DISCOVER LOWER SILESIA @ Wroclaw, Poland

Discover Lower Silesia was a 6-weeks long, Education based project in which I, and the other Exchange Participants (EPs), were required to conduct cultural lessons in the small villages around Wrocław, Lower Silesia.

!

Each week, I stayed with a different host family and had the opportunity to truly integrate with the locals when I witnessed a Polish presidential election, tasted unique Polish cuisine and learnt the challenging native language. During the weekdays, I conducted cultural classes 3 to 4 hours a day in primary, secondary and high schools. The interactions with the teachers and students gave me a deeper insight on how people from various cultural background collaborate. It was the first time I became a minority in the society, yet surprisingly, I was well-liked among the locals, as they were intrigued to know more about me and my Asian roots. It was my honour to be granted personal conversations with mayors from Oleśnica and Strzelin, and my team was also featured on the local news. I felt highly valued and could see how I impacted the local stakeholders of Lower Silesia!

!

Today, I am more culturally aware and will no longer take my Asian identity for granted. It may be hard to believe, but there are actually many people in this world who have yet to meet an Asian! This empowers me to step up and interact with a variety of foreigners, share my culture and personal stories to better understand the way we live.

GLOBAL PASSPORT @ Hanoi, Vietnam

The Global Passport project was a 6-weeks long, Education based project that happens yearly at various local chapters in Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, etc.). As part of this education based project, I, and the other Exchange Participants (EPs), had to come up with lesson plans, cultural exchange related events, as well as interactive sessions for the students to help them with their communication skills. We had planned lessons which covered a myriad of topics - such as public speaking and debates to help better the students’ oral skills and give them the opportunity to get over their fear of speaking in front of a crowd.

!

These gave me the chance to work on my team building as well as leadership skills. In addition, this project developed me as a person and allowed me to be more responsible and independent. Over the 6 weeks that I was in Vietnam for the Global Passport project, I had learnt a great deal of things that I would remember for the rest of my life. It was a daunting thought at first to think of spending 6 weeks away from home with a group of unknown people, but by the end of the project, we had all developed a strong bonding within ourselves.

! It was truly a life changing experience! !

HAVE FARM, HAVE FUN @ Taipei, Taiwan

Have Farm, Have Fun was an 8-weeks long, Environment based project in which I, and the other Exchange Participants (EPs), worked for 5 days a week on an organic farm, called See Love Home.

!

Each week, we looked forward to a different and exciting experience. Apart from cultivating and harvesting our delicious crops, we taught primary school children, guided tour groups around the farm and even appeared on a Taiwan television programme! With so many ongoing events, I got the chance to work on my team-building and crisis-management skills. Working hard on the farm also allowed me to truly take a breather from hectic city life, critically evaluate the current situation of organic agriculture and appreciate my natural surroundings (something we city kids do not seem to CARROT all!).

!

Today, I am more aware of my impact on my natural surroundings, and I feel more confident about leading a team and effectively communicating with a large group of people. I had a great time exposing myself to all things new and making lifelong friendships with the EPs from different countries, and (HAY!) I hope that you do too!
