from the editor

The feeling you get when you get on a bike is like no other. Regardless if the bike is destined for the pavement or the dirt roads, there’s a feeling of freedom, of peace and quiet. It’s been a while since I’ve swung my leg over a bike for an actual ride, and the Yamahas and Hondas in the garage stare at me every time I open the garage door. Since the weather has turned for the better, I’ve been trying to get my feet on the pegs a little bit each day, even if it’s just to ride around the yard. But make no mistake, plans are in the works to get the rubber back on the road so I can once again explore the dirt roads around my neighborhood and feel the freedom that only comes from two wheels. see you on the track!

We wanted to take a moment to clear up a misprint found in the CZECH MATE article seen in last month’s issue. In the second paragraph, the article mentions a liver transplant and could be interpreted that it was had by Henry himself. We’ve learned that it was actually Henry’s son, Jay, who had undergone this transplant and that Jay has recovered and is back to racing!! Our apologies to the Gref family for the error. Ahhh, SUMMER! Having had a great Memorial Day weekend with the completion our AHRMA Classic MotoFest at Heartland Park, the summer is in full swing now. There will be so many good times this year, and we have a great summer of activities planned. Whether it’s Muddy Creek, Reynlow, Shady Acres, Laguna Seca, Jack Pines (Sturgis), or Pavilion in NY, we have a great summer of activities planned for the VMX, PVMS, and NGMX racers. For Trials we have Lemay Museum, Laguna Seca, Jack Pine, and Pavilion. Dirt Track has Lawrenceburg, Cinci, Lodi, Laguna Seca, and Jack Pine. Road racing has New Jersey, Laguna Seca, The Ridge, Blackhawk, and Gingerman wrapping up the summer on Labor Day weekend. We are so lucky to have so may great events across the entire country. We’re also lucky to have a staff that works tirelessly to make these events happen for you, our member owners.

fun. It’s not just about the lap times, but the good times – and the memories. We are already starting to plan our 2023 event schedule. Events that do well this year will have a good chance of making the schedule next year. Let’s all get out there and support the AHRMA team as we create great events for the rest of 2022. Now, let’s race!

I have to admit…the day we set the clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time is likely my favorite day of the year. No other day offers so much promise. Good weather, good times, late light, friendships, and RACING! I wait all winter for this, and I’ll bet there are a few of you out there that feel the same way.

Now is the time to ENJOY this great sport we all love and make the most of your 2022. As we’ve waited for a full return to “normal” post covid, this is our moment. If you have been to our Spring events, stay on the gas and make this a fun year while keeping the past fast. If you haven’t been out to some of our Spring events this year, now is the time to get the maintenance done on those classic machines and head for the

dust on Friday (there were a couple of times I thought the wind was going to carry me away), Saturday and Sunday were more-calm and the overall feedback from riders was the track was fantastic. I cannot thank the AHRMA Team enough as we came into this event with a smaller staff and they worked tirelessly. I am grateful to be a part of such a fantastic group of people!

Happy June AHRMA Family!

L

et me start by saying it’s been another busy month for this Road Race Director! I traveled from the hills of Tennessee to the beautiful Colorado Rockies and then on to a land called California and back home again supporting back-toback road race events. First stop was High Plains Raceway in Deer Trail, Colorado. After what seemed like forever, we topped a hill and there she was in all her glory, the track in seemingly the middle of nowhere known as High Plains Raceway! I quickly became friends with Track Manager, Glen and after a tour, it was obvious that this facility was built with racing in mind as they had full cameras offering a great view of the track from the control room. Although we fought fierce winds and

After an exhausting weekend, our friends Ed & Evelyn Peacock, who served as AHRMA’s Trials Coordinators for years welcomed us to their home to regroup. Originally, the regroup involved Curt changing the oil, which is something we normally would have done prior to a trip, but we had to abort our original travel plan just before we left home due to an unexpected issue with our new-to-us motorhome. As Curt changed the oil, I got to work with AHRMA stuff and then he reported an issue with the van. I won’t even get into the details of this; just suffice it to say, it involved Dewanna wrenching (for those who don’t know, Curt is still recovering from a crash at Carolina Motorsports Park and was wearing a cast on his arm) and needed parts were unavailable. With that we switched to Plan C and thankfully I was able to secure a van to rent so we could continue to make our way cross country. I will note, by this time I had moved the road race equipment more times than one would enjoy! Finally, Tuesday afternoon we were on our way to Thunderhill. While Curt hunkered down for driving, I set up my office in the front seat of the van and we put in the miles.

The canyons, mountains, rail roads and the western sites were beautiful. Thursday morning, we hooked up with Jim and Terri Korn somewhere near Truckee, California and shared a drive through Donner Pass. Donner Pass is the location where AHRMA off road hosts trials events (when the snow allows) and it’s a place Curt has shared many stories of national trials and even a USA World Round over our 30+ years together. While, we didn’t get to pay a proper visit, the ride-thru with an occasional stop for a photo was certainly a highlight of this trip for me! Thursday afternoon, we arrived at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California and were greeted by a great management team. Our AHRMA Team arrived (fewer in numbers than the weekend prior) and they didn’t disappoint. Each one taking to their job and each one filling the gap wearing multiple hats as

The podium for the Formula Lightning featured from left to right Bob Berbecco, Becky Baker-Illman and Dick Illman. This was the first time that Becky and Dick have podiumed together racing AHRMA!

from the staff it was needed. I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank our members who volunteered with Tech at each event. The weather was perfect, with a little wind, offering a weekend of fun and fast bikes. I flew home Monday afternoon and arrived home late in the evening, while Curt took to the road with the rental van and road race equipment. I can’t thank him enough for transporting the rental van back to Colorado (and all that was involved with shifting the equipment between the two vehicles) and to Ed Peacock for having an alternate plan to get our van back on the road since the parts were still not available. Whew….did I say it’s been a month?!

After 30 days on the road, 7000+ miles, 6 races, and 11 states I still find myself in awe of the family that is AHRMA. regret to inform the members of AHRMA that I have decided to step down as your Off-Road Director.

I greatly enjoyed meeting a lot of you wonderful members over the last few years. The event at Devil’s Ridge was the last event that the Cameron’s held on their amazing piece of property and I couldn’t think of a better venue to be my last event as the AHRMA Off-Road Director. I hope to join you all as a racer sometime in the future. At this time, I will be stepping completely away from the program and enjoying some much-needed time with my daughter; she is growing up fast and I no longer am willing to miss out on her childhood. I wish you all a great racing season, please stay healthy, go fast, take chances. Be a blessing. I will see you again on this side or the other.

2023 RULES CHANGE UPDATE O

ur annual Rule Change Proposal submission event is rolling right along. By the time you are reading this, the Rules and Eligibility (R&E) Committees will have finished making their recommendations, and the Board may have already finished their preliminary voting. All rules, including R&E recommendations and subsequent Board decisions along with the committee recommendations and the Board’s voting record, will be compiled and presented to the membership on the AHRMA web site. Look for an announcement around June 15. Once the rules go live, members will have a four-week period in which to comment. We will be trying something new this year regarding comments. You have always been able to comment on the rules, but trying to find anyone else’s comment was difficult at best. At the bottom of each page of rules

there will be a comment section. The most important box to fill out will be the Entry ID #, which will be posted above the proposal. By using the find function (shortcuts are Command-F on a Mac, Control-F or CTRL-F on a PC) and entering the Entry ID #, you will be able to see all comments associated with the rule and be able to reply to individual comments. Commenting is important. The Board’s vote in June is preliminary. It can change in July. Don’t take for granted that you will get the result you expected. Look at the voting record, and if you have a concern how an individual Trustee voted, e-mail your concern.

ED BARGY

WORKSHOP WORDS: ED BARGY PHOTOS PROVIDED BY: ED BARGY

S

ome of our readers may have already heard of the new “Advanced Riding Technique Workshop.” Here are some more details about this offering. It is co-hosted by AHRMA and Ed Bargy. The workshop is open to both new, inexperienced track riders and experienced licensed racers. This is not a race licensing class, it concentrates on the high performance techniques to be successful on the racetrack. The class starts out relearning some of the basics of motorcycle dynamics and then continues to apply them to more advanced motorcycle techniques. We start out with the simple subjects and work up to the more advanced as the days progresses. There is plenty of time for Q&As. Don’t be afraid to ask! After each classroom session students will have track time to work on and try out the techniques just covered. Students are encouraged to work on each topic after each class. For example, if the class was “Advanced Lines,” don’t come out and work on your body position. Also, this is not a day to work on your personal best lap times. It is a day to learn and improve techniques, techniques, techniques. All of the techniques and theories come from decades of firsthand experience plus trial and error, to find the best techniques. Over the years, I have found what works, what sort of works, what you can “get away with,” and what doesn’t work at all. These are also supported by recognized and long established laws of physics and engineering principles. Not just from what “Sounds Logical.”

The curriculum encompasses techniques, M/C dynamics of motion, how to interpret the feedback from the bike, and how they apply to the following, • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Basic and alternate race lines (simple turns, complex turns, small bikes vs large bikes) Using visual reference/action points Dynamics of leaning & steering Avoiding target fixation Avoiding panic Developing aggressive late braking techniques How to improve entry speed True application of trail braking The science and techniques of aggressive Body Position The effect of body position on tire contact patch and traction Selecting the proper overall gearing Proper gear selection for cornering Throttle control How to achieve smooth upshifts and down shifts Reducing false neutrals How to react to a false neutral, without crashing Plus, other topics

Students receive a copy of my book “Encyclopedia of High Performance Riding Techniques.” Sign-up for the Workshop will be on-line, through AHRMA and MSR.

ABOUT ED BARGY Ed’s winning started back in 1957 when he trophied in local hydroplane races, at age 11, plus winning drag racing event in the mid-sixties. Ed’s motorcycle teaching experience dates back to 1968 while racing motorcycles in England. He has put hundreds, if not thousands, of graduates on the podium. Ed’s vast range of racing experiences plus his formal training in science, physics, engineering, and mechanical technology, allows him to have a great understanding of all the riding techniques and dynamics behind them. This gives him the ability to clearly teach and explain, in-depth, all the techniques and the science of them to students from a variety of backgrounds. JUNE 2022

MILE-HIGH FUN AT

HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY

WORDS: ANDERS CARLSON PHOTOS: RUPERT BERRINGTON ACTION PHOTOGRAPHY 2022 Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Cup Roadracing Series - April 22nd-24th, 2022 High Plains Raceway; Deer Trail, CO Notwithstanding fancy types with electronic fuel injection, High Plains Raceway greeted racers with windy and dusty weather and a lengthy to-do list as far as carb settings and wind mitigation. Assuming everybody nailed these tests, most AHRMA members took to this gently rolling 2.55-mile course for the first time. With uninterrupted sightlines (but blind corners) or anything to slow the wind, AHRMA racers spent the weekend perfecting their thousandyard stares and hurtling towards grassy vistas along slowly warming pavement. A warm Friday gave way to a chilly Saturday, which repeated itself on Sunday. Racers had their work cut out for them. Sidecars kicked things off both days. Or rather, sidecar, as in a field of one. Brett Leveque and Brian Dobrowolski may have had the track to themselves, but they took the opportunity to turn in a fine 2:10.579 lap time.

John Beldock (660), Patrick Lansu (77L), Brian Dobrowolski (41D), Dennis Stowers (151)

Rodney Mattison (269)

In a field of three, Jesse Davis took the Battle of Twins 1 honors on Saturday, but settled for 2nd on Sunday. Jonathan Glaefke avenged his Saturday 2nd spot, with Brian Larrabure picking up final wood on both days. Jeff Nelson in Next Gen Superbike 3 came within sight (less than 2 seconds off) of the twins on Saturday. But being the lone entrant in his class, took 1st both days regardless.

within a second. Dennis Stowers eked out a Saturday win, while Brian Dobrowolski took Sunday’s best spot. Dylan Connor in Battle of Twins 2 hung with Formula Thunder riders with a Saturday best lap time of 2:13.041. Jesse Davis, aboard his 1982 Yamaha XV920, dominated the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight Vintage Cup while Ralph Staropoli took Saturday’s

Sound of Singles 2 race, allowing Geoff Cesmat avenge Saturday’s 2nd place with a 1st on Sunday. Mark Morrow nipped Dave Roper by .144 seconds on Saturday’s Formula 500 contest, but had to concede Sunday’s race back to Roper. In addition to 1st place, Roper’s consolation prize included a 10 second margin of Sunday victory. Lap times got smaller as the race wore

Motards, being Motards, kept things close and interesting on Saturday. Steve Alexander bested Geoff Cesmat by .30 seconds for 1st place on Sunday, which made up for Cesmat beating Alexander by 1.9 seconds on Saturday. Robert Oliva took the Sound of Singles 1 trophy on Saturday and Sunday aboard his new Kramer EVO2 S, while the ageless Dave Roper took top honors in 500 Premier on both days. Cameron Crockett ran away with Next Gen Superbike Middleweight both days as well, but improved by 5 seconds, besting Roper in the unofficial 500 PremierNext Gen Middleweight battle. on, a testament to their competitive nature. Jeff Nelson collected familiar honors with dual trophies for both days’ wins in Next Gen Superbike 2, with Jim Barker and Brian Larrabure swapping 2nd and 3rd places in Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Ralph Staropoli took the win on Saturday, but chose to navigate the mountain roads to his house instead of participating Sundayin the Sound of Singles 3, Dave Frick snatched 1st place in Sunday’s contest. Lone Formula 250 entrant Tom Johnson took both 1st and last place and anything in between as he improved his best lap by 2 seconds (2:47.624) between Saturday and Sunday’s race.

Brett Leveque and Brian Dobrowolski (285)

An impressive total of 10 classes crowded into Saturday’s Race 6. Take a deep breath and read on. Jeremy Maddrill outlasted Jesse in Formula Vintage, Bruce Sass took the lone spot in Vintage Superbike Lightweight with Kye Boclair winning the Middleweight affair. Sam Weidel won out in Sound of Thunder 4, John Scales beat all in 250 GP, Shawn Gilmore snatched Novice Production Heavyweight honors, James Korn

was the class of 350 GP, Ralph Wessell won his usual Pre-1940 class, Seroj Terian won the Thruxton Cup Challenge and lastly, Allen Siekman saw checkers and a trophy in 200 GP. Sunday’s contest flip-flopped a few results. Jesse Davis won top wood in Formula Vintage as Matthew Winiarski made up for Saturday’s fortunes by beating James Korn in 350 GP.

Saturday, but conceded Sunday’s race to Cameron Crockett, whose lone lap netted him a technical 1st place. Sound of Thunder 3 featured a dominant win on Saturday by Ricky Orlando, who then missed Sunday’s start, yielding victory to Drew Jankord. Brian Larrabure and Jim Barker swapped spots in Next Gen Superbike, with wins (and 2nd places) in Saturday and Sunday’s races, respectively. Bruce Sass took top honors in Sportsman 750 on Saturday, but couldn’t complete Sunday’s contest. So Cameron Crockett happily took top spot on Sunday’s podium.

A monster class of 22 riders in Sound of Thunder 2 filled the entire grid for Race 7, aided by Colorado’s own MRA, or Motorcycle Roadracing Association. They got to see Brian Dobrowolski put on a clinic both days, taking two 1st places. On Sunday, John Beldock trimmed Dobrowolski’s margin of victory from 13 seconds down to 4 seconds. Nicely done. The usual CB160 swarm must have been scared off by wide open spaces, as a class of just two took to the Colorado steppe. Allen Siekman took both contests, with Richard Illman in hot pursuit. The familiar John Scales took both Formula 125 races, Rick Armstrong took the lone Novice Production Lightweight spot both days, Grant Spence likewise took solo honors in Class C Footshift with Ralph Wessell winning out in Handshift.

Staropoli in Sunday’s race, as he took 11 seconds off his toal time. Bob Berbeco survived Saturday’s Formula Lightning race by a mere 1.888 seconds, then followed it up by eking out a .753 margin of victory on Sunday, both over Richard Illman. Randy Sullinger took the win in Next Gen Superbike Lightweight on

To the riders (and motorcycles) that survived the mile-high altitude, a big congrats! Hopefully the high winds added to the feeling of speed. Speaking of which, a big shout out goes to race school students who braved 30 mph winds to begin their budding racing career. According to race instructor Mark Morrow, gusts peaked at 40-50 mph at times, with riders at a 15º lean just powering down the straights. Included in this class was Arch York’s son Sam. 811 Underground Team Racing team is growing and York is excited his younger son is joining the fray, ”Nothing is cooler than watching both of my boys on track at the same time.” As anyone who’s taken the race school at challenging places like Grattan can tell you, it all gets a little easier next time out. And fun.

Jesse Davis (03)

Saturday’s Sound of Thunder 1 saw Jeremiah Walker beat the next three riders by less than 2 seconds, with Brian Dobrowolski taking Sunday’s contest by a convincing 11 second margin. Thunderhill Raceway Park near Willows, CA. April 29 through May 1. The track, developed by the Sports Car Club of America in the early 90s, is located in rolling hills approximately 90 miles north of Sacramento. AHRMA first visited the track for an event during 2004 promoted by a group of San Francisco Bay Area AHRMA members and friends. 18 years later, the three-mile, 15-turn “east” track is still a perfect venue for all of AHRMA’s road racing classes.

Kawasaki Z1R completed the podium. While there were just single entries in all five of the Sidecar classes, inter-class races resulted in a good show. Bernard Juchli and passenger Kevin Kautzky grabbed the holeshot and vanished both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the team of Boyd and Lindauer aboard their Modern Sidecar US F2 rig diced a bit with the Kaechele and Vaden duo aboard their Formula Classic combo.

On Sunday the Boyd/Lindauer team closed to within a second of Juchli and Kautzky. A contingent from Washington state, the birthplace of Honda CB 160 racing, were among the 10 racers gridded for the Honda CB160 exhibition race during Saturday’s Race 3. Among them was Tim Fowler, the “Fowler Formula” namesake still campaigning a lightly-tuned Honda CB160 he has raced for decades.

The long straights and sweepers are punctuated by several technically challenging blind or off-camber turns. The signature Turn 5 “Cyclone” is similar to entering Laguna Seca’s famed “Corkscrew.” The combination of fast and slow sections meant that gobs of horsepower, or razor-sharp handling alone would not guarantee victory. To win at Thunderhill, bikes and racers needed a bit of both. Saturday and Sunday both started with Curtis Adams dominating the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class, which is also AHRMA’s 2022 Vintage Cup class, on his 1981 Honda CB 750F. On Saturday, Damian Doffo held off Matthew Winter by less than a second to take the checkers with Tim O’Mahoney, a strong proponent and supporter of 160 racing in the Pacific Northwest completing the podium. On Sunday, the grided swelled to a dozen starters and Winter struck back for victory over Doffo. In Formula 125, Dustin Johnson’s trick Hondaframed, bespoke Kawasaki-powered weapon didn’t make the start on Saturday but he did win on Sunday. A quartet of classes were on the track during Race 4 on Saturday. BJ Bohrer took the holeshot in Sound of Thunder 3 yet ended up dicing with Michael Jarrard. John Beldock had a great start in Race 5, but Ladja Sucik was able to track him down for a win in the crowded Sound of Thunder 2 class on Saturday. Beldock did his homework Saturday night and came back for the win on Sunday. Peter LeDuc put in an inspiring ride on his 1999 Yamaha TZ250 coming from eighth on the grid to take third. Race 5 had lots of inter-class competition. Shawn Woolery, also aboard a TZ250 in the SoT2 class, diced with Paolo Cividino which may have inspired him to take third in Next Generation Superbike Lightweight. Norbert Katona was the sole competitor in Sound of Singles 1 yet still found a battle with another thumper as he diced with AJ Gubser in the Motard class. Sunday’s Race 5 was a three-lap sprint with Beldock winning, Sucik second, and Kenyon Kluge, aboard an electric-powered motorcycle, third. Matthew Winter brought his winning skills to Saturday’s Race 6. Rod Skaggs nailed the holeshot but it was

similar and different: Kevin Hipp’s winning margin in Sportsman 500 increased to 12 seconds and 15 seconds in Sportsman 350. The resurgence of purpose-built, twostroke Gran Prix motorcycles was on full display during Race 9 in Sound of Singles 3. Jonathan Schendel dominated Saturday’s race aboard a Honda RS125 winning by more than 30 seconds. Damian Doffo, who had won Sound of Singles 2 earlier in the day on a KTM 390 took second with Stephen Gillen also on an RS125 completing the podium. Just off the podium was Lorraine Crussell on a Yamaha TZ125 with Kurt Hipp rounding out the top five on his KTM 390. On Sunday, Schendel, and Doffo repeated. Gillen’s clutch basket failed early in the race promoting Crussell into third. Craig Grantham, AHRMA’s new Executive Director, was second in Next Generation Superbike 2 behind Dan Wilson. On Sunday, Grantham won and Brian Larrabure, chair of the AHRMA Board of Directors, was second.

Winter who ultimately left the rest of the 250 GP field behind. Damian Doffo followed suit riding to a lonely second. Tim Fowler made Neil Jensen work hard for the final step on the podium. On Sunday, Dustin Johnson rode his Honda/Kawasaki combo to victory with Tim Fowler, on his classic Honda CB160 racer taking second over Rod Skaggs after a lastlap drag race. The Race 7 grid on Saturday was filled with local and out-of-town fast movers, some with international racing experience. John Beldock applied his holeshot skills to the Formula Thunder class but wasn’t able to make the podium. Thomas Montano, an Isle of Mann TT veteran, started from the third row and worked his way onto the third step of podium via a last-lap duel on the front straight with race winner Dan Wilson while Steve Metz was in the mix and took second. On Sunday, with the race shortened to three laps, Metz took victory over Montano. Other notable IoM TT vets on the track were David Roper and David Crussell. Roper rode to victory in 500 Premier while Crussell won the Formula Vintage race Saturday and Sunday.

The Hipp racing dynasty made an appearance during Saturday’s Race 8 in the Sportsman 500 class. Kevin Hipp bested his father, Stephen, by less than a quarter of a second. Sunday’s race was shortened to four laps and that’s all Dustin Johnson needed to top Doffo by more than four seconds while Tim O’Mahony was third. A red flag marred Race 11 on Saturday. During the resulting five-lap event, Steve Metz and Dan Wilson went at each other with Metz

taking the win by less than a second. Montano, who had diced with Metz prior to the red flag, took third in the restarted race. On Sunday, Montano would win. Nine racers gridded up for Open Two-Stroke and Vince Rolleri took the win with David Crussell, aboard a Yamaha TZ750 second and Sergio Morales Galvan on a Yamaha TZ250 third. Jonathan Schendel, on an RS125 was just off the podium and able to best his pit mates Peter LeDuc and Shawn Woolery, both on TZ250s. Rolleri, Crussell and Galvan would repeat on Sunday.

Saturday and Sunday’s final race was the West Coast introduction of a new road racing class which brought some new faces into the AHRMA family. Lisa Kinberger, an experienced racer with the American Federation of Motorcyclists aboard a Yamaha R3, topped AHRMAs new Sound of Thunder class by more than 10 seconds. Paolo Cividino, another AHRMA newcomer took second while Stephen Gillen, who has raced in vintage and modern classes with AHRMA for years, took third on his Ninja 300. Sunday’s podium was identical. The 350GP race was full of AHRMA regulars. On Saturday, David Roper stormed away from Walt Fulton, both on Aermacchis, while Ducati-mounted Matthew Winiarski was third and AHRMA official James Korn fourth on his Kawasaki. On Sunday, Fulton rebounded to beat Roper by less than a second.

he 2022 Vintage Cup class sponsored by RoadracingWorld.com, featuring Vintage Superbike Heavyweight, kicked off both days of racing at Thunderhill Raceway Park, in Willows, CA. Curtis Adams, from Riverside, California, won both races on a 1981 Honda CB 750F. Adams and Jesse Davis, of Long Beach, California, both entered the weekend with 2000 points. Current Vintage Cup Class leader, Jeremy Maddrill of Stiger, Illinois did not make this west coast event, thus presenting an opportunity for valuable points to be earned. A shoot-out between Adams and Davis was expected, but unfortunately for Davis, he high sided in turn five and his weekend ended early.

Adams put his head down and put in the laps. While challenged by Darrin Gauvin of Camarillo, California aboard his 1981 Honda CB900F, Adams was not to be overtaken as his lap times consistently improved and landed him with double-points and a jump to second place overall in this series. “I worked control for this event and the corner workers could not say enough about this class as Adams laid down consistent laps. It is truly the sound of music each time they take to the track. I look forward to watching as the remainder of the season unfolds,” stated Dewanna Comer, AHRMA’s Road Race Director. The 2022 Vintage Cup Trophy will be awarded to the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class

winner at select events including Heartland Park Motorsports Park, New Jersey Motorsports Park, Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, Ridge Motorsports Park, and Barber Motorsports Park. or the past two seasons, the opening round of AHRMA’s Mid-Atlantic Cross-Country season took place at the familiar Rocket Raceway location outside of rural Three Springs, PA. However, just prior to the kickoff of the 2020 season, the adjacent motocross property had been sold to another operating group, which forced the vintage crew to a less accommodating, but still workable, alternative parking area. And as the surrounding woodland that housed the majority of the established trails remained in property owner Mark Carlson’s name, the AHRMA bunch continued the legacy of using the Rocket Raceway name while the motocross area took on an alphanumeric moniker. Fast forward to the present, and we find that the 26

MX track has once again changed hands and reverted to calling itself Rocket Raceway, which just “sounds right.” The new ownership was gracious enough to cooperate with Mark and series’ coordinator Dave Kutskel for the race weekend and allow a record number of competitors to return to the spacious, flat, parking area from years past as well as use some of the trails that lie on the MX property that were off limits the past couple seasons. Many thanks to the owners of Rocket Raceway for the accommodations! The Mid-Atlantic group has been using this facility for many years and curated a fine batch of possible course layouts. The 2022 course was typical Rocket, with a tremendous variety of terrain and elevation, AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

plenty of entertaining single track, roots, and rocks, and enough open or two-track mileage to sneak past the bike in front of you. With the series’ trail boss extraordinaire Mike Zdybak on the shelf learning to harness the powers of his new bionic shoulder, Brock Kutskel stepped in to handle a lot of the burden of clearing the winter’s leftover downed trees and ensure a clear path. A good amount of consideration was given to avoiding areas that tend to become bottlenecks due to water and mud, which is important considering the recent history here. You see, while springtime weather in general is a gamble, if you had to spin a roulette wheel of “wet” or “dry”, I’d bet it all on “wet” when it comes to spring at Rocket. Of course, this year held true to fashion with a week full of JUNE 2022

mid-atlantic rain leading up to the first green flag of the year. But the careful layout selections paid off, and with just enough clear skies in the hours preceding, the course was far better than expected. Certainly, there were spots where water had to be crossed and the inevitable mud and ruts formed. In general, traffic was able to move through without too much drama. Awesome, competitive racing ensued…despite the frigid temperatures and occasional snow squall (told you the weather is a gamble!).

RACES: VINTAGE The future of the sport of vintage off-road racing was on display in the morning’s race. Not long ago the duo of Logan Holley and Brock Kutskel would have been making tracks in the youth racing scene held in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic’s efforts, but the two have now begun to make some noise on the big stage. Logan set the pace early and didn’t look back as he pulled away for the overall and AA class win. Brock made a last lap pass on Brett Reichart to take the runner-up position and the class win in the Vintage 200 Expert ranks. Darrell Wassil followed Brock

in third overall while Brett held on for fourth. Jacob Williams took the second spot in the Vintage 200 Expert class behind Kutskel and was also solidly in the top-ten overall. Daniel Zell held the early lead on his Suzuki in Vintage 200 Intermediate action but was unable to hold off the charging BS Holley who took over the top spot on lap two and eventually take the checkers with Zell behind. Kyle Warner returned to his winning ways in the Vintage 100 Expert class on his screaming Yamaha

while his brother Larry took a hard run at the top spot in Vintage 50+ Expert. Larry’s Yamaha fell a minute short of catching winner Joe Cole’s Husqvarna. Greg Barratt rounded out the podium on his Maico. Jim Laird was number one in Vintage 50+ Intermediate on his newly acquired MX250 with Tim Spigelmyer hounding him all race. Tim fell just twelve seconds short of the top spot as he and Ed Weger went 2-3 respectively.

RACES: POST VINTAGE Fresh of the win in the first race, Logan Holley was about to get a lesson in speed from arguably the fastest guy in the series. John Ashcraft took charge of race two and pulled a five-minute lead on fellow fast guy Mike Blackwell for the top two spots overall. Logan hung tight to Mike for third with their pair of ITs only seconds apart. Craig Shenigo took charge of a competitive Post Vintage 50+ Expert pack with a win over Jon Brant. Joe Cole filled out the top three on the only nonYamaha IT in the class. Darrell Wassil and Geoff Kemp went 2-3 in Post Vintage 200 Expert behind Holley while another youngster with emerging speed took the Post Vintage 200 Intermediate win when Joey Spayd II made a late race pass for the lead on his XR200R in a tight ten-rider class. John Brunnett had no intentions of turning over the Post Vintage +60 Expert class win with a wire-to-wire performance on his SWM. Jack Petrilla and John Zellam diced for the runner-up spot all race with Jack topping John at the finish. Eleven riders took the green flag in Post Vintage +60 Intermediate action with Yamaha pilot Doug Kurz besting the Can-Am duo of Tommy Tippett and 2021 class champion Glenn Hershey. Robert Radcliffe took home the top trophy in the Novice +60 class.

mid-atlantic RACES: DISC BRAKE After being introduced in 2021, the third race on the schedule has continued to grow. The series has made an additional investment in 2022 by adding several age classes to the event to increase participation. With 43 bikes on the line for race three, the efforts have proven worthwhile! Brett Reichart flirted with the lead on lap one, but John Ashcraft was merely one second behind at the first pass through scoring. John made the pass soon thereafter and took the win while Ethan Waddell hustled his YZ250 to keep him in sight for the second spot in the overall results and AA class. Brett and his KX250 held on for a hard-fought top-ten finish in the overall ranks. Sean McKinney survived a last race push by Grant Reichart in the PreModern Open Expert class, but Sean was able to clear Grant’s KDX by less than ten seconds at the checkers for the win. Kelly Ashcraft took the Pre-2K Women’s Expert class in her debut in the third race on a KTM. Twelve riders entered the various age class in the disc brake race with Craig Lowery setting the pace with a 50+ Intermediate win and top-15 overall. Other winners in the age classes include Dave Kutskel over Steve Sachetti (+50 Expert), Brad Waddell over Jack Petrilla (+60 Expert), and

Tommy Tippett on an ATK over Doug Kurz (+60 Intermediate). Interestingly, Kurz competed on what appeared to be a hybrid steel tank Yamaha TT with custom modern suspension. Rocket Raceway never disappoints in delivering a great experience to kickoff a fresh season of fun in the Mid-Atlantic. There’s lots more fun to come in the 2022 season with several full weekend events, an entirely new venue in late summer, and a revamped Mid-Atlantic motocross series that will be a companion to the cross-country schedule for most of its dates presenting even more opportunity to race vintage motorcycles and hang around some truly great people. Thank you to Rocket Raceway, Mark Carlson, and the AHRMA Mid-Atlantic volunteers under the tutelage of Mr. Kutskel for making this possible. Please continue to support the sponsors that make the effort to ensure the success of this great series: Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Grove Printing, KMI Printing, Horizon Homes, and Works Enduro Riders. event, the enthusiasm and turnout would be strong. This spring meeting of regions in Central Pennsylvania has become somewhat of a tradition and has historically been the most attended event of each region’s season. 2022 was certainly no exception as the two-day event drew nearly 200 entries for both Saturday’s cross country (CC) event and for Sunday’s motocross (MX) session. Several elements are in play to contribute to the buzz surrounding the weekend, not the least of which is the fact that the event serves as the season opener for the Northeast’s CC and MX season, and the debut of the new for ’22 Mid-Atlantic MX series that is set to run concurrently with the CC schedule at several stops this season. Also, as each region tends to develop their own “stars”, the co-sponsored event is a unique opportunity to see them take the green flag on the same row. Who wouldn’t want to see a JUNE 2022

showdown between Darrell Wassil and John Ashcraft? Of course, a great event benefits from a great venue, and this year brought both disciplines back to the legacy home of the early-season joint event at Irish Valley Motocross Park. Although the MX series was able to return here after a one-year hiatus in 2020, the CC series had been absent for two full seasons. It did not take long for participants to remember what draws the series to this locale. The parking area is ample, flat, and easily accommodates the large crowd and all its various campers, trailers, rigs, and social gatherings. The facility is in a picturesque agricultural valley adjacent to the historical coal fields of Shamokin. Approaching the location from the east, Irish Valley Road leads through a narrow stone arched tunnel. Emerging on the other side, the track and road’s namesake “Irish Valley” lies before you. The landscape presents as if you’ve entered a long-forgotten secret place with dilapidated but aweinspiringly intricate displays of eclectic agricultural architecture. As you travel further west, the secluded valley widens, showing the fertile land within. Irish Valley Motocross Park is just ahead sprawled across the valley and touching the wooded foothills of the boundary mountains to the north. From the pit area, the motocross course dominates the scene, but hidden in the adjacent woods and hillside the facility holds a plethora of established trails that are assembled into a wonderful cross-country course. Dan Horengic and his team of helpers have been working this event for a long time and do a tremendous job curating and connecting the various portions of available trail to create a competitive, challenging, and entertaining course. The starting area is easily accessed on the broad front straight of the MX course adjacent to the pits. Racers taking the green flag for Saturday’s CC races negotiate two 180-degree turns before descending into the valley beyond. The singletrack trails that crisscross the MX track in an up-down series of offcamber turns and tricky root snarls could make-or-break the first lap depending on traffic filtering through this early bottleneck. The course then crossed one of the low points on the JUNE 2022

property that remains perpetually moist despite a lack of significant rain leading up to the event. While this area was without a doubt a “mudhole” with a variety of deep ruts, momentum and a solid bottom prevented folks from becoming outright stuck, although there was some definite paddling and crossrutting action in this area. A quick graceful single-track section is followed by several straightaways that skirt the adjacent field and provide a necessary route to connect the course to the wooded hillside at the far northwest corner of the property. The longest was enough to run out of gears or guts before reaching the entry to the woods beyond. Once within the confines of the trees again, the course is laid out in an excellent flow of single-track replete with the roots and rocks one associates with this region of PA. As the races wore on throughout the day, the berms wore in nicely and flow factor increased. The morning’s vintage racers were confronted with quite a challenge half-way through these woods as leaf cover made two abrupt uphill right-hand

turns appear simple enough, but once a few bikes went through, the uncovered rocks and lack of run-up created some very difficult off camber climbs that slowed many a rider. Thankfully there was a generous group of course workers positioned here to assist, and they were quite busy! This section was bypassed for later races and made the section far more approachable and enjoyable. A considerable amount of mileage is covered in the hillside woods before the course again makes its way through a short, wet area that degraded to the point that another re-route was instituted for race three. The subsequent series of switchback straights through a stand of small trees was a great opportunity to keep track of the competition ahead and behind as well as providing passing opportunities after the tight section prior. This area was a nice reprieve as it was devoid of rocks, no doubt due to generations of rock-picking farmers charged with keeping these fields productive. A quick blast through a portion of MX track brings the pack to the scoring tent and back through the starting area. Apart from the difficult vintage race section, the five-mile course was incredible, and

that opinion was echoed by many in the pits afterward. Kudos to Dan and his team for the efforts to reroute as needed to keep the course in good condition and bikes moving forward. Sunday’s crowd changed slightly as an MX only contingent converged on the scene, but the carryover participation form the CC races was quite significant especially with the advent of the Mid-Atlantic’s MX series pairing up with the Northeast’s established crew. The collection of race directors were confronted with uncooperative software used to schedule and score the MX races which caused a bit of delay in kicking off the day’s event. After some lessons learned and growing pains in getting the software in place for the first time, along with some profuse apologies from the team, the schedule was set with a whopping eleven races required to accommodate the volume of competitors anxious to hit the track. Some races even filled two gates per race! Following the slow start, the entire operational crew pulled together and executed with efficiency the remainder of the day. The starting gate team and scoring/flagging team

moved motos on and off the track with aplomb while some exquisite bullhorn work by Jamie Reitz kept the pits informed and gates full. The only unfortunate delay occurred when a fluke brake failure sent octogenarian Charlie Light careening off the course. The ambulance team was quickly on the scene and got Charlie the attention he needed at the local hospital while the race held tight until another ambulance was on the scene. Thankfully, although his impact with a tree caused some upper torso fractures, the word is that Charlie will be out of action for a while but is expected to make a full recovery. The rubber band starting gate for the MX circuit resides at the same place as Saturday’s CC race. Although running in the opposite direction, the starts are directly in the line of sight for most spectators lining the fence. The course in general moves from the upper flat by the pits downhill into the valley below and continues to alternate up and down the adjacent hillside with several areas outside the spectator’s view. Then suddenly the pack erupts from the lower portion of the track with a bit of vintage friendly airtime courtesy of the elevation transition. Overall, the track is vintage friendly with most jumps a JUNE 2022

manageable affair and whoops born from nature rather than man-made monstrosities. The series of three tabletops on the tail end of a lap leading to the finish line were crowd favorites in the post vintage and nextgen classes, but smartly excluded from any vintage action. The track flows wonderfully and the up and down nature of the terrain provides variety and is quite enjoyable. The turns are wide and sweeping with ample berms to rail or tuck inside for a pass. Portions of the track that are reachable by the water truck were watered as needed, while those areas unreachable did get a bit dusty. But to be fair, this is not a heavily manicured nor groomed facility, rather a welcoming, laid-back venue perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the AHRMA regional scene. So, how did the showdown between Darrell Wassil and John Ashcraft play out? The Northeast’s Darrell took his Ossa to the overall win in Saturday’s vintage race in a close battle with another Mid-Atlantic hotshot Logan Holley. The Mid-Atlantic’s John took both the Post Vintage and Disc Brake cross-country overall wins although Logan had the early lead in both. Darrell captured third overall, and the Post Vintage 200 Expert win, in the AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

post vintage event behind Logan. Both men showed dominance again on Sunday by taking the overall win in multiple classes each. ack by popular demand after a two-year hiatus, Crooked River Ranch invited the AHRMA Northwest community back for an adventurous weekend in the high desert of Oregon! Upon arrival, the sun was shining, the wind was brisk, and the black clouds were moving in. Rain decided to pour all night and into the morning. Saturday morning was met with consistent rain, with the once dry sand turning to quicksand in places; towards the halfway point, the sun came out, and tumbleweeds were even found blowing down the road. But the air was still brisk for the 39 competitors in the Redwood Engineering Trials competition. Riders faced ever-changing terrain as the weather conditions led to new challenges after each loop, fighting for traction in several of the sections. Todd Stanley had the fewest points of the day in the Premier Lightweight class, earning a mere eight points in all. In the second loop, he dabbed once in section 10 around the first corner. Unfortunately, he was in 34

section 10 on his final loop of the day, went around the corner and faceplanted in the dirt, earning himself the maximum score of five points! When asked what his favorite part of the weekend was, he said “Seeing all our friends and the spectators. The trials was enjoyable. Crooked River is probably my favorite place to ride.” Stanley, sponsored by Northwest Trials Concepts and Metal Restro, successfully took first place in the Premier Lightweight Expert class on his self-built 1964 Greeves Scottish. Nice work, Todd! Modern Classics was the largest class of the weekend. The Masters line had two riders: James Bodkin (36 points) edged out Scott Fisher (42 points). In the Expert line, Gary Gronow earned 25 points and was happy to be back on a vintage trials bike after being in Canada for the past two years during the quarantine; he said it was great to see his friends again. Stephen Newell finished all three loops in record time and scored 57 points. The Intermediate line had 12 riders; Sidney Mocke won the class with only 11 points, second AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

place went to Ron Sandusky with a total of 13 points. Third place came down to a three-way tie between Kevin Newins, Mike Houde, and Vint Whitman, who each earned 15 points; ultimately, Newins was awarded the final spot on the podium for having a greater number of clean sections (24 in total). Sunday, the Motion Pro Vintage Motocross kept moving without a hitch; 114 racers in 11 motos finished in approximately four hours. The track was watered periodically throughout the day keeping the dust down and the mud roosting. Racers experienced off-camber turns, long straightaways, and a few jumps. The first race of the day featured the 50+ Experts and Intermediates as well as the Sportsman 125 Experts and Intermediates. Mark Audiffred (22a) roosted into the holeshot with a slight wheelie, leaving his competition with dirt and smoke behind. Sidney Mockey (s97) snatched first place in both motos for the Vintage 50+ Intermediate, Brandon Kentner (1) earned first for the Sportsman 125 JUNE 2022

First turn in Section 10 proved a challenge for Line 1 and Line 2 riders.

Expert class, and David Rife (R24) captured first in both motos for the Sportsman 125 Intermediate class. Race two was the largest of the day, with 17 racers taking to the starting line. First place for the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class went to Charles Haines (35H) with a 2-1 finish; despite a 1-2 finish, Norm Wright (90N) earned second overall, with third-place finisher Allen Niehues (206Y) going 4-5.

Russ Pfirrman smoking and roosting in the quick sand of section 7.

The Vintage 60+ Expert and the Classic 250 Expert classes competed in Race 3. Randy McCallister (6) swept the competition winning both motos on his Maico. Russ Hoehn (31N) took second followed by Layne Hanna (15L) with a third-place finish. There were several classes showcased in race four. The race was led off the gate by Jim Row (41R). The Vintage 40+ Expert class had three fast racers: Jim Row (41r) taking the win in both motos and the overall, France’s Yannick Crocg (92r) would see second place on a bike borrowed from Steve Gard, with third place going to Mark Amaro (r96) on a Husky. Yannick Crocg came out to the United States to race at the CZ World Championships in Marysville, CA the week prior; with the racing bug still strong, Crocg came to Crooked River. Other racers were very kind to allow him to race their bikes! The Novices took to the track next; Jennifer Newell (17X) on her Yamaha earned first place in the Vintage Women’s Novice class. The Vintage 60+ Novice class had three racers; Danny Fogerty (14N) led the other racers and won the class followed by Richard Bryant (54X) and Cy Yee (256). Heading into the first corner of Race 6, Mark Baer (67U) led the tight pack. The first-place finishers for this race all snatched first in both motos; the winners included Butch Walsh (65E) in the Vintage 70+ Expert class, Allen Nichols (206Y) for the Vintage 70+ Intermediates, Chris Bradford (9B) in the Early Sportsman Stock 250 Expert class, and David Stanton (710) in the Early Sportsman Stock 250 class Intermediate.

northwest Novice and Women’s classes were showcased in Race 7. The Vintage Women’s Intermediate class put on a show between Ellen Voermans (7X), who had returned from injury and was back on a bike thanks to the Newell Family) and Christina Claassen (2y), an experienced rider in her own right, but new to AHRMA. Claassen edged out Voermans for the win in both motos. Arei James snatched the holeshot from the rest of the racers in the Vintage Open Age and 100cc competition in Race 9. This race saw some intense roosting and passing; in the second lap, George Amaro (92Q) weaved in-between Juniper bushes to pass Arei James and Scott Fisher, making for exciting racing between the winners of their classes. Race ten featured the Sportsman 500, Early Sportsman Stock 500, and Classic 500 classes. The race was led by the winner of the Early Sportsman Stock 500 Expert class, Brandon Kentner (7X); Kentner swept the competition and went hard into every corner as he got sideways, even roosting himself at times! For the Sportsman 500 Intermediate class, Sidney Mocke (S97) edged out Fritz Guenther (03), and Arei James (5R) to take the win. Jeff Mullins (4X) (Expert) and Clay Light (9W) (Intermediate) took first for the Early Sportsman Stock 500. Sean Fromhold (66F) won both motos in the Classic 500 Intermediate over Jason Koschnitzke (06V) and Russ Pfirrman (202) Thank you to all of the Crooked River Ranch community for hosting such an amazing event and making everyone feel so welcome.

BATTLE IN BATON ROUGE 2022 4SR/JEMCO AHRMA National Vintage Dirt Track Series - April 9th, 2022 Baton Rouge Raceway; Baton Rouge, LA - 3/8 mile WORDS: RICHARD BRODOCK PHOTOS: MORGAN CAMPBELL

T

he sun slowly rises as the racers start pulling into Baton Rouge Raceway. Riders from as far away as South Carolina and Oklahoma prepare for this 3/8’s mile clay track. They gather for fun, for family, for the sport, and this night to honor for this is the 4th annual Mike Gerald Classic. Baton Rouge Native Mike Gerald made a name for himself winning 5 national championships while dominating the sport in the late 1960s and well into the 1970s. Stepping back in time we start with the the Dinosaur class with pre 1951 brakless machines. Preston Palmer would give him a good run for it but ultimately Beno Rodi would take the win. Along side them in the race Jeff Durand and Gary Moore would fight it out down the line with Durand victorious over Moore. The quickly growing class of Brakeless Lightweight featuring machines 1968 and earlier up to 300cc had a good showing with new to the class riders of Buck Cunningham and Richard Brodock. The ever fast Henry Sansing would take the win on his Ossa while Gary Moore and Richard Brodock would run nose to tail the entire Isaiah Lopez (9)

race with Moore and his Harley Sprint taking second over Brodock and his Yamaha DT1. Another rapidly growing class, Sportsman 125 had another great battle with JL Reas and brothers David and Robert Mustin. A mechanical would sideline Preston Palmer who normally would be there right in the mix. If you want to watch one of the best displays of competition you don’t want to miss a pack of pre 1974 125cc machines going wide open for 8 laps on a 3/8 mile track. Or better yet find an old 125cc bike and join them. With not an inch to spare you’ll find there is no more of an equal playing field. A stacked Spanish Cup would see Wyatt Campbell work his way from 6th to finish 3rd behind Charlie Williams with Charlie Roberts taking victory on his first race back after taking some time off last year. Sportsman 250 filled 2 lines on the grid making it anyones race when the green flag dropped. JL Reas would make it to turn one first followed by Sansing, David Mustin, Bubba Boswell, and Brodock. Brodock would move through the pack coming out of turn two behind Reas. Brodock would take the lead in turn 3 with a hard charging Sansing in tow. Sansing would show Brodock a wheel a couple times but came up just short as the checker flag waved. Reas would hold his third place finish fending off Mustin and Tim Banks. Wyatt Campbell would take victory in Sportsman 600 with Sansing claiming another second place finish. Shane Scott would put his Rotax 500 on top of the box in both Four Stroke Super Singles and Heavy Vintage with Charlie Williams taking second in both classes. Jeff Durand would claim another win on the night in Sportsman 750 and Richard Brodock would get his second win of the night in LightWeight Vintage over Bubba Boswell and JL Reas respectively.

Shane Scott (500)

As the Night came to an end we thank Todd Campbell and Baton Rouge Raceway for inviting us to take part in the 4th Annual Mike Gerald Classic. Thank you to all the competitors and the spectators for coming out. And a special thank you to Mike Gerald and racers like him that made the sport what it is.
