EDITORIAL The indian furniture market is undergoing a major transporation these days. With the entry of multinational furniture giants like Ikea of Sweden are likely to end up increasing the organised market of the largely unorganised furnitre segment, which is currently pegged at Rs. 1.5 lakh crore in terms of size. One of the early entreants in the organised furniture market, Pepperfry has seen a double gorwth rate this as compared to last year. The company feels that reduction in GST on branded furniture has led to this growth. The company is now focusing on increasing its offline footprint and expanding the bespoke service division. The brand currently gets 70% of all furniture related services made in India. Swedish giant Ikea launched its operations in India this August by opening its first retail outlet in Hyderabad. It is entirely possible to mistake the store for a mall because there is 400,000 sq. ft. of shopping to get by. K.Vikram Rastogi
A million visitors have turned up so far at the IKEA showroom and the company is soon going to open more stores in other cities. It is worked for years for its debut in India with an investment of roughly Rs 1,000 crore each on a big store. With 423 stores worldwide and sales of euro 38 billion annually, IKEA has committed about Rs 12,800 crore in India. The Mumbai an store will open next summer and Bangalore by 2020. IKEA is casting its net for 200 million people in three years. Affordability is the other catchword for IKEA. India a $200 million market opportunity for ergonomic office furniture. Premium office furniture major Steelcase Inc. is looking to tap a $200 million market opportunity in India for its ergonomically-designed office furniture line. Since its entry into the India market in 2006, the $ 3.1-billion US-based company has witnessed high double-digit revenue growth rate, driven by demand from global in-house centres (GICs) of large multinational corporations and leading domestic firms. The company set up a factory in Pune in 2013 to serve Indian customers better. It is investing in the factory by adding new space, new machinery and setting up warehousing capabilities. During the company’s first phase of growth in the country, products were imported from Malaysia because multinationals in India had tax privileges that allowed them import dutyfree products specifically from Malaysia. While the Pune factory has the capacity to produce between 50,000 - 70,000 workstations or seats per annum, it still caters to only 50% of the demand in India. Steelcase has opened Work Life Centres or experience studios spanning 60007000 sq ft in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and more recently, Hyderabad. K.Vikram Rastogi

CEVISAMA EXPECTS TO ATTRACT 100,000 PROFESSIONALS TO ITS BEST EDITION Cevisama, the International Fair for Ceramic Tiles, Bathroom Furnishing and Natural Stone that takes place annually in Valencia (Spain), is putting the finishing touches to the preparations for what will probably be its best edition of the last ten years. The fair has become firmly established as the leading sales platform for Spain’s ceramic tile industry, which is now Europe’s most prolific producer of floor and wall tiles. What is more, demand in Spain has taken off again, making the country a more attractive market. No surprise, then, that the organisers have set the bar high for this upcoming edition, which runs from 28th January to 1st February at Feria Valencia and is expected to welcome 100,000 professionals from all over the world.
groups and specifiers from the USA, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium and Russia have already confirmed that they will be visiting and the organisers are fully expecting this year’s fair to deliver even better results than last year, when 90,000 visitors attended including 17,000 from outside Spain and 838 brands were on show.
The show’s offering is being set out over ten halls, one of which is being dedicated to products and materials created specifically for architectural and interior design projects. There is a reason for this: ceramic is gaining traction in the Contract sector, with its aesthetic and technical properties having made it a decorative as well as a construction material. Hand in hand with the industry, Cevisama is aiming to further boost its status as a mustattend event for property developers, designers, interior designers and architects and, of course, manufacturers and distributors. The exhibitors that the organisers of the fair have recruited for the new hall – the venue’s hall 6 – include major names in the ceramic tile sector such as Neolith, Natucer and Laminam and Fiora, Hidrobox and Ramón Soler from the bathroom furnishings sector. The hall is being specially designed to suit its new purpose, with modern networking spaces, places to go for a coffee, snack or meal and wifi zones. Cevisama’s cultural content this year includes the Architecture and Design Forum, with top-level speakers including, amongst others, Pritzker Prize winning Swiss architect Jacques Herzog, who will talk about his Tate Modern project in London, and architects Nieto Sobejano, who will give an insight into their latest major commission, the Arvo Pärt Center in Laulasmaa. These are just a few of the features set to define this next edition of Spain’s leading industrial fair. The main retail 12 | Architecture & Interiors International Panorama

CMC INTRODUCES MEGA WHITE – FLEXIBLE PORCELAIN TILES FOR CURVED BUILDING FACADES Classic Marble Company (CMC) has launched its latest flexible porcelain tile product – Mega White under its brand, Kalesinterflex. Mega White is a matte finished, pearl white product available in thicknesses of 3mm and 5mm, and is 1000 x 3000 mm in size. Unlike ordinary tiles, Kalesinterflex has a 5.5m range of flex and this flexibility allows the tile to cover concave and convex surfaces. The 3mm thickness makes the tiles lighter in weight and easy to handle, making them an ideal wall clad and façade material for most buildings, especially for tall structures. Manufactured using the best quality raw material and unique technology, the product is highly resistant to fire, water and dust and hence is suitable for façade applications in tropical climates like India. Despite being thin, the tile is hard, durable and rates 7 on Mohs scale of hardness. Its smooth surface does not retain dirt and is virtually maintenance free. Another distinguishing aspect of this product is that it has been created using environment friendly technology and is GREEN certified. Mega White offers a new perspective to contemporary architecture and construction. Matte finish products are trending in façade and wall clad applications as the finish easily syncs with most design and décor, and offers an understated, natural look. 14 | Architecture & Interiors International Panorama

MAISON&OBJET JANUARY 2019
DRIVING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES The MAISON&OBJET exhibition welcomed 84,236 visitors, including 46,356 French and 37,880 international visitors from 160 countries. This figure is slightly lower than the record of January 2018. Despite the social unrest in France in recent weeks, the quality of attendance remained significant and was welcomed by exhibitors. 2910 brands presented their latest creations - 603 were present for the first time. According to exhibitors, this fair was particularly successful in terms of business prospects and contracts generated. They included 62% of foreign brands from 65 countries. Finally, positive feedback from the public lent further weight to our decision to divide the halls into sectors - a step first taken last September and perfected in January. Dividing the fair into two hubs, Maison and Objet, also made it easier to understand and more intuitive for visitors. MAISON&OBJET confirmed its continuing appeal, its ability to bring together a global community of decoration, design and lifestyle professionals, and its business impact. Twice a year, the fair offers market players an insight into trends in the sector and helps boost their growth. Launched in 2016, Its digital platform MOM (MAISON&OBJET and MORE), takes over all year long and continue to inspire and connect industry professionals through its regular weekly newsletter. The MAISON& OBJET social networks have also broken a new record by crossing the threshold of 600,000 followers on Instagram and 500,000 followers on Facebook.

Highlights of this year’s fair Each MAISON&OBJET fair explores a key trend, in partnership with international innovation and creation consulting firm NellyRodi. Excuse my French! highlighted the French touch - the "je ne sais quoi" whose influence is once again being felt across the world. The immersive experience offered in the Trend Forum set the scene for the unmistakably French art of cultivating paradoxes and twisting classics. It confirmed the creative excitement generated by French-made brands and a whole new generation of creators. Excuse my French! is also the subject of an in-depth analysis in Trend Mook magazine. The Rising Talent Awards put China in the spotlight. True to its vocation as a talent detector, the fair shed light on emerging talent in a key country for contemporary creation: China. The six designers who won the Rising Talent Awards, organised in collaboration with DesignChain, were invited to exhibit their creations at the fair. This springboard provided them with the opportunity to work on new joint ventures with brands, particularly since the exhibition is now presented in the atrium of the Galeries Lafayette Homme department store from 25 January to 19 February 2019. Sebastian Herkner, German designer voted Designer of the Year, presented, in a dedicated space, his main achievements and his signature, multiculturally inspired style that gives primacy to colour and combines craftsmanship and innovation. The What's new? spaces showcased more than 500 brands and nearly 1,500 new products from all over the world spotted at the fair by top trend-setters Elizabeth Leriche, François Bernard and François Delclaux.

Bottle of spices by Nendo VALERIE_OBJECTS Although Nendo is known to work on four hundred projects at the same time, this is actually his very first pepper and salt shaker. As always the Japanese designer aimed to add a humorous twist to the design and with this object it is no different. The pepper and salt shakers are actually round glass bottles with a ribbed bottom placed on a glass holder. The intention is to pick up the bottle, pour some spice into the holder, grind it with the ribbed bottom of the bottle and then pour the squashed pepper or salt on your meal. Wind Tables MATIÈRE GRISE The WIND collection is a tribute to the material’s strength. Designed by Victoria Wilmotte, a leading figure of the new generation of French designers, this first collection with Matière Grise makes use of the art of folding, endowing volume to steel in a technical and innovative way, reminiscent of paper origami. A collection composed of three geometric low nesting tables, whose tabletops are crimped accordion-style on one end—a study in both strength and whimsy. Compact and contemporary table sculptures that are both highly practical and incredibly beautiful.

CONSTRUCTION
TECHNOLOGY IS DISRUPTING THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR Technology has disrupted almost every facet of the real estate business today. However, the creation of the core product is and will remain the most important aspect of this business, and advanced technologies are certainly playing a major role there. By adopting innovative technologies like automation in construction, innovative designs, sustainability, use of prefabricated material and online marketing, developers can value-engineer their product.
CONSTRUCTION
Among the many new technologies already adopted by the construction sector, 3D printing is anticipated to change the way real estate is built over the next decade. Though still very nascent, 3D printing can potentially replace a substantial amount of construction across major segments, including residential, commercial or even retail. This will be a massive paradigm shift in real estate development. Given the rapid rate at which technology is reimaging everything in
CONSTRUCTION
modern life, it would perhaps be rash to tag 3D printing in construction as ‘hopelessly futuristic’. It will happen sooner than we may expect. While 3D printing in the construction sector is yet to take a kickstart in India, an entire two story house was 3D printed from concrete in Beijing in just 45 days – from start to finish.
Of course, there are considerable costs involved in this technology. 3D printing machines usable in the construction sector can cost as much as $2 million. In other words, 3D printing technology in the construction sector can change the way real estate functions but currently, it is largely limited to printing small buildings. For large-size buildings including multi-storey offices or large malls, machines of considerably higher capacities would be needed. An existing construction technology which is fast gaining ground is Building Information Modelling (BIM) software that allows designers to produce 3D mock-ups of planned structures alongwith critical information about costs and construction timelines. Many small and medium organisations are shying away from the adoption of BIM technology, as it involves high implementation fees and training costs, including the cost of hiring experts, training the existing workforce, apart from the investment in technology itself. Since many of India’s

CONSTRUCTION developers simply don’t have budgets to meet these additional expenditures, they prefer to follow traditional methods. Construction companies worldwide, and also in India, have started using Virtual / Augmented Reality technology to enhance construction worker safety training. VR allows workers and work managers to visualise the more serious construction site hazards and prepare for them adequately. Although expensive, the use of drones is gaining popularity for managing and inspecting sites. Drones allow developers to map a site and create 2D as well as 3D images. Most of the advanced drones are a coordinatebase system which helps achieve absolute accuracy in measurements. All this is important if we consider that while technology can and is replacing humans in various ways and that an entirely new alternate online universe has now opened up, humans themselves will always require constructed buildings to live and work in. There is no immediate foreseeable way of catering to all the physical needs of mankind purely by means of technology. January - March 2019

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
USING DGP GROWTH AS A PROXY TO GAUGE CONSTRUCTION SPENDING IN AFRICA
North Africa’s economic outlook has improved, thanks to rebounding oil prices and higher produc" on quotas under the revised Vienna Alliance agreement. OPEC and nonOPEC members will benefit from the higher produc" on quotas and the higher oil prices as market concerns over Iranian and Venezuelan produc" on con" nue. Our baseline forecast assumes the price of Brent will increase to an average of $74 per barrel for 2018 and $80 per barrel in 2019. There remains much uncertainty regarding the oil market, including Libya’s ability to sustain the recovery in its oil output. While conflict in Libya con" nues to jeopardise the regional growth outlook, Libya’s economy is es" mated to have 26 | Architecture & Interiors International Panorama
emerged from recession in 2017, with the reopening of key oil terminals and recovering oil produc" on and exports suppor" ng a rebound in growth, albeit a very low base. The Libyan economy has contracted in five of the last six years, with double-digit growth con" nuing in 2018 – although not as high as in 2017. Egypt’s economic prospects have improved with is $12 billion IMF deal, which along with other external funding and reforms has helped alleviate foreign exchange shortage. We expect GDP growth to be 5.5% in fiscal year 2018-19, and average 5% through 2022, with ac" vity strengthening as natural gas produc" on from the supergiant Zohr field comes online. IHS Markit expects the Algerian economy to grow at an average annual rate of around 3.1% from 2020 to 2024. The construc" on sector will make a significant contribu" on to growth, as construc" on of new housing accelerates. There are also various oil and gas infrastructure developments, including several new refineries, as well as plans for the country’s third petrochemicals plant.
automo" ve and aeronau" cs industries will remain a key driver of manufacturing export growth. The tourism industry has been strong in 2018, with arrivals up 10% year-on-year through the first half. Meanwhile, industrial exports are expected to expand robustly, supported by the free trade agreement with the USA, an advanced status rela" onship with the European Union.
Plans to expand the country’s cement produc" on capacity are in line with construc" on sector developments. The government’s 49/51 rule that prohibits foreign investment from having a majority stake will con" nue to be a major obstacle for a& rac" ng investors. Algeria’s economy and government finance will remain reliant upon the hydrocarbon sector.
Tunisia’s economic situa" on has improved, although growth will remain unsteady. Real GDP growth reached 1.9% in 2017 and should accelerate further to 2.6% in 2018, which remains below poten" al. Tunisian structural reforms under the IMF lending programme could lay the founda" ons for greater investment.
In Morocco, the economy should expand for the 20th consecu" ve year in 2018, but we expect growth to ease to 3.2% as the agricultural sector ekes out only marginal growth before a rebound to 4% in 2019. Rapid expansion of the January - March 2019

FAIRS The digital construction site: more than just entertainment High added value for daily business Location-independent and usable in compact spaces Exclusive: digital construction site at bauma 2019 completely new possibili" es for planning and development, but also basic/further training or sales. “Anyone wan" ng to train their appren" ces under realis" c condi" ons—in machine maintenance, for example—or looking to explain the inner workings of a crane to the customer, no longer has to even leave the site,” explains Kästner.
Digital innova" ons are increasingly shaping our everyday lives—including in the construc" on machinery industry. Thanks to virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), users can now experience construc" on sites virtually and be part of the story in the middle of the ac" on. It is not just an experience with decep" vely real sensa" ons and high entertainment value. VR and AR can be used to present products in the development phase, prototypes, or future scenarios and explain them in a completely new way. This opens up a whole host of new opportuni" es for companies.
Companies such as Doka (formwork experts), Trimble (measuring instruments specialists), GEDA (mechanical engineering company), Bobcat (construc" on machinery manufacturer), and uvex (manufacturer of protec" on and safety products) are already using the virtual offer “made by bauma.” Doka: formwork exper!se in compact spaces “Doka is represented at the Messe München VR Experience as it highlights Doka’s problem-solving exper" se from different perspec" ves and allows it to be experienced. A highrise model embedded in VR shows clearly what
“With our digital construc" on site, we have created a pla% orm that enables exhibitors’ products to be experienced not only at the actual exhibi" on stand but in any loca" on. We offer the virtual exhibi" on space within a VR Experience. For the first " me, companies at bauma 2019 will be able to present themselves completely digitally,” says Mareile Kästner, bauma Exhibi" on Director. It is a virtual experience with high added value for daily business, opening up 40 | Architecture & Interiors International Panorama

extensive know-how is required to make the construc" on process fast, safe, and op" mized. Doka has demonstrated the formwork exper" se required in more than 1,000 highrise projects. Virtual reality allows visitors to understand the complex of issues in the smallest of spaces,” says Go* ried Bühringer, Head of Digital Marke" ng at Doka. uvex: safety first For Tobias Hawelka, Marke" ng Coordinator at uvex, the topic of safety is the focus of the virtual construc" on site. “For the first " me, as part of the VR Experience at bauma 2019, the uvex safety group is also giving all visitors the opportunity to experience selected products in step with the digital transforma" on. By entering a construc" on site virtually with the safety equipment that would also be required in real life, the visitor is given a unique experience and a deep insight into this exci" ng virtual world.”
GEDA: elevators experienced in lifelike environment “As an innova" ve mechanical engineering company, we see promising opportuni" es for our organiza" on in the possibili" es offered by digitaliza" on. For example, topics such as virtual reality enable us to also present our construc" on hoists and industrial elevators to interna" onal customers in a lifelike environment. We look forward to being involved in the VR Experience at bauma 2019,” says Jürgen Deffner, Head of Marke" ng at GEDA. With the bauma VR Experience, it is not simply about just incorpora" ng a digital format into the classic trade fair business: “It definitely gets emo" onal! It will be an unforge+ able experience, especially when the surface of the earth opens and the elevator takes the visitor to lo, y heights,” says Mareile Kästner, bauma Exhibi" on Director. Visitors and exhibitors can get an accurate impression of this at bauma 2019 in hall B0. A+ endees can consult an up-to-date overview of exhibitors online in the bauma Exhibitor directory. More informa" on about the trade fair is available at www.bauma.de.
Trimble: seamless data movement and visualiza!on Maria Scully, Event Manager at Trimble Civil Engineering and Construc" on highlights the poten" al of VR/AR for Trimble’s business: “We will connect construc" on by offering a suite of integrated solu" ons. Solu" ons that provide seamless data movement and data visualiza" on. SiteVision is an example of this, a new solu" on providing highaccuracy outdoor augmented reality for the construc" on industry. The VR Experience at bauma will not only January - March 2019
