In 1883, the Town Council had a bandstand erected on what had become Nouméa's central square. This historic bandstand was completely restored in 1986 and remains an emblematic feature of the square. Following the death of Governor Paul Feillet in 1903, this part of the square was named "Place Feillet". A further area developed alongside, initially known as "games square" and later baptised "Place Courbet" in tribute to another Governor: Amédée Anatole Courbet. 1893 saw the inauguration of a majestic 8m high monumental fountain sculpted from local stone. Known as the "Fontaine Céleste", it stands at the centre of the square and is the second symbolic landmark on Place des Cocotiers.
