Due to popular demand and with your support we shall make it a bi-annual event. In this Spring-Summer edition you will see lots of new things and some familiar faces. Bags, bags, bags, that’s what BONIA is all about.

Naturally! Indeed, a few years ago, when BONIA opened at KLCC we introduced ‘Natural concept’, closer to nature and more luxurious with a wider range of our limited edition handbags on display. We encourage you to drop by level 2 (unit 206B) next time you go to the Petronas Twin Towers. Or visit us at Changi Airport terminal 3, where we have also introduced this ‘Natural concept’. For those with a more classic taste, we still carry the regular range at the other two terminals.

Another highlight in this issue is our very first BONIA monogram collection that we keep close to our heart. It is coming out this spring with a new look. I won’t say more…

While international couture labels have in the past hired African and Asian models to parade on the catwalk of European fashion capitals, BONIA’s success in the region is refl ected in the new advertising campaign where you will notice a rather different new ambiance, more ‘fusion’ I would say.

A TIME FOR OPULENCE This season, BONIA goes bold with its timepieces for a standout collection.

While a rather discreet accessory, your chosen timepiece says a lot about you. Whether you realise it or not, what you wear on your wrist is actually an extension of yourself – what you appreciate in terms of design, your preference when it comes to appreciating the finer things in life, what sort of trends you are more attuned to; in short, who you are as a person when it comes to style. Looking at BONIA’s latest timepieces for this collection, it is safe to say this: the wearer of a BONIA timepiece is all about boldness, creativity, being an individual and a standout.

Prominent face sizes that create a grandeur impression. This season, there is no doubt that BONIA is going bold, brilliant and beautiful with its collection of exquisite timepieces.

With exquisite finishing in rose gold and luxurious details like diamonds, BONIA’s latest collection of timepieces is anything but ordinary.

“BONIA watches are newly designed with more prominent sizes and creative boldness in stone setting that make the watches stand out with brilliance,” shares MB Lim, Executive Business Director of A.D Time. A business partner of BONIA, A.D Time is responsible for the creative direction and manufacturing of BONIA’s timepieces.

Why the take on boldness? What is the deciding factor in terms of design direction and creativity? Think making an impact. In line with its company philosophy, BONIA wants to create a lasting impression as a fashion house that offers more than just fashion goods. It is all about leaving behind a perception of a fashion house that values quality, excellence and distinction.

The same goes for its timepieces, says Lim. “BONIA watches are often appreciated as collectible works of fashion rather than just timepieces. This has created several different markets for wristwatches that serve as personal adornment or as examples of high achievement. BONIA’s brand name is associated all over the world with watches made of eternal design, and are beautiful but everlasting.”

With so many timepieces out there, some with similar creative direction, it is vital for BONIA to be that distinctive

brand that stands out. In order to do so, Lim says it all boils down to innovative uses of high-tech materials and distinct designs.Adds Lim, “Till today, BONIA watches have offered a variety of wearable, functional art that is inspired by the Italian origins and roots of BONIA as a brand.”

There is no doubt then it won’t be the last we will see BONIA going bold with its timepieces. In fact, Lim hints of a more vivid and spectacular direction for the collections to come. “You will see more higher-end collections that offer mechanical technology,” says Lim. “There will also be more usage of ceramic materials with bolder individualistic designs.

“The thing is a ‘perfect’ watch is not just a precise timetelling machine; a ‘perfect’ watch is a watch that offers comfort and is able to show one’s class and true style,” he adds. “Which is why for me, the most important feature in the design of a watch is the passion that goes into it. The rest will follow.”

THE MAKING OF A HERITAGE

We take a closer look at what goes behind the making of a classic BONIA Monogram piece.

Monogram. The word that is often associated with a brand’s collection of classic pieces. In the case of BONIA, this refers to its range of understated yet elegant monogram collection – bags and accessories made from a signature monogram canvas that is undeniably BONIA. But what really goes behind the making of this classic? What makes a BONIA monogram? It all points to the intricate seven-step process, a meticulous procedure that combines BONIA’s delicate craftsmanship with its attention to detail to produce this sophisticated classic.

CUTTING The monogram canvas is cut into several pieces and shapes that make up the entire bag.

To ensure the monogram canvas aligns flawlessly with BONIA’s logo in full display, the canvas is cut individually, piece by piece, following the layout of the bag design. Here, two sections of the bag are cut – the major sections, which are the main components of the bags, and the secondary sections, which refer to the bag’s details such as the handles.

GLUING For the gluing process, the different parts of the bag are fastened together with a special leather glue. The bag starts to take its form in this process. Here, if lining is required, it is glued to the bag as well.

STITCHING The Italian leather pieces are then stitched together with monogram canvas using a leather-stitching machine to give it that recognisable design that is so popular. This is where the BONIA immaculate craftsmanship steps in, to create an end product that is both exquisite and grand. Even the zipper is being stitched in as well, making this process an arduous task that requires expertise and skill.

SKIVING Some of the cut Italian leather pieces will be overlapped to make the bag. These pieces would need to be suitably skived so that when joined, they appear as one and seamless. A skiving machine is used for this purpose, which feathers down the edges that are to be joined. The cut pieces will need to be thinned down so that they are easier to work on in later steps, especially during stitching.

POLISHING As the edges of the cut Italian leather pieces are rough due to the nature of its leather, a polishing machine is used to smoothen the edges. This gives the finished product an overall flawless look.

COLOURING After the thorough polishing of the Italian leather pieces, now comes the time for the colouring process. This is where a special leather colour treatment is used according to the design of the monogram piece. This is usually done on the polished edges of the cut pieces.

GOING NATURAL We take a closer look behind the inspirations and ideas for BONIA’s Natural Suria KLCC boutique.

WHAT The BONIA Natural Suria KLCC boutique was a refurbishment of an existing outlet with approximately 720 square feet worth of layout space. Its design features mainly natural concepts, keeping in mind the use of natural materials for the interior of the boutique. The boutique opened its doors to shoppers at 28th March 2011.

WHY As one of the leaders in the fashion industry, BONIA is constantly upgrading itself in all aspects, from merchandising to store image.

This is an important corporate exercise to maintain the luxury company as a market leader in the industry.

THE INSPIRATION The BONIA Natural Suria KLCC boutique was designed on natural basis.

Simplicity with natural elements and material finishing such as travertine marble, natural wood veneer, light emperor marble floor and solid timber strip floor finishing were used throughout the boutique. The use of these natural shades serves as a harmony platform to further enhance the merchandise display of BONIA’s luxurious leather goods.

THE DESIGN ESTHETICS A totally clear and transparent shop front with clear tempered glass sliding door was designed so that the boutique’s products are visible, even before or after daily operational hours. This is important to keep the boutique attractive at all times.

A prominent LED signage, which illuminated the words BONIA NATURAL can be found across the boutique façade. This helps to capture the elegant branding of the company, which can be noticed from all angles.

To further enhance and assist on product display focus, a plain and natural timber strips design was used for the boutique’s ceiling with various heights to break the monotonous of an ordinary design. Also, the display shelves are made from clear glass with concealed illumination to enhance the products on display. Various forms for displays are also used – from wall to island units of different heights and shapes. A focus spot lightning is also cleverly designed, showcasing selected merchandise display to create a warm and cozy ambience yet retain the brightness to highlight the display.
