History

L’Anse Vata In Nouméa, the vast bay stretching from Pointe Magnin headland to the "Rocher à la Voile" promontory was baptised Baie des Canards in 1861 but finally retained its Melanesian name derived from the word ouata, meaning sandalwood, thus "Sandalwood Bay". Anse Vata has always been a popular leisure resort: local settler Joseph Leclère opened a restaurant there in 1859 and the Governor had his residence there. In the 1900s, Anse Vata become the haunt of escaped convicts and lost some of its appeal for local gentry so a police station was set up to remedy the problem. However, the bay remained a favourite bathing place and the great families of the day had their own bathing huts on the beach. The next arrivals were restaurants and dancehalls such as "Anse Vata les Bains". For a century and a half, a stroll or drive around Noumea’s bays has remained one of the most popular local pastimes.
