AUA‘I WAS THE FIRST ISLAND I ever visited—and I

don’t remember it.

I was just a baby, not even walking yet, but my parents talked more about that family vacation than any other trip we took. My mom would tell the story about my dad climbing a coconut tree while she cradled me in her arms.

I didn’t go back to Kaua‘i until I was an adult, opting instead for the beaches of Maui and hiking trails at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. At the time, Kaua‘i seemed too slow, too laid-back for me.

Fast forward and the Garden Isle has become my favorite Neighbor Island, and for exactly the reasons I avoided it. I love that it’s slower paced, I love its laid-back vibe.

And apparently you love Kaua‘i, too.

The Garden Isle was voted Best Island in our 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards—see the complete list on Page 30—with O‘ahu a far-off second. So we decided to share with you our favorite things about Kaua‘i—since you’re big fans, too. (See Page 70.)

This year’s list is one of our most comprehensive, with thousands more votes this year than last. (Thank you for voting!) There are repeat winners, a few surprises and lots of great ideas to help you plan your next vacation to the Islands.

This issue also features the winners of our annual photo contest, in its 25th year. (See Page 78.) To celebrate the resilience of Maui—it’s been over a year since a deadly wildfire destroyed Lahaina and took more than 100 lives—we added a new category for photos of the Valley Isle. The submissions were so captivating and emotional, it was hard to narrow it down to one. This year’s winners really captured the beauty and uniqueness of the Islands, and we hope they inspire you to visit soon.

Over the years I’ve fallen more in love with Kaua‘i.

On my most recent visit to the Garden Isle, I met up with friends from Seattle, one who had never been to Kaua‘i before. I sent her an itinerary filled with all the must-sees for first-timers—Hanalei Bay, the Nāpali Coast, liliko‘i chiffon pie from Wong’s Chinese Restaurant. We hiked to Waipo‘o Falls in Kōke‘e State Park, walked around Art Night in Hanepēpē, ate kūlolo and taro chips, and relaxed on the lānai of our spacious hale at Waimea Plantation Cottages. It turned out to be one of my favorite trips to date.

And now I see why my parents loved Kaua‘i so much.

A Race​​​ into Summer ​In Hawai‘i ​​​​outrigger canoe rac​​ing is​​​​ more than just a sport. ​​For many people, it’s a return to tradition.

UMMER MARKS THE START OF PADDLING SEASON in Hawai‘i​, when​​​ the

ocean becomes an arena for weekly regattas. ​They’re​​​​​ exciting spectacle​s​, ​with ​ six-person ​outrigger ​canoes sprint​ing​ distances ranging from a quarter​-​​​mile to 1 ½ miles ​across​​​the open ocean.​​Later in the summer and early fall, longer-distance races—41 miles across the Kaiwi Channel—are held, with even larger crews.​ In Hawai‘i the wa‘a (outrigger canoe) is ​​​​a symbol of trials and triumphs, struggle​s​and perseverance.​​ ​​And it’s a tie to the past, a return to tradition. ​Centuries ago,​​Polynesian voyagers arrived on the shores of the Hawaiian Islands in double-hulled canoes​​ carved out of ​​single koa log​s​and lashed together with plant fibers. The wa‘a carried the first settlers to Hawai‘i​, its crews navigating thousands of miles across the open water guided by​​​the stars, ocean currents​​ and ​the flight patterns of ​birds​​. ​​They​​​ battled the ocean while simultaneously working with it​. With that came a ​​​​​​​deep reverence​ for the waters all around them and a connection that’s become ingrained in​​​Hawaiian culture.

In the Hawaiian Kingdom the ali‘i (chiefs) practiced hei hei wa‘a (outrigger canoe racing). The exact origins of the sport are unknown, but it’s said that canoe racing ​in Hawai‘i has been around as long as there have been ​​​two canoes in the water. ​And ​​​like many cultural practices in Hawai‘i, canoe racing was almost a lost tradition. As ​​Western influence swept across the Islands the sport was banned

for a period because of its association with gambling, as people placed bets on racing. ​​But in​​​ 1885, King ​David ​ Kalākaua, the last king ​​ of Hawai‘i and affectionately known as the Merrie Monarch, ​showed his support by holding ​​​a regatta to celebrate his birthday and the sport of outrigger canoe racing. ​ Then, ​in 1908, the Outrigger Canoe Club was founded on O‘ahu to help revive ​the sport​​​​​​​.

For many paddlers, hei hei wa‘a ​​ is ​​a way of life and an opportunity to perpetuate Hawaiian culture.

Across Hawai‘i​​dozens of clubs pass down the traditions of canoe racing to keiki (children).

This year​​the O‘ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association​​celebrates 75 years. The foundation​ comprises more than a dozen clubs and​is the largest organization of its kind in the state​​. In the past racing season, it oversaw more than 3,000 active paddlers.

From March to October, the organization hosts ​two dozen r​aces in the waters surrounding O‘ahu, including the Na Wāhine O Ke Kai in September and ​the ​Mokoka‘i Hoe in October​, both of which ​​​ are considered ​​pinnacle competitions​​.

Established in 1952, the Mokoka‘i Hoe requires paddlers to cross ​​ the treacherous Kaiwi Channel​between Moloka‘i and O‘ahu​​​—41 miles of rough sea​. “It was the catalyst that sparked other long-distance canoe races around the world,” says Ikaika Rogerson, an executive board member ​at​​​OHCRA. It wasn’t until 1959 that the prestigious Catalina Channel Crossing held its first race in California.

But the Moloka‘i Hoe was restricted to male paddlers. It wasn’t until 1979 that a group of pioneering women created the Na Wāhine O Ke Kai, with t​ he first female paddlers racing across the Kaiwi Channel that same year​, cementing​​​a p​la​​​ce for women in canoe racing.

Today, ​​​the races​, ​which require equal amounts of mental fortitude and physical strength,​​​draw the best p ​ addlers from ​​​around the world. ​​​Rogerson ​describes ​​​the Na Wāhine O Ke Kai and the Moloka‘i Hoe ​ as​​​exhilarating spectacles. ​While the races start on Moloka‘i, ​they finish on the ​crowded ​sands of Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikīkī.

There​the paddlers are greeted by throngs of spectators, hula dancers and other entertainers.​​​​​Scenic viewpoints of the Kaiwi Channel, like the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail and the Diamond Head Lookout, also offer an opportunity to spot paddlers making their way to O‘ahu.

Rogerson adds that the Walter J. MacFarlane Regatta, held every ​​​ Fourth ​of July in Waikīkī, also offers a glimpse into the Islands’ paddling community. The races run ​​​perpendicular ​to the beach, so spectators can easily ​​​watch as ​​ paddlers ride the ​​​​waves to shore​. Hotel guests staying in oceanfront rooms along Waikīkī Beach can even watch the paddlers from their balconies.

Although the fruit bears the Hawaiian name liliko‘i, the two varieties found in the Islands were both introduced. The purple passion fruit originated in South America while the yellow variety is believed to be native to Australia.

N THE HEART OF LAHAINA, diners could

count on savoring bowls of pasta made with quality flour from Italy and seasonal ingredients grown on Maui.

For years, Sale Pepe Pizzeria e Cucina was the neighborhood’s go-to spot for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries or just enjoying Italian cuisine.

Since the beloved restaurant fell to the Maui wildfires in 2023, owners Qiana and Michele di Bari have been passionately working to not only reopen the place, but to keep it rooted in Lahaina. They say Sale Pepe is projected to open in late March at Lahaina’s Emerald Plaza Center.

For the di Baris, providing a safe and welcoming place for their community was the driving force to reopen the restaurant in Lahaina.

“I missed seeing people celebrate their birthday every year, or watching the kids grow up,” Qiana di Bari says.

“We were a part of people’s narratives, and I can’t wait to get back to that.”

At the new restaurant, diners can expect to find Sale Pepe’s classic dishes along with exciting new additions. For the restaurateurs, it’s imperative to keep up with the latest dining trends. “We want to bring what’s happening in the world to Lahaina. I don’t want Lahaina left behind—in any way,” says Qiana di Bari.

In addition to the new spot at Emerald Plaza Center, the di Baris recently announced plans to open a second location at the Kapalua Resort in 2026.

Are there any new dishes you’re excited to share at this iteration of Sale Pepe?

Qiana: I’m excited because we’re going to start making gnocchi every day and we’re going to put it on the menu. We might be able to put ravioli on the menu, too. Those were only specials before because of the time it took. But we figured out a way to make it possible.

I’m also excited because we have a lot of friends who eat gluten free. Now, we’ll offer every pasta in a gluten-free iteration. There will also be gluten-free pizza.

How would you describe the ambience of the new restaurant?

Qiana: We’re trying to give Lahaina something special.

I want people to feel good, loved, fancy. I want them to forget about the world when they walk inside.

We’re trying to create this sense that if the outside world feels like a destroyed Kansas, then it’s like “The Wizard of Oz” when you walk in. There’s a lot of vibrant colors and it’s very rich; it’s an elevated and mature iteration of Sale Pepe.

What’s your background as a chef and restaurateur?

Michele: My main teacher was my mom. I didn’t go to school; I just watched my mom. Then I started to work in different restaurants. I was in Milan, Germany, New York.

In New York, we opened 10 restaurants in the span of 18 years, but we did it with partners. Sale Pepe was the first restaurant we opened on our own. I put all my heart and soul into it, not that I wasn’t doing that before; it’s just different when it’s just you and your wife.

What’s your favorite memory when it comes to cooking?

Michele: My favorite memory is of seeing my mom make homemade pasta on Sunday mornings. She would start to make the sauce, then cook the meat and you start to smell it while you’re still sleeping. She then made pasta by hand. That’s my best memory because it brings me to my mom.

What has the community support been like since the wildfires?

Qiana: It’s just been overwhelming. We lived in Lahaina, and our house was only one of four in our neighborhood that survived. But we couldn’t live there. We’ve been displaced for the last year and a half while we’ve been working on this project.

Two team members took it upon themselves to start a Go Fund Me—unbeknownst to us.

They immediately pegged it for the rebuilding; they committed us before they heard our voices—they just knew us that well.

It raised $100,000. We’ve also gotten support from organizations like the Maui Pono Foundation, to help us with our grease trap expenses.

We know we are lifted up. We know that as hard as this has been, people have been looking out for us.

What are you most excited about with the reopening of the restaurant?

Qiana: I’m excited to play, to wow people and up the ante. I’m also excited to be a Lahaina pioneer and be a part of the group of people that are rebuilding. a creature much larger catches my eye. A spotted eagle ray glides gracefully beneath me, the first one I’ve seen in the wild, its pectoral fins fluttering like wings. I’m in the ocean off Kahe Point, and I’m captivated.

The waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands are home to a colorful collection of marine life. Diving beneath the ocean’s surface is like entering a strange realm full of vibrant coral reef formations and otherworldly sea creatures. As you swim among schools of fish, you might encounter friendly honu (sea turtles), elegant eagle rays and playful dolphins.

The abundance of marine life found here, along with its clear, warm waters, make this beach in West O‘ahu a popular destination for snorkeling.

The island of O‘ahu is dotted with world-class snorkeling spots.

Hanauma Bay, located on the southeastern coast, boasts pristine waters teeming with a diverse variety of marine life. But reservations are required at the nature preserve and there’s a $25 fee for non-Hawai‘i residents—making for a potentially expensive beach day. On the North Shore, Shark’s Cove is another great snorkeling spot, with tide pools and underwater caves. However, it’s seasonal; during the winter, the North Shore’s legendary swells can make conditions there dangerous and snorkeling impossible.

As you head toward the West Side, Kahe Point—about 27 miles west of Waikīkī—is a bit of a hidden gem off Farrington Highway.

You wouldn’t guess it from the road, but for most of the year, the beach has everything you need for exciting snorkeling. From playful marine life and clear visibility in the ocean to bathrooms and showers on land, it’s a fantastic escape from busier beaches on the island.

As the beach at Kahe Point has grown in popularity among locals and visitors, concerns for safety also increased. In response the city installed a lifeguard tower in 2023, and now lifeguards are on duty from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Despite that, snorkeling at Kahe Point is recommended for strong swimmers only. Within the first month of the new tower, lifeguards rescued seven people at Kahe Point, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

Locals have given Kahe Point the nickname Electric Beach because of the nearby power plant, which emits clean water used to cool the plant into the ocean. That warm water attracts a flurry of sea creatures close to shore, and it’s this marine life that lures

swimmers, snorkelers and divers to the beach.

This morning, I’m meeting my friend, Steve, for a couple of hours of snorkeling. After arriving at the beach’s dirt parking lot, we check the ocean conditions. The water’s calm and glassy. Ideal.

We head down to the beach, which is just a small stretch of sand, but it makes entering the water easy. On the beach are other swimmers and groups of scuba divers getting ready for a morning in the water.

After Steve and I gear up, we swim out. Some days the shore break can be rough, so we are prepared. On other days, you need to pay more attention to other swimmers entering and leaving the water since it’s a small beach.

The reef is about 150 yards from shore. Steve and I are avid swimmers, having crossed miles in the ocean SPRING/ SUMMER 20 25

together, so it doesn’t take long to reach the reef. Once we do, we’re surrounded by schools 5. Don’t touch any marine of glittering fish. life, including coral.

We swim with them for a while before making our way south toward Ko ‘Olina to explore other reef systems. The water is crystal clear as we swim above the corals; some of them look like giant heads of cauliflower, others have protruding red limbs. We also come across stretches of sand marked with intricate patterns created by the currents.

As Steve and I take a break in the water, he tells me to listen closely; there are dolphins nearby. We look toward the horizon and see a whole pod of them leaping into the air, two or three at a time.

Exploring new environments expands people’s perspectives— even if it’s in the place they call home. For me, being in the ocean is a reminder that we share this planet with a beautiful array of creatures. We might not see them every day, but we’re lucky when we do.

the land impacts our ocean and its inhabitants.

After we see the dolphins and the spotted eagle ray, Steve and I start to swim back to the beach. It may seem obvious, but it’s important to remember: The distance you swim out is the distance you have to swim back. On the return trip, though, you’re likely to be tired, and there could be a current, too, so keep that in mind.

On our way back to shore, Steve calls to me and points to a honu. In Hawai‘i, the green sea turtle is considered a sign of good luck, which is fitting. I’m feeling especially lucky to have spent the morning at Kahe Point.

EQUILA LOVERS ARE IN FOR A TREAT AT WAIKULU DISTILLERY, Hawai‘i’s only producer of blue

agave spirits. Located in Makawao, this farm-to-bottle operation began as a horticulture experiment and has grown into an award-winning distillery crafting libations exclusive to Maui.

“My plan wasn’t to make it an enormous distillery, just something that could get to a comfortable size, turn a profit and be enjoyable to run,” says owner and distiller Paul Turner. “So far, we’re there.”

The collection features five distinct agave spirits: a silver comparable to tequila blanco; the ‘Ōpio, a short-term aged spirit reminiscent of a reposado; the ‘Ohana Reserve premium silver; the Smoke Pepa flavor infusion; and the Aged ‘Ohana Reserve, which mirrors an añejo.

With accolades for its exceptional products and packaging from the American Distilling Institute and the Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge, Waikulu is intoxicating on multiple fronts.

The company’s success is rooted in Mesoamerican culture and dates back centuries. Indigenous peoples of the region would ferment the plant sap into pulque, and in the 16th century, Spaniards introduced the distillation process that ultimately led to modern tequila. Today, the term “tequila” is reserved for the spirit made from blue agave grown in designated regions of Mexico.

Similar liquors made outside of those locales have different names, like mezcal or agave spirits.

Maui has carved out its own place in the world of agave spirits. Blue agave plants thrive in the island’s temperate climate, mostly because they absorb water and carbon dioxide at night, which requires a narrow temperature range.

“Makawao’s year-round nighttime temperature is in that zone, so the plants are growing every day,” Turner explains.

This year-round growth fosters sustainability, both economically and environmentally. The distillery operates entirely off-grid, using solar energy and trade winds.

Water is recovered and reused for irrigation, while waste is minimized through composting and an incentive program that allows restaurants to exchange empty bottles for credit.

A closed-loop system returns excess fiber, liquid and plant trimmings to the soil, and agave’s natural resilience allows it to thrive without irrigation or pest control.

The whole process, from planting Turner says other spirits, like to bottling, is labor intensive. rum, vodka and whiskey, are made from “boring stuff like corn, sugar, 22

barley or potatoes. There’s nothing fascinating about it.” Conversely, raw agave is drought resistant, covered in sharp leaves and even contains an acid that can irritate your skin, making it a more formidable ingredient. “I think that mana (power) must come through the whole process into the final spirit.”

That process begins with planting; once that’s done, it takes five to seven years for the agave to mature. Those plants typically weigh up to 90 pounds each, but Maui’s optimal growing conditions recently produced a 635-pound plant—the farm’s largest to date.

The piñas, or agave hearts, are trimmed and steam-roasted for two days, which caramelizes their sugars into flavors reminiscent of molasses or sweet potatoes. Afterward, they’re crushed in a machine inspired by the traditional Mexican tahona, a stone wheel historically pulled by animals. Turner’s version is motorized, but still labor intensive.

Next, the juice is drained and pumped into a fermentation tank, where it undergoes a process similar to that used to brew beer. After about a week, it yields a liquid with an alcohol content of approximately 6%.

The fermented agave juice is then pumped into a pot still, which was also designed and built by Turner, for distillation. This step involves double-distilling the liquid to concentrate its alcohol content to as much as 60%.

The finished product is ready for bottling as a silver agave spirit, but some batches take a detour. For more complex flavors, they’re aged for two to 12 months in toasted American white oak barrels, which brings out richer notes of vanilla, cinnamon, maple, caramel and even dark fruits, depending on how long it ages.

Bottling is done on-site by Turner’s five-person team, which handles everything from planting to production. “They get their hands dirty,” he says of the team members.

Bottles are rinsed with the same spirit that’s being bottled to preserve the final proof, then filled, hand-corked, shrink-wrapped and labeled. Between 400 and 500 bottles are produced every few hours.

Then comes the most enjoyable part of the process: consumption. One fan favorite is the ‘Ōpio, aged for six months; it balances agave’s natural flavors with vanilla and caramel from the barrel. Another bestseller—and this writer’s personal favorite—is the Smoke Pepa,

a high-proof silver spirit infused with smoked chile peppers and blended with aged batches for a spicy, smoky finish.

Visitors can taste three spirits ($15) or all five ($22) at Waikulu’s intimate eight-seat tasting room, open Mondays through Saturdays. Guided 90-minute tours ($65 per adult; $43 for the tour only) on Mondays and Wednesdays also provide in-depth looks at the farm and distillery.

Looking ahead, Turner remains focused on refining his spirits while maintaining a small-scale operation. “I could use another couple of acres … but we don’t have big aspirations to go huge,” he says.

Waikulu’s agave spirits are available exclusively on Maui at the tasting room as well as select restaurants, bars, resorts and retail locations.

HE FIRST TIME I LEARNED ABOUT THE ‘ALAKOKO FISHPOND on Kaua‘i was back in 2012,

when I hopped on a stand-up paddleboard on the Hulē‘ia River and glided right past it. Back then it was referred to as the Menehune Fishpond, named after the legendary craftsmen who worked at night, building heiau (temples) and fishponds.

But beyond that, I knew nothing.

It wasn’t until almost a decade later that I realized its history and significance.

It was 2021, and the 600-year-old fishpond, considered one of the most significant examples of aquaculture on Kaua‘i, was up for sale.

The Okada family, which had owned the land since 1986, listed the two parcels upon which the fishpond sits for $3 million. For two years prior the nonprofit Mālama Hulē‘ia had been acting as stewards of the land, clearing over 26 acres of invasive red mangrove with the goal of restoring the fishpond.

It had a 20-year lease agreement to use one of the parcels.

The nonprofit worked with the Trust for Public Land to buy the property and save the fishpond, which has been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1973 and, in 2009, was designated as one of Hawai‘i’s most endangered historic places by the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation. “‘Alakoko Fishpond is one of the finest remaining examples of an inland loko kuapā (brackish water walled fishpond) in all of Hawai‘i,” explains Mālama Hulē‘ia executive director Sara

Bowen, who first become involved in the nonprofit in 2015. “It is a critical piece of Kaua‘i’s cultural and historical landscape, reflecting the advanced aquaculture and resource management systems of Native Hawaiians. Beyond its cultural significance, the fishpond plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy wetland ecosystem, providing habitat for native fish, limu (seaweed) and endangered Hawaiian water birds. Restoring and protecting ‘Alakoko ensures that future generations can continue to learn from and engage with this unique example of Hawaiian ingenuity.”

There was a time in Hawai‘i when nearly 500 fishponds—or loko i‘a—produced an estimated 2 million pounds of fish and seafood per year. These fishponds were a unique part of an integrated aquaculture and ecosystem managed by the community within an ahupua‘a, a division of land stretching from the uplands to the ocean. There were different types of fishponds, ones that grew taro and were stocked with freshwater fish and others lined with rock walls built along the coastlines that trapped fish like mullet (‘ama‘ama) and milkfish (awa). ‘Alakoko is a brackish-water fishpond (loko pu‘unone), which means it has both freshwater from Hulē‘ia River and ocean water. It was encircled by a 2,700-foot-long kuapā (rock wall); within it grew fish and limu.

Today, about 90% of these ancient fishponds are gone, and the remaining—like ‘Alakoko—are in various stages of restoration.

the He‘eia Fishpond, a kuapā-style fishpond that encloses 88 acres of brackish water on O‘ahu’s Windward Side. Built by residents of the area, it’s estimated to be around 800 years old. Its wall—possibly the longest in the Hawaiian Islands, measuring about 1.3 miles—makes a complete circle around the fishpond, which is unusual. (Most other fishponds in Hawai‘i had walls that either formed a straight line or semicircle, connecting one point of shoreline to another.) Restoration efforts began in the 1990s and, today, the fishpond is thriving. People can visit the fishpond—the nonprofit stewards at Paepae o He‘eia offer hourlong guided walking tours—or volunteer to help with ongoing restoration efforts.

‘Alakoko Fishpond is one of the last remaining fishponds on Kaua‘i. (Nōmilu Fishpond on the southwest shore of the island is one of the oldest in the state and is owned by Kaua‘i Sea Farm.) At one time at least six fishponds were in operation in this area around Nāwiliwili Bay, where food crops flourished along the many streams and in the lush valleys.

This region also includes an extensive wetland and estuary, now part of the 241-acre Hulē‘ia National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge provides secluded habitat for more than 30 different birds, including the endangered ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt) 26

and koloa maoli (Hawaiian duck), the ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot) and the threatened nēnē (Hawaiian goose). While the refuge is closed to the general public, there is an overlook that offers a bird’s-eye view of the historic fishpond.

Suffice it to say, this area is an important ecosystem—and one worth preserving.

“Before the restoration efforts began, ‘Alakoko Fishpond was completely overgrown with invasive red mangrove, which had choked the waterways, altering the natural flow of water, and encroached upon the ancient kuapā,” Bowen says. “The pond itself was barely visible beneath the thick vegetation.

The once-thriving fishpond had become in accessible and nonfunctional, and the ecosystem had suffered as a result.

The restoration efforts, particularly the removal of mangrove, were essential in reclaiming this cultural and environmental treasure.”

So what happened to fishponds in the Islands?

At the time of the Great Māhele in the mid-1800s, many of these fishponds were abandoned. By the 20th century, most had fallen apart from neglect, were overrun by invasive mangrove or filled to make way for housing and other urban development. As Hawai‘i’s population grew and diversified, the demand for traditional crops like taro decreased; taro fields were converted into rice paddies and cattle pastures, and large swaths of land were used for sugar production.

Other fishponds were lost to lava flows, tsunamis and other natural disasters.

But the revival of Hawaiian culture, language and political advocacy in the 1970s—often referred to as the Hawaiian Renaissance—led to interest in restoring ancient fishponds across the state.

The community has been working toward restoring ‘Alakoko since 1999, when concerns about the ongoing degradation of the watersheds that feed into Nāwiliwili Bay led to the founding of the Nāwiliwili Bay Watershed Council. One of its goals was to restore the fishpond and restore lo‘i kalo production in the region.

A decade later paddlers from the Kaiola Canoe Club, who practice along the Hulē‘ia River, started a mangrove removal project near the club’s site at Niumalu Beach Park. They removed nearly 4 acres of mangrove by hand.

That led to the creation of Mālama Hulē‘ia in 2015, a nonprofit that, at the time, was dedicated to removing mangrove in and around the river. Those early efforts led to a focus on restoring the fishpond.

Today, though the fishpond isn’t open for daily public access, residents and visitors are invited to participate in monthly community workdays. These volunteer days allow people to engage in restoration work, learn about the fishpond’s history and contribute to its revitalization.

“Though it’s not fully open to the public recreation, it remains a living classroom and cultural kīpuka (oasis) for hands-on learning and stewardship,” Bowen says.

just south of Kona’s airport. Salt is everywhere—we smell it in the air, even taste it, and soon we’ll soak our feet in the briny water.

We are on a tour of Kona Sea Salt Farm, a small operation that harvests salt made from the deep-ocean water that stretches before us. The farm is owned and operated

by Sea Salts of Hawai‘i, which, among other things, creates locally sourced Hawaiian gourmet sea salts.

Honestly, I’ve never given much thought to salt. It’s so simple, almost a given, and appears in every recipe. However, after a few minutes on the farm, I gain a better understanding of the mineral’s importance. Our tour guide, Ipolani Morgan, shares that salt is significant in Hawaiian culture, both spiritually and practically. It is used traditionally in ceremonial blessings and to preserve foods. We learn that the Hawaiian word for salt is pa‘akai.

Here at the ancient Hawaiian settlement of Ho‘ona, where pa‘akai has long been harvested, the sunny warm climate is just right for salt-making. The 7-acre Kona Sea Salt Farm is located at the Hawai‘i Ocean Science and Technology Park, a hub of innovative companies focused on sustainable aquaculture, renewable energy and conservation.

Chief salt-maker Melanie Kelekolio started producing salt at this site 20 years ago as part of a scientific side project. Today Sea Salts of Hawai‘i crafts gourmet salts, produces wellness products and hosts weddings and events on its picturesque perch along the Kona Coast.

Sea Salts of Hawai‘i is committed to conservation and donates 1% of all proceeds to the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project, created to protect sensitive wildlife and critical habitats in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

As our tour continues, we head over to the salt-making area to learn about the process. Morgan explains that seawater is pumped from a depth of 2,200 feet through a 6,284-foot-long pipeline into the long, shallow troughs we’re standing next to. Over the course of a month the water evaporates, leaving behind white, sparkling salt crystals.

A salt master then harvests the salt by sweeping the crystals into piles, a process that’s part of today’s tour. Then, the salt is scooped into wooden hoppers for a final drying stage; after that, it’s inspected and packaged for sale.

This is not your ordinary salt. We discover that deep-ocean water is rich in nutrients and minerals such as calcium, magnesium,

potassium, iron, manganese, zinc and iodine, and has 33% less sodium than ordinary table salt. Also, because it’s sourced from such depths, it is not impacted by surface contaminants and microplastics.

It’s no surprise that the high-quality salt is coveted by chefs near and far. In fact, Kona Sea Salt was recently featured at a James Beard Foundation dinner at Istanbul Hawai‘i in Honolulu and was showcased in chef, restaurateur and television host Guy Fieri’s series, “Guy! Hawaiian Style.”

We finally reach the much-anticipated part of the tour: the tasting. With a whopping 14 flavors, there’s something for everyone—spicy, sweet and savory. I pour little piles of the salts onto my plate, which now resembles an artist’s palette. The salts will be sprinkled on grape tomatoes, cut cucumbers and fresh pineapple, served up special for the tasting.

My favorite, the lemon rosemary salt, pairs perfectly with the tomato and my husband loves the heat of the hot Hawaiian chile pepper salt balanced with the sweet pineapple. Another standout is the bold flavor of the Kona kiawe smoked salt.

Our final stop on the tour is the footsoak cabana outfitted with 12 spalike basins filled with deep-sea water from the same pipeline described earlier. As we dip our toes in, the 47-degree water takes our breath away and I can only keep my feet underwater for short increments before they start to go numb.

We’re told that the frigid magnesium-rich water helps reduce inflammation, improves circulation and eases soreness, among other things. I admit, I do feel more energized after the foot-soak, especially after standing in the midday Kona heat.

Feeling like salt experts, we leave with tingling toes, several bottles of our favorite salt flavors to take home and a new appreciation for the simple mineral that doesn’t often get much love. A T-shirt in the retail shop sends us off with an appropriate parting mantra: “Salty All Day.”

LAHAINA, MAUI Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a hub for whaling and fishing, and most recently, a beloved vacation spot, Lahaina is forever changed. The August 2023 wildfires destroyed thousands of acres, claiming lives, homes, businesses, historic sites and charming streetscapes. Although damaged, the iconic 152-year-old banyan tree in the center of town survived. It has become a symbol of strength and perseverance for Lahaina’s recovery and is showing new growth, just like the community around it.

In the past year, locally owned eateries such as Māla Ocean Tavern have opened back up, the iconic Old Lahaina Lū‘au is up and running and plans for a new elementary school are underway.

THE MUSUBI TRUCK, KAPA‘A With three locations on Kaua‘i— Kapa‘a, Hanapēpē and Kōloa—this food truck concept is all about elevated local-style musubi. Get ones stuffed with crispy chicken katsu or filled with baked tofu and fresh veggies. The most popular is the OG Spam Musubi, served with a tasty kabayaki sauce. It serves poke bowls and bentos, too. On the outskirts of Hanapēpē, this old green plantation cottage is where some of the Islands’ best taro and sweet potato chips are made. Taro farmers Shoichi and Shinko Nagamine started the chip business in 1985 using taro grown in Hanapēpē Valley. Today their son Dale runs the business, which has become a cult-favorite for its ultrafine, crispy slivers of taro and sweet potatoes. The chips dusted in li hing mui powder are a must-try.

HAMURA SAIMIN STAND, LĪHU‘E Charles and Aiko Hamura opened this saimin stand in a converted Army barrack on Kress Street in 1952, serving bowls of hot noodles in a broth from a top secret recipe.

Today, the third-generation-run restaurant has become a landmark on Kaua‘i. The saimin noodles are locally made and the broth is still a secret. It’s so good, in fact, it earned the title of American Classic from the prestigious James Beard Foundation in 2006. But go early; it’s first come, first served. The liliko‘i chiffon pie is a must.

KŌLOA RUM CO., KŌLOA For the rum of it, visit Kōloa Rum Co. The Kaua‘i distillery started in 2009 using Hawai‘i-grown sugarcane to produce artisanal rum. Kōloa Rum Co. has since expanded to Kilohana Plantation in Līhu‘e, where it welcomes visitors to its tasting room and store. Here, rum lovers can sample premium single-batch Hawaiian rums and dangerously delicious rum cocktails as well as rum cakes and rum fudge.

The shop, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, is a mainstay among locals and visitors and the island’s only bookstore. It’s worth the journey south to browse its impressive selection of new and used books, vintage cookbooks, comics, vinyl records and other treasures. JP’S PIZZA, ‘ELE‘ELE JP’s Pizza is probably Kaua‘i’s best-kept culinary secret—and you can blame its location. Hidden in the dusty town of Kaumanaki, 20 miles west of Līhu‘e, this little pizzeria serves up Brooklynstyle pies that folks—even NYC expats—are raving about. Kaua‘i-born owner Xavier Machado uses fresh ingredients and imports the highestquality products he can, like whole Di Napoli San Marzano-style plum tomatoes and mozzarella from Italy. VERDE, LĪHU'E What started as a small spot in Kapa‘a has turned into a full—and busy—restaurant in a shopping center in Līhu‘e. Customers love the restaurant’s philosophy of serving clean and healthy food: locally sourced ingredients, grass-fed beef, antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken and pork, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

THE LODGE AT KŌKE‘E, KŌKE‘E The only restaurant in Kōke‘e State Park could very well be one of the best on the island. NĀPALI COAST Easily one of the most beautiful vistas on the island, this 17-milelong coast boasts emerald cliffs and verdant valleys and is only accessible by foot along the Kalalau Trail, or by boat or helicopter.

(If you take a helicopter, you’ll be able to see the majestic Manawaiopuna Falls, a backdrop in the film “Jurassic Park.” It can only be seen from above.)

KŌKE‘E STATE PARK, KŌKE‘E This 4,345-acre park on the west side of the Garden Isle boasts 45 miles of unique hiking trails and grand views, from cascading waterfalls and Waimea Canyon to the fabled Nāpali Coast. Hikers can even explore a native wet forest on the Alaka‘i Swamp Trail.

Nonhikers—and hikers, too—should check out the park’s two lookouts: Kalalau and Pu‘u o Kila. Both offer sweeping views of the emerald cliffs of the Nāpali Coast.

WAIMEA CANYON, WAIMEA Mark Twain is credited with coining it the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and it is simply spectacular. At 14 miles long and more than 3,600 feet deep, Waimea Canyon is a dramatic and unexpected site on the lush Garden Isle. Its sharp cliffs and rugged crags are colored in a desert-palette of red, brown and green. You can often spot a cascading waterfall in the distance, too. The overlook in Waimea Canyon State Park is the perfect spot to witness one of the Islands’ most remarkable geological features.

HANALEI BAY, HANALEI A visit to Hanalei isn’t complete without stopping at Hanalei Bay and its historic pier. The crescent-shaped beach is a great place to swim, surf, fish or just lounge on the sand. Walk down the pier for even better views of the bay. With lush mountains and cascading waterfalls as your backdrop, you’ll understand why it’s considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawai‘i.

KĪLAUEA LIGHTHOUSE, KĪLAUEA The Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse was built in the 1900s as a beacon for ships and sailors. But as lighthouses became obsolete, this one became Hawai‘i’s last manned tower. In 1976 the flash off of Kīlauea Point went dark. By 1979 it was placed on the Hawai‘i and national registers of historic places. Today, it’s part of the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, where bird-watchers can flock to the lighthouse to see hundreds of seabirds nesting

along the cliffs. Even if you’re not a bird enthusiast, the lighthouse offers spectacular views of Kaua‘i’s coast. In the winter, be on the lookout for humpback whales and their calves.

‘ANINI BEACH, KĪLAUEA Hidden from the main road, ‘Anini Beach is a little-known gem on Kaua‘i’s north shore. With one of the longest and widest fringing reefs in Hawai‘i, it boasts a shallow lagoon that’s great for snorkeling—and perfect for kids. There’s lots of parking and restrooms but no lifeguards. Sunrises here are particularly stunning.

MĀKUA BEACH (AKA TUNNELS), HANALEI This north shore beach earns its nickname from its labyrinth of underwater lava tubes. It’s considered one of the best snorkeling spots, with towering coral formations and an array of colorful marine life. Snorkeling at this beach is best during the summer.

HĀNĀPEPE SALT PONDS, HĀNĀPEPE For centuries Native Hawaiians have been farming salt, or pa‘akai, pa‘akai in these flats on Kaua‘i’s southwestern coast. There are nearly two dozen families tasked with farming salt, which, as tradition dictates, cannot be bought or sold, only traded or given. Native Hawaiians have long used salt for seasoning and preserving food, for religious ceremonies, and for medicine. As with many coastal areas in Hawai‘i, the ponds face environmental challenges including erosion, pollution and sea level rise.

WAI KOA LOOP TRAIL, KĪLAUEA This easy and flat 5-mile loop, which can be accessed through the Kaua‘i North Shore Dog Park, leads hikers through a serene forest. At roughly the halfway point, hikers reach the Kīlauea Stone Dam, built during the height of the sugar plantation era. Today the area surrounding the dam is a garden oasis, with a cascading waterfall, lush greenery and even a Buddha statue. It’s a peaceful hike, and as idyllic as the rest of Kaua‘i.

MĀHĀ‘ULEPŪ HERITAGE TRAIL, PO‘IPŪ This flat trail runs along Kauai‘i’s rugged southern coast and leads hikers through the island’s natural history and some unique archaeological sites. It’s an easy 2-mile out-and-back hike starting at Keoneloa Bay, commonly referred to as Shipwreck Beach. The trail zigzags past sand dunes, striking geological features, limestone formations and an ancient heiau (temple). At the end you’ll find the Makuawai Cave, the largest limestone cave in Hawai‘i and one of the richest fossil sites in the Pacific. (The cave closed to the public in 2023.)

This coastal path is great for biking, jogging or walking. It’s separate from the highway and paved, making it perfect for strollers and wheelchairs. During the winter you might see migrating humpback whales.

WAIPĀ FOUNDATION, HANALEI For over 20 years, this nonprofit has stewarded the 1,600-acre ahupua‘a (land division) of scenic Waipā on Kaua‘i’s north shore. NATIONAL TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS, VARIOUS LOCATIONS For 60 years, this nonprofit has run three gardens on Kaua‘i—Limahuli Garden & Preserve, Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden. Each one offers guided and self-guided tours through collections of various native and exotic plants and trees. The twilight garden tours at both Allerton and McBryde gardens—held Tuesdays through Saturdays—are popular and sell out. ntbg.org COMMON GROUNDS, KĪLAUEA Once a sugar plantation and guava farm on Kaua‘i’s North Shore, Common Ground in Kīlauea is a veritable regenerative agro-forest that sprawls across 83 acres and offers a glimpse into the future of farming in Hawai‘i. Its mission is to increase local food production while breaking Hawai‘i’s reliance on imported food. TREE TUNNEL, KŌLOA Commonly referred to as the Tree Tunnel, this canopy of 500 eucalyptus trees lines Maluhia Road, creating a natural gateway to the towns of Kōloa and Po‘ipū on the island’s south shore.

But he had dreams of opening one up on Kaua‘i. So he did. You can visit the factory in Hanapēpē—it’s the original building—though the shop is temporarily closed. GOTEBORG MUSUBI Another uniquely Kaua‘i snack: a musubi topped with slices of fried Goteborg sausage and furikake.

Hormel only sells its Goteborg—a German-style sausage—in Hawai‘i, and this musubi is almost exclusively found on the Garden Isle. The flavor of the sausage is akin to hard salami but milder. It’s Kaua‘i’s version of Spam musubi.

This year we launched a category dedicated to the island of Maui. More than a year has passed since the devastating and deadly Lahaina wildfires. As the West Side rebuilds, we’re in awe of the resilience and strength of the community, both of which are well-captured in this year’s contest. Featured in the next few pages are the winners in the categories of land, Maui, ocean, people, wildlife and sunsets, as well as the overall grand-prize winner.

On this particular morning, there were so many ‘i‘iwi (Hawaiian honeycreepers) flying around us, we were literally running back and forth past each other trying to get as many shots as we could.

25th Annual Photo Contest

First Place, Land Grigory Heaton, Pasadena, California Hawai‘i Island I took this photo on the Big Island, inside Kazumura Cave, the longest lava tube in the world, looking back toward one of the entrances. This particular visit was to photograph rare cave insects that live inside the lava tube, but I was happy to get this photo of the cave itself with the lush greenery surrounding the skylight.

First Place, Maui Daniel Sullivan, Maui Lahaina, Maui On Sept. 8, exactly one month after the Lahaina fire, thousands gathered on Maui’s West Side for a paddle-out. A paddle-out is a traditional Hawaiian tribute to the life and legacy of people who have passed away.

In most cases, the paddle-out is a floating memorial held in the ocean, where surfers honor someone they cherished. Carrying flowers and lei on top of their boards, thousands gathered to remember Lahaina and the lives of so many we lost. For the many of us there it felt like the first day we had begun to heal. For me this was the reason I love Maui so much—because of our community and because of our aloha.

First Place, Wildlife Leighton Lum, O‘ahu Kahe Point, O‘ahu This was taken at Electric Beach. We were lucky enough to stumble upon two monk seals playing in the water. This eventually turned into five monk seals over the course of an hour as they weaved between the divers.

While I’d love to complain about a hectic schedule or long commute, I was actually exhausted from all the fun I was having.

Once I checked into the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai, a sprawling oceanfront luxe resort that looks carved into lava rock, I felt immediately energized. I donned snorkel gear and slid into the 1.8-million-gallon King’s Pond stocked with more than 1,000 tropical fish and a spotted eagle ray named Kainalu.

Then I relaxed in the hot tub at the quiet Beach Tree pool, with an unobstructed ocean view. And I watched a pod of dolphins jumping and playing in the water. That was hard work and by dinnertime I was spent!

And hungry.

The resort boasts five restaurants, including the fully renovated ‘Ulu Restaurant and the brand-new sushi lounge just above it. Noio, which opened in early 2025, boasts a nightly menu featuring freshly caught fish and seafood alongside authentic Japanese dishes. But its

crown jewel is a seven-course prix fixe omakase (literally means, “I leave the details up to you,” in Japanese) crafted by rising sushi chef Nuri Piccio. While the resort has been serving sushi at its restaurants since it opened in 1996, this is the first time the property has ever had a dedicated omakase sushi bar.

And it definitely has a vibe of exclusivity.

There are only 12 seats with two seatings a night, five nights a week. Cost is $350 per person and the menu showcases super-fresh sashimi, a soup of savory custard dish, a grilled course and dessert. Dishes have included the puddlinglike chawanmushi with luscious uni (sea urchin roe), blue crab and ali‘i (king oyster) mushrooms; seared kampachi (almaco jack) with dried kelp, pickled daikon and nori sheets; and a salad with locally grown limu (seaweed), sea grapes and sesame konbu dust.

Even if you decide to skip the omakase, dinner at Noio is spectacular, with an ocean view to match. The menu boasts a variety of fresh sashimi and nigiri (which can be enhanced with black truffle and caviar), Japanese and American wagyu, and a slew of à la carte dishes like hamachi carpaccio, braised abalone and spaghetti topped with cured pollack roe and shrimp.

Downstairs is the reimagined ‘Ulu, the resort’s signature restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. Nearly three-fourths of the ingredients featured on the menu here—from mushrooms to lobster to even the rum—are from more than 160 local farms on Hawai‘i Island.

The open-air dining area is warm and inviting, with great views of the ocean from every table. Feeling the salty breeze immediately put me in relaxation mode.

(Well, the ‘Ulu mai tai helped, too.)

Our dinner started out with a plate of a half-dozen oysters dressed in a preserved lemon-cucumber mignonette. The oysters—a variety of Eastern oyster originally from the Chesapeake Bay area—are raised in the resort’s Pūnāwai Lake, harvested and served in three of the resort’s restaurants, including ‘Ulu. You can’t get any fresher than that.

Following the oysters was the restaurant’s popular crispy chicken—and yes, it really is crispy—with a tangy gochujang-citrus glaze and paired with pickled daikon.

That came with housemade noodles tossed with an umami-packed shio-konbu-miso butter and topped with caviar, and ‘Ulu’s signature miso crab leg with a yuzu-koshumiso butter and charred lemon halves on the side.

There’s an entrée for everyone, from the grilled fresh catch to the king crab noodles. But the star of the dinner menu is the ‘ahi tuna “Wellington,” carved tableside and intended for two people. (That’s how big it is.) The dish mimics the traditional beef Wellington—a filet steak and duxelles wrapped in shortcrust pastry, baked, then sliced for serving. Instead of beef, this one features a thick slab of ‘ahi, along with ali‘i mushrooms, lū‘au leaf, a unique Surinam cherry jam and foie gras bordelaise that you’ll want to sop up with the pastry shell.

It’s amazing that even after all that, we still ordered dessert.

It was hard to resist the caramel mac-nut bar, with a dreamy milk chocolate crémeux, salted caramel and puffed sorghum that was supposed to mimic popcorn. It tasted like a fancy Snickers bar—and I wasn’t mad about it. The roasted pineapple parfait was a great meal-ender, with tangy notes of pineapple, liliko‘i (passion fruit) and Meyer lemon.

A long day turned into a long night. No complaints here.

MBLEMATIC OF POLYNESIAN VOYAGING, the

Hōkūle‘a is a replica of an ancient double-hulled canoe, like the vessels that carried the first people to Hawai‘i’s shores. The canoe was built in the 1970s and set sail on its maiden voyage in 1975. Since then, Hōkūle‘a and its crew​s​have helped revitalize traditional Polynesian voyaging throughout the Pacific. ​ ​​In August 2024, Hōkūle‘a embarked on its Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail, a s​ even​-month journey throughout Hawai‘i​,​which concluded in February 2025. Only using traditional navigation techniques, Hōkūle‘a’s captain and crew covered 3,000 miles and stopped at more than 30 communities in the Islands, including Kailua on O‘ahu’s Windward Side (pictured). When the vessel is docked, the crew leads canoe tours and educational workshops. ​ ​​In March, Hōkūle‘a celebrated 50 years of perpetuating the legacy of voyaging in the Pacific. ​

N HAWAI‘I, F ROM BABY LŪ‘AU TO BACKYARD POTLUCKS, the sounds of Hawaiian slack-key guitar—or kī hō‘alu—fill the air.

These mele (songs) tell stories about life in the Islands, transporting listeners back in time and evoking a sweet sense of nostalgia. From joyful, energetic tunes about Waimea’s cowboy country to passionate odes to sweethearts in Waikīkī, Hawaiian slack-key is the instrument behind many of Hawai‘i’s most beautiful melodies.

The origins of this unique art form trace back to the days of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys). In the early 1800s, to control the Islands’ cattle population, King Kamehameha III hired vaqueros (Spanish cowboys) to train local paniolo. In addition to herding techniques, the vaqueros brought their guitars.

The paniolo experimented with different styles and ways of retuning the instrument to complement Hawaiian mele.

The style of playing they came up with is known as slack key because the strings are, in fact, slackened.

This allows for interesting chord combinations and ethereal melodies. Many musicians develop their own unique tunings to suit their style. On a single acoustic guitar, one musician can create a song with complex patterns, rhythm, bass and melody and, to listeners, it can sound like there’s three guitars in one.

Although it existed for nearly a century, it wasn’t until the 1940s that kī hō‘alu made its way onto recordings. The first known recording is of “Hi‘ilawe,” as performed by slack-key legend Gabby Pahinui.

Released in 1946, the song sparked a musical movement, inspiring more artists to play kī hō‘alu.

Today students learn from slack-key masters, who pass on closely guarded techniques, tunings and even meanings of songs. Together, these masters share the mission of preserving the Islands’ traditions, history and Hawaiian language through kī hō‘alu.

Throughout the Islands, exciting celebrations of kī hō‘alu bring together the best slack-key musicians.

The Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar Festival is an annual event hosted on O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island, from June to November.
