WELCOME Friends of IGY, Welcome to the August 2011 newsletter! Like all of us hard at work, IGY strives to find the best method of communication with its customers and colleagues. How do you prefer to be contacted? From where we’re standing, it seems that Facebook has become insanely popular in communicating with the yachting world, all over the world, really. To that point, we got our Facebook act together. We’ve added a more interactive platform for users to reserve a berth, learn about our marinas through video, register for the Anchor Club and soon to come, contests and industry-related polls so we can see what we’re all thinking. Drop us a line on our page, and let us know what you think! www.facebook.com/IGYmarinas.

IGFA Saltwater Adventures Tours IGY Marinas BILL BOYCE, PRODUCER AND HOST OF THE IGFA SALTWATER ADVENTURES ON THE WORLD FISHING NETWORK WROTE A PLAY-BY-PLAY OF ALL THE STOPS THEY MADE AT OUR MARINAS WHILE FILMING THE NEW SERIES.
Anytime you shoot a TV fishing series, it is imperative you find great places to fish and have
great people to fish with. In our first season of the new World Fishing Network series, IGFA Saltwater Adventures, we were lucky enough to have IGY Marinas bless us with a sponsorship. I say “blessed” because that is what the relationship quickly became. As the executive producer and host of the series, you want to find locations that will appear positive to your viewers. That doesn’t just mean the fishing has to be good, it also means the total experience has to be worthy of attention. Because the IGFA Saltwater Adventures is shot in a travel/ fishing style of venue, we like to take the travel experience we film to the audience to the point they almost feel like they are with us on vacation. After shooting 4 separate episodes in different IGY locations, we accomplished that feat with “high fives” all around!
ST. LUCIA
Rodney Bay Marina
First we started in St. Lucia, not a bad place to do just that. Of course the island is gorgeous and Rodney Bay Marina is a first class operation under the watchful eye of Adam Foster as marina manager. Rodney Bay is not only a fabulous location for a marina, it happens to have an amazing history of Spanish and English turmoil that dates back to the 1600’s. The only turmoil we experienced was that of being hooked up to several blue marlin and losing one beast that was easily 600 pounds. We fished with Captain Bruce Hackshaw on the HACK ATTACK, and good to his promise, we caught blue marlin, dolphin (mahi mahi), and wahoo for the episodes. A great cooking segment, done at The Harmony Suites, included the IGY marina representatives, Adam Foster, GM, and marketing/sales guru, Portia Mogal. The scenic beauty and the amazing fishing made this show a great success. Montauk In terms of U.S. mariner history, few U.S. ports have more than Montauk, New York. President George Washington commissioned the Montauk Lighthouse in 1796 and the port never stopped building its reputation as a world renowned fishing destination. A great mix of inshore and offshore fishing make it a perfect place for small craft boaters and large super sport fishers. We were welcomed from the first minute we arrived by IGY marina/Montauk Yacht Club General Manager, Lloyd Van Horn who showed us what a complete marina, dining, and hotel experience the facility provides. It quickly proved the perfect mix of each. We fished with local legend Ron Ororato whose knowledge of the striped bass that inhabit “the point” was impressive to say the least. We caught and released over 30 striped bass in two half days of fishing which blew our expectations away, almost as much as those we anticipated at the IGY Marina. ››
EVENTS St. Thomas In marlin fishing circles, when offshore sport fishing is discussed, few international locations raise the eye brows like St. Thomas. The full moons of summer bring marlin to their most active feeding cycles and the angling there is nothing short of world class. When we filmed an episode out of American Yacht Harbor, it too proved to be world class. Marina manager Joe Walling made the experience seamless, and our appreciation is greatly extended. Fishing in April is never expected to be the caliber found on those summer moons, but Capt. Jonathan of Double Header Sport Fishing put us on an amazing tuna and dolphin bite off the North Wall that made for riveting TV. We did get a marlin to eat a lure a few times, but it never stuck around long enough to become a movie star. We toured the island and left with the sense that St. Thomas, and the IGY marinas were worthy of their reputations. Cabo San Lucas
Yacht Haven Grande
No other location in the world can boast a year-round marlin fishery with the angling success proven time and again like that found at “lands end” on the Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas. The once sleepy cannery town has blossomed into a MUST SEE destination in the matter of only 30 years. Few places in the world have a marina facility that can handle this quantity of boats and is in walking-distance to some of the best night life and entertainment in the sport fishing industry. Any rumors you may have heard about the safety of travelling in Mexico can quickly be dispelled in this port. The local economy is run very efficiently by the interest in sport fishing, golf, boating, and relaxation, as IGY customer service representative, Jesus Esquitel pointed out. We had the time of our lives without any issues or insecure feelings. We fished with the POCHOS Charter fleet that operates out of the IGY marina and the fishing was nothing short of miraculous. In two days, we released 4 striped marlin and had three shots at a 200lb swordfish to make this episode, and epic adventure. I was extremely impressed with every IGY marina we visited, and I look forward to repeating those experiences as soon as humanly possible. May I personally thank Bert Fowles, and everyone involved with making our IGFA Saltwater Adventures shows a reality at IGY this season. We are certain we will make you as proud…as you made us.

Costa Rica Fishing Tournament a Success
Cuthbert Didier: Director of Yachting, St. Lucia As IGY works closely with the tourism board in St. Lucia to cultivate yachting, we had the opportunity to ask the director some key questions about what that entails…
At the first annual Presidential Papagayo Cup hosted by Marina Papagayo, Costa Rica, the waters were teeming with plenty of sailfish, ready to provide all the angling excitement for which this region is world famous. Emerging victorious in the event was Sea Angel, a team that’s dominating the Costa Rican billfishing season this year. With previous wins in both the Presidential Challenge of Costa Rica and the first leg of the Los Suenos Signature Series, Greg and “Mamalu” Angel, fishing with their sons Austin in the cockpit and BC at the helm, came to town ready to fish against the best teams in the Pacific. Having finished as the High Point Team between the Presidential Challenge of Costa Rica and Presidential Papagayo Cup tournaments, they tallied an amazing 5,200 points between the two events. The team will have their names engraved on the Perpetual Trophy, which will be permanently displayed at Marina Papagayo. Marina Papagayo, an IGY destination, proved to be an outstanding location for an international sportfishing tournament like the Presidential series. With 180 slips for vessels upwards of 220 feet in length, in addition to 24-hour security, high-speed fuel services and much more, the marina catered to everyone’s needs. Located within the protected waters of the Bahia de Culebra and just 30 minutes from the international airport in Liberia, Marina Papagayo has much to offer visitors. A total of 136 sailfish were released by the whole fleet, all using tournament-required non-offset circle hooks, and a donation was made to The Billfish Foundation for $2,800 on behalf of the event, which represented the proceeds from the optional jackpot. For more information on the tournament, visit www.preschallenge.com and for more info on the marina please visit www.marinapapagayo.com.

Mr. Didier, please tell us about some of your responsibilities as the Director of Yachting in St. Lucia. Firstly, the goal is to develop a national policy for the yachting sector in the country, while strategically fostering its growth. To do this, the relevant legislation and regulations must be put in place. What are some key strategic partnerships that you formed that have benefited from the program so far? We work closely with the Division of Maritime Affairs and any other relevant stake holders to ensure the establishment of a yachting registry, the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority, as well as the Marine Industries Association of Saint Lucia. We also work with Rodney Bay Marina on various ways to encourage vessels to visit. What are your biggest challenges? My biggest challenges are coordinating efforts between the various government ministries in Saint Lucia. The yachting sector regulatory framework includes at least 5 ministries and it is a challenge to have them all on the same page. What are some changes you anticipate in Saint Lucia? The review of customs procedures to allow for smooth and effective processing with respect to the clearance of yachts; clear guidelines on issuing visas for persons arriving on yachts; to provide the necessary incentives that would allow for the expansion of better facilities for repairing, provisioning, fueling and servicing of yachts. There is much to be done, but we are well on our way to becoming the yachting rival of the BVIs! What are your hopes for the country? My hopes for this great small island called Saint Lucia is to create a sustainable, diversified economy that will allow key touristic sectors such as yachting to boost; the creation of more jobs, and for Saint Lucia to continue to develop and mature into a fully functioning democratic state.
