PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

T

he 2010-2011 year has been a successful one for AIESEC Canada. We achieved the highest number of exchanges realized in our history, a record that has stood strong since the 1986-1987 term. A total of 365 exchanges were delivered, representing the start of a new mindset: Everyday a life is changed through AIESEC Canada’s exchange program.

This year AIESEC Canada dared to achieve significant growth and impact. The number of members in our organization increased by almost 50%. Over 1,800 members from 28 universities across the country lived a life-changing experience, by being part of a global learning environment. They sought on-the-job training for soft skills and hard skills, while managing the local AIESEC offices and operations, and joined several conferences across Canada and other parts of the world. Through the effort to become better leaders, managers, change agents or simply better people, our members’ work generated 20% growth in exchanges compared to previous years and led to a remarkable year for our organization. For over 50 years AIESEC Canada’s work has contributed to Canadian society via exchange projects, creating a healthy environment for the development of our future generation of leaders and by connecting Youth and Business. We look to soar to new heights in the coming years. On behalf of AIESEC Canada, thank you for supporting our membership and the national organization.

Vitor de Avelar, President 2010-2011 AIESEC Canada Inc.

CHAIRMAN’SMESSAGE

iscal 2010-11 saw AIESEC Canada experience healthy growth in its core programs. Overall results for the Global Internship Program grew 20% over the previous year, reflecting both a continuation of the focus on expanding the delivery of this program to the Canadian student marketplace and renewed vigor in selling and delivering this program to Canadian businesses. In fiscal 2010, we directly and indirectly impacted the lives of 1800 young Canadians through our various programs including the Global Internship Program, the Executive Board and Leadership Program and our Annual Skills Development and Awareness Conference Program. The outgoing exchange program saw 20% growth over the prior year as more members sought experiences abroad, while the number of partners participating in the incoming exchange program grew by 9% over the prior year and is well on its way towards a healthy recovery as Canadian organizations re-invest in their operations. In addition, the Skills Development and Awareness Conference Program delivered five successful conferences and provided direct training to over 900 members. Finally, Executive Board and Leadership participation grew by 60% across our national network of 28 universities reflecting a renewed interest by student members in gaining practical personal and professional skills through the management of local chapter operations. As we look forward to next year we remain focused on our core programs, continued responsible fiscal management and are committed to ensuring AIESEC Canada continues to develop socially responsible leaders who have the skills, abilities and aptitudes necessary to succeed in an interconnected world. On behalf of AIESEC Canada, thank you for supporting the organization and our membership across Canada

Barry Jarvis, Chairman AIESEC Canada Inc.

internship with Vale in Brazil was a great experience for me to expand my horizons, learn a new culture and language, and develop my professional career. It was my first time being in South America, and I was fascinated by the Brazilian culture. Throughout my internship, I developed my Portuguese, thanks to the lessons provided by Vale and the support offered by my colleagues. I worked as a Business Partner in IT, and I got the chance to interact with internal clients from different businesses. With the training provided by Vale, I was able to develop fundamental knowledge in the mining industry, which will help my future career a lot. I believe this experience has made a huge impact not just to my career, but to my life.

Micro-Finance Initiatives The Birks Foundation sponsored 3 Canadian interns to work in microfinancing institutions in Senegal and India. Money was lent to the under-privileged to start their individual businesses, in order to promote poverty alleviation. Upon their return, the interns will provide and share the knowledge received with their peers and grow awareness of the micro-finance industry in Canada.

Canadian students are sent annually to explore the 107 countries in the AIESEC network, grouped in 6 geographical regions. The growth in youth sent to the Latin American and Asian Pacific region is due to interest in visiting Brazil, India and China.

Ea

Exchange Partnerships This year AIESEC Canada had specific partnerships with AIESEC in Brazil, China, India, Turkey, Ukraine, Uganda and Kenya. These AIESEC countries reserved 118 specific internships for our Canadian exchange partcipants, and helped to increase our exchange performance. Students had the opportunity to match to internships in the following fields: Business, Information Technology, Social Issues, & Micro-finance.

Global Internship Program is a great platform for young people to develop their skills and gain experience an in International environment. During my internship I learned that you will have more options in the future if you’re taking advantage of all the opportunities that pop up around you, both from work and from your social life. Building a social network that is spans around the entire globe is something amazing that you will benefit from for the rest of your life.

“We have hired a number of interns

15

Most of the organizations taping into our global network of interns do not have a preference for hiring from any specific part of the world. That being said, the best fits have been indentified this year with youth coming from Western Europe and North America.

through AIESEC and every one has been an asset to our teams. These are young, energetic, intelligent individuals who come to us with an excellent work ethic and already developed skills. In all situations they integrated with our teams and demonstrated their value quickly. We are hopeful that their experiences with us have been as rewarding as our experiences with them! Our interactions with the AIESEC organization have been equally beneficial. The individuals in this organization are professional and very helpful to both the interns and their employers.
