Genetically speaking, Coco (Gabrielle) Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld could not be more different, nor did they ever meet. Nonetheless, never more than in their case was the latter able to “reinvent” the former in such a way that Chanel has lost none of its instant recognisability.

If Mademoiselle shocked the jeunesse dorée of the early 20th century in the country residence of her noble bel ami by wearing men’s cardigans and trousers, in 2004 Lagerfeld, in his gold stuccoed rooms at his Parisian Hotel Particulier, designed a collection for high street chain H&M, scandalising the haute couture world, while setting a successful precedent for many other designers. If she, once wealth and fame came along, maintained avant-garde artists such as Diaghilev and Stravinsky, he invites “rebellious” rock singers and pop stars such as Lily Allen to the front row of his shows,

wisely anticipating the pulling power over the trendiest generations to which the fashion universe feels it belongs. Both are indefatigable workers tapping into their instinct and passion (“what I like about the work is the work”, he once declared), and both are champions of thinness: “You can never be too thin or too rich” affirmed Coco (or Wallis Simpson); Karl lost 99 lb. to get into the tight-fitting jeans ever present in his collections (“to survive” - he says - “you have to be your own trend”) and the only luxury he now lets pass his lips is a glass of Diet Coke.

In Spring 2001 when Lagerfeld proposed scruffy-haired, insolent fashion (because you have to be “daring, daring, daring”), he had already been at the creative helm of Chanel for almost twenty years and it seemed that his versatile flair had much more to reveal. Indeed, he also designs ready to wear for Fendi and his eponymous line Lagerfeld Gallery, he is a fashion photographer and editor with the 7L label. Under Karl’s guidance, Coco Chanel’s lean, bon-ton suits have changed: they have shortened and been influenced by aerobics, grunge and street style, Baroque decoration and jeans, yet they have magically retained Mademoiselle’s unique qualities and anti-conformist snobbery, as well as the tailoring and super-high price tag. The brand based in Rue Cambon continuously updates the legend surrounding its symbols - from the camellia to the strings of fake pearls - and remains above any clearance sale, imitation (of which there are many in Asia), and fierce industrialisation. He can afford to keep running and cultivating five hectares of jasmine and five of cabbage roses in the hills of Grasse (not in Turkey or Bulgaria where labour costs less and the quality of the flower is inferior) in order to distil the “absolute” for the insurmountable Chanel n°5, to

Quando nella primavera del 2001 Lagerfeld propone una moda spettinata e sfacciata perché bisogna «osare, osare, osare», è già da quasi vent’anni al timone creativo di Chanel e sembra che il suo estro versatile abbia ancora molto da inventare. Infatti disegna anche il prêt-à-porter di Fendi e la sua linea eponima Lagerfeld Gallery, è fotografo di moda ed editore con l’etichetta 7L. Sotto la guida di Karl, i completi smilzi e bon ton di Coco Chanel sono diventati altra cosa: si sono accorciati e sono stati contaminati dall’aerobica, dal grunge e dallo street style, dai decori barocchi e dal jeans, eppure hanno magicamente mantenuto l’unicità e la snobbery anticonformista di Mademoiselle, oltre alla lavorazione sartoriale e al prezzo elevatissimo. La griffe di rue Cambon rinnova continuamente il mito dei propri simboli - dalla camelia ai fili di perle finte - e si mantiene al di sopra di ogni svendita, di ogni copia (a quintali nei paesi asiatici), di ogni industrializzazione selvaggia.

shut down the Grand Palais for a whole week while setting up his shows, and to remain financially independent of any international luxury group. But when change is necessary he does not hesitate - as when he ended the decade-old contract with French icon Carole Bouquet to go with the younger and more intriguing Anna Mouglalis. And when sending a motorcyclist dressed all in leather down the runway, he does it with lingerie on show, in true boudoir style.

Chanel was behind the costumes of Fanny Ardant, when she played Maria Callas in the 2002 film released on the 25th anniversary of the singer’s death, and behind the vest and the kite that fans of the double C displayed on the beach the following year, and the ski suit and snowboard popular on the winter pistes of St. Moritz. Ideally, Chanel clients are increasingly younger and sportier, at least in the imagination of Lagerfeld, who has dedicated a new light and fruity fragrance, called Chance, to his “tweed girls”. But the real coup de théâtre was reserved for the brand’s masterpiece, Chanel n°5. In September 2005, the statuesque Nicole Kidman appeared on the runway arm in arm with Karl, and generated so much admiration and attention that Naomi Campbell stormed off in a tantrum. The actress’s appearance was not just a whim on the part of the designer; it was to announce the high profile commercial due to premiere in November for the re-launch of the fragrance. At a cost of 18 million dollars, it was directed by Baz Luhrmann who had recently enjoyed great success with Kidman in Moulin Rouge. The short movie is a concentration of luxury and seduction that features the actress running through a Parisian night, wearing a pink dress with a train that (legend has it) weighed 33 lb., and, of course, an evanescent cloud of numéro cinq. Sono idealmente sempre più giovani e sportive le clienti Chanel, almeno nella fantasia di Lagerfeld che a loro, le “signorine tweed”, dedica una nuova fragranza, leggera e fruttata, chiamata Chance. Ma è sul masterpiece della maison, lo Chanel n°5, che si prepara il coup de théâtre. Nel settembre del 2005 infatti compare in passerella, a braccetto di Karl, la statuaria Nicole Kidman, tanto ammirata e fotografata da far ingelosire Naomi Campbell che gira i tacchi e se ne va. La presenza dell’attrice tuttavia non è un capriccio dello stilista; è l’annuncio del mega spot che uscirà a novembre per reclamizzare il profumo. Costato 18 milioni di dollari, è girato da Baz Luhrmann che ha appena diretto la Kidman con grande successo in Moulin Rouge. In 2007 the kaiser returned to centre stage: from the ever more acclaimed shows to the photos shot by him for Playboy, to the documentary Lagerfeld Confidential, which reveals his daily routine in his book-filled and unexpectedly untidy studio, in the rehearsal rooms for the premières, in the photo shoots and during his meagre dinners, often eaten alone, in which he is shot from the back, perhaps so as not to reveal the secrets of his newly trimmed-down figure. On the other hand, the cinema is the source of great satisfaction, where Coco enjoys a golden season: three films (in 2008 and 2009) look at the human and professional story of the couturière. The first, shot for television, stars Shirley MacLaine, the second, directed

by Anne Fontaine, gives the role of Coco to Audrey Tautou and the third, by Jan Kounen, casts Anna Mouglalis, the brand’s face for jewellery, in the role of the French designer.

For a celebration fit for such a history, the brand enlisted architect Zaha Hadid to design a “portable” museum, a futuristic travelling structure measuring seven hundred square metres in size, the Chanel Contemporary Art Container. Exhibited inside were the works of nineteen international artists dedicated to the handbag. Inaugurated in Hong Kong, the architectural gem toured the world until 2010, visiting Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, London, Moscow and Paris.

In the meantime, the collections featuring the double C explored an array of panoramas and horizons, from the murky, misty urban suburbs of autumn/winter 2008.09 to the flowery campaign of spring/summer 2010, to the hyperbolic igloo constructed with 240 tons of snow brought in from Greenland as a backdrop to the yeti women covered head to foot in fur for autumn/winter 2010.11. More spectacles than fashion shows, targeting mainly the new consumers of global luxury, i.e. young Russian heiresses and Middle Eastern princesses, Chinese power women and wealthy Brazilians, all fascinated by the longrunning Chanel legend. In the first year of the new decade, Lagerfeld gave a legendary, Greco-Roman interpretation to the Pirelli calendar. Different eras and ages overlap in his creative vision, as he himself declares: “I have no sense of time, I float in a timeless space”.

Le collezioni con la doppia C nel frattempo esplorano diversi panorami e orizzonti, dalle periferie urbane brumose e un po’ fané dell’autunno/inverno 2008.09 alla campagna fiorita della primavera/estate 2010, fino all’iperbolico igloo costruito con 240 tonnellate di neve ghiacciata fatta arrivare dalla Groenlandia che incornicia le donne-yeti impellicciate dalla testa ai piedi nell’autunno/inverno 2010.11. Più spettacoli che défilé, destinati soprattutto alle nuove consumatrici del lusso globale: le giovani ereditiere russe e le principesse mediorientali, le power women cinesi e le ricche brasiliane, tutte affascinate dall’eterno mito di Chanel. E proprio al mito, ma nel più greco-romano dei significati, Lagerfeld dedica la sua interpretazione del calendario Pirelli nel primo anno del nuovo decennio. Le epoche infatti si sovrappongono nella sua visione creativa, come lui stesso dichiara: «non ho nessun senso del tempo, galleggio in uno spazio atemporale».

Madame pulls on thick tights or lowers the hemline and goes back to black for the winter wardrobe. The Chanel woman seems to have suddenly matured, rediscovering classic tweed and bouclé wool for suits that smarten up even the most rock-chick look, which seems to have been the express intention of this collection’s creator. The gutsy/bon-ton contrast is seen in the visible lingerie, in the black Dumbo boots, and in the chain metal hair extensions. There is no shortage of teeny shorts, but these can be covered by long coats, or gold and retro passementerie. The live set by the band La vie est belle rams the collection’s overall message home.

Madame rimette le calze grosse oppure allunga le gonne e torna al nero come divisa per l’inverno. Sembra improvvisamente maturata la donna proposta da Chanel, che riscopre la classicità del tweed e della lana bouclé per completi che rendono elegante anche lo stile rockettaro, nota di fondo della collezione per espressa dichiarazione del suo creatore. La grinta che contrappunta il bon ton traspare infatti nella lingerie a vista, negli stivali neri a zampa di Dumbo, nelle catenelle intrecciate persino tra le extension dei capelli.

Non mancano gli shorts inguinali, ma si possono coprire con lunghi cappotti, né le passamanerie dorate e rétro. Sul palco un concerto del complesso La vie est belle, casomai qualcuno perdesse il ritmo della collezione.
