WELCOME
This publication is now in it’s 8th year and started when analogue TV was still the norm in hotels and we were promoting the virtues of digital TV. At that time, despite our warnings, some hotels continued to buy flat screen TVs which were marketed ‘digital ready’, but were in fact analogue. We may not have had all of the answers, but looking back we seem to have understood most of the key technological issues and consumer trends which have shaped the future that we find ourselves in today. So the challenge continues and we are delighted to be in such an exciting stage of technological convergence for our industry and hope we can assist as you make those important investment decisions. At Airwave, our unique multi-branded approach means that we embrace new technology, selecting the ‘best of breed’ solution for each hotel. Again, we trust that this year’s edition will be both informative and inspirational – so please enjoy The Big Picture 2017. Tim Worrall, MD Airwave Europe Limited

2020 VISION WHERE WILL WE BE? The good news is that there’s no need to read the rest of this article, because I can answer the above question in one short paragraph. Most hotels will be stuck with the same in-room technology that they invest in today in 2017, as the typical refurbishment investment cycle is 6 years. Of course, this also means that savvy technology specifiers are closely monitoring trends and guest behavior to try and distinguish between passing fad and potential USP. To invest wisely, we must have a clear vision of the future, so let’s explore some of the dynamics at play in hotel technology and plan the digital journey ahead.

First Impressions Count
Surely, the most important thing about a hotel is its brand. Maybe that’s wrong and it’s all about location and design. Wait a minute, perhaps it’s the people that are key. Well, as we know they are all correct in different measures, as is a warm and efficient welcome into the hotel irst impressions count. Check-in and lobby area technology can be either subtle or engaging depending on the positioning of the brand and desired guest experience. To see the cutting edge of this technology means a visit to New York and a stay at the Renaissance New York Midtown hotel where they have just installed an amazing ‘Discovery Portal’ curated by Time Out, the famous city guide, to enable next generation travelers to browse detailed information on events, restaurants, shopping venues, shows, and other local discoveries near the hotel. Justin Etheridge, Executive Vice President at Time Out states “Dynamic, interactive, and ‘digitally alive,’ the Discovery Portal Powered by Time Out will be an integral part of the Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel personality as it paves the way for next gen business travelers eager to make the most of every minute in New York City.” Other highlights include a “living” digital tapestry projected along the entrance corridor wall that responds to human motion and a four-story LED clock on the hotel roof which will be a new fi ture of the ew York City skyline.
Lose your keys
The guest journey at hotels is increasingly becoming a digital one, as technological innovation is driving consumers to opt for convenience and look for more control over their stay. Keyless room entry is one of the game changers here, with the SPG Keyless™ program from Starwood hotels being rolled out in its Aloft, Element and W Hotels properties. Other companies like Starwood’s new owner Marriott as well as Hilton and IHG are now following suit. This is possible as 92% of hotel guests walk in with a smart phone in their pocket and a few are showing off their new apple watch. Of course, plastic cards still have their place, as apparently Smart phones batteries can sometimes lose their charge, and not all guests can be bothered. At the airport, I sometimes use the airline app on my phone for check-in, but at other times, a paper boarding pass in my top pocket is my form of comfort blanket. Let’s also not forget the less than trivial issues surrounding the keyless revolution such as security issues, cost implications and overall added-value to the guest experience, which is the ultimate arbitrator.
Q. Bandwidth? A. Fat pipe
The million-dollar question asked at many new hotel planning meetings is “how much bandwidth will we require”. One answer is to think of a
4
www.airwave.tv
number - then add a few zeros. The fact is that in 2017, there are 6.7 billion connected devices in the world, and it is predicted that by 2020 it will triple to over 20 billion, boosted by wearables such as smart watches fitness trackers smart clothing and security devices. Quite simply, demand for bandwidth is huge and it’s only getting bigger. There are two main challenges: one is to ensure that the network and i i coverage within the hotel is structured optimally, and the other is to guarantee sufficient high speed connectivity to the internet within the hotel. To ensure good signal strength and reception
throughout the building, requires a professional site survey using equipment such as Ekahau, which enables the production of heat maps to verify coverage based upon the location of wireless access points (WAPs) within a given building construction and room layout. It is also essential to specify professional WAPs using the latest wireless standards and technologies to ensure that signal efficiency is being ma imised This is particularly important when today’s guests want to stream multiple high bandwidth video streams from apps such as etfli i layer ouTube and the plethora of other streaming services and catch-up TV apps on the market ld i i standards running within the cluttered 2.4Ghz frequency space just can’t cope, even now! So it’s imperative that hotels use the 5Ghz frequency space, where there are more available channels and less i i congestion which then introduces possibilities for much higher data rates. This is where companies such as Ruckus and Samsung usiness are using the latest wireless standards such as 802.11 a/c and technologies such as ‘simultaneous spatial streams that are all geared to provide a i i infrastructure that will meet guest expectations today and for years to come. (Airwave engineers are trained to use Ekahau, and install and maintain Ruckus and Samsung i i e uipment by the way).

Many hotels, especially those offering conference facilities, which can take a toll on both internal and external infrastructure, now install a b fibre connection to the property and Internet Service Providers (ISP) enable them to throttle the bandwidth up and down as required and on-demand. For most hotels, a good rule of thumb is to allow for 0.5Mb per room, so a 100 room hotel would require 50Mb, or looking at it another way, you can take the number of rooms and halve that number to get to the recommended bandwidth, even complex statistical bandwidth models come to this conclusion, but of course it’s bound to change over time. Hotels on lower budgets can also spread the load by selecting an ISP who will deliver a bearer line capable of 100Mb, with the ability to throttle bandwidth in multiples of 10Mb. So a new hotel may elect for say 40Mb over a 100Mb bearer circuit, and can buy more bandwidth as demand increases. Fortunately as demand for capacity has grown, so the cost of the bandwidth has been falling, particularly in the cities and main hub towns. Going forward, as hotels will live or die on the speed and robustness of their connectivity, it will become increasingly important to design in redundancy with alternative outside circuits.
I’ve seen the light
fter a hard day and a long flight to a distant destination, one of the most tiresome activities upon entering a hotel room is to try to find the locations of all the light switches, which enable you to actually see the room you’ve just paid for. You may have spotted a tall elegant designer floor lamp in the corner of the room but should you now be fiddling around the bulb to find a hidden switch or reaching for the button attached to the cord which is hiding somewhere on the unlit floor beneath ow many hotel technologists does it take to turn the lights on? Surely, this simple worldwide problem should have been solved by now. Well there is hope and some have seen the light. Take Digivalet, and their in-room iPad system which is currently being trialed in two Aloft properties, which not only controls lights, air conditioning, TV, web-radio etc, but is also voice activated. When guests arrive, they launch a customised Aloft app on their in-room iPad to control various aspects of their voice-activated room. A personalized welcome screen advises guests on how to set up their room and use their
own voice with “Hey Siri.” Each iPad also offers a simple tutorial to guide guests through the setup process and answer any uestions they may have Here is a sampling of what app, paired with the guestroom, can do: n Control temperature - Siri can adjust the temperature on the Ecobee HomeKit-enabled thermostat by saying “Hey Siri, cool the room.” n d ust lighting sing omekit enabled hilips ue lights select preset lighting options by requesting Siri turn on the lights, turn off the lights, or simply say good morning. n Control music - By saying “Hey Siri, put on my morning playlist,” Siri can access guest iTunes accounts on the guestroom iPad. Music plays through the guest’s personal device. n Explore local attractions - By asking “Hey Siri, what are some attractions near me?” information about the local area can be gleaned directly from the app.
Digivalet also have similar installations in many high end hotels across the globe and are quickly gaining traction. The global electronics giant Samsung has also seen the potential and is now enabling guest room control functionality via selected
0845 555 1212
hospitality TV screens with it’s Lynk Hospitality Management Solution (LYNK HMS). This system turns the humble TV screen into a fully integrated control and management gateway encompassing a Content Management Solution (CMS) which as well as welcoming the guest, is an interactive system allowing them to access all types of content, be that live TV, VOD or streaming music or movies from the guests own device. There is also an Energy Management Solution (EMS), which both monitors room occupancy and intelligently adjusts heat, air and light settings for optimum energy usage as well as providing guests with an interface to control these devices via the In-Room Control Service (ICS). otel staff workflows can also be managed via the same portal with the Room Management Solution (RMS), which interfaces with a mobile application for housekeeping to report back on room status and maintenance requests etc.
Infrastructure matters
Designing the cabling for a new build hotel should be a simple task, but as often is the case, the devil is in the detail. For instance, determining whether the network carrying TV signals to the room is at data coa ial cable or both is the first task Much will depend on factors such as grade of hotel, capex and ongoing opex budgets, number of rooms, TV channel line up, need for over-the-top services (like BBC iPlayer etc), or whether a full Sky in-room solution is required. For 90% of cases, we would recommend running both coaxial TV cable and Cat6 data to all TV points. At extreme ends of the scale – large high-end hotels, just Cat6 data supporting an upscale IPTV system is a valid solution. Of course, running a mission critical multi-point data network 24/7 x 365 incurs tight SLAs and high ongoing costs, which can often be ustified in such properties t the opposite budget end of the scale, hotels can survive with just coaxial cable for TV, but there is no escape from the fact that they need a data network to support WiFi as a minimum.
Docsis revives Coax
Last year we reported how Vigin Media had just embarked on a multi-million pound advertising campaign extolling the virtues of the thickness of it’s cable compared to it’s rivals and explaining
www.airwave.tv

how DOCSIS 3 technology delivers a better quality TV experience. It is great marketing as they were really talking about a version of the humble coaxial cable which has been the mainstay TV cable network for the last 50 or so years. What is different however, is as well as being able to deliver digital HDTV signals, the cable can also support an IP data network, meaning that for the first time a separate Cat5/6 data cable does not also need to be run to each room. Now this year, Samsung has realized the potential here and has come to market with the 694 series TV which are already DOCSIS enabled, meaning the only equipment to install is a Teleste headend unit which can run up to 400 rooms simultaneously. Another very neat feature of the TV is that it provides a data output as well, which could connect other devices such as Apple TV, WAPs etc. This is e tremely beneficial for many existing sites with coaxial cabling, such as large holiday camps, castles and protected buildings, as well as sites where a data cable upgrade is too costly. Of course, the coaxial cable backbone is also the most robust and cost-effective way to deliver digital TV signals, be they terrestrial or satellite. All modern hospitality TVs have been specifically designed to be compatible with signals received via coaxial, so installing coaxial just makes common sense.
The Chinese are coming
We all know that the Chinese economy whilst slowing is still one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the World, which is reflected in the growth of hinese tourists visiting other countries. For the UK, this sector of the market is now the largest visitor group (overtaking USA and Germany) and from 2016 is expected to grow at 25% per annum, with numbers set to double by 2020 to 650,000, The average length of stay being 10 days. Research shows that there are four elements which are top requirements. First is a Chinese guide or interpreter, second is Chinese food closely followed by easy-to-use WiFi and Chinese TV channels. Clearly, those hotels which make these guests feel at home are set to capture this growing market sector.
6
www.airwave.tv
Airwave has now joined forces with the Chinese company Dopool, who are bringing 21 new live Chinese channels to Europe, 5 directly off satellite and 16 available via internet. These are the highest viewed channels in China and will instantly appeal to the weary Chinese visitor away from their home culture. It is planned that the new service as well as being on TV, will be available to the guests PC, tablet or phone and will incorporate VOD as well. The entire portal can also be branded to suit the hotel and a mirror image of the hotels website can be produced in Chinese to assist the visiting guests. Dopool is also considering offering 24/7 translation services as part of the package.
IRS – Multichannel Heaven
Property developers have known about Integrated Reception Systems (IRS) for many years, as they provide the backbone in nearly all apartment blocks in the UK to allow residents to hook-up their homes to multiple sources, be that terrestrial or satellite TV, or DAB services, via a single headend and antenna network. Exactly the same system is now being deployed in hotels to ensure the “biggest bang for the buck” within the hotel room. Many hospitality screens from the likes of Samsung and LG already include satellite tuners, enabling hundreds of high-quality UK and international TV and radio channels to be easily received in room. A further application comes with the development of the new proposition from Sky, which provides that real home-from-home experience delivering an amazing choice of high quality premium HD channels directly to the room. This solution has struck a cord with hotels across
the spectrum, from the budget sector, through to boutique hotels and the most prestigious and iconic five star properties in the UK. With the advent of DOCSIS enabled Samsung TVs, these networks can not only carry hundreds of HD TV channels, but also deliver an IP network into the room. Pretty amazing stuff, made possible by massive spend R&D in the parallel cable TV industry.
Airtime – Movies and more for everyone
Airtime is a new app currently available on the Samsung hospitality platform which provides guests with the latest video-on-demand movies directly from the cloud on their TV, without the need for expensive servers on site. All that is needed is to download the app. The movies are multi-language and available globally with a window ahead of the popular domestic subscription services. As no subscription is required, they are available to all hotel guests. In future, the service will also deliver an array of authorised international channels directly from the cloud to cater for travelers who want to watch live TV from their homeland. Tim Worrall, Managing Director of Airwave said “15 years ago we were distributing movies to hotels on VHS tape, 10 years ago we used to courier a harddrive, and then 5 years ago we started streaming content over the internet to the hotel VOD server. Now with Airtime, the hotel TV connects directly to our content in the cloud, and movies are securely streamed to the guest’s TV. This is true innovative technology, reducing costs, improving efficiency and delivering content on demand to where it is needed.”

Samsung’s LYNK-REACH, LG’s ProCentric and Philips’ CMND systems are essential basics for efficient control and communications in most hotels.
Virtual Reality
Hotel TV – Big is better
I suppose it is natural that as the size of the TV at home increases, so do the expectations of the guests for the size of the room TV. Trip Advisor reports often correlate size of TV to either positive or negative impressions of the stay with guests posting compliments like “the room had a glorious 50 inch Samsung LED-just like home :)” The demand now is not just for size, but also for smart TVs with access to the popular catch-up TV services, such as BBC iPlayer as well as internet radio apps like TuneIn Radio. With so many travelers bringing their own content with them, or subscribing on their own devices, there is a need for them to be able to seamlessly stream directly to the TV. Whilst brands like Samsung, LG and Philips have solutions here, it is normally up to a systems integrator, like Airwave, to ensure that the user experience is simple and intuitive whichever device they own. There is an emergence of on-location, inner city rooms, lacking space, where we believe the TV will be turned into a window on the world. With the introduction of the 4K or ltra igh Definition TVs with times the resolution of HD, we can see these screens acting as a substitute for windows, with images of the buzzing world outside being projected, or a calming feed from a distant tropical beachscape. In reality, we believe that UHD is not a fad indeed many films and ma or sports
events are now being recorded in 4K, and we have already installed these screens into the lobbies of boutique hotels needing that WOW factor. UHD is so clear, that it almost delivers the immersive experience that 3D TVs strive to achieve, but without the glasses. Whilst big may be better, and smart is desirable, it is absolutely essential that the TV selected for a hotel room is a recognised Hotel TV model, which normally enjoys an extra commercial warranty period as well as the features which are non-negotiable, such as remote centralised tuning and settings control.
Virtual reality (VR) is no longer a wonder of the future ast year we identified this technology as one which had very strong applications within the hospitality industry and now this is happening for real. Shangri-La hotels have now invested in producing VR content so that visitors can sample the delights of their luxurious properties around the globe without needing to actually travel. Rather than a two dimensional website, or a YouTube video, they can now don some Samsung Gear VR headsets in their sales offices which helps promote the destinations meeting and convention venues as well as its offering for guests. In fact this is also available for anyone to view at any location via the Oculus VR platform. New videos are being added every week, so it is obviously working. Marriott are also testing VR at hotels in London and New York with its ‘V-Room’ service, whereby guests can order a Samsung VR headset which accesses the Samsung Milk Platform of content and comes pre-loaded with travel content from around the world. The guests have the devices for 24 hours and for many it will be the first time they have experienced the technology. It is an immersive and experimental concept, which will possibly become mainstream faster than we can imagine.
The Rate of Change increases
Technology is moving faster than ever with guests expectations constantly increasing. It is only those brands prepared to listen carefully to customer needs or sometimes even anticipate them, which will succeed. It is encouraging to see so many hotels experimenting with new ideas and concepts in the mission to improve. The in-room technology investment cycle continues to reduce, so it is more important than ever to ensure the hotel infrastructure as future proof as possible, with open standards wherever possible so that mid-term updates in tech are possible. Ease of use and reliability are still the most important factors however, but as ever, hotels also need to embrace change to exceed guest expectations.

With regards to the” O” in OLED this is for organic as this uses hydrocarbons rather than heavy metals hence giving it the Organic name. A typical OLED panel is composed of four primary layers. n The substrate, which acts as the structural framework. n The anode, which draws electrons. n The cathode, which provides electrons. n The organic layer between which is further divided into a conducting layer. CREATING A UNIQUE
ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE Whether they’re staying for business or leisure, the TV is the first thing guests turn to when they’re looking to unwind in their room, and providing guests with the shows they know and love means they won’t need to go and spend elsewhere to be entertained. With over 12 million Sky customers in the UK and Ireland, Sky In-Room provides hotels with an opportunity to offer their guests comfort and hospitality with a taste of home. Hoteliers can look forward to an unbeatable line-up of entertainment on Sky to help them stand out from the crowd, including compelling dramas such as Westworld and The Young Pope, showing exclusively on Sky Atlantic. Hit US drama, Nashville joins the growing list of exclusive and addictive dramas on Sky Living. Plus, with Sky Cinema’s exclusive deals with the six big Hollywood studios, guests can watch upcoming blockbusters such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Pan, at least one year before they can watch them on other subscription movie channels. There’s also plenty of live sporting action across seven dedicated Sky Sports channels to enjoy. Bronwyn de Cholewa, Director for hotels at Sky Business says: “When it comes to TV entertainment people want the convenience and quality that comes with watching programmes, sports and movies on a large screen television. In fact, over 80% of hotel guests prefer to watch content on a TV rather than on a mobile or tablet device and two thirds of guests who do stream content to their personal devices, only do so because premium content is not available in the room1. Sky In-Room provides an opportunity for hotels to provide a level of quality in-room entertainment that better matches the residential viewing experience with a wide range of entertainment and international channels and their own Sky bo fitted into the hotel room As hotels try to set themselves apart from their competitors and provide guests with a memorable experience, Sky In-Room ensures hoteliers are able to deliver the best experience for their guests, therefore driving revenue for their business. 1 TNS hotel study consisting of online interviews with 1000 consumers who had visited a hotel in the past 12 months and 125 hotel owners from across Great Britain.

AIRWAVE HEALTHCARE
ALDER HEY IN THE PARK Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, in Liverpool, were looking for a partner to design and implement a patient entertainment system for their new Hospital. Airwave Healthcare, a leading systems integrator delivering a range of functionalities and unique platforms to meet the differing needs of their service users, were the obvious selection.
AS PART OF THE PROJECT BRIEF, ALDER HEY STATED: lder ey in the ark is inviting warm, happy, calming and educational, essentially a home-from-home for children who need care. Next generation technology improves the way we deliver healthcare – from keeping patient records to dispensing medicines by robot” With this in mind Airwave designed an IPTV system to include the potential to take content from a variety of broadcast sources, including playing the Hospitals own cartoon channel, and all delivered over easy to use hospitality TV sets.
AIRWAVE INCLUDED TWO “NEXT GENERATION” SOLUTIONS IN THE SYSTEM DESIGN:
1) Streaming of live tv to mobile devices (over the estate Wi-Fi network) that included the functionality to stream live TV, over the estate Wi-Fi infrastructure, for viewing on a mobile device (Tablet) – believed to be the
0845 555 1212
first e ample of this technology across the NHS., and 2) A solution to use “eyegaze technology” for control of TV functionality for patients that must remain totally static. The Trust had a requirement to provide patient entertainment / information free at point of use primarily at, but not restricted to, the patient bedhead. Providing access to Television, Radio, Internal Hospital Radio and Patient Information services. As part of the design process Airwave provided consultancy services to ensure the end specification delivered a system that included a PES that actually exceeded the initial expectations of the Trust within budget and timeframe limitations. The inclusion of “next generation” technology has a significant impact in the area of patient experience. Including provision for wireless streaming of live TV to a mobile device enables clinicians to help keep patients, in this instance children, engaged and calm by providing continued TV viewing even when the patient has to be moved from their bed to other areas of the hospital for treatment, consultations etc. Engaging patients helps to keep them calm in potentially stressful situations. This delivers benefits to both patient as well as the clinicians / nursing staff, as a calm patient enables a smoother and quicker process in administration of clinical activities.
Circle Bath
Airwave Healthcare supplied and installed the Samsung Lynk Sinc Smart TV system at Circle Bath Hospital. The Norman Foster designed Circle Bath building is revolutionary, and really puts the hospitality into hospitals, achieving a more hotel-like experience during a patient’s stay. Circle approached Airwave to upgrade their in-patient bedrooms to guarantee that the patient entertainment system matched the hospitality feel around the site. As a result, Airwave recommended the Samsung Lynk Sinc Smart TV system, which Airwave had previously installed into a number of hotels across the UK. The system allows the hospital the opportunity to showcase their excellence across the TV screen, reducing in-room literature and displaying useful information such as food menus and post-surgery exercise across the TV screen. Airwave utilised Samsung 32” LED commercial Smart TVs to make sure the patients achieved the best viewing experience, plus the hospital has the added security of a 2-year commercial on-site swap out warranty. Airwave gave full in-house training to the Circle marketing team, allowing them to update the system on a regular basis, either remotely or on the hospital site. Susie Burwell, Project Co-ordinator at Circle Healthcare said, “Airwave were a company who were very professional and approachable, when we were looking into replacing all our televisions in our inpatient rooms. Their quote was very competitive and they gave me a lot of support in making the correct decision about what type of TV system we required. The Samsung Lynk Sinc system has been a revelation and we can showcase all the good things about our hospital for patients to watch at their leisure. Airwave were always on hand to answer any questions and managed some tricky situations in a helpful and efficient manner I would highly recommend Airwave to anyone.”

TREEHOUSE TECHNOLOGY FROM AIRWAVE
Center Parcs Elveden has unveiled their new treehouses this week which “deliver another level of luxury”. The two-storey treehouses include woodburners, Sky TV, private decking with a barbecue, an external games den and an outdoor hot tub. Suitable for up to eight guests, the treehouses feature four bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, looking out over views of the surrounding treetops. Airwave are the chosen AV partner for Center Parcs and this latest installation brought numerous different in-room technologies together to create the ultimate guest in-room experience. Each Treehouse games-room includes a 65’’ Ambilux TV, an evolution of Philips long-running Ambilight ‘mood lighting’ technology. it swaps back wallilluminating LED lighting strips for nine Pico projectors that actually extend out the image displayed on the TV . The TV also provides Sky, an X-Box and Blu-Ray player, it really has it all! The Lounge area boasts a 42’’ Philips TV installed above the woodburner, providing Sky TV and a Blu-Ray player for the ultimate movie experience. The TV has also got access to the bird cam, a camera installed in midst of the Elveden site, allowing guests to bird watch from the comfort of their chairs. With all of the technology within the room, Airwave brought this together with the Demopad control system, which enables simple user interface for the guest to enjoy all features at the touch of a button, whilst in the background managing all audio and video sources. The Demopad is installed on a lockdown iPad, with magnetic docking device to provide charging capabilities. In each of the guest Bedroom there are 32’’ screens, with access to all Freeview channels and a dedicated bathroom speaker. Both the lounge and games room are installed with cutting edge Yamaha 5.1 surround sound systems giving a fantastic audio experience. Toby Hart Operations Director commented ‘’ Working with Center Parcs with such an innovative project was a pleasure, helping to provide the ultimate guest experience’’.
