The award is given to organizations that show an unfailing dedication to improving the security of the maritime industry. “IGY has consistently shown that security is a core discipline of their marina operations,” said Philip J. Murray, Chairman of the Maritime Security Council. “IGY’s commitment to sound security practices and to enhancing the security awareness of its clients, and the yachting community as a whole, make them the obvious choice for this year’s Maritime Security Council Distinguished Service Award.”

Yacht Haven Grande joins the Make-A-Wish Foundation

officer J’Len

“if you couLD havE anything you want, what would you wish for?” That question was posed to a young Virgin Islander by volunteers from the MakeA-Wish Foundation. Without hesitation, J’Len said, “I want to be a police officer.” From that point on, a team of volunteers worked to make J’Len’s dream come true. On January 27, 2011, J’Len went to Police Headquarters, was sworn in as a police officer, given a badge and uniform and then driven-via police motorcade to Yacht Haven Grande where there was a “robbery” in progress. “Terrible Tom”, played by local attorney Tom Volt, struck first at Gucci and then headed east with Officer J’Len in hot pursuit. After a quick stop at BCBG, Terrible Tom was ap-

prehended in Louis Vuitton, where J’Len admonished the crook, telling him, “You have to stop this. You have to be a good Virgin Islander.” Followed by a gaggle of admiring fans, J’Len then headed to Yacht Haven Grande’s Esplanade where he was made an honorary member of Yacht Haven Grande’s security team. He was showered with giftsincluding his own YHG security uniform, certificates for dining at W!kked and Fat Turtle as well as an autographed football from Super Bowl champion, Roland Williams. As Officer J’Len was whisked away to receive congratulations from the Governor, it was hard to tell who had more fun – Officer J’Len or those who made it happen.

The NEW IGY Anchor Club nEvEr bEforE has a loyalty program been offered to megayacht captains through a marina network, which is why we took the opportunity to re-vamp the IGY Anchor Club program, truly giving our customers what they deserve – rewards just for staying with an IGY marina. The impetus behind the re-launch came to us when we realized the importance of dedicating a specialist to the program – someone who can nurture it and

help it grow. Deb Capone, our marketing arm in St. Thomas and Montauk has crafted a program that is sure to take off. The new program has its own dedicated website with an endless online catalog of gifts, travel opportunities, sailing gear and much more. The program will launch at the IGY crew party with Dockwalk magazine on February 18, during the Miami boat show at Waxy O’Connor’s (see page 1). www.igyanchorclubrewards.com

EVENTS

USSA Annual Captain’s Briefing: A Recap

Each year, Superyacht captains and senior crew gather for the USSA Captain’s Briefing and this year, over 125 were present. IGY’s Yacht Club at Isle de Sol in St. Maarten played host to the 6th annual meeting, which included a state-of-the-industry address from Billy Smith of Trinity Yachts - the sponsor of the event, followed by a panel discussion of the Maritime Labour Convention held by Smith, Peter Southgate of the Cayman Islands Registry and Gene Sweeny of the Marshall Islands Registry. “Two-thirds of the yards in the U.S. did not receive orders in 2009,” said Smith. “Most yards are living on their backlog, and at some point, this business must be replaced…you’ve heard it before, but

we’re cautiously optimistic.” The event was interactive, discussions were flowing and so were the drinks, as the cocktail parties became a great networking event. Also present, the Maritime Security Council gave an update on the latest discussions that occurred at the Yacht Industry Security Conference, in collaboration with IGY, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Homeland Security Institute, which took place at Yacht Haven Grande, St. Thomas on January 12&13. The event focused on identifying security best practices appropriate to the yachting industry and improving the lines of communication between the yachting community and the regulatory agencies. “It’s important that we continue to foster a stronger relationship between the owners, captain and crew that transit the waters of the Caribbean and the agencies that are responsible for keeping nations and territorial waters safe for us all,” Philip Murray, President of the MSC said. “We can only do this if we enhance the lines of communication and continue to recognize that security awareness is a responsibility we all must participate in.”

Rodney Bay Marina Gives Back During November and December of 2010, IGY Rodney Bay Marina hosted the 25th Annual ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), which was described as the best experience to date by several repeat participants. On the November 21st, 233 boats departed from Grand Canaria to St. Lucia with 1048 participants. The first boat arrived on the 7th of December and IGY RBM, ARC and the St. Lucia Tourist Board collaborated on a host of events surrounding the rally. IGY RBM created an ARC Village with a cultural theme focusing on local products and food & beverage provided by our valued tenants. The ARC village ran from 10th December to the 17th with sponsors, tenants and vendors all contributing to the entertainment activities. On a more giving note, IGY and Rodney Bay Marina are assisting the education sector in St. Lucia by sponsoring the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College French Club (FROG) for their annual language immersion program in Martinique. The one-week trip was a full success with three days at Le Marin College following classes in French and a one-day visit at the University. The students, Martinique families who kindly hosted them as well as the teachers of the Lycée were all emotional at the departure.
