The Centre was designed by world renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano (whose completed projects include the New York Times Building in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the London Shard) and is perhaps his most original and spectacular creation. It needed a touch of sheer genius to envision the ten great conical pavilions in iroko wood shaped like traditional Kanak huts. The Cultural Centre was named in tribute to distinguished independentist leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou and is a potent symbol of the reconciliation between ethnic communities and the key role of Kanak culture and traditions in New Caledonia today. Don’t miss the chance to explore Kanak art and culture in this setting of outstanding architectural genius!
