T

here is more to the Cayman Islands than just beautiful beaches and balmy year-round weather — it also happens to have a flourishing film industry. CayFilm, the official film festival

of the Cayman Islands, was held in Grand Cayman from June 18–20, 2015. Launched in 2014, the festival was designed to promote the Cayman Islands as a world-class filming destination. It also aims to expose the Cayman Islands to the film industry around the world, while in turn exposing the world to Cayman’s young and aspiring filmmakers. The three-day festival featured daily film screenings, question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, panel discussions, workshops and a celebrity gala event. In addition, there was an exclusive, VIP-only premiere screening of Serena, starring Bradley Cooper and

Jennifer Lawrence. There were plenty of fun events for

Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans) to rising stars Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids trilogy, Sin City 2), Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) and Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass, The Wedding Ringer) to established names in both TV and movies, such as Rick Gomez (Sin City,

Ray, Transformers, Band of Brothers) and Reno Wilson (“Mike & Molly,”

such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last — was honoured for outstanding achievement in screenwriting. Young talent was also given the opportunity to shine. Students across the Cayman Islands were invited to submit their short films for the the Young Image Makers (YIM) Short Film Competition. In addition, CayFilm has developed the Cayman Media Academy, which will offer film-related educational opportunities to Cayman‘s budding filmmakers.
