AIGLON 75TH ANNIVERSARY
INTRODUCTION
Introduction When John Corlette founded our school in 1949, he knew that the balanced development of mind, body and spirit would require unique ingredients. A strong and abiding family spirit. Inspirational and outstanding educators. A truly diverse student body. A unique location. And the spirited independence that comes with being a non-profit school. Seventy-five years later, Aiglon continues to grow and thrive. So this is a tribute to life lived on the mountain: our home, our classroom and our way of life.

“ We explored all kinds of skiing. We could go off-piste, look for moguls, go cliff-jumping... I loved it. I think that Aiglonians become quite adventurous – we love to explore and conquer off-piste ski runs. It’s part of the school spirit. Looking back, Aiglon taught us how to enjoy and respect nature.”

“ I think the best thing is that feeling you get. When you’re going so fast and you’re suddenly so free and powerful.”

“ You see people at their best, and at their very worst. I’ve made mistakes, shouted at people, been shouted at and had some pretty intense arguments and really bad fall-outs. But other times I’ve been sitting in a hut on the side of a mountain with the same people and we’ve laughed until our sides ached. There is nothing like an expedition to bring you together.”

“ When I look back at the Aiglon philosophy, I feel what I’ve taken most from it is that one’s life has to be balanced – in mind, body and spirit – for it to be fulfilling. So you should stay in shape, ensure you are informed about the world around you, and keep challenging yourself intellectually.”

“ We were complaining most of the time: how hot it was, teachers, homework assignments, who’s been mean to you – things kids still complain about. Nothing changes! And then, when you come back, you’re amazed at how beautiful it is.”

CREDITS
The Aiglon Archives All the images in this book have been drawn from our school archives, which many of you have so generously contributed to over the years. This year, to mark our 75th Anniversary, our Archive Manager Natasha Storey has organised and digitised what was previously a dusty storeroom filled with boxes. In the process, we have discovered so many incredible images – but the majority lack any detail. We don’t know who is in the photograph or even when or where they might have been taken. So if you spot your photo in this book, or can help us identify your fellow Aiglonians, please do email us at archives@aiglon.ch. We are just at the beginning of this project and look forward to enriching the archives further over time. All the quotations in this book are drawn from the Aiglon Magazine. You can read past editions online at aiglon.ch/community/magazine. 144
Credits Creating this book would not have been possible without the unflinching support, advice and photographs of Patrick Roberts (Staff, 1965-1987), Erik Friedl (Alpina, 1969), Tony Hyde (Staff, 1970-2009) and James (Jim) Mitchell (Delaware, 1975). Our heartfelt thanks to you all. We are grateful to professional photographers Lee A Johnson (cover) and Joe McGorty, and to Aiglon’s own Seth Barker, for their images. We would also like to thank the many Aiglonians who, over seven decades, have deposited their images in the archives or shared them with the alumni team. Finally, this book was created for Aiglon College in partnership with YBM, ybm.co.uk. © Aiglon College, 2023.
