A NEW FRONTIER. That’s what comes to mind as I recount my experience at the AICI Global Conference in Mexico City this past May. A new frontier in sustainable fashion, a new International Board of Directors, the digital space, in certified members, shaping an academic generation, and in the vision and collaborative relationships among members from around the globe. It was inspiring to sit in the midst of what feels like a front seat to the new age of image consulting. In this issue you’ll have an opportunity to see some of the highlights of the conference, although these highlights do not do justice to the sights, sounds, and feel of the actual conference. From the hospitality of the Mexico City chapter, to our guest speakers, the high-powered workshops, a stunning fashion show, and the celebration of the incredible work of our outgoing board of directors, this year’s conference proved a complete success. In addition, you’ll read articles from Carolina D. Tan, AICI CIC, who will talk about what to do with your newfound knowledge obtained at conference and how to utilize the global and etiquette standards developed by IITTI. You’ll meet your new International Board of Directors and our featured member, Mia LaMotte, AICI CIC, who is completing her second year as President of the Atlanta, Georgia, AICI Chapter. Finally, we’re looking for a few fabulous consultants! We’re looking for those interested in lending their social media and marketing skills, as well as someone interested in being in the forefront of our educational endeavors. Serving on the Marketing and Education committee will afford you points for your CIC and CIP and exercise your leadership skills. Learn more about how to apply in this edition. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

O

n my way to the AICI Conference in Mexico City, I wondered what it is that makes the AICI Conference one of the most exciting events in my life. Is it because I will see my AICI friends again after a twoyear absence? Will I meet new, exciting colleagues from all over the globe? That’s definitely a benefit, but not the only one. Is it because I will get the best education that fits my interest and needs from fabulous worldclass trainers? Maybe it’s the benefit of getting most of my CEUs for the year in just one week? Sure, this is clearly an important aspect of attending conference, but even that’s not my key reason. I do secretly enjoy getting dressed up every day and even changing during the day for the various events scheduled throughout conference. It’s nice living like a princess for week, a lifestyle I don’t get to indulge in at home. Of the many reasons that cause me to look forward to our International Conference, it’s the absolute surety of being excited and inspired about my profession and my work for another two years until the next conference. The opportunity to have conversations with colleagues from around the world on ideas that matter to them and turn around and brainstorm ways to turn those ideas into reality brings me great joy. Sharing a space with others who are as passionate as I am about our profession and knowing that while our language differs, our mission is unified and inspiring. Knowing others

are eager to grow, to learn, and make a difference in the world, as I do, comforts and assures me I’m in the right place. Finally, as the International President I take pride in finding ways of letting the world know about the impact our work can have for them. Where inspiration flows so easily and freely, the rest will take care of itself. It clears the path for new business ventures, thinking bigger, and taking fresh new steps. In the interim, I look forward to participating with my fellow members at events both in person and online, bridging the twoyear gap between the International Conferences. What will you do in this two-year gap? What bold decisions and steps will you take in AICI? Will it be to advance your certification or take a leadership role in an aspect of AICI that speaks to you? Whatever bold steps you take, in the end, they will benefit not only AICI but YOU, both personally and professionally. What is the next step for you in AICI? I look forward to being inspired by your next move.

I’M BEAUTIFUL IN MY OWN WAY -

LESSONS FROM LADY GAGA BY DR. CAROL PARKER WALSH

H

oward Roberts, marketing guru extraordinare and winner of IMMIE Bravo Award, returned to our conference stage this year this time using Lady Gaga as inspiration. Housed within the four key points: (1) Branding Matters, (2) Authenticity Rules, (3) Curiosity and Insight are Major, and (4) Think Different, Howard elaborated using quotes from Lady Gaga to clarify each point. Our profession is not about one-size fits all, as we make evident to our countless clients. As such, we as image consultants have to approach our work with the same nuanced individuality and uniqueness. In a truly moving and content-rich presentation, Howard offered 15 subpoints to help us and our client be amazing in our own way.

8 | July 2017 magazine

FIND YOUR DNA AND LIVE IT - “My fashion is part of who I am. And though I was not born with these clothes on, I was born this way.” -Lady Gaga What’s in my DNA? What do you believe your all about? What makes you, you? It’s what we do that makes us unique. Rather it’s the belief in what we do, our product and what it can do for our clients. What we represent should make us and our clients FEEL something and be inspired.

KNOW YOUR VALUE - “Kids need to learn to express who they are and seek value in it” - Lady Gaga It’s important that we strive for value, not success. Success will come. Ask yourself what value you bring to your clients. What benefit do you bring? One of our key purposes daily should be finding ways to bring value to live of our customers. CRAFT YOUR UNIQUENESS - “Being different is easy. But to be unique it’s a complicated thing.” - Lady Gaga Understand and release your uniqueness. Everything from the pen you write with, the clothes you wear, and glasses on your face should represent your uniqueness. Moreover, people should know your uniqueness immediately, on site, without question. Moreover, we need to help your clients do the same. People trash over eight garbage bags of clothes every year which has caused up to 26 billion pounds of landfill every year. Why? Because we don’t know our own uniqueness. As Lady Gaga, we should be “obsessively opposed to the typical.” This will not only help us stand out in the market and find our tribe, it will enrich the lives of our clients personally and financially.

UNLESS YOUR INNER NEW YORKER - “I don’t like los angels. The people are awful and terribly shallow, and everybody wants to be famous and nobody wants to play the game. I’m from New York. I’ll kill to get what I need.” - Lady Gaga Turn your NOs into YES! Find a way to be creative, adaptive, and flexible. Don’t let obstacles keep you from going after and achieving the things you want in life. Steve Jobs was told that the Apple iPad isn’t a compelling incentive to get mainstream consumers to buy it and Walt Disney was fired from a job for lacking creativity. If these individuals let NO be NO, we wouldn’t have the ability to participate in the incredible gifts they gave.

CHALLENGE CONVENTION “You define beauty for yourself. Society doesn’t define your beauty. Your spirit and your father define your beauty.” - Lady Gaga

BE UNFORGETTABLE - “I don’t need anybody’s permission to be remembered. I will be. Whether they like it or not.” - Lady Gaga Similar to your own uniqueness, what make you unforgettable in the eyes of others around you or in the eyes of your clients. Being unforgettable will make them come back to you year after year because what you provide and how you provide it is unforgettable.

GO TO THE DARK SIDE - “if you don’t have any shadows you’re not standing in the light” - Lady Gaga A moment of honesty and truth will make you more credible than trying to act as if you’re the best or you know it all. People trust vulnerability and imperfection. Authenticity will always rule so don’t be afraid admit you don’t know everything, that maybe you’re not the best, but you have a heart to give it all you’ve got!

CHALLENGE CONVENTION - “You define beauty for yourself. Society doesn’t define your beauty. Your spirit and your father define your beauty.” - Lady Gaga The key here is don’t be stereotypical. If everyone is going left, try out right. Covergirl was bold enough to launch a young male as the face of their campaign and Ashley Graham as brought rightsized the plus size industry. Don’t be afraid to challenge convention and create a new standard.

As Maya Anagelou noted, “people will forget what you said, what you did, but not how you made them feel.”

The Association of Image Consultants International | 9

DETAILS ARE EVERYTHING - “If I decide to make a coat red in the show, it’s not just red, I think….Is it communist red? Is it cherry cordial” Is it ruby red” or is it apple red?” - Lady Gaga Do you know all the special little details about your client? Their favorite coffee, tea, activity? Do you surprise them with something special that only you would know because you pay attention to every detail of who they are and what they love? You’ll stand out in their eyes and make them come back for me.

your ritual, your mantra, your act? Cirque du Soliel isn’t just a show, it’s a breathtaking experience. ADD A DOSE OF SPARKLE - “And now I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.” - Lady Gaga What’s that special sparkle that you’ll bring into the lives of others? How often do you bring that sparkle? Remind yourself to bring a little sparkle into someone else’s life each day.

SHINE STRONG - “Don’t allow people to dim your thing because they are blinded. Tell them to put on sunglasses” - Lady Gaga

NO TRANSACTIONS, EVER - “I don’t want the $5 in your pocket, I want your soul.” - Lady Gaga

Great moments of excitement, fantasy, and fun for your clients. Take what may be ordinary in the mind of others and turn it into something magical that stands out for your client.

Connect at the soul level with your clients. Don’t think of them as transactions, truly consider building relationships. When you connect at a soul level people will always come back. Your ROI should not be return on investment, rather a return on involvement.

MIX IT UP - “I’m not a sandwich store that only sells turkey sandwiches, I sell a lot of different things.” - Lady Gaga

BE TRUE - “They are the kings and queens, I am a devoted jester.” - Lady Gaga

Keep things fresh and interesting. Sometimes you have to let go in order to create anew. FIND YOUR PARTNERS (THE RIGHT ONES) - “Live your eyeliner, breathe your lipstick, and kill for each other.” - Lady Gaga There’s nothing like the power of partnerships; however, be careful of the advice you get from those not truly aligned with or who don’t understand your brand. Seek out those who inspire you and give you inspiration. Project your brand and look to other brands for ideas and inspiration. IT’S SHOWTIME FOLKS - “So basically I did this whole show carrying 100lbs looking out of one eye, dancing and then my chest explodes at the end. It’s not as easy as it looks!” - Lady Gaga Everything you do is SHOWTIME! EVERYTHING social media, how you show up, what you say, your communication, every impression counts. What’s

A NEW GLOBAL STANDARD: HOW THE INTERNATIONAL IMAGE & ETIQUETTE STANDARDS CAN HELP IMAGE CONSULTANTS & ORGANIZATIONS BY CAROLINA D. TAN, AICI CIC

12 | July 2017 magazine

As image consultants, we are our own brand. However, what really differentiates us from others? Is it our company name, the product or services we provide, or the way we train new consultants in the industry? The uniqueness of our brands makes us appealing to a variety of clients who are looking for our unique brand.

I

magine, however, your client runs a multinational company with 20 branch offices in 10 countries. How can you make sure everyone (local and expats) can work smoothly together, knowing they have different cultural backgrounds, and may also have different expectations? Would it be better to offer a variety of unique and differentiated brands and solutions or one unified global solution that’s been tested and proved effective around the world? A global standard that’s recognized and appreciated for its consistency.

Through our organization we can certify job-seekers, which will make them more marketable and improve their chances of landing a job. We can also certify employers, which will demonstrate to their customers, vendors, and competitors that they value people skills and working across cultures. Employers can also include a requirement for certification in their job descriptions and job advertisements.

By standardizing etiquette and civility, two key cornerstones of our industry, we can raise awareness regarding the importance of these attributes and ultimately help to improve company culture & communication.

Engineers, lawyers, nurses and doctors have uniform standards that provide the confidence in their professions and in those hiring anyone of these professionals. As Patrick Chun noted, “There are currently 800,000 licensed professional engineers in the USA and Canada. The market understands the engineering profession because of these standards and as such has the confidence to hire and pay for engineering services.” Today, image consultants can use the added benefit of IITTI for their current business operations. Using a global standard adds professionalism and trustworthiness. Measurable standards that provide results is something corporate clients demand. While we may know image training works, there’s no consistency across our personal brands and practices. By standardizing etiquette and civility, two key cornerstones of our industry, we can raise awareness regarding the importance of these attributes and ultimately help to improve company culture and communication.

IITTI is tool open for all image and etiquette trainers. Simply submit an application and comply with the requirements which can be found on the website. In addition, any image consulting school can readily download the Standards & Guidelines and build their training program around these global standards. This ensures a potentially large pool of IITTI graduates from which various companies can eventually hire. Ultimately this creates a win-win for both image consultants and organizations alike.

CAROLINA D. TAN, AICI CIC is president of ENHANCE YOUR IMAGE Training Consultancy from the AICI Philippine Chapter. She is a former model, tv host & cum laude graduate from the University of Santo Tomas. Today she is also the Rocktell Master Franchisor & IITTI Associate for the Philippines.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

MIA LAMOTTE, AICI CIC

BY CAROL PARKER WALSH, JD, PHD, AICI CIC, FFSM

T

he Member Spotlights are truly one of my favorite sections of this publication. It reminds me that I’m in the company of incredibly innovative, experienced, and brilliant women and men in this industry. As professional image consultants we touch and transform the lives of so many people, professions, and organizations. These spotlights provide just a glimpse into the work that’s being done in the world under the banner of AICI. This month I had the pleasure to sit down with the President of the Atlanta, Georgia Chapter for AICI, Mia LaMotte. We talked about a lot of things including her work co-organizing the very first North American Conference set for 2018. I’m happy to share more from our interview below.

Q. What do you do in your business? A. I am in the business of personal transformation. I love watching my

14 | July 2017 magazine

clients grow and own who they are after I’ve been given the opportunity to provide them with the tools to do that effectively. Most of my clients start off with a service to improve their look. We quickly move into personal growth challenges because this is where their transformation lies. I work with my clients on everything from A to Z. We work together to hone in on their existing talents and skills, while expanding their competencies and help them accentuate their talents. Q. What did you do prior to becoming an image consultant? A. I’ve always loved and have found myself in various professions where I’ve been able to help and transform people. I started my career in the modeling and beauty industry. I then moved on to the judicial branch of government where I have worked with troubled youth and families for over twenty years. During that time, I have been able to watch many families transform and change their lives through our work together. Q. What’s the focus of your image practice? (individual, corporate, etiquette, all?) A. My overbearing focus is mindset. In my image practice, I work with professionals who are ready for advancement and who are ready to have their dream life but haven’t been able to accomplish that on their own. Throughout my career and through this work I have realized that most of what was holding me back from having the life I wanted, was my limiting beliefs. That realization has allowed me to incorporate what I’ve learned on my own transformational journey into my practice.

Q. Why did you seek your CIC certification? A. I sought my CIC for several reasons. I have always felt it’s important and have been involved in professional organizations that are cutting edge and help their members grow. It made sense to me to seek out the first level of certification. Another reason I wanted to obtain my CIC was to stand out from others in the industry. It takes a greater level of commitment and knowledge to earn certifications. I want my clients to know that I bring those attributes to our work together and work just as hard on them as I have on myself and my business. Additionally, earning this first level of certification has given me more confidence to pursue the subsequent levels of certification. Q. Are you going for your CIP and CIM? Why? A. Absolutely! I am excited about achieving the additional levels of certification. I have learned so much through my work with AICI and I want to continue to grow as a consultant. After our conference in Mexico City, I was so inspired that I applied for CIP, the following week. I also want to have a voice in how we continue to grow as an organization and as an industry. Q. What made you get involved in leadership in AICI? A. Initially, I believed that I got involved in AICI leadership in order to meet the requirement of obtaining CIC. I quickly realized that through my contribution as a board member, I was the one who was gaining much more than I had ever imagined. I have gained many new skills, I’ve learned about new technologies and I’ve made lifelong friends as well.

The Association of Image Consultants International | 15

Looking back on this experience, I am amazed and thrilled about what I’ve gained when I had thought I was the one who was contributing! Q. What 2-3 things do you think consultants can do to improve and expand their business? A. Hire an Image Consultant! First and foremost, the one thing you can do to grow your business is to get an image consultant of your own. I really don’t think we utilize the professionals we have at our fingertips enough. I continue to work on myself and hiring someone to help me do that is very important and has been transformational. Hire a Business Coach! Having a business coach has also been an integral part of having my business grow. It wasn’t until I worked with my coach, that I understood I could have the business I have always desired. Hire People Who Are Experts! Once I realized I didn’t have to know how to do everything to get started, it freed me up to do the things I love in my business. So whatever it is that isn’t your strong suit, find someone else to do it for you. It will save you heartache, time

16 | July 2017 magazine

and money. For example, I have no idea how to build a website the right way. I know how I want it to look, but I had no idea how to make that happen. I have someone working on that for me and it frees me up to have more energy to help my clients with their transformations. Finally, do what you love and your passion will shine through so that you can be of optimal benefit to your clients!

CONFERENCE SPECIAL

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE BY: CAROLINA D. TAN, AICI CIC

J

ulius Caesar once said, “Experience is the teacher of all things.” I’ve come to learn that hearing is not the same as seeing and being physically present. As I recall back two years ago to my time in Washington, DC at the AICI 25th Anniversary Conference, everything was new and strange for a first timer like me. Being naturally curious and talkative, meeting people for the first time was an enlightening experience. The next thing I knew, new friendships were formed from the common meeting of the minds.

18 | July 2017 magazine

With all of the new information we’ve received, consider how it may be relevant to your clients and the mission and goals of your business.

Fast forward to the 2017 AICI Global Conference, I came to this conference a bit more experienced and even more excited to learn what was in store for me. From my experiences at the 2015 conference in Washington, DC I knew how to

What we do as professional consultants does not begin and end with the ABCs of image. Ask yourself: “What can I add and do differently this year?” • APPRECIATE THE NEW TOPICS OFFERED. There was a wealth of new and innovated ideas presented that each of us can use in our respective image practices. From Stacy Flynn (Founder, Evrnu) with her talk about “Sustainable Fashion”, Howard Roberts (Marketing Guru Grey Global Group) on “The Power of Authentic Beauty” using Lady Gaga as an iconic example, and Mindy Sheier (Founder, Runway of Dreams) on “Adaptive Clothing” your mind may be reeling with ideas on how to use this information in your business. With all of the new information we’ve received, consider how it may be relevant to your clients and the mission and goals of your business. • GO AFTER YOUR CERTIFICATION. If you’ve been an image consultant for more than two years, it may be time to consider advancing your standing in the industry by achieving your CIC. If you’ve been a CIC for some time consider your CIP and then CIM.

prepare for a successful conference in Mexico City. Now that we’re post conference, I want to share five tips on how to reinforce the learning and make the most of your conference experience.

• CONSIDER OFFERING YOUR EXPERTISE AT THE NEXT CONFERENCE. Offer an aspect of your unique signature program or specialized techniques for the benefit of attendees. Be generous with your knowledge because what you share today will create a ripple effect in the months and years to come in the lives and businesses of your fellow consultants. • FOSTER INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND BE OPEN TO BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES. consultants does not begin and end with the ABCs of image. Ask yourself: “What can I add and do differently this year?” “Who should I connect with and explore collaborative opportunities?” • VOLUNTEER AND LEAD. Is the time right to step up and accept leadership positions in your chapter or maybe at the international level? Taking on a leadership role doesn’t mean you have to take on a board position, but you can volunteer on a committee or on an ad hoc basis. Your contribution may just be what you and the organization need.

CONFERENCE SPECIAL

INTRODUCING YOUR NEW

AICI INTERNATIONAL GLOBAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS BY DONNA CAMERON

W

e’re excited to formally introduce you to our new AICI International Board members! For those who have served on boards at the local or international levels in the past, you know the dedication and extra effort required to serve in this capacity. In addition to working on behalf of the membership and the organization, as board members there’s also great rewards that come from being a part of a professional team. In order for our membership to learn more about their new board we asked them four basic questions to showcase the breadth of experience and expertise each member brings to our organization. You will see that each approaches image consulting slightly different and that this Board truly reflects the international nature of AICI.

The Questions Asked Were: 1. Where are you based and where are you from originally? 2. What attracted you to image consulting? 3. What’s your specialty? 4. What did you do prior to becoming an image consultant?

RIET DE VLIEGER, AICI CIP President 1. I was born in the Netherlands and still live there. 2. I am passionate about image consulting because working in this field means having an impact on people’s lives on a much deeper level than most people think. There is such a richness of our profession. Every image consultant can specialize and bring their own unique skills and talents and by doing so expand the profession. I also love that image consulting is holistic. I look at people as a whole: who they are, what they do, their goals, environment and lifestyle. And from there I look at their communication skills and how they can be improved. It’s exciting knowing each experience will be new, unique and special. As a result I feel fulfilled both as a person and as a professional. 3. I specialize in training image consultants, and developing and implementing educational programs for schools. In my practice I focus on helping introverted women in STEM professions become more visible in order to accelerate in their career. 4. I worked as a speech therapist for 15 years before starting my career as an image consultant. There are similarities in these two roles as they both focus on helping clients remove obstacles and learn new skills to communicate better. GAIL MORGAN, AICI CIP Secretary 1. Hertfordshire, UK and I was born in Liverpool, UK.

The Association of Image Consultants International | 21

2. W hat attracted me originally was seeing the difference a color analysis made to my mother’s life. What I enjoy now is seeing the confidence and joy in my client’s eyes and seeing my trainees grow as they develop their businesses. 3. Training other people to become image consultants and personal stylists, speaking, shopping and working in women’s wardrobes. 4. Retail management. CHRIS FULKERSON, AICI CIP, FFS Treasurer 1. I live in Louisville, Kentucky and am a member of the Atlanta Chapter. 2. I am dedicated to helping women look and feel their very best using clothing as the tool for transformation. 3. In addition to corporate seminars, I work with clients on closet audits, building wardrobes for highprofile individuals. I’m also a licensed Fashion Feng Shui practitioner. 4. I have been in the image business all my life, having begun as a model. I also hold a Fashion Merchandising degree from Patricia Stevens Career College. ANA CHEONG CHEOK YIN, AICI CIP VP Certification 1. I am a member of AICI Malaysia Chapter and together with my partner I operate a corporate consulting firm that is based in Malaysia. 2. Working in the industry has helped me realize how important image is to an individual. Image, coupled with an impeccable brand can catapult a person to greater heights. My passion is helping others gain a greater understanding of themselves while leveraging the science of image management to improve their lives and career. Witnessing these transformations renews my confidence daily.

22 | July 2017 magazine

3. I specialize in the area of ‘Dressing for Well-Being”. Too many good people fall prey to diseases simply because they are not aware of potential hazards of wrong clothing and harmful materials. We enable people to learn about themselves and plan to help them reju-venate not just their image, but their health, attitude, behavior and capabilities. Working with non-profit researchers endowed me with the knowledge of brain cognition and cau-sality of modern day diseases which I incorporate into my programs today. 4. I started in the cosmetic industry, then moved on to high end fashion retailing, before joining the corporate industry as a secretarial executive and executive assistant. YAN (LUCY) LIANG, AICI CIP VP Business Development 1. I’m the founder and President of IDEO Image and have offices in both China and New York. 2. The love the versatility and complexity of the profession. I enjoy seeing the passion in the eyes of my new students as they embark upon their career. It’s also powerful to see executives and corporate employees increase their productivity or advance in their field as a result of a strong image management program. 3. As a corporate trainer, I provide programs across image management, corporate protocol and social etiquette. I have a weekly radio show “InFashion” on Chinese American Voice Station and it’s one of the most popular local programs in China. I am devoted to providing the highest standards of professionalism in every area of our industry in both China and the United States. 4.
