipment. While I was excited to be heading out for my first race serving as AHRMA’s Road Race Director, I was feeling unusually tired and with Curt at the wheel, I decided a nap was in order. When I awoke, my temperature was elevated and by the next morning I had to acknowledge that I was sick. I won’t bore you all with the details, but suffice it to say, I had to quarantine.

The championship points are close with new comers like Shane Scott and young guns like Wyatt Campbell putting pressure on defending champions Charlie Williams, David Aldana, and Richard Brodock. But there is plenty of season to go and with 26 rounds, best of 14 towards the championship, its gonna come down to strategy, skill, and a little bit of luck. APRIL 2022

HOW POPULAR ARE CLASSIC BIKE RACES IN AUSTRIA? Classic bikes are gaining in popularity. In the beginning the participants were former dirt bike racers getting their older bikes out. They started to put racing series together. Nowadays there is an increase of interest from younger riders. They do not necessarily have a typical racing background. HOW MANY CLASSES CAN YOU CHOOSE FROM? There are seven classic classes to choose from, mainly based on the age of the bike. All classes require drum brakes, air cooling and twin shocks. There are three Youngtimer classes, with bikes built between 1983-1993, and they are divided into two- and four stroke.

HOW STRICT ARE THE RULES – IS IT POSSIBLE TO RACE SEVERAL CLASSES? The rules are to be followed but not always totally strict. It is not possible to race multiple classes on one day since the races for each class are spread out over an entire day. WHICH TRACKS/ COURSES DO YOU RACE ON? Most race series in Austria are based on the traditional Enduro format – there is a main course including special tests. Some use a hare scramble race style. The courses are on fields and in the woods, sometimes they also include MX tracks. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR CLASS IN AUSTRIA? Youngtimer class up to 1993.

14

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

WHICH ONE IS THE MOST POPULAR RACE IN AUSTRIA? The Classic Enduro in Mühlen. The race was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, but is back on the calendar, scheduled for September 2021. The race is limited to 250 participants, but it is very hard to even get a start slot. This is a location with a lot of tradition. They used to have the ISDE Six Days Enduro in the 1950s. ARE THE RACES SPECTATOR FRIENDLY? Yes, absolutely. Each rider is presented during the race, and most races have easily accessible sections to watch and cheer. Vendors show up and offer food and drinks for the spectators. These types of events are very family friendly – most racers are accompanied by their families and they turn it into a family trip.

APRIL 2022

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BIKE - SUZUKI 350 DR. WHAT YEAR IS IT? ARE THERE ANY MODIFICATIONS? My Suzuki was built in 1993, which is the last possible year to take part in the Youngtimer class. I took out a stronger fork from a Suzuki RM 125, which works fairly well. As a shock I use one from Wilbers (German), which makes the suspension set-up well adjusted. I also replaced the foot pegs, the exhaust, and the carburetor. Other parts I took off, like the odometer and the battery, to reduce the overall weight. The bike’s weight is 116 kg (256 lbs), ready to race! This year I purchased a larger gas tank, since I want to participant in a Youngtimer rallye. HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE DOES IT NEED? WHICH PARTS BREAK THE MOST? Not much, most important are oil changes and keeping the air filer clean. I never have any part which breaks, the bike is good old japanese quality :-)

APRIL 2022

WHEN DID YOU START RACING CLASSIC BIKES? HOW MANY CLASSIC RACES HAVE YOU DONE (ESTIMATE) SO FAR? I was about 40 when I started to look into vintage racing. In the meantime I have done about ten classic races, since I still race regular enduro races. WHAT IS YOUR OWN RACING/ RIDING BACKGROUND? 25 years of offroad racing including Austrian and European Enduro Championship racing, hard enduro racing like RedBull Romaniacs in the Pro Class, RedBull Erzberg, and Podiums on European Rallyes.

WOULD YOU SAY THIS IS A SPORT FOR PEOPLE NEW TO DIRT BIKES? Classic bike racing offers a great opportunity to get into motorcycle racing. Some of the bikes are pretty simple and low maintenance. The races are not too demanding and the vintage racing family is very open for new-comers and offers help whenever needed. WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION – IS IT MORE LAIDBACK OR HIGHLY COMPETITIVE? Overall, most participants come to have fun. Even riders with a competitive background don’t take it as serious as they did back in the day.

DID MOST RACERS START ON REGULAR BIKES AND SWITCHED TO CLASSICS? DO YOU MEET THE SAME RACERS YOU KNOW FROM REGULAR COMPETITIONS? WHAT PERCENTAGE DOES NOT HAVE A REGULAR RACING BACKGROUND AND SIMPLY LIKES CLASSIC BIKES? Only 25% do not have a racing background. Many racers I know from regular offroad events.

BLOOMINGDALE, GA February 17-20, 2022

WORDS: KEVIN BURNS PHOTOS: ETECHPHOTO.COM

Ah, the race season, and it will be a good one, but right now I’m recalling the “good old days” when we left Barber and spent several weeks of our winter break reminiscing past glories and planning strategic moves to upgrade our machines. The first thig some of us did—me—was mark out the schedule to be certain we had enough time before that third week in February. Wait. What? Stop. What? January? I haven’t even taken down the decorations yet. Well, 2022 started a bit early for some of us. I

heard the activities surrounding the mighty Daytona were spectacular. But that’s another story. Our story begins at the traditional start of the season. Oh, stop your whining, and gather around for the real start of the AHRMA Road Race Season, the very fast Roebling Road Raceway. Two miles of pretty good asphalt, six nearly perfect arcs, and a killer straight.

Before we start the recap, though, I would be remiss in not mentioning some significant firsts to start us up.

First, we got ourselves a race director, and I don’t know anyone who is not just tickled over the announcement of Dewanna Comer. Dewanna worked as RRD (Do I have to spell it out?) for a good part of last year. I know there were a bunch of us rooting for her to “go pro” and we’re glad she did. So, welcome Dewanna.

Also, few firsts for us on the racetrack. Thursday track activity: a little bit of AHRMA, a little bit of street, and a little bit of Ed Bargy. There has been discussions on opening

RR Thursday for practice to scatter the winter cobwebs, and number of you took advantage of the opportunity. It was also the inaugural AHRMA Track Day, giving street riders a little taste of the sport we love. And Ed Bargy conducted his excellent Advanced Skills rider course.

We’re throwing in a change in format this year mostly because this reporter had a difficult time keeping up with all the action. 26 races over the weekend was almost too much of a challenge for a guy coming back after two years on the bench. We have some great shots from etechphoto. com, interviews with Dave Roper and Michelle Fisher, some insight from Chloe Peterson, and an update on the Vintage Cup.

Finally, Roebling hosted the return to competition two of AHRMA’s favorite sons after a couple years of physical rehab, Randy Hoffman and Kevin Burns. It was not an easy road, but they’re back, and a lot more people know the determination we both carried through that time. Thank you all for your well wishes and support.

Now, let’s go racing.

AHRMA National Historic Cup Superbike Roadracing Series Vintage Heavyweight Roebling Road Race Recap WORDS: AHRMA STAFF PHOTOS: ETECHPHOTO.COM

MotoFest™ Swap Meet after blowing his original engine racing in Daytona.

Motorcycles that are mostly hiding away in personal collections showed they can still deliver on the racetrack during the second race weekend of the 2022 Bridgestone Tires American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) National Historic Cup Roadracing Series at Roebling Road Raceway near Savanah, Georgia on February 19 and 20.

There were 6 bikes on the grid in Vintage Superbike Heavyweight, each day of the event with some racers crossing the country to compete.

“It looks like this is going to be an exciting group, there are a lot of bikes being built right now that will be coming out for future races this year, and we are building steam.” said Brian Larrabure, 2022 Chair of the AHRMA Board of Trustees.

Saturday’s race had the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class gridded behind Sound of Thunder 3. Maddrill’s strategy was to use the SOT3 traffic going into turn one to his advantage to gap the rest of the field, which he did, taking the lead. He was able to keep it throughout the race taking the checkered flag. Kevin Rammer from Newnan, Georgia, on a 1982 Honda CB650SC, and Robert Ringnalda, from Columbus, Ohio aboard a 1979 Honda CBX1000 were in a heated battle with Rammer going

The 2022 Vintage Cup class sponsored by RoadracingWorld.com, Vintage Superbike Heavyweight, was featured on both days of the Roebling Road event. Jeremy Maddrill, from Stiger, Illinois, won both races on a 1979 Kawasaki KZ 650. Maddrill custom built his bike between the season opener at Daytona and Roebling Road using a motor purchased at the AHRMA Classic

offroad at one point. Rammer was able to come back, passing Ringnalda in hot pursuit of Maddrill, reeling him in each lap, but finished a bike length behind for second place and Ringnalda in third. Rounding out the results, William Brint from Mount Airy, Georgia riding a 1979 Honda CBX finished fourth, Rian Mondriaan from Bradenton, Florida on a 1982 Honda CB900F in fifth, and Warren Wilson, from Indianapolis, Indiana on a 1982 Kawasaki GPZ 750 finishing in sixth position. On Sunday, the race grids were modified so that Vintage Superbike Heavyweight was in front of SOT3, putting Maddrill on pole, eliminating using Saturday’s strategy to his advantage. Brint was the first racer through turn 1 with Maddrill clearing it in second position, followed by Ringnalda. Lap 1 was red-flagged, and the race was restarted and shortened from 8 to 6 laps. At the restart, again, Brint was first to clear turn 1, then Ringnalda followed by Maddrill. Ringnalda took and held the lead until his bike experienced mechanical issues and he was forced to retire, leaving Brint and Maddrill to battle for first. Maddrill finally squeezed past Brint in turn 5 and held the lead for the checkered flag. Brint had to work for second place when Rammer passed him

coming out of turn 6 but was able to out motor him 300 feet from start/ finish to take second, Rammer taking third, Mondriaan fourth, Wilson in fifth, and Ringnalda sixth. Dave Roper Awarded Paco Bultó Trophy

INTRO: KEVIN BURNS INTERVIEW: DEWANNA COMER & DAVE ROPER PHOTOS: KEVIN BURNS

Dave Roper, THE Motorcycle Man, was honored with the Paco Bulto Trophy for his championship win in 250GP. This was Dave’s second year as National Champion in the class. Often a man of few words, Dave was unaware of the class trophy. As the first recipient of the award in 2018, it was my pleasure to break the news to Dave. He stopped work on his bike for a moment to let the news sink in. DAVE: “I was awarded the 250GP class championship perpetual trophy that was donated by Juan Bultó, the son of the founder of Bultaco motorcycles. Juan raced in AHRMA in 2017, I believe, and totally added class to the program; he was a superb rider and a really friendly guy. He came with the Romero brothers who were backup; they didn’t speak any English. Juan spoke good English, and he would translate for them. They were a wonderful crew. Juan and I had a couple of good dustups. He donated a cutaway Bultaco motor, an absolutely fabulous APRIL 2022

piece of mechanical art. It’s totally complete: you turn the crankshaft and you can watch the piston go up and down in the cutaway cylinder. I emailed Juan thanking him for the trophy and reminiscing about our good times together. He said he’d love to come back and do some more AHRMA racing, but he doesn’t have the time now because he’s managing a Moto2 team in the European championship. It’s special to be chosen for this award because it was absolutely a magnificent work of art but also, to have that connection with Juan Bultó meant a lot.” AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

From Volunteering to Racing INTERVIEW: DEWANNA COMER & MICHELLE FISHER PHOTOS: KEVIN BURNS & DEWANNA COMER

Michelle, a retired truck driver, began volunteering with AHRMA six years ago. Like many others, it was the invite of an AHRMA member who was a personal friend, in this case Jeff Hargis, that got her hooked and now all of AHRMA Road Racing gets to experience her award-winning smile as they come off the track. The Mike Smith Trophy was to be presented at the year-end banquet in Daytona, but as usual Michelle was taking care of racers and was unable to attend. could have those time slots. Once I retired, I started coming to watch him. There’s a lot of down time if you’re just spectating and I don’t do down time very well [laughs]. Of course, you quickly make friends around here; everybody’s so kind and welcoming. We quickly made friends and would help wrench in the pits, clean visors, hold stands, whatever we could do to help.

DEWANNA: What did you think when you heard your name was called for winning the award? MICHELLE: I received a message later informing me that I had won and I must admit, I didn’t even know there was such an award. I was very honored to have been selected to receive it. DEWANNA: How did you get involved with volunteering, and what can others do to get involved? MICHELLE: I think just talk to your family and friends. Kirk and I started coming because Jeff Hargis is a good friend of ours; Jeff and I worked together for over 20 years. I wanted to come and watch him, but the way our jobs worked you could only allow so many people to be on vacation at one time; he was using his vacation time to race, so I would schedule my vacation at other times so he 22

That location is a busy place for the crash truck, and he was getting pretty frustrated, and I said “Well, what can we do to help?” He said, “Well, you could run the crash truck.” I was horrible at it [laughs] just because I didn’t know how it worked; I was at the wrong place at the wrong time trying to go in the wrong direction. I was talking to Dutch Stivason and said “I would like to have a lap on a side car just so I can experience it once.” He asked if I was going to be at Gingerman, and said “You’ll get a ride there.” I thought wonderful, and borrowed some leathers from Jeff because I had no gear. Well, it looked like I was in 300 pounds of football gear [laughs]; Jeff’s not a big guy but we’re just different body types and every time I would duck down, my head would disappear in the neck hole. It was abysmal; I did horribly at it. I said “Well, this isn’t for me but it’s been fun.” I just wanted a few laps, but Dutch said “Oh no, you’re mine for the weekend; I didn’t get anybody else. You’re going to really experience it; you can’t tell anything from a few laps.” When we finished that Sunday, he said “Okay, now next year…” and I went “Oh no, that’s it!

That was horrible! You’ve been very kind and very patient and haven’t told me I’m horrible, but I know I was, and this probably isn’t for me.” The long winter set in and I thought perhaps if I had my own gear, this would have been a different story; the gear was a big impediment, and with the side cars being new, I didn’t know where to move or how to get there. I bought some gear over the winter that fit and by then Dutch had consigned Jerry to ride with him. That was ok, I figured I would be available if somebody needed someone and as it turns out I got hooked up with another driver and have filled in as needed since that time. DEWANNA: It certainly looks like a lot of fun, and I know that it’s a fan favorite. Racing in a predominately male sport can have its disadvantages. What’s your thoughts on inviting other females to race AHRMA? MICHELLE: AHRMA is very welcoming; we’ve got a lot of women on two wheels, and as soon as I started making these races regularly a lot of guys have been trying to get me out there on two wheels. I teach beginner riders for Harley-Davidson. I’m not competitive; I’m a cruise rider, I’m a scenery watcher, so that’s really never appealed to me. I must admit, there’s always that little fear that I’m going to get out there and really like it, and then that’s going to be all-consuming. Right now, I’m very happy volunteering; I want to stay in that niche. I can do the sidecar racing easily, whereas if I start with the two wheels, it gets to be a lot more complicated and difficult. DEWANNA: Is there anything else as far as a message that you want to send out? MICHELLE: I think there may be some people out there that would like to try one thing or another, be it volunteering, racing side cars, and are silent about it. Talk to the racers, talk to the staff, and let them know of your interests and we’ll put you out there and we’ll put you to work.

A Slight Change of Plan...

WORDS: CHLOE PETERSON PHOTOS: ETECHPHOTO.COM

I originally set out for the Roebling race weekend to be a relaxing, nonrace weekend where I would help my Fiancé, Jeremy Maddrill, in the pits and be the supportive, trophy wife in training (ha!). Deep down, I knew I should pack my suit and gear “just in case.” I had many “terrible” excuses why I couldn’t bring my RC390 to race: last minute deciding to tag along, busy with the Royal Enfield Build.Train.Race. MotoAmerica prep, saving vacation days by working remotely hence not being available to practice Friday. Many people including Race School Headmaster, Mark Morrow, wouldn’t take my excuses and were encouraging me to race no matter what. Mark said the seat time of having limited time to practice

before racing on tracks you have never been before will be similar to what I would be experiencing this summer with MotoAmerica. Yeah, he’s right, ugh.

Fast forward to a couple days before the weekend, Dutch Stivason asked me to fill in as a sidecar copilot on his 1975 Harley Davidson XLH Ironhead 1000 since Jerry Hoag was sick. Hell yeah! Of course, I wouldn’t pass that opportunity to help. The Ironhead was the same rig that I learned to copilot on in 2020 with Dutch. We got first place in both of our races in the Classic Big Wheel class! In one of the races, we saw one of the sidecars flip in turn 6. Whenever you see that happen, it definitely is a reminder that sidecars can be dangerous and it requires precise coordination between the driver and copilot. Three wheels must be respected. For me, however, the fun still far outweighs the risk.

On Saturday afternoon of that weekend, Clint Austin (of NOLA Riding Academy) became the second AHRMA member to be one of my sponsors for my BTR adventures this year. When he found out I wasn’t racing my own bike, he urged me to go out and race his Yamaha R3 in Colleen Urmson Watts (#923) SOT4. New track 24

and new bike was kind of a scary thought but I decided I should just try it! It was fun to coordinate logistics of racing the same bike with Mark Smithard (G66) because he was also borrowing the R3 to race on Sunday in SOT3 since his CB was on the fritz. When it came to race time, I was over-thinking the start and what I should be revving to before the green flag. With two race starts because of a red flag, I definitely had it down the second time. No big deal. It was awesome to see Colleen Urmson Watts bring her “A” game from the start and shine in this race. My favorite part of the race was coming out of the last turn of the last lap and being passed by Jean-Marc David and Adam Seibert. “Time to do some last-minute work!” The drafting skills I learned at Daytona helped me snag 9th place back from Adam Seibert right at the finish line. Man, talk about satisfying, Score! Since the stock R3 was underpowered compared to the dominate RC390s, I achieved my main goal of making sure I didn’t come in last, phew! My AHRMA family really made my weekend great by getting me out on the track. So many great people in my corner supporting and believing in me. Also, shout out to another AHRMA road racer Frank Cotton (of Madison Band supply) who became my first sponsor for the MotoAmerica season. Thank you! APRIL 2022

THE BATTLE AT BATTERY PARK

2022 BRIDGESTONE TIRES AHRMA NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES WORDS: JOSHUA SCHUCKER PHOTOS: PAULY CHAMBERS Every battle needs a battleground, and in AHRMA’s recent early-season ventures into South Carolina, the battleground was a highly regarded cornucopia of tacky red clay and pines in the western part of the state. Hearing that the 2022 season would debut a new venue for the South Carolina round fostered plenty of speculation and certainly placed a

great deal of pressure on Off-Road Director Tony Paul and company to ensure the new battleground would be comparable to the comfort and competition of the past. Nestled outside the rural town of Nesmith, Battery Park Off-Road quickly proved that it is a worthy home to the AHRMA Cross Country Series with a plethora of established trails, several

MX courses, and welcome amenities such as water and electric hook-ups for camping. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the facility lies about an hours drive to Myrtle Beach, where you can combine some Spring Break fun with your vintage motorcycle obsession. Everything was in place to ensure another successful event in the Palmetto State, but a confluence of external factors tried to steal the show just before the event. The warm climate of the region is often a factor in gathering many participants from the yet-to-warm-up northern states, but this year a rapid and drastic rise in fuel prices just prior to the event was surely a factor in many folks go/ no-go decisions. On top of that, the aforementioned warm climate was looking to be a bit of a misnomer…at least according to the consensus of most meteorologists. In fact, every “bad word” in the weather dictionary was conjured up by the forecast for the event’s weekend apart from snow and ice, but “potential for tornados” trumps snow and ice in my mind. The storyline was supposed to go something like this; warm APRIL 2022

temperatures along with severe storms and rain Friday into Saturday, followed by strong sustained winds bringing in a rapid drop in temperatures to greet Sunday’s race one participants with low-20s at race time. Daunting to be sure, and certainly another factor stacked against Battery Park’s debut. Thankfully, the awesome competitors of AHRMA made a strong showing despite all the obstacles with plenty of folks lining up for the races. And, while the forecast wasn’t explicitly wrong, because the weather went nearly every direction it was expected to, the duration and severity were as close to best-case-scenario as one could hope for. There was some bursts of rain and thunder, and although all were relatively short-lived, the outcome was assuredly evident in the puddles and a surface smear of mud during Saturday’s races. The wind did begin Saturday afternoon, although never gale force, it did lead to an early bedtime for most where twenty-four hours earlier campfires and bench racing dominated the pits. Sunday morning was cold, probably in the 20s as forecast, but perhaps on the higher end and warmed quickly to reasonable comfort. The good side of the wind and cold was a far dryer track on Sunday. Battery Park Off-Road is home to miles of single track and ATV trails, so Tony Paul had plenty of options to work with when laying out the four-mile course. Considering its proximity to the coast, the dominant soil is sand, and lots of it, and the general topography is flat as one would expect. The facility is home to a undulating MX course with great heaps of sand that create the best elevation

changes the property has to offer, and a few sections of this track were put to good use in the cross country course including a banked bowl turn that NASCAR would be proud of. Apart from that stretch of MX track near the finish line, the remainder of the course was found within the pine forest and ranged from long fast straights, to carving sweeping sand berms, to flowy single track. Oh, and whoops…lots of whoops. Sure, there were sections of manmade whoops in certain areas, but as is typical of sand courses, whoops are quickly and organically formed as braking bumps increase in amplitude and acceleration bumps do the same. The two reach out to one another and connect, eventually the whoops are everywhere! Post Vintage bikes made full use of their suspension advantage in these woods and rocketing a vintage bike with single digit travel was a workout and involved a few loose screws or “Hail-Mary’s” to maintain the pace of the front-runners. Saturday’s wetter conditions would cause some

problems with sand slurry intruding on vintage intake systems as more than one rider learned the hard way, but the course held up great considering the conditions. Sunday conditions improved greatly, and apart from a couple deep ruts in a few turns, the course was prime and lap times were dropping. In general, the course was praised for its varied layout and competitiveness with several easy sightlines for good spectating. Vintage Races Tim Williams was flying on his 1974 Yamaha MX as he took the lead from the start and steadily increased his margin over the remainder of the race to take Saturday’s overall win over forty-three competitors. Brett Reichart punished the whoops on his Puch in route to second overall and the Sportsman 200 Expert class with Drew Uth just behind for third and runner-up in class. Pauly Chambers hustled his Husqvarna into the top-five overall to take the informal honor of top intermediate rider and

the formal honor of Sportsman Open Intermediate winner. Chris Boyle’s clean Ossa would take the second spot. Vintage 60+ Expert was ripe with competition as the lead changed hands several times between Carl Altier III and Tim Grow. Altier wrestled the lead away from Grow on lap four and didn’t look back in capturing the win on his Bultaco, although Grow wasn’t far behind in the two-spot followed by another Bultaco of Mike Cluse rounding out the podium. Polly Grow took charge of the Post Vintage Women’s Intermediate class by claiming the win each day for a weekend sweep over Cross Country Coordinator Becky Hayes. Polly also tried her hand at Post Vintage 200 Intermediate in the afternoon race Saturday where she came away with a respectable finish in a competitive class. Although cold, Sunday brought clear skies and a dry track, where New Jersey native (they have sand too) Drew Uth was able to put his granular terrain skills on display as he and his Can-Am dueled with wicked

fast youngster Logan Holley for the overall win. Unfortunately for Logan, mechanical problems sidelined him on the last lap allowing Drew to claim the victory with Brett Reichart locking down another runner-up spot. Father/ son combo of Dave and Brock Kutskel battled with the son taking the bragging rights as he finished third overall ahead of Dave’s fourth. These four also took the top-four spots in an obviously fast Sportsman 200 Expert field. Despite Logan’s early exit in the overall ranking, he was still far enough ahead to claim the number one spot in the Sportsman Open Expert class with Scott Robirds and G. Scott Price going two-three. Dennis Mitchell took the lead from Fred Walker on lap two to win the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class while Saturday’s winner Tim Notestone was on the sidelines.

Devon Long (13D)

Post Vintage Races Hot off his win in Saturday’s morning race, Tim Williams once again put the #8X out front to set the pace lap one. But any hopes that Tim had to repeat the morning’s performance were not a part of Logan Holley’s plans. After lurking just five seconds behind the first time around, once again the phenom found his Husqvarna out front when he made it past Williams on lap two and outpaced the pack of fifty-six to see checkers on lap seven for the overall win. Tim would take second followed by the Yamaha IT200 of Mike Blackwell. Mike took the class win in the stacked Post Vintage 200 Expert class which consumed three of the top six spots. Three Post Vintage Women’s Expert riders took the green flag both day with Laci Horvath taking the commanding win on her Honda both days as she continues to hone her skills; seemingly faster with each round. Kelly Ashcraft (Yamaha) and Emily Reichart (Honda) are quick themselves and went two-three both days. John Schafer took advantage of Kevin Marshall going off-track and surrendering the lead to take the Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate win on Saturday. Chad Blechert and Dave Zike took second and third respectively to set the stage for their battle on Sunday where the pair took turns leading before Blechert made a white flag lap pass to win a mere two seconds ahead of Zike. ubiquitous Yamaha IT200, swapped Post Vintage 200 Intermediate wins on the weekend. Joe Brant, also on an IT, claimed the Post Vintage 50+ Expert win both days and a strong third overall on Sunday behind the same Holley/ Williams duo at the top of the leaderboard consecutive days. After Ryan Schafer walked away with the class win Saturday, David Leckie, Chris Cox, and Eric Bolin rode in a pack during Sunday’s event staying within one minute of each other throughout. The pack would hold in that formation across the finish line as the top three in Post Vintage Open Intermediate competition. Brian Holley, soon to be more famously known as “Logan’s Dad/Mechanic”, took a page from the kid’s book in putting his Husqvarna out front of the Pre-Modern Open Intermediate pack both days to take the checkers while Chris Boyle and Dennis Mitchell swapped the runner-up spot for the weekend. In a tip of the hat to the increasing presence and enthusiasm surrounding early dual-disk bikes, the Southeast region held a Disc Brake (Pre-2K) exhibition event following Saturday’s Post Vintage event. Logan Holley, Brian Schafer, Jay Powelson, Sean Brown, Greg Kemp, and Tony Paul all put in impressive rides and crossed the finish line in that order. Despite the malicious intentions of the weatherman and the gas pump, AHRMA’s first foray into eastern South Carolina was a success and provides plenty of optimism for the future of Battery Park Off-Road as a National event presence. Much appreciation to AHRMA’s Off Road and Cross-Country directors Tony Paul and Becky Hayes for all the travel, effort, and challenges that come with making it look so easy to hold an event of this scope. Obviously, this pairs needs a helping hand and big thanks go to those folks as well; Dennis and David Brown, Bill Ryburn, Chris Boyle, Tim and Polly Grow, Mike and Connie Zdybak, Craig Hayes, and Susan Blechert. Thanks, and gratitude, to Bridgestone Tires as it stepped up to support the 2022 National Cross-Country series as title sponsor. DIRT TRACK R OF THE MONTH HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN FLAT TRACK?

WHAT BIKE, MODEL, MAKE, SIZE DO YOU CURRENTLY RACE?

I started racing flat track about 20 years ago when I moved to Florida.

I love all style bikes. When I moved to Florida, I came down with an Elsinore 250 we had made into a flat track bike; it was an awesome bike, but I’m a little big for it. My brother, Roger, always raced Yamaha XS650s and TT 500; that’s how I got started with Yamahas. I have been building and riding them ever since.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE SPORT? I love the old-style motorcycles and the people; they’re like family and it’s awesome.

WHAT CLASSES DO YOU RUN? Right now, I run Sportsman 750 Flat Track and TT. In the past, I’ve run 70 Singles, Sportsman 600, Sportsman 750, and Super Twins. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE RACE/MOMENT OF DIRT TRACK? That’s a hard one. I’ve had so much fun and pleasure with the sport that it’s hard to pick just one time. If

I had to pick one, it would be my second race. The first race I didn’t even qualify. Competition back in those days was unbelievable. We were racing in Baker, Florida; I’m not sure of the name of the track. We were racing TT and Flat Track that day. I was racing on a Yamaha TT 500 class; I qualified in the TT class and was excited just about that. The race started and we took off. I was actually running third with three full rows of riders; my heart was pounding, and the adrenaline was flowing. It was awesome! One time, I made it all the way up to the front to run in first place! But it wasn’t long; I made a mistake in the corner and two guys got passed. I ended up in third place that day, but I will never forget it. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2022? SAME BIKE, DIFFERENT BIKE, MORE RACES? I like the big-bike class: Sportsman 750 WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM TRACK TO RACE? I want to go to Peoria; I never got the chance and would like to run it one time before I call it quits.
