It is generally believed that the earliest inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago originated from Indonesia or Burma. Overfull groups such as the Buddhist Sriwijaya empire and the Hindu Mataram kingdom appeared in Java and Sumatra towards the end of the 7 th century. The last important kingdom to remain Hindu was the Majapahit, which was founded in the 13th century. The subsequent spread of Islam into the archipelago in the 14th century forced the Majapahit to retreat to Bali in the 15th century. By the 15th century, a strong Moslem empire had developed with its centre at Malaka (Malacca) on the Malay Peninsula. Its influence was shortlived and it fell to the Portuguese in 1511. The Dutch displaced the Portuguese and began making inroads Indonesia. The Dutch East Indonesia Company based in Batavia (Jakarta) dominated the spice trade and took control of Java. The Dutch took control in the early 19 th century and by the early 20th century, the entire archipelago-including Aceh and Bali-was under their control.

Burgeoning nationalism combined with Japanese occupation of the archipelago during WW II served to weaken Dutch resolve and it finally transferred sovereignty to the new Indonesian republic in 1949. Achmed Sukarno, the foremost proponent of sell-rule since the early 1920s, became president. In 1957, after a rudderless period of parliamentary democracy, Sukarno overthrew the parliament, declared martial law, and initiated a more authoritarian style of government, which he dubbed “Guided Democracy”. Sukarno’s usurpation of power drew immediate response: rebellions broke out in Sumatra and Sulawesi and were eventually crushed in 1958. Soekarno’s consolidation of power did little to alleviate Indonesia’s economic woes. His corrosive vanity led to a number of grandiose building projects-little more than chimeras of national rebuilding – which provided sharp contrast to the poverty of his people. Instability reigned for several years as Sukarno launched confrontation against Malaysia, withdrew from the United Nations, and planned to socialize the economy. Events came to a head in 1965 when an attempted coup, allegedly by Communist groups, left several army generals dead and Sukarno’s hold a power threatened. General Suharto, who was responsible for brutally quashing the coup, eventually seized presidential control. In stark contrast to the turbulent Sukarno years, Suharto sought to address Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic problems, forge national unity, promote openness, and curb its worst excesses. However, the contentious invasion and annexation of East Timor in 1975, the 1991 Dili massacre in East Timor, the prevalence of cronyism and nepotism in the economy and persistent human rights abuses proved many of those excesses were still to be reckoned with.

From 10th to 13th Century, the great kingdoms of the period – Kediri, Songosari and Majapahit – have bequeathed a rich heritage of temple art, literature, music and drama. The majapahit Empire arose in 1292. Besides dominating the entire archipelago, its authority also covered the Malay Peninsula and parts of the Philippines. Hindu – Buddhist influences lasted throughout the 14th Century. Moslem Kingdoms rose in Java in the 16th Century and spread throughout the islands. After Moslems conquered the Brantas Valley in 1527, many Hindus fled eastwards, to Blambangan and Bali. There are numerous temple ruins found, dated from the Classical time if Hindu – Buddha period (7-15th Century AD) as well as the historical sites dating from the early days of Islam and the Dutch Colonial times. East Java is well known as the location of Mount Bromo, the desolate volcanic massive offering the most spectacular sunrise in Southeast Asia. The caldera’s 10 km across, with two peaks rising from the sandy crater floor, Bromo is an unforgettable. Now with comfortable hotels a short drive away, Bromo becomes a popular and it is haven up with tourist attractions. However, even a chattering group tour cannot detract from the majesty of a dry – season sunrise over the crater rim.

As a hundred shades of crimson paint the endless sky, the world falls silent save the quiet whistle of the chill dawn breeze over bare rock and sand. Sitting squarely on the Ring of Fire, East Java has several other accessible volcanic peaks. Mount Semeru lies 20 km south of Bromo. Higher and more active than Bromo, Semeru is regarded by the Javanese as the abode of the Gods, the local equivalent of Mount Meru in India. The hike to the Summit and back is a moderately strenuous overnight trek. At the top, the view encompasses most of East Java, Bali and the Indian Ocean Sugarcane and coffee plantations blanketed East Java during the colonial era. Many of these old plantations are still producing some still using colonial era technology and methods. Workers plant and harvest cane with only hand tools. Tiny, steam-driven locomotives chug alongside back roads, pulling equally scaled-down freight cars piled with cut sugar cane to century-old refineries. A few plantations accept overnight guests, offering clean, comfortable cottages, early morning tours through the crop lands and enormous country breakfasts.

With an extent of about 48.000 square km including Madura Island, East Java occupies a little more than one third of Java’s total extent. With a population of almost 33.000.000 inhabitants to be the most populated area in Indonesia. To the east, across the narrow strait of Bali lies the island of Bali, to the West Province of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, to the North is Java Sea and the South is the Indian Ocean. The province lies between 7 12’ and 8 48’ South Latitude and stretches from 110 52’ to 114 42’ east longitude. Two third of the area is mountainous and hilly with slopes with an approximately 48 mountains with the highest peak of Mount Semeru as the highest in Java. Two wide rivers traverse East Java, the 314 kmlong Brantas, and the Bengawan Solo of about 540 km. Malang, city in southern Indonesia, is the second biggest city in East Java after Surabaya. Malang is located between two massive groups of mountains with Semeru, the higest mountain on Java, and the national park Bromo-Tengger to the east. The climate up here is relatively cool. Culture and Art Ethnic and the culture owned by Malang, have an effect of existing traditional art. One of the famous traditional arts is Tari Topeng (Mask Dance), but nowadays is progressively eroded by modern art. This art style an appearance as the Middle Javanese art style meet East-South Java and the art of Blambangan style.

Language Dialectal Javanese of Madura language and Easting Java is Malang society colloquial. The young peoples always speak typical dialect of Malang , called "Boso walikan" that is the way of word uttering inversedly, the example : like Malang become Ngalam. Language style in Malang is stiff, un-polite as Java language generally. That is show Malang society attitude are coherent, and emphatic.

New Comers Mostly new comers are merchant, worker and student that do not remain and in certain of time back to their hometown. Most of merchants and workers come from around of Malang. LANDMARKS IN MALANG Malang is noted for its colonial architecture, though in fact several other Javanese cities are better endowed with Dutch buildings, there are: BALAI KOTA (Town Hall) Balai Kota on Tugu Circle is a sprawling Dutch administrative building, and nearby are some former old mansions, such as Splendid Inn and the WISMA IKIP next door on Jalan Majapahit JALAN BESAR IJEN Jalan Besar Ijen is Malang’s millionaire’s row. Most of the large houses date from the colonial era, but many have been substantially renovated, losing architectural detail in process. HOTEL PELANGI Hotel Pelangi is the good example of art-deco colonial architecture, and it’s tiled restaurant (Melati Restaurant) with scenes of old Holland. For a drink or a snack, the Melati Restaurant in the Hotel Pelangi is even more architecturally impressive than the Toko Oen. This cavernous colonial relic has towering pressed metal ceilings, and painted tiles around the walls feature picture postcard scenes from Holland. While guaranteed to make any Dutchman homesick, the Indonesian and Western food is only average. This Hotel is besides Post Office (in front of alun-alun / Town square). TOKO OEN For reliving colonial dreams, nothing beats the Toko Oen restaurant. Most of tourist from other country step for a moment and eating its menus. Dessert (Ice cream and cake) is the most delicious. Toko Oen, opposite the Sarinah department store, is an anachronism from colonial days, with tea tables and comfortable basket chairs. It has Indonesian, Chinese and Western food, and also delicious homemade ice cream. This is one of the most relaxing places for meal. It's open from 8.30 am to 9 pm everyday except Monday ARMY MUSEUM (BRAWIJAYA MUSEUM) The modern Army museum is devoted to Malangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brawijaya Division. Army museum in the west of town on Jalan Besar Ijen. KATREDAL ANCIENT CURCH (Katredal Kuno) This Church is the Old Dutch reform church, near The Toko Oen. So after you step in a moment in Toko Oen, you can go over to the church. This church is very big and wide, every Saturday and Sunday very lively in this church, since Christians always pray here, moreover in Christmas Day.

TRADITIONAL MARKETS The huge central market, the Pasar Besar, is always worth a browse. The flower market, Pasar Bunga, has a pleasant aspect down by the river, and it is the place to stroll in the morning. At the same time, you can also take in the nearby Pasar Senggol, once Malang’s thriving night market, now a bird market. Life in Malang revolves around the alun alun (Town Square) and the busy streets of Agus Salim and Pasar Besar near the central market. Here are the main shopping plazas, restaurants, cinemas, and bookstores. The alun alun/ Town Square in particular is a very popular is in the evenings, when families and students promenade, buskers perform before riveted crowds and long queues from outside the cinemas. North-west of the square along Jalan Basuki Rachmad you will find banks, the telephone office and restaurants.

HEALTH REGULATION Valid vaccination certificates of small-fox, cholera and yellow fever area required from those coming from infected areas. Considering that Indonesia is tropical resort, visitors should be aware of getting sunburn, so it is advisable to wear a hat as protection from the fierceness of midday sun.

CUSTOMS Customs regulations allow, on entry, a maximum of two litters of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 100 grams tobacco and a reasonable amount of perfume. Photographic, video and movie equipments, radio, typewriter and car must be declared to custom upon entry and must be reexported. Narcotics, arms and ammunitions, TV sets and Chinese medicines are items prohibited while fresh fruit; plans and animals must have quarantine perm. There is no restriction on import or export of foreign currencies, however, it is prohibited to import or export Indonesian currency exceeding Rp 50.000,00.  OFFICE HOURS Government offices are open Monday to Friday from 7.00 AM till 3.00 PM. Businesses have various office hours, but 8.00 AM – 4.00 PM. is a safe bet on weeekdays. Banks are generally open 8 AM – 4 PM, with a half on Saturday, through their foreign exchange counters close in the early afternoon.

Socio Cultural Visa This visa is issued by the Indonesian Embassy to applicants who are going to Indonesia for a social/cultural visit, such as visiting relatives/friends; social organizations; exchange visits between educational institutions; undertaking research and attending training program in Indonesia. This visa is Single Entry with Maximum length of stay 60 days. Extensions can be applied for and obtained in Indonesia from the Immigration Authorities. Visa extension is granted for 30 days each. You can extend your social cultural visa up to 4 times for a total maximum stay of 180 days. The two first extensions will be granted by your Immigration office, while the two last will require a prior approval from the District office before issuance by the Immigration Office. Visa will only be issued by the Embassy after receiving the authorization direct from the Immigration office in Indonesia. Visa is issued within five to six working days from receipt of application provided all documents are in order. Be careful with this VISA, if you are late to extend this VISA, the local immigration will charge IDR 200.000 per day. Cost of this visa is USD 45 and for the extension is IDR 250.000 Required documents which should be submitted are as follows: 1. Passport (with a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of entry into Indonesia) 2. One completed visa application form 3. One coloured passport size photograph. 4. Evidence that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover the cost of applicant's intended stay in Indonesia (Bank Statement dated less than a month with a minimum balance of £1,000.- or traveler's cheque). 5. Evidence of obligation in the applicant's country of permanent residence (e.g. a letter from employer/ college/ school, certifying the applicant's intention to return after the visit to Indonesia). 6. Written approval from the Immigration Office in Indonesia should the duration of visit is to exceed 60 days. 7. A letter of invitation from the applicant's family/relatives/friends/social organizations in Indonesia, and copy of their passport (main details only) or ID  we will provide you with this 8. Evidence of sufficient funds or a third party letter guaranteeing to support the applicant financially during his/her stay, together with documentary evidence of ability to do so.  we will provide you with this (but sometimes this is not needed)

Limited Stay Visa (VITAS) VITAS enables the incoming intern to stay in Indonesia within 6 – 24 months. However this VISA arrangement needs a long time and procedures. The time required to issue the visa at least 2 months.
