Around the World Incorporating travel-inspired design. BY CAITLIN THOMAS

raveling has been difficult for the past couple of years and instead of planning trips, a lot of us have spent time browsing social media and curating Pinterest boards of destinations we long to jet off to as soon as we can. While we’re dreaming about our next vacation, why not include some trends from around the world inside your home?

T

Light up your home with Asianinspired lamps. Sannaka-West, a Japanese furniture and accessories shop located in Na Lama Kukui, offers lamps and lampshades with Japanese-style designs. The lampshades are custom-made by PJ’s Island Originals in Hilo, Hawaii Island, says Kisaki Nakayama of Sannaka-West. SCANDINAVIA KEEPS IT SIMPLE

Elements of Scandinavian design focus on minimalism and functionality. To welcome this style into your place, select pieces that are neutral-colored and reflect art, nature and simplicity. Rooms should be kept clean, free of clutter and focused on simple lines and light spaces.

WALK ACROSS TURKEY

Add an intriguing Turkish rug to your living area and be reminded of the country’s unique culture every day. Indich Collection at Na Lama Kukui features an array of rugs that are hand-knotted together in Turkey. These rugs have patterns, textures and cultural influences that create a traveled look.

FOCUS ON THE MIDDLE EAST

Tiles with a Middle Eastern feel can bring warmth to your kitchen or bathroom. To incorporate tiles designed with a Middle Eastern influence, first determine the style and color combination that works best for your space. That way, your tile can pop and be the focus of the room, like in this powder room designed by Homeworks Construction.

EMBRACE BALI

Indonesia is home to a rich culture — and handmade furniture straight from Bali can liven up any space in your abode. Bali Boo, on Kapaa Quarry Place in Kailua, hand selects and imports all of its furniture from Bali. No wood or design is the same and the store’s offerings are made with either solid hardwoods, teak wood, rosewood or monkeypod.

row your own security screen to make your home feel more secluded and peaceful. Plants that double as natural barriers are great alternatives to fences and walls, and they’re more affordable too. Steve Dewald of Steve’s Gardening Service shares his suggestions for the best plants that create privacy.

G

HYBRID CLUMPING BAMBOO VARIETIES

When planted in rows, bamboo provides a nice privacy hedge. Those that are of the clumping variety won’t spread too far from the planting zone. They grow tall — and fast — so there will be some leaf debris, shares Dewald. Minimal care and maintenance is required.

MACARTHUR PALM TREES

For a tropical mood, try Macarthur palms, a popular species that can naturally conceal your front or backyard. These sturdy trees grow in clusters and thrive in sun or shade.

PLANTS

PODOCARPUS

Podocarpus plants can soar high once fully grown. “It’s very hardy once established,” says Dewald. In ideal conditions — regular watering, sunshine and light weeding/pruning, for instance — Podocarpus plants grow large and last a long time. TEXAS PRIVET HEDGES

These quick-growing, robust hedges provide a deep green feel. Texas privet hedges are formal hedges, meaning they have a uniformed, neat look. They should be well-maintained, clipped and planted closely together.

egacy homes passed down to the next generation are a

specialty for J. Martin Builders. This beachfront property had been in the family for more than a decade when the current owners decided to create a new place to raise their children, host family gatherings and eventually retire in. “It is really satisfying to know that we’re providing the setting for years of family events and memories,” shares Jason Gerbozy of J. Martin Builders, which has been delivering quality craftsmanship for custom-built homes for nearly 20 years. “Having lived in Hawaii for 15 years we had a clear vision of the style of home we wanted and how we wanted to live,” says one of the homeowners. “This is the second home Jason from J. Martin Builders has built for us, and we knew he could deliver our vision and overcome the challenges that come from a full custom build.” Ahead of the build, Re-use Hawaii did the deconstructing and salvaging. “We were glad to see the materials getting new life rather than just sending them all to the landfill,” says Gerbozy. Peter Vincent Architects was the design architect and architect of record for the project. “The owner was looking for a clean and modern-style home that would serve as a tropical sanctuary for their family,” says Todd Hassler of Peter Vincent Architects. The residence features a main home, guest house and garage. “The H-plan configuration provides a double courtyard, which are both used as transitional spaces,” adds Hassler. The mauka courtyard has the motor court and exterior vestibule framed by the garage and guest house while the makai courtyard serves as the entertainment area. Here, there’s an expansive lanai and covered dining space that extends from the main house and opens to the ocean.

When you look out from the lanai, the transition from pool to ocean appears seamless, says Gerbozy. left: The two-story “wings” of the house provide excellent cross-ventilation, shares Hassler. The separation also provides the great room with a towering roof with cathedral ceilings and high windows. top right: The home features six en suite bedrooms that can comfortably host visiting family and friends.

For the new house, Peter Vincent Architects’ design is stunning, says Gerbozy. Not only is it beautiful, he says, it’s also comfortable and ideal for gathering and entertaining. The ultimate goal was to provide a seamless connection from the interior to the exterior, says Hassler. The 32-foot pocket lift and slide doors in the great room, from Quantum Windows and Doors, help to accomplish this. One side opens to the lanai, pool and ocean, while the other reveals the reflecting pond and garden, shares Gerbozy. Steve’s Gardening Service was brought on for the landscaping work, using designs from landscape architect Loriann Gordon. The property also includes a saltwater infinity pool and reflecting ponds designed and built by DeBiasi Pacific. Gerbozy credits the collaboration with local suppliers and professionals for the success of this project — and the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the results.

his family dreamed of living in the diamond head area.

They loved how close they’d be to the beaches and parks and the look and feel of the neighborhood. So when they finally found a house within their price range, they acted fast. “We bought the house with the plan of rebuilding,” shares the husband. They envisioned a home with room for everyone — including visitors — along

with outdoor amenities. It also had to be situated as far from the street as possible to minimize sound. Through a friend’s recommendation, they called upon design-build firm Homeworks Construction to get the job done. “They wanted a home that was designed for their growing family,” shares Elyse Grable, selections specialist for Homeworks Construction, with “a large kitchen to congregate in, an open floor plan for indoor-outdoor living [and] a craft room.”

The newly built two-story house has four bedrooms, two full baths and two half-baths, as well as an accessory dwelling unit above the garage for guests. “The style of the home is a combination of a Craftsman style with a touch of elegance and artistry,” shares Grable. And it’s a charming abode, inside and out. The exterior features a rich blue color, along with a bright burgundy for the windows and clean white for the garage door, trim and window casings and subsills. Having an open-concept layout allows the entire first floor to be seen upon entering through the stained-glass front

doors. The living room has 10-foot high ceilings and flows directly into the dining area and kitchen. Sliding glass doors stack and slide completely closed to create an indoor-outdoor connection to the covered lanai, pool, hot tub and yard. The lanai’s tile, in particular, played a big part in setting the design style of the home, shares Grable. It is dressed in decorative Spanish-influenced blue and burgundy porcelain tile, carefully laid out in an intricate design. Outside is also where the wife has her dedicated craft and pottery room. “[Her] craft room for her pottery was something unique and special,” says Grable.

“With polished stained concrete floors and a tile baseboard, it was made to withstand the drops of clay and glazes during her pottery sessions.” But the open, spacious kitchen is where the family spends most of its time together. “The large island is multifunctional with plenty of counter space for preparing and

making meals” and can be used as a buffet table for those special occasions with extended family and friends, says Sean Bradshaw, kitchen and bath specialist for Homeworks Construction. “The island also has a built-in microwave drawer and additional storage on the dining room side.”

far left & left: Stepping into the en suite bath is like walking into a spa retreat, from the white acrylic free-standing tub under the window to the marble floors and vanity with dark-stained wood cabinets and white quartz counters.

Bradshaw designed the space to be timeless as well. Painted white cabinets for the perimeter contrast with the dark-stained cherry wood cabinets at the island. The countertops are quartz and the backsplash is a classic white subway tile. “We also added applied cabinet panels for the appliances and an integrated ventilation hood from Wolf and Dura Supreme for that finishing touch,” he says. When the family wants to rest, they head upstairs where the bedrooms are along with most of the bathrooms and the master suite, which is “very spacious and has a lanai that overlooks the pool area,” says the wife. It has a traditional, elegant master bathroom with a free-standing tub, walk-in shower and marble tile for the shower walls, which the homeowners love. “We also used it on the bathroom floor and created a border with absolute black polished granite tiles and a pinwheel mosaic,” shares Grable. Whether they are relaxing upstairs, preparing a feast in the kitchen, taking a dip in the pool or walking to a nearby park to play tennis — this active family is able to thrive and enjoy everything that their new place has to offer. “We can only hope this home has made their lives better in a way where they can spend quality family time together and have this be their forever home,” says Grable. hawaiihomemag.com • JUNE/JULY 2022 • 25

ucked away in hawaii kai, a recently renovated home gets a brand-new pool and spa. Where a standard swimming pool once sat is now an eye-catching addition that blends in with the surrounding beauty. For the design of the pool, the homeowner wanted to incorporate nature as much as possible — and Pacific Pool & Spa did the rest. The pool, which is 3 ½ feet to

7 feet deep, has a Bali ledge with two bubblers, lounge chairs and a waterfall that flows into the spa. The sounds of water in transit are an invitation for guests to jump right in. The pool is covered in French gray plaster that matches the color of the ocean and reflects the sky, shares Clifton Crawford of Pacific Pool & Spa. The spa is made for relaxation and features 12 jets at various heights. “We used good, strong jets,” he says, with piercing, rotating and spinning options.

The spa was designed as a single body of water, so there’s no extra maintenance needed, explains Crawford. The pool water goes into the spa, the spa fills up and overflows into the pool and creates a small waterfall effect. “That circulation of water

leaves the spa in good shape,” he says. There’s a lot of space in this backyard for large gatherings and to enjoy the sunshine too. In addition to the pool, the property has a gazebo, outdoor kitchen and a deck with breathtaking views of the ocean. hawaiihomemag.com • JUNE/JULY 2022 • 29

advertisements that imagined how Honolulu would emerge from the war years as a thriving, modern city. These penand-ink drawings were infused with idealism and creativity, with the artist and author using what today we would call design thinking to sketch a gleaming Honolulu that was just over the horizon. Seventy-five years later, Hawaiian Electric commissioned Hawaii Business to create a successor that reflects the same kind of optimism and confidence in Hawai‘i’s future as we recover from one of the most disruptive experiences of our lifetime. Honolulu of Tomorrow described a place where the built environment worked in harmony with Hawai‘i’s natural beauty. We wanted a fresh take on this, a Hawai‘i of Tomorrow that envisions resourceful, sustainable islands that adapt to the challenges of the coming decades, especially climate change. We talked to people about what they see for the Hawai‘i of 2050, including experts in design, transportation, agriculture and energy. We received ideas from groups like the Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders and the Office of Indigenous Innovation at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. While technology is an important element of the future they described, so is the responsible stewardship of our islands’ natural resources. In this fi nal installment of the series, writer M. Kaulana Ing describes how education hubs provide an immersive learning experience, illustrated by artist Xochitl Cornejo, and imagines a dynamic new Waikīkī that has become an amazing model of climate change adaptation, illustrated by artist Solomon Enos. I hope you enjoyed this project and that it continues to inspire discussion, as it has at Hawaiian Electric. You can send your comments and ideas to future@hawaiianelectric.com. Our Climate Change Action Plan sees us eliminating carbon emissions from power generation well before 2050 and working closely with our communities to make sure that the clean energy transformation benefits everyone. They crawl up and extrude plastic lattices directly onto building exteriors, 3-D printing the honeycomb structures that anchor the roots of hanging gardens. Vertical forests rise from the facades of neighboring buildings, cooling non-permeable hardscapes and drinking flood waters. Bridges 3-D printed between buildings form walkable common greenspaces high above sea level, adding to the buzz of life in the island city by building up instead of out. On these Highline Constellations, neighbors and visitors meet to peruse locally farmed produce and enjoy public performances. Now, as before, people come from around the world to tour this awe of nature we call home. Here, in the cradle of the organic tech revolution, practitioners teach groups through immersive experiences. One group of school children visiting from Fiji takes trowels and spades to plant huli on a fourth floor veranda. A giant technicolor lei swirls above the class and between residences. It is part of the metaverse layer that adorns the town, visible only through augmented reality (AR) lenses. Twenty years have passed since the Pacific began its slow, sure ascent inland, demanding its preeminence be acknowledged by everybody in its expanse. The greatest minds of Oceania, from Aotearoa to Hawai‘i, pooled their political and scientific capital and spearheaded the international effort to stem the tide. Now, in 2050, after a decade of collective reinvention, we have finally turned a corner on climate. We dream new dreams, and from adaptation blooms solutions in resilience that we gift to our children’s future. Floating promenades bedeck O‘ahu’s south shore, an ornate shield. H E POTE NTIAL O F I N N OVATIO N TO B LOS SO M , like a sprout in a garden pot,

is limited by the size of its confines. In 2050, students learn under the infinite sky. In each school complex, outdoor education hubs outnumber placid classrooms, each site a star in a constellation of learning spanning mauka to makai. At Kona’s coastal hub, children wow wide-eyed around a sea cucumber stuck to their classmate’s cupped hands. The kupuna who placed it there smirks as he describes how its alkaline excrement fortifies coral reefs. “Eeew!” they squeal. Another group of kids huddle around a fishbot, tinkering with its robotic innards on the deck of the learning pier. It’s the caudal fin, they agree, that needs tuning in order to make it really swim in biomimicry of the pāpio schooling 20 meters away. Their teacher stands on the edge of a black ‘a‘ā tidepool three steps between either group, jotting observations into her smartware. It’s exactly the kind of qualitative data that enables friendly artificial intel-

ligence to tailor lesson plans individualized to each student’s strengths, joys, and inclinations. In the decade since Hawai‘i became the global leader in climate innovation, the booming industry has transformed the state’s economy and super-charged school capacity. Now, our teachers act as facilitators of personalized revelations, rather than managers of mini-knowledge factories. Each student is prized for the unique and creative potential they bring to their island’s future. Indigenous science, born of hundreds of generations’ ongoing co-creation of regenerative systems thinking, has reclaimed the zeitgeist. Rivers, farmers, dry land forests, and retired neighbors are invaluable resources for innovative ideas and hyperlocal knowledge. Autonomous electric buses safely shuttle students between hubs, and public wifi is as much an afterthought as the fresh air they breathe throughout the school day. At each site, students learn by observing closely the land they will steward into a new age of holistic resilience, their island a microcosm of our shared planet’s potential.

“I would want to see a place that’s surging forward in technology and beauty but also doesn’t forget where they come from. Hawai‘i is a beautiful place with a lot of history, so paying tribute to it would be respectful.” – E RIN SONG , STU DE NT, MCKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL

“In 30 years, I hope to see Hawai‘i using cleaner energy and ... to not see the effects of climate change. I hope there will be changes in our consumption and that we are protecting and preserving the land around us. ... I see Hawai‘i shifting reliance on the tourism industry and to be self-sustaining.” – MARC GAMAYO, STU DE NT, WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL

Blend Together Connecting indoor and outdoor spaces for maximum enjoyment. BY CAITLIN THOMAS

ith year-round sunshine, Hawaii is one of the best places to take advantage of the outdoors. By extending your living spaces, you can enjoy the benefits of fresh air, natural light and more space to gather with friends and family. Creating functional and beautiful indoor-outdoor living spaces can also enhance your home and well-being.

GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Being outdoors already has great health benefits. When you create an indoor-outdoor living space, you are investing in your overall well-being. A garden or water feature, for instance, can help with cognition and memory, as well as reduce stress.

INCREASE YOUR HOME VALUE

Expanding your home’s living space, boosts your home’s value too. An improved living area makes your place more desirable to potential buyers should you ever decide to sell. Consider adding an outdoor kitchen for added value, complete with a barbecue grill, sink for prepping food, cabinetry for storage and even a second refrigerator.

EXPAND THE LIVING AREA

Let in the sunshine with windows and sliding doors that serve as a bridge between the indoors and outdoors. “Floor-to-ceiling walls of glass are a great way to maximize an amazing view,” says Pam Barrett of Coastal Windows. She recommends Coastal Windows 500 Series High Performance Sliding Doors, Coastal Stacking Doors and Stacking Pocket Doors. For smaller — and more private — outdoor spaces, such as lanais and balconies, Barret suggests Coastal Windows 500 Series High Performance Sliding Windows or Sliding Lanai Doors.

CREATE A SMOOTH TRANSITION

Think outside the box and unlock a new way to blend your spaces with garage-style doors from Raynor Hawaii Overhead Doors. There are sectional steel doors and aluminum ones with glass panels. Sectional steel doors “have been used on porches with a sloped track to follow the roof, so they offer a way to block out the weather or open the entire porch to the outdoors,” says Peter Eldridge of Raynor Hawaii Overhead Doors. “The aluminum with glass doors gives you the chance to expand your secured spaces onto the porch/patio area yet retain the clear view when

they are open. Any family desiring more enclosed space without sacrificing the open airflow and unobstructed view would benefit from a sectional door on their openings.”

MADE TO ENTERTAIN

Create more opportunities for get-togethers by adding durable furniture pieces. The Moments Set and Conic Sectional by Cane-line from INspiration Interiors will bring beauty and comfort to your outdoor space. You and your guests can lounge and relax with ample room for people to mix and mingle.

SET YOUR SIGHTS Before you can dress your home with new windows, you need to evaluate your current situation. Determine what you don’t like about your existing windows and what you would want in new ones. Then seek out advice from experts, like the design consultants at Coastal Windows. “Our design consultants will explore the design considerations for your unique home, and can

LIVING LARGE To make your space feel larger, consider a bay window. “Replacing an existing picture or fixed window with a Coastal Windows bay or bow unit will create the illusion of additional space while providing a cozy corner to read a book, listen to

the latest podcast or simply relax and enjoy the view with a furry friend,” says Barrett. “A smaller Coastal Windows bay window placed above the kitchen sink can add additional light and fresh air to the room, while providing the perfect place to nurture your green thumb.”

WINDOWS

MADE TO PROTECT With hurricane season here, ensuring safety for your home is important. Luckily, there are impact-rated products such as CoastalGard™ windows and doors from Coastal Windows. “Hurricane-force winds can wreak havoc, causing window failure,” which can lead to big problems, ranging from weather damage to complete structural failure, explains Barrett. “Coastal Windows understands the need for protection against these harsh environmental conditions.” CoastalGard™ windows and doors are made with laminated glass and have strong frames that not only protects against flying debris but also provide increased security against intruders. “The addition of Low-E coatings reduces solar heat gain intake, therefore reducing air conditioning costs,” says Barrett. The Low-E, or low-emissivity, coating minimizes the amount of infrared and ultraviolet light that enters the home.

ACCESSORIZE WITH SHUTTERS Shutters are just one way to add beauty to your windows from the inside and out while providing protection. Island Shutters has the island’s largest selection of shutters, all built to handle Hawaii’s unique climate. The company’s tropical shutters, for instance, use the highest-quality stainless steel to prevent damage from salty air, wind and water. “In Hawaii, durability is one of the most important factors,” says Bronson Sonico of Island Shutters. “We get sun 365 days out of the year and people’s shutters get exposed to salt and wind.”

EXPERT ADVICE

Pool Preparation Get it right the first time. BY CAITLIN THOMAS

hile having a pool might be a dream for many homeowners, there’s a lot to consider before diving in and building one. The planning process alone brings up questions about where to put it, how big can it be and the ultimate puzzle: How much will it cost? Clifton Crawford of Pacific Pool & Spa fills us in on some pool essentials.

W

COST EXPECTATIONS

For starters, talk to a pool expert. During a consultation, Crawford lets his customers know that their new pool will likely cost at least $100,000 to complete. “Knowing they have an expectation of value, I’ll bring my portfolio to help them visualize what they’re thinking, show them different designs and shapes, and work to stay within their budget,” he says.

CO

Consider the size of your backyard and the natural elements that are already there to find the right fit for your home. “To build a pool today, we can only build now with 75% of the square footage of your property,” explains Crawford. “If you have a 10,000 square foot lot, you can only put building structures, including swimming structures, at 7,500 square feet.”

CONSTRUCTION ACCESS

To build a pool, your contractor will need machinery, concrete, materials and workers to transform your yard. Before building can begin, lay out a path for heavy equipment to be able to access the site. Make sure there’s enough space between your house and your neighbor’s place too. 68 • JUNE/JULY 2022 • hawaiihomemag.com

EXPERT ADVICE

WHAT’S YOUR TYPE? Installing an endless or infinity pool — a reflecting

pool with an edge that gives an appearance of water with no boundaries — requires a solid, level surface that’s at least 2 feet wider and 3 feet longer than the pool’s interior dimensions. An above-ground pool eliminates the need to excavate while an in-ground one requires it. An in-ground pool is also the right choice for those who want a deeper pool. A partially in-ground one would be the most accessible to those with physical limitations.

ALL SYSTEMS GO There are two basic parts to most central air conditioner systems: an outdoor unit installed beside your house and an indoor unit. Generally, you’ll want to call on an AC contractor to inspect these systems, shares Noella Cosco of Cosco Air Conditioning and 70 • JUNE/JULY 2022 • hawaiihomemag.com

Refrigeration. She says it’s best to avoid poking around and maybe damaging the equipment, parts of which can be fragile. DO IT YOURSELF For routine maintenance, homeowners can check the filters themselves. Cosco says that for ducted or central AC air handlers, you can simply replace the filters, while mini-split systems require some cleaning. For those, she recommends dusting, vacuuming and gently rinsing the filters with water. You can also check the coil in the air handler yourself. If there is mold and dust buildup, it is best to work with a contractor who can do a thorough cleaning.

PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

hen it comes to the upkeep of your air conditioning system, there are a few things you can do yourself to keep it running smoothly. However, most things are better left to the professionals. Here’s how to figure out when you can handle things on your own and when you need to turn to an AC expert.

MAINTENANCE

REFRESH YOUR PARTS Knowing your AC’s parts and equipment allows you to better understand what needs maintenance. For instance, condensate drain pans catch excess water and can be filled with gunk. Use pan tablets to cut down on the buildup of mold and sludge. “The air filter and coil are two important items to inspect,” says Cosco. However, if your coil needs a deep clean, a contractor is recommended. The equipment works better if there are no obstructions, so be sure to check that the outdoor coil is clean and free of debris like dirt and grime. “Being in Hawaii, the salt corrodes the coil fins even faster, so a spray down of the coil will help with that,” says Cosco. FIX THE LEAK If you find a leak, contact a qualified HVAC technician immediately. Cosco advises against trying to fix this yourself. “Make sure the power is turned off on the unit,” she says. “Your home’s main breaker box can be shut off if you are not able to find the AC’s disconnect.”

Water Conservation and Home Upgrades Invest in your place and lower your water use. BY KATHLEEN PAHINUI

I

• Improve the beauty of your lawns. About half of the water used by a household is for the outdoors. If you water your lawn just once every three days, you’ll promote deeper root growth. This will make your 72 • JUNE/JULY 2022 • hawaiihomemag.com

lawn healthier and more water-efficient. The best times to water your lawn are early morning, evening or at night to minimize evaporation. • Upgrade your plumbing fixtures. New plumbing fixtures save gallons of water in the bathroom and kitchen. A new toilet can save 5 gallons or more with every flush. A new showerhead can save up to 5 gallons every minute. An aerator on your kitchen faucet can save up to 5 gallons daily. Visit the Board of Water Supply for rebates on water-efficient fixtures. • Install a rain barrel catchment system. Instead of using potable water for your plants or garden, use rainwater to reduce your water use and water bill. Rain barrel catchment systems are simple, proven ways to collect rainwater. Visit the Board of Water Supply for a $40 rebate on rain barrel catchment systems.

n every crisis there is opportunity. The Red Hill water contamination crisis, which resulted in a water supply shortage, is no exception. Oahu residents, businesses and government agencies are now being asked to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10% to ensure there is a sufficient water supply, especially through the hot, dry summer months. Everyone’s support is needed to prevent more stringent mandatory water conservation requirements. And with simple, low-cost upgrades that will benefit you now and into the future, you can do your part to reduce water demand while adding value to your home.

• Invest in an energy-efficient dishwasher. When you wash dishes by hand, you use more water — an estimated 27 gallons. When you wash dishes with an energyefficient dishwasher, you only use 3 gallons of water. Just remember to scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only operate the dishwasher when it’s completely full. You can track the results of your conservation efforts by signing up to receive personalized WaterSmart reports that assess your water usage and determine if it’s trending down, at boardofwatersupply.com/watersmart. Kathleen Pahinui is the public information officer for the Board of Water Supply.
