At Airdrie Minor Hockey our mission is to provide fair opportunity for positive experiences through a safe and fun environment, with strong, progressive and quality programs for all members of the hockey community.

We strive to provide the unique hockey experience that each of our athletes is looking for by providing a diverse selection of programs for Airdrie athletes who want to take to the ice.

Our recreation program offers hockey for players who have little to no experience and limited time and resources or just a casual interest in the game. The rec program offers a low cost, low commitment place for children to play hockey.

Our female program offers highly competitive and lower intensity levels of play to accommodate girls of all skill levels. Girls can play hockey for life and we are proud to have all female programming for female athletes in Airdrie.

Intro-to-hockey is where our youngest athletes play the game together, learning the essential skills and building friendships. This program has a strong focus on the FUNdamentals. The program seeks to instill a love of the game to keep our athletes on the ice for life.

The Rockies Hockey League (RHL) program offers a traditional hockey experience with a lower cost, lower commitment but still exciting and competitive level of hockey. All players can find a home here as it is a no cut program that ensures that all players can play for life.

For athletes, who are looking to move to the next level of competition, the Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) stream offers a highly competitive environment for the higher skilled and more competitive players. The more challenging level of play keeps our athletes engaged with the sport and playing for life.

Our elite program is designed for the very best players who have the time, energy and commitment to take this sport to its most intense, most competitive, highest skill level. Many athletes strive for this level of play but only a few will have the drive and talent to play here.

With such a wide variety of programs and options we are succeeding in our mission. All Airdrie athletes can find a home with Airdrie Minor Hockey regardless of skill, we have a place for everyone.

uring my inaugural season as president, I had the privilege of engaging with a young athlete who encountered a setback (injury) during tryouts, resulting in his placement on a team that was not his first choice. The coordinator and I dedicated time to genuinely listen and explore potential improvements with him. While his team assignment remained unchanged for the season, the encounter was profoundly enlightening for me. It underscored the essence of my role - prioritizing the well-being and development of the athletes. Years later I shook that same young man’s hand at his U18 graduating last season home game and I know (from Google) that he is still playing hockey today. It makes me proud to know that he is still playing, that he faced adversity, but that did not deter this young man from continuing to play. For him, and many others, hockey is not just a game; it is a lifestyle and part of who they are. I feel proud to be able to help cultivate and support that love that keeps kids playing hockey for life.

The tales of parent coaches displaying their victorious banners and reminiscing their glory days, or a volunteer coach fondly recalling his experiences at the prestigious Brick tournament, reinstate how hockey intricately weaves into the fabric of their lives. Even as someone who has not played hockey, I understand that “Hockey for Life” transcends mere game play. It embodies camaraderie, friendships, familial bonds and collective experiences. It is about enhancing the sport for everyone, ensuring accessibility, fostering inclusivity and bolstering young athletes through their challenges.

These years have offered countless opportunities to interact with young athletes on various matters. It is my sincere hope that the concerted efforts of their families, the board, volunteer coaches and myself have been instrumental in cultivating a lifelong affinity for hockey and everything it signifies.

Looking back on this past year, the 2023-2024 season stands out as exceptionally fulfilling. Our athletes have exhibited remarkable skill, capturing 13 banners, a clear reflection of their dedication and our coaching staff’s expertise. The positive influence we have had on 1,435 young athletes across 82 teams is a testament to our association’s dedication to creating a nurturing, dynamic, inclusive hockey community and fosters a “Hockey for Life” philosophy.

AMHA is filled with ‘SOUPER’ SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS

Starting the hockey season off on the right foot requires the dedication and commitment of hundreds of volunteers who put in many early mornings and late nights. The creation of teams requires many hours of thankless work and our volunteers are often at the rink for up to 12 hours in a day, right through meal time.

“Hangry” evaluators are a hazard to the harmonious creation of teams so hockey mom Shannon Stiefel and her committee of volunteers step up to keep our volunteers fed, happy and healthy.

Stiefel’s Loaded Baked Potato Soup was such a hit it had more than one board member ducking into the arena to ‘help’ outside their schedules just to get another bowl. After no small amount of begging, here’s her famous baked potato soup recipe.

“My philosophy for sports, not just hockey, is that parents and coaches should push their kids, but only in areas they (players) can control. Coaches and parents are more likely to turn a player away from a sport than make them great. Our job as parents and coaches is to support the players and teach them that sports are incredible. Players cannot control how big, fast or strong they are but they can control how much effort they put in, their positive attitude and the kind of teammate they are. Effort, attitude and teamwork are the pillars of successful teams and players.”

My primary focus is nurturing the development of our young athletes by instilling values of personal integrity and fostering positive relationships within their teams and within themselves. By guiding them through the dynamics of constructive interpersonal connections we equip them with a foundation for navigating future relationships and establishing healthy support networks.

In recognition of their dedication to both hockey and academic achievement, AMHA proudly announces the recipients of the 2023-2024 scholarships. Josh Lee, Ben Luterbach, Owen Stevenson and Elise Vincent have been chosen for their exceptional commitment to sportsmanship, community and scholarly pursuits.

The AMHA Executive Committee, impassioned by their commitment to nurture young talent, established this scholarship to honor U18 graduating athletes transitioning into higher education. Each recipient exemplifies the qualities sought by Airdrie Minor Hockey: originality, community spirit, academic excellence and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.

These scholarship winners represent the future of hockey and academic excellence, showcasing not only their prowess in sports but also their commitment to personal growth and community welfare. As they embark on their post-secondary journeys it is our hope that they carry with them the values they’ve acquired by their involvement with AMHA.

Partnering with local

community

groups

and giving back to those in need takes teamwork

Over the years many Airdrie Minor Hockey teams have made it a priority to give back to the community through initiatives such as the Lioness Hamper Program (now Airdrie 1st Club), The Airdrie Food Bank and partnering with other local groups and individuals. AMHA has also been working hard to participate in events that raise community spirit including the Santa Claus and Canada Day parades.

This past season, Airdrie 1st Club representatives approached AMHA asking them to sweeten things up a little by encouraging members to donate chocolate to be placed in Airdrie 1st Club’s holiday hampers, AMHA families responded generously to the request by providing over 400 boxes of chocolates in less than a week. This coming season we will continue our 10 year relationship with the Airdrie 1st Club and round out the holiday hampers with the items that they need to provide a festive holiday for the Airdrie families who need a little extra this holiday season..

The association’s Turkey Bowl is a huge success and is entering into a 18th season and the Xtreme’s Pink in the Rink event will also continue to support Breast Cancer Awareness in late October. The association looks forward to growing their presence in the community this season and can’t wait to see the creative ways our teams are giving back.

Meet Right Winger JENSEN MARSH

One of ten local players chosen in their WHL draft year, 2023-2024 Airdrie Xtreme player Jensen Marsh is excited to have been selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings. The 2009 born player signed a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Oil Kings in the spring. We recently caught up with him to chat about being a 2nd round, 27th overall WHL Prospects Draft Pick.

What’s the most exciting part about being drafted to the Edmonton Oil Kings?

The most exciting part about being drafted to the Oil Kings is how it’s such a convenient location. Edmonton is so close and they’re such a great organization, I’m super thrilled to be a part of their organization.

Who has been your biggest hockey hero or role model growing up, and how does their style or attitude inspire you?

Sidney Crosby because he has an unbelievable attitude and he just always knows what to do. He is a great leader who makes an impact on the game whenever he steps on the ice.

If you could pick one NHL player to be your mentor and give you advice, who would it be and why?

I would pick Sidney Crosby because he’s a great guy and is a super welcoming leader that nobody can hate. He would be great to teach me some things and to make me a better person.

Can you share a memorable moment from your time playing U15AAA that you think you’ll always look back on with a smile?

A memorable moment that I won’t forget during my second U15 year is when we beat the 1st place team in our division to advance to Provincials when no one thought we would even come close.

What’s your favourite drill or practice routine, and how does it help you prepare for games?

My favourite drill in practice is powerplay. I enjoy working on my wall play because when it comes to a scenario in a game, I can

How do you balance the demands of hockey with your schoolwork and social life, and do you have any tips for staying organized?

I put time aside after school or before a game or after a game to do any homework. I have to make sure that I stay on top of things. If I’m still behind I will miss out on things like hanging out with friends or even hockey because school comes first.

Looking ahead, what are three personal goals you hope to achieve in your rookie season should you crack the Oil Kings line up?

My main goal is to crack the Oil Kings roster as soon as possible because I want to be in the WHL quickly so that my game will improve faster. If (or when) I crack the roster my goal is to be a good 200 foot player that makes an impact and plays my role. I will work extremely hard and do as much as possible to make the Oil Kings lineup in my 16 year old season.

Continue to Expand Their Relationship

It takes a VILLAGE

Global Sport Academy (Village Sports) aims to strive for a gold standard level of player development on and off the ice while working with even more Airdrie Minor Hockey Athletes.

In September 2018, Airdrie Minor Hockey and Global Sport Academy (Village Sports) entered into an agreement that would see the U18 AAA CFR Chemicals Bisons development and coaching components passed off into the capable hands of Global Sport Academy. Working closely with the Airdrie Elite Hockey Committee (AEHC) Global has evolved to take the helm of not only the U18 AAA CFR Chemicals Bisons, but also the U17 AAA Cannex Avalanche and the U15 AAA Xtreme.

Fast forward to April 2024, an additional collaboration was created that will directly benefit AMHA’s eight AA teams which are comprised of mixed and female players in the U11 to U18 age categories. By providing a unified and structured approach to player development AMHA aims to elevate the performance and experience of the athletes and coaches alike. “We are thrilled to embark on this journey with AMHA and AEHC to elevate player development within the Airdrie community,” says Dustin Taylor, chief operating officer with Village Sports.

“Through our integrated programs and mentorship models, we are confident in our ability to nurture well-rounded athletes and empower them to reach their full potential,” continues Taylor.

With the goal of cementing Airdrie’s status as a premier destination for aspiring athletes and solidifying Airdrie’s reputation as a trailblazer in the realm of minor hockey, both AMHA and Global Sport Academy aim to work hard together to prioritize player development and mentorship.

Giving players AN EDGE

AMHA partnership gives players an Explosive Edge when it comes to practice space

Airdrie Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) has proudly partnered with Explosive Edge Athletic Development Ltd. for the past two years. This local collaboration has been instrumental in fostering the growth and development of young players and goalies within the organization.

In addition to encouraging and developing our goalies AMHA has utilized Explosive Edge’s smaller ice surface for U9 practices which are aimed at honing skills in a more confined and controlled environment. This approach allows players to focus on fundamental skills, enhances their spatial awareness and increases their frequency of puck touches. Practicing in smaller areas significantly boosts player engagement regardless of their skill level, ensuring every participant remains actively involved in the play.

“Practicing on a smaller surface increases player engagement and activity level. It’s also easier to maintain their focus when you don’t have to gather them back to the group,” jokes one AMHA coach who is a big fan of the partnership.

This strategic use of facilities underscores AMHA’s commitment to providing optimal development opportunities for its young athletes, supported by valuable local partnerships like Explosive Edge.
