ABOUT AICC
PROVIDING BOXMAKERS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO THRIVE IN THE PAPER-BASED PACKAGING INDUSTRY SINCE 1974
We are a growing membership association that serves independent corrugated, folding carton, and rigid box manufacturers and suppliers with education and information in print, in person, and online. AICC membership is for the full company, and employees at all locations have access to member benefits. AICC offers free online education to all members to help the individual maximize their potential and the member company maximize its profit.
WHEN YOU INVEST AND ENGAGE, AICC DELIVERS SUCCESS.
Here’s to Our Ground Crew
In my introductory column in the November/December 2024 issue of BoxScore, I shared my theme as AICC chair for the year as “Fly the Plane.”
You, as the business owner or anyone in any responsible position in the organization, must metaphorically fly the plane—always. You must run your business.
Even though you may not be a trained pilot, we’ve all traveled enough to know that while the pilot is the most recognizable person for the success and the safety of the flight, they do not get the plane off the ground alone. There is the contribution of an entire team.
This is AICC’s eighth Big Associate Issue. AICC’s Associate members are, in keeping with my theme, the ground crew.
The ground crew are critical partners with the pilot in the success of the flight, in the success of our businesses. They build the plane, they maintain it, they supply it, they improve and upgrade it for more efficient operation, they train the flight crew.
Ground crews do all of these things to ensure a successful flight, just as our Associate members contribute to the success of our businesses. It is vitally necessary for AICC Associate members to be the ground crew for the general members.
AICC, too, is an important part of any ground crew. For Package Crafters and Creative Packaging, AICC brings together the pilots and a vast ground crew and provides a unique forum for them to interact, regardless of the weather or business conditions ahead.
Think of this issue as your flight operations manual. Thank you to our ever-important Associates for being our ground crew.

Latest facts you should know about Scrap & Dust Systems
For the past 41 years, ASDI has been providing quality Pneumatic Conveying and Mechanical Belt Conveying Systems for the Corrugated Paper Industry. There are several types of systems being “turnkeyed” in this industry. The most popular over the past few years are the cyclone system, the indoor separator system, and the mechanical conveyor in a trench system.
For the Sheet Plants, the sequential system using one fan for as many as four machines has offered them savings on the electrical power and starting investment by using less CFM. Regardless of the type of system that is used, ASDI provides a design that is safe and maximizes the production for each machine.
Corrugator Plants themselves are now using shredders in different areas of the corrugator. ASDI has installed shredders at the “rotary shear” section and the waste eject at the “cut-off knife” area. ASDI has used a wide conveyor to take reject sheets from one area to another allowing the use of one shredder instead of two. More shredders are being used at the wet end as well. The new plant systems over the past few years have been using as many as three shredders all able to run at one time, demanding a larger baler for the plants.
Planning a better waste system in a new facility would involve getting a building with an elevation of 40 feet in height or more if you want a better indoor system. A baler’s volume relies on several feet (or more) of feed chute above the ram.
The dust that comes from shredders and paper handling fans is becoming more of a housekeeping issue than ever before. ASDI had been using state-of-the-art filters with bags or cartridges, as well as 3 different style drum filters. All of these
are under negative air and use a clean air fan with a VFD to match the CFM that is coming from the cyclone or separator system. This keeps the baler room very clean, and the dust captured is going to a briquetter. All filter equipment meets the NFPA guidelines.
Addressing noise on the roof and/or inside the plant has also driven our corrugator customers into new projects. Some noise is caused by the board hitting the fan wheels and/ or coming out of the cyclone discharge. ASDI has a full line of fan sound jackets, sound enclosures, and we make the new cyclones with an option to reduce the noise by using a proven sound board in particular areas of the cyclone that suppresses the noise. Also, we use in-line silencers on the fans, which also helps lower the noise coming from the cyclone.

Vacuum tables and their dust have added a large new investment for box manufacturers. Trying to find something that does not involve the NFPA is ideal. The systems out there that are not ideal are ones that are relying on the blowers for the vacuum tables to reach the dust vessel. The average fan on the vacuum table is good for 2 inches of static pressure. That is enough to blow 20 feet into an open space. The average wet system needs 5 inches of static, and every dry system with a clean air fan needs 6 inches of static. Therefore, whichever vessel chosen to do the cleaning needs to be under negative air, which is the cleanest system you can offer. ASDI offers a continuous cleaning media inside an enclosure with a secondary filter rated for a Merv 12 all under a negative air (a clean air fan on a VFD) and continuous cleaned with a 15 HP high pressure blower and conveys
that dust into the scrap duct. The clean air is released after the clean air fan into the plant. With the use of the clean air fan, it overcomes the media at its dirtiest pressure and halfway down the ductwork to the vacuum table fans. Therefore, they do not see an additional pressure they cannot handle.

DIGITAL MYTH BUSTERS:
Finn MacDonald dispels these myths of digital printing:
MYTH #1: DIGITAL IS MORE COMPLEX THAN FLEXOGRAPHIC
“I would argue that digital by definition is easier and more consistent than direct print flexo. With digital, it’s ripping a file, sending it to the press, and hitting a button that’s green and says ‘go.’ In the space of 2 feet, you’re seeing a blank and you’re seeing vivid life … vivid color.”
MYTH #2: THE CONSUMABLE COST OF DIGITAL PRINTING IS A MAJOR FACTOR
“Nobody outside of this building asks how much it costs to produce a digital blank with digital ink, rather than a traditional sheet with flexo-based ink. Instead, we’re addressing the questions of ‘how does digital help you?,’ ‘how can digital help you grow?,’ ‘what are the values of digital?’ That’s what we’re addressing.”
MYTH #3: DIGITAL REQUIRES SPECIALIZED SPACE AND A LARGE FOOTPRINT
“With a Domino press, you don’t need a clean room, you don’t need a lot of special air filtration, you don’t need a lot of special concrete build up floor placement, and what you really don’t need is a lot of space. You’ve got arguably the most compact press on the market (10' H x 75' L x 16' D) / (3m H x 23m L x 5m D), so it’s going to get a whole lot done in a very small footprint. So as far as single-pass aqueous based, there aren’t any other players who have a machine like this press.”
MYTH #4: FINDING A DIGITAL PRESS OPERATOR IS DIFFICULT
“The workforce of today likes a couple things. They love a screen. They love to push a couple buttons. But they really don’t want to put a lot of time into getting their hands dirty, moving stuff around, getting stuff to the nth degree aligned. They like to push a button, see progress, and take pride in what they produced. That’s what we have on our Domino press. We have two operators who have zero longtime experience in corrugated. What they do have, is hustle. They don’t like the frustration of managing work, but they like to show up and get a lot done. So, the talent needed to get massive impact might be more available to you than you imagine.”

Fosber America, Inc.
Paul Hrubesky
As we bid farewell to Paul Hrubesky, our admired colleague and friend, we reflect on his remarkable 46 years in the corrugated industry (36 of those years at Fosber). Known for his dedication, exceptional sales insight, and knack for building lasting relationships, Paul leaves a legacy that will be remembered for years. Paul began his career at Green Bay Packaging as a sample maker and quickly rose to Junior Designer. He credits two very experienced Senior Designers who taught him everything he knows. He was then promoted to PM of the Sheet Plant in Marinette, WI, to run a medium-sized plant and manage the team. He ran that plant until 1988. He had a short stint at Eddleman Industries in Albuquerque, NM, before landing his job at Fosber America, Inc., in December 1988.
Paul’s passion for the industry and commitment to excellence quickly set him apart becoming VP of Sales, holding that title until his retirement. His tenure saw the company achieve record-breaking sales and expand its market presence significantly.
One of Paul’s greatest strengths was his ability to forge strong relationships with clients (that he has to this day). His personable nature and deep understanding of the industry and customer needs has earned him the trust and respect of many in the industry. Paul has always been more than a salesperson; he’s been a partner in Fosber’s success!
Beyond his sales achievements, Paul has been a mentor to many young professionals in the industry. His leadership and encouragement have inspired a new generation of salespeople.
As Paul steps into retirement, he plans to spend more time with his family and pursue his passions. “I have the need for
speed and have enjoyed boats, motorcycles, and cars, and now fishing. But through the years my biggest joy is my two grandchildren, Ellie and Declan. I can’t spend enough time with them, my three boys, and their families. Married for 28 years to my wife Holly, we recently retired to Sturgeon Bay, WI, to enjoy more time fishing and boating.”
While his presence will be greatly missed, his contributions to the industry will continue to influence and inspire. The entire team at Fosber America extends their heartfelt gratitude to Paul for his friendship, years of service, and dedication. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of the company and the industry.
Geo. M. Martin Company
Over 95 Years of Innovative Solutions
Since 1929, Geo. M. Martin Company has been a pioneer in developing innovative solutions for diverse industries, including maritime, mining, and agriculture. In the 1940s, the company recognized the burgeoning need for creative solutions in the corrugated packaging sector, shifting its focus to meet these demands.
Today, the Company’s innovations continue to help converters optimize the efficiency of their converting lines and maximize the throughput of the industry’s fastest rotary die cutters and flexo folder-gluers.
LEADING INNOVATIONS
One of our latest innovations, SmartShingle™, has been awarded the AICC/BCN Innovation of the Year. This technology addresses a critical challenge for converters: minimizing press feed interrupts during load changes. By optimizing sheet overlap to create a void in the shingle stream, SmartShingle™ significantly reduces production loss, recovering up to 10,000 sheets per eighthour shift. Operators have the flexibility to engage or disengage this feature, ensuring versatility and control.
INNOVATING SPEED AND PROCESS RELIABILITY
The LBX SCRUBBER® Stacker has set a new standard in the industry, dramatically increasing production rates and process reliability from 32 MSF/ hour to as high as 400 MSF/hour for top performers. Engineered for efficiency, the LBX combines advanced sheet control with superior scrap removal, delivering perfectly square, virtually scrap-free stacks at maximum speed. With a variety of features and configurations, our
stackers are easily adaptable to meet the evolving needs of converters.
MAXIMIZING INNOVATION
Our Quik-Break™ III (QBIII) nicked bundle breaker enhances the output of rotary die cutters, flexo folder-gluers, and flatbed die cutters. QBIII’s dual airbag platens provide an even and positive gripping force to maintain the integrity of nicked bundles during separation. The gapless Dynamic Auto-compensating Platen prevents edge rolling and marking on small width bundles and when running parallel bundles with uneven heights. QBIII also features automatic platen offset, automatic bundle height sensing, and adjustable transit speed with smooth acceleration and deceleration.
Being offered in a 68" (1727mm) model and an extra-wide 92" (2337mm) model, which can accommodate two 46" (1168mm) wide bundle logs side by side, makes QBIII the perfect
high-performance machine for pizza boxes, wraps, and other wide-format die cuts.
CONTINUOUS INNOVATION

JB Machinery
Innovating for Success
For over 25 years, JB Machinery has remained the innovation leader in global direct print for the corrugated sheet fed market. From the first ColorDry® XL3000 IR dryers to its latest innovation AutoDryer Control™, JB has always taken a forward-looking approach to innovating solutions that maximize safety, productivity, efficiency, and profitability. JB’s global footprint continues to grow with Namibia marking the 67th country where its products are installed and operating.
OPTIMIZE DRYING, REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT
AutoDryer Control™ (ADC) —recipient of the 2023 FEFCO Silver Award for Best Innovation—is an upgrade on all new ColorDry XL3000 systems and as a popular retrofit for existing ColorDry XL3000 installations. ADC eliminates the overconsumption of energy due to overpowering IR drying systems. ADC users report minimum energy reductions of 20% with many reporting higher savings.
ADC eliminates the guesswork in selecting the proper power setting for optimum drying efficiency. Different inks and substrate combinations require different power settings to deliver the most efficient drying. Setting all dryers to 100% power will virtually guarantee dry ink. However, max power is seldom necessary to provide optimum drying. ADC uses a learned algorithm that analyses data for the substrate, ink, speed, and the facility’s environmental conditions. Using this information, ADC automatically sets and adjusts the power to maintain a globally set surface temperature target. The system requires minimal operator interaction during the initial job setup
and eliminates operator intervention once the job is running or during repeat orders. This allows operators to focus on other important tasks such as quality control or next order make-ready.
Popular as a retrofit and on new machines, InKomand® precise ink management control lowers setup times, reduces material waste, and eliminates the operator task of tending to the ink. InKomand® precisely controls ink temperature and continually monitors and makes finite adjustments to ink characteristics (viscosity and pH) to maintain ideal printing parameters. Automatic ink management reduces the use of ink and chemical adjusters. InKomand® also automatically adds the precise amount of adjuster required. Automating ink management allows operators to address other production functions. It also eliminates dramatic viscosity and pH swings that lead to color variation, inconsistent drying, jams, sheet wraps, and spoiled ink, which contribute to waste of product, material, and time.
AUTOMATE PLATE CLEANING, MINIMIZE DOWNTIME
JB’s AutoWash™ automatic plate washing system is available on a wide range of presses, including all Bobst and Göpfert flexo presses. The system performs preproduction, production, and postproduction plate washing of all plates, simultaneously in 1–4 minutes depending upon the wash cycle
selected. Manual washing can take 5–10 minutes per plate! AutoWash reduces plate washing time by 80%–90% but more importantly eliminates manual washing. The system also includes a 1.5-second print defect (hickey) removal cycle that runs without interrupting production.
AutoWash uses a “moist brush,” only using enough liquid to effectively clean the plates, without wasting water or creating waste sheets.
JB Machinery products are engineered to help you maximize efficiency, productivity, product quality, and profitability of your operations. JB Machinery products also provide simple operating platforms and automate traditional manual tasks making today’s labor turnover issues easier to manage.

Baumer hhs
CorrBox Solution from Baumer hhs –
A totally new approach to gluing and quality control of corrugated packaging Sustainable packaging regulations, zero-defect production, rising cost pressure, the shortage of skilled workers, and the instability of global supply chains— several challenges affecting the industry prompted the industry to rethink adhesive application and monitoring in corrugated packaging production. The result is the revolutionary CorrBox Solution system for flexo folder-gluers (FFG).
The CorrBox Solution is made up of the new PGD 1000 sensor with camera-like properties that set new standards in monitoring the gluing process. Previously, adhesives were mixed with additives that fluoresce under UV light to appear blue, yellow, or green. The purpose of the additives was
to create contrast between the surface of the packaging and the glue beads so that cameras and sensors could detect the adhesive. In view of the wide variety of packaging surfaces—white, brown, printed—this task was always quite a challenge. The additives can make the adhesives up to 50% more expensive. The PGD 1000 sensor reliably detects adhesive on corrugated board without any fluorescing additives whatsoever, and it doesn’t matter if or how the surface of a substrate is printed.
Eliminating the need for fluorescing additives in the adhesives offers yet another advantage: Corrugated packaging producers can use a wider range of different adhesives. Having a flexible choice of adhesives is an advantage for the CorrBox Solution. In view of the dramatic impact that global supply chains
can have, customers benefit even more from this kind of flexibility.
Similarly, Baumer hhs has set another milestone in the market with its new multi-application head for the CorrBox Solution. It is based on the innovative technology behind the Baumer hhs PX 1000 cold glue applicator, which is significantly more forgiving of viscosity fluctuations thanks to a new coil design that achieves a 42% higher closing force than previous offerings.
With its high closing force, even adhesives that have thickened after long idle periods can be reliably dispensed. The nozzles on the multi-application head can be lowered into an optional water bath that effectively prevents the nozzle tip from skinning over, even over extended periods, and greatly reduces any contamination or residue buildup. The PX 1000 multi-application head displays excellent startup behavior as a result and doubles run time due to reduced cleaning. Another advantage is up to 60% reduction in glue consumption without any negative effect on bonding. Baumer hhs has made these savings possible by using an optimized stitching algorithm that works hand-in-hand with the speed of the PX 1000 application head. With this method, the continuous line of glue applied previously is divided into a series of short segments. It results in significant savings on adhesive, and even increased adhesive strength. Additionally, reduced glue consumption reduces the plastic footprint of the packaging making it more sustainable.
The CorrBox Solution offers better KPIs, OEE, and a more sustainable future for corrugated packaging operations.

Baysek Machines, Inc.
One Operator Nick-Free Multiple-Out Die Cutting.
A prolonged state of world change and diminished dependable workforce continues to keep decision makers on a quest for the ability to increase converting quality and production while reducing labor. Fortunately, proven technology of the “one operator” Baysek flat die–rotary anvil die cutting method strongly and consistently delivers on both fronts.
ONE OPERATOR C-170 DIE CUTTER
Baysek’s flagship die cutter model C-170 has a large 1400mm x 1700mm die format that handles micro-Flute through double wall corrugated with solid/thin board and single/open face capability and more. Setups and changeovers can be accomplished in as little as 10–15 minutes. Food and pharmaceutical grade Nick-Free multiple-out finished products (up to 60,000 pieces per hour) are produced with little to no human handling. There are no stripping jigs or ancillary stripping devices with the Baysek method as all waste is automatically removed via the pneumatic waste hood. Whether hand stacking the standard load trolley or utilizing the optional conveyor in-feed system and extended out-feed conveyor, Baysek C-170 operation is reduced to a single person and the touch of a computerized screen.
ONE
OPERATOR
C-190 DIE CUTTER
Maintaining the same small floor footprint but expanding the sheet size to a larger 1400mm x 1900mm format, the NEW Baysek model C-190 die cutter has been field tested for over 3 years with multiple placements and new machine orders. Speed is not compromised on this larger format as the C-190 operates at the same maximum speed of the C-170 at 1800 sheets/hour. Beautifully straight

One of ERS’s flagship offerings is its Scrap and Trim Collection and Dust Control systems, which have been particularly well-received in the corrugated manufacturing industry. These systems stand apart from conventional alternatives due to their advanced technology, which includes the CCM® OCT Filter. ERS’s innovations optimize system performance by balancing air flows and reducing energy consumption. The Balancing Fan, which eliminates the need for airlocks, stabilizes energy distribution, ensuring that the system only uses the necessary horsepower to operate. Meanwhile, the CCM® OCT Filter cleans dust-laden air efficiently through oscillating and rotating suction nozzles that ensure continuous operation
with minimal pressure loss. This design leads to increased efficiency and lower operational and maintenance costs for customers.
For the paper converting industry, ERS offers state-of-the-art trim removal systems that help businesses maximize production and increase recycling revenue. ERS customizes each system to the specific requirements of the client, ensuring that both efficiency and profitability are maximized.
ERS’s commitment to customer satisfaction extends beyond system design and installation. G.F. Puhl Co.
G.F. Puhl Offers Space-Saving Innovations
The engineering experts at G.F. Puhl customize trim and dust collection systems to meet your needs. One of the most common requirements for any system installation is to fit the system into the smallest possible space that minimizes our customer’s construction cost and allows more space for production equipment. One of our most popular indoor space-saving solutions is to design and install an outdoor concentrator, a device that literally concentrates the material into less air before conveying the material to the baler. Concentrating the airflow outdoors allows us to reduce the space and size of the indoor equipment. Concentrators offer several advantages:
1. Concentrators can be paired directly with a dust filter system, which can be either indoors or outdoors depending on available space inside the building and the customer’s preference.
2. Concentrators can run in all outdoor weather conditions.
3. Concentrators allow the use of a smaller indoor separator over the baler, which reduces the ceiling height required in the baler area.
4. Concentrators provide a way to expand an existing system without having to purchase an additional baler.
5. Concentrators are very low maintenance with very few moving parts.
Another G.F. Puhl space-saving innovation involves placing our material-handling blowers on engineered post mounts. G.F. Puhl engineers have created designs that you may not have seen elsewhere. Our post mounts typically have a footprint of less than 3 ft. x 3 ft. and do not load the roof structure with weight. Our post mounting system
allows your maintenance crew to drive up to the blower with a scissors lift and safely perform preventive maintenance tasks.
The indoor space of a manufacturing operation costs box and packaging manufacturing plants money both upfront and on an ongoing basis in construction, heating, cooling, housekeeping, and insurance premiums. G.F. Puhl’s engineering expertise minimizes the space needed for trim-collection systems and maximizes the space you can use for manufacturing by employing
engineered space-saving technology and equipment that can operate both indoors and outdoors.
Give us a call to discuss how we can reduce your costs with a G.F. Puhl engineered air conveyed dust and trim collection system.

Today’s corrugators and converting equipment are running at higher speeds to produce more MSF per hour, with quicker roll change, faster setups, and higher value-added work. Being a connected enterprise enables a plant to leverage today’s fast-paced technology where success depends on automation and productivity.
At Innoveyance, we are doing our part by providing new and improved material handling equipment such as our mesh ball rotator and bundle conveyors to keep things moving in today’s corrugated plants. Our mesh ball rotator conveyor provides a rollerless surface that utilizes a modular ball-belt and integrated worm gear driven rotational disc.
Our mesh ball bundle conveyor allows our customers to achieve transfer rates in excess of 20 bundles per minute. This gives them the ability to achieve the ability to side-shift, right-angle transfer in one or two directions, rotate, and load build in a smaller footprint. It improves efficiency at the load former
by grouping bundles together side-byside, rotating orientation and reducing operator interface.
At Innoveyance, we offer our Computer Inventory Management Systems (CIMS) for full plant automation. CIMS communicates with the customer’s scheduling system and has decision-making software to move material based on the schedule. It also enables strapping systems to interface with scheduling systems and offers scrap tracking capabilities.

Kadant Johnson
Steam Systems Upgrades Improve the Operational Runnability of Corrugators
Kadant Johnson is a full-service provider of steam and condensate system solutions for the wet end of corrugated packaging plants. Our expertise is in heat transfer, steam and condensate behavior, and steam system controls. Our technologies enable corrugators to run faster without board defects, use more recovered fiber in board, and use less energy. We partner with corrugators to improve their operational runnability and are proud to have contributed to an industry that has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 50% per box from 2006 to 2020*.
AUDITS
Understanding the performance of a corrugated steam system and how to improve productivity starts with a steam system audit. This includes an evaluation of the boiler room and corrugator steam and condensate system equipment. This holistic evaluation includes transient condition analysis and paper temperature measurements after all heating components. Our experts partner with corrugators to prioritize improvement opportunities in production speed, board quality, and energy efficiency.
HARDWARE
We have a full portfolio of steam and condensate handling hardware that helps provide consistent heat transfer to form, adhere, and heat corrugated board. As corrugators use more recycled fiber, the average length and freeness of the fiber is declining and it is becoming more difficult to form flutes, particularly at high speeds. Our ThermoMax® steam moisturizer system helps precondition the medium and improve flute formation on single facers. The medium is also able to
accept starch more deeply and uniformly for better bonding at faster speeds.
As the liner and single-face pass over steam heated rolls, they need even and efficient heating. Our steam joints, including the LJX™ and CorrPro® rotary joint, securely support our rigid syphons to maintain precise syphon clearance and reliably evacuate condensate for even heat transfer. Traditional bent pipe syphons are flimsy, move erratically, and provide inconsistent condensate removal.
Once steam releases its heat energy into the process, it condenses into condensate. The ThermoZone™ condensate handling station moves the condensate to the boiler room for recycling and does not require differential pressure. This allows hot plates to run certain grades at the low pressures and temperatures needed for flatter board.
SYSTEMS AND CONTROLS
Hardware upgrades increase the capability of a machine section, but they are most effective when they’re part of an integrated steam system.
Our ThermoMax® control technology combines PLC-based automation to manage rapid roll and hot plate temperature responses for real-time grade changes. Its supervisory control of blow-through steam increases energy efficiency. Our newest enhancement, the ThermoMax® alert system, provides remote performance monitoring by customers or Kadant experts. Steam system issues can be identified
before they impact machine performance. Combining our hardware with our expertise in controls creates a steam and condensate system optimized for each corrugator’s process.
SERVICES
The final piece to delivering turnkey solutions is installation and maintenance. Our team can install or supervise installations to make sure systems are installed correctly, the first time. Once installed, we can provide routine maintenance and safety inspections such as nondestructive testing and boiler room safety audits. This single point of accountability lets maintenance supervisors focus their limited resources elsewhere.

Valmet Automation Inc.
Game Changer: How Valmet QCS Is Transforming Quality Control
Valmet IQ is a quality management solution designed and built with the experience of thousands of system deliveries by Valmet over more than half a century. Originally designed for pulp, paper, board, and tissue production, it is a customizable quality control, information, and management solution that has been further developed to meet the needs of corrugated board production.
WARP REDUCTION INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY
Automated Valmet IQ Warp control addresses cross-direction moisture and temperature variations that cause sheet warping, which is impossible to correct with standard corrugator controls. Valmet IQ automatic closed-loop control (MPC) uses Valmet IQ Warp measurement with Valmet IQ Moisturizers to achieve warp targets quickly and without further actions. IQ Moisturizer can handle all kinds of warping (S-warp, CD-warp, edge-warp) correction and moisture CD profiling in corrugators.
ENSURED BONDING AND STABILIZED QUALITY WITH VALMET IQ WET-END CONTROL
Valmet’s experience with different fiberbased webs has shown that temperature measurements alone are not sufficient to control the corrugator process. The Valmet IQ Multipoint measurement system provides precise moisture and temperature information to Single facer & Triplex pre-heater wrap-arms for automatic process control, ensuring optimal conditions for gluing, preventing warping, and decreasing the washboard effect.
VALMET IQ DRY-END CONTROL
Moisture imbalance in the final sheet causes post-warping and cracking,
affecting converting department output and final product quality, leading to customer reclamations. Valmet IQ Singlesided IR moisture measurement provides accurate moisture and temperature measurement for closed-loop control. With IQ Warp control and IQ Moisturizers, the sheet’s final moisture can be optimized, improving end-product quality and stabilizing the process even further.
VALMET IQ FULL QCS HELPS TO REDUCE WEIGHT AND MAXIMIZE SPEED
Multiple variables throughout the corrugator process are manually controlled by operators, causing the process to not run optimally 24/7. However, the evolving market presents challenges, including adhesion issues, environmental conditions, and complexities in coating chemistry and drying processes. To tackle these challenges, XDS provides a comprehensive toolkit that enhances coating performance, reduces application costs, and prioritizes industry-leading safety and ease of use.
INKPRO™
inkPRO™ is popular as both a retrofit for existing web-fed equipment and an option for new machines. It precisely manages coatings and inks, significantly lowering setup times, dramatically reducing material waste, and freeing operators from constant monitoring of ink and coating conditions during production. inkPRO™ continuously monitors and automatically adjusts coating and ink properties—such as temperature, viscosity, and pH—to optimize performance.
By automating coating management, inkPRO™ minimizes the use of coatings and chemical adjusters, allowing operators to focus on other production tasks. This system also eliminates drastic swings in viscosity and pH, which can lead to performance variations and inconsistent drying, ultimately reducing waste of product, materials, and time.
IRAIR+ ®
XDS’ irAIR+® offers the packaging industry a high-performance, energyefficient, and safe drying solution for webfed applications. Designed to tackle the unique challenges of drying and curing functional coatings, irAIR+® delivers the production and operational performance our customers need. Designed to be the safest infrared drying solution on the market, irAIR+® provides peace of mind that XDS IR technology delivers both safety and performance.
SAVE TIME, WATER, AND ENERGY!
The AutoWash™ automatic plate washing system performs pre-, during-, and postrun washing of all plates simultaneously in less than four minutes, compared with the 5–10 minutes manual washing can take per plate! AutoWash reduces plate washing time by 80% to 90%, but more importantly, it eliminates manual washing altogether. The system also features a 1.5-second print defect (hickey) removal cycle that runs without interrupting production, generating only 7–9 waste sheets.
Concerned about wastewater from cleaning plates? AutoWash™ employs a “moist brush” approach, using just enough liquid to effectively clean the plates instead of sending gallons of water down the drain.
XDS products are engineered to maximize efficiency, productivity, product quality, and profitability while also supporting your goals of being a green member of your community.

Pamarco
Investments in growth, expanding jumbo anilox capacity I would like to thank our converter and OEM customers for another excellent year of anilox sales to the corrugated industry.
Since the early 2020s, we have seen a significant increase in the demand for new and re-engraved jumbo anilox rolls. To ensure Pamarco remains at the forefront of this market, we recently invested in a state-of-the-art 5.5M laser engraving system. This investment doubles our capacity at our Atlanta Center of Excellence for OEM and corrugated anilox. Today, our Atlanta facility serves the market with two jumbo lasers capable of handling roll sizes up to 220 inches. These new lasers, along with the exceptional expertise of our Atlanta team, enable us to
meet the jumbo requirements of the corrugated industry.
In addition to the lasers, we’ve increased the capacity of our upstream equipment and added skilled power to our Roll Preparation Department. Here, we can replace journals, repair bearing surfaces, and restore the outside diameter to OEM specifications. Our use of AST (sub-arc welding) buildup creates a permanent repair for rolls over 20 years old or damaged on the press.
From a size perspective, we can now machine, coat, grind, polish, and engrave rolls up to 220 inches in face length and 20 inches in outside diameter. Due to the rolls’ heavy-walled construction, we’ve increased the weight capacity to 3 tons in all facility areas.
Our manufacturing facility in Walton, KY, produces cylinders for
most applications using state-of-the-art four-axis CNC machines with live tooling. Having a spare cylinder on hand can enhance equipment productivity and efficiency for customers with jumbo machines.
At Pamarco, we are unwavering in our commitment to improving our service levels. We are dedicated to growing together and remaining your trusted partners in enhancing performance and increasing throughput. Please let us know how we can assist with your next project!

Maximizing Roller Performance: Why Precision Matters in Corrugator and Converting Equipment
Box plants depend on the performance of critical rollers in key equipment such as corrugator single facers, glue machines, corrugator knives, as well as feed sections and print stations on flexo folder-gluers and flexo die cutters. When it’s time to replace these essential components, it’s not just about installing a new glue applicator surface or re-coating meter, doctor, and knife rollers. Nor is it just about adding a fresh laser-engraved ceramic surface on anilox rollers or a new elastomeric surface on feed and wiper rollers. There are numerous critical specifications that must be addressed during roller reconditioning, or the rollers won’t meet the required OEM standards.
Key specifications include dynamic balance, taper, total indicated runout (TIR), bearing surface integrity, gear step accuracy, pilot bore and keyway alignment, as well as bolt hole tolerances. Overlooking any of these details can significantly impact roller performance, leading to costly downtimes and operational inefficiencies.
At ARC International, our engineers begin the reconditioning process by cross-referencing the original OEM blueprint with the customer’s order to ensure a comprehensive inspection of the incoming roller. If we find any deviations in critical tolerances—especially in journals or bolt-on headers—these issues are documented, photographed, and included in a confirmation sent to
the customer for approval. If a roller’s journals are too worn or damaged for repair, we may recommend a complete journal or header replacement, or even the fabrication of an entirely new roller base. ARC International is proud to supply newly fabricated rollers to both the corrugated aftermarket and directly to OEMs, adhering to their strict tolerance requirements.
For rollers approved for reconditioning, ARC’s machinists utilize true welding processes, as opposed to the more common spray weld methods used by many competitors. This ensures critical areas like bearing bores and gear step diameters maintain their structural integrity during operation— avoiding concentricity issues that can lead to rejected boxes and operational headaches. Many roller manufacturers lack in-house capabilities for advanced
journal and header repairs, outsourcing these tasks to local machine shops, resulting in longer lead times and potential delays. At ARC International, we handle these critical repairs in-house, leveraging advanced equipment and skilled technicians at both our Charlotte, NC, and Las Vegas, NV, facilities to deliver the highest quality results with faster turnaround times.
To experience ARC’s streamlined process and commitment to quality, contact your ARC customer service representative today at 800-526-4569 and ask about our Shipping Made Easy™ program.

Just over four years ago, Dedicated Paperboard was formed by Kerry Remley and Christopher Jordan. As a team, we have worked together for over 20 years selling and servicing customers in the Containerboard market. Kerry Remley started in 1990 as part of Kemiart (U.S.) helping to build Kemiart Coated Linerboard into a brand name in the industry. Christopher Jordan joined the Kemiart U.S. team in 2004 just as they were about to introduce Powerflute Medium to the market.
Fast-forward to 2020, after handing off close to 200,000 tons of sales annually for Metsä Board to take control of, we became the U.S. agent for Mondi Containerboard sales. It was a perfect opportunity to continue our partnership to sell products that were unique to the U.S. Market. The Mondi Group is a global leader in the packaging and paper industry that focuses on sustainable solutions for Containerboard customers. Mondi’s products have specifications that provide a distinct advantage over domestic offerings. We are lucky to be able to provide something to customers that they cannot get anywhere else in the U.S. I always say, this industry is weird, you have smaller companies buying containerboard from bigger companies, then going out into the market and competing against those bigger companies for business. We offer something to allow those smaller companies to go out and actually compete against the big fish in the market.
In 2023, Mondi started their €125M Upgrade of the Powerflute Mill in Kuopio, Finland. The end result was that the strongest Medium being sold in the United States became 15% stronger. Customers are able to do things with Powerflute that are unmatched by domestic mediums being used in North America.
Mondi also made changes to their Baywhite Uncoated White top in 2023; the result of those changes were an uptick of 8% in Strength numbers. When you factor in the SCT, brightness, and Mullen values of Provantage Baywhite, there are few if any Uncoated White tops that can compete. The high brightness values of Baywhite make it ideal for digital printing. One of the biggest concerns from customers when dealing with overseas mills is the supply availability. They are worried that it will take two months to get paper. Dedicated Paperboard has a combined 50 years of experience in managing the supply chain of product coming over from Europe. We work closely with the customers to make sure we have what they need and when they need it in one of our three Warehouses on the East Coast.
Please contact us if you have any questions about any of the Mondi Products. We would love the opportunity to show how we could give you a distinct advantage in the market by using Mondi Containerboard.

Crespel & Deiters Group
Efficiency meets innovation: High-performance adhesive solutions and service
C&D Corrugating & Paper is a brand of the Crespel & Deiters Group, headquartered in Ibbenbüren, Germany, since 1858. Over six generations, the family business has grown into an international producer of functional wheat ingredients that add value for industrial customers and their end products. Today, with around 440 employees processing 295,000 tons of wheat flour each year, the Crespel & Deiters Group is one of the market leaders in Europe. Boasting more than 30 years of expertise in holistic solutions and service support for the corrugated board industry, the brand develops sustainable, high-performance adhesives that help reduce waste and energy consumption and increase productivity.
ACHIEVE MORE WITH LESS
Process engineered wheat starches bring a multitude of benefits to industrial adhesives. The product chemistry optimizes water holding capacity which facilitates complete gelatinization, further enhancing the bond performance of the adhesive. Compared with other raw materials such as corn starch, the bonding process requires less energy, resulting in reduced paper temperatures and reduced glue application along with significantly higher line speeds. Additionally, thanks to a short texture the glue can be placed easily and precisely on the medium. These attributes combine to produce corrugated board that is more stable with less moisture movement over time and consequently less warp with downstream benefits. Reduced heat and moisture lower stress on papers, resulting in an enhanced surface for printing which further improves the quality and
performance of corrugated packaging delivered to the end user.
CREATING ADDED VALUE FOR INDUSTRIAL CUSTOMERS
Continuous R&D and unrivaled expertise separating and refining wheat make C&D Corrugating & Paper not just a starch supplier but also a problem-solver thanks to its customized innovative solutions. Take the Definol range, for example. This all-in-one adhesive solution already includes additives and is therefore ready to use once mixed with water. Caustic Soda and Borax are not required. While the adhesive represents less than two percent of the cost of manufacturing corrugated board, it has a significant impact on the production process and end-product quality. Investment in this technology adds value with an improved bottom line for the corrugated plant.
HOLISTIC SERVICE
The corrugated board industry is as diverse and individual as its end products. That’s why it is not enough to simply replace adhesive to make processes more sustainable. In order to achieve the best possible result, from adhesive choices
to the setting of systems and training of employees, the entire process must be viewed holistically. Therefore, C&D Corrugating & Paper shares its expertise with clients and provides comprehensive service and consultation. The company offers technical support during the introduction phase, training programs, service visits, and follow-ups once operational—and all at short notice through local representatives!
STEP INTO THE FUTURE
The Crespel & Deiters Group is continuously investing in modernization, R&D and international growth. The company’s vision is to be one of the leading global manufacturers of wheat-based solutions that empower customers to deliver top-quality products in a sustainable manner. To achieve more with less is a necessity for the creation of a fully circular economy for current and future generations.

Our Chicago plant and brokerage division, with coast-to-coast reach, connect clients to a vast network of consuming mills and processing partners, ensuring maximum value from recovered paper. Our deep relationships across paper-related industries make it possible to deliver real value to suppliers and customers alike.
MORE THAN RECYCLING:
A PARTNER IN SUSTAINABILITY
What sets MAPR apart is our mission to help suppliers and customers: “Grow the Worth of Their Waste.” We recognize
that every company’s sustainability journey is unique, and we don’t just bid on recyclables—we partner with you to assess your current processes and materials, uncovering new opportunities for improvement. Whether it’s increasing the value of recyclable assets or implementing innovative solutions for greater sustainability, our collaborative approach goes beyond traditional recycling.
PROVEN RESULTS, MEASURABLE IMPACT
Our team has helped numerous clients turn waste into valuable resources. For example, we worked with a company to transform its paper waste disposal system into a revenue stream, generating over $120,000 annually by sorting and diverting recyclable materials. Another client—a large printing plant—doubled its recovered-fiber revenue in just six months by eliminating freight and thirdparty costs and sending materials mill direct. By adjusting pricing structures, our clients benefit directly from market increases in recovered paper value.
ADAPTING TO A CHANGING MARKET
At MAPR, we forecast trends and seize opportunities in dynamic paper and plastic
markets. In 2023, we saw the value of OCC, Mixed Paper, and DLK grades more than double, while deinking grades and pulp substitutes decreased. As North American demand grows alongside expanded recycling capacity, we help our clients capitalize on market changes to maximize returns. We know the challenges that come with increased sustainability goals, waste reduction, and global economic shifts. However, these challenges also present significant opportunities for AICC members and others in the industry. MAPR’s adaptability ensures that we navigate changing market dynamics effectively, and we always find new uses for various scrap streams, meeting the evolving demands for different paper grades.
ONSHORING AND DOMESTIC OPPORTUNITIES
The movement to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. offers great prospects for North American paper mills and fiber supply. As manufacturers increase production domestically, there is a growing need for paperboard and box manufacturing plants to support the supply chain. MAPR is positioned to help manufacturers and suppliers thrive in this environment by optimizing waste recovery and recycling processes.

CoparSolutions
Chicago-based CoparSolutions brings the latest technology and the precision of Machine Learning to the corrugating process. Total Corrugator Control (TCC) integrates multiple quality and production enhancing products into a cohesive system that automates the production process, reduces human interaction, overrides costly operator mistakes, and maximizes machine performance.
CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEM
When crews identify quality issues they typically make “best guess” adjustments based on their experience, which in today’s environment may lack in tenure. Every change has an inherent dwell time, where crews must wait for the paper to travel through the machine before seeing the result. The time required to resolve issues in this manner may lead to a substantial amount of waste and reduced profitability.
Other aspects can also affect final product quality, including individual roll quality and moisture variation. Speed changes require multiple adjustments to maintain paper temperatures and effective starch application. Ideally, all variables should be changed in unison to maintain consistent board quality throughout the order.
TCC improves production by replacing operator “best guess,” open-loop adjustments with closed-loop procedures, which continually monitor and correct critical corrugator processes. When the machine speed or paper characteristics change, finite adjustments are implemented immediately throughout the process to maintain consistent board quality.
ENHANCED SECURITY
TCC enhances security by eliminating shared passwords and unauthorized access to critical system parameters. The latest 3D face recognition technology ensures only authorized employees have access to modify configurations, perform machine
calibrations, or adjust temperature or starch settings. All modifications are timestamped with employee information to provide transparency and accountability.
STREAMLINED TROUBLESHOOTING
TCC keeps maintenance crews informed of component status and detects failing parts if they break. When a faulty part is detected, a blinking notification icon is displayed on-screen right next to the failing component. Touching the icon takes the user to a troubleshooting screen, which allows them to view information about the sensor, including wire terminal numbers, expected voltage levels, repair/replacement videos, and even part numbers.
STAYING CONNECTED, SAVING TIME
Instant text or email notifications may be sent to designated employees when critical events occur. This feature eliminates the time lag between the occurrence and when management is made aware of the situation. Authorized employees may request a parts quote right from the main console’s troubleshooting screen. This feature expedites the ordering process and ensures the correct parts are ordered. After a request is made, CoparSolutions’ trained staff prepare a quote, which is returned for approval before the item is shipped. For general, noncritical questions or problems,
employees can message Copar’s Service Department directly from the interface.
ON DEMAND TRAINING
TCC includes access to step-by-step troubleshooting procedures. These integrated videos provide guided instructions, which help keep the corrugator performing at maximum speed and productivity. The videos are integrated locally into each operator touchscreen and do not require internet connection.

FROM PAST TO PROMISE
Boxmakers assess the state of the industry and their expectations for 2025
BY ROBERT BITTNER
The new year returns a former president to the U.S. White House, instilling a renewed sense of optimism among boxmakers as they consider 2025. Yet questions remain: Will campaign promises for lower taxes become reality? What—if anything—will replace the benefits of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), scheduled to sunset at the end of the year? And policymakers aside, how will some of the industry challenges of the recent past, including labor and supply chain issues, shake out in the months to come?
“With Trump in there, I like to think that even though we may not get exactly the same tax package we have today, I imagine it will stay largely intact, which I find bullish.”
—Justin Hill Jr., president, Lawrence Paper Co.
Where We Are
Taking stock of the industry at the close of 2024, Bay Cities Chairman and CEO Greg Tucker notes, “The current state of the corrugated business is just OK. Collectively, we have been in a downturn for about 18 months. Some folks are doing great [and] others, not so much. Americans went from buying stuff to buying services. Due to the supply chain snarl, we overbought and stuffed warehouses full of goods that suddenly we had no customers for.
“I feel the industry has bottomed out,” he adds. “The customer base is beginning to demonstrate a new normal of buying patterns. There is a bunch of stimulus dollars out there ready to be put to work building business—and that will require more boxes. Retail is back, luring the
consumer in with experiences that can’t be found online. More products will be shopped off shelves.”
Tucker also believes online shopping will continue to grow. But he is seeing a shift in how corrugated is being used in e-commerce fulfillment. “The likes of Amazon and others are moving from oversized boxes to mailers and ships-inown-container solutions,” he says. This approach will reduce the need for more boxes.
Lawrence Paper Co. President Justin Hill Jr. has lingering concerns regarding the potential for overcapacity in the industry. “Throughout the COVID-19 years, we invested heavily in new, very productive equipment. Now with volume dropping off, frankly we can’t keep all of those machines busy for 40
hours a week. That’s a concern,” he says, “because I see just about everybody in the industry investing in new equipment. If we keep going at this rate, I see us ending up with way too much converting capacity. If that happens, there’s going to be a shakeout.”
Hill doesn’t attribute the drop-off in business to significant shifts in the marketplace. Rather, it seems like a natural contraction after the boom years of 2021 and 2022. “But that was an artificial high,” he says, “especially with all of the e-commerce going on. Even though we don’t do any e-commerce here, it still affects us because of what our competitors are doing. I think we’ve just come down to a more realistic level of business than we had during COVID.”
For AICC Chairman Gary Brewer, president and CEO of Package Crafters Inc. and Creative Packaging Inc., with operations in North Carolina and Georgia, 2024 brought unexpected challenges. “Given our locations, we were watching Hurricane Helene closely in September,” he says. “Of course, we have contingency plans for events like this. But predicting the exact path of a storm is a tough proposition.”
Brewer’s Georgia operation was impacted when Helene came through. “We only lost about a day’s worth of production and were able to come right back,” he says.
Some employees were personally affected as well, with people unable to get to work due to storm damage, fallen trees, and so on.
Brewer’s North Carolina facility was not impacted at all, with the hurricane
causing the most damage about two hours west. That meant the facility was in a good position to help in the subsequent aid efforts. “We had requests for our corrugated boxes to support the people in the western part of our state, to help transport immediate supplies and necessary goods. We gladly participated in those efforts,” Brewer says.
“We were fortunate in our area. When I drove through some of the hard-hit areas on my way to Georgia a couple of weeks [later], seeing the aftermath of the storm was quite eye-opening.”
Two years ago, labor was a constant challenge for boxmakers. By the end of 2024, that situation, at least for some, had improved. “Over the last two years or so, we went from the point when we couldn’t find anybody to fill open positions to seeing labor loosen up,” Brewer says. “I think it will remain loose, unless the economy ramps up too rapidly as a result of policy changes. Then, we could possibly end up being a little short again. But I don’t have any concerns in the near term about labor. We’re finding more people who are looking for jobs and are willing to work. I see nothing but relief in the short term.”
“Labor remains a concern for many,” Hill acknowledges, “but we’re one of the fortunate ones. Labor is really not an issue for us. We offer incentive pay in our plants. As a result of doing that, we have some of the best-paid employees in the three cities where we operate, turnover is pretty low, and productivity is quite high.”
Taxes, Tariffs, and Trade
It is impossible to discuss the state of the industry today without also reflecting on how today’s business may change in the year ahead.
“With the election going to [Donald] Trump, I’m more optimistic about 2025 than I was,” Hill admits. “I was very concerned about what was going to happen to taxes and whether Washington was going to put its hands in our pockets
“We’re finding more people who are looking for jobs and are willing to work. I see nothing but relief in the short term.”

with capital gains taxes and all kinds of other bad things.”
And although he believes the economy may be overdue for a recession, he is trusting that the Trump administration can keep such a downturn at bay.
Many business owners are concerned that the TCJA, enacted in 2017, will be “sunsetting” at the end of 2025, bringing an end to a wide range of tax assistance. However, given the Trump team’s campaign platform—as well as the legacy of Trump’s first administration—there is a strong expectation that the expiring TCJA will be replaced with a very similar new tax package, allowing many, if not all, of the benefits to continue.
“With Trump in there, I like to think that even though we may not get exactly the same tax package we have today, I imagine it will stay largely intact, which I find bullish,” says Hill.
“They may not look exactly like the current program, but the intent and the benefits will carry over,” Brewer states. “Raising taxes would be polar opposite to the message we’re being given at this time.”
While U.S. taxes may not rise markedly, the new administration has already proposed a number of trade tariffs—essentially foreign taxes on imported goods.
The fallout from these tariffs will impact U.S. boxmakers to varying degrees. For instance, manufacturers dependent on an international supply chain will see prices rise and availability shrink. As a result, “there is a great possibility that we will see some manufacturing moving back to North America,” Tucker suggests.
The flip side, however, is that countries affected by the new tariffs are likely to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. imports, making it more challenging for companies doing significant business overseas.
Consolidation and Opportunities
Consolidation within the industry is expected to continue in the year ahead. But there are some positives associated with it.
“Consolidation and leveling of our furnish responsibly by our integrated brothers will keep prices high, which always helps,” Tucker believes. “The larger

integrateds won’t be seen reaching into the smalls’ back pockets to steal customers as they have a good flow of demand.
“Where there will be issues may be where smaller companies see the sole proprietor retiring and either having to sell or close because there is no value-add for an acquirer due to the lack of professionalism in the business,” he adds. “Many people are retiring, and there will be issues with the owner trying to get what they may feel is a fair dollar for the business when they failed to invest back into it.”
“I think consolidation is actually good for the industry,” Brewer states. “With consolidation, large companies get larger. And when that happens, they lose their agility. Often, they lose customer focus. That opens the door for new customer opportunities for us as smaller independents.”
Brewer believes consolidation translates to a growing need for startups in the
marketplace. “The customers and potential customers we talk to like the personal touch that we as independents can give,” he says. “They like our creativity, our flexibility. They like all of the things that we’re founded upon.”
To make the most of the opportunities, though, Brewer would like to see the industry play a more active role in supporting independent corrugated startups.
“I definitely believe there’s room in the marketplace for new companies,” he says. “I just think there are still things we as an industry can do to remove some of the barriers and help to get those startups off and running.
“The barriers to entry are pretty high,” he continues. “The cost of capital remains high. And there isn’t a lot of used equipment available, which is what most people typically start out with. I want to see us put in place the tools for startups to succeed: educational offerings on writing a business plan, sourcing
equipment, securing financing—all of those things people need to start up a corrugated business.”
Looking Forward
Despite the unknowns and lingering uncertainties, the boxmakers we spoke to are looking forward to the new year with optimism.
“Right now, I feel really good about our industry, the economy moving forward, and the American people,” Brewer says. “Frankly, I’m very excited for all of us.”
Then again, he adds, “I’m an eternal optimist.”
Hill is on a similar page. “I’m relatively upbeat,” he says.
“Mostly, we will see a lift in the box business as we move into 2025,” adds Tucker, whose optimism seems a bit more tempered. “Bill Laimbeer Sr. always told me that odd years are the best for the box business. Well, I can assure everyone that 2025 will be a very odd year, thus, a good one for the box biz!”

FOR THE PAST 41 YEARS...
ASDI has been providing quality Pneumatic Conveying and Mechanical Belt Conveying Systems for the Corrugated Paper Industry. There are several different types of systems being “turnkeyed” in this industry. The most popular over the past few years are the cyclone system, the indoor separator system, and the mechanical conveyor in a trench system.
For the Sheet Plants the sequential system using one fan for as many as 4 machines has offered them savings on the electrical power and starting investment by using less CFM. Regardless of the type of system that is used, ASDI provides a design that is safe and maximizes the production for each machine.
Corrugators Plants themselves are now using shredders in different areas of the corrugator. ASDI has installed shredders at the “rotary shear” section and the waste eject at the “cut-off knife” area. ASDI has used a wide conveyor to take reject sheets from one area to another allowing the use of one shredder instead of two. More shredders are being used at the wet end as well. The new plant systems over the past few years have been using as many as three shredders, all able to run at one time, demanding a larger baler for the plants.
Planning a better waste system in a new facility would involve getting a building with an elevation of 40 feet in height or more if you want a better indoor system. A balers volume relies on several feet (or more) of feed chute above the ram.
The dust that comes from shredders and paper handling fans is becoming more of a housekeeping issue than ever before.
ASDI has been using state-of-the-art filters with bags or cartridges, as well as 3 different style drum filters. All of these are under negative air and use a clean air fan with a VFD to match the CFM that is coming from the cyclone or separator system. This keeps the baler room very clean, and the dust captured is going to a briquetter. All filter equipment meets the NFPA guidelines.
Addressing noise on the roof and/or inside the plant has also driven our corrugator customers into new projects. Some of the noise is caused by the board hitting the fan wheels and/or coming out of the cyclone discharge. ASDI has a full line of fan sound jackets, sound enclosures and we make the new cyclones with an option to reduce the noise by using a proven sound board in particular areas of the cyclone that suppresses the noise. Also, we use in-line silencers on the fans when we do this which also helps lower the noise coming from the cyclone.
Vacuum tables and their dust have added a large new investment for box manufacturers. Trying to find something that does not involve the NFPA is ideal. The systems out there that are not ideal is a system that is relying on the blowers for the Vacuum tables to reach the dust vessel itself. The average fan that is on the vacuum table is good for 2 inches of static pressure. That is enough to blow 20 feet into an open space. The average wet system needs 5 inches of static and every dry system with a clean air fan needs 6 inches of static. Therefore, whichever vessel that is chosen to do the cleaning needs to be under negative air, which is the cleanest system you can offer. ASDI offers a continuous cleaning media inside an enclosure with a secondary filter rated for a Merv 12 all under a negative air (a clean air fan on a VFD) and continuous cleaned with a 15 HP high pressure blower and conveys that dust into the scrap duct. The clean air is released after the clean air fan into the plant. With the use of the clean air fan, it overcomes the media at its dirtiest pressure and halfway down the ductwork to the vacuum table fans. Therefore, the vacuum fans do not see any additional pressure that they cannot handle.

AICC’s biennial report shows compensation growth for member employees
AICC is pleased to announce that its 2024 Salary, Hourly Wage & Benefits Report is now available. This report provides the most thorough analysis of employee salaries, wages, and benefits offered in independent corrugator and sheet plants within the United States. Employers can leverage this valuable tool to benchmark their compensation and benefits offerings against industry averages and make informed decisions about employee compensation.
The survey, conducted in the first half of 2024, collected data from 28
independent corrugator/sheet feeder plants and 60 sheet plants across the U.S., representing a workforce of 8,443. In all, 29 management positions and 86 nonmanagement positions were surveyed. The finished report segments data by plant type (corrugator/sheet feeder plant versus sheet plant) and organizational role (management versus nonmanagement). From there, a detailed salary and wage data breakdown for each job position is provided, along with additional insight into position tenure, plant employment size, and AICC region.
The 2024 report shows that among all participating companies, the average management employee has been in their role for 11.0 years and has seen an average increase in pay of 5.1% between January 1, 2023, and January 1, 2024. We can also see that the average nonmanagement employee has been in their position for 7.3 years and has seen an average pay increase of 4.3% during that same period. By comparison, AICC’s 2022 report found increases of 7.1% and 7.0% between January 1, 2021, and January 1, 2022, for the average management and nonmanagement employees, respectively.
2024
Interestingly, further examination shows that in 2024, company size and years of experience did not always correlate with higher average salaries for management positions at responding corrugator plants. However, this was not the case for responding sheet plants, where the number of employees significantly impacted management salaries. This holds true for nonmanagement positions at corrugator and sheet plants, where higher average salaries were reported at larger responding companies.
As a reminder, all individual data from participating companies have
been kept strictly confidential, and no AICC member or staff member has had access to any of the individual data. All responses to this survey were collected and compiled by Association Research Inc., which was acquired by Industry Insights Inc. in September. Following the acquisition, Industry Insights, an independent research and consulting firm, handled the tabulation and analysis of the survey.
For those looking for a copy of the complete report, the 2024 Salary, Hourly Wage & Benefits Report is available for purchase by visiting to www.AICCbox.org/store or
Scan the QR code to get your copy of the 2024 Salary, Hourly Wage & Benefits Report
by scanning the QR code above. To show our appreciation, AICC has provided the finished report to all participating companies free of charge.
For those who did not participate, the member price is $225, and the nonmember price is $425.

The Family Connection
BY JEFF DIETZ
The corrugated industry is built on innovation, resilience, and hard work, but at its core, it’s deeply rooted in family values. Many independent box plants are family-owned, with multiple generations contributing to their growth and success. Beyond ownership, the concept of family extends to every aspect of the business, connecting operators, engineers, sales reps, and the often unsung support from spouses and children. These family ties create a unique culture that strengthens companies and the entire industry.
Independent box plants often start as family ventures, with founders pouring passion and expertise into the business. As these companies are passed through generations, they carry with them the values, traditions, and lessons learned over the years. This family legacy fosters loyalty, trust, and dedication among employees, with each generation contributing new ideas while honoring past achievements.
In family-owned plants, a sense of stewardship inspires each generation to preserve the legacy while driving innovation and growth. It’s common to find multiple generations working together, blending experience with fresh perspectives. This dynamic allows these companies to remain agile and adaptive to changing market conditions while preserving their foundational values.
The Backbone of the Industry
At the heart of every independent box plant are the hardworking individuals whose dedication drives the industry. These “workhorses” include plant workers, service technicians, sales representatives, and office staff, all of whom contribute their expertise and passion day after day.
Plant workers endure long hours and often lengthy commutes to keep production moving smoothly, while service
technicians travel extensively, spending up to 80% of their time on the road to ensure machinery stays operational. Sales representatives are constantly on the go, connecting clients with innovative solutions and expanding growth opportunities. Meanwhile, office staff members handle administrative and logistical tasks essential to the business. Many have spent their entire careers in the industry, their commitment providing stability and continuity. Yet, we’d be remiss not to recognize that behind every industry professional stands a supportive family. Spouses, children, and extended family provide the emotional foundation that allows these professionals to excel in a demanding field. Spouses often act as trusted advisors, sharing perspective and encouragement, celebrating victories, and offering comfort. Children inspire their parents or step into the industry themselves, helping to sustain the family legacy. This familial support is integral to the success and resilience of the corrugated industry.
In the corrugated sector, where family businesses and generational ties are common, the strength of family support is more than a personal asset—it’s a core element of the industry’s foundation and future.
Impact of Family Culture
Family isn’t just a theme in the independent corrugated industry—it’s the heartbeat of the sector. From the legacy of family-owned plants to the familial bonds among operators, sales reps, the Association, and the support provided by spouses and children, family is woven into every aspect of the business.

International Corrugated Packaging Foundation
A Letter From ICPF’s President
Editor’s note: This letter was written and submitted to BoxScore at the end of 2024.
As 2024 comes to a close, the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) is proud of the momentum we’ve built to address the workforce needs of the corrugated packaging industry. By following our Strategic Road Map, we’ve developed and implemented ongoing strategies to strengthen existing programs, initiate outreach, increase industry awareness, and evaluate impactful partnerships. I’m happy to share that we’ve achieved and made progress toward many of the foundation’s short-term objectives within each of the four road map pillars.
This year was all about bringing ICPF into the 21st century to ensure relevance for today’s students and job seekers. We launched a brand new, user-friendly website, www.careersincorrugated.com , to serve as a comprehensive resource hub tailored to the foundation’s many stakeholders, while also providing a trusted landing site to educate younger generations on career opportunities in our industry.
We released a new edition of ICPF’s Corrugated Industry Curricula for educational partners. The Curricula was completely updated and redesigned into five easy-to-digest video modules, each highlighting an important element of the corrugated packaging industry and the box-making process. Additional components included interactive worksheets, quizzes, and testimonial videos from current industry employees and other industry resources. This was a vast contrast to the black-and-white PDF files which had been given to educational partners in the past.
We premiered a new corrugated packaging industry career highlight and recruitment video, Consider a Future in Corrugated Packaging, which ICPF used in organic and paid advertising efforts across ICPF’s social media channels this year. The video was one of many recruitment and retention resources developed by ICPF in 2024 to aid corporate partners with their industry outreach efforts. You can see many of those resources and tool kits highlighted in the pages of this report.
ICPF also spent time exploring industry-specific certificates and tracks at trade schools and community colleges to build the industry’s talent pipeline. From these efforts, we’ve pledged to provide a grant to Ivy Tech Community College awarding up to $50,000 in student scholarships for two newly created corrugated industry Interdisciplinary Workforce Degrees, Machine Operators and Maintenance Technicians. Look for more information to be shared as this program ramps up next year, and as we find additional educational institutions to partner with.
Part of ICPF’s approach to increase awareness of the corrugated packaging industry is working to change the narrative so younger students learn and know about the many amazing careers that exist. We are looking to get more students interested in industry positions and choosing educational paths that will lead to industry jobs. This is why ICPF is currently working to expand our outreach beyond colleges and universities to community colleges, trade and vocational schools, and middle and high school students.
This year, ICPF signed a multiyear partnership with Project Learning Tree, an SFI initiative to increase youth awareness of corrugated industry careers.
This approach aims to elevate the profile of the corrugated packaging industry earlier, as students participate in career exploration, planning, and development. We’re excited to see that partnership come together over the next year and will be sure to keep you apprised every step of the way.
ICPF also implemented our first round of annual surveys for the foundation’s partners in an effort to benchmark our progress toward shortterm objectives and long-term goals. Hiring representatives from corrugated packaging companies and instructors from educational institutions completed survey questions that focused on current industry challenges, the most pressing needs for hiring managers and educators alike, as well as the ways in which ICPF can continue to add value for our Corporate and University Partners. We’ve used and will continue to use feedback from the surveys to inform future strategies and offerings. The great news is that 90.5% of respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with the direction of ICPF in the past year.
Momentum is not a single event; it’s built over time. It’s the result of several things coming together to create a movement that is powerful and, in some contexts, difficult to stop. Our combined industry efforts are gaining speed, and now is the time we push the pedal to the floor. Together, we will make a difference.
Thanks,
Caitlin Salaverria ICPF President
The Final Score
Big Associate Issue VIII!
It is hard to believe that it has only been for the past eight years that BoxScore has given virtually the entire content of one of its six annual issues to AICC’s supplier members, the Associates. It is hard to believe because for nearly the entirety of AICC’s now more than 50 years of existence, AICC’s supplier members have been an integral part of AICC boxmaker members’ businesses. And Associate members have been a constant at AICC.
Presence. That is what AICC Associate members have. They are a valued part of this industry and of this Association. They are partners in each AICC member’s business and, with the amazing support technology available these days, have a 24/7 relationship.
Independent boxmakers have always been innovators. First to try this or to launch that, open to the latest ideas and ways—agile leaders that collaborate freely with their trusted partners supplying equipment, software, services, and solutions. It has been the independent’s recipe for success and a blueprint for suppliers to continue to push the envelope and deliver the newest and latest developments. Independents and their suppliers are responsible for a multitude of industry firsts. Today, the independent boxmaker is efficient, competitive, and positioned well for the future, results of their decadeslong partnerships with suppliers.
I remember my days as an AICC Associate member and the training I received. Part of that training was that to “know your customer’s business” was the key to success. So many of my colleagues across the spectrum of suppliers, competitors, and colleagues took that lesson to heart. This, along with the open mind to innovation mentioned above, are the keys to a healthy and thriving industry.
Suppliers have also been very generous with AICC over the years. AICC brings members together, providing opportunities for the suppliers. Associate members sponsor so many activities at AICC, from national and regional meetings and golf tournaments to webinars and everything in between. They participate in AICC’s standing committees and its board of directors. They have a voice, and that voice makes a difference in this Association.
AICC is grateful for this support. AICC celebrates its Associate members.
