Happy At Home: The Latest Option for Aging in Place

M

any older adults know that they have at least two options for aging: move into a retirement community or stay at home. In the best of both worlds, kupuna would have access to a network of support while they age in the familiarity and comfort of their own homes. This third option does exist, and it’s called Continuing Care Without Walls. “What is Continuing Care Without Walls?” Picture a retirement community with an array of social activities, wellness amenities, and aging support that covers independent living, assisted living, and long-term (round the clock) care. Until recently, these benefits were only available to residents who moved in; however, certain Life Plan Communities (LPCs) now offer their benefits as a membership plan sans move-in. Members

remain independent at home, but they also gain a network of support at the parent community. They can participate in activities, make friends with the residents, and interact with staff who know them by name. The LPC may also offer members access to its amenities, such as event rooms and a fitness center. The most important benefits of membership are care coordination and access to a skilled nursing bed (if or when it is needed). For adults aging at home, care coordination is critical during a health incident. In an emergency, or even for planned events like surgeries, a care coordinator supports members in ways that would be difficult for a member’s spouse or family. Care coordination alleviates stress for all parties by advocating for the needs of the member and helping them navigate complex healthcare systems.

Arcadia At Home maintenance

Furthermore, the member can rely on the Life Plan Community, which is standing by to provide short-term recovery or long-term care if needed. Who Should Join? How Much Does It Cost? Continuing Care Without Walls appeals most to adults in their early to mid-70s. Members in this age group are typically independent, in good health, and able to take advantage of an active lifestyle that includes frequent visits to the parent LPC. Members usually pay an entrance fee between $67,000 $97,000, which guarantees them access to longterm care.

They also pay a monthly membership fee averaging $519 - $727 per month, which provides access to the parent LPC’s amenities, care coordination, and aging support services. Arcadia At Home Arcadia At Home is the only program in Hawaii to offer Continuing Care Without Walls. Members receive guaranteed lifetime care and access to a skilled nursing bed at 15 Craigside or Arcadia (if or when this care is needed). They also have access to a menu of services that includes care coordination, home maintenance, fitness training, housekeeping, an emergency response system, and personal care.

As part of their benefits, members enjoy priority access to 15 Craigside and Arcadia. They may participate in free group activities like exercise classes, games, educational programs, and other activities that are normally exclusive to residents. Members can also take advantage of the amenities at 15 Craigside and Arcadia, including the dining rooms, gyms, pools, and event venues. Wheth-

er members choose to visit the communities regularly or occasionally, they always have the opportunity to develop friendships with residents and employees. Arcadia At Home is available to adults age 62 or older who live in Honolulu, from Salt Lake to Hawaii Kai. As part of the Arcadia Family of Companies, the program offers 52 years of experience in senior living excellence.

he turns 89 this month and is doing really well, especially considering she broke her hip last year. When my uncle renovated the condo a few years ago, he planned ahead for aging in place. We have even-surface flooring that her walker can easily glide across without trip hazards, grab bars in the bathroom and its shower, and we set up the kitchen cabinetry so that her favorite foods are easily accessible and the countertop appliances she uses are all within reach. I feel good knowing that she is independent and safe while I’m not home. My only concern was that my playful little puppy would get in her way, and aside from trying to steal her socks, he’s been really good to her, and she to him. They take naps at the same time in the afternoon and some nights he sneaks out of his dog bed and into her room to sleep on the floor beside her bed. They both enjoy the company, and so do I. After living alone for the last three years, it’s been really nice to sit down to a family dinner together every night. It’s a tradition I grew up with and deeply value. Bending the Lines in an otherwise angular home, a spiral staircase commands attention in the center of this Maui beach house. The Fibonacci spiral looks like a seashell in the architectural plans, explains the home’s architect, Rebecca Ivans Amato of Amato Architecture. “I loved the idea of having this organic, circular, very structural element as the anchoring center point of the house,” she says. NURSERY

Pieces for Paisley Designing a nursery for a firstborn child is a labor of love. BY JADE SNOW PHOTOS BY AARON K. YOSHINO

n the months leading up to the birth of their firstborn daughter, The Splinter Concept’s Davin Jaime and YIREH fashion designer Emily poured their love of design into their baby’s nursery. Both avid travelers with a passion for art, the couple focused the nursery around key pieces that are as fashionable as they are functional. Envisioning his future as a father, Davin took to his workshop to create custom, one-ofa-kind furniture for his baby. The task was as heartfelt and emotional as it was inspiring for Davin, who envisioned the pieces as keepsakes that would stand the test of time. “I wanted her to have a timeless piece like the dresser that could grow with her through many stages of her life. I also wanted to make the crib so that I knew she was sleeping safely in a sturdy piece of furniture,” he explains.

above: The proud parents enjoy a quiet moment in the nursery with their daughter surrounded by sweet, sentimental additions including “The Daydream,” a framed art piece by local artist Margaret Rice, as well as a woven Moroccan rug from YIREH.

NURSERY

Dresser The handcrafted white oak dresser Davin made for the nursery is a standout statement piece. Featuring his love of stylish midcentury modern furniture with elegant hardware, it has become a treasured family keepsake. “I feel so much love when I walk into the nursery. It is amazing to see Davin’s love for Paisley shine through in his work,” Emily shares.

Mood boards guided the couple as they discussed the look and feel they hoped the room would cultivate for their growing family. The result is a mixture of midcentury modern furniture with rustic island flair, accented by bohemian touches that are a nod to YIREH’s global aesthetic. The dresser and crib were completed as focal points of the room, adding décor that showcased the couple’s unique style. Clean lines, organic textures and treasured mementos make the space particularly sentimental to the pair. Walking into the room today with Paisley Indah Rose in tow is a dream for the Jaimes. “It’s surreal, to be honest, because we’ve realized the purpose of why we renovated this room and now it feels complete,” Davin says. The couple now sits in awe of their 2-month-old daughter in the home they created with her in mind. It is an oasis of calm that serves as a testament to their love story, and a safe haven for their greatest collaboration yet.

Floating Shelves Evidence of Davin’s handiwork is seen throughout the Jaime home. Rustic floating shelves house a collection of books and souvenirs from their worldly travels. hawaiihomemag.com • MAY 2019 • 15

hen the owner of this beachfront property on maui was ready to have a new home designed and built there, he knew exactly who to call. Delighted with the interior renovation of his historic, traditional plantationstyle home several years ago, he returned to the same team of designers and builders for this very different project: a modern beach house that would be built from the ground up for his family to enjoy together.

“We wanted to provide them with different areas where they could gather as a large group or in smaller groups at different times of the day as activities are changing.” — REBECCA IVANS AMATO, AMATO ARCHITECTURE

The homeowner wanted the house to feel warm and welcoming for his active family of six. And he wanted a clean, minimal aesthetic with durable materials to withstand the wear that comes with a day at the beach and sandy, salty footsteps through the house. The first floor is designed for making memories together. The open-concept kitchen, dining and living areas all extend outside through sliding doors that tuck into recessed pockets, expanding the great room into a true indoor-outdoor space. Despite

its open connectivity, there are areas designed for distinct purposes, such as completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles in the living room, sitting down for meals together at the expansive dining table, and taking a seat at the inside or outside counter to talk story while meals are made in the kitchen. “We wanted to provide them with different areas where they could gather as a large group or in smaller groups at different times of the day as activities are changing,” explains Rebecca Ivans Amato of Amato Architecture.

Outside, the cantilever design of the second story provides much-needed shade from the afternoon sun so the family can enjoy pupu and drinks on the deck before dinner. “One of the challenges with the western-facing rear of the house is you get this horizontal, intense sun for an hour to two hours in the afternoon, before sunset,” Amato explains. The trellis near the pizza oven and grill also has retractable shades to keep cool al fresco. “It allows them to have a nice place to sit outside and not have the sun directly on them.” Inside, the kitchen is equipped with modern, top-of-the-line German cabinetry and appliances. Gina Dunker of Pacific Source refined Amato’s kitchen design to precisely fit the Bauformat cabinetry and Miele appliances, which go nicely together, she notes. The north wall is a focal point, with the Miele range and Broan hood centered within symmetrical glossy white cabinets and full backsplash. The cabinetry is outfitted in Bauformat Pamplona doors, including matching panels for the Miele refrigerator and freezer columns, dishwasher, wine refrigerator and U-Line ice machine. The interior cabinetry is also white, a detail important to the homeowners that drew them to the Bauformat line. The upper cabinets have bi-fold and tilt-up doors, allowing the homeowners to maximize storage space, and sophisticated lighting integrated in the lower shelf of the upper cabinetry. opposite page: The sliding window above the kitchen sink recesses into pockets, with a pass-through connecting to the outside counter with additional seating. above: The kitchen’s north wall is the focal point, with the Miele range and Broan hood centered within the symmetrical glossy white Bauformat cabinetry and full backsplash. left: The central dining table is large enough for the family of six and their guests to sit down to a formal dinner together.

The lower cabinets are designed to have the clean appearance of two drawers using the C-channel system from Bauformat’s Purista line. Some have a smaller drawer within for cutlery, providing the organizational features of three drawers within the appearance of two. “It really is exactly what we wanted to create: a super cool, fancy kitchen, but not fancy in a way you cannot use it. … It just works and accommodates the lifestyle and

it’s easy, fun and smashing if you look at it. I really like it,” Dunker says. While the main floor of the house is designed for entertaining and spending time together, the second story is intended for much-needed rest. Each of the five bedrooms has an en suite bath and an ocean view. The master bedroom is a true retreat from the entertaining and family spaces downstairs. Its automated roller shades open at the click

of a button to reveal an ocean view, often with stand-up paddleboarders cruising by. The cantilever design that creates a cover for the deck below gives the couple the feeling of sitting as close as possible to the water, with windows on three sides, without leaving the comfort of their bedroom. The second floor has warmer tones throughout, as seen in the Bauformat Bau Lux walnut veneer cabinetry with grain match in the master bath. The wall tile

mimics the waves of the ocean, and even the shower has a window with an ocean view, so the homeowners can always feel connected to the outdoors. With the new home complete, all involved are pleased with the new beach house. “The final result is exactly what the owner wanted: a fun beach place where we were successful to combine function and super high-end, sleek modern design without any stiffness,” Dunker says.

T

hese honolulu homeowners had a simple request for their master bathroom renovation: It needed to be both functional and stylish. They put their trust in seasoned kitchen and bath designer J.R. Ludlow of INspiration Interiors Design Studio to guide them through the process. “The couple had very specific needs, like more functional storage, better lighting and more space in the master shower,” says Ludlow. “Simply put, they wanted their bathrooms updated to match their own design style.” The renovation was extensive, including two full bathrooms, a powder room and laundry room, and Ludlow helped her clients conceptualize the finishes and space planning by creating detailed 3D renderings to help them visualize what the rooms would look like. The ability to virtually walk through each space and experience the layout before construction began was crucial in the decision-making process. Constrained by the condo’s fixed plumbing and limited square footage, Ludlow’s team focused on giving the couple greater space in the master shower with a curbless design, a new bench for seating, and niche for product storage.

While the drains and water supply locations remained unchanged, the footprint of the shower and tub in the master bath was expanded, taking advantage of previously unused space. “Because we could not change the square footage, we changed how each area functioned, giving the family a proper, well-appointed master bath,” says Ludlow. The same tile and countertop material was selected for both full bathroom renovations, with different matte lacquer finishes for the cabinets and

paint colors on the walls. The new powder room was further distinguished with full-height glass mosaic tile. Today, the homeowners are pleased with their updated bathrooms, especially the master bath. Says the homeowner, “We enjoyed working with J.R. [Ludlow]. We are very hands-on with our projects — we would give J.R. our ideas and she would respond with her interpretation and ideas until we all felt that we had a really good result. We like to think that it was a great team effort.”

chuckles and says, “It started with an ice cream machine.” And not a small countertop appliance, but a tall industrialsized Emery Thompson machine found in restaurants. She reflects on the purchase her husband made years ago when they lived in Virginia, mentioning that he had thought about opening a business, but decided to buy it for their house instead. The problem was that the machine couldn’t fit in their Virginia home’s newly remodeled kitchen, so it sat untouched — even when the family had to unexpectedly move back to the Islands.

Learning from their experience in Virginia, they started to put their plan into action. “The driving factor (for the remodel) was I didn’t like the galley-style kitchen,” she says. “I don’t like when my range is not on the same run as my sink, and I like large peninsulas for serving reasons.” Starting out, they needed to embrace the current layout of their tract home, while also enhancing it and making it their own. They turned to Bekin Cabinets for custom cabinetry, built to a home’s specifications. “I like the quality of it, the fact that it’s integrated. That’s why I chose it,” the homeowner says. Custom walnut slab door style cabinetry fills the room, allowing for ample storage in a compact space, and showcases the stunning grain matching work of Bekin Cabinets. The refrigerator and dishwasher are paneled in the same style, creating a consistent look throughout the kitchen. Bekin Cabinets’ custom cabinetry presented the owners with a more functional kitchen. “They were able to accommodate any requests I had in terms of what I wanted the cabinets to do,” she says. That includes creating a 30-inch-deep cabinet to fit smaller appliances and a customized slot just for the ice cream machine. The owners are now able to make the most use of the home’s layout. And their personalities truly shine in this kitchen — from the pops of color to the fun design elements, inside and out. “I wanted something that I wouldn’t get bored looking at,” she says. “It needed to have some amount of interest without it being crazy.” Inspired by the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system, the owner sought tiles for her backsplash that

could mimic the bubble hexagonal tile found in the stations, but with the addition of bright colors. “There’s certain parts that are symmetrical and deliberate randomness,” she says of the design. “Material selection was really important, so taking the time to think about every single piece made a difference,” she adds. The Cambria quartz countertop also showcases a subtle hue of purple that’s “bold but not in your face.” The owner is “always delighted” when she takes a closer look at it. Through a meticulous design process, the owner was able to achieve a unique aesthetic in her kitchen. “In addition to the air of randomness and surprise, I wanted a sense of movement,” she says. “From the diagonal, staggered flooring to the vertical grain pattern of the walnut veneer, and the Annica quartz pattern to the color scatter of the backsplash — everything feels slightly organic in a rather orderly fashion.” Today, the entire family is able to fully enjoy their kitchen renovation, creating and eating homemade ice cream — from Oreo and Thin Mint to classic vanilla and mango sherbet — any time they want in their colorful abode. left: Bekin Cabinets’ attention to detail can be seen in the vertical grain match on this kitchen’s custom cabinetry.

Aging-in-place modifications you can incorporate into your home. BY STEPHANIE KIM

ith more homeowners choosing to age in place — a whopping 90 percent of seniors age 65 and over prefer it, according to a survey by the AARP — home modifications have increased tremendously. “Addressing a current ailment, such as a bad back or knees, or planning for the future to ensure your home can be as comfortable for you later as it is now doesn’t require a whole lot of money if you do it now as part of a current remodel or build,” shares Marshall Hickox of Homeworks Construction. “While most retrofitting options are simple, others can be very expensive, such as creating a curbless shower or installing wider doorways. Plan ahead and these aging-in-place benefits will just look like cool features you designed into your home.” Whether you are preparing for the future or acting now to live in your home safely and independently, it’ll be important to consult a certified aging-in-place specialist, or CAPS, like Hickox, to help you design new or remodel. Work with your local financial institution to learn how you can fund your agingin-place modifications.

Making changes that are not necessarily expensive or labor intensive will help you avoid larger, costly renovations within the home.

Slip-and-fall incidents are one of the most common ways seniors injure themselves, according to the AARP. And with more than a third of injuries occurring in the bathroom, it’s time to make it a safer place.

Transform your home into an overall accessible space with the addition of ramps. Having ramps at your home’s entrance/ exit is helpful for those who need wheelchair access and for those with balance issues, eliminating the difficulties of using stairs.

• Installing grab bars in high-risk areas, such as by the toilet or in the shower and bath, will provide additional support. It’s critical to make sure that proper backing will support a person’s weight, says Hickox. • Widen doorways to make navigation easier. “In older homes with narrow doorways, this modification is often needed,” adds Hickox.

• Once you have grab bars in the bathroom, consider making the bathtub and shower more accessible. “To turn a tub shower into a barrier-free accessible shower can vary with wood or concrete floors,” says Hickox. “There are also replacement tubs that have a door so you can still have a tub to use for therapy.”

• Grab bars are roughly $300$800 per bathroom and widening doorways can cost $400-$600 per door.

• The cost of modifying your bathroom can range from $2,500 to $5,000.

• “Ramps can be aging-in-place or more specifically, ADA, compliant,” mentions Hickox. “Make sure you specify what is acceptable to you.” • Hickox shares that ramps for post and pier homes can be costly, especially if ADA compliance is desired or if site conditions are limited. Cost is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

AGING IN PLACE

Steps to Take for Aging in Place Aging in place doesn’t happen overnight – phew! – so plan ahead to prepare your home to make the process easier on you and your finances when the time does come. BY STEPHANIE SILVERSTEIN

58 • MAY 2019 • hawaiihomemag.com

ESSENTIAL ACCESS WHEN DESIGNING A NEW HOME and planning to age in place, it’s important to consider whether the home will be one floor or two. If it’s two, Randall Omoto, a kitchen and bath designer and certified aging-in-place specialist at Homeowners Design Center, recommends putting the kitchen, a full bathroom and a bedroom — or a room that can be converted into a bedroom later — on the first floor. That way, if a family member needs to remain on one level, they have all the necessities for everyday life accessible.

AGING IN PLACE

A HOME’S FLOORING SHOULD BE FREE of trip hazards, like thresholds between rooms. Consider using the same fl ooring throughout rooms. Natascha Roblee of Pacifi c American Lumber recommends wood fl ooring for aging in place. It’s fl at and durable enough to withstand wear from walkers, wheelchairs and canes, but relatively soft as compared to porcelain or stone. “It’s softer on your feet and back when you walk, and if you happen to slip and fall, it will hurt but it won’t be as great of an impact as falling on concrete, stone or porcelain,” she says.

GET OUT – AND IN ACCESSIBILITY IN AND OUT OF THE HOME IS CRUCIAL for aging in place to prevent being homebound. If you live in a single-family home, consider having a ramp installed. It doesn’t have to lead to the front door, a telltale sign that kupuna live there, points out Maile Shimabukuro-Pascual of Results Design + Planning and Results Construction. Instead, consider a ramp to the side door, or directly into a bedroom entry, which can be helpful for ambulatory care, in case of emergency. Within the home, hallways and doorways at least 36 inches wide help with accessibility and make the home feel more open. “It looks very luxurious, but in the future, should they need assistance walking or getting through the space, it’s still wide enough where it can accommodate two people,” says Shimabukuro-Pascual.

Some of our homes will become social hubs for our extended families and Mainland guests for the next couple of months. In recent years, the kitchen and bath industry has seen an increase in outdoor kitchen design and planning, which include more elaborate setups with electrical and plumbing. These spaces house more than your average barbecue grill. Outdoor cabinetry has evolved as well with more manufacturers offering weatherproof materials, including hardware, that look more like custom cabinets than the previous garage or commercial looking options.
