What was your first bike? I know I’ve talked about mine being a Honda CRF150F, but I want to hear your story. In looking at our content and our membership, I’m working on more ways to showcase the folks that make this great organization what it is. And what better way than to take a look back at how it all started. We have some things in the works as far as looking at AHRMA’s history, but what’s your story? Send me some photos of way-back-when, along with the story of how you got the bike, what your first race was, how you did, etc, for a chance to be featured in a future magazine issue. Coming up in the September/October double issue, we’re going to take a look at the most recent AHRMA Classic MotoFest™ at Monterey, and share some stories of how/why folks chose the race number they’re running. Plus, we’ll showcase the awesome racing we have going on around the country, as always. see you on the track!

Changing times... R

ecently, we’ve seen challenges within the motorcycle racing (and track day) industry. The economic challenges, fuel prices, and other factors have changed the game temporarily. I know you all see it and feel it like we do, and it can be challenging for some members to continue a “normal” race program. We understand your challenges and thank you for your continued participation and support of your club. The reason I chose this topic now is because we have received a lot of feedback on the current challenges, and I want to let you all know that we are focused on these challenges. We are watching, tracking, and measuring our events carefully. We are working to understand the venues that make the most sense, the ways we can improve member experience, and how we can be better with our race program for the years ahead. We are the largest motorcycle racing club in the U.S. We pride ourselves on being an industry leader and influencer and we take our responsibilities seriously. If I could put our focus into one word, it would be “sustainability.” We want this club to be the best place to race for decades to come. In some cases, we are not just the best, but the only place to race certain bikes. We want to keep that support available for all of you while providing the service and member experience we are famous for. You have my commitment that we will continue to do that.

With all that is going on in the club and the industry, I feel I owe it to the membership to provide ongoing status updates. I will begin providing quarterly “Open Letters” to the members to inform on key happenings, initiatives, challenges, successes, and other items. Keep an eye out, and please provide your feedback. I want to close with a sincere “THANK YOU” to our members for your continued support of AHRMA. Renewing your memberships, providing feedback, and volunteering to support our race program all go a long way to creating sustainability for the organization. We exist to serve you. We want you to enjoy our racing and our environment, which is like nothing else out there. We recognize that during these times it takes a lot of commitment to remain active and involved. Just know that we are working hard on your behalf to ensure a great experience for the long haul. Now, let’s race!

Greetings AHRMA Family!

I

t seems that time passes more quickly every day and I can’t believe that AHRMA road racing will be embarking on our mid-west tour in a few short weeks. I encourage you to sign up as soon as you’ve confirmed that you can attend. This assists me greatly with planning, and those who know me understand that I’m all about making our events all about you, the member! It’s hard to believe, but Barber will be here before we know it; therefore, I’m sharing the following Barber Road Race requirements as posted on our website: 1.

2.

You must be a FULL AHRMA member – no exemptions. There are no weekend memberships for this event. Please refer to the 2022 AHRMA Handbook or go to ahrma.motorsportreg.com for more information on becoming an AHRMA member. You must participate in at least two (2) AHRMA road races over two (2) separate weekends in the current season. All riders are required to complete two (2) full races, accepting the race-finishing flag, be it checkered or red. Racing one (1) race with AHRMA and one (1) race with another organization WILL NOT count toward qualifying for Barber (with very limited waiver opportunities).

3.

NOTE: Talladega GP will be held the week preceding Barber. If using Talladega GP as a qualifying race, entry to Barber will be placed on-hold until qualifying is complete.

4.

Entries will be capped at 600 race entries per day.

5.

Barber is a no refund, no credit, pre-entry only event.

The following may apply for a waiver as an exception to the above: 1.

2.

10

Pro US racers can submit proof of participation in at least two (2) Pro 2022 road races to roadrace.director@ahrma.org to be considered to race at Barber in 2022. International racers can submit proof of participation in at least two (2) 2022 road races in their country of license to roadrace.director@ahrma.org to be considered to race at Barber in 2022. International waiver requests will be reasonably expedited.

3.

Domestic waivers will be considered once the pre-entry period has closed.

4.

ALL riders granted waivers must practice both Thursday and Friday.

Paddock Parking / Electric will be assigned as follows: 1.

Class sponsors that purchased Barber Parking/Electric with their contracts will be assigned per their specific contract.

2.

All other parking/electric spots will be assigned based on the order in which an individual signs up to road race at Barber in MSR, not the order that parking requests were submitted. The only exception is a non-racing class sponsor that did not pre-purchase a Barber spot. Those sponsors will be assigned based on request to park submission date. Parking requests will only be accepted online and can be accessed at: www.ahrma.org/2022-barber-parking-pass-requestroadrace-only/ I understand that last year some had an issue downloading and marking the map. If this is the case for you, please reach out to me and I will assist.

I do appreciate the opportunity to serve as AHRMA’s Road Race Director and hope to see you all out at an event soon!

CORNER Ramblers for making Laguna a great success. Finishing up these two great events on the west coast, we now shift focus towards the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This will be our second year in Sturgis and will be racing at the historic Jack Pine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. This year, we will be joined by all AHRMA off-road disciplines. Motocross, cross country, and trials will run during the first weekend of the rally and Dirt Track will run throughout the week with six races over four days.

AHRMA Announces Terry McPhillips as New Off-road Race Director

L

et me start out by saying how welcome everyone has made me feel for taking the off-road director position. Having been with AHRMA since 2006, this shouldn’t surprise me, after all, AHRMA has the best people in the world! As a small introduction to those that don’t know me: my love of all things two wheeled started in high school. While everyone else was looking to get a car, I was dreaming of getting a bike. It took two years of work to get my Mom to finally relent. But it’s been an addiction ever since! She still thinks it was the worst decision she ever made (and from her point of view, she’s probably right!). AUGUST 2022

Since then, I’ve been addicted to all forms of motorcycling. I don’t really care if it’s street riding, motocross, road racing, flat track, cross country, or trials, I love being involved with it. As far as competing, I raced dirt track in my early twenties (I stunk), motocross while stationed overseas (still stunk) and then stopped competing until joining AHRMA (still not fast, but having the time of my life!).

Have fun, be safe and ride fast!

Terry McPhillips TERRY MCPHILLIPS OFF-ROAD RACE DIRECTOR

AHRMA and its members have become an obsession with me. Having traveled all over the US to race with AHRMA and having been a regional coordinator, all I can say is that I love what we do and love the people that we do it with. My primary objective is to make the sport I love better. I look forward to serving both AHRMA, it’s members, it’s promoters, track owners and vendors! I am open to all suggestions and comments. You can’t always get what you want...

I

t’s come to my attention that I haven’t submitted a column for the AHRMA MAG since March of this year, so with everything going on in AHRMA, I figured it was time to do what I do... communicate!

AHRMA has been working towards automating as much of the timing and scoring functionality as possible. The Road Race (RR) team has streamlined our ability to get results and series points published on ahrma.org, and contingency reporting to our contingency partners within days of each RR event. The Off-Road (OR) team has been working to track motocross results in Trackside, which has accelerated posting results and points, and Cross Country uses Moto-Tally’s online scoring system with results available one or two days after an event. Dovetailing with these efforts to eliminate technical issues and simplify manual scoring, a committee was formed to determine how race numbers should be configured and managed. In addition, it has become difficult to assign numbers since many are being held by expired members, associate members, and members who no longer race. What has resulted are the following policies which have been approved for implementation. These policies will be included in the AHRMA Handbook, starting in 2023.

Race Number Policies -

The first policy outlines what is allowed in your race number. The second policy outlines when a race number will be returned to the available number pool.

Race Number Configuration Policy Allowed in race numbers:

• one to three positions • numbers (i.e. 0-9) (see disallowed below - single digit 0 and single digit 1 are not allowed as race numbers) • One following alpha letter • If following letter used, the letter must be • upper case • at least 3” tall • ON THE BIKE Disallowed in race numbers: • More than one letter • More than three positions (i.e. No four-digit numbers, or combinations of numbers & letters in any form) • The following letters: B, D, I, O, S, and Z • Punctuation marks or special symbols (i.e. “’”, “.”, “,”, etc.) • Leading letters • Leading zeros • Single digit zero - “0” or single digit one - “1” Race numbers that are in existence prior to 7/1/2022 that do not comply with these requirements must be changed by12/31/2023.

Releasing Assigned Race Numbers Policy

This policy is effective immediately. Numbers will be released back into available race number inventory as follows: • Full member hasn’t raced within the past 24 months (2 years)* • Lifetime member hasn’t raced within the past 24 months (2 years)* • Associate member is not eligible to hold a race number • Membership lapses/expired for more than six months • Numbers assigned to weekend members expire when the membership expires *Exceptions may be made by Race Directors on an event by event basis.

NOTE: Those of you who have numbers with disallowed items no doubt will be wondering what you do next. You can select your new number(s) when you enter an event through AHRMA.MotorsportReg.com or contact a designated event organizer for your discipline(s). Designated event organizers are: •

Road Racing - Faynisha Pentecost ahrma@oneracing.org

Off-Road Racing - Terry McPhillips offroad.director@ahrma.org

Dirt Track, Richard Brodock - dirt.track@ahrma.org

Once you have your new number(s), make sure you update your bike. If you don’t run the number that is assigned to you and you don’t clear it through registration at that event, you may be subject to a protest which could result in being disqualified.

You can’t always get what you want You can’t always get what you want But if you try sometimes You might find You get what you need

BUILD A BIKE FOR THE PASTOR

WORDS & PHOTOS: STEVE HUDSON

H

ello, my name is Steve Hudson. I’m the AHRMA chaplain and I want to introduce “Build a Bike for the Pastor Auction,” a charity vintage bike auction to be held at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, in October. MY BACKGROUND IN MOTORCYCLE MINISTRY Why don’t I take a minute and tell you about my experience in motorcycle pastoring? For more than 20 years I annually attended 17 Supercross races, 4 FCAMX camps and 12 AMA Pro Motocross. I’ve made a lot of friends in the motorcycle community over 20 years. I have been fortunate to preside over weddings of countless racers like Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto. Folks might wonder what a motorcycle chaplain actually does. After a serious crash, somebody needs to go to the hospital with the injured rider and make sure the family knows they’re safe. During the races, I walk the pits helping where I can, whether it’s holding bikes, talking to members, and/or occasionally advising on personal issues when needed. I also follow up with injured riders and their families from the previous month.

a car while riding my motorcycle to preach at the Tennessee Motocross National. A pizza driver hit me at a stoplight. I was wearing my helmet and protective gear, just in case you wondered. I didn’t even break an arm or a collarbone like you guys do. My head hit the ground and I suffered a traumatic brain injury. During the next five years, with help from the Lord and doctors, I started to recover. During those five years, I missed the ministry with motorcycle folks. In November of 2020 Mitch Barnes, the Jemco owner, called me and asked, “do you have any gas left in the preaching tank?” I said yes! He suggested that I interview with Curt Comer, Executive Director at the time, and in February of 2021 I interviewed and came aboard as the AHRMA chaplain. SO WHAT ABOUT THIS AUCTION? I want to tell you about a cool opportunity that some AHRMA members are doing to help me raise my financial support. When I come to the races to pray for you, to go to the hospital with you, to encourage you to stay married, to convince you that rehab is the right move, etc, I have to raise the funds. Outside donations from our members are what help me get to the races. Here are the details of the auction. There are four bike builders building

four vintage bikes which will be auctioned off via a live auction at Barber to help me raise funds for my travel in 2023. These builders are donating their time and their beautiful motorcycles to help my cause. All bikes will be available to see and bid on in-person at Barber, and those in attendance will get to vote on the “winning bike.” I hope you will consider sending in a bid on the bikes. We are going to try to get these started in some manner with online bidding a couple weeks prior to Barber. We’re still working out some of the details, but here is a list of potential auction bikes: • • • • • • •

1962 Honda Cub 50cc 1964 Honda Dream 1967 Honda CB 125 1974 Suzuki TM 125 1975 Suzuki TM 100 1976 Honda XR 75 1976 Suzuki RM 100

If there’s ever anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. EMAIL: stevehudson7@gmail.com PHONE: (704) 906-4040; just text me that you’re an AHRMA member and I’ll call you back.

LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE You should probably know that things really changed for me in the summer of 2015. After 20 years of traveling about 30 weekends a year without any real problems, I got hit by

started racing in 1959 at the age of 17 because he had some older friends who introduced him to the sport. His first race was a scramble which nowadays is known as a motocross. He began racing flat track at the age of 18.

f you have been involved with AHRMA Northwest for any extended length of time, you have witnessed, chatted with, or became friends with a man named Charlie (Chas) Higdon! This past June, Charlie turned 80 years young. You may know Charlie as the man in the Carhart overalls or the volunteer that is always willing to lend a hand. Charlie competes in trials, cross country, and motocross; he is the classic example of the Iron Butt at most events.

Charlie said that his racing idol was Carroll Resweber, a flat track racer. Charlie surprised Stephen and myself when he said that he rode a Sportster for the motocross, Charlie laughed and said, “there were no bumps back then.” He won the Sturgis scramble in 1961 on a 1960 Vellocette, and the next day he rode the flat track. When asked how he did, he chuckled and said, “horrible I couldn’t get out of my own way!”

At his 80th birthday party in Bend, Oregon, we sat down with him to chat and do a brief interview with the help of his friend, Stephen Newell. Charlie began riding motorcycles at the age of 14. His first motorcycle was a Harley-Davidson 165. He

Back in the early days, Charlie’s nickname was Charlie Cornstalk because he was from Iowa, the Corn State.

Picture of a print of Charlie and a friend goofing around. Charlie is balancing on a motorcycle. Around the age of 17.

Charlie continued racing, raising his family, enjoying married life, and working as both a long-haul truck driver and a loader operator in a granite quarry. Charlie lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, until 1984 when he moved to Redding, California, where he currently resides with his wife, Mavis.

was a 750 Triumph on the flat track at Hanford, California. When Stephen asked if Charlie did any better, Charlie recalled, “yeah I did pretty good there, I don’t remember how good, but better than last.” He won the Vintage San Jose Mile in the early 2000’s, and has had national championships in trials, motocross, and cross country for AHRMA, earning these on bikes like a Dick Mann Twin A10 and a Goldstar, too. His favorite AHRMA event now is Bushey Ranch in Canby, California, because he gets to stay in the promoter’s motorhome and they feed him. Plus, he gets to try out the track before anyone else. Charlie has had smooth sailing for racing with very few injuries. He hurt

When he moved to California, he began riding motorcycles after a seven or eight year hiatus; Charlie enjoyed riding behind the Lake Shasta Dam. Charlie joined AHRMA in the late 1990’s after moving to California. His first bike in AHRMA 16

himself on the road riding his friend, Herb Wolf’s street bike. While trail riding, he broke his foot. He also got injured at Bushey Ranch last season in the cross country and had to get stitches in his leg.

Charlie Higdon and Joe Klokkevold vmx at Bushey Ranch

A few chuckles during the interview involved his current and future racing status. When asked how many more years he is going to race, Charlie laughed and said, “as long as I get tea and cookies, I am going to keep going.” Charlie was asked what his current race bikes were and he smiled and said, “other people’s!” His race number is 42A, but since he mostly borrows a bike from Jeff Bushey, Stephen Newell, or the Poole Family, 42A is not usually seen on the bike. If you want to check him out at the next race, look for him on any of his current bikes: a Goldstar for the trials, a Penton for cross country, and an A65 Twin for motocross. The reason he gets to ride these is because he has no problem starting them!

Charlie riding the trials at Burrows Ranch

Charlie said his favorite part about motorcycles and AHRMA is being outside and having fun! He also agreed with Stephen Newell who mentioned the people and the family feel of it. Stephen said that Charlie is one of the most respected and popular racers; Charlie piped up saying, “and good-lookin’” on the West Coast! Happy 80th Birthday, Charlie! Cheers to many more years of motorcycle adventures and having fun!

BRIAN SLARK MEET

AHRMA Grand Marshall for Barber Motorsports Park WORDS: GRAHAM FOSTER PHOTOS COURTESY OF: BRIAN SLARK

T

o anyone involved with Barber, AHRMA, or vintage motorcycles in general, the name of Brian Slark should be quite familiar. October 7-9, 2022, marks the 17th year of the Barber Vintage Festival, and this year, Brian will be honored as Grand Marshal for the event. But just who is Brian Slark? I recently had a chance to sit down and have a chat with Brian. His achievements are well documented online, including the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, a long association with the Barber Motorcycle Museum, and AHRMA Trustee and Road Race Committee Member, so I decided instead to ask him about some special moments in his career.

EARLY DAYS - TRIALS Brian’s early days in Southeast London found him mad keen on motorbikes, as his Dad often took him to watch the exciting speedway races. At age 15, he managed to attach a 50cc Power Pack engine to a bicycle, and he was hooked. Some of his early mounts included 250 and 350 Matchlesses and a 197cc James Commando Trials with a whopping 4 horsepower. After serving a brief stint in the Royal Air Force as an Airframe Mechanic at age 17, Brian left and bought a Greeves 197 Scottish in 1959 from John Surtees Motorcycles (yes, THAT John Surtees). Now riding trials regularly, his skills were steadily improving. After one particular trial at Canada Heights, he found himself in a tie for first place. The winner was to be decided by a timed lap of the scrambles course. Being “young and stupid,” he found himself at times with both legs on the same side of the bike but ended up the victor! After witnessing this performance, his friends told him he should really take up scrambles.

JOINING MATCHLESS One day, Brian was riding his Greeves trials bike, which was also his everyday transport, past the Matchless factory. He stopped by to inquire about possible employment, and was greeted by the great man himself, ISDT and SSDT star Hugh Viney, who said, “So you want to ride motorcycles, do you then, son?” To which Brian replied, “Yes, sir!” and he was hired. After some time in the shop, he was assigned a job of “runner 18

up.” This involved starting the new bikes on their stands and checking oil return lights, etc. Sometimes this meant starting 25-30 600cc singles a day, not a job for a weak right leg. He then progressed to be a road tester with many hours spent riding in all weather, day after day. Later, he was moved to the competition shop where many special bikes were built, including Gordon Jackson’s famous 1-dab 1961 Scottish bike, reg. No. 187BLF. The factory supplied Gordon with two bikes, the 187BLF and a spare machine. The factory didn’t use air cleaners at this time as they felt it affected the carburation at slow speeds, so the engines wore out in a hurry. Brian’s job was to ride the works trials bike down to Gordon’s farm and ride the clapped-out bike back to the factory for a full rebuild. During Brian’s time at AMC/Matchless, he met Californian Bud Ekins who was over for the ISDT events. After a social evening, which may have involved some Scotch, Brian was invited over

to California. Riding in the desert was as foreign to Brian as the English mud was to Bud, so the interaction was beneficial to both. During this time, he was around Lee Marvin, Keenan Wynn, and Bobby Darin, who Brian taught to ride. Brian remembers that Bud’s house was always open to friends and visitors.

ON TO CALIFORNIA After a brief stint on a CZ, Nick Nicholson offered Brian a Greeves to ride, and told him that he should ride the ISDT on the Isle of Man. A few weeks back in the UK weather, however, persuaded Brian to return to California sooner rather than later. Upon his return, he worked for BSA/ Triumph West before accepting a position with Norton/AJS. During this time, he imported and built several Rickman and Cheney off road bikes, including a Cheney 441 for himself.

Great times were had riding with Norton sales manager, Mike Jackson, Cycle Magazine’s Cooke Neilson, Cycle Guide’s Walt Fulton, and Motorcyclist Tony Murphy. to the sport. He is very complimentary of Jeff, saying that he really took care of the volunteers, who are an essential aspect of an organization such as AHRMA. Through AHRMA events, Brian made the acquaintance of and got to know George Barber, and the rest is history. He spent the remainder of his career at Barber Motorsports as Technical Advisor until his recent retirement. While at Barber, he wore many hats including Concours Judge, restoration specialist, museum display designer, and was the most knowledgeable of museum guides. I finished my chat with some simple questions: Best bike you wish you still had? Cheney Victor

UP NEXT: AHRMA After a period running his own shop in California, Brian sold it in 1985, and in 1986, he was in Daytona checking out the vintage race scene. Here, he met Jeff Smith, who told Brian that he should volunteer and get involved with AHRMA. This he certainly did, serving as a Trustee and also as a member of the Road Race Committee. Brian said that the period working with Jeff and Dick Mann was a very special time that gave him a chance to give back

T

he 2022 Dick Mann Team Challenge (DMTC) is different from that of 2021 due to an effort to ease the travel commitments and expenses in this year of very high fuel costs. In 2021, each team was comprised of one team member for each of the five AHRMA disciplines (Road Race, Dirt Track, Vintage Motocross, Vintage Cross Country, and Trials), and the commitment was to ride all four DMTC events. This proved to be extremely prohibitive in 2022, so the commitment for each team member is two events (very few team members will do all four). This also is why some individuals are on more than one team, doing different disciplines; it was necessary to make up the required 16 “rides” for each team. There are five more people participating in the 2022 DMTC than there were in 2021, but only four teams instead of five.

R

are is it when history has the opportunity to repeat itself. But that’s exactly what’s going to happen for die-hard motocross fans when the International Motocross Museum hosts a second fundraising event. Last year’s premier event was a sellout and was thought by many to be a once in a lifetime opportunity, but the IMM will be making history anew by hosting “An Evening with the Champions II.” If you missed the first event, now is your chance to spend a day and an evening with legends like Rick “Too Hip” Johnson, Bob “Hurricane” Hannah, Tony DiStefano, Gerrit Wolsink, Heikki Mikkola, Jeff Smith, Gunnar Lindstrom and their fabulous

factory bikes. They are right now negotiating with several of the other top US riders from that era. The Evening with the Champions II fundraiser is actually more like a day with the Champions and will be held at the fabulous Pinstripes restaurant in the north Chicago area. The date is Wednesday September 21, just days before the historic Motocross of Nations on Sept 24th and 25th. at the world-famous Red Bud motocross park – just a short drive from the IMM venue. Individual Deluxe tickets are $500 per seat, but this year they also have table discounts of 20%; buy a table of 12 and each ticket is only $400 per person. This is for the whole day and a deluxe sit-down evening dinner, a great way for your business or group to be part of this wonderful event. You can also bid to sit at the table of your favorite rider! All details are available at: www.internationalmotocrossmuseum. org/events If you are interested in sponsoring the event and/or museum, check the website contact link, they will get back with you promptly.

hen you go out for practice, do you have a plan? Do you have specific goals you are trying to accomplish, or is it more of a “just scrape the rust off” approach? How hard do you push in practice? Practice is a vital part of being successful on the racetrack. Whether you are working on a specific corner, checking your gearing, suspension, jetting, or learning a new track, you should always try to have a specific goal when you practice. Having a goal gives you focus and makes it easier for you to quantify any improvements you might end up making. One mistake many racers make is to put too much effort into lap times during practice. Of course, if your learning a new track, then lap times are one of the best indicators of how well you are learning it, but when you’re at a track you already know, pushing for lap times during practice is typically less productive than having a specific goal. Instead of just trying to go as fast as you can, try

PRACTICE SAFE PRACTICE

instead to focus on your worst corner or a section you tend to struggle in or get passed in often. Another mistake I see many racers making all the time is pushing too hard or taking big chances with traffic during practice. It is impossible to win practice, but it’s very easy to ruin your day, weekend or even a season with one brief lapse in judgment. If you are racing, there is an understandable sense of urgency to get around a rider that’s in front of you and also a tangible reward for passing them. When you are practicing however, there is not. There is simply no reason or excuse to make a risky pass in practice. Let’s face it, we really don’t even want to see ANY risky passes, but sometimes a calculated risk IS needed in a race. Putting yourself and another competitor at risk when there is no trophy, no points and all the time in the world to make a better, safer pass is simply bad riding. I currently have 4 friends that this year alone have had season affecting injuries that

occurred in practice. Some were self inflicted, others were from mistakes someone else made, but the bottom line is that if there is no reward, then why take any additional risks? It’s better to roll off and follow that slower rider for a turn, 2turns or even a full lap, until you can make a clean, safe pass than it is to rush in and dive bomb them just because you’re “on a flier” or don’t want to wait. So next time you roll out of the pits and hit the track, take a moment beforehand and try to have a plan for the session. Don’t worry about lap times, keep your head on a swivel for bonehead moves from others and take your time to set up nice clean passes. You will be a lot safer and you might just find yourself having better results because of it too. See you at the track!!

to practice riding in the rain, most chose to hover under paddock tents and visit with friends. By the end of the day, the sun was shining and laps were being put down as racers broke in new engines and tuned their bikes. Thankfully, the overarching weather for the remainder of the weekend was clear skies and, barring a few delays due to lightning-strike sirens, the weather cooperated. Race 1 included the Boulder Motorsports-sponsored Sound of Thunder 2 class, the Next Gen Superbike class sponsored by Appalachian Mountain Tours and AHRMA’s featured Vintage Cup, sponsored by RoadracingWorld.com. This year’s Vintage Cup features the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class sponsored by Tim’s CBX and the International CBX Owners Association.

Sound of Thunder 2 was the largest class of the weekend with sixteen gridded riders. On Saturday, Dakota Wolter (65W) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, put in the fastest lap in this class on his 2006 Bimota DB5 with a 1:34:446 lap time. This was enough for him to squeak a win over Underground Racing 811 rider Shane Quigg (762) with Maryland rider Arnold Hastings (38A) rounding out the top three. Quigg was charged up on Sunday, and his determination showed on the track as he took first place. Ivan Deborg (6D) had fastest lap in this class on Sunday at 1:33:872; his efforts earned him the second position overall, with Hastings holding on to third again and Wolter finishing fourth. Tenths of seconds separated fifth through seventh as nail-biting action played out on the track.

MOTORSPORTS PARK Pilot Leathers/Larrabure Framingrider Brian Larrabure (14) of Calabasas, California, laid down consistent laps aboard his 2016 Pierobon X80 both Saturday and Sunday taking a double-header in the Next Gen Superbike class followed both days by Christian Jensen (576) aboard his Ducati 888. B&S Racing’s Matthew Estell (69B) took third on Saturday and Tom Bishop (730) of New Hampshire took third on Sunday.

In the Vintage Cup class, it was Stiger, Illinois, rider Jeremy Maddrill (1p) that would top the box both days. On Saturday, Maddrill got a clean start and immediately took and held the lead until the checkered flag. Matt Esterline (237) from Portage, Michigan, on a 1977 Honda CB750F took second, with James Brown (48J) of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, riding his 1977 Kawasaki KZ650 rounding out the podium. Alexander Cook (092), riding a 1979 Moto Guzzi Le Mans, out of Dublin, Ohio, finished fourth with Edward Barna (X72) on a 1982 Honda

CB750F from Randoph Center, Vermont, in fifth.

On Sunday, Maddrill, in a replay of Saturday, led the field for the duration of the race, easily taking the checkered flag for the win while Esterline repeated his second-place finish. Cook finished third as Brown experienced a clutch issue, which moved him off the podium into fourth. The 200 GP class, sponsored by Kincaid Legacy Racing, had thirteen entries, and these guys and gals put on a show! AHRMA Trustee Tim Terrell (220) was on fire and earned first place both days. Chris Marlowe (171) would take second on

Saturday while Owen McCarty (265) would take second-place honors on Sunday. Bill Doran (6) remained consistent and took third place both days. The CB160 class is always a crowdpleaser. At this event, the wall was too high so the riders had no handler, but still had to bump start their bikes for an entertaining take-off. Tim Terrell’s groans could be heard as he had an issue with his belly pan and had to pull off prior to the start on Saturday. Chris Marlowe didn’t hold back and took top honors on Saturday; however, Terrell took top honors on Sunday turning a 1:53:619 lap leaving Marlowe with second. On Saturday, Sawyer Hamilton (265) was

AHRMA offers colleges and universities a unique opportunity to design, build, and race electricpowered motorcycles in our Varsity Challenge competition. At this year’s event, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Montreal were in attendance. The University of Michigan fielded a 110V ATLAS Spark machine piloted by David McPherson (594) of Osteen, Florida. These engineering students, with laptops in hand, worked through many bugs and teething problems early in the weekend culminating in a second-place finish on Sunday in the Formula Lightning class. The University of Montreal is in the early stages of developing their program to compete in AHRMA’s 2023 Varsity Challenge and were on hand to watch and learn. New Zealand’s Stephen Briggs was on hand to take out the CR & S Britten V1000. When this beauty fired up, it drew a crowd and Briggs

put on a show as fans and riders alike gathered at the fence to enjoy the sight and sound of this machine. This bike was the first customerproduced bike for Roberto Crepaldi of Café Racers & Superbikes (CR & S) and loaned to the factory from new for their racing efforts. The black and yellow color scheme was based on his racing team colors. After a successful history of racing at the

World Championship level, it was retired and rebuilt after 1997, put on display, and not run for many years following. In 2014 it was sold and recommissioned with a tear-down and thorough going-through with plans to run the bike in demonstrations as witnessed by those in attendance.

Blake Lawson competed against five others in the Modern Classic Novice, he earned a total of 12 points. Scott Steward earned 162 points, although he did take first in the Air Cooled Mono. Beginner Jenny Newell swept the board with zero points the whole day! Wayne Hawes and Jeff Bushey laid out the cross country course. The cows decided to help again by eating some of the signage. Another hurdle was that the free-range cattle could not be wrangled in during the race. Notification made at the rider’s meeting mentioned that the cross country could be a rodeo and the racers needed to watch out for roaming cattle. It was a dusty start as the shotgun signaled the beginning of the cross country. AUGUST 2022

northwest Joe Klokkevold (117) got the hole shot. Marc Audifred (22A) in the 50+ Post Vintage class took first place overall. The Post Vintage first place finishers included: Pre Modern Jim Buckalew (5T), Open Brian Larson (37W), 60+ Novice Zim Udovich (80), 60+ Intermediate Mike Gorrono (74), 60+ Expert Stephen Newell (648), Support Sidney Mocke (s97). Winners of the Vintage classes included: Sportsman 200 Expert Klokkevold (117), Sportsman 200 Intermediate Pete Jorgenson (195), Sportsman Open Intermediate Zak Valentine (65R), Classic Intermediate Debbie Poole (70T), Classic Novice Mike Nadeker (49), Premier Expert Jeff Atkins (3V), 60+ Expert Jeff Bushey (B60), 70+ Novice Cy Yee (256). Unfortunately, Jorgenson and Layne Hanna (15L) crashed in the same spot on the course at different times; after getting checked out by medical personnel and time to heal, they were both ready to race at Lakeview, Oregon, just a few short weeks later.

Thank you to the cross country class sponsor: West Country Stables. Rob Poole laid out the motocross track used on Sunday. Jeff Bushey worked very hard to keep the track moist and even slick in places! Thank you Motion Pro for sponsoring the motocross. Come Sunday, there were 14 races! Chet Mauer (67) not only snatched the holeshot in the first race of the day, but was also the first to see the checkered flag. Race 9 had nine racers in the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class. In moto one, Charles Haines (35h) took the holeshot on his Maico; David Stanton (710) on a Bultaco got the holeshot in moto 2. Bushey (B60) took the overall win on his Penton. In the Premier 500 Expert class (race 7) Kelly Shane (74Q) snapped up the lead in both motos; unfortunately in moto 2 Shane had mechanical issues and Peter Cruttenden (451) won the class. In the Vintage 60+ Expert class, Steve Gard (92R) took third, Dallas Nyblod (2y) won the first moto and finished second in the second moto, and

Bellicitti (59f) got second in the first moto, but snatched up the win in the second moto to clinch the overall win. Other results can be found on the AHRMA website. The Iron Butt award, sponsored by Metal Restro, was won by the following for participating in all three events: Sidney Mocke, Tim Jackson, Stephen Newell, Kelly Shane, Mike Nadeker, Jeff Bushey, and Cy Yee. Regrettably, the cows did not compete in the motocross, so they did not earn the Iron Butt Award for the weekend. As a public service announcement: no cows were harmed over the weekend! A brief shoutout to the other sponsors for the region: LMP Inc. the Northwest region sponsor, The Jorgenson Family for the Premier Class, and Kaptured by Kate Photography for the Women’s Class.

WE ARE... ASHCRAFT! AHRMA MID-ATLANTIC AND NORTHEAST REGIONAL MX/CC AT ASHCRAFT FARM, JUNE 11/12, 2022 WORDS: JOSHUA SCHUCKER PHOTOS: TEAM REICHART

I

t is incredible to see how much fervor has been generated in just a few short years for the now-annual throwdown between the Mid-Atlantic (MA) and Northeast (NE) Regions of AHRMA off-road racing at the Ashcraft family’s beautiful and sprawling farm just north of renowned Penn State University. Early season conversations often have a “you going to Ashcraft’s?” thrown in somewhere with the Ashcraft name being blessed with a touch of reverence reserved for special experiences. Certainly, the event’s reputation has been earned and continually fostered by the Ashcraft family, who are collectively huge supporters of each region’s year-long series, boasting several very competitive (if not dominating) participants in nearly every MidAtlantic and many Northeast events each year, and some of the friendliest

and most hospitable hosts you have encountered. As much as all the competitors appreciate the kindness and generosity of Brian, Lisa, and the rest of the family, that will only get you so far. Races need racetracks… and cheeseburgers. Here again, the family excels as the grass track motocross and cross-country courses are epic, and the farm-grown, grass-fed beef used in the family’s concession stand cheeseburgers is equally epic! Hint…try the “Uncle Brian.” Some look forward to the event so much that rumor has it there was a tongue-in-cheek underground movement amongst a few MidAtlantic folks to expand the Ashcraft experience into a full-blown weeklong festival of vintage dirt biking (AshStock?). While the week-long adventure may not have happened (yet…), the weekend packed in plenty of action.

Motocross, hosted by Ed Roman and Merritt Brown of the NE region, kicked off the weekend’s events Saturday. Once again, the action took place in the familiar grass field and points were contributing to both the NE and MA motocross championships. A few changes were incorporated into this year’s grass track in an effort to keep things fresh and exciting. In general, the course was run in reverse from the previous year’s, although the course was slightly reconfigured to keep traffic flowing in the same direction through the popular mini gravity cavity. Unfortunately, as experienced earlier in the season, practice was delayed as the sign-up crew again experienced significant growing pains with the scoring software adopted by the MA crew for the 2022 season. Frustrations were apparent on all

sides, but eventually the hiccup was sorted, and race orders posted. The volunteers are very hopeful that the computer issues have been defeated after this experience and major improvement will be noted moving forward. Practice sessions began with only ribbon marking the way in an otherwise untouched grass field. Riders took this opportunity to learn the reverse flow with a few added zigs, and perhaps too many zags, as well as a new down and up 180-degree left-hand turn by the driveway with a cool kicker jump halfway down and a lip at the exit to throw the rider back onto the field above. As race 1 lined up for the rubber-band start, riders were confident that the course had proven itself to be vintage friendly, as expected, while still majorly enjoyable for more modern “Next-Gen” classes. Thankfully, the track crew heard enough feedback about the excess zags in the new layout, and quickly did a re-ribbon of that section to improve the flow. With the pin pulled, the rubber band flew to open a day of great racing as moto one roared into the right-hand first turn. Races well into the double digits were required to accommodate the spectacular turnout for the event. Early races had to deal with a touch of slickness as the standing grass was laid flat in the turns, which are often off-camber as a result of the topography of the sloping pasture that is home to the course. Later races were free of the slick grass as the seasonable summer heat and bright sunny day either dried out the fallen grass, or enough churning rubber threw the grass off course.

Sanford Quickel (299) and Laci Horvath (996)

The MA crew took their turn at the wheel on Sunday as competition turned to the woods for the region’s typical three-race format cross country. Akin to the prior day’s MX, this portion would also pay points for both regions. As with last year’s event, the trail crew took the time to create separate courses to cater to the strengths of the various eras of motorcycles used in AHRMA competition. This time around, the Vintage and Post-Vintage races would be held on a shorter course while the disc brake race (PreModern and up to 1999) would add a more difficult loop to the earlier courses. Each race kicked off with a packed house on the slightly uphill starting area. In step with Saturday’s crowd, the number of entries was

spectacular with nearly 50 riders on the line for races 1 and 3 and almost 80 for the Post-Vintage race 2. Races 1 and 2 headed quickly into the woods with a left turn and worked through established single track as the course ascended to the power line clearing that runs along the base on the mountain on the north end of the Ashcraft property. The power line serves as the casual delineation point between the short course and the enhanced version slated for race 3. Similar to Saturday’s grass track, the course is roughly followed in reverse over previously used trail from other seasons or adjacent trails through similar areas. As such, the “sink holes,” a popular spectator destination, occurs early in the lap

Ronnie Miller (57)

Off-cambers remained an added technical aspect of this course even when dry, as the ground has been packed hard from decades of trampling hooves and resists forming berms in some areas. But apart from some unavoidable dust later in the day, the course held up wonderfully and the competition was top-notch. A true highlight of the day was everyone’s number-one fan, Dan Zell, fervently cheering with personalized pit-board messages as riders ascended the new down/up turn with a little extra oomph from the unexpected motivation. A very cool addition to the fun, thanks Dan! AUGUST 2022

of the grass track area where riders were let loose on the back half of the MX track before transitioning into a fun trail with several small jumps that pushed the riders to a driveway crossing and sprint up a final open Craig Shenigo (945) field stretch. A small winding section of trail is all that remains before the scoring this year. With a large crowd already tent. Overall, a very enjoyable course in place (and a familiar pit-board), with enough challenge to entertain, the riders took a unique path through but tame enough for the majority of the various depressions in the woods riders on limited-travel older bikes. on the west end of the course. Race 3 was given the opportunity to A touch of moisture in the area, climb the mountain and experience relatively steep ingress and egress, the bounty of excellent single track and a healthy dose of exposed roots therein. Following the exit from the provided an early challenge to the “sink holes,” the disc brake bikes riders. A couple slippery off-camber were directed uphill on a rocky dirt descents followed before the riders road that began a delicious mix once again found themselves along of worn-in and fresh single-track, the power line. Traveling parallel to dirt road blasts, and switchbacks this feature, the course darted in and as the course wound up and down out of several narrow sections of trail the hillside. Of course, a generous with a blast down the dirt power line amount of roots, rocks, and tight access road between. Ultimately the trees are to be expected on any path headed above the power line Pennsylvania mountain. Eventually for the last time in a flowing uphill the disc brake-only fun concludes, section that looped back and forth and the course rejoined in the power toward the high point of the “short” line area to follow the established course before skirting the perimeter

path from earlier races. A touch of light rain in the middle of race 3 added a bit of aura, but never got to the point of creating much additional challenge. Another masterful event at Ashcraft Farm with an outstanding turnout which is sure to self-promote and grow next year’s event. Hope to see you there! Major appreciation goes out to the entire extended Ashcraft family for welcoming the series to the farm and to the Spayd and Grove families for the assistance in course preparation leading up to the event. Francis Mark (17c) and his beautiful 1951 Matchless 500 bested current national points leader Preston Palmer (59d) in the Dinosaur class with Beno Rodi (27e) rounding out the Podium. Mark would also go on to take the Buck Cunningham (47), Richard Brodock (278)

win in Brakeless Heavyweight with Scott Fluck (98) taking second over Daniel Beher (116). Beher would finish the day with a second-place finish behind Richard Brodock (278) in Lightweight Brakeless with Buck Cunningham (47) grabbing third place. Charles Oakes (796) would take two wins on the night with his first coming in the 50+ class with Mitch Barnes (326) edging out Jon Cook (60) for second place. Oakes’ other win came in Heavy Vintage class over Joe Gretchen (83) and Charlie Williams (2s), who came in second and third respectively. Barnes would also grab second place behind Brodock in Sportsman 250. JL Reas

ay two of AHRMA Dirt Track back-to-back in the Midwest, we moved 30-minutes down the road to Cincy Speedway in Cincinnati, Ohio. The fairground’s track is relatively new with only a handful of races on it but the builders and track crew already have it dialed in. Day two started off as a mirror image of day one, with Francis Mark (17, Dinosaur class) and Richard Brodock (278, Brakeless Lightweight class) coming out firing and taking wins. Preston Palmer (59d) would finish second adding to his points lead over Beno Rodi (27e) who would finish third. weekend, landing fourth in the series just one point behind Gary Moore. With two wins in Sportsman 125, JL Reas (48) leaves the weekend just 14 points behind series leader Robert Mustin. Brodock would grab his second Sportsman 250 win of the weekend and extend his lead in the series to 45 points after missing the first 5 races due to injury. Mitch Barnes (326) would climb several positions in the series points race with another second-place finish in Sportsman 250 and Tim Banks (184) with a fourth-place finish now sits two points behind Buck Cunningham who moved into third place in the series after the weekend. Banks would also take third in Lightweight

Vintage and move into a solid third place in the points championship. However, with another win, Wyatt Campbell (72) would leave the weekend with a 65-point lead in Lightweight Vintage. Campbell would grab his second win of the night in the Spanish Cup over Joe Gretchen (83) and leave the weekend with a dominating 144-point lead in the championship. With a solid holeshot, Jon Cook (60) looked to grab his first win of the year in Sportsman 750 aboard his Yamaha XS but with an inside move, Brodock would sneak by and win the drag race down the straight to make the pass stick on his Triumph. Cook would finish second behind Brodock with

Rodi finishing out the top 3. When the dust settled, Cook would move into second in points, just one point ahead of Rodi and 23 points back from Brodock. Barnes would take the win over Banks in 50+, moving him into fourth behind Banks in points. In one of the best races of the night, Francis Mark (30) would fend off a pair of hard-charging riders in Beher and Fluck in Brakeless Heavyweight. Two rounds on two different tracks in two different states - what more could you ask for! Thank you to all the crew at Cincy Speedway and a special thank you to Skinny Ricky and Mitch Barnes for helping pull this amazing weekend together.

n the weekend of June 11th and 12th, in a small town in Southeast Oregon, up a windy gravel road on a shooting range was the destination for the AHRMA Northwest inaugural Lakeview Bullard Canyon weekend. A community came together, organized by longtime AHRMA member Dirk Williams and his extended family, to put on a new event for the region. Rob and Debbie Poole, along with Dirk Williams, set up the Redwood Engineering Trials sections; all ten sections stretched throughout the creek along the property. Saturday morning came with an overcast forecast and 26 trials competitors! The largest class of the day was the Modern Classic Intermediate with 44

10 riders. Tom Kane snatched up first place with nine points and nine cleans, second place went to Mike Houde with 15 points, 23 cleans, and a clean third loop, and in third place was Jim Herbert with 21 points and 19 cleans. Other first place finishers for the weekend include: Tom Street in the Rigid Lightweight Expert class with 116 points, but cleaning his first loop! Charlie Higdon earned 32 points in the Premier Heavyweight Intermediate class. Kelly Shane edged out Rob Poole in the Premier Heavyweight Expert class with only two points. In the Classic class, Jeff Bushey (Expert) took first with 14 points and Jeff McDevitt (Novice) earned first with 59 points. Wes AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

northwest Poole rode the Modern Classic Masters class and earned 22 points. It was close in points for the Modern Classic Experts; first place went to Bob Belliciti with 37 points and 18 cleans, Grant Menghini captured second over his brother, Craig, with 38 points and 17 cleans. Craig tied on points (38), but ultimately lost the position due to having only 15 cleans, and had to settle for third place. In the Novice class, Sam McMurry was the only one out of the three riders to complete all three loops; he earned 25 points and 20 cleans. Jenny Newell competed in the beginner class with Cy Yee; Jenny snapped up first place with six points, 28 cleans, and cleaned her last loop. There were some challenging sections and many spectators came out for the first time to watch trials. In section 5, the checkers, Pete Jorgenson and Robert Trono, made up a phrase for the riders: “stay alive, take a five.” Although humorous, their section had many challenges: a creek bed, uneven ground, and big rocks. (256). Jeff Bushey (B60) edged out Layne Hanna (15L) in the 60+ Expert class. Mike Atkins (3V) earned first in the Premier Expert class. Mike Nadeker (49) overtook Debbie Poole (70T) for the Classic Intermediates. In the Sportsman Open class Wes Poole (19X) earned first for the Experts and for the Intermediates Matthew Johnston (69M) took first. Pete Jorgenson (195) earned first for the Sportsman 200 Intermediate class; Joe Klokkevold (117) edged out Mickey Sergent (36M) for the Expert Sportsman 200. The winners for the Post-Vintage classes included: Russ Pfirrman (202) for the 200 Intermediate, Brian Larsen (37w) for the Open Expert, CJ Siege (306) for the Open Intermediate, 50+ Intermediate was Dan Dumas (8z), 60+ Expert was Stephen Newell (648), 60+ Intermediate was Robert Trono (67v), Historic Open Intermediate was Jonathan Stuart (306), Pre Modern Expert was Jim Buckalew (5T), and Women Expert was Erin Gilkison (30). The second cross country of the day had eight racers - seven of the eight had electric start bikes, with the holeshot going to Sidney Mocke (s97), the only rider that had to kick start his bike. Mocke made for a picture-perfect start by popping a wheelie. Mocke also won the race, second place went to Austin Sergent (16) in the Modern Support class.

northwest Thank you to the cross country sponsor, West Country Stables; a special thank you to Wayne Hawes and Jeff Bushey for designing the cross country course, the lap checkers, and all the volunteers. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse on Saturday evening, continuing into Sunday morning. Torrential downpour made it too dangerous for the vintage motocross to take place. After Expert racer Steve Gard (92R) was asked to test the track, Gard came back to an earlymorning rider’s meeting muddy and soaked, informing everyone that the track was too dangerous to race on. A decision was made to cancel the motocross. Although devastating news about the cancellation, it was the best decision to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
