At Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport, private aircraft operations last year at Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre (SHPBASC) increased 15.5 percent and set month-over-month records, according to general manager Carey Matthews. “Both the Asian and international business communities keep flying, despite the daily economic news or drama,” he says. Sales of new aircraft may have dropped, but that’s partly due to healthy changes in buying patterns. Once known for purchasing only freshly made jets, the region’s buyers have discovered value in the aftermarket.

Turnover fueled some of the year’s activity, as new aircraft replaced old; other transactions resulted from austerity and anticorruption initiatives, in addition to owners selling for economic reasons, says Lowe, the Hong Kong aviation services and consultancy’s managing director. In another sign that business aviation is developing a solid foundation for growth, the community is showing “increased interest in a wider range of aircraft,” says Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) chairman Charlie Mularski. “Not only the traditionally

popular super-long-range jets but also midsize and even very light jets are entering the market.” Indeed. In December Wanfeng Aviation Co., a subsidiary of Wanfeng Auto Holding Group, took delivery of a Phenom 100E, Embraer’s entry-level light twinjet, the first in China. The company chose the Phenom “after comprehensive studies of executive jets in the same class,” says Chen Bin, president of the Shoaling, Zhejiang-based auto-parts manufacturer. He cites attributes including “plenty of space, fast speed, and low fuel consumption.” The month before Wanfeng received its Phenom, Jinggong General Aviation (JGA) of Zhejiang ordered 20 of One Aviation’s Eclipse 550 light twinjets, which will be delivered over several years. “The need for aircraft in China is growing rapidly,” says Zhang Ming­ ding, general manager of JGA, China’s exclusive distributor for Eclipse jets, which also provides maintenance and flight training and owns Beijing Badaling Airport Management Co. The Phenom 100E and the Eclipse 550 could help popularize owner-flown operations in the region, says Mularski, noting that both these light jets are approved for single-pilot use and that many

current owners of these models fly the aircraft themselves. Both are six-place jets with service ceilings of 13,000 meters (41,000 feet). The $4.15 million Phenom cruises at 722 kilometers per hour (390 knots), and the $2.995 million Eclipse at 695 kilometers per hour (375 knots). (Prices are U.S. dollars.) Mularski sees a positive signal in the growing diversity of China’s business aviation fleet. “It’s a sign that corporations and aircraft operators are matching the investment and aircraft type to the needs they have for their missions,” he says. eanwhile, some of the growth

M of the preowned market can be attributed to another change in owners’ attitudes and behavior, according to ASG’s Lowe. “Traditionally and culturally, Chinese sellers have refused to grant exclusivity,” he says. “They prefer the shotgun approach of listing the aircraft with as many brokers as possible and in as many markets as possible.” But a qualified broker won’t invest the time and expense required to market and sell an aircraft properly without an exclusive representation arrangement. Aircraft sellers appear to be recognizing this now, and ASG claims to be a big beneficiary of the shift. “Due to our longevity in the China market, [and because we’re] a familiar face and somewhat of a Chinese company ourselves, sellers have more confidence and trust in ASG,” Lowe says. “We are the busiest we have ever been both on the business jet side and on the rotary side.” As Lowe notes, rotorcraft haven’t been left out of the action. In September, Shanghai’s China Minsheng Investment (CMI) established a subsidiary, CM International Financial Leasing (CMIFL), to acquire 100 single-engine Airbus

H125 and H130 helicopters over five years, creating what CMI calls the first China-based rotorcraft leasing group. The H125 holds the record for highest-altitude landing and takeoff—atop Mt. Everest at 8,850 meters (29,035 feet). CMI has also expanded its aviation footprint outside of China over the past year, acquiring ExecuJet Aviation and a stake in Luxaviation, both European aircraft services and management providers. “By acquiring these foreign companies, because this industry is still new in China, we can learn from their management experience,” says CMI vice president Kong Linshan. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) reports that in 2014 (the last year for which data is available) 538 civil helicopters were registered in the country, a 40 percent increase over the previous year’s 385. Concurrently, the number of operators rose from 55

to 82, a 49 percent increase, while the number of helicopter pilots jumped 22 percent, to 1,519. No figures on maintenance providers have been released, but the number has grown by at least one. Last December Bell Helicopter named Chongqing General Aviation (CQGA) in Chongqing province as an authorized customer-service facility. Also an established operator, CQGA late last year received China’s first certified Bell 412s, a twin-engine utility helicopter, for use in firefighting. f you’re flying to or within China in a foreign-registered aircraft, you’ll be glad to know that regulatory changes have made travel easier. In December CAAC announced that business aircraft flights to airports of entry (AOE) would no longer need sponsor letters, nor would flights to multiple locations (five maximum) within China if all are AOEs, or for technical stops.

If your itinerary includes Hong Kong—or would if you weren’t concerned about the lack of adequate parking for business jets at HKG—you can relax a bit. Late last year AsBAA lobbied HKG Airport, Zhuhai Airport, and the Zhuhai municipal government, and ­petitioned Hong Kong’s chief executive to activate Zhuhai as a reliever airport for the city. In January the authorities approved temporary entry and exit of foreign-registered business jets from Zhuhai. n October 2014, Gulfstream Aerospace formally launched two large-cabin jets designed to replace its G450 and G550 models: the G500 and the G600. The top speed for both aircraft is M 0.925, the same as for Gulfstream’s G650ER. With the introduction of the G500 and G600, all of the company’s large-cabin models will pay homage to the need for speed. Possible nonstop city pairs for the G500 include Istanbul to Cape Town, South Africa; Los Angeles to London; and San Francisco to Tokyo. The aircraft has a range of 9,260 km (5,000 nm) at M 0.85 and 7,038 kilometers (3,800 nm) at M 0.90. The G600 has a range of 11,482 k (6,200 nm) at M 0.85 and 8,890 km (4,800 nm at M 0.90. The G500 made its first flight in May of last year. The manufacturer recently added two flighttest G500s to the fleet, and it has two more under construction. The company anticipates that it will obtain G500 type certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency in 2017 and begin deliveries in 2018. It expects to receive certification for the G600 in 2019. Gulfstream has set initial prices at $43.5 million for the G500 and $54.5 million for the G600 (prices are U.S. dollars). The Savannah, Georgia, production line that the company built for these aircraft promises to allow for more efficiencies than the flagship G650 offers; that aircraft already uses 80 percent fewer fasteners and 50 percent fewer parts than the legacy G450/G550. The G500 and G600 will incorporate the latest advances in aerodynamics with a new high-speed wing featuring an aggressive 36-degree sweep; The G600 wing is 2.4

oth new Gulfstreams were designed with simplicity in mind. The flight controls need just eight line-replaceable units as opposed to 16 on the G650; major inspections will be at 750-flight-hour intervals and are designed to be conducted along the less-cumbersome lines of the airline-style MSG-3 program; the G500 is also the first business aircraft manufactured with a Data Concentration Network (DCN), which significantly reduces cables, parts and weight. The G600 (all photos on this page) and G500 both feature large oval cabin windows, a customizable full-size galley and a new passenger single-seat design with all seat controls located on the inboard armrests.

Power for the aircraft will come from Pratt & Whitney Canada’s new PW800 engines. The class PW814GA and PW815GA powerplants have the same core technology used in the company’s geared turbofan airliner engines. They have a 10,000-hour time-between-overhaul limit (TBO) and no midlifeinspection requirement. The cabin cross section of each aircraft measures 27.7 meters (91 inches) wide and 22.6 meters (74 inches) tall—about seven inches wider and two inches taller than cabins in the G450 and G550—and they can be configured for up to 19 passengers. The G500 has three living areas and the G600 has up to four as well as an optional crew rest area. Both aircraft offer forward and aft lavatories, plus a full-size galley that can be located either forward or aft. The flexible galleys allow a high degree of customization and feature a four-cubic-foot refrigerator, a microwave/convection oven, an optional steam oven and an oversized sink. The roomy baggage compartment is accessible in flight through the aft lavatory and has additional floor and ceiling tracking to allow for flexible loading. It incorporates fold-down shelving and space that can be configured to store golf clubs, ski gear or large suitcases.

and a head-up display system. The full three-axis digital fly-by-wire system offers benefits that include flight-envelope protection, stability augmentation, increased redundancy and reduced maintenance. The streamlined and highly styled cockpit, which is finished in black leather with metallic accents, is the most striking feature of the aircrafts’ interiors. Most of the ­ switchology found in earlier designs has been eliminated. Inputs are made through five Honeywell touchscreens with large, easy-to-view icons. Gulfstream’s familiar cursor-control devices (CCD) are integrated into the center console at the head of the hand grips. The console extends aft of the pilot seats, but it is lowerslung, making step-over entry and exit easier. The CCDs give each pilot control of three of the four main display screens and allow data to be shifted between them in the event of a failure. Out the windshield and over the nose, visibility is expansive. The gaspers are large and located to provide optimum ventilation. The new design Ipeco crew seats allow for multiple adjustments. The elbow rests behind the sidesticks also are adjustable, as are the rudder pedals. The sidewalls offer ample storage space for personal items. Two 110-volt power outlets are aft of the pilot seats. What it all adds up to is a pair of speedy aircraft that offer simplified maintenance and operation, long range and greater passenger comfort. This formula paid off for Gulfstream on the G650 and it should translate well to these two new, albeit somewhat smaller, largeBJT cabin aircraft.

Game Changers Many fine business aircraft are new to the Asia Pacific Region, but these five promise to raise the bar in their respective categories in terms of comfort, capabilities, and technology. by Mark Huber

Large-Cabin, Long-Range Dassault Falcon 5X Here comes the widest conventional bizjet cabin in the sky. Dassault revealed its long-antici­pated large-cabin twin, the 5X, in late 2013. Delays involving the Snecma Silvercrest engines have pushed the certification schedule back by more than two years; now planned for the first half of 2020, the $45 million bizjet features a much larger fuselage diameter than its predecessors—2.7 m (8.86 ft). That makes it even wider than the 7X, the company’s current flagship, which has an 2.5-m (8.2-ft) fuselage. The new tube yields 198 cm (78 in) of headroom and an overall volume of 50 cu m (1,766 cu ft). It is widely expected to be the template for follow-on models. Cabin configurations available include seating for 12 passengers. The 5X has a planned maximum takeoff weight of 31,298

kg (69,600 lb), a range of 9,630 km (5,200 nm), a top speed of 1,103 km/hr (M 0.9) and much longer maintenance intervals than previous Falcons. Dassault claims that the aircraft will be 50 percent more fuel efficient and cost 30 percent less to operate than competitive models from other manufacturers.

The in-development Snecma Silvercrest engines have 5,194 kg (11,450 lb) of thrust each and are now expected to be certified in late 2018. These engines are a derivative of the wildly popular CFM-56 series engines developed for the airline industry and are expected to be durable and reliable. A new wing also makes the 5X more efficient than its progenitors and enables good short-runway performance. In addition to being roomy and efficient, the 5X will feature the latest cockpit technology, including computer-driven fly-by-wire flight controls; an upgraded EASy avionics suite based on Honeywell’s

Primus Epic platform; and a new combined-vision system that allows pilots to synthetically “see” terrain, obstacles, and the runway in the worst weather. The new large cockpit also features expansive windows and reclining crew seats.

Super-Midsize Cessna Citation Longitude The Longitude shares a fuselage cross-section with the recently certified Latitude, featuring a 1.8-m (6-ft) standup flat-floor cabin. The airplanes have the same fuselage width (196 cm/77 in at the interior) and height, but the Longitude is just over three meters (10 ft) longer.

Now to be powered by Honeywell’s HTF7000 series turbofans, the Longitude is much faster, too, with a high-speed cruise of 882 km/hour (476 kt) versus the Latitude’s 826 km/hour (446 kt). Full fuel payload for the Longitude will be 680 kg (1,500 lb), 227 kg more than the Latitude offers. While the Longitude originally was to have a range of 7,408 km (4,000 nm), that is now 6,297 km (3,400 nm). This change is the result of Textron Aviation’s announcement of the new largecabin, 8,334-km (4,500-nm) Hem­ isphere and the positioning of the Latitude, Longitude, and Hemisphere as a new three-product family. Originally to be powered by 4,990-kg- (11,000-lb) thrust Snecma Silvercrest turbofans, the Longitude is now slated for Honeywell HTF7700L engines rated at 3,425 kg (7,550 lb) of thrust each, promising more economic fuel consumption while not compromising performance.

For example, like most Citations, the Longitude has excellent short-runway performance: takeoff distance is estimated at 1,494 m (4,900 ft) and landing distance at 1,036 m (3,400 ft). That performance is possible, in part, due to its 30-degree-swept wing with leading-edge slats, winglets, centrifugal ailerons, and five speedbrake/spoiler panels per side. There are other similarities between the Latitude and Longitude, including the Garmin G5000-based flight deck with Garmin autothrottles and radar. Both also are equipped with a vacuum-assisted externally serviced lavatory. The Longitude will offer a full galley with sink and potable water and in the cabin, there is 20 percent more legroom than in competing airplanes, according to Michael Thacker, senior vice president of engineering. The Longitude’s baggage area will be accessible in flight. Seats are all new and are the largest of those on any Citation. “This is a no-excuses supermidsize jet, with a combination of payload, speed, and range that is the best in the industry and with lower operating costs,” he says. The Longitude is now scheduled to fly in mid-2016, with deliveries in the second half of 2017.

Midsize

Embraer Legacy 450 Embraer packs a lot of comfort, value, and new technology features into its midsize Legacy 450—features you’d normally find only in larger aircraft. The $16.6 million jet made its first flight in December 2013 and was certified in December 2015. It has a 15 cm (6 in) cabin stretch and a range increase to 4,630 km (2,500 nm) over the original design specifications. The shorter sibling of the Legacy 500 midsize, the 450 has the same fuselage diameter and many of

the same systems, including fly-bywire flight controls, engines, and avionics. Power comes from a pair of Honeywell HTF7500Es (2,966 kg/6,540 lb of thrust each) that can propel the aircraft to 13,106 m (43,000 ft) in 22 minutes. Maximum cruising speed is 1,017 km/hr M 0.83. The Legacy 450’s 19.2 cu m (678-cu-ft) cabin offers seating for seven to nine passengers. Cabin management and in-flight entertainment are courtesy of Honeywell’s HD Ovation Select system, which allows for control of audio, video, communications, lights, temperature, window shades, and more via drink-rail-mounted units, wireless handheld remotes or a galley touchscreen. The system can interface with high-speed satellite communications and a variety of consumer electronics. The pressurization system keeps cabin altitude at 1,829 m (6,000 ft) at the 450’s maximum cruising altitude of 13,716 m (45,000 ft). The cockpit offers Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics. The four large active-matrix LCDs in the panel connect the pilots with synthetic enhanced vision on an optional head-up display; electronic charts, maps, graphical weather depiction from an intuitive MultiScan weather radar system that sees up to 483 km (300 mi) out; and an airport surface-management system that minimizes the chance of ground mishaps. Fusion can grow to accommodate add-ons such as voice recognition, surface guidance, and new air-traffic-control technology, including automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B).

Light Pilatus PC-24 Want a jet that can land on rough, unpaved, and short fields and has an interior that can be

quickly reconfigured to haul passengers, cargo, or a combination of the two with an oversized cargo door and room for toys like dirt bikes and snowmobiles? Pilatus has the airplane for you. Like the airframer’s legendary PC-12 turboprop, the $8.9-million, six- to nine-passenger PC-24 twinjet features an oversized rear cargo door. On the PC-24, it measures 1.25 m (4.1 ft) wide and 1.3 m (4.25 ft) tall. The voluminous passenger cabin provides more overall space than either the Cessna Citation XLS+ or the Embraer Phenom 300 and it has a flat floor, which means less headroom in the aisle. Pilatus will offer a choice of seven layouts, including executive, commuter, combi, and quick-change configurations, as well as options for an externally serviced forward or aft lavatory and galleys. The PC-24 combines light-jet operating economics with supermidsize-jet capabilities and comfort and is designed to compete with more conventional offerings from other manufacturers. Range with four passengers is 3,611 km (1,950 nm). At maximum takeoff weight of 8,006 kg (17,650 lb), the PC-24 can fly out of fields as short as 820 m (2,690 ft) and have a payload of 1,134 kg (2,500 lb). Powered by a pair of Williams International FJ44-4A engines, rated at 1,558 kg (3,435 lb) of thrust each, the PC-24 will climb to 13,716 m (45,000 ft) in less than 30 minutes and achieve a high-speed cruise of 787 km/hr (425 kt) at 9,144 m (30,000 ft). The engines have a variety of advanced features including thrustvectoring nozzles to provide more lift at lower speeds, a quiet power mode in place of an auxiliary power unit to provide ground power, and inlets that offer ice protection and quiet engine noise. operations. In the cockpit, the customized avionics suite, dubbed Pace (Pilatus Advanced Cockpit Environment), is based on the Honeywell Primus Apex system and features the latest advances. The first PC-24 test aircraft rolled out of the hangar on August 1, 2014, and two years of production quickly sold out. Pilatus has temporarily stopped accepting new orders. Certification is expected in 2017.

Tiltrotor Finmeccanica AW609 A tiltrotor takes off and lands like a helicopter, but can achieve forward speeds comparable to those of a business turboprop like a Pilatus PC-12 or Beechcraft King Air. The U.S. Marines and Air Force have been flying a tiltrotor, the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey, for years. The engines are connected to “prop­rotors” and mounted at the ends of the short wing. The entire assembly—engines and proprotors—swivels up and down to provide lift and forward

speed. Depending on the angle of the swivel, the aircraft flies like an airplane, a helicopter, or a hybrid of the two. Now this utility will be made available to the civilian market. Italian helicopter maker Finmeccanica aims to certify the world’s first commercial tiltrotor in 2017 and to begin customer deliveries in 2018. It’s called the AW609. The company is promoting four configurations for the aircraft, including a standard twopilot, nine-passenger commuter layout; a six- and seven-passenger executive cabin; a two-litter medevac interior; a search-andrescue design; and a patrol/surveillance variant. A new and wider clamshell cabin door has been designed for production models, part of an overall fuselage optimization made since 2011 when AgustaWestland bought out former partner Bell Helicopter’s share of the program. Aircraft performance includes

a maximum forward speed of 509 km/hour (275 kt), a ceiling of 7,620 m (25,000 ft), and a useful load of 1,134 kg (2,500 lb). The AW609 can take off like a conventional helicopter or make a short rolling takeoff like an airplane. Making a rolling takeoff is expected to enable the aircraft to carry more payload and increase its maximum takeoff weight to 8,165 kg (18,000 lb) from the current 7,620 kg (16,800 lb). The extra weight could be used to boost fuel capacity and range, now estimated at 1,389 km (750 nm) (without reserves) or 2,037 km (1,100 nm) with an auxiliary fuel tank. Much speculation remains about pricing but sources close to the program think it will be between $20 million and $24 million—about what you’d pay for a conventional super-midsize helicopter. Production AW609s initially will be assembled at and supported from the company’s U.S. BJT plant in Philadelphia.

ig cabin, great short-runway performance, and long legs. This has been the winning formula for Dassault’s Falcon 900 series for nearly 30 years through multiple upgraded iterations, the latest of which is the $43.3 million 900LX (All prices in this article are U.S. dollars). The Falcon

900’s trijet design lets you get into and out of airports you wouldn’t dare try to use in a comparable twinjet, especially on hot days. Its intelligent, strategically applied combination of fuselage materials—including Kevlar, carbon fiber, and titanium—yields a strong tube that can weigh thousands, in some cases tens of

thousands, of kilograms less than other twinjets in its class, thereby delivering superior fuel economy. Aside from minor changes in engine thrust, newer avionics, digital cabinentertainment systems and a few hundred kilometers of additional range, the new 900 you can buy today is pretty much the same as the originals that rolled off the production line in the late 1980s. Dassault has produced more than 500 of the series 900 Falcons since 1986, and they hold their value well (see chart below). Granted, older aircraft in general require more maintenance and you may spend heavily at first to refurbish them. Unless you’re willing to live with mediocre dispatch reliability, some older airplanes simply make no sense. But the Falcon 900 does. You can pick up a 1999 Falcon 900B for $9 million, fit it with winglets, new interiors and avionics upgrades, and have a really nice airplane for $12 million to $13 million. Older 900Bs sell for even less. The aircraft valuation service Vref reports that some are going for as little as $5.75 million, and a few 900As that were given the engine upgrade to a B are priced lower still.

roduction of the B model began in 1991 and ended in 1999. Compared with the original 900, it features upgraded Honeywell TFE731-5BR-1C engines, increasing the 900B’s range to 7,408 km (4,000 nm). Compared with the 900A, the beefier engines add 5.5 percent more thrust on takeoff; cut time to climb to 11,887 m (39,000 ft) at maximum takeoff weight from 29 to 26 minutes; and goose the speed an extra 2 percent at cruise altitude. You can better those metrics with blended winglets from Aviation Partners, which cost

They also facilitate a faster climb to altitude, so you burn less fuel in the process. And winglets have another attribute: they look cool and will turn even an old 900 into majorleague ramp candy. Authorized installers include Duncan Aviation, Hawker Pacific Asia, Midcoast Aviation, Standard Aero, TAG Aviation, and West Star Aviation. The 900’s 35.8-cu-m (1,264cu-ft), 10-m-long (33 ft), flat-floor cabin is still one of the best ever designed for all-around utility. Though not perfect, it is comfy. It’s pressurized to maintain a sea-level cabin to 7,620 m (25,000 ft) and that’s great for beating back jet lag.

A traditional cabin layout features a galley opposite the main entry, a small forward closet, a forward clubfour grouping of larger executive seats bifurcated with folding sidewall tables, then four narrower seats arrayed around a hi-lo conference table across the aisle from a credenza/entertainment center. Aft of that through an optional pocket door is a three-place, side-facing divan with berthing top that converts into a bed across the aisle from an executive workstation. Behind that is the lavatory with another small wardrobe closet and through the lavatory passengers can access the heated 3.6-cu-m (127-cuft) baggage compartment in flight. The external baggage door incorporates a step for easy loading. Natural lighting comes from 24 windows. My only criticisms of the cabin concern the smallish size of those windows and the height of the seat bases, which are a little short for taller folks. Otherwise, it is airy, light and elegant. Depending on the cabin layout you select, you can accommodate 11 to 14 passengers plus three crewmembers. If you plan on using the aft of the aircraft as a private stateroom, make sure the used 900 you select is equipped with the optional second lavatory in the forward fuselage. You’ll appreciate the lack of interruptions and your crew and other passengers will value the convenience.

ew 900 owners fly them at full passenger capacity. If you don’t plan to do so, you can make your aircraft more comfortable with a few basic layout changes. If you opt to gut the interior, consider an enlarged forward self-serve galley followed by eight single executive seats in the main cabin, and an electrically reclining three-place divan that folds down into a bed opposite an entertainment credenza with large pop-up flat-screen monitor in the stateroom. This layout provides sleeping areas for five. New single executive seats, available for retrofit, have optional footrests and can be reclined to lie-flat, full-berthing positions. Acoustic-blanket sound dampening also has come a long way since 1989, and installing it will significantly reduce cabin noise, by three to seven decibels in flight. Retrofitting adjustable color/intensity LED lighting is another effective means of cutting passenger fatigue. Maintaining any Falcon is pretty much a labor of love with generally higher requirements for mundane things like routine lubrications. However, the engines don’t have a recommended time between overhauls and can be maintained “on condition,” just like the engines on most airliners. This doesn’t mean they’re maintenance free. Inspections must be performed at regular intervals and you’d be wise to enroll the engines in Honeywell’s MSP hourly maintenance plan. In the past, the downside with Dassault was that while it made great airplanes, it didn’t have the product support to match. Those days are over. Dassault noted last year that it had a 98.5 percent parts-availability rate—meaning that customers nearly always receive parts on the day they’re needed—and that most parts ship within 30 to 60 minutes of order placement. The French manufacturer’s customer-support program now uses two company-owned Falcon 900s as rapid-response aircraft, one based at Teterboro in New Jersey and the other at Le Bourget in France. The Falcons will be used to transport Dassault Go Teams of technicians, parts and tools and, if necessary, transport customers to their destinations, while their aircraft are being serviced. This first-class product support should help keep the Falcon 900B popular for years to come. If you’re looking for a large-cabin jet that does virtually everything well, this could BJT be the airplane for you.
