Boat Show Banter
fliBs 2010 Was a WhirlWinD of activity and networking for IGY. We would truly like to thank those who came by our booth – from the pictures it’s clear you enjoyed yourselves and came away with a good idea of what IGY has planned for 2011. All of our marina managers came over to Ft. Lauderdale as well as representatives from our newest IGY destinations – Boston Yacht Haven, Marina Santa Marta and Palmas del Mar Yacht Club – everyone had great things to say about the show. If you attended the Dockwalk Party, then you know what a success that was. Bimini Boatyard was packed with captains and crew. A good time was had by all and we look forward to another successful collaboration next year. The Yacht Chandler’s Save our Seas party was also a great time had by all. The art that was sold – thanks to auctioneer and co-owner, James James – was a slew of oversized underwater images that seemed to
fly out the door. The party had a record attendance with over 2,500 and raised over $23,000 dollars for the Save Our Seas Foundation. Saturday night of the show was the National Marine Mardi Gras BBQ, where party-goers had the chance to show their creative chops through their costumes. It actually felt like a real mardi gras celebration – beads and all. We also attended and sponsored the Seakeeper’s Soiree, an event that gathers the movers and shakers behind keeping our oceans safe and clean. As much fun as FLIBS can be, the question on everyone’s mind is: was it a successful show? We look forward to checking out the analytics that are most likely still being compiled by the experts.

The Baja Ha-Ha The annual two-week rally for cruisers takes off from San Diego and makes its way down the coast to the Marina Cabo San Lucas annually. Now it its 17th year, the rally can proudly boast that over 2,000 boats have participated to date. For 750 miles starting on October 24th with stops in Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria, cruisers coast the coast, make new friends and safely get to Mexico by the 6th of November. The event is open to all boats over 27 feet that were designed, built and have been maintained for open ocean sailing. Longtime sponsor of the Baja Ha-Ha, Marina Cabo San Lucas accommodated 94 boats that requested slips this year upon finishing the rally. Registration for next year will most likely be in May 2011. 2010 St. Lucia Billfish Tournament: what Hurricane? Blue marlin caught by magic lady on trip back to st. lucia from martinique; she was tail wrapped. They tried hard to revive her but to no avail.
Plans Were maDe anD eVerYone Was in PlaCe and ready to go for the St. Lucia Billfish Tournament. But on Oct 29th when the boats began to arrive to the IGY Rodney Bay Marina an unwanted guest called Hurricane Tomas was approaching and ready to change those plans. The organizers and anglers however, had another plan – that the tournament must go on! And that it did. On Monday evening, with 30 boats and over 125 anglers, H2O restaurant was the venue for the captain’s briefing and IGY Manager’s Welcome. The following morning after breakfast, all boats began the tournament with the traditional bimini start just outside the marina with the helicopter photo op and Wednesday, the final fishing day, began at 6am and ended with lines up at 4pm. Held at the newly renovated Bread Basket with Chef Richardson, the awards ceremony ended the event with a surprise from winner Steve Rolland. After receiving his cash prize, he made an incredible offer to St. Lucia by donating his prize money to the disaster relief. This gift extended to all of the other cash prize winners and, in the end, over EC$16,000.00 was raised for Soufriere assistance. The best overall boat, last year’s winner Par T Time of Trinidad & Tobago, has once again won a beautiful bronze trophy and an invitation to the IGFA World Championships in 2011 held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The team participated in this year’s championships on behalf of St. Lucia and they have confirmed that they will compete again next year. Congratulations!
