A Word From The Editors

New Beginnings BY TERESA MARBOE, AIA AND KATIE CHEVALIER, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

Welcome to the winter issue. Don’t let the 70 degree weather fool you - here at ArchPLUS, we refuse to leave the land of snowmen and hot chocolate. We may have fallen behind on our New Year’s resolution to meet our publishing deadlines, but better late than never, we are resolved to deliver a magazine that serves as an ongoing discussion of the intersection of architecture and our Westchester/Hudson Valley community. Beginning with this issue, Katie Chevalier, AIA, LEED Ap bd+c and I have been assigned as interim co-editors of ArchPLUS. We are both members of the chapter’s Board of Directors and the EP Committee, and are excited to take on the new challenge. Before you read any further, we want to extend a boundless thank you to Peter Gaito, Jr., AIA for all of his work over the past three years. Peter grew ArchPLUS from our newsletter, General Notes which was organized by Stuart Markowitz, AIA for many years. Peter had the idea to push the limits and develop the newsletter into a quarterly magazine publication. The publication has received such positive feedback from not only our members but many professionals within the design industry. Peter laid an exceptionally strong foundation for the magazine over the past several years, and we look forward to building upon that legacy and continuing to provide you with stimulating and relevant commentary on our chapter and our profession. We can’t continue to grow the publication without expanding our behind-the-scenes team which produces the magazine. We are reaching out to all members, especially Emerging Professionals, to join our layout team. Not interested in graphics but enjoy reading articles? We also need proofers to review the articles submitted each quarter for publication. Enjoy doing interviews? We are looking for someone for that role as well. If you are interesting in participating, please email the chapter office (vbrown@aiawhv.org) and look out for an announcement of a meeting for all new volunteers. We hope you can join the team.

6 ArchPLUS Winter 2017

As always, we are looking for new voices to add to our dedicated group of contributers. Is there an issue you wish we could examine collectively as a profession? Do you have an innovative way of working or a new technology to share? Are you tired of feeling your emails don’t properly showcase your mastery of the written word? We are calling on all writers to contribute to what we hope will be a living document of the most pressing issues of our profession in the year 2017. Drop us a line using the submission form on the chapter website (www.aiawhv.org/archplus), and let us know what content you are interested in creating. This could be in the form of short pieces, lengthy articles, sketches or even cartoons. Our upcoming issues are Workplace (spring), Next Generation (summer), and Stranger Things (fall). See the content ad on page 47 for detailed requirements on article submissions Inside this issue, you will find our yearly showcase of exceptional design work produced by our chapter members. Special thanks are due to Nic Mariscal, Associate AIA, who for the third year in a row has curated this issue and produced the entirety of the design awards layouts. This collection of drawings the award-winning projects from the 2016 Design Awards, presented in October. This marks the second year that all entries were designed by chapter members, resulting in a truly great representation of our collective design prowess. Watch for our next issue when you will hear from Katie. Until then, dive into this issue and start thinking about your design awards submittal for 2017. Enjoy!

President’s Perspective

It Takes One BY MICHAEL BERTA, AIA

In 2016 we celebrated 80 years as a chapter. Today, as we enter 2017, we are at an all-time membership high and are continuing our efforts to be a resource to both members and the industry as a whole. The momentum is reflective of the dedication we’ve seen from Manuel Andrade, AIA, our Past-President, the 2016 Board of Directors, and all the past and present volunteers. The 2016 Design Awards at Regeneron was a sample of the talent and dedication our members have for creating the spaces we live in. As most of you know, this year we changed the submission guidelines to require firms submitting for the AIA WHV Design Awards to be from within our chapter area. From residential homes, to the schools our children learn in, to public spaces, to projects that are environmentally friendly, it is clear, that our members are serious about what we do. For all of this and more, I am honored to be your 2017 President. When I look at the work and passion applied to both our design and our participation with AIA, I urge everyone to “Take 5”. It’s the idea to take 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, whatever “5” is, your participation is invaluable. One “yes” to a challenging project, one “okay” to volunteer, one hour with a class of students, one day in DC, and on and on. All of these numbers add up to a lasting impact on your work, your organization, your children and their friends, and your industry. For example ten years ago, I went to the AIA National Convention in Miami and that was my beginning. The Executive Director of AIA Westchester Hudson Valley, Valerie Brown, reached out to myself and others, as she does each year, to invite chapter members attending the convention to meet with the current board members.

8 ArchPLUS Winter 2017

One conversation later I had my first moment of participation as a member and now I am reaching out to you as the Chapter President. In 2016, I became a mentor for the Ace Mentor Program, working with high school students. The meaningful experience was enriching and impactful. I ask you to think about what being part of AIA means to you and think about what you can pass down to the next generation of design professionals. I challenge you to “Take 5”. We can all note these moments in our career. It’s essential we provide them to the next generation. Giving them the opportunity to have milestones that impact their careers for the rest of their lives. Gifting a child the creativity, the insight to recognized projects and to a challenging “yes” and the rewards, is essential to the growth of our industry. As we start 2017, we have our largest numbers of young professionals belonging and engaging in the chapter. As we have in years past, we are offering two scholarships to currently enrolled students. Our emerging professional group has been hard at work and offers their own scholarship program to reimburse the cost of taking the ARE exam as well as partial monthly scholarships. They are also giving away partial and complete sets of the Brightwood study guides. Show up at one of their sponsored monthly happy hours to learn more or read about the program in the EP corner of this month’s issue. We will be furthering our lobbying efforts at both local and state levels. It’s our goal to provide our members with the resources to operate, as a unified voice, with an agenda, and an itinerary to meet

with local and state officials. With the voice and expertise of our membership, we are addressing items such as Design Liability Reform (statute of repose), Historic Tax credit, Distressed Properties tax credits (residential & commercial) & the emergency responder act. As most of you have read in our past issues and know from previous participation, the chapter’s past 80 years are full of milestones that have influenced the careers of many design professionals. Congratulations to all the 2016 Design Award recipients; thank you for your inspiration and expertise. Thank you to each of you for your passion. Please do not hold back your passions, your ideas, your interest in committees…we need all the voices we can get. As we move into 2017, I look forward to “Take 5” and hearing from you while serving as your chapter president and seeing imaginations come to life.

12 ArchPLUS Winter 2017

2016 CELEBRATION OF ARCHITECTURE 2016 was the first year in which one hundred percent of the design awards recognized architects with prac•ces in our chapter. In 2016 the eligibility requirements were changed to refocus the awards on local architects. Even with the more restric•ve eligibility criteria, over thirty projects were submi•ed for considera•on. The projects represented the diversity of project types indica•ve of our chapter’s prac•ces: from single family residen•al, to corporate headquarter, to community improvements, to historic restora•ons. Twelve projects were selected for awards equally distributed between Cita•ons, Honor Awards, and High Honor Awards. The jury was held at the offices of Kuhn Riddle Architects in Amherst, MA. The Celebra•on of Architecture Gala was held on October 20th, at the Regeneron headquarters in Tarrytown New York, designed by Perkins + Will. The building received a High Honor award in the 2015 design awards program and was a perfect venue to celebrate architecture. The a•endees were treated to a tour of the facility, a terrific cocktail hour, and an well-choreographed presenta•on ceremony. The Jury: called the project “simple, striking and straigh"orward”, with strong exterior massing, materials, and contrasts, and elegant, day-lit interiors. They felt that the exterior materials were brought inside with excellent, clean detailing, and that the clean aesthe•c and durable materials should last both physically and stylis•cally. They noted that the plan of the offices is “edgy like a knife”, exemplifying “precision and elegance”. And the jury appreciated the sustainability methods: reuse, PVs, low budget, durable materials, natural dayligh•ng.

HISTORIC + INSTITUTIONAL

HIGH HONOR AWARD: Bronxville Schools Auditorium ARCHITECT: KG&D Architects LOCATION: Bronxville, New York The goal of the Bronxville Schools Auditorium was to restore the beauty and func!onality of the original auditorium while incorpora!ng 21st Century elements to create a mul!-use space for the Bronxville community. SpeciďŹ c goals included: maximizing sea!ng capacity and performance space, improving sightlines and the overall acous!cs of the space and crea!ng a separate space for public access. The Jury: described this project as a drama!c transforma!on that respects the exis!ng context. It’s a though#ul and appropriate interven!on into an exis!ng space, while reorganizing circula!on. They praised the elegant integra!on and accessible func!on, and that the interior aesthe!c blends beau!fully with exis!ng restored wood ceiling detailing, while the exterior addi!on is so seamless that in a few years it might be thought to be original.

INSTITUTIONAL

HIGH HONOR AWARD: Trevor Day School ARCHITECT: Peter Gisolfi Associates, Architects + Landscape Architects, LLP LOCATION: New York, New York Trevor Day School was designed for a 100 x 100 " site on the south side of East 95th Street. The 210foot tall, 110,000 sf building accommodates 600-700 students in grades 7–12. The 85-foot masonry base, 125-foot glass tower, terraces, and roo"op playground create a Ver#cal Campus. Trevor Day is sustainable, technologically innova#ve, and is pursuing LEED Pla#num. A significant por#on of electrical energy will be supplied by photovoltaic panels a$ached to a trellis of solar collectors shading the roo"op playground. It is heated and cooled with a closed loop “energy pile” geothermal system, the first of its kind on the East Coast. The Jury: had much to say about the crea#ve solu#on for this incredibly #ght site, including its straigh%orward, pleasing modern aesthe#c, clean and appropriate scale at the street level, and how the Zero lot line façade ‘works’, as wells as the capping frame on top. They were excited to read a ‘sustainable’ and ‘performance’ narra#ve backed by numbers, and imagined that obtaining approvals for the Energy pile loop must have been challenging in NYC, and therefore impressive. They noted the nice presenta#on, and finally, that it looks like a fun place to learn!

HIGH HONOR AWARD: Wax House ARCHITECT: Mark Rolfs, Partner, Rolfs Elert Office LOCATION: Usonia, Pleasantville, New York

Rolfs Elert Office and their client took on the stewardship this home, embarking on a crea"ve problem solving journey - seeking to preserve the Usonian sensibility embodied in the Resnick design, while balancing the prac"cal requirements of a modern home. The infrastructure needs of the project resulted in a substan"al demoli"on down to the frame, from which the home was restored and expanded. Though#ully integrated current technologies and reclaimed materials make the home comfortable and efficient while preserving historic character. The Jury: hailed this project as a wonderful transforma"on, a very sensi"ve and respec#ul treatment of Usonian House. They viewed the before and a$er images are striking, and admired how the small addi"ons and landscaping enhanced the connec"on to the site

The ďŹ nished design features layers of industrial textures, and by reorganizing the spaces, enhances the panoramic Manha"an skyline. HONOR AWARD: 3333 Broadway Entry Plaza ARCHITECT: Gallin Beeler Design Studio Architects LOCATION: New York, New York This project is the re-imagina!on, reconfigura!on and renova!on of the front entry plaza of 3333 Broadway in West Harlem. The exis!ng plaza was configured so the building entry was hidden, crea!ng unsafe condi!ons. The new plaza connects the building entry to the intersec!on of 135th Street and Broadway. HONOR AWARD: Brise Soleil ARCHITECT: J. Taylor Design Group LOCATION: Scarsdale, New York This home was designed as an energy efficient, light filled retreat for a family of five on a block across from a noisy parkway. Its form evolved from two essen#al factors: sun and sound. Inverted “L” shaped brise soleils clad in white stucco shield the south facade from excessive heat gain while diffusing ambient light through to the back of the house. The main living spaces open to the back of the house, shielded from the parkway noise. The Jury: applauded the though%ul solu#on for the problems at hand, as well as the home’s elegant style. They noted the excellent presenta#on, especially the shading analysis and the neighborhood context images. They debated the curved roof at the back.

MUNICIPAL

CITATION: New Canaan Town Hall ARCHITECT: KSQ LOCATION: New Canaan, Connec!cut

New Canaan Town Hall’s 1909 Colonial Revival façade was restored, and a historical analysis and inventory were completed before an interior renova!on. The modern, two-story addi!on incorporates generous glass areas, promo!ng dayligh!ng and transparency in town hall business. Town Hall is now ADA complaint, more customer-service oriented, up to modern technology standards, and offers more parking, security, ligh!ng and safety. Ten departments were expanded and modernized. The project was completed on !me and under budget. The Jury: intuited the concept of transparency in government expressed in the design. They appreciated the straigh#orward restora!on of exis!ng building, that the addi!on appropriately didn’t compete with the historic fabric, as well as the design’s clean interiors and comfortable spaces. The project appears to have been a good value for $388/sf on a municipal project

RESIDENTIAL

CITATION: Dogwood Residence ARCHITECT: Ferguson Malone Architecture LOCATION: Irvington, New York

Situated on a sloped, rocky site, this new residence was designed to meet the needs of a young family with a background in film and a fondness for west coast modernism. To take advantage of the expansive southern views and accommodate the need for onsite parking, the living level was posi"oned on the top floor with family and guest bedrooms below. The building is organized around a spine-like central stair which is intended to connect the user with the original grade of the site. Each level has direct access to grade. The Jury: understood how the home accomplished the owner’s desire for a Hollywood Hills like residence. They praised its massing, sec"ons and eleva"ons, and noted that the integra"on with sloping site was well-accomplished, achieving both views and privacy

UNBUILT

CITATION: North Bellmore Library ARCHITECT: Gallin Beeler Design Studio Architects LOCATION: North Bellmore, New York

This project is a renova!on and expansion of the mid-century North Bellmore Public Library on Long Island. Cramped, outdated and lacking cohesiveness due to a non-compa!ble 1980’s addi!on, the Library will receive a gut renova!on and a 4,500 sf glass “wrapper” that provides much needed new func!onal areas for department expansion and a unified architectural expression. The “closed in” nature of the original architecture will be transformed to be open, transparent and connected to the surrounding community. The Jury: enjoyed the ‘zippy’ presenta!on, with its great diagrams of design approach and thinking, and the good sustainability narra!ve and diagram. They viewed the design as successfully masking the exis!ng building, and appreciated its good use of light.

CITATION: Pocket Change Communi•es ARCHITECT: Wilson Architects, Inc, Osgood Landscape Architecture, Chris•na Griffin Architect, PC LOCATION: Egremont, Massachuse"s Asheville, North Carolina San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Pocket Change Community is a model living collec•ve where every aspect is shaped by principles of conserva•on and environmental context. Affordable and sustainable small homes and a gathering center have been designed to foster a deep sense of connec•on among the residents, and to support local farming local adjacent to the pocket. The development team is in the process of seeding three Pocket Change prototype communi•es: one in Egremont, MA, the others in Asheville, NC and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The Jury: praised the lovely co"ages and site diagrams, the nice grouping on the site, and the strong sustainability concepts. They were concerned about how the architecture would respond to the three very different sites and climates proposed (MA, NC, Mexico). They considered the community centers as strong features of the projects, but would encourage a stronger connec•on to regional influences from the co"ages as those designs develop.

Professionals from the design field once again joined the chapter for the evening to celebrate the chapter’s accomplishments and to celebrate various individuals and companies accomplishments which contributed to the chapter’s success, not only for this year, but for the past 80 years. For the third year in a row, attendees were able to tour the back of house of the beautiful Capitol Theatre. This is always a highlight of the evening for attendees. In addition to the evening’s honors, chapter President surprised our Executive Director, Valerie Brown, thanking her for her twenty years of service to the chapter. Valerie has been a part of the chapter for a quarter o it’s history. Each of us should personally thank her when we see her for all she does for our chapter. Live music was once again provided by Patchen Roberts, who were joined by one of our own Board Members, Jason Taylor, AIA, as they were heavily requested after their performance last year. We hope to see them again at the next Soiree. Special recognitions honored during the presentation included:

• Professional Affiliate Award: Land Use Law Center • Public Official Award: Paul Kutzy, PE, Assistant Commissioner • Chapter Member Award: Stuart Markowitz, AIA, LEEDap • Public Advocate Award: This House Matters • ARE Scholarship Award: Robert Texiera, Assoc. AIA The Soiree has become not only a time to celebrate our achievements for the year, but also to honor an Associate from our chapter for their participation and efforts to complete the Architectural Registration Exam. This year’s scholarship was awarded to Robert Texiera from Gallin Beeler Design Studio. Soiree 81 will once again take place this coming year in December.
