A Brand Re-Awakening
ABOUT OUR COVER Don Lake once again graces our cover with a watercolor, this time entitled “Classic Aluminum.” After seeing vintage Airstreams at Alumafandango at Lakeside Park in Denver CO in 2012, Don painted this image to give a sense of the vintage trailers found at Airstream rallies around the country. Don Lake was a Professor of Art for 38 years, specializing in drawing and watercolor. Best known for his industrial imagery, he also has a long history of painting the prairie landscape. He has lately been developing a body of Airstream paintings, including “Alumapalooza Icons,” seen on our Summer 2013 cover, which won the top award at Watercolor USA that year.
Airstream has always been focused on the beautiful aluminum trailers produced since the 1930s, which have made the trailers an icon of American design. But these days, the story of Airstream has broadened quite a bit. As I’ve mentioned in prior issues of Airstream Life, the community of Airstream has begun to flourish in Europe. Thousands of people now call themselves “Airstreamers” in western Europe, with more joining us every month. This spring Airstream announced a new dealership in Norway, adding to the others in England, Germany, and Italy. Thanks to the existence of EU-spec Airstreams, traveling in Europe in an Airstream is becoming more feasible for Americans. That’s why in the printed edition of Airstream Life (available by subscription only) we have an article by Armin Heun, Managing Director of Airstream Germany, about the great opportunities waiting to be explored in Europe. The same thing is poised to happen in Asia as well. Airstream dealers in Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, and Tokyo are already open, and Interstate motorhomes are being sold in Thailand. I plan to go out there later this year to take a look and meet some of the earliest members of the Airstream owner community in Asia. I’ll report back here. Airstreams today go far beyond the travel trailers that most people associate with the name. The Airstream Interstate touring coach, at about $150,000 well-equipped, has been top-selling luxury B-van in the world three years in a row. I took one to coastal California in July and was amazed at its drivability, sophistication, and fuel economy. Building on the popularity of the Interstate, this summer Airstream announced the Autobahn luxury passenger van, currently available and sold exclusively by Mercedes Benz Sprinter dealers. This is essentially an executive coach, loaded with electronic goodies and features designed to make passengers want to shun the ordinary limo. By September, you’ll start seeing another all-new product on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis: the Airstream Grand Tour. This will be more of a traditional RV compared to the Interstate touring coach, meaning larger galley and appliances, and amenities oriented to campers such as screen doors—while still seating up to seven people.

Meanwhile the travel trailers haven’t been neglected. The big news this year is that starting with the 2015 model year, Airstream trailers over 25 feet long will come with ducted air conditioning, standard. This is an innovation that was first introduced in the recent super-luxury Land Yacht, which really helps streamline the ceiling and dramatically cut the noise of an air conditioner. All of these changes and improvements are having an impact. These days over 40% of new Airstream owners are first-time RV’ers. They’ve never owned any RV before they bought their Airstream. This is unprecedented. Just eight or nine years ago, the ratio of first-time owners was close to 16%. We meet these new owners at the Aluma-events all over the country, and they are eager to gain experience with their Airstream, make friends, and explore. You’ll probably meet them as you travel, too. Here’s my recommendation: when you encounter new owners, take the time to get to know them. You can help them on their path, and I bet you’ll find that they bring a new dimension that makes our entire Airstream community more interesting. That’s the story of Airstream today: a worldwide brand that goes far beyond aluminum travel trailers. While shiny aluminum is still at the heart of what Airstream does, and will probably forever be the first thing we think of, we are in the midst of a brand “re-awakening” that will set the tone for Airstream for the next few decades. I think it will be fun for all of us. See you on the road!

Traveler or Camper? Dear Editor: After receiving the Spring 2014 issue of Airstream Life, both your editorial and the article Names, Lengths, and Widths inspired us to write. In your editorial Take A Different Path, we have fallen into both the camper and traveler categories. While my husband was working, we mostly fell into the traveler category as he would take two to four weeks of vacation. We would go to Blue River, OR, and use that as our base camp, taking side trips to Bend and Sisters, OR. There is great fishing and golfing nearby. During this time we travelered in a 22-ft. 1977 Argosy which we dearly loved. Seeing the pictures in the article Names, Lengths, and Widths, of the Argosys brought back memories of our Argosy. When my husband retired in 2005, we made longer trips from two weeks to four months at a time. After a couple of years of snowbirding to Southern California in the 22-ft. Argosy, we decided it was time to upgrade. In 2012 we traded our Argosy for a 25-ft Airstream Flying Cloud. It was always our dream to own a “real” Airstream and attend a rally. Since owning the Airstream, we have started making camping trips as well as traveler trips. Plus, we finally were able to attend the Alumafandango rally in Canyonville, OR, last August and have registered again for the rally in September 2014. On our camping trips, we throw some food in the refrigerator as everything else is ready to go. Bringing It Home! Dear Mr. Luhr, We recently purchased a 23-ft International from Airstream Adventures Northwest, Portland, as a micro-apartment for the many weeks per year my husband works in Silicon Valley. This photo documents that virgin drive from showroom floor to its temporary home in Morgan Hill—framing it in the reflection of the passenger side mirror. The Airstream allows us to reduce our California rent substantially. And the articles in Airstream Life help us dream of the various trips to enjoy after retirement! We spent eight months renovating the interior and polishing the exterior before taking her on an epic journey last summer; we covered 3,000 miles in 62 days from Fort Rucker, AL, to Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA, via Fort Leavenworth, KS. (We’re an Army family.) Basecamp Comfort We purchased our Airstream Basecamp new in 2008. We do living history (colonial fairs of the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War periods), and it has been the perfect solution for transporting all of our 18th Century canvas, poles, products we sell, etc. After setting up at our events, we are able to go to a modern campground and live in the Basecamp for the duration of the event. (That means air-conditioning, a comfortable bed, WIFI access in most cases, access to showers, etc., as opposed to sleeping in an 18th Century tent, on the ground, without showers, and in the oppressive heat of summer.) Maiden Voyage On The Oregon Coast In this photo, we were on our maiden voyage in our 23' International Serenity heading from La Conner WA, north of Seattle, to any place south along the Oregon Coast. We stopped at three locations along the way. Just south of Lincoln City was our first stop and as you can see the view was spectacular. We made it as far as Winchester Bay OR. This are has some of the best homegrown oysters any where around as well as being located at “the Dunes� area of Oregon (if you like dune riding). The area is about as far down the coast as Corvallis is on the I-5. No issues, other than facing the moment when we had to head home. Craig Meldahl La Conner, WA

What A Way To Recuperate! This photo was taken at Carpenteria State Beach (CA) in November of 2013. My husband was recovering from surgery and was off work for four weeks, so I kidnapped him and took him camping. He enjoyed having coffee in the beach in the morning and especially enjoyed the sunsets. The reflection of the sunsets bounced off the trailer, and also the beauty of our California scenery. Airstreaming May Be Good For Your Health Dear Mr. Luhr, Airstream should add a consumer warning to each unit shipped. The following seems about right. “Warning: This product contains wanderlust and fun. Both are addictive and may change your outlook on camping and travel.” Carol and I retired in 2008 and bought a new 23' International CCD so we could travel around the country. We started with lots of enthusiasm, fully expecting the excitement of being on the road to diminish with time. It hasn’t happened. We got the Airstream so we could travel. Now we invent trips so we can get out in the Airstream! Some have really silly itineraries. Most recently, we set out to visit and rate every Ohio state campground suitable for RV camping. There are 55; we rated 52 of them. We drove 2,988 miles (2,171 miles towing) and never left the state. We blog each trip as a way of remembering and sharing adventures with friends. Even a brief peek at http://dc-airstreamtrips.blogspot.com/ will make it clear that we prefer travel to camping. The attached photo is from a favorite stopping point: Elephant Butte State Park, just off I-25 north of Truth or Consequences, NM. We just passed 50,000 miles of towing and have loved every mile of the journey. We’ve driven 62,162 miles, towed 50,214 miles and set-up the trailer 245 times. Thanks for making it possible. SMALL SPACE: BIG LIFE This 2012 Airstream packs a serious amount of technology within its 25 foot length, designed with exciting new materials for an owner who demands quality. The interior design began with a new Airstream shell and buildout by Timeless Travel Trailers, for an investor who requested the flexibility of dry camping, and sustainability in very cold and warm temperatures. The kitchen galley located in the front of the Airstream utilizes a white synthetic marble counter top made by 3form which looks great without adding the weight of real marble. 3form is one of the leading manufacturers of awardwinning sustainable building materials and architectural hardware solutions, thus it was the perfect choice for this Airstream. The blue overhead lockers above the counter top are also a 3form material, and the cabinet doors below are a stained and black lacquered oak wood with large stainless steel bar pulls. The Sharp Insight microwave installed below the counter top takes care of the majority of the cooking, while a Seaward Princess Gourmet 3-burner cooktop completes the remaining needs. The stainless steel sink and pull-out faucet are placed under the large expanse of windows, which bring the outdoors in, so whoever is doing the cleanup or prep has a terrific view of the scenery. A 23" Samsung TV in the galley provides news and entertainment. The lounge/bedroom area repeats the color scheme of blue/black/tan with the geometric print fabric on the bed, and is also used as curtains, while Graber shades provide complete blackout from all light sources. The storage closet doubles as an equipment locker, housing a Dish Network two channel TV receiver, Internet in Motion with wi-fi (so that the Internet

INTERIORS connection can be used by passengers in the tow vehicle while on the road), and a 600-watt surround sound audio system with sub-woofer and infinity speakers. All audio from over the air (terrestrial) and satellite radio, CDs, DVDs, satellite TV, and smart phone connection is routed through a Kenwood head unit. A Samsung 28" TV provides additional news and entertainment for this area. Lighting throughout is LED in various recessed and hanging fixtures. Entering the lavatory, the unique welcoming door hardware in nickel bronze fixtures were rescued from a retired 1940’s Pullman railway sleeper car, and used also in the shower. The porcelain commode is marine grade, and the blue counter top in 3form material supports a polished stainless steel sink. Wall covering repeats the aluminum color of the walls with an oversize polka dot pattern. Cabinets are finished in black lacquered oak wood, and a custom backlighted mirror completes the space. Floor covering throughout is bamboo in a fumed (carbonized) finish, which provides a light neutral background for contrast in the interior space. Perhaps we have saved the best for last, which is the very serious panel just inside the

door. The controls located on the face of the panel allow easy one-stop management of the Xantrex 3000 watt pure-sine inverter, the Cummins Onan 5.5kW generator, lighting, and holding tank monitors. With plenty of utility-grade power available anytime, anywhere, this Airstream can stay warm when exterior temperatures fall to zero, and cool when the sun creates uncomfortable heat. The 75 gallon water tank provides an ample supply for camping just about anywhere in just about any climate.

Innovative RV Kitchen Organizers When people first visit my 200 square-foot rolling home, they wonder where the heck I keep all of my stuff—especially in the kitchen. I don’t have junk sitting out in the open; my countertops are clear, no baskets of loose miscellaneous items, and everything is tidy. How is it that I can keep my trailer more organized than most people who live in a real house? As those of you who own Airstreams know, every available space in your rig contains some kind of storage. Contrary to popular belief, having enough room isn’t the problem! The trick is setting up each area to best serve a traveling lifestyle, because there’s a heck of a lot more to staying organized as an Airstreamer than just having enough drawers and cabinets. Truly effective storage needs to serve multiple purposes. Take a tour of your Airstream kitchen and ask yourself if each space meets the following requirements: Accessibility – No matter whether we’re talking spices or dishes or pots and pans, you should be able to reach what you own fairly easily, without moving 23 stacks of other stuff to get to it. Nothing makes mealtime more frustrating than having to struggle to pull out your cookware (and if you’re like me, the harder meal prep is, the more likely you are to give up and go out for dinner). Choosing organizers that make it easy to get at your stuff will make you more successful at mealtime. Protection – Unlike a stationary house, an Airtreamer’s cabinets and closets and drawers are jiggled and bounced around every time they hit the road. When you put away a glass or appliance or bottle of wine, you need

to know that it isn’t going to tip over and break in transit. So your kitchen storage spaces should be designed to protect as well as organize. That means racks that hold things in place, segmented dividers that keep breakables from smashing into each other, and sometimes heavy-duty springs on your cabinet doors insure that they stay closed even on rough roads. Maximization of space – I have yet to set foot in an RV kitchen without seeing a tremendous amount of wasted storage in cabinets, drawers, pull-out pantries, you name it. Nine times out of ten, the culprit is under-use of vertical space. How tall are your cabinets? At least 8 or 10 inches, possibly more. When you sit a three-inchhigh stack of dishes or a single row of coffee cups on that shelf, you’re wasting two-third or more of your space! Putting in racks that store plates standing up, or hanging mugs and even wine glasses from hooks (above shorter bowls or saucers) will almost immediately double your storage capacity. 16

Generally, understanding basic principles and techniques of organization is more important than what kind of container you use. However, I make an exception when it comes to Airstream organizing, because some gadgets and gizmos just work better in our funkily-shaped storage spaces. These are the three “must haves” I recommend to every RVer I meet for keeping kitchen clutter under control: Cupboard corral – It all started when a can of green beans collided with a foot, and the end result was an organizer designed specifically for the mobile lifestyle. These cool, interlocking plastic “fences” hold everything from drinkware to spice bottles to condiments in place while you’re busy traveling, and they can be customized to fit any size cabinet. No longer must you dodge flying objects opening your cabinets, rearrange the kitchen before hitting the road, or waste time cleaning up broken items when you arrive at your destination. These are available at CorralPlastics.com. Stacking food containers – One of the worst ways to store dry goods in an RV pantry is in its original packaging. Bags of rice and boxes cereal and those weird-shaped containers of pasta don’t play well with others, fall over when you try to stack them, and invite bug infestations. A much more space-efficient way to store food is to transfer it to standard-size storage containers that you can stack, making use of all your vertical space. And you don’t need to go nuts with expensive Tupperware. Gladware and Ziploc containers do just fine. (Available at your local grocery or discount store.) Customizable drawer dividers – I love drawer dividers but despise pre-molded trays that force you to try and fit your implements into the manufacturer’s storage scheme. Better when you can design your own divider to accommodate your exact needs, with the right-sized spaces for your cornstabbers and cherry-pitter and lemon zester. These dividers come with a series of plastic “rails” that you measure, score, and snap to the length you need. Then you slide them into the self-adhesive mounts in whatever configuration you want.
