I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to their 2024 year, complete with successful bike builds and all the 10mm sockets you could ever want. The AHRMA team has been hard at work putting together an amazing upcoming race season, and I hope everyone is prepared for some exciting races. While there will never be a perfect schedule for everyone, the team has worked hard to secure fan-favorite tracks, and even bring in some new locations. In this issue, we get to chat with 2023 Formula 750 Vintage Cup winner, Tim Joyce, check in with the Heartland region, and see all the action from the Mid-Atlantic region’s final race of the year. We also get some important updates from Off-Road Race Director, Terry McPhillips, on the topic of race numbers. If you race motocross or cross country, please take a few moments to read the latest update on that project, starting on page 16, as you may be affected.

2024 is Upon Us

We have a full and exciting 2024 race schedule across all three AHRMA disciplines. The challenge of assembling a race schedule is a daunting task and starts in spring for the following year. The race directors are in communication with venues and promoters yearround. We try to assemble a collection of established venues with a sprinkle of new tracks to make things interesting. Competition for preferential event dates is fierce, and we often must “take a back seat” while we wait for the bigger organizations to confirm their dates. We also consider the schedules of competing organizations as we do not want to dilute each other on popular weekends within the same geographical region. Finally, we try to create a national and regional schedule that serves our members in a geographically equitable way within the AHRMA budget.

the last year of Diamond Don’s, but new and exciting tracks were folded into the schedule. In the end, I feel we have a strong schedule, but we are always looking to improve for 2025. Constructive feedback to the discipline directors will always be welcome. Road Race will kick of the season opener at Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, Georgia, on February 16th. Roebling Road is a member favorite and is always well-attended. In 2023, we had 768 race entries for the weekend, the second most attended event behind the Barber Vintage Festival. Come on Thursday for a track day run by Stickboy and attend the annual Road Race awards banquet on Friday evening.

Wildwood MX Park in Kentwood Louisiana will host the Off-Road season opener on March 17th. Make the trip down to the hometown of Britney Spears and get your fix of motocross (Vintage, Post-Vintage, and NextGen) and cross country. If dirt track is your thing, Beaver Creek Speedway in Toney, Alabama, is where you need to be for the season opener on March 23rd. Get dirty and get sideways!

s I write this in the middle of January, the country is enveloped in a polar vortex. Looking out the window of my house, the ground is covered with snow and the temperature is a brisk -7 degrees Fahrenheit, with a windchill making it “feel like” -29 degrees. Ouch. But the weatherman says spring is only 65 days away!

The 2024 schedule was a bit more difficult to assemble. On the Road Race side, there were venues that either closed or were not able to provide us with facilities that met AHRMA requirements. This forced us to find replacements late in the scheduling process. Off-Road saw 8

given help and advice from each department ranging from Race Control to Timing and Scoring, Tech, Grids, and Registration. It has been wonderful hearing from many racers who want to volunteer their time to help make my first race weekend as the new Road Race Director successful. For that, I am very grateful.

Hello From Your New Road Race Director Last year when I was packing up at Barber, I never dreamed that at the start of the 2024 season I’d be the new Road Race Director. I often say to myself that “The only constant in life is change,” and this is a big one for me. I know I’m going to miss racing, but I hope to get back on track in the future. For now, my change is immersing myself in learning all things AHRMA Road Racing off the bike. I’m very excited for this change and opportunity! At the time of this writing, I will have already completed two weeks on the job. I’ve been applying my 30year career in production to every aspect of the job. I’ve assigned

Roebling Road Raceway a job folder, and I’m ticking off my “to do” and ideas list. At the top of the list is communication. I want all racers, AHRMA Officials, and volunteers to know that I’m available to discuss ideas and thoughts when the time permits. I like to think about ideas and opportunities from many directions, and it’s teamwork that will keep us all moving forward. Speaking of teamwork, I’m very pleased to announce that the team of officials and volunteers is in place for Reobling. After a multitude of phone calls and emails, I feel very comfortable that the race weekend structure is in place. I’ve been

I’m also excited to be part of three committees that work behind the scenes to make a race season exciting and safe. Whether it’s the Safety Committee doing checks and balances on all AHRMA disciplines, or the Branding Committee that is always working to make AHRMA look fresh, fast, and fun to the outside world. There is the very important Road Race Committee that gets down to the nuts and bolts of each upcoming race, looking to make improvements at every turn. In closing, I want to share that every decision I make will be in the best interest of the organization and the safety of all involved. I’m looking forward to seeing you. he 2024 race schedule is right around the corner and I, for one, am really looking forward to it! We’ve worked hard to pull together schedules for both the National events as well as the regional events. From a National standpoint, I’m really excited about the schedule. We’re going back to several great tracks we have previously run and have added some old favorites.

Honda Hills was a new track for us this past year, and when the reviews came in, the consensus was that it was an awesome track and a great event! You can see that Honda Hills is back on the schedule for July 2024! Farm 14 was another new track that had rave reviews. To make it even better, we are doing a back-to-back event with Wildwood MX Park! These are two tracks that are working together to make a weeklong trip worthwhile!

Personally, I’m really tickled to be going back to Chaney Ranch in Southern California! This event is being held on the Lon Chaney Ranch in Warner Springs, CA. We were last there two years ago and, unfortunately, things didn’t fall into place for us in 2023 to return. But we’re back for 2024! This is an outstanding location for all off-road events! For those of you interested in cross country and trials, we will be going back once again to Reynlow Park and Barber Motorsports after a one-year hiatus. Both should be great! We also brought back some favorites from last year. Both disciplines are being run at both the Tennessee Ridge Runners and Sugar Hill in Tennessee. Mill Creek will be hosting both motocross and cross country. I know there are a number of questions that start with “But you don’t have an event scheduled near me!” Believe me, we tried. The Regional Coordinators and I reached out to a lot of places with a goal of having a minimum of two events in each region. Unfortunately, several of them did not pan out for one reason or another - dates didn’t align, the track didn’t meet our requirements, or numerous other reasons. Pulling this together is definitely a challenge. We are continuing to talk to many of these folks to see how they can fit into future schedules, so all is not lost.

If you know of a location that would be good for vintage, please pass it along. We are always looking for additional places for events and are building a list of possible locations for National and Regional events! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you at an event in 2024!

AHRMA Announces New Road Race Director The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) is pleased to announce the selection of Leasha Overturf as AHRMA Road Race Director effective immediately.

Overturf, who has been passionate about motorcycles since she was a child, has been an active road racing competitor with AHRMA since 2012, and was named AHRMA’s Lady Road Racer of the Year in 2016.

of bringing everyone together at each race and being at the ready to handle any situation is very exciting to me. I will approach the job with humble ease and creative spirit working in tandem with my new AHRMA team-mates. AHRMA Event to Feature eMotoRacing Varsity Challenge

High-tech electric motorcycles will charge up the 2024 American Historic Racing Motorycycle Association (AHRMA) road racing season. The 11th Annual eMotoRacing Varsity Challenge electric motorcycle road race will be part of rounds eleven and twelve of the 2024 AHRMA Bridgestone Tires National Historic Roadrace Series June 21-23 at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, NJ. Collegiate racing teams from the US and Canada will race their engineering student-built prototype electric race bikes in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) Formula Lightning Series. During 2023, the University of Michigan SPARK Atlas took first and second places overall in

the AHRMA Formula Lightning Series competition with David McPherson piloting the prototype.

During 2024, the University of Michigan will have competition from Quebec’s University of Sherbrooke, Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University, and other university teams. Racing against these collegiate teams will be other private teams from across the US.

“I’m excited to see what universities participate in the Varsity Challenge this year. Many of these bikes are ground up built prototypes and represent what the future will hold for electronic motorcycle racing.” said Bob Berbeco, AHRMA’s Varsity Challenge Series coordinator.

The university-based prototypes are purpose-built racing motorcycles and represent the latest in electric-powered motorcycle technology.

In addition to the Varsity Challenge, all teams are welcome to participate in any of the races within the 2024 Bridgestone Tires AHRMA Roadracing Series.

The AHRMA Formula Lightning series is the premier zero emissions motorcycle road racing series in the US. Bikes may be powered by any means of propulsion that does not emit

Off-Road Race Numbers STATUS AND UPDATES WORDS BY TERRY MCPHILLIPS, OFF-ROAD RACE DIRECTOR

ith the Road Race community having updated all their race numbers to meet the standards listed in the handbook, I have recently received a number of emails from off-road members asking about how this is affecting the off-road community. We on the off-road side are way behind the Road Race community in addressing this. We are only now looking to update and clean up the race number tables in MSR. The current updates were approved in June of 2022 and an announcement made that these needed to be updated by 12/31/2023. On the off-road side of the house, we knew right up front that this would be a lower priority with all that was going on and had the statement added to that handbook that this would be applied “at the Off-Road Director’s discretion” (See section 3.9 for the current guidelines that were approved and to which, ultimately, we will be adhering). The first question asked is always “Why are we doing this now?” Well, circumstances have come about where we need to start moving forward on this for a number of reasons. First and foremost, we need to consolidate Post Vintage 16

Motocross (PVMX) and NextGen Motocross (NGMX) registration within MotorsportReg (MSR) in order to allow members to get the appropriate pre-registration discounts when running both PVMX and NGMX on the same day (as opposed to paying for two first-class entries when running classes in both PVMX and NGMX). Keep in mind that when off-road disciplines were initially set up in MSR, race numbers were set up in multiple tables based on the assumption that each discipline (Vintage Motocross - VMX, PVMX, NGMX, and Cross Country) would be run as completely separate series on separate days. This was set up so that each off-road discipline has a separate rider’s number table within MSR (one table each for VMX, PVMX, NGMX and Cross Country). Since we have always run PVMX and NGMX on the same days, consolidation is required for us to maintain a single rider’s number table in MSR for PVMX and NGMX. Combining the tables allows us to run a single MSR registration event that includes both PVMX and NGMX classes, along with the appropriate member discounts. This saves members money as well as making things easier and less time-consuming in setting up and registering events. It also saves time and effort for AHRMA AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

by reducing complexity within MSR and reduces our host’s effort in registration at events. Second, we need bring all race numbers into compliance. This will help those scoring races to better see the numbers during the race which will improve accuracy of race results. If you think that this isn’t a problem, you probably haven’t scored a race with a large number of riders coming across the line together (If you want to get an idea as to how difficult this can be, let us know. We’re always looking for volunteers!). We are going to move forward with this in a phased approach as there are a number of technical items as well as processes and procedures that will be affected by cleaning the tables up and bringing numbers in compliance.

PHASE 1 Phase 1 will be combining the PVMX and NGMX tables. We will look at race numbers that conflict between the two tables and resolve them so each rider only has a single number for PVMX and NGMX, and each number does not have a duplicate rider assigned. This will necessitate going through these two tables, finding conflicts, contacting the JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

riders involved and adjusting rider numbers to remove the conflicts. We will be reaching out to each of you individually to address these. Along with this, we will be updating numbers to remove duplicates within the PV table and moving forward to remove expired members from the PVMX table. (Note: If you have an expired membership, now is the time to renew your membership or risk losing your rider number in the future). As a part of Phase 1, we will be creating new templates in MSR as well as updating the post entry forms to combine PVMX and NGMX in a single form.

PHASE 2 & 3 Phase 2 will have us going through and changing numbers that do not meet the rider number requirements in the PVMX table.

PHASE 4 Phase 4 will consist of updating the Cross Country in the same manner as completed for VMX and PVMX. If you have a number that doesn’t meet the requirements, and want to help move this forward, please fill out the contact form at www.ahrma.org and select the Off-Road Number Request in the topic field. By doing this, you will have a better chance of getting a number you want before it is already taken (and with some numbers, they may already be taken if they have a leading zero). Mindi Walker (my better half) will be leading this project. Don’t be surprised if she contacts you. We DO understand that your rider number is akin to your identity, especially if you’ve had it for a long time. We are going to do the best we can to help those who have held numbers for a long time to keep them. But we ask you to work with us on this. orn into a British motocycle shop in Vermont owned by his dad, Tim Joyce never really had the money to go racing. After moving to Florida where he was enlisted in the Air Force, he heard about a road race in Talladega, only a short four-hour ride away. He rode his motorcycle up to watch, and once he saw it, he decided “I gotta do this!” He was 30 when the bug started. In 2023, he added yet another Championship title to his roster, taking home the win in the Formula 750 Vintage Cup class in the 2023 Bridgestone Tires National Roadracing Series. 18

Talking with Tim about his 30year history racing, and winning, AHRMA road races, he’s very humble and has lost track of just how many championships he’s earned. He’s taken home numerous championship wins in the BEARS class, Formula 750 class, and Sidecar class, just to name a few. When the Formula 750 class was announced for the 2023 Vintage Cup class, Tim already had the bike picked out: a 1968 NYC Norton Seeley Nourish, owned by John Magyar and maintained by NYC Norton’s Kenny Cummings. this bike, and commented that it’s always been a very reliable machine for him. But as hard as he felt he was going to have to run it, he knew there was a possibility of it giving the team an issue, so he pulled a second bike into the plans: his personal 750 Triumph. The season was full of some tight competition between Tim, Chris Spargo, and Shane Turpin, and some exciting happenings as the races unfolded. We had a chance to chat with Tim about his 2023 season. LET’S START WITH AN OVERVIEW JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

OF HOW YOUR 2023 SEASON WENT. There’s nothing simple about the 2023 season. The season started out at Roebling Road [Raceway], of course. Everything was perfect. I stretched out a lead. We had a bike problem, which caused me to come in early. It was a very simple problem, but we DNF’d the first race. Sunday, I won the second race. That’s when things started rolling downhill. Then we went to Heartland Park. Chris Spargo came out this year on an RD400, riding the best I’ve ever seen him ride. He and I were having a knock-down, drag-out race on Saturday. He ended up getting me at the line. We went back to work on the bike Saturday night and were able to come up with a few things that I was able to win on Sunday, but it was still a very close race. Next up was Nebraska. Chris couldn’t come to Nebraska, so that was a couple pretty easy wins for me. For New Jersey, I have my own bike. I won pretty handily on Saturday. My bike doesn’t make quite the power the Nourish does. I wanted to ride my own bike on Sunday so we could have some good races. I had a very good race the whole race until two to go with Kevin Dinsmoor; the two of us kind of broke away, but he unfortunately crashed out.

I felt that was our downfall - the handling of the motorcycle. Not that [the handling] is bad, but when you’re up against a bike [of the caliber] like Shane was riding, you gotta have something good. We were trying different things all year, trying different shocks and fork springs, oil weights, because I knew it was tight. The littlest of things makes a difference of winning or losing. This was probably the toughest field that I’ve raced so far in a feature race. I got on the bike for practice at Talladega, and the first lap, there seemed to be something wrong with it. I pulled right back in. Kenny

[Cummings] pulled the valve cover off, and one of the rocker arm supports had broken, so the rocker arms were only halfway pushing the valve down. We were playing games all year, and so were Shane and Brian [Larrabure]. If they had a problem, they weren’t letting us know, and if we had a problem, we weren’t letting them know. I had an issue with my Triumph, so I didn’t have it there with me. I’ve been to Talladega a lot; it’s a pretty simple track, so I didn’t really need a lot of practice. Kenny had the parts to fix the bike back in New York. He called one of his workers, got the parts we needed, and

THOSE SOUNDED LIKE SOME EXCITING RACES! Those were barn burners! I led the whole race [at Blackhawk] on Saturday, but by a hair. The last lap, Shane and I were still trying to go back and forth, but I wasn’t going to give. Chris was right there, too. The last lap, I led to the flag; Spargo got by Shane. Sunday, I was on the Struggle Bus. We were struggling with handling issues most of the year, no matter what we tried. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

shipped them overnight via FedEx; we had the parts to fix the bike by 10am Saturday morning. We went on to win the race that day. I think this particular mechanical problem started Sunday at Blackhawk; it just seemed like it didn’t have the power. It was probably cracked at Blackhawk and let go when we started it cold at Talladega. Sunday, we were trying something different. If we use tire warmers, we keep the temperature pretty low, but it seems like about halfway through the race, they start to get greasy. I figured it was hot enough out, so we didn’t put the tire warmers on. When I came into the first right-hand corner, and accelerated out, it just came out from under me and I highsided. From then on, I decided I’d rather deal with the squirm. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2024?

I’m two weeks behind; I went on a cruise and came back sick. I’m trying to get bikes finished up. We’ll be at Roebling. I’m going to ride a 1967 Triumph 350 in 350 GP. I’ve been riding this bike for Nigel Smallbone for several years now, and we’ve been slowly trying to develop it; it’s not a winning bike, but Nigel’s a very enthusiastic Englishman and he’s fun to ride for. Rob Hall did a lot of work to the motor this winter, so we’re hoping it can get us up on the podium, anyways. I like to go for the win, but I’m not so sure. I’m optimistic with all the huge changes they made, but even Nigel calls the bike his “grocery-getter” [laughs]. The motorcycle handles so well, so hopefully we can surprise everybody.

Tim recognizes the huge team effort by Kenny Cummings and NYC Norton, REV’IT!, MAP Cycle, and D&D Cycles. He also acknowledges the efforts of Chris Spargo, a great guy who was working with very little. Tim took home the Championship title, with Shane Turpin finishing second, and Chris Spargo rounding out the podium in third place. 20

tunning! Is the best word I can describe the weather we had all weekend. Sunny and mid 70’s; throw in a nice soaking a few days prior and I have to say the good Lord was indeed blessing us with perfect conditions to finish off a terrific year of Cross Country racing. Packed into the schedule this year where 21 days of events, from East Tennessee to Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, Arkansas, Illinois, and finishing up in Oklahoma. There were a lot of races and some championships going down to the wire and would be decided during three days in Henryetta. Anticipation was high and so was the excitement as a huge crowd rolled into Nichols Park. On Friday they ran both Vintage and Post Vintage racing. Saturday would be Post Vintage only and Sunday would be Vintage only. Team Parker did a great job of juggling multiple events and making sure everyone could attend the events they needed to attend.

FRIDAY VINTAGE CROSS COUNTRY As I lined up on the first row for the Vintage event, I looked behind me and was tickled at the number of Vintage bikes in the field, well over 50 beautiful bikes were revving up for a great race. Flagging off the race was none other than Zhan Lewis and Craig Hayes. As the engines quieted we heard the call for 10 seconds! It was silent, then the green flag waived and all pandemonium broke out. Bikes wheelieing, dirt flying, bars banging and we were off. A quick little trip on the grass track then riders were dropped into the dark, loamy woods. A few twists and turns and we came to a nice little creek crossing. No big deal, but as the weekend wore on, that little creek crossing became a favorite spectator site as it turned into an ugly, messy, greasy crossing to traverse. In my book, it was great, as was all of the course. A no-stop run through scoring, a little more grass track and we were off into the rest of the WWW.AHRMA.ORG

course which was almost six miles long. The course was reversed from last year, which was nice, because I can’t remember a thing, so it was like an all new course! Trampas [Parker] and team did a great job of clearing some of the unnecessary obstacles, opened it up a bit and created a really perfect, nice flowing course. I am glad they left in some of the tighter, twisty trail, just to get some fun wiggling in, while leaving it wide enough for MX wide bars to do just fine.

VINTAGE WOMEN/NOVICE Setting a fast pace was Chris Gillespie riding a strong Can Am 250. New rider, Clint Sodowsky in the Post Vintage (PV) 200 Novice class, would put in a good ride for second Overall and first in the PV 200 Novice class, followed by Heath Parker, who I saw lined up 24

on a pretty Bultaco and winning the Sportsman Open Expert Class. Mickey Sergeant riding a Penton won the Sportsman 200 Expert class while Scott Robirds, riding a pull-start Rokon, won the Vintage 60+ Expert class. Newcomer Jennifer Juarez riding a Honda, won second place in the Women’s Expert class and was one of only 10 riders that put in four laps within the allotted time. Unfortunately, as much as I tried to chase down Chris Gillespie and let him know he was missing a turn or two on the grass track, he was disqualified. In his defense, running up front has its disadvantages, as he was blazing new trail at times. The grass track field was barely burned in and if you didn’t look hard to the left, there was a gate to be missed. No worries, though; Chris is always so happy and was OK with the DQ and went on to have a great weekend of racing.

Next to line up were over 80 Post Vintage bikes. Anticipation of a battle was high as you saw Ricky Parker, Heath Parker, Terry Cunningham, James Winn, Kevin Hutchinson, and all the way from Italy, Alessandro Reniero, lined up on the first row. It was also great to see some motocross regulars lining up to get in on the cross country action. I saw Bubba Dennis, James Radcliff, Bob Bean, Jimmy Golliher, John Gott, Sam Huggins, Mike Husted, and even Johnnie Friedli all who normally are riding motocross, but were now ready to attack the trails. At the end of this race, Ricky Parker fended off Terry Cunningham and Heath to take the overall. Rick Allen on a Honda put in a great ride wining the PV 50+ Intermediate class followed closely by Carlos Mayo. David Rozell riding a beautiful Husky won the Pre Modern Expert class and Sam Huggins riding a yellow bike, won the PV Open Intermediate class. And long time AHRMA members, Bubba Dennis and Rick Owens, duked it out in the PV 60+ Expert class with Bubba coming out on top.

SATURDAY POST VINTAGE Early Saturday morning, Post Vintage bikes lined up. Or as I like to say, the evasion of the XR200’s. The top five spots were taken by XR200’s and winning the overall was new-to-AHRMA rider, Ried Malcom from Kansas, followed by Heath Parker, Ricky Parker, Alessandro Reniero, and Brian Aliff, all in the PV 200 Expert class. It must have been a great war between Reid, Heath, and Ricky as they slid into the finish line within seconds of each other. Husky rider Eric Bolin took the win in the PV Open Expert class, and while riding with some busted up ribs, G. Scott Price won the PV Open Expert class. Mark Reed riding a nice Yammy IT175 won the Historic Intermediate class, chased by Randy Holford on his fun Hodaka. A special mention to my friend Bruce Dalton, owner of Moto Adventure in Loveland, Colorado, he had a great ride at the T&S event in the very stacked PV 200 Expert class, won seventh place for the day and second place in the end of the year Championship behind Iron Man Bill Hester.

SUNDAY VINTAGE/ WOMEN/NOVICE Rolling the clocks back for Daylight Savings, Vintage riders were on the line at 7:30 am. Again at the front of the pack was Chris Gillespie taking the Vintage Overall win. But look who took second place! Sheila Monk riding her trusty PE and winning the PV Women’s Expert class. Rounding out the Vintage Overall Podium was Mark Shafer winning the Vintage 50+ Intermediate class. Riding a 1970’s Suzuki was Steve Heathcock, who I see at almost every event, taking home the win in the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class as well as the end of the year Championship. And as always, I love seeing the gals out on the course. Trini Cunningham won the Vintage Women’s Intermediate class and took home a number 1 plate as well.

IN SUMMARY What a great way to top off a fantastic year of Cross Country racing. Perfect weather, perfect terrain, and perfect trails. After the Cross Country on Sunday, there was a lot of motocross to watch and ride and always fun final Wild West Shootout races. When the

final checkered flag was waived, we all cleaned up and headed to the community center for some fine food and of course plenty of bench racing. Again, thank you to Team Parker for putting on another great event.

TO HONOR BECKY HAYES Sadly, it was also Becky Hayes’ last event as AHRMA Cross Country Coordinator. Becky has spent many years guiding our Cross Country program into what we now know as a strong, competitive series with consistently well-run events. It’s not an easy task; there is a lot of behind the scenes work that we never see. She has worked with every promoter, walked almost every course, noted any arrowing issues and potential trouble spots using her in-depth knowledge of what it takes to put on a vintage race, which is not your average Hare Scrambles race. She finetuned a consistent scoring format that you can count on to provide accurate and timely scores. Becky, you will be missed as a coordinator, but your presence at the events will always be a happy occasion. Enjoy your retirement. You earned it!

rriving at Henryetta, Oklahoma, a week ahead of the final races for the season, we were happy to see that the previous weeks’ cold temps had moved on and we were greeted with some fabulous sunny skies and warm temps. T&S sure had someone looking out for them! We were also greeted by the hardworking couple who are host to this event, Trampas and Sherri Parker. They had been at it for several months getting things prepped and a million and one details taken care of. This event they host is in Nichols Park, the city park of Henryetta. With over 200 acres to work with, they are able to put on a firstrate cross country race with a motocross track that is good for all the different levels of bikes and riders, and multiple challenging trials sections. But wait, there’s more: a large 17-acre lake to do some fishing, a dog show for 26

banners everywhere! Sponsors represented. Flags of all sorts. In the town of Henryetta, the businesses have signs welcoming all the racers.

With over 700 racers showing up and over 25 National Championships to be decided going into this event, you could feel the excitement and tension in the air. Racers from all over the country, from California to Florida to New York, across the midwest and Canada, were converging on this small town with high expectations. Bikes were tuned to perfection. Old friends and old rivals greeted each other and the tall tales were getting told around the campfires each night. I can’t give much info about the trials as I was busy elsewhere, other than it was Jay Holton and Kevin Kight that did the work setting up and running it, but I can give a little insight into the cross country event, as I had a chance to ride it on a newly-acquired XR200. A perfect bike for this old man to take around a perfect course. The start was over in a grassy area that was also part of the grass track section of the course. Wave after wave of riders took off for their one hour test of their skills... (or lack of) .

My XR started one kick and I pulled a nice holeshot and lead that lasted all of about 10 seconds... Going into the woods section a little hot and finding out the little XR just didn’t have enough brakes to whoaa me down, I ended up in the brush and let two riders go by. Back on course and the little 200 just a blast to ride, I quickly got back up to the front and just enjoyed the fun course that wound around the lake, through the woods and grassy areas, with some blacktop road sections to give you a breather and test your road-racing skills Trampas laid out a course that was a must-ride event! On to Saturday and the MX track. The track was mowed, watered and ready for practice. A little muddy in practice as Trampas didn’t want any dust later on. With a small breeze and sunshine, it didn’t take long for the track JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

to come around to near perfect traction though. Just hope you aren’t in moto 1! Trampas changed his starting technique this year. No timing the start like before. That, with the warning of a big loss if you jumped the band and it worked! Much better than previous years. I am writing this article two months after the event, so it would be very hard to give much blowby-blow of the many races that were going on, and I won’t attempt to do a disservice to everyone by just listing finish orders. Those are in the results page at AHRMA. But one class and race I do want to say something about is the 125 vintage expert class. 28

The Jerry and Rider Mattox, father/ son battle for a championship had come down to this last race of the season. And a exciting battle it was. Age and treachery vs youth and exuberance . What will win out?? No lap by lap recounting here... Just a ending that was a TIE. Yes, they were tied. And in an unusual executive decision, it was decided to declare BOTH National Champions. The very first dual Championship awarded! Father and Son! I think this was the right decision and I was so glad to see it happen personally. Something that Trampas and Sherri did that I think needs to be included in all AHRMA events, is they added a 80+ class in the AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

lineup. There were five racers who signed up, but there are definitely more who would be interested in throwing their hat in the ring for future races. As we are all aging up, these age classes become important. These are the members who have supported AHRMA for a long time and deserve to be able to continue racing with their peers with out having to compete against younger healthier 60+ and 70+ young studs. Let your trustees know you support this class! While not an AHRMA class, I must mention the ever popular T&S Okie Wild West team race. This event has grown each year. Over 20 three-man teams competed for JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

the Gold Boot award. Each rider must do three laps and switch. Two motos on Saturday and one moto on Sunday. You can ride either a 100cc 2-stroke or a 200cc 4-stroke. The crowds love it, the riders love it. This special support race is another way for a promoter to bring in those important assets needed to continue running vintage races. After all the races were done on Sunday and everyone had packed up all the equipment and bikes,

tired bodies were washed and clean clothes were donned, it was time to head into town to the Champions Banquet! It is no small feat to get all the scores tallied and plaques made for the 100+ National Champions. Hats off to Terry McPhillips and all the others I don’t know, for the miracle they pull off getting this done. For your $30 ticket cost, you got a great meal prepared by the local Shoney’s restaurant that was first rate. Full course meal, drinks and desert included, and then treated

f you haven’t already heard, there is a newer region in the neighborhood. The AHRMA Heartland Region just finished up their third season of Regional Series races. For those who are not quite sure where the Heartland is, or as we call them in the Midwest, the “flyover states,” you are missing out. We are the heart of the United States, we have a large land region, but a small racer region. The states included are Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri. First off, the Heartland Region would like to thank the race series that allowed us to team up with them these past three years. Without the help of the Missouri Vintage Motocross group (MOVMX), the Great Plains Vintage Motocross group (GPOST VINTAGEMX), and AHRMA Rocky Mountain Region, we would not have had the opportunities to show others what AHRMA Heartland is all about and help

grow the region. The Heartland Region had 86 racers at our standalone events this season. The health of our region is getting stronger every season. To start the 2023 season off, Heartland teamed up with MOVMX to tackle “The Beast” at Benton Speedway in Benton, Missouri on May 5th. The beast lived up to its name, the deep sand and challenging track layout took its toll on all of the racers and bikes. Even the expert riders were struggling to get their bikes through some of the deep hot sand. The novice racers had the opportunity to see what old school motocross was all about, not sure they were all very impressed. It was a hot, exhausting day for the riders and spectators, but the AHRMA guys took home some hardware, some experience, and maybe a little sand too. Thirteen AHRMA racers made the trip to Benton, Missouri,

representing the Heartland Region. Kenny Thexton, racing in the Ultima 125 and Post Vintage 125 Intermediate classes, earned first place in both. Rick Austin racing in the Next Gen and Vintage 60 Novice classes, received a first place in Next Gen and second in Vintage 60. Kevin Tate with a second place in Ultima 125 Intermediate class. Todd Rapp with a first place in Vintage 250 Sportsman Intermediate class. Bill Rockley, receiving first place in Vintage 70, Ultima 4 Stroke and Post Vintage 70 Expert classes. Reed Borgfield and Tim Borgfield placed first and second in Post Vintage 100 Expert, respectively. Jim Voelk, racing in the Next Gen 1 and Vintage 60 Intermediate classes, took home first place in both. Dakotah Winter, first place in Vintage Sportsman and Post Vintage Sportsman Novice classes. Zach Williams, second place in Post Vintage Sportsman and Nate Marcotte, third place in Vintage Sportsman Novice class.

Rich Freund received a first place in Post Vintage 60 Intermediate class. Philip Bush taking home second place in Vintage Sportsman Novice and first place in Vintage 60 Novice. The weekend of June 17th, HLR Motorsports hosted an AHRMA National along with a Heartland Regional Race in Moberly, Missouri. HLR Motorsports has some of the best dirt and track layouts that AHRMA races on in the Midwest. Steve and his staff put on another fantastic event on Father’s Day weekend. Saturday’s track and weather were perfect for vintage motocross. The Heartland Region was well represented with 29 out of 64 racers calling Heartland home. After a good day of racing, HLR hosted a Happy Hour with a cooler of “refreshments” for the racers to cool off and wind down. Later in the evening, it has become an AHRMA tradition to pile into vehicles and head into Moberly to wine and dine at Lula’s Tavern. Sunday, Heartland had 39 out of 63 riders representing the region for the Post Vintage National Event. With the unpredictable 38

Midwestern weather, there was a good chance of rain in the afternoon so motos came early and quickly. After a short break, Mother Nature opened up the heavens and washed out the rest of the days motos. Thanks to Steve for firing up the tractor and giving folks a hand getting out of some pretty soggy situations and getting them safely on the road back home. Thanks to the AHRMA riders who made the trip to the Midwest to support the Heartland Region. It takes a village to make a village. The top regional racers in Moberly were Brian Miller with a first in Vintage Classic 125 and Sportsman 125 Intermediate classes. Jordan Rapp with a first place in Vintage 100 CC Expert class. Philip Bush receiving first place in Vintage Sportsman and Vintage 60 Novice classes. Also receiving first place in two classes, Dakotah Winter raced the Vintage and Post Vintage Novice Open Age classes. Anthony Pupplo with a first in Post Vintage 100 Intermediate and Reed Borgfield taking the first in Post Vintage 100 Expert Class. Intermediate Class while Tim Borgfield took home the first place in the Historic 125 Expert class. Rich Freund walked away with three first places, Historic 250, Post Vintage Open Age and Ultima 250 Intermediate classes. James Sanchez and Jake Gould also took home three first places, Sanchez raced in the Historic 250, Ultima 500 and Post Vintage 50 Expert classes and Gould raced the GP 250, GP 125, and Ultima 125 Expert classes. Topping off the first-place winners is Rick Austin (Ultima Novice), Kent Hanson (Post Vintage 60 Intermediate), Kerry White (NextGen 60) and Kenny Thexton, Ultima 125 and GP 125 Intermediate classes. In August, Heartland joined Kent Taylor and the GPOST VINTAGEMX group in hot dusty Pleasanton, Nebraska. Heartland had seven members running 22 races total show up to challenge the flowing track at Pleasanton MX ground; the track had some new sections added and it was vintage friendly. The race order with GPOST VINTAGEMX had lots of our Heartland riders getting to race head-to-head with each other. There were many close battles JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

between the Heartland members. Also, GPOST VINTAGEMX and MOVMX gave the young ones an opportunity to show off their skills on the tracks. Chris Todd is currently prepping his grandkids to be future AHRMA riders.

KS, home of the famous “Four State Lookout.” Heartland teamed up with GPOST VINTAGEMX again for a fun day of racing. This was a new track for the Heartland Region. Even with some rain and storms the day before, Sunday’s track started out in perfect motocross conditions until the Kansas heat and winds dried up the track and turned it into a mini dustbowl. Even though there was a very small turnout for the Heartland Regional riders, AHRMA was also represented by Angie and Derek Wright from the Southwest AHRMA Region who were in town visiting family.

All riders did exceptionally well at the Pleasanton MX track, bringing home a total of 13 first places, two second places and three third places for the Regional Series. Pleasanton is a fun track, not just for the riders but also the spectators. The class set up with GPOST VINTAGEMX allowed some of AHRMA’s Expert riders to be on the track with the Novice riders, giving them a little bit of old school education. The track is built in the middle of a cow pasture with Nebraska corn to the north. This is a true Midwestern race track with the main part of the track down in a hollow which makes it not only easy but fun for the spectators to watch, and not to mention some of the prettiest sunsets to end your evening.

Even with a small turnout, the Region riders still took home 13 first places for the Regional Series. Jim Voelk took first in Next Gen 500, Ultima 125, Next Gen 1 and Vintage 60 Intermediate classes. James Sanchez brought home first place in Post Vintage 50 and Historic 250 Expert classes. Kenny Thexton took home first in GP 125, Ultima 125 and Post Vintage 50 Intermediate classes. Dakotah Winter took home first place in Vintage and Post Vintage Novice,

The next month, Heartland was off to Whiskey Throttle in White Cloud,

as well as Vintage and Post Vintage Open Age Novice. The final and largest Heartland Regional race was in October at Jeeps Motorcycle Club in Park City, Kansas. With heavy hearts after the loss of Loy Burnett, a Kansas Motocross legend and mentor who had passed away the evening before, there was a large turnout for AHRMA Heartland Region and MOVMX. There was a total of 210 race entries between the two organizations. Jeeps offers a great vintage-friendly track for those of all ages, flat track, cross country, trials and a supercross track. For the Heartland Regional Coordinator, this is his local track so we enjoy being able to spend a day racing at Jeeps. There were 19 AHRMA members in attendance at the race and two future AHRMA riders on mini bikes. Heartland Region riders took home 21 first places, five second places, two third places, a fourth and a fifth place at the end of the day. We had a few riders who came out for their first

2023 Regional race. Dallas Winter, previously injured at a national race in Milliken, Colorado, in May, came out to get warmed up for Combs, Arkansas, and Henryetta, Oklahoma. She took home a first in Vintage and Post Vintage Women’s Intermediate classes. New AHRMA member Phil William made his debut at Jeeps, taking home a third place in the regional race. Fred Mears, Mike Brown, and Dan East also took home first place in Post Vintage 60 Novice,

Ultima 4 Stroke, and NG Novice. Mike Youngberg took a first in Sportsman 500 Intermediate class and second in Vintage 60 Intermediate. to some of the regional riders. There were four classes that were up for grabs, Sportsmanship, Most Improved Rider, Leadership and Star Performer. Bill Rockley was presented with the Leadership Award for 2023; he has been an asset to the younger riders at the Regional races. Dakotah Winter is our Star Performer for 2023; he has come alive on the track since his first race at Heartland in Topeka, KS,

overalls and all. This year he has shined on the track. Zach Williams was awarded the Most Improved Rider for 2023; he has worked hard this past year and his riding techniques and posture have made amazing improvements. Nate Marcotte took home the Sportsmanship Award for 2023; his dedication to being the best he can and never quitting, even on the toughest track, has earned him this award.

or several years now, the spacious and accommodating grounds of the White Rose Motorcycle Club (WRMC) near Spring Grove, Pennsylvania has been providing an exquisite season-ending experience for the participants of AHRMA’s Mid-Atlantic (MA) regional series. The small group of WRMC volunteers, which happen to also be regulars on the MA scene, take great pride in their efforts toward creating a fitting grand finale to an already great year of racing and fun. 2023 would continue their tradition of knocking it out of the park as the facility’s GP style grass track and twisting cross country loop were tweaked and prepped to perfection.

ever-increasing popularity. After an especially wet season of events in the MA region, it seems odd to see that the race surface appears dry, perhaps even dusty! The slight chance of rain that has been forecast for Friday evening would most likely be a welcome course preparation event. Turns out, the rain was pretty much nonexistent, there was dust, but the

weather was generally awesome for late October and supported a festive atmosphere throughout the weekend, and a thankful reprieve from the season’s earlier struggles with foul weather. The MA’s motocross series was the first to take the stage with a Saturday reservation on the grass track up the hill from the

WRMC is blessed with a bountiful and relatively flat pit area where the variety of bike-toting rigs can comfortably claim a plot of land to call home for a few days. Friday afternoon, in the shadow of the club’s signature imposing hill climb, the pits begin to fill for the weekend’s action. Most of the regular “MA family” is present, and quite a few new faces are scattered throughout the growing crowd, surely a good sign of the event’s, and series’,

pits. Over a dozen races in each moto took the rubber band start and set out on the course that essentially mirrored the revamped circuit from the prior year with a few improvements. The sweeping lefthand turn on the front stretch from ’22 was squared off a bit with a more defined entry turn and a straighter shot past the starting line and into turn one. Still a wicked fast affair, be sure to stand up over the dip in the last 50 yards of the straight, especially on a vintage era bike, as you may get a spine rattling jolt through the seat on the g-out at these speeds! Trail boss Brett Reichart burned some diesel in the frontend loader prior to the event as he sculpted some banking and berms into a few of the early corners as well as profiling the handful of drop-off jumps that pepper the course. A lot of the ground used is cut through a field in typical grass track fashion and is hard packed and off camber in some spots. Where not man-made, berms were slow to form, so cornering skills were the key fast lap times. Unlike berms, braking and acceleration bumps were quick to form in the main groove rewarding those able to find a smoother line.

Following the day’s racing, the crowd begins to gather for an awards ceremony to celebrate the racer’s successes for the day. This also kicks off some of the other activities that make the WRMC event a special weekend. As has become tradition, a Halloween costume contest is encouraged, and Saturday brings a few early participants into focus. The most hard-core costumers will ride Sunday’s cross-country event in character. Following the awards, the Mid-Atlantic’s leadership provided a spread of food for all to enjoy in salute to another successful and rewarding year of competition and fellowship. Prior to the dinner, a plethora of emotions swept the crowd as some time was set aside to bid farewell to a long-time member of the Mid-Atlantic family. As we had sadly learned a few rounds earlier, our friend and fellow competitor, Larry Warner had lost his valiant, but all-too-short, battle with cancer. Larry’s wife Anna, son JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

Glen, brother and racer Kyle, and sister-in-law Joelle, were on hand to celebrate Larry’s life with his brotherhood of racers. The family brought some of Larry’s bikes, memorabilia, and a slide show of memories along to share and several MA brethren spoke to their relationship with him. A brilliant fabricator, collector, racer, and funny, gentle, caring man, Larry will be missed greatly. Godspeed, friend. As Sunday’s cross-country racers queued themselves into the starting area without Larry’s 17B Yamaha in the 50+ Expert row, it is a good reminder to us all that life is short and unpredictable, race (or whatever else you enjoy) when you can and while you can. And, if you can race at a place as awesome as WRMC, even better. While the property is expansive, the existing trail network essentially covers the entire available area, so the chance that a trail will be reused from year-to-year is high. But those trails are excellent and are plentiful enough that each year’s event is a unique experience. You recognize the different available trails from year’s past, but the manner in which they are connected, direction run, and approach taken to the property in general make all the difference in the course’s feel. You know that at some point you will cross the hill climb’s breakers, you know that a rip through the motocross section on top of that hill will draw plenty of spectators, and you know that there will be bunches of flowy single track following the variety of elevation that the property provides. Always a great time, and this iteration was no exception. My feeling after the checkered flag falls at WRMC is, “when can we do it again?!”. And with that, the checkered flag falls on another awesome season of racing old bikes with great people at cool places, to which I also say, ”when can we do it all again?!”.
