Living in northwestern Pennsylvania makes for an interesting transition to the racing season. Most clubs within a three-hour drive are finished racing around September/October, and won’t start their new season until well into late April/May. This means that unless you want to travel or pack a bunch of snow gear and keep the momentum going, life slows tremendously; no more constant travel every weekend. As the calendar turns from April to May and the view outside my window has more green than white, it’s about time to start back up. That means more frequent travel, more airport hassles (last year, almost all of my flights were either delayed or canceled), and more time spent in hotel rooms. But overall, these are only slight discomforts, the “cost of doing business” if you will, that allows me to hang out with some amazing people, watch some phenomenal racing, and hopefully get a few good photos along the way. So here’s to another year of vintage racing!! see you on the track!

Whose club is this, anyway?

T

he first few months as Executive Director of AHRMA have been exciting, challenging, and illuminating. During this time, we’ve learned a lot, discovered opportunities, and even created some wins in a short time. We can continue to win, grow stronger, and leave a legacy for future AHRMA members, but we need your help to do that.

This is YOUR club, and we are all here to support and serve you, our members. As members/owners, we all have many benefits and responsibilities. Involvement, access, and support are so important to our future. I’m asking all of us to consider how we can invest in our organization now. I can honestly say that this race organization and the people within it should be proud to be the biggest and best racing club in the U.S. Our tent is the largest and most inclusive of any racing organization worldwide, and the vibe at all of our events is one of family, friends, and true camaraderie. “We focus on good times, not just lap times” sums up a weekend at an AHRMA event. I’m proud to be a part of this organization, and my sole focus – day in and day out – is to create wins, serve the members of our club, and continue to build sustainability for the long haul. Some of this is culture and some is financial strength, and we need your help with both. When we first met in Daytona earlier this year, I shared that we would need to focus on 3 things…Membership, Sponsorship, and Partnership. As I’ve met many of you and discussed the past, present, and especially future, a few things have become clear. • First, we have always had a very committed membership. Team members have willingly volunteered in many different ways to serve the club and their fellow members. Many of our members have enjoyed volunteering to work an event, be part of a committee, take on specific initiatives, and many other tasks. We’ve created a culture of giving back and supporting the entire organization. • Second, our members have participated broadly in many of the events we have run, sometimes with considerable travel. This is critical to create the financial engine to do what we do and create even better membership experiences for the future.

organizations do), or simply participating in as many events as you can, we need your support. Some of you may be asked to support us in some of the ways noted above, and I’m sincere when I say, “we are grateful for your partnership – thank you.” I promised you all I would be a good steward for our business. We are focusing on the right things and making positive changes to systems, processes, and initiatives. All of this will combine to create a stronger club and a brighter future, but only with your help. This is YOUR club, and I will never lose sight of that. I will be sharing all of the details on our initiatives, wins, plans, and goals at the Board of Trustees meeting in July at Laguna Seca. If you can attend, we would like you to be there. If not, we will share all of this information as a follow-up, of course. Please take a moment now to give back to AHRMA. Every member can make a difference if we all chip in with some sort of support. I am accessible to each of you as needed, and I enjoy your input and guidance. Thank you in advance for continuing to build and support AHRMA. Now, let’s race!

WHAT OTHER GEAR SHOULD I BRING?

Hello AHRMA Family

S

ince joining the AHRMA staff, time seems to be moving at warp speed and while it’s sometimes (okay – oftentimes) hectic, I am enjoying it! This past month, the AHRMA team traveled to Carolina Motorsports Park for a four-day weekend including a track day, practice day, and two full days of racing. Race coverage is elsewhere in this issue, but let me just add the racing was top-notch and David Roper getting his hair trimmed in the paddock was a sight to behold as multiple racers assisted him with this process.

Riding boots that fully cover the ankle. Gauntlet-style gloves with full wrist coverage. One or two-piece leathers. Two-piece leather suits must zip together. Ballistic nylon suits such as Joe Rocket, AeroStitch, etc. are acceptable in the Novice ONLY. They can be one piece or two-piece that zip together with 50% zipper contact, reinforced and padded shoulders, elbows, hips, and knee areas. No chaps. AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE A BACK PROTECTOR? Advanced and Intermediate group riders are required to wear back protectors. Soft back pads sewn into suits are not enough.

WHAT ARE THE DATES AND LOCATIONS FOR THE REMAINING TRACK DAYS? June 16th - New Jersey Motorsports Park July 21 – Ridge Motorsports Park August 25 – Black Hawk Farms Raceway Riders can experience track days at their own pace, but if you’re looking to improve your riding technique and/or speed, AHRMA is offering the Ed Bargy Advanced Track Riding Technique Workshop taught by none other than our starter, Ed Bargy. Don’t let the word “Advanced” in the name of the workshop fool you. Ed’s unique and seasoned instructional skills offers something for everyone. In short, if you’re a beginner, he can help you to improve, if you’ve been riding for a while, he can help you to improve! Student count for this school is capped at 12 to allow oneon-one instruction. The option to enter Ed’s Workshop is included in the online track day registration. That’s a lot of information and you may be wondering where to register, and I certainly don’t want to you leave you hanging. Simply go to www.ahrma.org/schedules-results/ Consider this your personal invitation to hang out at AHRMA track days!

Having just completed the second of five track days, I wanted to highlight that in an effort to grow our sport, AHRMA is offering Track Days at select events this year. It’s our way of inviting non-road racers to bring their bikes to the track in hopes that the racing bug bites! I encourage any AHRMA member that has a street bike to join us at one of the remaining Track Days. Frequently asked questions regarding Track Days: HOW ARE RIDERS GROUPED? 1. Beginner, 2. ith the 2022 season well under way there’s no time to stop and look back yet. After eight rounds over four months we head into our first of two action packed tours. First we head to Perris Raceway in Perris California for three races over two days. I for one can not wait to get back to the west coast to see of the great racers and friends I met last year. The following weekend we stop in Topeka Kansas for the AHRMA Classic MotoFestTM in the Heartland. With the help of Jim Doyle we were able to add AHRMA Dirt Track to an already amazing weekend. The very next weekend we head to the legendary Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway on Friday June 3 and the following night we travel 30 minutes down the road to Cincy Speedway. The season doesn’t slow down yet. From there we head back to California to the historic Lodi Cycle Bowl. And all this just to say for the

Off-road racing has a tendency to get bumpy on occasion as you all know the lines are constantly changing and if you don’t make a change from time to time you are almost certain to get stuck in a rut. We are blessed with many opportunities across the country to race in many different types of terrains. From grass tracks, modern MX tracks, AMA Pro National facilities, to world famous facilities such as Chaney Ranch, it was a hustle to get Chaney Ranch together at the last minute. However, the Southwest team with Terry and Mindi McPhillips, Luke Sayer, Morgan Proffitt, Pat Wilkening, Keri Kress, Pete and many others made the event happen. The property was beautiful with tons of amazing history that landowner Ed Picozzi is more than happy to share. I hope we get to visit the property again in 2023. See you at the races.

Iconic Britten V1000 to run demonstration laps at AHRMA NJMP Event WORDS: AHRMA STAFF PHOTO: ETECHPHOTO.COM

A battle-tested icon will be seen and heard at the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) event at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) June 16-19. New Zealander Stephen Briggs will be doing laps on Bob Robbins’ Britten V1000. “I am very lucky to have made great friends with (Briggs) after I acquired the bike, he rode to second place in the World Bears championship in 1995,” Robbins said. “I was able to reunite him with the bike in 2014.” Robbins explained that the CR & S Britten was the first customer produced bike for Roberto Crepaldi of Café Racers & Superbikes (CR & S) and loaned to the factory from new for their racing efforts. Known as P001 for the first production bike after three factory bikes, it has been rebuilt twice since 2014 including updating new components such as rods, pistons, and bearings. “The engine cases and most components are original from 1994 12

and saw many thousands of Worldlevel race miles in its day including the Isle of Man Senior TT in 1996 with Shaun Harris,” Robbins said. “Many parts have been replaced or reproduced to keep it running well.” Some upgrades including a Motec electronic system have been added to preserve the original components in working condition and add some fail-safe features. The engine has been slightly detuned by lowering the RPM limit. “In the day, these bikes were revved as high as 12,500 RPM at times and made 165 HP at the wheel,” Robbins said. “The black and yellow color scheme was based on the CR & S racing team colors,” Robbins said. “After a successful history of racing at the World Championship level, it was retired and rebuilt after 1997 and put on display.” The motorcycle had not been run for many years following. Robbins purchased the Britten in 2014 and it

underwent a complete tear-down and refresh with the intention of using the bike for demonstration laps at racetracks. Briggs has been on board the bike at several events since 2014, including the Pukekohe Park, Hampton Downs Classics events, and the Ruapuna New Zealand BEARS and John Britten 20th anniversary BEARS events in New Zealand during 2015. Continuing its tour in 2015 in the United States, the bike was on track at NJMP and was one of ten V1000’s in attendance and was one of the five on track at The Barber Vintage Festival. During 2016, it turned laps at the Ducati Club Race Assen. During 2017 the V1000 was at the AHRMA national at Road America, and the Isle Of Man Lap of Honor 2017. More recently, it was back at the 2019 Pukekohe New Zealand Classic, Burt Munro Challenge Invercargill New Zealand, and AHRMA’s Road America event. AHRMA ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL Thunder Valley Motocross Park Preview WORDS: JASON COLÓN PHOTO: KEITH RYBURN Although Covid-19 disrupted an awful lot during the last couple of years, it’s also the reason that AHRMA is going to be racing at Thunder Valley, the magnificent and storied Lakewood, Colorado track on May 2122. Well, sort of. Flash back to 2020, with pandemic restrictions in full swing, the Pro Motocross National race there was delayed until early October. As luck would have it, the annual vintage race had already been scheduled for the week prior. With the race requiring major reconstruction of the track anyway, it was now feasible to reshape the entirety of the undulating hillside course just for vintage racing! Never before had this been done due to the tremendous amount of work and equipment it takes to reconstruct the track, but due to Covid-19 delaying the Pro 14

Motocross National schedule it became possible. The idea of having an AHRMA MX National at Thunder Valley was born. In 2021, the AHRMA Rocky Mountain Region along with its partner RMVMC scheduled its regional series race at Thunder Valley in May just prior to the normally scheduled Pro Motocross National. This timing again allowed for the full national track to be transformed. However, Mother Nature had other plans; two inches of rain fell on Saturday night making the tamed track unrideable. When all appeared grim an indomitable spirit prevailed. Operated with skill and precision by Thunder Valley staff, its fleet of heavy equipment took to the track clearing feet of mud and sculpting the surface into a raceworthy course. Victory was secured AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

from defeat, and an impressive result was achieved. For 2022, not only is the AHRMA Vintage, Post Vintage, and Next Gen MX National at Thunder Valley scheduled to precede the Pro Motocross National held there, allowing for the track to be completely transformed for our vintage bikes, but the race also falls on the weekend before the Heartland MotoFest in Topeka, KS making for an ideal back-to-back! No matter what happens, Thunder Valley’s skilled, dedicated staff will be prepared. So don’t miss this rare opportunity. Come race this fun and challenging track that has the greatest elevation changes and some of the best dirt in Colorado. And remember to bring smaller main jets...

MATE 65 Years of Motocross with Ohio Legend Henry Gref

Henry with son Jay at Saddleback East, 2021 photo by paula kyle-stephens

WORDS: PAULA KYLE-STEPHENS AND CO-AUTHOR/EDITOR TOD MILLER (AHRMA RIDER #326) PHOTOS PROVIDED BY: PAULA KYLE-STEPHENS AND HENRY GREF My initial reaction to writing this article was “Wait, do I know enough about motocross to ask the right questions?”. My husband quickly reminded me I’d written several articles in the past. I can honestly say I wasn’t prepared for the scope and breath of the MOTOCROSS Ohio legend Henry Gref. I first met Henry at the AHRMA race at Saddleback East in Bedford, Kentucky in May of 2021. I approached John Owen (then Great Lakes AHRMA 16

Director) and he pointed me in the direction of Henry’s trailer. Henry was very approachable and friendly. He shared with me the painful story of his recent liver transplant. He told me he was recovering well but still wasn’t back to a hundred percent. At this point, I knew this was a story I wanted to write about and a person I wanted to know better. Henry’s son, Jay, came out of the camper to join us and was as friendly and personable as his father.

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

I began asking Henry questions about his life and background for this article. Henry informed me he would “send me a box” and we traded phone numbers. A week later I received a packet of original articles detailing his 65 years of racing. The sheer volume of information was initially overwhelming. I read the articles and began a series of phone calls that helped me understand the motorcross journey of this amazing man who is difficult to describe in words. MAY 2022

Henry was born November 15, 1941, in Czechoslovakia during WWII. He started racing on a 50cc Jawa Pioneer at the age of 15. He rode one year of Speedway and followed that by riding some enduros, then moved on to motocross supported by a national club. At the age of 19, Henry was drafted into the Czech Army and after two years of service, he returned back to racing motocross. Over the next several years, Henry raced in the Czech Republic with good results. In 1968, the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia; during the invasion, his 18-year-old brother was killed. Mounting government political pressure forced Henry to make the decision to leave Czechoslovakia. After several months in Vienna, the family was able to secure visas to legally move to the United States. They arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, near the end of 1969. In 1970, Henry started racing in the Trans Am support class, supported by a Cleveland OSSA dealership. At the Unadilla Trans Am race, Henry received an offer to work for the New York-based Yankee OSSA Factory team. He became Barry Higgins’s mechanic on the National racing circuit. The following season resulted in Barry winning 10 races in the Florida series. That same year, Henry won the New York state championship. While working for Yankee, Henry also helped Dick Man with developing his DMR (Dick Mann Replica) OSSA flat tracker.

Marty Moates and Henry Gref

After Barry Higgins left OSSA, Henry moved to Florida to work for Yamaha South in Jacksonville, helping Brian Kenny, and Gary and Dwayne Jones doing the Florida Pro-Am races. During this time, Henry continued racing with very good results. In 1976, OSSA sent Marty Moats and Greg Robinson to Florida. Henry was hired to help them with bike setup and training to improve their results. Marty led the Winter-AM series at Gatorback in Florida and beat almost all the Japanese Factory Riders including Bob Hannah. Marty finished third overall for the series and nearly won a Supercross race (crashing out late over a triple). Based on these results, they decided to hire Henry as a full-time mechanic for Marty Moates on the Pro Circuit for 1977. In 1978 Henry moved back to Ohio to work for Competition Accessories. Henry continued racing on the AMA amateur circuit in the 30-plus and open class. MAY 2022

In 1985 Henry started racing at Loretta Lynn’s and then for the next 14 years, winning in 1993 and having top five finishes 10 times. In 1986 Henry won the Arenacross National Championship in the 30-plus class as a 45 year old In 1990 Henry won the AMA 40-plus amateur Supercross championship in Oklahoma. In 1992 United States masters of motocross at Muddy Creek first place 50 + 1992 winning the state championship at Mount Morris, PA. He raced the Pontiac Silverdome Amateur Supercross series for many years and won the event 18 times. He won the Florida Triple Crown Series three different times consisting of the Atlanta Supercross, the Gatorback Supercross and Gatorback outdoor combined. In 1995 Henry received a plaque for 40 years of competitive contributions to the sport of motocross from Jerry West at Gatorback. In October of 2000 Henry was recognized by the Michigan Dealer Association as the rider having the most wins in the Pontiac Supercross (18). Henry raced the Loretta Lynn’s National Championship until 2001 where he finished third at the age of nearly 60. In 2002, his cousin Eda Finek invited him to race in the European Classic Motocross (ECMO) at Holice Czech Republic on a CZ 250. Henry was able to get a fifth-place finish out of 40 riders on the gate! He continues to race the ECMO to this day. In 2003, Henry organized a US team to race in the classic trophy des nations with his cousin Eda Finek supplying CZ’s for the team. In 2008, the Czech organizers of the international vintage race awarded Henry a special trophy the “Night of Motocross” before the race for a lifetime support of motocross.

In 2009, Henry won the AMA Grand National Championship in two classes of vintage racing and was awarded in Las Vegas Over the past 20 years, Henry has also won 15 AHRMA National expert class championships. Henry has raced in Europe for many seasons with a number of top-three finishes. In his travels, he’s raced in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium, England, Denmark, Sweden, and a number of places in the Czech Republic. In 2017, Henry was a member of the Czech Republic team that finished third in the Motocross des Nations. In 2018, Henry’s third-place finish helped lead the Czech Republic to victory in the 72 + classic Motocross des Nations. As you can imagine, Henry is fairly well-known in the US and Europe. Over the years Henry has helped many top pro riders including Barry Higgins, Tony Destefano, Gary and Dwayne Jones, Marty Moates, Josh Steel, Tommy Watts, Mike Brown, Mark Burkhart, and Jeff Stanton. Henry’s friends in Czech Republic include Jaroslav Falta, Zdenek Velky, Antonin Bavorovsky, Eduard Finek, Zdenek Hores and Jarislav Cadek. Henry enjoys telling people about his life’s journey. During the many conversations I had with him, he would drift back to earlier times and revisit races and experiences. His passion and detail would transport me to the moment and I would feel as if I was experiencing it in real-time. Henry has a quick wit and an inviting personality. He’s often smiling and laughing, his joy is contagious. Henry is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to riding technique. While reviewing pictures and videos I had taken at Grear’s Motorsports Park, he commented on several of the riders. He complimented their style and the way other riders completed the different jumps and corners, and would occasionally comment on close calls or near falls, but never offered a negative word toward any of his competitors. He is the same at the racetrack. Often times I would see him offering help and advice to other riders and he would cheer them on and encourage them in their races.

Watching Henry ride was a treat. His grace and control were like a man 30 years younger. He is focused and driven to win but gracious when he doesn’t. When I saw his bikes set up prior to practice, I noticed there were

two identical bikes. Out of curiosity I asked him why. His response was simple: “you need to have a backup.” I noticed throughout the races that several competitors had mechanical problems and would retire early from

the race. The years of competition have taught him that you don’t want to make the trip and not be able to race. Writing this article has been a very special honor and privilege. It has allowed me to make new friends and expand my knowledge on the sport of motocross. Forming a friendship with Henry and his family has been a blessing to me and my husband, Richard. I look forward to the racing season and seeing our racing family. Legends like Henry Gref are oncein-a-lifetime occurrences. I’m glad I was chosen to write this article and capture a glimpse of what a lifetime of racing looks like. At the last Saddleback East races in 2021, the theory of the “twin bikes” revelation was brought to light after the last race of the day; Henry was excited to share that one of his CZ’s quit upon heading to the start line. He was about fifty feet from his campsite, and with excitement and a twinkle in his eye as he told this story; “I threw the stalled bike up against the nearest fence ran back to grab the twin bike,” and with total excitement, stated “and I still won!” As he was telling the story, I couldn’t help noticing the expressions of admiration on the faces of friends and family listening to this Ohio motocross legend tell of this amazing plight. I am quite sure the rest had the same thoughts as I when all that went through my head was....”wow, my hope is to remain as young at heart and mind as this amazing new friend Henry Gref.” Lastly, one of my recent phone calls with Henry just brought a smile from ear to ear when he announced he had recently made the decision to race until his young age of 90. Now that’s MOTOCROSS dedication!

T

he 3rd AHRMA road race event of the 2022 season fell upon Carolina Motorsports Park on March 17th – 20th. Maybe not the warmest weekend by Carolina standards but most importantly, it was warm enough by Midwest standards. Fast becoming an AHRMA tradition, CMP is a local favorite. With enough elevation changes to make turn 8-9 interesting and a “fun” blind uphill charge at turns 2-3, CMP is a fast track, with good motor necessary for 3 distinct straights. The

sequence of WOT at turns 9 and 10 requires a complementary gut check to the usual skill and muscle memory needed. The rain stayed away after Friday, but spring brought other challenges. Ralph Staropoli said it best. “Sunday was cooler, and you’re only on the right side of the tire for much of the track, so by the time you got back to turn 1, the left side was cold and had traction problems.” Challenges aside, racers were excited to be back. Christopher Akaydin was effusive. “I love the tracks variety of fast sections, technical turns, and plenty of places to pass.”

TRY, TRY AGAIN Nobody likes coming up short on Saturday, but that’s why Sunday exists. Line ‘em up and do it again. Quite a few CMP riders had ample motivation on Sunday. After allegedly crashing four times in 2020-2021, Jonas Stein brought home first place in the Race 1 CB160 race on Saturday, with a second place on Sunday. His Sunday nemesis? Christopher Akaydin

roasted everyone with a 1:59 best lap time in Race 1 and took the checkered. Saturday saw John Beldock pull off a close one in Race 2 - Sound of Thunder 2 - against a hard-charging Arnold Hastings on his KTM 890 Duke R, with Robb Weins closing out the podium. Hastings returned the favor on Sunday, taking the checkered over Christian Meekma and Beldock with just 2.812 seconds separating.

Race 2 - Vintage Superbike Heavyweight saw Jeremy Maddrill comfortably coast to first while William Brint white-knuckled his way to second over Kevin Rammer. The margin of almost-victory? A mere 0.527 of a second. Rammer improved to second on Sunday, with Maddrill repeating as winner. Race 3 saw Mark Morrow and his RD400 continue his Formula 500 clinic with a four-second gap over

second-place finisher Dan Sokolich (also on a RD400), with Kevin Dinsmoor filling out the podium. Sokolich gained a measure of revenge on Sunday with a 0.266-second margin of victory over Morrow on Sunday. Christian Jensen was the lone Race 3 - 500 Premier Saturday entrant but muscled his way into Formula 500 lap times and posted a best lap of 2:08.262. Solid. Sunday saw Brian Larrabure join the party and take first place, Jensen settling for second. Race 7 - Formula Vintage’s Saturday run featured William Brint taking first over David Wallace and Alan Perry. Jeremy Maddrill took top honors on Sunday, with Brint and Keith Powell going 2-3.

Alex McLean eked out a two-second victory in Saturday’s Race 9 - Class C Foot Shift race. David Tompkins bested McLean on Sunday, with Scott Dell taking third.

Cooney and Adrian Jasso. Cooney fought back on Sunday to take first, with Colton Roberts and Dave Frick finishing 2-3.

The inimitable Ralph Wesson took top honors in Race 9 - Class C Hand Shift, but relinquished first place to Tim Joyce on Sunday, with Joseph Miller bringing up the rear.

MINUSCULE MARGINS

Race 10 - Open 2-Stroke brought the noise in the first contest, with Ralph Staropoli taking first over Darrell

There was a number of blink-andyou-missed-it finishes. Plenty of riders had to sweat it until they crossed the stripe. And even then they couldn’t be sure if they’d gotten on the podium. The Saturday Race 4 - Thruxton Cup race saw Clint Austin take the top spot with Paul Canale taking second just shy of five seconds later. Matthew Estell filled out the trio. Austin won again on Sunday, with Canale getting out-muscled for second by a mere 0.385 seconds, courtesy of Edward Blount. Saturday’s Race 4 - Novice Historic Heavyweight ended with Michael Shumaker aboard his trusty CB350 running away with first place over Mark Smithard and the ageless Mitch Skaggs and his SR500 Skaggs got Shumaker back on Sunday with a 0.870 margin of victory.

Christopher Akaydin once again took first, this time in Saturday’s Race 9 - 200GP race over Tim Terrell and Mitchell Barnes. Jonas Stein was the dark horse on Sunday, pushing to within 0.650 seconds of Akaydin’s winning margin. Sakis Vasilopoloulos got a Saturday freebie first place in Race 9 - 2-Stroke Classic 250GP over non-starter Tom Hilliard, but Hilliard’s Sunday almost made up for it. He pushed Vasilopoloulos to within 0.597 seconds of the top spot aboard his Yamaha TD2. Saturday’s Race 10 - Sound of Thunder 1 race had Israel Gillette, John Beldock and Christian Meekma finish 1-2-3 by a scant 3.5-second differential. Meekma took Sunday’s contest by a “huge” 1.005 second margin, with 0.631 seconds separating the 2-3-4 finishers.

Kevin Rammer (1V, 1982 Honda CB650SC), William Brint (118, 1979 Honda CBX)

Gen Superbike 2, with Eric Burrell following and Jeff Nelson only a second plus behind. Burrell and Nelson swapped spots on Sunday, with Akaydin happy enough to stay put at first, again. Alex McLean again cleaned up, this time in Race 6 - 350 GP, with the venerable Dave Roper following, with Tim Joyce bringing up the rear, meaning 3rd place. Sunday was the same, with a minuscule 0.209 seconds of daylight between Roper and Joyce.

Saturday’s Race 7-Battle of Twins 1 race saw the next best thing to a photo finish with a mere 2.3 seconds separating first place finisher Paul Canale, Scott Billings and Brian Larrabure. The Sunday contest featured Larrabure moving up to first at the expense of Canale and Prust, in that order.

Also in Race 10, the Next Gen Superbike Lightweight contest saw Harry Vanderlinden get beat by 0.004 seconds on Saturday by a hard-charging David Wallace. But Vanderlinden won Sunday’s race, topping Keith Powell and Monty Stauffer, who had only 0.38 seconds separating them. The Saturday Race 12 - Formula Thunder contest ended with 0.69 seconds splitting Israel Gillette and Christian Meekma in second and third place, respectfully. John Beldock took a comfortable first. Honorable mentions to Arnold Hastings, whose

Jonas Stein saw checkers again, this time in Race 6 - Formula 125. A mere 3.4 seconds behind, Tim Terrell edged Randy Knoop by less than 0.2 seconds. Success came again on Sunday for Stein, with John Scales taking second and Terrell scoring third. Once again, Christopher Akaydin made a beeline for Saturday’s checkers, this time by a 12-second margin over Jeff Nelson, with Robert Shaudel rounding out the podium in Race 7 - Next Gen Superbike 3. Akaydin had to fight for it on Sunday, holding off Eric Burrell by 0.580 seconds.

KTM missed out on a podium by 0.049 seconds. His fourth place turned into second place on Sunday. Beldock won again, with a mere 1.653 seconds between him, Hastings, and Robb Weins. Race 12 featured more fun. Battle of Twins 2 was a Saturday treat, with less than a second separating Clint Austin from winner Tony Prust. Prust generously returned the gift on Sunday, giving up a 0.225-second margin to Austin, who took Sunday’s first place. Lastly, Race 13 - Next Gen Superbike packed first and second into a 0.452-second difference, with Scott Billings getting the better of Eric Bozell. Second place proved inspirational for Bozell, who decided to try first place on Sunday. A razorthin 0.061 second differential was the difference.

REPEAT OFFENDERS Winning again is twice as nice. It’s not easy to have a target on your back on Sunday, but a number of riders saw double on the podium. Mitch Skaggs’ Yamaha SR500 took the Saturday Race 1 - Novice Production Lightweight race, along with Sunday’s. Alex McLean took his usual honors aboard his 1937 Norton Manx to win Saturday and Sunday checkers in the Pre-1940 class. Second place was the toughest challenge in Race 3 Sound of Singles 2, as

Steve Alexander topped third-place finisher Adrian Jasso by less than a second. Ralph Staropoli almost had time to crack a cold one with 10+ seconds on everybody. On Sunday, he definitely had time to find a beverage with the rest of the pack arriving some 31 and 35 seconds later, respectively. In Race 4 - Next Gen Superbike Middleweight, Harry Vanderlinden walked away with first place, with Bill Howard besting William Hegerty by 13 seconds for runner-up. The Sunday contest was the model of consistency, with an identical podium.

Kevin Rammer used the Race 4 Vintage Superbike Middleweight contest to put 19+ seconds between him and second-place finisher John Blike, with Alexander Cook finishing off the podium. They lined up and did it again on Sunday with the same outcome, with Blike shaving the margin down to 12.9 seconds. Race 4 - BEARS saw Stan Keyes best Alan Feinman and Paul Eppley, with final entrant Herb Haigh closing out Saturday’s festivities. Sunday’s race grew by one Herb Haigh, who edged out Eppley for third place. Race 5 – Sound of Singles 3 featured the familiar Ralph Staropoli leading the way to the checker with Adrian Jasso and Dave Frick close behind. Staropoli repeated on Sunday, with Frick improving to second and Frank Guadagnino bringing up third. Race 6 - Sportsman 350 saw Rob Hall run away with first, but the best finish came from David Miller beating Eric Cook by less than 0.2 seconds to snatch second place. Sunday was similar, with Cook reclaiming second place by a mere 0.456 seconds over Jack Mattlin. Race 6 saw Jim Eich took the Vintage Superbike Lightweight checker over the only other racer, David Evans. And to prove it wasn’t a fluke, they repeated things on Sunday. The opening Race 7 - Motard contest had Steve Alexander taking top honors, with Andrew Berkley second and CMP rookie Stephen Pettinger third on a borrowed Honda 450R. Said bike grenaded at the start of Sunday’s race, so Noel Korowin was the beneficiary of the final podium slot. A healthy 13-car field lined up on Saturday for everybody’s favorite – Sidecars. The opening contest saw Peter Essaff and Crown, J. take the top spot, some 13 seconds faster than Tony Doukas and Doukas, L., and some 20 seconds better than Frank Riolo and Stefaniuk, W. Sunday shook out the same, with Tim Joyce and Schuelke, R. taking 3rd. In Race 10, Peter Nicolosi had Formula Lightning Extreme all to himself, turning in a respectable best lap of 1:46, same as on Sunday. Race 11 - Classic Sixties saw Alex McLean cruise to first over Patrick McGraw on Saturday, while Jake MAY 2022

Call it Groundhog Day, they did it all over again on Sunday, just the same. Colton Roberts sweated out a 0.6-second victory over Kevin Dinsmoor in Saturday’s Race 11 Formula 250 race. Roberts must have decided on a less stressful race strategy on Sunday, as he stretched the winning differential to 9.376 seconds. Saturday‘s Race 11 250 GP contest featured a dominant win by Dave Roper over Craig Light and Stuart Sanders. Roper repeated on Sunday, this time besting John Scales and Mark Shaver, 1-2.

it twice, Watts repeated the feat on Sunday, laps and all. Saturday’s Race 13 Sound of Singles 1 was won by Tim O’Connor, while Sportsman 750 went to Jeff Hargis and Formula 750 went to Kenny Cummings. Sunday saw Hargis repeat his winning ways, while Dan Sokolich bested Mark Morrow’s rebuilt RD400 in Formula 750. Saturday’s Sound of Thunder 3 race was close, with David Vaughn taking a 0.597 second margin of victory over John MacArthur. McArthur shrank the difference in Vaughn’s repeat win to 0.477 seconds on Sunday, Brian Fairchild taking third.

Kevin Dinsmoor (304, 1976 Honda CB550), Jim Barker (339, 1997 Yamaha MZ Skorpion)

650cc Kawasaki dominated a field of diverse classic superbikes during the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2022 Bridgestone Tires American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) National Historic Cup Road Racing Series at Carolina Motorsports Park near Kershaw, South Carolina on March 19 and 20. Jeremy Maddrill, from Stiger, Illinois, in a replay of the Roebling Road event, won both rounds of the 2022 Vintage Cup on his 1979 Kawasaki KZ 650. The Vintage Cup, sponsored by RoadracingWorld.com, highlights the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class, and was featured on both

Saturday and Sunday of the Carolina Motorsports Park event. “We had two days of spectacular weather providing us the opportunity to use our machinery to the limit. The interest in the Vintage Cup continues to grow as we see additional iron on the grid for each event, bringing the competition to another level,” said Brian Larrabure, 2022 Chair of the AHRMA Board of Trustees. Saturday’s race saw Maddrill clearing turn one first, taking and keeping the lead through the checkered flag. Will Brint from Mount Airy, Georgia riding a 1979 Honda CBX and Kevin Rammer from Newnan, Georgia, on a 1982 Honda CB650SC battled for the other two steps on the podium with Brint ultimately taking second.

Just off Saturday’s podium was parade of both Japanese and European superbikes. Alan Perry on a 1982 Suzuki Katana 1000S from East Providence, Rhode Island was fourth, Dominik Goertz riding a 1982 Moto Guzzi 1100 from Fort Myers, Florida in fifth, Matt Esterline on a 1977 Honda CB750F from Portage, Maine in Sixth, Russell Jordon on a 1982 Honda CB900F from Williamsburg, Ohio in Seventh, Wes Burden riding a 1977 BMW R100 from Atlanta Georgia in eighth, and Alexander Cook racing a 1979 Moto Guzzi Le Mans, from Dublin, Ohio in ninth position. On Sunday, Maddrill made a shifting error on the entrance to turn one leaving him in fourth position going into turn two behind Brint, Rammer and Perry, in that order. By the

halfway point, Maddrill had worked his way through to the lead, keeping it for victory at the checkered flag. Brint suffered a mechanical issue on lap two forcing him to retire, and Rammer, unchallenged completed the race in second, with Esterline, rounding out the podium. The balance of the results had Jordan in fourth, Goertz in fifth, Cook in sixth, Burden seventh, Brint eighth, and Perry in ninth. The 2022 Vintage Cup Trophy will be awarded to the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class winner at select events including High Plains Raceway, Thunderhill Raceway Park, Heartland Motorsports Park, New Jersey Motorsports Park, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Ridge Motorsports Park and Barber Motorsports Park. Texas Vintage Grand Prix WORDS: ALBERT NEWMANN PHOTOS: BOBBY HEDGE, KENNY LAU - AWESOME SHOTS The first pitch of the Southcentral Regional Motocross and Cross Country season was a hit. The early season races are always unpredictable, from the weather to the rider turnout, but this weekend, the weather was perfect. With almost two hundred entries, the outlook for the 2022 season of off-road racing is going to be great. All four states in the region had representation as well as a Californian to boot. Our experiment of executing the cross country race in the afternoon was well received along with a nice cross-over of motocross racers participating. As Trampas Parker told everyone in the rider’s meeting, cross country will improve motocross skills. In my opinion, the seat time alone automatically makes you more physically prepared. 30

Race 1 of our Vintage Motocross program Saturday morning was one of the best of the weekend. Featured early in the line-up were the 50 and 60 Intermediates and Experts. Bubba Dennis and his reliable Maico had a great start, putting him into the lead over a talented group that included Trampas Parker, Keith Klump, Eddie Parks, and more. On lap three, Trampas made his move into the lead. However, the new and improved Keith Klump made the pass on the final lap for the win. Rodney Reed took the overall in the 50 Plus Intermediates, Keith Klump took the Expert 50 Plus win, Sean Knaack won the 60 Plus Intermediate, and Bubba Dennis won the 60 Plus Expert class. The second race of the day was our Novice gate, which notably AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

showcased the growth of new AHRMA members over the last year. Sherri Parker edged out Linda Dowell for the Women’s Novice class, and it was Richard Weber who won the 60 Plus Novice class. Newcomer Jeff Birch put in a great ride as did John Matthewson with the highlight of Johnny Perry taking third place and his first trophy in his vintage career! Typically, AHRMA racing dads will pull their kids in to participate with us, but in this race, I realized one of our youngsters pulled his father into racing. It was great to see Gary Sinclair make his debut on a BSA, so thank you Steve Sinclair for bringing Pops out for some vintage fun! Speaking of youngsters racing with us, Race 5 featured the Sportsman 500 Expert class, pitting Tyler Reed, MAY 2022

Travis Shackelford, and Steve Sinclair in the same class. Race 1 saw Travis take a spill early on and the ride to move back up was one of the best we have seen. It was a little short of catching up to the extremely fast Tyler Reed, though extremely captivating for the crowd. Reed went 1-1 for the overall, and a smooth Ray MacFarland won the Open Age Intermediate, with Jon Anderson winning the Sportsman 500 Intermediate. New rides are always something many of us look forward to. The Sportsman 125 class featured a nice presentation this year as Jason Elder made his Vintage MX debut on a beautiful and very crisp sounding 1974 Yamaha YZ 125. Alan Steele showcased another stellar build with a 1975 Kawasaki KX125, and Taylor Blackwood put his 1974 Honda CR125 on the track for the first time. Elder was amazingly fast and sent notice to the national scene that he will be in contention this year. Steele and Blackwood had some bugs to work out, but seeing a new crop of vintage 125’s is great news for both the region and the national circuit. Elder won the Expert group and it was Mike Aymond winning the Intermediate 125 class.

Day one of the motocross program was excellent. The track had several new features and the buzz through the pits was how the track was hands down the best yet at the Huffman Farm. With rain earlier in the week, the worry of how the track would shape up disappeared; the prep was perfect and highlighted the various lines of the course. With more than enough time for everyone to get lunch and fluids, it was time for some cross country racing. For the regionals this year,

only one race is being run. This means that racers are only able to race a single class. This would be the first time the course at Huffman farms was run backward, and I would have to say it was a smash hit with the racers. The course was exceptionally clean and going in reverse for many obstacles was a new challenge. The highlight of race day was watching Jo-Boy White, Trampas Parker, and Hoot Parker get after it. As mentioned earlier we had a high number of new racers at

this event which was extremely exciting for the region. This cross country racing at our regionals seems like we have been able to create a buzz! Winners on the day included Logan Holekamp winning the large line of Post Vintage 200 Intermediates; Justin Buttrill won the Post Vintage Open Intermediate, Joel White took the checkers for the Pre-Modern Expert class, Bubba Dennis edged out the extremely fast Mark Andrews and Eddie Parks in a barn burner for the Post Vintage 60 Plus Expert. With nearly sixty entries, all had a great time on this clean course. Wonderful job by the team at Donie to prepare the trails and create space for plenty of passing opportunities. Sunday was Post Vintage Motocross racing, bringing in eighty-eight entries as well as several new AHRMA members. After Heith Parker decimated the first race of the day, race 2 featured a new father-son combination of Eric Hagler and Hayden Hagler amongst a large field of novices and newcomers! Making the switch from modern motocross to Post Vintage, it was Kindale Pittman edging out Philip Prinz and Michael Boudreaux in the 40 Novice class. Doug Williams was the winner in the 60 Plus Novice group over Tom O’Kelly and Buddy Lavin. Linda Dowell won the women’s class and the battle of Ultima Novices had Chris Thomas over the Huntington Beach, California native Hayden Hagler, and Eric Hagler. The father-son combo, riding for RCG Lifestyles, had the nicest XR 200 Honda’s of the weekend! Lots of new and friendly faces in the AHRMA family. 32

Race 4 featured two of the fastest Louisiana AHRMA racers with Heith Parker and Jo-Boy White lining up in the 40 Plus Expert class. In each moto, the racing started off tight, but the speed displayed by Parker was unbeatable. Nobody is quite sure what blend of race gas was in Parker’s 1982 Yamaha YZ 125, but he rode like white lightning. In the same race, it was Bob Hodge returning to the race scene and he looked great in his win over the improving Scott Turk. Tim Hardesteen also put in a great ride to win the Ultima 500 Intermediate class. Race 5 was another competitive race on the day as an exceptionally large Grand Prix Novice group lined up. Adrian Blackmon looked like he was in race shape as he put distance between him and the other novices to win the class over Doug Williams, Ben Twiner, and Travis Johnson. Chris Dublin beat out the pride of Orange, Texas, Bobby Guilbeau, in the 70 Plus Expert. Race 8 had a combination of various Ultima classes, but notably a large group of Honda four strokes in the Ultima 4-Stroke Intermediate class. Ben Brown and his behemoth big bore Honda rode extremely well to fend off the fast group for the win. Jo-Boy White won the Ultima 500

Expert and the much slim downed Gary Alsop Sr looked fantastic in the Ultima 250 Expert class. Billy Murphy was victorious over Jon Anderson in the Ultima 125 Intermediate class and Sheila Monk won the Ultima 250 Intermediates. The final race of the day was a various group of Next Gen racers led by Hoot Parker winning the 50 Plus Experts; Niels Jensen looked sharp in his win over John Pollard in the 50 Plus Intermediate class. It was an outstanding weekend of racing and camaraderie for the season’s start. How often do you have two AMA Hall of Famers at a regional race to provide church service? Trampas Parker led a Saturday worship under the beautiful late afternoon Texas sun and Steve Wise led the attendees Sunday morning prior to racing. All the volunteers and staff did an outstanding job, and we were honored by the Combat Veterans group of Bryan/College Station, Texas, who flagged the entire weekend for us. They were an excellent group of guys to talk to and hang out with. Looking forward to our next event on April 30 and May 1 in Grand Cane, Louisiana, at Desoto Motorsport Park.

BURROWS RANCH RACE WEEKEND

2022 BRIDGESTONE TIRES AHRMA NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY & VINTAGE/POST-VINTAGE MOTOCROSS SERIES 2022 REDWOOD ENGINEERING AHRMA NATIONAL VINTAGE TRIALS SERIES WORDS & PHOTOS: KATE JORGENSON As the pandemic becomes an endemic, the gear heads prepared their motorcycles and gear for the first AHRMA national on the West Coast. On the weekend of March 19-20, Burrows Ranch in Chrome, California, was a wonderful weekend full of racing, catching up with old friends, making new friends, and competition in some crazy weather!

Saturday was a brisk, rainy day for the trials and the cross country; 55 trials riders braved the weather to slip and slide on the treacherous rocks, slimy grass, and mud. The biggest classes of the day were the Modern Classic Intermediate and the Modern Classic Novice. In the Intermediate class, Sidney Mocke came in third with 29 points, Willy

One lap to go in race 4 with Bart Bast (87p) just a bikes length ahead of Wes Poole (19x).

Krakauer came in second with 21 points, and Clay Dawley won the class with 14 points. For the Novice class, Emmy Poole came in third place with 12 points, Cole Dietrich earned 9 points and second place, and Jeff Crawford clinched first place with 3 points. Although the Modern Classic Expert class had only four riders, the competition was fierce! In fourth place with a total of 87 points was Jacob Ritorto, Stephen Newell earned third place with a score of 86 points, Craig Menghini competed in this class for the first time and earned 66 points and second place. Earning first place and edging out his brother with a total of 33 points was Grant Menghini. Other results for the day included: Rob Poole in the Premier Heavyweight Expert earning 22 points and sliding past the 26 points of Kelly Shane. Mike Stone earned first place with a total of 33 points in the Premier Heavyweight Intermediate class. Robert Bellicitti earned three points and cleaned his entire third

loop in the Premier Lightweight Expert class. Bryan Wenzel received 15 points and first place in the Premier Lightweight Intermediate. Stuart Meislin took first place with a total of 16 points in the Premier Lightweight Novice class. Jeff Bushey grabbed first in the Classic Expert class with a total of 29 points. In the Classic Novice class Greg Houchin gripped hold of 27 points and first place. Wes Poole, although, he did a summersault on his bike, came out on top with first in the Modern Classic Masters consistently scoring 7 points in each loop. In the Modern Twin Shock Intermediate Michael Allison earned 45 points. Scott Stewart received 39 points in the Air Cooled Mono Masters. Scott Valley earned first place in the Beginner class with a total of one point, he had the fewest points all day.

Saturday afternoon, the vintage cross country and post vintage cross country races took place. The course included tight single-track grassy terrain, roosted sticky mud, and a variety of elevation changes. The vintage cross country had 45 entries. Brad Wilson (280) grabbed the holeshot. Wes Poole (19X) on his BSA took first place overall and in the Sportsman Open Expert class, completing four laps in 59 minutes. Mid-race, Poole discovered he had a broken carburetor, forcing him to take a pit stop during his fourth lap; thankfully, his mechanical skills came in handy, and he only lost one minute in the process! After crossing the finish line, he saw a fellow rider coming towards the last turn of the race. Mike Atkins (3V) was having bike problems of his own; Wes ran over and helped Atkins through the checkered flag with another bike attempting to pass the two of them pushing. It sure made for an exciting finish, and it entertained the crowd watching the race. Rob Burkhard (W34) earned second place overall on his KTM and first place in his class, the Sportsman Open Intermediate. Wilson (280) earned third place overall by a mere two minutes and taking first place in the Vintage 50 Expert class on his Honda.

Scott Stewart in Section 8

The largest class was the Vintage 60+ Expert. The top three riders completed four laps; the difference between first and third was only three minutes. In third place and finishing MAY 2022

at one hour and 14 minutes was Jim Jenkins (410) on a CZ. In second place Kelly Shane (74Q) on a BSA had a time of one hour 13 minutes. Jeff Bushey (B60) took first place on his Penton with a time of one hour and 11 minutes. Finally, blue sky appeared and the sun came out just in time for the last event of the day, the post vintage cross country. There were 29 racers in the post vintage event. As the start gun fired, in no time at all, Duke Dowell (H2) got the holeshot. The top five riders finished four laps within ten minutes of each other. In first place with a time of 54 minutes was Joe Haney (90Z) on a Honda. In second place with a total time 1:01:39 was Jeff Naff (496) on a Husky. Jim Buckalew (5T) came in third with a time of 1:01:45. Fourth place went to Sidney Mocke (S97) with a time of 1:01:57 he was riding a Yamaha. Rounding out the top five, riding a Maico was Marc Audiffred (22A) with a time of 1:04:42. These two cross country races could not have happened without Jeff Burrows, Jeff Bushey, and Wayne

Hawes who laid out the course, Bindi Bushey and Monica Vieira who lap checked the event. Along the course, at the checkpoint was Zane Amaro and his crew. Thank you for your hard work. On Sunday, the grass was wet, the sun was shining, and the wind was blowing. There were 241 riders entered into 16 races for the day. Although AHRMA has been racing at Burrows Ranch for several years, the track was in a new location on the farm and was enjoyed by everyone. This year’s track consisted of several sweeping turns, typical of a normal grass track, but with some unorthodox off-camber jumps and creek bed sections added in. The largest class of the day was Race 3 with 21 riders, featuring the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class. The top three riders all hailed from California: Gary Arnold (385) finished first, second place went to Charles Haines (35h), and Allen Niehues (206y) rounded out the podium in third. Another large class was race 12 featuring the Vintage 60+ Experts. Pat Brown (83y) smoked his way to

victory! Second place went to Robert Bellicitti (59f). Duke Dowell (h2) took third. Many volunteers helped make the motocross a success. Robert Trono, Mark Baer, and Bob Lisey served as tech inspectors. Pete Voermans helped flag the start/finish line; Bindi Bushey, Victoria Raiburn, and Judy Jorgenson helped with lap checking. Charlie Poole ran the lap checker sheets to the motorhome; Mike Houde, Jeff Bushey, and Cliff Mee were in charge of the start gate. Ellen Voermans and Monica Vieira created the race order and helped tabulate the final results; Rob and Debbie Poole designed the new track and helped facilitate the entire weekend. Special shoutout to Maggie Shane, Kelly Shane, Ellen Voermans, Jeff Bushey, Rob and Debbie Poole, Becky Hayes (National Cross Country Coordinator) and Tony Paul (Off-Road Director) for gathering the paper results and processing them to make them available for everyone! These events cannot happen without the helpful hands of everyone working together.

Southwest Region Update WORDS: TERRY MCPHILLIPS PHOTOS: PAULY CHAMBERS

For a lot of AHRMA Regions, January through April is a time to stay inside, work on your bikes and get ready for race season. Not so in the Southwest Region. We need to have our bikes ready in January for a season start in early February. That’s the way it went this year. February 13, 2022, brought our first regional race. It was held in Motoland MX Park and was hosted by the American Vintage Dirt Riders Association (AVDRA). Motoland’s new owners have been working with Dave Boydstun (AVDRA) to make their vet track layout vintage-friendly. Some of the highlights included: Al Anderberg taking the Premier 500 expert class as he went 1-1 for the overall win as well as winning the Vintage 60+ Expert class. Gerard Hayes went 1-1 in Vintage Open Age Expert and 50+ Expert classes. Gene Mendes took the Vintage 70+ Intermediate Class and Cliff Fredericks went 1-1 in the Vintage 500 Intermediate class. March brought the Duel in the Desert to Motoland. This is an AHRMA National Race hosted by AVDRA. There was a great turnout from 38

AHRMA for this race, and always good competition anytime AVDRA and AHRMA get together. The race of the day pitted Fred Hoess against Jim Anderson in the PV 50+ expert class. This was some absolutely fantastic racing with Fred Hoess taking the win by going 2-1 in front of Jim Anderson’s 1-2. Also in March, AHRMA SW members attended the first annual British Invasion Race at Lake Havasu, AZ. This race is held in conjunction with the Annual Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet. Hosted by CalVMX, this track is very picturesque as it is located right on the river in the middle of the tourist district by the London Bridge. It’s a great location that should allow this race to grow into a large, well-attended event. Trey Jorski put on quite a show at this event and ran away with the Post Vintage 60+ expert class. If you weren’t able to make it out this year, you definitely won’t want to miss this race in 2023! April saw the Southwest Region struggling to complete the requirements to run the National event scheduled for Cahuilla AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

Creek MX. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the track at Cahuilla Creek MX was not available and the AHRMA Southwest team struggled to find a place worthy of an AHRMA National. We were finally able to get permission to race at the Old Chaney Ranch in Warner Springs, CA. This ranch was once owned by the actor Lon Chaney (hence the name). It was funny hearing people ask if this was Dick Chaney’s Ranch. (It wasn’t, but you can imagine the comments!) This location is outstanding for a vintage race! Owners Ed and Michele Picozzi could not have been more gracious or more supportive in making this event happen. The entire event, including massaging the tracks for cross country, trials, and motocross was completed in a mere three weeks. Ed spent most of those weeks moving dirt to make sure everything was vintage-friendly for both cross country and motocross. Trampas and Sheri Parker came out early and helped Ed make sure everything was in tip-top shape! If you missed this event, you missed a great one!

MAY 2022

The trials event was held Saturday morning. Trials Master Morgan Proffit put together a challenging but fun trials loop. It had everything from rocks to trees and elevation changes as challenges. Bob Belliicitti topped the Premier Lightweight class while Bret Botzong topped off the Intermediate Modern Classic class. The cross country course was approximately five miles long with lots of elevation changes and some absolutely beautiful views. The layout was done by Ed, Pat Wilkening, and Trampas Parker, and even ran around the property’s haunted house. Ed did an extraordinary amount of work over the three weeks to make this a great course! Everyone seemed to find it challenging but fun. In the vintage race, Pauly Chambers took top honors, followed by Trampas Parker and Greg Tomlinson. In Post Vintage, Trampas Parker topped the list followed by Shaun Hamer and Jeff Hughes. In both races, you could always tell when Bob Lisey came by on his Honda, with him yelling “271!” (his race number) each time he came past the score keepers!

no water truck needed. Talk about being prepared!

the expert class! Wonder who else is being moved up?

The racing was great on this track. In the second moto of race 7, vintage 50+ Intermediate rider Kenny Safford led for about three laps. He was then passed decisively in the first turn. No shame on this one though, it’s hard to be upset when World Champion Trampas Parker passes you.

All in all, it’s been a great first quarter for the Southwest Region. The racing has been good and the number of people who have volunteered and helped out has been outstanding. Special thanks go to Morgan Proffitt (Trials Master), Pat Wilkening (Cross Country), Luke Sayer (AHRMA Trustee), and many others that have made this first quarter a success. Special thanks go to Pete and Loretta Hughes for manning the gate at Chaney Ranch the entire weekend of the Chaney Ranch National. We couldn’t have done it without you!

After coming off the track after the first moto in the Classic 500 Intermediate class, Off-Road Director Tony Paul walked over to Cliff Fredericks and handed him a shiny new black stripe to put on his helmet. Yup, it was time for Cliff to move to

Trampas Parker (13) on his Bultaco 200 racing cross country at Chaney Ranch

The end of the day Saturday saw some great bench racing as the Southwest Region provided hot dogs and chili to all! This was a pot luck that everyone was invited to attend. Sunday found the motocross track ready and waiting for the competitors. Dust wasn’t a problem since the track had massive water hoses available all around the track,
