GENERAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS AIESEC? Present in 114 countries and territories with over 30,000 members, AIESEC is the world's largest youth-run organization. Focused on providing a platform for youth leadership development, since 1958 AIESEC has offered young people the opportunity to be global citizens, change the world and garner the experience and skills that matter today. Youth involved in AIESEC have gained skills and competencies through challenging leadership experiences, international internships, and interaction with an extensive global network.

WHAT IS Y2B? Since 2010, The Canada Youth to Business Forum has brought businesses, organizations, government and students together to engage in a unique dialogue on relevant topics to both Canadian businesses and student communities. The Forum aims to bridge the gap between youth and business, driving Canada forward by exploring different perspectives, sharing ideas, and building a better future together. With the theme of the 2022 Y2B Forum being “We Are Generation Z,” we explored how Generation Z could excel in the future of work.

THE FORUM The theme We are Generation Z aims to create conversations between the youth and stakeholders that attend the Youth to Business Forum. It is an opportunity to bring out the youth's perspective and voice to companies attending the conference. With so much happening today, from climate action, racism, social injustice, truth and reconciliation, technological advancements, COVID-19, and so much more, we want to create a platform for youth to share their perspectives as the next generation of the workforce.

Average Delegate Rating for the RBC Keynote

9.8/10 "Learning about my generation's capabilities to lead the future of work was incredible. We can create outstanding new innovations for teams in the current workforce. It is by realizing that we should not be afraid to speak up and share our thoughts because we are the ones that can bring fresh new ideas to the table. So we should be comfortable and confident knowing that we can change the future!" - Sean Pham, York University

KEY EVENTS NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS PANEL (VIDEO LINK)

# of Hopin viewers: 87 # of Satellite viewers: 54

"The panel was fascinating to listen to and hear the thoughts and opinions of the great resignation from all different perspectives. It was great to gain insight into how companies and professionals are showing interest in giving support in implementing programs to nurture the next generation of leaders. The panel also highlighted to us that these are very relevant and important conversations to be having, especially since Gen Z is the next generation that will truly be able to impact the workplace and the world. The biggest thing we took away from the panel is that there is a huge difference between leadership and management. We find this very applicable within our roles, especially in AIESEC." - Calgary Satellite

CULTIVATING SELF-CARE (VIDEO LINK)

The panel reinforced some notions that I had. It reassured me about not being alone, understanding how to take care of myself, and understanding that to help others, you first have to help yourself. Finally, although reflecting on the future is essential, it's just as important to reflect on the present and past.

Quotes from Participants I met Brittany from Nestlé and learned a lot about Nestlé as a company and the reasoning behind last year's case comp with Perrier. I also learned how the case competition helped Nestlé, and I shared my experience with the case competition. I also enjoyed talking about how our experiences were on different sides of the process as at the time, she worked in Nestlé management, which owns Perrier, and I was working at a grocery store at the time, and we got to compare our point of views from opposite ends. I really enjoyed the tips and the stories that Scott shared regarding leadership. I thought the Learning with Leaders space was truly unique, as I had an opportunity to have more meaningful discussions with a mentor-like figure.

Youth Output What does an ideal workplace look like for you?

Delegates' Responses: “We love a fun, exciting and engaging workplace [where] the community is strong and we can all smile, laugh and be aware.” - Calgary satellite

Youth Output How can we make mental health an easier topic to talk about in the workplace, primarily with youth? “Setting up the environment where we can all be honest with each other. It can be a long and continuous process. Sometimes we ask “How are you doing?” and the normal response is “I’m good, how are you?”. Just set up the expectation that you can be honest and say how you’re actually doing. Just little things like that to make the workplace more familiar and open where we can talk about things like our mental health.” - Juwan, Calgary satellite “Anonymous survey to be more comfortable about how you feel, which HR and do analytics. Sometimes it is just easier when it is anonymous.” - Sarah, Montreal satellite

In what ways can companies do to identify leaders besides just associating with performance? “Our group was talking about giving back to the community. One of the examples that Odette was talking about was athletes who feature themselves in commercials to support charities or do fundraising activities. Something I talked about was empathy, and an example I had was DoorDash. They had [those in the] corporate office do the driving for DoorDash once a month as a requirement for their job so they could put themselves in the shoes of the drivers [instead of] enforcing policies without thinking about them” - Mark “We can do a “Employee of the month”, but it is not chosen by the upper end, the corporate, but established by the people like us. For example, if Anita was really nice to all of us, we wouldn’t care about her performance, but we would care about how she made us feel, so I would be more inclined to vote for Anita.” - Calgary satellite

Youth Output What motivates you to take on leadership roles? “Sense of community, seeing everybody trying their best makes you want to do more, get involved and do your best too.” - Montreal satellite “[My motivation] was relationships and how I built relationships. I [was] driven to take that leadership position because I cared about the person that I was friends with, so I wanted to support him with what he was doing. We talked about how people can encourage and motivate you to be the best version of yourself and try different things, and the lead position can encourage you to learn more and have more skill development. If you're striving for change, you can go for it and do the change yourself.” - Iman

"It is relative to who you are as a youth. Many youths have plenty of opportunities, such as everyone at the Youth to Business Forum. In AIESEC, we have tremendous opportunities to learn and develop our leadership, but plenty of youth in the world don't have these opportunities to be set up for success. I think there is lots of room for improvement, and as long as we're cognizant of that, then we're taking a step in the right direction." - Ihsan (Slightly Agree) "I think there are certain demographics of youth who aren't set up for success. For example, if they are born from a lower-income area or if they don't have access to things that other privileged youth have access to." - Jodie (Disagree)

Youth Output

Do you agree? "I believe youth are strongly set up for success in the work field." (continued) “I think we’re doing an excellent job at developing soft skills. You develop many soft skills if you join student clubs like AIESEC. But when it comes to a workplace, there are also practical skills. For example, when I finished my Math degree, I didn’t know any computer programming skills. In university, they teach you lots of theories, not the practical side, and employers look for that. So in terms of soft skills, I’d say youth are set up for success, but in terms of the practical side, it is helpful to have particular work experiences.” - Odette (Neutral) “I think about the resources we have right now and the skills we have built. We need a certain awareness, and we’re seeing a better future towards being a better person, not in the workforce but for ourselves. I think we can make it happen. We have created solutions. We have used design planning; we have brainstormed. We are aware of things that are needed to be said. So yeah, I think it is possible” - Harshit (Strongly Agree)
