welcome to AHRMA Mag EDITOR IN CHIEF Alice Sexton ASSOCIATE EDITORS Joe Koury, Patrick McGraw FASTLINES EDITOR Volunteer Position Open MARKETPLACE & SWAP MEET EDITOR Volunteer Position Open LAST PAGE GUEST EDITOR Chuck Sun Waiting for my run with the ECTA at Maxton in 2003 with Team Cooked Goose. Riding the Sidney Cohn/Russell Duke fire-breathing Moto Guzzi Sport 1100. Unlike Bonneville, Maxton averaged your 3 trap speeds, I ended up with a 148mph., not enough for a record. You can read Sidney’s report here: http://www.teamcookedgoose.com/2003maxton.htm
Here we are again folks. I’ve had several members contact me reminiscing over the name change of this publication as they’ve kept copies of each edition of Vintage Views from its inception, and we aim to highlight those historical documents in every issue, lest we forget our humble beginnings. Then, of course, there are handful who prefer the old name. Yeah, I get it. But hey– you all should be thankful that the first name I suggested for the Mag was declined! As I work through each issue and implement a structure, my plan is to put the fun stuff in the first half of the Mag, then all pertinent, detailed info relating to AHRMA policy, programs and events in the back. Man, I was totally bummed when “AHRMA MOTORCYCLE MULLETT MAG, or AHRMA MMM” was rejected because I thought the “party in the front- business in the back”approach was the bomb, dang it! You’ll notice that “Letters” will be retired after this issue and replaced with “Flashback.” Here we’d like to see photos and short descriptions about your early MC experiences. This should be a lot more fun than grumpy letters and political rants, save that stuff for drunken FB, so let’s party in the front, eh? Right on! I’d also like to send a shout out to our offroad folks– please send me content! One of AHRMA’s goals as a not-for-profit is to preserve motorcycle racing history in the US and to educate the public about this legacy. I’ve been trying to give equal page count to RR and OR. But this is impossible if I don’t get any OR content. Hello? How about write-ups about some of the exotic machinery that dominates vintage dirt? Maybe the history of trials competition in the US? Women of AHRMA MX? Sure, we all love race reports, and they’ll still be included, but I think our heritage runs deeper than race schedules, results. and directions to the track. Heck, that stuff can be downloaded from our website if you need a printout. Think of these stories as fulfilling our educational mandate. Don’t worry if you’re a writer or not, we have cool-dude and dudette editors to make your stories shine. So, before you gripe about AHRMA Mag being all RR, did you send in any articles? I can always pull stuff out of my you- know-what, but it sure would be awesome to hear from y’all, especially since you’re the experts. So come on now- either be there or be square! That about does it for me. Here’s hoping you enjoy this issue. To get in on the fun, just give me a shout. Next up is the May edition. Deadline for articles and other content is the first week of April. Party in the Front, Business in the Back!

RACES!
A Letter from the Chairman.
I want to thank all the members who voted for me during the last election and the vote of confidence. I am happy to say that we had a good start to the year at Roebling for road race with a good turnout and a successful trial run at an AHRMA run Track Day. It seems to be a good approach for bringing out new folks because once they get to run with us, they usually get hooked. We did have a bit of a failure with our delivery of the new tech inspection program. It was a failure of sorts, but it gave us a very good bit of information on where we are deficient and how we will be able to implement the program in the future so that we can improve our tech inspections, be more consistent, and remove some of the problems related to having the vintage bike tech requirements dictated for the more modern bikes. The procedures for securing the newer machines is not the same as securing the older machines and we get it, but we have not done a good job, to date, making the separation. Our objective is to have a tech sheet available for vintage bikes, modern bikes, motard bikes, E-bikes, and side cars. The intent is for the rider to inspect their own bike, fill out the sheets and bring the sheets to tech which will reduce time in tech and improve the process of inspection. It is the rider’s responsibility to have an eligible bike, not the inspector. Faynisha and Tony Pentecost will be running Road Race Operations until we have the chance to do a search for candidates for Road Race Director. I think with what we have learned now, we can put together a good program for a director and make a good selection. We may already have what we need, but let’s go and take a look anyway. We will be making a call for resumes and introduction letters here soon. I want to thank the entire crew at Roebling for a job very well done, we pulled off another good weekend. By the way, the race school brought in another 23 riders, job well done by the Fast and Safe Race School. Other than that, we are sad to say that our beloved ED, Dave Lamberth is winding down his time as Executive Director and we wish him well in his new venture. He will surely be missed. Luke Conner AHRMA Chairman of the Board and Interim National Roadrace Director 724.462.1854 Luke.Conner@ahrma.org
This week it was announced that Dave Lamberth would be stepping away from his post as AHRMA’s Executive Director.
Elsewhere in this issue, I offer some thoughts and I thank Dave for his contribution and his dedication to our form of racing. He will be very difficult to replace and certainly he will be missed. One of the best things about working with Dave was his willingness to share the workload. By that, I mean that at the beginning of every season, Dave and I would divide the off-road schedule so that neither of us would be spending the year traveling back and forth between events. With Dave’s leaving, we will be making a few changes, and you may be seeing a few new faces this season. We will be leaning a bit more on the region coordinators to handle nationals in their part of the world. Jason Colon has agreed to jump in out west, but from time to time we may have a new volunteer to introduce. Be patient. Also new are the single page event sheets that Cindy and Alice have put together. They have collected all of the relevant information one would need for a single event and listed it on a single page. Camping fees? Check! Directions? Check! Although Cindy is chasing me from morning to night, it makes it easier for you to get the info you need and will save you the pain of trying to chase this stuff down on your own. Plus now, Alice can just grab the event info for AHRMA Mag right as it is captured on the web. Thanks, ladies! So, with that, the 2019 season is underway. Last week we kicked it off at Arizona Cycle Park in a dual event with our friends from the AVDRA. Next week we will be lining them up in SoCal with the CalVMX gang. After that we will have a 4 week break until the circus makes it east, and our first event at Waldo Motorsports Park. If my memory serves me correctly, it has been about 15 years since we were there last, and as I recall it was a pretty wet event. I am excited as ever to ride there again! Before I check out, I just want to thank everyone who has worked to make our program more professional. We are working on modernizing our scoring procedures, including membership, and sign up. Our racer facing information pages are a step or two ahead of where they were, and the details you need are more easily accessible. The AHRMA Mag is available digitally now, and I understand that there are plans to include articles, which you will enjoy! In short it has never been a better time to be an AHRMA member!! In closing, I want to give a final thanks to Dave Lamberth, whose stewardship, friendship, and love, are examples of what makes this organization great. Thank you, Dave. See you at the races!
Chairman of the Board Luke Conner and Trustee Louis LeBlanc will be cooking up some cajun specialities at the Roadracing Awards Banquet during the NOLA event.

Fred “900” Guidi AHRMA National Offroad Director 724.462.1854 fred.guidi@ahrma.org MARCH/APRIL 2019
Fans of dirt track racing and vintage motorcycles are in for a thrill when the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) hosts a pointspaying round in its national racing series on Saturday, April 27. Both advance and on-site registration are available. For all pertinent race information : go to www.ahrma.org David Aldana AHRMA National Dirt Track Director 770. 653. 1909 davidaldana13@hotmail.com
AHRMA’s National Dirt Track season is steadily moving ahead and looking forward to upcoming races; in particular, the May 4, 1/4 mile at Tar Heel, NC.
Promotion and track preparations are being looked after by Rick Lovett. Rick expects to have the facility in tip-top shape, as always. The SDTA group from Florida is again hosting the Callahan, Florida short track race, (just outside Jacksonville) on May 18th. Thanks to Ray DeLacqueseaux and Ward Jones, the race program runs like a fine watch. And the racing surface is like a pool table. On another point... The Atlanta M/C (president Dave Frederick) have redesigned and built/graded a new TT track. Riders who have been on it say “fabulous.” We will all be looking for some pictures, showcasing their laborious efforts, to enhance their already great facility. Big, BIG, announcement: We have added an additional event. The Sunshine Speed Show. It will provide the thrill-ride of a lifetime, April 26-28, 2019 in Lakeland, Florida, offering vintage cars, classic motorcycles, hot rod drag racing, dirt track racing and air shows, coupled with an ongoing soundtrack featuring 25 bands and solo artists on three stages. On April 27 we will be racing on a 1/4 mile dirt track designed my AFT racer Johnnie Lewis. This will be an AHRMA National. Headlining the show is a stellar line-up of celebrities from the speed universe who will meet and greet attendees, share their stories, and answer questions from the stage, plus gather for moderated panel discussions. Among the influencers scheduled to appear to date are: • David Aldana, an American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Hall of Fame inductee, and winner of four AMA Grand Nationals and the 1981 Suzuka eight-hour endurance race. One of the most versatile racers in the history of the sport, Aldana competed in nearly every form of motorcycle racing, including roadrace, motocross and speedway racing. • Cristy Lee, one of the hosts of Velocity Network’s All Girls Garage and a pit reporter and on-air host for MotoAmerica, MotoGP and World Superbike. • “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, considered the father of drag racing. Now 87, Garlits operates the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing on the grounds of his home in Ocala, Florida. • Skratch, who is considered a visionary in the custom car world for his retro pinstriping and custom fabrication. He is best known for his work on Velocity Network’s Overhaulin’ and numerous shows on Hot Rod TV. • Patty Wagstaff, an air show performer who has earned worldwide recognition for her accomplishments as a pilot, flying thrilling low-level aerobatic routines in competitions and air shows.

Dear Fellow Club Members, I would like to file this brief report: AHRMA’s Leadership had a very productive year in 2018/19. Here are some of the highlights: 1. Established programs that showcase our traditional historic road race classes. 2. Invited the next generation of classic MX bikes and enthusiasts to join us for 2019. 3. Invited the next generation of classic trials bikes and enthusiasts to join us for 2019. 4. Improved our print and on-line presence. 5. Installed fresh, new legal counsel. 6. Re-established a positive dialogue with Daytona International Speedway regarding a future early season event. 7. Successfully weathered the unfortunate storm of losing Cindy Cowell. 8. Improved operational transparency by sharing board meeting audio to members. 9. Provided a platform for Team USA to improve its standing in International Vintage RR Racing with our Phillip Island Challenge. 10. Saw an uptick in membership, even in these times of other groups’ shrinking membership. 11. Worked to improve our Road Race School and mentoring program. 12. Trademarked our AHRMA logo. 13. Renewed our corporate charter in the state of Ohio after an eight-year lapse. 14. Formalized a Code of Conduct to help us get along better in an ever advancing media world. We have more good things to do in the coming year. Thank you for your friendship and support, Arthur Kowitz AHRMA Life Member and Trustee

LETTERS Hi Alice (and AHRMA Executive Committee), I just received my Feb 2019 AHRMA-MAG (its hard not to say “vintage views”). My membership with AHRMA dates back to 1991. I too will speak up regarding the advertisements by Palmetto State Armory in both the Jan and Feb 2019 editions of this magazine. I am all in favor of AHRMA accepting advertising from companies outside of the motorcycle industry.
It has been past practice for AHRMA to accept “non- racing motorcycle” advertising for print in its publications. There have been several over my past 25 plus years of membership and I can specifically point to two examples. These being for jewelry and another for legal services, both published in Vintage ViewsJuly 2016. I do not recall AHRMA receiving any complaints regarding these ads. Nonmotorcycle related advertising can be found in most if not all major motorcycle magazines.
My point is, AHRMA should not censor advertising from legitimate companies who see its members as potential customers with the intent of being “politically correct.” Verne Elmore #784 Edgewood, NM

Taken in 1983 at Texas World Speedway with my Honda VF750F. I’m sportin’ new handme-down leathers fresh from my old pal Steve Wise after his career-ending crash at Laguna Seca. It’s my 1969 Triumph T100S named “Fiona.” We had our first crash on our first lap of our first practice day of our first race weekend...EVER! I was greener than grass. 1970. My first motorcycle. Papa Chief gave it to me and my brother to share. It was a mid 64-ish Suzuki 90cc two stroke. I was six. Dad would hold the bike until I got started because my feet didn’t reach the ground. Then he’d run along side me as I slowed to a stop so I could get off. I learned to ride that bike in the woods and fields with my dad on his Ducati scrambler 450. Two years later my dad got me a Bultaco 125 Alpina. By the time I was ten, my dad was taking my brother and me ice racing with his buds. It was great fun. –Bob Demetrius Member# 4452

For those of you who are relatively new to AHRMA, you may not recall that just a few short years ago, AHRMA was in dire straits.
Board members were loaning the organization money, creditors were waiting to get paid, and at AHRMA, life in general was a struggle. AHRMA was embroiled in an unwanted lawsuit, and the organization’s very existence was in question. Morale was not good, and there was a dark cloud over the organization. Fast forward several years and as Dave Lamberth steps down from his role as Executive Director, the organization that he leaves behind is so much better than when he first showed up! And as he moves ahead to another stage in life, on behalf of a grateful body, I would like to thank him. I first met Dave Lamberth at Mid-Ohio in 16
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
2006. Dave had just finished his first tour as AHRMA’S Executive Director and had moved on to private practice. Dave was here at MidOhio to race and to lend a hand, and I was looking for a way to be helpful. There were pallets of awards to be assembled, and I volunteered, along with Dave and his daughters, to put them together. Lambo and I immediately hit it off and we became fast friends. In 2008, Dave would once again be appointed Executive Director, and was charged with bringing AHRMA out of bankruptcy, and into solvency. I would soon be Off-Road Director and Dave and I would travel together to events. I immediately liked his no-nonsense style of management, as he was a joy to watch negotiate intricate deals with promoters. His grasp of complex financial issues, and his ability to AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
see the long game, made him perfect for what AHRMA needed. I have always believed that when the pupil is ready, the teacher arrives, and Dave was the right person to take over the reins of AHRMA at precisely the right time! I believe that it would be impossible to overestimate the effect that Dave has had on AHRMA’s long term viability. His honesty and integrity brought AHRMA back from the financial brink, and all quickly discovered that if Dave Lamberth shook your hand, the deal was made. He was a gentleman in all situations and did his very best to represent all members, all the time. His shoes will be hard to fill. Men like Dave Lamberth are not easy to come by. Over the last decade, I have had the pleasure of working with Dave on a daily basis, as we would assemble schedules, negotiate agreements, MARCH/APRIL 2019
work with promoters, buy insurance and porta potties, and generally take care of day-to-day AHRMA business. We would laugh, shake our heads, cuss occasionally, but in the end, working with Lambo was always rewarding. Who can forget Dave’s rider’s meetings where he would drone on and on about safe racing, while 20 minutes later he would be punting someone off the course who got in the way of his illegal 125 Honda? Or maybe it was the time that he put Corky on the wrong flight to a board meeting in New Jersey, while having Corky wind up in Pittsburgh. I remember the big scoring snafu at Diamond’s one year where he swore, he was done with racing. I recall our dinner bets on who would fall asleep first at trustee’s meetings, and how frustrated he would become when someone didn’t follow through with a promise. MARCH/APRIL 2019
In the end, I think that Dave agonized the most about shutting Barber down in 2017, when awful storms were predicted. Watching him calculate the amount of entries that he would have to refund was a not something for the faint of heart. He knew that it was the right thing to do, and he knew the costs. He always put members’ needs first. Of course, those who compete with Dave in the woods know him differently. Dave is an extremely competitive cross-country racer with a reputation for beating kids on modern bikes with his old crusty KDX200. Watching him bounce off trees with the finesse of a dancer is a thing of beauty that will leave the uninitiated shaking their heads. To be fair, Dave’s motocross prowess is somewhat less inspiring, which is why few have actually seen him do it. AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
Soon, another will hold the office of Executive Director, and I am sure that the board will choose the best candidate. Today, AHRMA is in a much better financial position than it is has been in many years, and the new Executive Director will not be baptized under fire. I will finish by saying that, on behalf of the AHRMA membership, I just want to thank you Dave for your service, loyalty, respect, generosity, and love! We wish you the very best, no matter what your future holds, and hope to see you on the starting line at an event soon. Your entries are on us! AHRMA Thank you, my friend. See you at the races! – Fred Guidi

Top: Rob Peberdy Maurice’s nephew in-law from Australia, Tim Joyce and yours truly get the Candy Manx fired up for race three. Left: A smiling Maurice Candy watches as his Manx gets the win in the morning’s race. Tim Joyce, race face.
When Maurice Candy and ten-time Premier 500 National Road Race Champion, Tim Joyce, decided to go see how America’s best would fare at the famous Australian G.P. Circuit Classic Rumble, little did they know that it would change their lives forever. FIM licensing requirements require riders over 50 to undergo an EKG to check for signs of heart disease. Tim’s test results revealed a non-malignant tumor in the aorta valve requiring open-heart surgery within the week. Therefore, as a top-level racer, Tim goes under the knife and has his heart bored and stroked to 50 over. All goes well. This particular race, which would normally be a rather risky lifethreatening endeavor, actually is responsible for saving Tim’s life. (Go figure, and tell your family racing is often what keeps us going.) Maurice Candy – now in his early ‘90s, and America’s MARCH/APRIL 2019
“I would like to thank Mark Mitchell because with out him, I would have never gotten the chance to race for the brilliant Maurice Candy. We made a team that was untouchable.” –Tim Joyce best Norton Manx builder – is also showing us it is time to live our dreams before it’s too late, no matter the age. I arrive on race day, Saturday and find out they’ve been struggling with an engine misfire. They still managed a 3rd, fastest qualifying time, and a front row grid position. The Island Classic uses a 4-race format, 2 races Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Lowest points wins the overall with the final race being the tiebreaker. AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
Bob Rosenthal, the Australian racer from Clatworthy-Willams Racing, has too much motor and takes the first win on Saturday. Maurice and the team are changing fuels, ignitions, plugs and anything that might help. The bike is running a little better but still requires short shifting to avoid the misfire. Race 2 takes off, lack of power does not help Joyce’s start, but riding over the limit and very late braking takes Tim to the front. A late braking move catches Rosenthal off guard and gives him the perfect unwanted view of Joyce winning the second race. Team Irony now has a night to try to figure out the misfire. Tomorrow will bring Races 3 and 4. Sunday is another beautiful day at Phillip Island; the outcome will soon be known. The gremlins have yet to be found in the Candy Manx engine, although they are still hiding somewhere within. It’s just up to Joyce to ride the wheels off the Manx and he does, winning race number 3. Race 4 is approaching, but we’re still trying to find the horses that are playing hide-’n’-go-seek, but time runs out and it’s first WWW.AHRMA.ORG

call. Joyce leathers up, Maurice has his race face on for the last hurrah, and it’s show time. We’ve done everything we can but it is time to go racing. The lights go green, the fine-tuning on the clutch gets Joyce off the line better, but he is still down on power and falls back a few places. Bob Rosenthal knows now he has to keep his head down for the overall win, and he does. Even though Maurice and Joyce win two of four races at The Island Classic, the overall eludes them. But I can still see their smiles after those wins. Well-fought battles. Congratulations to Maurice Candy and Tim Joyce from the American motorcycle community. A week later, while spending time with his sister who lives in Sydney, Australia, Maurice Candy suffered a severe stroke paralyzing his right side and taking his speech. He is in therapy and improving. AHRMA – Ron Melton ronpaco@gmail.com Above Left: Tim Joyce, stroked and bored, ready to race his way to the podium. Above Right: Tim and Bob share the podium. Time Capsule
Cracked Open at Roebling Road Raceway Roper Saturday– McLean Sunday By Ron Melton

The Inaugural “AHRMA Vintage Cup” sponsored by Road Racing World.com and NYC Norton
highlighting historic 350GP roadrace bikes made its debut Saturday the 23rd under clear skies and a warm track just outside of Savannah Georgia at Roebling Road Raceway. All the bikes that you, grandpa and your father watched while leaning against the fence in the 60’s showed up. They lined up on the starting grid, watched the 1 board go sideways and the green start flag wave. Sounds from an age when MV Augusta, HD Aermacchi, Ducati and Bultaco motorcycles all running side by side was heard today. The race grid consisted of machinery piloted by some of the legendary Hollingsworth family, the 1982 Isle of Man TT winning American, David Roper, and defending AHRMA 350GP Champion Alex McLean as well as 5 rows of hardcore racers on these exotic machines. Racers are dusting off and hot rodding these bikes for the rumbles that will be worth the trip to the remaining rounds. Race one saw the power of the two HD Aermacchis jumping out for an early lead with Roper having a bike length by the first turn. McLean looking smooth and comfortable a few lengths back from Roper patiently waiting for 24

the right time to strike. Mclean stood Roper up on a late breaking inside pass running across the white one lap to go flag with a bike and a half edge. But in the back section of the track, traffic would play its cards and allow Roper to repass with head down he took the win. Close in pursuit was McLean with Don Hollingsworth grabbing the final podium position. On Sunday’s race the holeshot went to Roper and Mclean would have to reel him in if he wanted a chance for the win. A family feud took place with the Hollingsworths fighting for 3rd. McLean sitting on Ropers rear wheel was one of the best shows of the day. Hanging on the fence again like we did in the 60’s wondering when the move would be made, our blood was pumping. McLean comes around in the lead and proceeds to pull away. You could clearly see that Mclean was riding as if nobody was going to beat him today. Across the checkers it was McLean; Roper; Hollingsworth. AHRMA has opened up the can of whoop-ass with this new series. Dust off your classic 350 bikes, put your grandkids in the saddle and join the fun. Full series schedule can be found at AHRMA.org. AHRMA – Ron Melton ronpaco@gmail.com

MEMBERSHIP OPEN SESSION AHRMA Board of Trustees Meeting, January 19, 2019 Q:
Gary Gronow, garygronow@hotmail.com or 250-360-6390. My name is Gary Gronow and I am a long-term AHRMA member in good standing. I am also a 42-year member of the Victoria Motorcycle Club and I’m also on their Executive Committee. It Is my understanding that AHRMA is a member owned, nonprofit organization, not a privately run or funded operation. I am very unhappy with how the AHRMA Board of Trustees (DOT) is currently being run and I have many questions, as do many other members in the region, for which I respectfully demand answers. These are but a few of my questions. Bellew me, there are many more, but time Is limited during this member comment session.
A:
AHRMA Board of Trustees.
Q: Why isn’t the BOT following AHRMA’s by-laws, e.g. why were Associate members allowed to vote in the last two BOT elections when our by-laws clearly state that only full members can vote? Even though most of the BOT voted to allow this, the by-laws have not been changed to legally allow for such changes in voting. Changing the by-laws requires a vote of 9 of the 12 B0Ts to be legally binding. A:
The Board does follow the by-laws. After the 2018 election, it was discovered Associate members had been allowed to vote for nearly all of AHRMA’s history. Because Associates had a de facto right granted by their memberships, which could not be taken away prior to the 2019 vote, the Board voted to allow Associates to vote. Associates will be informed the voting privilege will be deleted on their next renewal.
Q: Is it true that a BOT member threatened
to sue AHRMA after he was removed from the BOT because he missed three consecutive board meetings? The by-laws dearly state that a BOT member who misses three consecutive meetings must resign his or her post. There is no provision in the by-laws for an exception to this rule. If there Is an Agreement Not to Sue and to Indemnify (See AHRMA Handbook, page 114), why did the BOT allow this member back on the board?
A: Just prior to the third meeting the Trustee was in an AHRMA race and was severely injured resulting in extended hospitalization. The BOT member obtained a legal Proxy for the meeting and submitted the proxy which was reviewed and accepted by AHRMA counsel. Against the AHRMA counsel recommendations he was voted off the MARCH/APRIL 2019
board. The threat of suit in these types of actions are not of any monetary value, only demands that the rules be followed. Many of us do not understand law and policies, hopefully this clears that up.
Q: Why hasn’t the 201B voting scandal been addressed with the members at large and why weren’t the results thrown out in favor of a “re-vote”? There was clearly fraudulent activity and the depths of the fraud would have been uncovered if the “audit’’’ had been done on a larger scale. A: The 2018 vote was discussed in depth at all three Board meetings. A record of those meetings is available on the web at ahrma.org. Contrary to some opinions, there was no fraud. The audit conducted by Alred Jackson, the Board’s CPA for elections, found, by accepted standard audit procedures, no reason to suspect such actions. No trustee ever called for a re-vote. Q: Why is there a perceived divide between Roadracing and Offroad disciplines? This division seems to be fueled by the AHRMA Members Only Facebook page. a BOT’s personal Facebook page which uses the AHRIMA name? A: This limited (approximately 10% of OR members and 10% of RR members feel this way) divisiveness has been occurring for a long time, primarily west of the Rockies, and precedes Facebook, it has become more of an issue recently by Facebook page use. It is clearly shown where this is coming from and we are in the process of making changes to the Digital and Social Media of AHRMA. By the end of next week will have a member code of conduct. Q: Why have members of AHRMA been suspended and threatened with fines or removal from AHRMA simply because of their comments on the AHRMA Members Only Facebook page? What were the reasons that the Executive Committee, not the entire BOT, make these decisions? A: There was a pre-existing lack of clarity on how reprimands are to be handled by the Board. We are putting together a formal procedure for reprimands of member conduct and correcting the problems with the system. The new member Digital Media conduct policies along with AHRMA Facebook Page and members conduct guidelines will be reviewed by counsel and released soon.
AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
The following TWO questions all pertain to the AHRMA members only Facebook group and are answered together.
Q: Why is a BOTs personal Facebook page being used as or perceived to be an official AHRMA social media page? AHRMA already has an official Facebook page which seems to be left by the wayside in favor this members personal Facebook page. Q: Why is this personal Facebook page being used to solicit member comments which are used to form AHRMA policy, e.g., the pall regarding instituting nationwide voting? Why was it so important to rush into this change in voting right before the 2018 election? A: The AHRMA members only Facebook group was started by Kevin Burns, an AHRMA Trustee. There is page called the “AHRMA - Vintage Road Race” (RR) group and it is a public group started by another AHRMA member to give road racers a place to interact and allow others interested in RR to learn more about what we do. That group has about 5,000 members with about 300 AHRMA members participating which made it typical of many FB groups– lots of opinions and many not friendly. Too much noise, not enough substance, and I was frustrated by it. I wanted a space where we did not have to put up with the noise and a space that included all disciplines. There is a comment on the AHRMA website that offers more of my reasoning for doing all this. AHRMA members only is considered a closed group by FB because each person needs to be accepted. In our case, a current AHRMA membership is required. We have rules of decorum, and I am the only administrator. No other Board member—including the EC and the ED— is involved. Here are my rules: PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY. A small word of caution to the group, and what I hope is a gentle reminder. Beyond the requirement to be an AHRMA member in good standing, the rules governing the group are simple and straight forward: Keep the discussions cordial. No slamming, no fake news, no profanity– well, not the crude type. If you have a question, this is the place to ask it. If you have an answer, provide it. We have the best racing organization in the country. Let’s keep it that way. I know a post may bring an angry response on occasion; we’re all human, but please do your best to keep the threads focused on making WWW.AHRMA.ORG

AHRMA better. This is not my group, it is yours. Let’s treat everyone with due respect. The rules are simple (see the last paragraph). If I feel a warning is warranted, I will message you my concern. If you continue in the same vein, I will remove you. Thanks. Also, in regard to AHRMA in general, the group is approved by the Board. Below is a post Kelly Shane wrote in early November when the group was discussing the proposal to move to a national election format. BTW, Debbie Poole had asked in the Board’s discussion what the members thought of the proposal. That’s what started the thread on Oct. 31. Here are Kelly’s comments. Kelly Shane: The “official AHRMA communications channel” is the AHRMA website. News and announcements are also made on the AHRMA FB page secondarily. Kevin is correct in that the Board approved of this group as a means of members only discussing AHRMA related issues.
A: Answer to part 2 regarding the national vote, we are following the by-laws and correcting a mistake that created a situation where a small group of the western OR membership had been able to vote for trustees from their region and sport to occupy every seat on the board for the West. Some say the decades long erosion of the Western off and on road racing series was a result of that. A return to the by-laws allows election balance as was seen in the 2019 election. Q:
Why did AHRMA rehire someone as part of the Communications program who they previously fired from the same paid position within AHRMA?
A: The candidate who applied for the job vacated by the previous Communications Director was highly qualified. Additionally, it was essential the position be filled quickly to ensure the membership continued to receive the magazine in a timely manner. Q: What would happen if the IRS audited AHR MA7 We are supposed to be a member owned, non-profit organization, but Luke Conner, the BOT Chairman, and an Executive Committee member, aka Luke’s Racecraft, can sponsor a paid road race at an AHRMA National event, isn’t this a conflict of interest? A: AHRMA is not a non-profit. It is a not-forprofit organization. A simple web search will explain the difference. The rest of the question has no relevance. Luke’s Racecraft benefits only in the exposure of support for our organization in the same way as Speed and Sport benefits in its support of Trials. Q:
Why does it appear that the Executive Committee decided who would be appointed to paid positions (Membership Director, MARCH/APRIL 2019
Communications Director to name two), instead of the Executive Director? Isn’t it the Executive Director’s job to hire or fire paid AHRMA employees?
A: Why does it appear the sun shrinks in size from sun up to high noon? Point of View. The Executive Director hires and fires paid AHRMA employees. The EC merely announces the ED’s decisions. Why wasn’t the Membership Director vacancy, a paid position in the organization, advertised and a call for qualified applicants issued? AHRMA had an excellent candidate within the membership who knew the job well. Going outside the organization would have negatively impacted the position during the training process. Q: Is it a conflict of interest that a member of the Communications Department, who appears to work for Luke Conner in the capacity of his personal business’ web master, is now AHRMA’s one of AHRMAs paid Communications Director? A: In short, No. For those that need clarity please do a web search on the term “conflict of interest.” Q: Why do we now need two Communication Directors, a digital media and a print media director, to perform the job when AHRMA previously employed one person? Why are there ‘job announcements” In the online magazine soliciting help for these two new positions? A: Communications duties have been handled by a two-person team over the past 12 years. Tim and Kathy Lile, and Matt and Ginger Hilgenberg performed the duties of these two very different media. Both mediums have become more sophisticated and complex and require very different skill sets. The changes initiated over the short time since Cindy McLean and Alice Sexton have been hired should demonstrate the quality of the hires. “Job announcements” have been requests for information on our web site and article submissions in AHRMA MAG. Q: Who authorized the change in name of Vintage Views to AHRMA Mag? The Communications Department didn’t ask the members or the board, for that matter, if the magazine needed a name change. A: The request for a name change was made by the Communications Dept., specifically the Print Media Director, and approved by the ED as per the ED’s duties and responsibilities as described in the by-laws. All changes to our magazine were presented to the membership in the January issue of AHRMA MAG, pg.4.
AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
Q: Who authorized Vintage Views/AHRMA Mag to be placed online? Why would anyone pay extra to Join an organization with the magazine as one if the advantages when the magazine Is available online for anyone to read? A: The magazine was placed on-line for the benefit of readers who are interested in AHRMA but might not be members. The added exposure also benefits our sponsors. Its web publication is also in line with our duties as written in our Articles of Incorporation, Article III, Purpose. Like the Handbook, AHRMA MAG is sent to all members in good standing. A direct quote from the recent past ,“If you would prefer to not receive either of these publications– they are both available on-line– contact the Membership Director.” Q: Why didn’t all members receive their Vintage Views prior to the 2019 Board of Trustees election? I still haven’t received my December 2018 issue and had to print a ballot and mail it AHRMA, incurring postage cost to express mall my ballot, along with two other ballots from AHRMA members who did not receive their magazine either. My fiancé received her copy and she and I have the same address. This was THE most important issue of the year. A: That is a question for the USPS. In fact, the December issue of VV was mailed a few days earlier than scheduled. Q: What facts support certain board members’ complaints that Offroad is a financial drain on AHRMA? What exactly does AHRMA spend on National and Regional offroad events and how does that compare to what AHRMA spends on road race events? A: That is not a complaint of the Trustees. It has been raised by members reading the financial reports published with the Board minutes. All financial information is there for public perusal and analysis. Q: Why don’t offroad promoters receive an accurate membership list, instructions on what must occur at sign-up, I.e., physically checking membership cards for expiration dates, why don’t they receive a list of all racing classes, e.g. engine displacement classes, age classes, premier classes, classic classes and a clear description of what qualifies as a premier or classic bike? A: We are working on the technical aspects of the first part of your question. The balance is a duty of the OR directors. We will direct your complaint to them. Q: Why is Series Tracker still such a problem to log into and navigate?

MARCH/APRIL 2019
A: This is a question best addressed by Series Tracker, Online@Seriestracker.com , or call them at: 231-780-4604. Q: Why do so many day-to-day questions get referred to the Executive Committee rather than the entire Board? Doesn’t the Executive Committee only need to make decisions when something is so urgent that it cannot wait for a full SOT discussion or vote?
A: AHRMA does not make money or break even on the awards ceremony. Workers and Volunteers are allowed to participate at the dinner. This is a decision that has been made for years. We are making some changes recently where Luke’s Racecraft and LeBlanc Racing are cooking for the ceremony whereas in the past, most venues required that they cater the dinners. Hopefully, this will save money by using sponsors to offset costs.
A: Per the by-laws, the EC, in conjunction with the ED, handles the day-to-day operations of the Board. However, if you feel the entire Board should be addressing your question, you may always send it to the entire Board via email.
Q: Why does it appear the certain BOT members are trying to turn AHRMA into a road race organization? When addressing members in printed or social media, the bias to road racers Is clear in such simple terms as “attention in the paddock’ when offroad would say “attention in the pits”. It also seems that the website and magazine feature road racing more prominently than off road events.
Q: Why doesn’t the Executive Director return many member emails or phone calls? Several of us have called and emailed with questions or concerns but have not received a response from him. A: The ED is responsible for all of AHRMA’s daily business activities, and he is quite busy. We are working on a modification on the website and the AHRMA Facebook page that will allow members to get answers and make suggestions by routing them to the appropriate person. Q: Why does the Executive Director seem to refer simple day-to-day questions to the Executive Committee, e.g., my fiancé requests for duty statements and salary and benefits information for paid AHRMA employees. The Executive committee denied her request without explanation? As a member owned, nonprofit organization, shouldn’t this Information be available to the members whose dues help fund these positions? A: Anything considered public information is published. We meet the standards as established in the by-laws and as a matter of law. Q: Why does AHRMA historically lose large sums of money for the Road Race Awards dinner? For example, it is my understanding that, at one such dinner, members only paid half of the actual price of the dinner, requiring funds from AHRMA’s budget to pay the remainder of the bill?
A: We have five disciplines, all equally represented. Our media directors are always looking for more information, articles, and stories from members, but they have to receive them first. We see no bias. Q: In closing, good people are volunteering their time to support AHRMA and certain board members seem to think that AHRMA is a business whose purpose is to make money and that offroad disciplines are a burden to the organization. Members are leaving AHRMA because of the infighting between the BOT and the obvious movement by certain board members to get rid of offroad or forcing off-road to add newer and newer classes just to ‘fill up the grid”! A: We greatly appreciate all who volunteer, without them AHRMA would not be able to function We are not aware of any “infighting.” The board works together as a group for all of AHRMA. The BOT has a fiduciary duty to operate the organization with the membership in mind. The organization has to exist well into the future for all disciplines and every board member is here to support ALL of AHRMA.
Q: I joined AHRMA because of the era of bikes it originally represented. I am not interested in competing against bikes from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. There are venues for these bikes that are better suited to newer bikes. AHRMA is, and should remain, a member owned. nonprofit organization which was developed to showcase motorcycles from a specific era, for all motorcycle disciplines. While I am not a “we have always done it this way” kind of person, change simply to “fill up the grid” and make money for the AHRMA bottom line should not be the new normal. This organization belongs to the members of ALL race disciplines, not just a small group of people who think that they know what’s best for the organization. Thank you for your time. A: AHRMA was, and is, a Vintage focused organization. Sadly, that outside of a few venues, there are simply not enough entries to interest a promoter who is faced with runaway insurance and overhead costs. MAHRMA membership is dropping as folks age and no longer compete and older bikes become more expensive to maintain. At many events the largest class is the +60 Intermediates. With the addition of the newer classes we are attracting younger riders who want to ride their version of vintage bikes at tamed down tracks, in a structured environment. If we untether Vintage from PV, we can hold Vintage only events which allows for MX, XC, and trials on the same weekend. We believe that this new program will pronmote growth for Vintage as well as attract new members. If you ride Next Gen and want to ride a complete weekend you will buy a PV bike, if you own a PV bike and want the entire AHRMA experience, you will buy a Vintage bike. This question has been addressed previously in greater detail in Vintage Views and at townhall type meetings. Interestingly, no alternative plan to this program has ever been submitted. It was the board’s position that we could not simply sit back and watch this program continue in decline. Thank you for your concern. AHRMA

2019 Transponder Rental Form AHRMA National Historic Cup Roadrace events utilize MYLAPS transponders for timing and scoring. The MYLAPS transponders compatible with our scoring system are: Bike Classic, Bike Flex and Bike Direct Power. Any one of these models is to be mounted vertically (pin pointing upward) on either fork leg, no more than 42 inches off the ground. Very nice barn find motorcycle that sports an earlier repaint on the tank and fenders. This old girl is how you like to find them with all of the dust and grime that one would expect from an original old rider. After sitting for many years, the engine and transmission have been serviced and all fluids have been changed out. The 61ci EL Panhead engine sounds good and starts easy but obviously has had some time on it before being set aside for its long sleep. Don’t miss out!! WITH GUEST EDITOR CHUCK SUN In the fall of 1981, an underdog team of four U.S. riders went to Europe and proved once and for all that America had caught on to the sport of motocross. Johnny O’Mara, Danny LaPorte, Chuck Sun and Donnie Hansen (left to right) swept the Trophee des Nations (250cc) and the Motocross des Nations (500cc) that year, beginning a 13-year period of domination by U.S. teams in the prestigious Olympic-like competition. –DEALERNEWS
The beer was lukewarm, drawn from the MXDN’s Cup under the Gaildorf Germany beer tent.
Tommy Croft, sitting next to me, chopped on the table wielding his Cup like a tomahawk. Noyce chided “Stay on and party, have some pomme frit’s!” Belgian Meister Gaston Rahier laughing took a turn to reshape the pewter. I intervened, “Dude, that Cups a cool memory!” A memory I came to realize later, Tommy would prefer to forget; having volunteered a second row start to begin the first moto, suffering a front flat in the second. That’s the unforgiving nature of motocross, like the fate bestowed upon newly crowned US champ and teammate, Rick Burgett, a snapped collarbone, danke shön! Few know how close this team came to a first U.S. win with Hannah’s 2-5, my ‘rookie fill in’ 8-2 and Tommy’s 15 we drank from a fourth place Cup. Two years adrift with Mt. St. Helen’s volcanic ash mixed in the top soil, the throttle stuck wide open up the jump. A glance down to see the top of Broc Glover’s helmet, triggered a split-second decision to jettison the bike folding my ankle on impact, inaugurating Washougal’s ‘Chuck Sun Jump.’ 46

That week I listened in disbelief as Honda manager Dave Arnold called to say, “Roger wants to send a Honda only team to MXDN,” my ankle unable to support any weight, I gambled a reply, “Three weeks, ya, I’ll be ready!” “I can hardly move my ankle,” I tell Jeff, it was Spencer’s cast-like-tape-job that enabled me to ride. Ripping a tear off, impatient I lost traction on a greasy knoll and flipped the factory 500 Honda that came crashing down to strike me only in one place, my ankle. Collapsing in the tent writhing in pain, the announcers are going off keeping pulse on the lead, now shout out “The U.S. Wins! The U.S. Wins!” Arms draped, the U.S. team of LaPorte, Hansen and O’Mara hoist me up to the top step of Bilstein’s podium in Germany. I feigned elation to mask the selfloathing that had inhabited my psyche. I had unpacked an understanding of the frustration that informed Tommy to smash his Cup, what could I do? Not wanting to spoil the moment, I basked in the US win, our second, the first coming the week before in Lommel, Belgium. –Chuck Sun
In more recent times, vintage racing in France, “Merci Mr. Sun, can you sign this puzzle from Germany?” Images explode of 1978 cold war battle between Russian Valery Korneev (RIP) and myself vying for runner-up. Korneev teamed with Yuri Khudiakov, Russian Legends Vladimir Kavinov and Guennady Moisseev (RIP) to take top team honors, Russia’s last, as the bear went into hibernation.
