ABOUT INDONESIA GENERAL Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of more than 13,000 islands, is one of south east Asia's most diverse treasures. It's remarkable and varied landscape contains innumerable contrasts; from idyllic white sand beaches to fiery volcanoes, and from rugged barren landscapes to dense jungle inhabited by exotic animals.
CULTURE & TRAVEL The Indonesian people themselves are as varied as the landscapes they inhabit. Indonesia is the world's largest Islamic country with 90% of the country's 235m population practicing Muslims, but there are also many other religious influences present in the country including Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. Culture is correspondingly varied and over 350 languages are spoken throughout the archipelago. With a culture and people so rich and diverse, Indonesia is one of south east Asia's most attractive destinations.
ABOUT INDONESIA VISA & TRAVEL COSTS Malaysians need a visa to stay in Indonesia to join Global Volunteer Program which is more than 30 days. The living cost in Indonesia is relatively lower than Malaysia, which differs according to the location of the project. The price range of food in Indonesia is around 25,000 Rp. Ojeks (or ojegs) are motorcycle riders who take pillion passengers for a bargainable price. Large buses aren't used much as a means of city transport except on Java
SOCIETY Limited access to education in rural areas has contributed to increased urbanization as families relocate to cities in order to acquire better education. Furthermore, the number of qualified teachers is still not evenly distributed in rural areas. Global Volunteer Program in Indonesia that focusses on SDG 4 Quality Education plays a very important in bringing more education opportunity and international exposure to underprivileged ones.
ABOUT INDONESIA SOCIETY Environmental issues in Indonesia are associated with the country's high population density and rapid industrialisation, and they are often given a lower priority due to high poverty levels, and an under-resourced governance. Issues include large-scale deforestation (much of it illegal) and related wildfires causing heavy smog over parts of western Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore; over-exploitation of marine resources; and environmental problems associated with rapid urbanisation and economic development, including air pollution, traffic congestion, garbage management, and reliable water and waste water services.
