This year is going to be a busy one, with so many events on the schedule. I’m hoping to make it out to some of the races local to me, so keep an eye out for some short, purple hair sitting trackside with a camera.

In this issue, we get a lot of awesome content from a lot of different disciplines. I’ve been working to get more coverage, especially non-race report content, to help showcase our racers, volunteers, bikes, disciplines, and the AHRMA atmosphere even more, and I’m very excited to be able to share them in upcoming issues.

As you’ve heard our race directors say numerous times, this organization is fueled by volunteers, and the AHRMA MAG is no different. You don’t need to be a journalist to offer a great storyI’ve been to races and talked with members, and I KNOW that you guys have some great ones to tell. I also know that the idea of sitting down to write things out can be daunting.

Reach out to me and let me know you have something you’d like to share, and we’ll figure out how to get it on paper.

ahrmamag@ahrma.org

see you on the track!

If you follow modern motorsports, you most likely have heard the recent news that Liberty Media has acquired a majority stake in Dorna Sport. Since 1992, Dorna has been the exclusive holder of all commercial and television rights relating to MotoGP, and since 2013 the Superbike World Championship. Dorna also participates in the management and marketing of other motorsports properties, including the Spanish Road Racing Championship (CEV), the British Superbike Championship (BSB) and the Trials World Championships (Indoor and Outdoor). Forbes magazine has placed Liberty Media at the top of its list of most valuable sports franchises, valuing the sports conglomerate at $18.22 billion USD. Liberty Media’s vast empire encompasses a range of sportsrelated ventures, including Formula 1, F1 Arcade, and the Drone Racing League, showcasing the company’s expansive reach within the sports industry. Now you can add MotoGP, World Superbike, and the other Dorna properties to the ever-expanding Liberty Media portfolio.

So, what does this mean for AHRMA and vintage motorcycle racing? They say a rising tide lifts all boats, and Liberty Media certainly sees both value and opportunity in Dorna and motorcycle racing worldwide. Specifically, Liberty Media is interested in expanding the MotoGP presence in North America. “MotoGP is an exciting sport, we do not want to change it, but rather we want to show the world how exciting it is,”

The Business of Motorsport

says Greg Maffei, Liberty Media CEO. Well, we all know how exciting motorcycle racing is, but is the rest of the world ready to embrace our sport? I certainly hope so. With any sport, there is always interest in the history of how it came to be, and AHRMA is the perfect place to showcase its origins. Although it may seem like most of the top MotoGP racers today are from Spain and Italy, there are still more individual American champions than any other nation (7), and the USA is third among all-time premier class championships.

AHRMA is in a unique position to capitalize on this new exposure to

the sport. Our nearly 3,000 members own and campaign a unique collection of machines across all motorcycle racing disciplines. We have the technical expertise to keep them running and racing, and we are not afraid to “ride ‘em and don’t hide ‘em”. So, grab a friend or neighbor and show them what they are missing. Sign them up and get them in the pits and on the track.

What is YOUR Accountability Path?

First, let’s look at the definition of accountability from Webster’s Dictionary: “the obligation or willingness to accept responsibility for one’s actions.” But how does one push themselves to have accountability? Especially on a race weekend. Accountability leads to success and safety.

Personally, I use the following words to keep me motivated and on my path.

• Preparation

• Ritual

• Determination

• Focus

• Commitment

• Trust

In all things I do I have found that if I am not prepared my ritual will fall apart. One constant ritual for me is to always start packing 3 days out from the race weekend. I never know if work, family, or a life event may take me off course so by preparing a few days early it keeps me calm and focused and then I inherently feel more prepared.

When I’m racing, I’m very ritualistic as to when I suit up, put the helmet and gloves on, stop talking with others, all the way to when I take that last drink of water. Finally, I pat my tank and swing my leg over the bike and give myself a “You Got This!” out loud inside my helmet. This all may sound funny, but it sets me up for determination to do the very best that I can.

All these race rituals now apply to being a Road Race Director as

well. If I did not have determination, I would not be able to quickly make decisions. I lean on determination to stay focused and be ready for the next challenge.

Challenges… Take that tricky corner that we all might have trouble with. For me I pull on determination to get better each time I go through. Determination and accountability can be applied to anything you are doing in life. I set my goal and I focus on what the issue is. Is it in my head, with my bike or both? Now I must commit to making a change and trust that not only I have made the right decision, but that the bike can also accomplish the change. I tell myself once again- “You Got This!” I strongly believe that staying positive is another key to success!

ROAD RACING

BY

I share all of this to hopefully challenge you to start thinking about your accountability path so that you can start to achieve all of your goals whether on track or off.

I’ll end with this quote from Mario Andretti:

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”

Until next time!

Project Updates

We’ve been working on a number of projects since the beginning of the year. Here’s the current status of things that we are working on:

RACE NUMBERS – The first phase of the race number project is complete. We have combined the Next Gen Motocross (NGMX) and Post Vintage Motocross (PVMX) tables. This has allowed us to create a single event for each off-road weekend in MSR. You will notice that you now have the ability to sign up for all disciplines in a single registration! This saves you, our member, time and money as you now only get charged a single $2.00 processing fee for registering multiple disciplines on a single weekend. We are also now able to handle the appropriate discount for NGMX and PVMX by combining them into a single discipline, registrationwise.

This, however, is only phase one. Phase two has been started as well. We are cleaning up all the databases to adhere to the race number rules that were put out in July of 2022. We are currently working through the numbers with disallowed items in them and contacting folks to get them updated.

If you want to get a head start (if you know you will need to change), here’s what you need to do:

OFF-ROAD

Go to the contact page on the AHRMA website (Contact – Contact AHRMA) and in the topic drop down, select Off Road Race Number Request. This will expand the form. Fill it out, putting in three numbers that you would prefer (the number requirements will be displayed when you selected Off Road Race Number Request in the Topic). Usually, it’s best to select a two digit and one alpha character. If we can, we will give you a number in the order requested if they are available.

Let us know all disciplines you plan on riding as well.

If the numbers you request are not available, we will give you a call or email to help you find one that is.

Please keep in mind that if you let your membership lapse for more than six months, you will be losing your number as it will be thrown back into the available number pool.

BY SHARON BEAN

TECH INSPECTION – The tech inspection team is now meeting monthly to see what we can do to standardize the Tech Inspection process and train more people to work tech. Remember that Tech is required before getting on the track! We are now checking to see that each rider has been to Tech before going on the track!

CROSS COUNTRY – We are working hard to get the processes in place to make Cross Country events run smoother. Yes, there have been some hiccups, but we are diligently working to overcome the issues that have happened (especially scoring issues that we had at the beginning of the season). Rest assured that we are aware of the problems and are working to see that they are permanently addressed.

If you are interested or concerned with any of these (or other) subjects, feel free to contact me to see what you can do to help make things better. There is a lot of work to be done, and we never have enough people to do it all! I can promise you that we will do what we can to find you a place to contribute! Remember that AHRMA is heavily dependent on volunteers! Come join us!

Have Fun, Be Safe, and Go Fast!

CORNER TURNING THE

The theme this year for AHRMA seems to be safety, and Dirt Track has made several changes to focus on safety and fun, many of which were covered in the April issue of the AHRMA MAG. Now that we are a few races into the 2024 season, I wanted to report back on how these changes have been received and some initial results.

One of the biggest changes was gridding. In 2024, we moved to four wide per row after seeing how it has worked at the Pro level. Previously, the width of the track would determine how many bikes were on each row and there could be anywhere from six to ten wide per row for races. More people per row resulted in more crashes in turn one off the start. This is one of the most dangerous places and times to go down on a flat track. The risk of secondary collision from riders behind the downed racer is at its highest and these collisions often result in serious injury or worse.

Moving to four racers per row has significantly decreased the risk of riders going down in turn one off the start and has been highly welcomed from racers. The only downfall we have come across is starting position in heat races. Previously with six to ten riders per row we were able to run heat races with everyone getting a front row start. Finish position in the heat race determines starting position in the main event. As always, starting the main on the front row gives you the best shot at victory and the same can be said in the heats. However, now we cannot guarantee a front row start for heat races. To continue to make the heat races as fair as possible, heat grid position will be picked at random. In just the first two events of the year, we have seen many racers come from the second row or even the third row to finish top three or win. We have also seen less jump starts which I contribute to the grid changes. As the season goes on we will continue to monitor changes and track what works and how to improve what does not.

AHRMA members invest a lot of money in their sport. In addition to owning 19 motorcycles, the average member spends over $10,000 each year on new and used motorcycles, parts, accessories, publications, race fuel, lubricants, safety gear, tools and other related items. In other words, the association's members represent nearly $60 million in spending power!

Speaking of changes, 2024 rule proposals are underway with a deadline of May 15. I encourage all members who have suggestions for class rules changes, adding classes, or removing classes to reach out to the race committees and start conversations. This can help refine rules proposals and increase the chances of getting the proposal approved. If there are any members who would like to see changes in dirt track rules or classes, please reach out to me and let’s see how we can continue to make AHRMA Dirt Track more inclusive.

Bikes from the Golden Age of GP Racing Featured in 2025 AHRMA Vintage Cup

AGolden Age of Grand Prix motorcycle racing is coming to tracks across the country during 2025.

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association’s (AHRMA) 2025 Vintage Cup will highlight the 500 Premier class which was AHRMA’s first and undoubtedly the most historically significant post-war racing series.

Sponsored by Hagerty Insurance, Roadracingworld.com, and NYC Norton (nycnorton.com), AHRMA’s 2025 Vintage Cup features the 500 Premier class which includes any fully kitted 500cc OHV/OHC or 750cc sidevalve fourstroke machine built before December 31, 1968.

“When the vintage cup concept was presented to me several years ago, the 500 Premier class was the first thing on my mind that we should feature as these motorcycles were the pinnacle of grand prix racing performance and the bikes nearest and dearest to my heart,” said Kenny Cummings of NYC Norton, 2025 Vintage Cup sponsor.

“Many of these bikes have been put away for years, becoming ornaments in people’s homes and the whole intent of this class was to bring these bikes out of retirement to the national stage with heavy competition.” Cummings said. “I couldn’t be happier to see these beautiful machines racing in anger at some of the greatest racetracks in the country. NYC Norton has been a proud sponsor of this class for years and is happy that AHRMA is hosting it yet again, for the Vintage Cup. Let’s bring them out, people!”

Typical AHRMA 500 Premier grids include wide variety motorcycles from Norton Manx, Matchless G50, 500 Triton, Honda, Ducati, Gilero, MV Agusta, and more.

“For a lot of racers and race fans, when you ask them to imagine ‘vintage’ road racers, they think of 500cc bikes from the mid to late ‘60s,” said Greg Tomlinson, 2024 Chair of the AHRMA Board of Trustees. “Unfortunately, those same bikes that stir the imagination aren’t seen or heard much anymore. Fortunately, putting the 2025 Vintage Cup spotlight on them will bring them back to the track.”

“AHRMA continues to do its part providing a series for people to ride historic racebikes on the track, where they can be seen and heard in action. Roadracing World is happy to be involved with the Vintage Cup program in 2025. Go out and have some fun on old bikes!” said John Ulrich, Founder & Editor of Roadracing World.

The Vintage Cup will be highlighted during and after each of the 2025 AHRMA National road races. Added enhancements for the 2025 season include:

• Enhanced trophies throughout the season

• Special awards for series champion

• Articles and photos on Roadracingworld.com to spotlight the class

• Roadracing World print magazine enhanced exposure for AHRMA and 500 Premier

• Discounted race entry fees

• Racer spotlight features in AHRMA MAG

• Class champion on cover of the AHRMA MAG

Motorcycles eligible for AHRMA’s 500 Premier class must have been built before December 31, 1968, or be based on a like design and may have up to a 500cc air-cooled fourstroke engine with overhead valves and cams or a 750cc

sidevalve engine. A list of eligible machines can be found in the AHRMA Handbook in Section 10.2.1 (www.ahrma. org/ahrma-handbook).

The first American to win the Isle of Man TT, Dave Roper, who is also a multi-time AHRMA champion and frequent 500 Premier competitor shared the following: “The 500cc class has been the Premier Class in World Championship road racing since at least the end of WW1 to 2002 when the MotoGP four stroke era was introduced. The Isle of Man TT established the 500cc limit for the Senior Class in 1912 and it continued until 1984. Between the World Wars, there was no formal World Championship and the European Championship was based on a single race which rotated from country to country. Norton dominated in this period with riders Stanley Woods, Freddy Frith, Harold Daniel, ‘Crasher’ White, Wal Handley, and Jimmy Guthrie. Toward the end of this period, BMW and Gilera made inroads into Norton’s dominance.”

After WW2, and with the establishment of the World Championship in 1949, Britain continued to lead with the AJS Porcupine then the Norton Featherbed,” Roper continued. “But, then the Italians took over, first with Gilera and Geoff Duke, then with M.V. and John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, and Phil Reed. In 1975, the two strokes took over, first with Ago on the Yamaha, then the RG 500 Suzuki with Barry Sheene, back to Yamaha with Kenny Roberts, back to Suzuki with Lucchinelli and Uncini, then to Honda with Freddie Spencer and Yamaha with Eddie Lawson. In 1987, Wayne Gardner interrupted a string of American World Champions, with Lawson and Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz following. Australian Mick Doohan followed with five successive World Championships for Honda, Criville giving Honda one more. Suzuki had one year with Kenny Roberts, Jr., then the Valentino Rossi period began on the 500cc two stroke Honda and making the transition into the MotoGP four stroke era.”

500 Premier was one of AHRMA’s inaugural classes and the championship has been won mostly on Matchless G-50 and Norton Manx, but also with a 500 Triton, Honda 450-based machine, and even a 350 Aermacchi.”

Albert Newmann Resigns from AHRMA Board of Trustees

Short Track, ½ Mile, and TT, etc. will count as separate events with regards to points for the DMNVC. A rider competing in two or more different types of dirt track racing over the same weekend can take points for each one.

In addition to the upcoming Lodi, CA weekend, the Athens, Ohio event is an example of this opportunity, as points will be counted for all three events; the Short Track, TT and the ½ Mile.

requesting a refund FOR OFF-ROAD EVENTS

With all the weather we’ve had at the beginning of the season, we thought it would be a good idea to once again publish the Refund Request process and requirements for off-road.

To request a refund, go to the refund request page (Event Refund / Credit Request Form – AHRMA ) and fill it out. Please keep in mind that the following policy applies to refunds:

1. Event refunds or credits will be issued only to riders who have completed an Event Refund/Credit Request Form. The form may be obtained from and returned to registration or tech at an event or submitted online at www.ahrma.org/refund-credit-request-form. Requests for refunds or credits will not be accepted via telephone or email.

2. A rider contacting the AHRMA event registrar up through the day of the event will be refunded/credited the full amount, less a per entry administrative fee ($10 for Road Race, $5 for Off-road and Dirt Track).

A rider filing for refund/credit not more than 14 days after the event will be settled at 50-percent of the total entry. After that time, there will be no refund and no credit. This policy applies to National events, unless noted otherwise on the entry form.

3. If a rider’s machine goes on track the day the request is dated, there shall be no refund/credit for that day. Any following days if applicable are due a refund/ credit.

4. Some events may be deemed no refund/credit by AHRMA.

See Handbook section 4.7.

A couple of things to keep in mind. First, the process listed above only applies to pre-registration for off-road events. Post-entry registration refunds for off-road must be made with the appropriate host (remember, AHRMA does not receive the funds given to the off-road host for post-registration. This means that you have to get with the host to receive a refund for post-registration).

Also, due to the fact that we have other organizations working with us as hosts, off-road refunds are only handled as refunds to your credit card. We do not issue MSR credits for future races (Note: this does not apply to Dirt Track or Road race which does issue credits).

We try to handle refund requests as quickly as we can! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

2024 Dick Mann National Vintage Challenge

Riders Respond to the Challenge! Three More Competitors Join the Fray

Since the last article in the April issue of the AHRMA MAG, three more competitors have signed up for the Dick Mann National Vintage Challenge, bringing the total number of riders to an outstanding 15!

TIM BANKS (184) OWENSBORO, KY

Kentuckian Tim Banks names his Primary Discipline as Cross Country. In 2023, Tim challenged himself and competed in all five AHRMA disciplines and did well. Entering the DMNVC and running against other riders doing the same for this prized Championship appealed to Tim as a perfect way to step things up.

WES POOLE (19X) COLORADO

Vintage Motocross is the Prime Discipline for Wes Poole of Colorado. Wes competed in the second Dick Mann Team Challenge in 2022 as a Trials team member. At that time he noted, “even though he was a quiet person, Dick Mann affected many people, as he did me. Through the Dick Mann Challenge competitions all of us participating, and those following our progress, helps to keep the Dick Mann legend alive and well.”

DAVID ALDANA (13) FAYETTEVILLE, GA

Dave Aldana needs no introduction to most of us, and it’s no surprise that his Primary Discipline is Dirt Track, although he’s pretty well-rounded in the wider off- and on-road disciplines. David knew Dick Mann very well, and honors his memory by having competed in both Dick Mann Team competitions, and now the new Dick Mann National Vintage Challenge this year.

As of this writing, the rider who has been most active and who has accumulated the most points is David Rhodes, primarily a road racer. David has thus far logged in points for each of his four chosen disciplines as required; road race, dirt track, cross country and trials, with 84 points. Second place is held by Tim Banks, garnering 63 points in two

of his four chosen disciplines; cross country and VMX. Third place is currently tied with Bill Gould and Emmy Poole having logged in 52 points each. Bill’s points thus far are in three of his four chosen disciplines; road race, dirt track and trials, while Emmy’s points come from finishes in trials, cross country and VMX.

There is a long season still ahead and many chances for exciting points races! To follow the rider’s progress, view the DMNVC Point Spreadsheet at ahrma.org under Schedules and Results, Challenge Points.

And it’s STILL not too late to get involved. The DMNVC registration deadline is June 30th. To Register, go to: www.ahrma.org/dick-mann-challenge-sign-up-form/

MARCH 23, 2024

TONEY, AL

TSEASON OPENER

he 2024 AHRMA National Vintage Dirt Track Season is under way! Picking up where we left off the 2023 in Toney, Alabama, at Beaver Creek Speedway, the 2024 season started off strong with some great short track actions.

With storms moving through the area Friday evening, the rain threatened the event but Saturday morning brought clear skies and sunshine. Thanks to the free water from the rain, the track prep was ready to begin, and by noon the track was ready to go. After

practice finished up, the groove was about 10 feet wide and gave way from some fantastic heat races.

Bubba Blackwell made his return to racing competition going head to head with Dink Stevens in 50+ Vintage. Stevens would win the heat race but Blackwell would take the checkered flag in the main followed by Jimmy Walker and

Bill Gould. Gould would find the podium in Sportsman 750, taking third behind Stevens who would take second. Richard Brodock would claim victory in Sportsman 750 and Sportsman 250. With a field of twelve in Modern 450, a win was no easy task but William Cato was up to the challenge. Joining Cato on the podium was Kyle Snyder in second and Tyler Chandler in third.

beaver creek speedway

Next, we head to Crossroad Motorplex in Jasper, Florida, but AHRMA Dirt Track will return to Beaver Creek Speedway on September 21 for Round 12 of the 2024 season. This hidden gem is always a favorite for racers and spectators alike and will continue to be on the AHRMA Dirt Track schedule for years to come.

2024 AHRMA Dirt Track VINTAGE CUP

Brian Day would take the win in the 2024 Dirt Track Vintage Cup with Hank Dubois taking a close second. The 2024 Dirt Track Vintage Cup class features Seventies Singles. These machines, like the Yamaha tt500 and Honda XL350, are iconic flat trackers from the late seventies into the early eighties. With great riders like defending class champion Charlies Williams and prior class champions like David Aldana, expect some great bar-tobar action as they compete for the Dirt Track Vintage Cup.

Kevin Windham’s Farm 14

ROUND 2

MARCH 23-24, 2024 CENTREVILLE, MS

After having Sunday’s National at Kentwood canceled due to the heavy rains, Sharon Bean and I stayed over the next week there, along with a lot of other folks who decided to camp out, while waiting for the following week’s Nationals at Farm 14. Mother Nature, who had poured water on our track, was at least nice enough to us the rest of our time there, as we saw sunny skies and nice weather the rest of our stay.

Many riders wanting to get in more practice on the track were surprised to find dry and dusty conditions by Tuesday and Wednesday. Henry and Jay Gref took time to give some basic riding school lessons for some of the fortunate riders who stayed over. It was easy to see the improvements in some of the riders as the day progressed.

On Thursday, everyone started the short trek over to Mississippi and Kevin Windham’s Farm 14. While weather forecasters were calling for some rain on Thursday night, it looked like we were going to have a

nicer weekend and dryer conditions. And while we did get some nice slow rain overnight, it was nothing like the previous week’s downpours. It would make for a little bit of muddy conditions for Friday’s cross-country

course in some sections, but the motocross course would still be needing watered before Saturday’s and Sunday’s races.

The 5+ mile cross country course laid out by Kevin was a very nice mixture of flowing hilly woods trails, open lanes, grass track, and motocross track that I thought was super fun. There was even a tough little sand hill that tested riders and bikes to make it up. You could tell that Kevin had put a LOT of time into making this course. All the trails were nice. Building a bridge that would rival any in a state or national forest trail was one example. Putting in culverts for water drainage and building a huge high dam to ride over the bad section had to have taken a lot of time and work to make. It was easy for me to see all the work done. Kudos to Kevin for all that he did!

The vintage cross country took off shortly after 2pm with Chris Gillespie and Trampas Parker leading the pack. Once again, Trampas showed his skills in off-road riding as he quickly built up a big lead. His standing up, smooth style of riding could easily be seen from far away. Becky Hayes, fresh off her retirement from AHRMA duties, along with hubby Craig showed up and put in some laps as did Chicago Jerry from Ohio. I loved watching and listening to Wes Wyman and his ‘60s Honda twin.. It brought back lots of memories of the ‘60s (yes, I’m that old).

A very special moment was seeing Sam Burroughs make an appearance as the starter and then the finish-line flagman. Sam was looking good and other than some double vision, is making a remarkable recovery. His outlook is great and as he continues his therapy sessions expects to be back on a bike this year!

The post-vintage cross country race got started at 4:30, and once again it was Trampas Parker leading the way, although a few other fast riders like Joel White and Heath Parker were not far behind, keeping the pressure on. By now the course had gotten a little bit tougher as the low, greasy sections started to get rutted up. Even the sand hill was chewed up pretty good and was getting deeper. The smart riders used a few creative lines banking off the sides of the

ravine and crisscrossing their way to the top. If you didn’t get a good run at it, you were either stuck or pushing... The spectators loved it!

After Friday’s events, everyone was treated to a nice cooked meal at the pavilion by Potts Thomas and Miss Ramona James, and cross country awards were passed out.

On Saturday, motocross practice started on a nicely-prepared track.

Kevin and crew had taken all the lips off of the jumps and had rounded the tabletops. He had also added another dual lane section. He left the track packed through the week and only lightly tilled a few inches, and unline the previous week, actually had to water the track.

After winning the 125 Expert class the previous week, everyone was watching Reed Borgfield to see if he could repeat that feat. A new

WWW.AHRMA.ORG 25 MAY 2024 AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION farm 14
Trampas Parker taking the vintage overall James Blackwood on his 1986 Honda XR 200

contender jumped into the mix, though, and added some more spice to the class. Jamie Adams showed up with a 125 Honda CR prepared to do battle with the regular cast of 125 racers. He showed that he has the speed to run with the fast guys and won the second moto, despite a balky transmission.

Last week’s winner, Reed Borgfield had his share of problems and had to do a top end change between motos. That didn’t work out as he again had a seizure while battling for third place with Jake Gould. In the end, it was 2023 National Champion, Jerry Mattox, who came out the overall winner with 1-2 finishes, despite battling a flu bug all week, barely able to talk on race day. Jamie Adams’ 3-1 finish got him second overall, while Jake Gould finished third with 6-3 finishes.

After Saturday’s events, everyone was treated to a nice, cooked meal at Tracy Gibbins’ campsite with Joel “Jo Boy” White, Hoot Parker, Miss Ramona James, and Glen Guedry providing some great southern cooking. Motocross awards were passed out and Kevin put up the big screen TV so the crowd could watch

country

the Supercross races live. A great ending to the day.

For Sunday’s races, the track was worked over and more water put down, and some jumps were built up a little bit. One thing everyone was looking forward to was the debut of Sharon Bean “The Barefoot

Photographer” racing her first every AHRMA National... with Boots on! Sharon didn’t let anyone down; you could hear her screams all over the pits as she went up and down the steep hills.

In her first race, she went down in a little muddy rutted corner, got up,

26 WWW.AHRMA.ORG APRIL 2024 AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
NATIONAL - motocross / cross

started the bike, and fell over again. She got up and tried getting on the bike and fell over again.... By this time the flag man had gotten to her, just as I arrived. She was exhausted, hot, and out of breath. I told her to “just ride and let the wind cool you down.” She took off and soon you could hear her hollering again. She even passed one rider who ended up racing with her to the finish.

In her second moto, I told her “just ride smooth and don’t fall down!” They started the women on the same gate with the men’s 40+ and 60+ novice class’s and she got an ok start, but soon found herself racing with Kristen San Juan. They went round and round only a few bike lengths apart. Sharon said she could see and hear Kristen behind her. At one point, Kristen got up beside her and Sharon twisted the throttle to the max and used all of the 12hp the mighty XR had and pulled away a couple bike lengths again. At the finish line, you could have thrown a blanket over them! Sharon’s 2-1 finish gave her the overall and her first AHRMA National win!

Race 11 on Sunday pitted Phillip Prinz and Skeet Taylor. Moto one had Taylor out to the lead though Prinz made the pass on lap two and it stuck, giving Prinz the first moto win. Moto two had Taylor again with the early lead though on lap two, the pair started swapping positions almost corner by corner. Prinz wore down Taylor, and finally on the fourth lap, Taylor made a few mistakes and some missed gears which allowed Prinz to pass and eventually made a sizeable lead to win the moto and the overall. The two riders were exhausted at the end of the race with both smiling in the pits afterwards recognizing a well-fought and fun battle from the two Texans.

Windham is looking forward to doing the program again in 2025 and says to expect continued improvements to the property and to look forward to some mixtures of new dirt added to the motocross track to make it even better! We look forward to seeing Kevin’s changes and everyone should support all his hard work and devotion to AHRMA and giving us a great race facility!

JASPER, FL

AHRMA Dirt Track took to Cross Roads Motorplex in Jasper, Florida, hosted by Southern Dirt Track Association. Spectators witnessed a thrilling display of flat track motorcycle racing, where riders battled against the odds on the oval dirt track.

As the race began, roaring engines echoed through the tall pine trees surrounding the track and billowing dust clouds kicked up as riders prepared for this fast, blue-groove clay 1/4-mile track. With every lean into a corner and

every shift of their body weight, they danced on the edge of control, pushing themselves and their machines to the absolute limit. Each turn became a strategic battleground, as competitors jockeyed for position, searching for the perfect line that would give them the advantage. For spectators, the sight of motorcycles sliding sideways through the turns was nothing short of mesmerizing, evoking memories of classic flat track battles from days gone by.

In the fiercely contested 250AM class, Vincent Pearson showcased his prowess, securing an impressive first-place finish. With precision cornering and fearless acceleration, Pearson led every lap, earning a well-deserved spot on the podium. Richard Brodock captured double victories by taking first place in the Sportsman 750 and adding another first place finish in the Sportsman 250. Dink Stevens proved his mettle in

multiple classes, clinching second place in both the Sportsman 750 and the 50+ class. Stevens demonstrated his versatility on the dirt oval, battling competitors lap after lap to secure podium finishes in two highly competitive fields. Buck Cunningham earned double podiums with a first place finish in Lightweight Vintage and a second place finish in Sportsman 250. While John Burger secured a second place finish in Lightweight Vintage and a victory in the 450 AM. Jimmy Walker emerged with victories in both 50+ and Sportsman 360 class.

Beyond the thrill of competition, AHRMA Dirt Track is also a hub of camaraderie and community, where riders and enthusiasts come together to share stories, swap tips, and revel in their shared passion. In the paddock, friendships are forged, and rivalries are put aside as everyone comes together to celebrate the sport they love. It’s this

sense of camaraderie that truly sets AHRMA apart, creating an atmosphere of friendship and goodwill that endures long after the last race has been run.

As the dust settles and the engines fall silent, the memories of Cross Roads Motorplex will linger on, a testament to the enduring spirit of the sport and the relentless pursuit of excellence by its participants. AHRMA Dirt Track wants to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Southern Dirt Track Association, the esteemed host of this exhilarating event at Cross Roads Motorplex. Their dedication and passion for promoting flat track motorcycle racing have not only provided riders with a platform to showcase their talents, but have also enriched the lives of enthusiasts and spectators alike. Here’s to many more thrilling races in the future, fueled by the spirit of camaraderie and the love of the sport!

ROUND 2

APRIL 6, 2024 WHITEVILLE, TN

Cool spring temperatures greeted the 25 trials riders who were ready to tackle the first AHRMA Trials National and Southeast Regional event of the year. When first arriving at the property all I could see were cotton fields which little did I realize were just camouflage for the great sections we were about to encounter in the narrow wood sections of the property. Mark Hawk did a great job of utilizing the different terrain of hills, ditches, and logs to put on a great event!

Sections 1 & 2 were ditches, one having you go down the slope

of the land which was unique and one challenging you across through up and downs and tight turns. Section 3 brought logs into play, and for the top classes some sizeable logs! Section 4 was a nice off camber for all classes that brought some points. There was a nice creek crossing just below so if Mark really wants to punish (I mean challenge) people next year, he has the perfect spot to do it. Sections 5-8 that led back to the pits consisted of tight turns, off camber hills and a few awkward log crossings. We know in trials that the majority of points are taken in turns and they had some great ones here.

As the only rider in the Modern Classic Master class, Tom McNeal rode his TL 125 to first place. The

Modern Classic, which rode many of the same lines as the Master class had the tightest competition

for the day with three very seasoned trials riders of Frank Schoenbeck, Mark Sturtevant and Paul Thistle also finishing the trial with 0 points. As we know, tie goes to the oldest rider with Frank holding that distinction. Speaking with Frank after the event, this was the first event he has ever cleaned and this guy is one great trials rider! Modern Classic Intermediate honors go to Henry Gregorich with Brian Fore close behind. PI honors go to Joe Ragon and the novice win to Zachary Kirn on his TL 125.

In Classic Expert Jay Holton brought home first on his always impressive Hodaka powered GRM with just one point for the day! If you haven’t seen this bike you need to. Classic Novice win went to the young-at-hear Michael Collier. Premier Lightweight win goes to Steve Gilinski, Premier Heavyweight win to Francis Hall. Modern Support PI win goes to Jeff Butler and Novice class win to Keith Latiolais.

Modern Twin Shock Expert win went to Mark Hawk and Novice class winner was David Money. The Modern Classic PI battle continues at each event between Robert Lord and Scott Kirn. Robert had 24 points for the win with Scott at 39.

Colin Kirn brought home the honors in Youth B and the way he is growing that TY 80 may not be able to hold him much longer!

Six-year old Aiden Woodard with minder David won Youth C class and showed real promise for such a young rider.

Want to say thank you to Mark Hawk for the excellent sections, the dedicated volunteers who

scored and promoters Bob and Joe Ragon and Clayton Farris. A special thanks to landowner David Avent. We really appreciate you having us and hope you will host us again next year!

ROUND 1

APRIL 13-14, 2024

THREE SPRINGS, PA

Rocket baby…c’mon…we’re gonna fly! Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott’s lyrics swirl inside my head while I

beat upon my bikes with various repair utensils in rhythm with the driving drum beat from the late eighties hit. My last-minute crescendo of maintenance is the culmination of an off-season that seems, as always, agonizingly long. In truth, the Mid-Atlantic (MA) gang had gathered relatively recently for its season-ending banquet as a bit of off-season reprieve, but the eagerness to saddle up on some vintage iron is an intoxicating desire. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the words “Ten Seconds!” since the checkered flag flew at White Rose in October, or more accurately, after I took a low-altitude flight over the bars after pancaking an expansion chamber on a hidden log. Thankfully uninjured and undeterred, I was ready for the

36 WWW.AHRMA.ORG MAY 2024 AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION mid-atlantic

2024 season to start immediately thereafter! So now, we have collectively survived the offseason and anticipation turns to jubilation as rigs pull into the sweet digs of Rocket Raceway in rural Three Springs, PA. The racers and fans are greeted with open arms by Rocket Raceway’s owner Corey Wolfe and team as well as Mark Carlson who graciously grants permission to use his surrounding property for the bulk of Sunday’s cross-country loop.

As activities begin to commence on Saturday morning, AHRMA Mid-Atlantic’s front man Dave Kutskel shares with the gathering gaggle of participants that the kick-off to the 2024 season marks twenty years of Rocket Raceway’s participation in the series. Certainly an unmatched benchmark for the region’s vintage scene and more reason to celebrate this opening weekend and share thanks with Mark and Corey for partnering with AHRMA consistently throughout the years. Fittingly, there’s no better way to celebrate than to pack the starting gate full of lustful vintage dirt bikes and get the full sensory overload at the drop of the gate. Motocross is where the season gets its start, and Saturday is chock full of racing action taking place across the picturesque valley upon which the Rocket Raceway motocross course is sculpted.

A good deal of rain leading up to the event, including some rain Friday afternoon and evening, was creating flashbacks of last season’s unrelenting battle with foul weather. Expert course prep to shed water before the event and Mother Nature’s combination of bright sunshine and a stiff steady wind eliminated any concerns over sloppy track conditions. Any lingering moisture uncovered in practice was short-lived, and by moto two, dust was flying.

Rocket is a thoroughly modern motocross facility, and Corey and team continually invest in the property and its facilities. As such, its layout is built to cater to a more modern-bike crowd, which is fine for post-vintage and up MA classes, but not quite as suited to

WWW.AHRMA.ORG 37 MAY 2024 AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION mid-atlantic

the under-four-inch travel crowd. For 2024, Dave and Corey agreed to run the vintage and novice class races on the facility’s youth track, which required quite a bit of logistical mojo to seamlessly incorporate into the program with separate flaggers and scorers stationed at the youth track throughout the day. Now, don’t let the “youth” moniker fool you into thinking the racing would be tamed down, because this track was an absolute blast on a vintage bike and quite demanding as the compact format kept you busy everywhere through a lap. Wrapping upon itself several times at it ascends and descends a hillside adjacent to the pit area, the course utilizes a mixture of bowl turns and flat corners connected with tabletops, step-ups, and stutter bumps. If you were so willing, every jump on the course was totally approachable on a

vintage machine. With clear sights lines for spectators around the entire course, the racers put on quite a show dicing through the corners and leaping tabletops with ease. So fun!

The post vintage and newer classes lined up on the same gate but after the uphill start straight, the pack took a sweeping right-

hander to battle on the main track. This first turn is probably near the highest point in elevation on the track and makes for quite an action shot as the riders crest the hill in formation jostling for the holeshot. In general, the course is wide and the tilled soil is soft and conforms to the preferred lines with berms forming quickly and solidly. There is plenty of room to stretch a throttle cable if you dare, and many of the jumps are of the tabletop variety so there is little fear of coming up short. In consideration of the bike’s limitation’s, the largest triple jump on the course was bypassed, but a few doubles remained, including an uphill step-up double that was quite a sight when brave riders pinned it and took flight…we just got to fly (that song again!). I’m sure that hundreds of riders clear this particular leap on any routine practice day at Rocket, but seeing a Yamaha IT or Honda XR tackle the gap is quite a cool spectacle.

Woods racing took the stage for Sunday’s action, and right from the start you could see that the great turnout from Saturday’s races was going to carry over into the cross-country discipline as well. The starting grid for the vintage race was impressive and included a large group of new-

to-the-region racers who made the long drive down from Long Island to join the fun. By the smiles on their faces after the racing was completed, I think we’ll see more of them in the future! Races two and three mirrored the generous rider count, and in another promising development, the novice rows were absolutely packed! We look forward to seeing these newer participants grow within the series. The course layout was typical Rocket fare with four and a half miles of mostly established trails, ubiquitous Pennsylvania rocks, logging roads, elevation changes, challenging flowing singletrack with roots and off cambers, a let-er-eat grass track with a snotty, tight, corkscrew down/up and plenty of mud puddles and creek crossings to wet your boots. This place is always a fun ride, and trail boss Mike Zdybak provided the goods once again to start off ’24 in proper Mid-Atlantic fashion.

What a great weekend with fair April weather, excellent racing and rider turnout, and in all a great start to a season with lots of intrigue. New riders and established regulars have a lot to be excited about in 2024 as the region will host a few AHRMA National events and the regional series has added two completely new properties, one of which has long played host to the AMA National Enduro Series, and the other is a promising location with a two-wheeled history of its own. Many thanks to the MA volunteers for the pride and effort, Corey Wolfe and his track crew, Mark Carlson, and the region’s fine list of sponsors; Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Grove Printing, KMI Printing, Horizon Homes, and M3One.

Please visit www.ahrmama.org to see the results for the entire weekend and the exciting upcoming schedule. See you on the starting line!

We’ve been able to get our hands on some photos showcasing the history of AHRMA racing throughout the ages, even back as far as 1989 and the inception of the not-forprofit organization we know and love today.

Sometimes we’ll be able to accompany the photo with some race results or rider IDs and other interesting information. Other times, this will just be a moment to reflect back and enjoy some photos long forgotten.

If you happen to see yourself or someone you know in the photo, reach out and let us know! Better yet, if you were there, tell us how the racing was, what the track was like, what bike you were on. Help us relive the “glory days.”
