In 1864, French engineer Jules Garnier not only discovered nickel in New Caledonia but also how to extract it from mineral ore. Sent to Nouméa to take up a post as head of the Mines Inspectorate, he fell in love with the country and set out to explore the Main Island. During his travels, he discovered a strange new pale green mineral which was later named garnierite in his honour. This magical mineral, this “green gold”, soon attracted crowds of speculators and a fully fledged nickel rush began. In 1876, Jules Garnier filed a patent to undertake nickel mining on an industrial scale and was one of the founders of the company that later became Société Le Nickel - SLN, establishing New Caledonia’s first nickel smelting plant. Nickel continues to play a key role in New Caledonia’s economy; this tiny country possesses 20% of the world’s known nickel resources, and three of the world's top nickel processing plants are currently in production in New Caledonia...

Since May 2014, they have been in New Caledonia, including a tour to Maré on the East Coast. Before setting sail again, the talented duo are giving two final shows, scheduled for 27 and 28 March.
