WELCOME TO ALUMAPALOOZA 2010, the Airstream factory, and the town of Jackson Center, Ohio! You’re going to have a great week, and a busy one! It’s just about impossible to do everything on the program, so use this guide to plan your week.
TUESDAY, JUNE 1
Internet: There’s free wi-fi at the Airstream Service Center. Trash/Gray Water: Trash goes in the dumpster next to the building across Bambi Lane. Gray water cannot be released on the ground per Ohio law. Use a blue tank and take it to the dump station. Black Tank Pump-Outs: At any time you can empty your black tank at the dump station. However, if you prefer to have your trailer pumped out, use the brightly colored coupon included with your registration materials. Pump-outs will be provided in the morning on Thursday June 10 and Saturday June 12. The cost is $20, payable in cash to the driver. Tape the coupon to the rear window of your trailer the evening before you want the pump-out. Note that someone will need to be present to pay the driver. Miscellany: No ground fires allowed. Local ordinance says: No open containers off Airstream property. All animals must be caged or on a 6-foot (or shorter) leash. No pets in buildings except service animals.

Jackson Center Community Days: Bands will be playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in downtown Jackson Center. Admission is free. There is a charge for amusement rides. Wristbands for unlimited admission to the rides are $25, and $15 for kids under age 3, and can be purchased downtown. Chris McDaniel’s great show was a crowd favorite at the Vintage Trailer Jam in 2009. A combination of trick roping, singing, dancing, and magic makes his performance a treat for all ages. Airstream will be offering daily tours of the factory (twice a day on Thursday and Friday). Only 25 people are admitted to each tour, so get to the Service Center early to register. Close-toed shoes are required, and you should plan to walk about 3/4 of a mile. Note that production is shut down during the Friday afternoon tour. This means there’s less to see, but also it’s quieter so you can hear the tour guide a little easier.

America’s National Parks, with Bert Gildart Bert Gildart, whose work is familiar to most Airstream Life readers, will present two slide programs. His first talk will celebrate our national lands and will conclude with a discussion of the fatal maulings of two girls that occurred in Glacier National Park in 1967. Bert was a seasonal park ranger at the time and was intimately involved in this turning point of national park policy. Bowlus – The Origin of the Species This 45-minute presentation will cover the origins of the Bowlus trailer that inspired the aluminum Airstreams we travel in today. Historian John Long will explain the development of the earliest prototypes and the subsequent growth of the Bowlus trailer company, with 80 historic slides. The presentation will be followed by an interactive question period and tour of a 1935 Road Chief. This presentation is a must for all enthusiasts of Aluminum trailers to understand the history of the “Origin of the Species,” Bowlus trailers.
